This Expert Explains How to Exercise For Long-Term Weight Loss, and It Makes So Much Sense
You know losing weight is a concentrated effort and a lifestyle change: you have to eat healthier and in a calorie deficit, exercise, get plenty of sleep, and reduce stress. But even if you do all of the above, you still may be confused as to what type of exercise you should be doing. Isn't cardio supposed to rev up calorie burn and torch fat? But wait - doesn't strength training also build lean muscle and burn calories at rest? Which one is best?
According to personal trainer and registered dietitian Jim White, ACSM, owner of Jim White Fitness and Nutrition Studios, it's important to incorporate both cardio and strength training if you want to lose weight and keep it off for good. And while you probably knew this already, the way he explains it totally changed the way we thought about working out for long-term weight loss.
"The reason for needing both cardio and resistance training in your exercise routine is the way your body burns calories long-term," he told POPSUGAR. "Running is like a debit account (you would create a calorie deficit, but that deficit is a one-time transaction), whereas resistance training is like getting a payout from an investment account (the calories you burn during your exercise continue even after your workout ends)."
So while cardio burns calories as you do it, resistance training (such as lifting weights, bodyweight moves, or using resistance bands) helps build lean muscle in your body, which will burn more calories at rest.
For weight loss, Jim recommends 300 minutes (five hours) of cardio a week. That doesn't have to be intense cycling classes or running laps; it can be as simple as walking more or shoveling snow - anything that gets your heart rate up. You should aim to strength train at least two days a week. Looking for a good place to start? Here are our best cardio workouts and some strength-training exercises to get you on track.

The 6 Worst Ways to Lose Body Fat, According to a Personal Trainer
Losing weight is hard: it requires determination, willpower, and lots of effort. That's why many people seek a quick fix to lose their weight in the form of detox teas, magical supplements, fad diets, and five-minute workouts. But if these methods worked, then everyone would be at their goal weight and no one would be on a diet.
When it comes to losing weight and shedding body fat, it's easy to get confused by all the information we're bombarded with on the internet every day. Scrolling through social media, reading blog posts, and hearing about the latest health crazes all give you mixed messages about how to actually lose weight and keep it off for good.
Personal trainer Max Weber, NASM, ACE, set out to debunk these common weight-loss myths with an Instagram post about how to lose fat. He revealed six ways to lose weight "according to the internet": drinking "magic" detox teas, 10-minute ab workouts, crash diets, using body wraps, endless cardio without strength training, and relying on supplements. Instead of these fads, Weber offered up how to lose body fat according to science: be in a calorie deficit, strength train, do some cardio, get quality sleep, be consistent, and have patience.
Although everyone's body is different and burns fat at a different rate, Weber's list of fat loss dos and don'ts proves that there's no shortcut to dropping weight and keeping it off. Ultimately, it's about eating well, exercising, getting enough sleep, and being patient with the process.

Fortunately, there are lots of options that are easy to prepare and keep stocked in your kitchen. We've rounded up these super-simple recipes From make-ahead breakfast casseroles to scrumptious baked doughnuts, you can re-create in a pinch.
I Channeled Kendall Jenner - and Went Braless at Work
I hopped off the bus in Times Square and started to walk toward the office. That's when he saw me. He shook his head back and forth slowly as he stared down at my chest. "Why do you do that?" the man moaned loudly. Yes, seriously. I sped up into a walk-run, suddenly feeling extremely self-conscious.
I was wearing a sleeveless turtleneck in a fuzzy mustard-colored material so as to distract from my nipples as much as possible. Clearly, it wasn't really working. Plus, a bathroom selfie I had taken in the mirror that morning confirmed it was definitely easy to make out the shape of my boobs. But when I left the house, I had been comfortable. There were no bra straps to slip off my shoulders or underwire to adjust when it dug into my skin. Honestly, I kind of liked the look. I thought my outfit - the aforementioned turtleneck plus a denim skirt with a pair of sneakers - appeared effortless. I added a pair of gold hoop earrings too, which said "polished," but my nipples were just like "whatever." "Is this how it feels to dress like a French girl?" I wondered.
