How Disneyland Is Decorated "Overnight" and More Secrets From Disney's Holiday Decorator
Sorry, Buddy, but we've met someone who could dress up a location with even more festive flair than the syrup-obsessed elf in Gimbels. Meet Cathy Carson, an official Disneyland holiday park decorator and a part of a small but mighty crew worthy of Santa's workshop. For Cathy, every day is like Christmas, since she is dreaming up holiday decor ideas for the Anaheim, CA, park year-round. Yeah, we'd say that's a pretty cool job.
Cathy started working for Disney in 2003 as a temporary employee for Disneyland's holiday installation. She clearly had a knack for it, since she was asked back year after year, and now she's bringing the magic full-time. We had the chance to speak with her about her very merry career, what makes the holidays at Disneyland this year so special, and the behind-the-scenes secrets we've always wanted to know. Like, when do they start planning for 2019? And is year-round glitter on your face just a part of the job? (The answer to the latter is a resounding "yes.")
Keep reading for the answers to these burning questions as well as more photos of Disneyland's 2018 holiday decor.

There are classics, like eggnog and martinis, and some twists on your favorites, but you'll have to read through to see them all.
Queue up a Christmas film on Netflix and settle in with one of these cocktails. You'll be on your way to a holly jolly holiday.
Stop What You're Doing - Disneyland Has a Chocolate Churro For the First Time Ever, and It's Crazy Good
Out of all of Disneyland's new 2018 holiday churros, there is one you can. not. miss. The brand-new chocolate churro with crushed pretzels and peppermint is a perfect mix of sweet and salty, but what really sets it apart from the cinnamon-coated pastry pack is that it's the first time Disneyland has served a true chocolate churro. I spoke with Nubia Renteria, pastry sous chef at Disney's Grand Californian Hotel, who confirmed to POPSUGAR that it's never been done before. "The chocolate churro is all chocolate - the dough itself is chocolate - it's dusted with cocoa powder and sugar and then glazed with a chocolate sauce, pretzels, and peppermint candies," Renteria said.
At the park, I made sure to try the hot new ticket in town, and it's absolutely delicious. While some seasonal flavors can be overly sweet, have an artificial aftertaste, or just get dusted in flavorless colored sprinkles for show, this crunchy churro is a uniquely flavored treat that is chocolaty without being too sweet. The only downside? It's a drippy mess to eat, so have those napkins handy!
In fact, it even beat out the s'mores churro with marshmallow dipping sauce as my favorite churro at the park! Even Renteria, who's been with Disney for 18 years, agrees. She called this "delicious" churro her new favorite - aside from the classic, of course.
The chocolate churro with crushed pretzels and peppermint is $5.25 and located at the Frontierland Churro Cart near Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. Keep reading to see more photos of the seasonal churros at Disneyland during the holidays!

This Is What Happens When You Take Ibuprofen Too Often, According to a Doctor
You might be thinking, If I don't need a prescription to buy it, it must be safe to casually take it. For the most part, taking ibuprofen to ease pain is totally harmless and effective. However, a drug's a drug, and if you're taking ibuprofen on the daily, you might start to notice some unfortunate side effects.
First off, what is ibuprofen, exactly? "Ibuprofen is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAID). NSAIDs are frequently used for the treatment of inflammatory and painful conditions and are considered to be one of the most commonly used classes of medications worldwide," Harrison Linder, MD, from the Center for Interventional Pain Medicine at Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore, tells POPSUGAR.
"The current recommendation for ibuprofen is to limit daily use to no more than 30 days."
It's a handy medicine to stash in your purse, as long as it's used properly in the recommended time span and dosage amount. "The current recommendation for ibuprofen is to limit daily use to no more than 30 days. Dosing can range from 400 milligrams to 800 milligrams up to four times a day with a daily maximum of 3200 milligrams per day," says Dr. Linder.
However, if you exceed that amount or keep taking it well into your second (or third) month, the negative effects begin to outweigh the desired benefits of decreased discomfort and pain, he says.
You might be surprised, but it's actually pretty common for some people to rely on ibuprofen as a way to make it through the day. "Very often, individuals involved in large amounts of physical activity, either athletes or people with physically demanding occupations, will rely on ibuprofen or other NSAIDs as a way to limit daily aches and pains and allow continued function," says Dr. Linder.
