The Best Ways to React to Your Crying Toddler, According to an Expert

The following story, written by Renee Jain, was originally published on GoZen.

It's no secret that hearing our kids cry makes us uncomfortable. Just think about how anxious you feel when your little one tears up without an obvious reason. We know that a newborn's main way to communicate is to cry, yet we still look at it as something to be "fixed". Once that infant becomes a walking, talking toddler, we sometimes expect them to process emotion the way we do, rather than the way they have always done: through crying.

In fact, studies have found that our brains are hard-wired to have an instant reaction to a crying child, making us more attentive and ready to help - and fast! A crying infant triggers our fight or fight response, increasing our heart rate and pushing us into action . . . even if that child is not our own.

It seems we have to react to a crying toddler, but how?

Teacher Reveals to Deaf Students That People Can Hear Farts, and the Conversation That Followed Is So Amazing

There are certain facts most of us will go our whole lives knowing without ever realizing how monumental they really are. Anna Trupiano - a first-grade teacher at a school that serves deaf, hard-of-hearing, and hearing students alike - discovered one such tidbit last month when, during her lesson, a 6-year-old child passed gas in the middle of the classroom.

According to Good, the child's, ahem, fart, was so loud that some classmates turned to look at the child, who was confused by the sudden attention. For the next 15 minutes, Trupiano found herself explaining to a group of deaf students - completely through American Sign Language - that people can actually hear farts.

She shared the conversation on Facebook, and all fart jokes aside, it's one of the most adorable, innocent conversations you'll ever experience.

This Mom Has a Brilliant Hack For Military Families Who Can't Be Together on Christmas

One of the first things anyone will tell you about being a military or first responder spouse is that there are no set schedules. For the children of these brave warriors and heroes, there are many missed dates, including birthdays, school plays and performances, and major holidays. These special and important days will very often be celebrated late or early when the family can actually be together, or skipped entirely sometimes.

This is exactly what Stephanie Davisson was dealing with when she came up with her idea for alternative delivery dates for Santa Claus. In a now viral Facebook post, Stephanie shared a letter she made from the desk of Santa Claus, in which he explained to her children that he does special trips for kids like them who can't always be with their entire family on Christmas. It then lists a few alternative dates for his gift delivery and a message about how Christmas isn't about when you celebrate it, but how.

This beauty of this letter is that it can easily be adapted for more than just the children of military members and first responders. In her post, Stephanie also included Google Doc links for divorced families, flight crew families, and even one for general use.

While it's being widely spread now, Stephanie originally thought it was a fun thing to share with just those closest to her. "I initially posted it for friends only," she told POPSUGAR. "But a friend asked me to make it public, and here we are! I'm very blessed to have been able to help so many people. If it's helped someone this season, I hope they pay it forward."

Being part of a military or first responder family is such a blessing, but it can be hard to manage sometimes. Stephanie's letter from Santa is the perfect reminder that with a little thought and creativity (and support from other families just like us), you can not only always make things work, but make them magical, too.

This Man Visits His Wife's Grave Every Single Day For "Payback," but It's Not What You Think

Ted Richardson, a 93-year-old retired veteran, doesn't let a day go by without visiting his wife Florence's grave at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific in Hawaii. Over the last five years, Ted has arrived at the cemetery to visit his wife of 72 years at 6:30 a.m. sharp. Naturally, after so many visits the groundskeepers began to take notice.

"I always tell her when I go up there, 'Payback time,'" he told Hawaii News Now. And although it's an odd turn of phrase, he means it in the most benevolent way possible. "For 72 years she lost her temper only once - in 72 years! And it was my fault."

"I'll keep going as long as I can go. God will tell me when I've had enough."

Now, Ted is paying her back in flowers. "I use mini carnations because when you first put them in they're just buds. Then about three days later they open up," he said, adding that, "I used to walk up. Then I had to start using a cane."

Although Ted's ritual is beyond sweet, the life they made for themselves is the epitome of a modern-day love story. They met when Ted was 16 and Florence was only 14 years old. But despite their young age, Ted knew she was the one. "I was standing in the hall. The classes were changing and I saw a beautiful girl," he said. "I went home and told my daddy that night I saw the girl I was going to marry."

In fact, Ted admits that Florence was how he made it through serving in the Marines during World War II. All he had to do was look at her photograph. "She was beautiful. I didn't mind looking at her all the time," he said. Shortly after Ted returned home, the pair married.