Unfortunately, while you might feel that instant hit of relief and make it through a final set of burpees, you could be putting your body at risk down the road. Here's all the info you need to know about ibuprofen, along with the common physical side effects you could experience if you take too much of it.
How to Maintain Your Running Routine When It's Freezing, According to Olympian Kara Goucher
Kara Goucher pictured in warmer weather. Photo courtesy Kara Goucher.
Two-time Olympian Kara Goucher is used to running in the cold - she grew up in Minnesota and lives in Colorado - so she knows just how much we can dread getting in our miles when the weather is atrocious.
"It's totally normal. We all feel that way," Kara insists when we chat on the phone. "I went to visit my mom over last year in Duluth, and it was like negative 20. And for the first 10 minutes [of my run], I was like, 'Why am I doing this?'"
Of course, nobody makes it to the elite ranks of any sport without pushing through more than a little discomfort, and Kara's bestselling book Strong: A Runner's Guide to Boosting Confidence and Becoming the Best Version of You is all about overcoming mental and physical barriers in pursuit of your goals. Read on to get her tips for staying mentally and physically on track and preventing your running habits from falling by the wayside in Winter.
1. Get the Right Gear
Kara has some particular - and well-considered - preferences when it comes to getting dressed for her cold-weather runs. "I am definitely a lightweight mitten person. I'm sponsored by Oiselle, and they make really great lightweight mittens that you can swipe across a GPS watch - it'll sense your fingers," she says, adding with a laugh: "When it's cold, little gloves are worthless." Kara also prefers vests to jackets because they leave her arms free and keep her core warm without making her overheat. For icy and snowy conditions, she also recommends a pair of lightweight Yaktrax cleats ($23) for the bottoms of your shoes.
With Winter's shorter days ahead, many of us will also be doing more running when the sun has yet to come up or has already gone down. Kara says a headlamp and reflective clothing is important to have on hand if you're planning to go on an outdoor run at night. One piece of gear to skip when you're running alone in the dark? Headphones. "If you're going to run on your own, no music, try to be really alert," she says. "Just to give yourself that extra layer of safeness, ask a friend to meet you or bring your dog, and just be careful."
One last unexpected pro tip for those seriously cold runs? "Ever since I was a kid, if it's below 10 degrees outside, I put Vaseline on my face," Kara says. "It makes a barrier so you don't get frostbite."
2. Warm Up - but Not Too Much
Warming up in chilly weather is vital to prevent injury and help steel yourself for the cold. But don't overdo it, Kara warns. "You don't want to bundle up and do something for too long," she says, "because then you'll start to sweat and go out and then [you'll be] cold." Instead, she recommends doing five to 10 minutes of dynamic stretching, then throwing on your last layer just before you leave the house.
3. Enlist Family and Friends to Cheer You On
Kara says she uses her Apple watch to help prompt a little kindhearted competition - and a lot of encouragement - with her friends and family. "My mom and my sister constantly challenge me," Kara says. "You can do these seven-day challenges, and they always laugh because they're like, 'We're never going to win, but . . .' It's just like another little way to like encourage each other on."
Kara says using technology can be a great way to encourage fellow runners to stay active when lounging on the couch under a blanket sounds more compelling. "I follow a bunch of my friends, and when they close their rings, it notifies you, and you have the option to say 'Good job' or 'You're a sucker' or whatever," she laughs. "It's just a way to encourage each other."
4. Focus on This Run - Not Your Loftiest Running Goal
Kara writes about the importance of goal-setting in her book, but she also encourages tackling those goals in more manageable pieces. So, instead of thinking about how you're supposed to clock 30 miles this week when the weather forecast promises frigid temperatures today, tomorrow, and for the foreseeable future, just focus on what you want to achieve on this run. "If your ultimate goal is to run a 5K, set smaller goals along the way," Kara says. "That's attainable."
5. Remember Why You Run in the First Place
When outside forces threaten to derail your training, Kara says it's good to take a step back and reevaluate. "I always just remind myself of the goal that I have, and it doesn't take very long after I remind myself of that that I think: 'I need to go and get this done.'"
Kara also recommends getting your run out of the way, right away, as a good course of action. "Of course, it depends on your schedule," she says. "But I think when you wait on it all day and then you get home, and it's 5 o'clock, and it's dark, and it's still snowing out, the likelihood that you're going to go out and do it then is probably pretty slim."