As for how much longer he'll visit with Florence? He has a feeling he'll know when it's time to stop. "They say, 'How do you keep track?' I have calendars and I mark 'em down every day when I come home," explained Ted. "I'll keep going as long as I can go. God will tell me when I've had enough."

Kaley Cuoco on Fans Suggesting She's Pregnant: "Would You Ask This Straight to My Face?"

No, Kaley Cuoco has not announced that she's pregnant, but she has some choice words for anyone suggesting she might be. On Wednesday, Dec. 19, the Big Bang Theory actress shared a photo of herself and her husband Karl Cook - whom she married in June - sharing a smooch. In the snap, Kaley and Karl are both leaning in, and the material of Kaley's maxi dress is draping down to the ground from where she's bent at the waist. Because of her position and the way her dress dared appear loose around her midsection, commenters on the photo for some reason felt compelled to ask, "When's the baby due??" and, "Are you hiding a baby bump?!?!"

With these comments and so many others piling up on what was simply meant to be a cute photo of the newlyweds, Kaley decided to use her Instagram stories to address the speculation. Over a screen grab of a couple of the rude comments, Kaley wrote: "I"m so sorry I bent over in a way to where my dress billowed in the wind and made you think this. Question. Would you walk up to me and ask this straight to my face?"

Related: The 1 Very Important Reason You Should Never Ask a Mom About Having a Second Child

Spoiler alert: no matter what you *think* your answer to that question is, the correct response is, "No, never in a million years because that is, of course, extremely rude."

So to recap: it is, 100 percent of the time, not OK to decide from one photo of a woman in a maxi dress that she must be pregnant. And it's definitely not OK to ask for clarification. Because even if she was pregnant, until she shares that news with the world, it's none of your damn business.

How Many Calories Do I Need to Eat to Lose Weight? This Formula Breaks It Down

Embarking on a weight-loss journey can feel daunting: you have to modify what you've been eating, start working out, making sure you're getting enough sleep, and try and reduce stress. And while there are many ways to lose weight - keto, intermittent fasting, Whole30, fitness plans, counting macros come to mind- it's not guaranteed that any of these plans will work for you.

If you have tried everything and still aren't seeing the scale budge, it's understandably frustrating. After all, putting so much time and effort into meal prep and reading up on the latest diet trends can be exhausting, especially if you don't see any results. In reality, losing weight boils down to a simple science: burning more calories than you take in. This calories-in, calories-out calculation may seem simplistic, but it does get a little more complicated when you realize that not everyone's bodies burn calories the same.

Before you do anything to try and lose weight, you've got to figure out your daily calorie target. Read on to find out how.

Calculating Basal Metabolic Rate and Total Energy Expenditure

To find out how many calories you burn a day, you need to know your total energy expenditure, or TDEE. It starts with finding your basal metabolic rate (BMR), which you can get measured with a machine like the InBody Test, which sends electrodes through your body and calculates your BMI, body fat percentage, and basal metabolic rate, among other stats.

You can also do a math equation to find your BMR using the Harris-Benedict formula based on your total body weight, height, age, and sex. It's a little more complicated, but it's more accurate than quick-and-dirty formulas found online. For a woman, the calculation is:

BMR = 655 + (1.8 x height in centimeters) + (9.6 x weight in kilograms) - (4.7 x age in years)

For a woman who is 30, 5'6" (167.6 centimeters), and 150 pounds (68 kilograms), her BMR would be: 655 + 301.7 + 653 - 141 = approximately 1,470 calories a day.

From there, you multiply your BMR by your activity level: 1.2 if you're sedentary, 1.375 if you do light exercise one to three days a week, 1.55 if you do moderate exercise six to seven days a week, 1.75 if you're very active (hard exercise every day or exercising twice a day), and 1.9 if you're extra active (hard exercise two or more times per day).

So for that 150-pound person who is moderately active, it would be: 1,470 x 1.55 = approximately 2,280. That's about how many calories your body burns on any given day. To lose weight, you would have to create a calorie deficit.

How to Find Out How Many Calories You Need to Lose Weight

"One pound is equal to 3,500 calories. Therefore, if someone was looking to lose one pound per week, they would need to cut their daily calories down by 500 calories per day," registered dietitian and personal trainer Jim White, ACSM, owner of Jim White Fitness and Nutrition Studios, told POPSUGAR.

If your TDEE is in fact 2,232, to lose one pound a week, you would have to eat 1,780 calories a day to eat in a healthy calorie deficit and see progress on the scale. Ultimately, this formula is just a guideline; you should consult with your doctor or dietitian to determine your exact calorie needs.

This Is Our Favorite Stretch to Do in Bed: Cat and Cow

If you woke up with an achy back, have a stiff back from sitting for an extended period of time, or have tense shoulders and a tight neck from a day in the office - well then I have a simple cure for what pains you. The Cat and Cow stretch is an oldie but goodie that doubles as a great warmup for your spine before just about any activity.

Cat and Cow

  • Begin with your hands and knees on the floor. Make sure your knees are under your hips, and your wrists are under your shoulders. Begin in a neutral spine position, with your back flat and your abs engaged.
  • As you inhale, let your belly soften, arch your back, and lift your head and tailbone. This part of the stretch is called cow.
  • With an exhale, round your spine up to the ceiling pulling your abs toward your spine, and simultaneously tuck your tailbone in (don't clench your tush) and tuck your chin toward your chest. This part is known as cat (think Halloween cat).
  • Continue flowing back and forth from cat to cow, breathing deeply so as not to rush each movement.
  • Repeat for a minute or so and then press your hips back toward your heels, coming into Child's Pose with your arms extended in front of you.

If your back is feeling especially tight, try these back stretches to help loosen things up.

The 1 Nut Dietitians Say to Avoid If You're Trying to Lose Weight

To make sure you stay on track with your healthy eating goals, a small healthy snack can keep you satiated in between meals. Nuts are one of the best options: all-natural, packed with healthy fats, and a good dose of fiber and protein to keep you satisfied. Snacking on nuts as opposed to, say, potato chips or pretzels can keep you on track with you weight-loss goals.

But there are some nuts that are healthier than others. Pistachios, for example, are about 160 calories per ounce (about 50 kernels), and one ounce of almonds is about 160 calories for approximately 23 kernels. On the flip side, macadamia nuts are about 200 calories and 20 grams of fat for just 10 nuts.

"If you are trying to lose weight, I would avoid macadamia nuts because of their caloric density," registered dietitian Michelle Routhenstein, MS, CDE, owner of Entirely Nourished, told POPSUGAR. She added that it's possible to overdo it on any nut, especially if you're not measuring out a serving size. If you just grab handfuls of nuts throughout the day and aren't careful, you could be eating hundreds of extra calories a day, which will impede your weight-loss efforts. Michelle recommends sticking to a one-ounce serving size.

Registered dietitian and personal trainer Jim White, RD, ACSM, owner of Jim White Fitness and Nutrition Studios, agreed that portion size is the biggest problem when it comes to eating nuts. Although he said all nuts can fit into a healthy lifestyle if you portion them out correctly, he agreed that macadamia nuts can be the trickiest since they have the most calories and only two grams of protein per nut.

That doesn't mean you should give up macadamia nuts entirely; they can totally fit into your weight-loss plan as long as you are careful with the serving size and allot for their calories - that is, don't just grab handfuls throughout the day. In general, you should always measure out your food, especially if you're eating something particularly calorie-dense, such as nuts, oils, or avocados.

After Running For 15 Years, I Made This Change and Finally Lost Weight

I started running after college to lose that freshman 40 I was holding onto. I learned a lot along the way, like what socks prevent blisters and how to shop for a sports bra so you don't have to wear two. But what I struggled with was losing weight, specifically belly fat. And after 15 years of running and experiencing two pregnancies, that still-pudgy pooch - although a sweet reminder that I was my kids' first home - was always the thing I pinched and poked when standing in front of a mirror.

So I signed up for a half marathon. I was convinced that all those training runs would surely slim my middle, but when I stepped on the scale, I was completely wrong. I was gaining weight because the hunger that came with those long workouts made me want to eat all the time. After the race, although I made some changes to my eating schedule to lose the weight I'd gained during training, my squishy belly wasn't budging, and it pissed me off. It wasn't like I was going to run more often or for longer distances. It was quite by accident that I figured out how running could help me ditch my mummy tummy.

One morning, I skipped the hour-long flat road run and turned into the woods near my house. I let my dog, Reuben, off leash, and we just started running. My pace was much slower because the terrain was so unpredictable. Rain had eroded away the path, creating holes, plus the slippery wooden bridges, the rocks and logs to leap over, and the hills - man, were there hills! I was huffing and puffing way more than on my previous runs, and my quads, calves, and butt were burning. I had to swing my arms more to get up those steep inclines, and trying to catch up to my dog added a little fire to my step. At the end of my 20-minute run, I felt like I did after running one hour.