For even more of Kara's expert advice, visit the Apple Union Square store in San Francisco on Dec. 6. There, she'll be talking running motivation with Apple's senior director of fitness for health technologies, Jay Blahnik.
The 10 People You Meet at the Gym in January
The start of a new year means new beginnings for those who are just starting their journeys to getting fit, but for those avid gym-goers who have a steady routine and a quiet space to work out, it means crowds and, yes, a little inconvenience. You know what we're talking about: going to the gym in January means seeing crowds of new people who are kick-starting their resolutions - a group some call the "new year, new me" crowd.
Of course, we're in full support of starting a healthy routine anytime, anywhere (and we all know there's a serious learning curve when it comes to finding a sweat routine that's just right for your body and schedule), but that doesn't stop us from seeing some patterns with the new friends we see those first 31 days of the new year . . . and sometimes never again. Ahead are the characters we always come across.
According to the Experts, This Is Exactly How to Lose Weight and Keep It Off
If it feels like almost everyone around you is constantly trying to lose weight, you're not imagining things. The Center for Disease Control estimates that 70 percent of Americans are either overweight or obese, and predictions show that number will continue to increase. The reason is that no matter how big the weight-loss industry gets, the amount of people who are successfully able to lose weight (and more importantly, keep it off) is relatively small compared with the number that actually tries.
In an effort to understand the science behind how to effectively lose weight, POPSUGAR spoke with industry expert Dr. Justin Holtzman of the Holtzman Medical Group. "The most effective way to lose weight, and studies have shown this, is that you need to limit your total calories per day," Dr. Holtzman explains. "The most effective way to do this for long-term success is to track everything you eat every day, have a calorie limit, and don't exceed that limit".
Along with using this practice as a way to eat more mindfully, it also offers an excellent way to gauge how much you're really consuming on any given day. "If, for breakfast, you're having one cup of cereal and a half a cup of milk, measure each and write that down in a journal," Dr. Holtzman continues. "The beauty of the world we live in now is that we have apps that measure everything for us. I personally like Weight Watchers to track points for caloric intake, because it steers you toward foods that are less calorie dense. And by steering you toward foods that are less calorie dense, you stay fuller longer. You still have the volume of food, but you're not storing those calories as fat. This leads to long-term success in weight loss."
Rebecca Lee, registered nurse and founder of the natural health resource RemediesForMe.com, also offers excellent food suggestions to help with weight loss. She recommends apple cider vinegar (known to stimulate weight loss), coconut oil (which is a healthy fat that's metabolized differently in your body than other fats), probiotics (to help protect the natural flora in the gastrointestinal tract), water (which helps boost the metabolism), fiber (which adds bulk to food without an increase in calories so you stay full longer), and green tea (when digested, it signals stored body fats to be released into the bloodstream to be used as energy).
POPSUGAR also spoke with Jill McKay, certified personal trainer and founder of Narrow Road Fitness, about her tips for effectively losing weight. She explains that when it comes to diets, it's not one size fits all. McKay encourages people to "set yourself a plan that works for you. Not all plans works for all people - if there was a way to eat healthy, everyone would be doing it!" She also explains that you have to "stick to the boundaries you set for yourself. Remember, you are the ONLY one responsible for your eating (and exercising) habits. Your body is different from others', so your metabolism may be faster or slower than someone else's. You may respond better to a Paleo style of eating, whereas someone else may have more success at a vegan lifestyle." McKay also cautions that you should give yourself a reasonable amount of time to lose weight, saying, "Weight creeps on slowly, but it also takes a long time to lose. Consistency over time is important." It's also important to note that you should always seek medical consultation before starting or drastically changing any diet plans.

A Calorie Comparison of Your Favorite Beers
If you're watching your waistline and enjoying an ice-cold brew, then might want to do a little research and how beers compare (or you might just want to sit back and enjoy your IPA, in that case no need to read further). What to Know About the Beachbody Meal Plan Your Friends Are Obsessed With: the 21-Day Fix
Whether you spotted the brightly hued boxes while scrolling through Instagram or first noticed them stacked in the office fridge, you probably know someone who's on the 21-Day Fix Eating Plan, just one of the many popular programs from fitness giant Beachbody. But what is it, exactly?