After just two weeks of running those trails and those crazy hills, I felt an incredible sense of strength in my legs I hadn't experienced before in the 12 weeks I was training for the half. In the obstacle course that is the woods, my muscles were constantly guessing, since running in the woods is completely different than running on a sidewalk or a treadmill. It's like a dance because there's no monotony of movement. Every step is a little different, a little shift to one side or the other, a little shorter or longer than the one before.

Interval training had always seemed so forced when running through my neighborhood: I felt a little weird sprinting past my neighbor's house, so I skipped them and just stuck to my 9:00/9:30 minute-per-mile pace. But the hills forced me to switch up my pace, and I knew this type of training would be the key to ditching my tummy. Running this way was also really challenging to my mind. I felt a complete sense of calm afterward that I wasn't able to get to unless I did a long training run. Instant runner's high in just 20 minutes? I was floored.

And the added perk? My belly looked slimmer. I could see definition in my obliques - I had obliques! By no means am I saying I have a six-pack after a month of running in the woods, but I see now that I was pushing myself in the wrong way. I was working harder, not smarter. If you're struggling with a weight-loss plateau from running, the answer for you, too, might be found in the woods.

Want to Lose Weight in 2019? Try This Celebrity Trainer's Simple, 4-Week Walking Plan

When it comes to weight loss, celeb trainer and New York Times bestselling author Harley Pasternak, MSc, has a catchphrase: "Strong in the gym, lean in life." The Fitbit ambassador, nutrition scientist, and personal coach to the likes of Amy Schumer, Kim Kardashian, and Rihanna has told POPSUGAR on numerous occasions that the best way to lose weight is easier than you think: just walk more. Here, Harley makes his compelling case and shares a simple, month-long plan to get you started.

Why Walking and Not Running?

"Walking is something that can be woven into the fabric of the day," Harley said. "With running, you need to book a time to do it; you need to dress a certain way, wear specific shoes, be in a specific mindset, have time to shower after and re-dress - you don't have to do that with walking."

Additionally, he told us that there's a "direct correlation" between intensity of cardio and appetite, meaning the more strenuous cardio you do, the hangrier you'll be afterward. "It's why we use the phrase 'working up an appetite,'" he said. So if weight loss is your goal, walking will be your way to lean out in 2019.

The Plan

Harley believes in this approach so much that getting a step tracker is part of his prescribed regimen to his celebrity clients. While adding in steps here and there will certainly add up over time, we asked him for a four-week plan, giving us a target to work with.

"This plan starts off assuming your current step count is 10,000 steps per day," Harley told POPSUGAR. The goal is that by the end of week four, you're walking an additional 4,000 steps per day.

  • Week one: 11,000 steps each day, Sunday through Saturday
  • Week two: 12,000 steps each day, Sunday through Saturday
  • Week three: 13,000 steps each day, Sunday through Saturday
  • Week four: 14,000 steps each day, Sunday through Saturday

Harley acknowledged that "jumping 1,000 steps per day each week can be daunting" and that not everyone is starting at 10,000 steps each day. If you're hovering somewhere closer to 5,000 steps daily, the goal is the same. Add 1,000 steps per day for week one, another 1,000 for week two, and so on until your new daily average is 4,000 steps above your start point.

"For those that are starting at a lower step count, don't stop at the end of week four," he said. "The optimum range of steps is different for everyone, but I haven't met anyone who hasn't been able to physically keep up with 14,000 steps per day unless they have an underlying medical condition."

The goal is the same: "Get to a place where you hit a daily step goal that you can sustain without leading to mental and physical burnout." Sound good? Great. Let's do this.

Emily VanCamp and Josh Bowman are currently enjoying a romantic honeymoon in the Bahamas, and apparently, they have no plans of ever coming back. While we're sure the former 32-year-old Revenge actress is only joking, on Tuesday, Emily posted a black and white Instagram snap of herself hanging out on the beach. "Never leaving 🖤," she captioned it. Along with the shot, Emily also shared a cute picture of her 30-year-old husband playing with their dog, Frankie B, on her story.

Emily and Josh first met on the set of Revenge (which aired from 2011 to 2015), and struck up a romance in 2012. Regardless of when they were taken, we can never get enough photos of Bey and her beautiful brood.