As the name suggests, the 21-Day Fix Eating Plan is a three-week nutritional plan that coincides with Beachbody's 21-Day Fix fitness regimen. Convenience is key here - those on the program purchase a set of seven color-coded containers ($10) that help ensure you eat the proper portions of each food group (green for vegetables, red for proteins, and so on), without ever counting calories. You simply add basics like your weight and height to the 21-Day Fix app, then eat the prescribed amounts.
The plan simplifies meal prep with a ton of Fix-approved recipes and food items available through Beachbody. Combined with a daily 30-minute workout from Beachbody trainer Autumn Calabrese, it's a simple and effective program for those who want to lose weight but aren't sure where to start.
If that's you, it's worth asking your friend with the rainbow assortment of containers how she's feeling so far.

There's no denying that walking is a great form of exercise. Not only is it accessible pretty much anywhere you are, it's also easy on the joints and an activity all fitness levels can enjoy. However, if you're walking and noticing that your scale won't budge, there are a few tweaks you can make to turn walking into a fat-burning motion.

If you're on the keto diet, you already know that flour-battered, fried foods are out - but that doesn't mean you have to pass up KFC entirely, if what you're really craving is some Southern comfort food. Just skip the breading (or if your family really insists, pick it off your own pieces) and try this perfectly keto combo, plucked straight from the menu:
- Order grilled chicken. Order a bucket of Kentucky Grilled Chicken and you'll walk out with a selection of thighs, breasts, drumsticks, and wings that are perfectly seasoned. Reach for the thighs first if you need a cut higher in fat.
- Have some greens. You'll have to skip the mashed potatoes and mac and cheese, but you can still fill up with a generous side of green beans or a house salad or Caesar salad (hold the croutons). Choose from any of the salad dressings on the menu, but go easy when pouring them - store-bought dressings can contain hidden sugars.
- Add some extra flavor. Ask for some butter to pour over your green beans or order a dipping sauce for your chicken. The Creamy Buffalo Dipping Sauce and Hot Sauce are relatively virtuous.

I Got Strong Instead of Skinny, and I've Never Been Happier
For most of my teenage years and early 20s, I considered a "great body" to be skinny with thin legs and a booty that was on the smaller, flatter end. I thought my bigger bubble butt was too large for my small frame on top, and I desperately wanted to hide my curves that are now much more embraced, even sought after, in today's world. I'd wear larger tops to conceal my butt, and I'd always feel a little self-conscious when I had to wear shorts, a bikini, or tighter dresses. I've always been a pretty confident person, but there was a piece missing: I couldn't overcome my obsession with how my body looked on a daily basis.
Because I wanted to drop those pounds and look like other people at my school who had skinnier bodies, I developed an unhealthy eating style that persisted for a few years. Cycling through various eating disorders, chronic food guilt, and a compulsive need to think so critically before making food choices, I suffered emotionally all the damn time. I'd plan what I would eat from a restaurant menu a day or two before, going back and forth on what I thought had the least number of calories. I'd decide how much of my meal to eat compared to what others were eating around me. And if I did end up eating more than I thought I should, I'd feel like crap and beat myself up over it for hours and even days. So many wasted minutes were spent obsessing over food, how it affected my body and took me away from getting skinnier, and how not to be so hungry.
As I began to feel happier, stronger, and proud of myself when working out and attaining new fitness goals, that emotional despair went away.
Then something changed. I'm honestly not sure when my goals and perception shifted, but I think they did as I became happier. I had entered a relationship, I had more friends, and I just came into myself more. But I also realized that my body was my body, and I had a booty. I learned to like myself a hell of a lot and was so sick of feeling bad all the time. I wanted to become the best version of myself, not someone striving to fit a skinny ideal. I needed to find that missing link because it was a daily battle with my body and emotional well-being. I wanted to get stronger, not skinnier, and start embracing my body's natural figure.
I told myself that if I was going to have a bigger butt, I might as well make it a toned one! Up to this point, I had been working out on the elliptical only. I couldn't run long-distance, do sprints, or lift weights. I began to go to fitness classes where weights, battle ropes, monkey bars, and resistance bands were included, and I was horrible. I passed out the first time I had a personal training session. Embarrassing.
But I kept at it, and I ended up seeing some great progress. I never thought I'd like to see muscle in my arms or want to have a nice, round tush that was firm and visible. I slowly started to ditch the longer shirts and embraced my curves. They actually made me feel sexier - way sexier than when I was more "skinny fat" during my restricted-dieting years. Now, I'll go out in crop tops to show off the abs I've worked so hard for.
As I began to feel happier, stronger, and proud of myself when working out and attaining new fitness goals, that emotional despair went away. After each set of burpees or every additional squat or renegade row, I felt powerful and bold. I knew I was doing something good for my body, my mind, and my health: I was healing. I knew the difference between right and wrong thinking. Realizing that a stronger body, no matter how "skinny" it is (those who are naturally skinnier are just as beautiful!), is well-nourished and strong was spot on, and honestly, that newfound mindset saved me.
Now I love my body. I love it even when I'm PMSing and have gained five pounds of water weight. I love it after a huge meal when it's a little fatigued and full. I love it when it's pushing me through a HIIT circuit. I love it first thing in the morning and when I go to bed. I love it naked. I love how I feel in it. I learned to love it.
All people and figures are unique, and as long as you love yours and treat it well, that's all that matters. There is no "right" body to strive for.
Now I'm strong and healthy. I make a point of eating protein and veggies and indulging in my favorite cocktails, pizza, and fries. When I eat a protein bar before or after a workout, I feel awesome. I know I'm fueling my muscles and metabolism, whereas before, I'd nibble on a protein bar with food guilt. I got back to enjoying food of all types, listening to my body and feeding it when it was hungry, and falling more in love with my body every day. Picking up those weights for the first time was the greatest gift I could've given myself, and it's made me into the woman I am today.

This 1 Clever Water App Is My Secret to Avoiding Hangovers During the Holidays
During busy social periods like the holidays, it's easy to find yourself overdoing it when it comes to alcohol. With happy hours, holiday parties, and social gatherings, that one cocktail can quickly become three or four. Even if you're good at moderating your intake, the older you get, the harder those hangovers can be to manage. Over the past couple of years, I've found that even a couple of glasses of wine can leave me waking up the following morning with a raging anxiety hangover.
Headaches I can take, but the sinking feeling that I've done something terrible (even though I remember every minute of the night before) is not something I enjoy. Experts agree there is a strong link between alcohol and anxiety, and that's definitely something I've experienced since hitting my 30s. So I decided to look into ways of reducing those anxious feelings (without having to give up alcohol entirely), and one thing that came up again and again as a possible cause was dehydration.
Could it really be as simple as drinking more water? I had my doubts, as I've always been pretty good at drinking water or juice throughout the day anyway, but I decided to try properly tracking my water intake for a while anyway. A few apps I already had (like my Fitbit app and the WW app) allowed me to log my drinks, but I decided to download My Water Balance, which goes one step further. It allows you to log specific drinks, including alcoholic ones, and when you do so, the app will automatically adjust your plain water intake to compensate for the diuretic or dehydrating properties of other drinks (coffee, tea, and soft drinks are all included, too).
Let's just say this was a huge eye-opener. No wonder I was waking up with a dry mouth and feelings of dread. If you thought having a couple of glasses of water at the end of the night was enough to offset three glasses of wine, you're way off. For three months, I made an effort to only go to bed when I'd hit my lofty target of 2.5 liters (about 85 ounces) of water per day. On days when I drank alcohol, the recommended intake would quickly go up, and I must confess I felt like a camel at times, storing away gallons of water. I also needed to visit the bathroom in the night, often twice. But it was worth it, because those anxiety hangovers all but disappeared. I was genuinely amazed by how much of a difference it made.
Though we're all different (and my anxiety is very mild), I definitely recommend installing this app and upping your water intake if you know that alcoholic drinks can have adverse effects on your body or mood. Obviously the best way to avoid these symptoms is to avoid drinking entirely, but not all of us are ready to go completely cold turkey, particularly at such a busy time of year. Practice moderation, have a glass of water by your side at all times, and perhaps you'll wake up on New Year's Day with a clear head for once?

This Is Why You're Always Bloated During Travel - Here's How to Fix It Before Your Next Trip
The process of traveling - especially during the holidays - can be extremely stressful due to traffic, flight delays, and trip cancellations. Besides testing your patience, travel can also disrupt how your body functions. Nope, we aren't talking about tight hamstrings because airlines have reduced how much leg room you have to accommodate more seats; we're talking about your digestive system.
Not exactly the icebreaker conversation you'll want to have with your seatmates, but it's important to know how travel impacts your digestion. To understand how that cross-country flight is messing with your stomach, making you bloated, gassy, and constipated, POPSUGAR spoke to Samantha Nazareth, a double board-certified gastroenterologist in New York City.
"Most people are traveling for hours on end, and not really moving a whole lot. As soon as we sit and don't move, that slows down the movements inside of us called peristalsis," Dr. Nazareth said. Peristalsis is wave-like muscle contractions that are responsible for moving the food you eat from your esophagus to your stomach and your intestines, and eventually, you've got to go number two.
Getting up throughout your flight or stopping at a rest stop to shake out your legs may help slightly, but if you really want to avoid constipation and other stomach discomfort, Dr. Nazareth recommends the following three pieces of advice - and they're easy to do.

1 Mom's Stunning Monthly Milestone Photos Are So Good, You'll Want to Go to Michael's ASAP
After teaching art in schools and museums, Devon Meves knew that she wanted to continue to be creative after having her two children, 2-and-a-half-year-old Theodore - or Teddy for short - and 7-month-old daughter Scotland. But rather than heading back to the classroom, Devon started her blog, U Ready Teddy?, in 2016 as a platform to share art projects and educational activities with other parents. Though she loved doing crafts, the monthly milestone photos she took of her little ones started getting attention on social media for one reason: they're gorgeous!
"I try to think of an idea that is relevant for each month that makes the baby look like they are doing something they couldn't ordinarily do instead of just laying them down on a pretty background - like hanging upside down, cannon balling, or downhill skiing - I use a pair of footie pajamas or a doll to position where I will want the baby to lay and to make sure my spacing is right," Devon told POPSUGAR.
"I try to think of an idea that is relevant for each month that makes the baby look like they are doing something they couldn't ordinarily do."
Once Devon finalizes her layout, she climbs up on a ladder to get the perfect shot. However, getting a baby's attention is often impossible. In order to keep her babies in place, she often enlists the help of a photo assistant, because sometimes you just need an extra set of hands.
"Babies aren't always cooperative, so I have to just work with it," she explained. "Once they are mobile it is 10 times harder, and after about 10 months it sometimes takes a lot of bribery. You can usually count on a baby to grab on to a prop, so sometimes that helps and I have my helper stand on the side of the board where I want the baby to look. Sometimes my favorite pictures happened when I caught them doing something I hadn't planned on."
Read on to get a look at all of Devon's masterpieces so far, and try not to completely steal all of her amazing ideas.

The FDA Is Encouraging Parents to Steer Clear of Teething Necklaces
On Dec. 20, the FDA released a statement warning parents about the dangers of allowing babies to use teething jewelry. The group said that certain teething jewelry worn by either adults or babies can have serious negative health effects.
"The FDA has received reports of death and serious injuries to infants and children, including strangulation and choking, caused by necklaces and bracelets often marketed for relieving teething pain," the report said. "The risks of using teething jewelry include choking, strangulation, injury to the mouth, and infection. Choking may occur if the jewelry breaks and small beads or the whole piece of jewelry enter the child's throat or airway."
Recently, the FDA got a report about a 7-month-old baby choking on a wooden teething bracelet while his parents were watching him. There was also another terrifying instance when an 18-month-old baby died from strangulation while napping with an amber teething necklace.
Rather than opting for an amber, marble, silicone, or wooden teething device, experts recommend "gently rubbing or massaging the gums with a clean finger" or getting your child a rubber teething ring that's not actually frozen, as it could damage the baby's gums.
Enough With Your Elf: This Woman Puts Her Dog on the Shelf, and She Deserves a Gold Medal
Just when you thought you'd seen it all with respect to the very demanding (but rewarding?) annual Elf on the Shelf tradition, a creative southeast Missouri woman upped the ante. Dog owner Linda Kush has ditched the elves entirely and instead, been dressing up her sweet Vizsla and Weimaraner in the decorative costumes. She posts fairly regularly on Instagram, and the images are too darn adorable. This is one habit we definitely want to copy.