But you should know the reason I decided to ditch a bra in the first place. During a brainstorm with my coworkers, I came up with the idea as an "editor experiment" based on the fact that Kendall Jenner has been all about wearing sheer tops that expose her nipple ring and supermodel sisters Bella and Gigi Hadid have followed suit. (The Hadid sisters don't have nipple rings, but they do have nipples.) And even though these ladies are more well-endowed than I am, they seem very nonchalant about going braless. When I look at their street style shots, I want to put on an outfit that appears to be so easy. "So who's going to try it?" I challenged, looking around the room during our meeting. "Why don't you do it?" someone said. Right. I had unknowingly volunteered myself to go braless, and at that point, I couldn't turn back.
So there I was the next day in a black button-down cardigan - one I usually wear with my Victoria's Secret Bombshell push-up bra. But on this day, there was more of just a sag situation going on. I styled my sweater with cropped high-waisted denim, pointed-toe flats, and artsy earrings I always get compliments on. I wasn't trying to distract from my breasts, but I was, perhaps, trying to channel Audrey Hepburn.
"I can totally tell you're not wearing a bra," my mom blurted out at dinner on this night, as we sat around the table with my cousin who was visiting, my boyfriend (who probably doesn't love that I'm writing a Tale of Two Titties to be posted online), my sister, my grandma (who doesn't even remember where she keeps her bras or what they're for), and, oh yeah, my dad. "Yes, I guess that's the point." I said, again feeling sort of uncomfortable that everyone was now staring at my chest. We're a supercasual family, so it's not like this was such a big deal. But I guess I was surprised by how often people were taking note - even when I was wearing black.
I took a final stance on going braless when the weekend came, and I was able to style my "going out" outfits more easily. Since a night out to dinner with Bae called for a pretty little sundress with complicated bow straps, it felt like such a relief not to have to worry about the placement of stick-on boobs, or as some girls call them, "chicken cutlets." There was zero panic about those guys peeking out from the sides or the top of my dress, and no chance of them slipping down when I started to sweat (partly because it's Summer and partly because the Cioppino sauce was supposed to be spicy).
Related: I Haven't Worn a Real Bra in 4 Months - and I'm Never Going Back
Later that night, I changed into a floral tube top that cinches into a bow at the front and would absolutely have revealed all different smidgens of my bra or bralette if I had attempted to wear one. I threw on the flirty top with cutoffs and sandals and danced the night away. It felt so easy! "This is it! I am French!" I thought to myself as I kicked it to "Despacito" at the bar. Some of the people I am friends with and spend time with on the weekend did notice I wasn't wearing a bra. Jokingly, they called me names like "Titties McGee," which felt a little bit demeaning to me, but in their defense, I told them all about my experiment, and they were very supportive.
All in all, going braless is far less manageable at the workplace. I couldn't help but feel uncomfortable when I was sitting in meetings with the AC blasting and my nipples were the most excited things in the room. But going braless on the weekend? Now that I can get behind - I even think it looks more elegant to make the move with a fancy gown at a wedding. Because really, messing around with boob tape is never fun, and it can cause wardrobe malfunctions and straight-up inconvenience when you're just trying to enjoy the shrimp cocktail instead of having to run to the bathroom every five minutes.
That said, going braless isn't for everyone. There are women who truly need the support of a bra on an everyday basis, and luckily for them, the look is definitely more sleek, polished, and clean. Nevertheless, I don't mind a good fashion experiment every now and then. I could have done without the 8:30 a.m. comments from the man who interrupted my walk to work, but it did help me to draw conclusions about how I felt without a bra on. I do think going a full week without one helped me feel more confident in my own skin.
Not that bra size is of much importance to me, but as a 32A, I wouldn't mind being, like, one cup size bigger. It'd be nice to fill out a bodyhugging top with a plunging neckline, instead of swimming in the material or having to secure a safety pin behind my neck to hold things in place. And I'd love to wear one of those retro-style swimsuits with a half-moon cup and underwire that provides lift. Unfortunately, I don't really have much of anything to "lift." Even so, my boobs became more visible to me during the week I went braless. As soon as I took off my shirt at the end of the day, there they were!
I discovered the natural shape of my boobs, too, because I was always staring right at them when I looked in the mirror. It turns out my boobs aren't perfect minicircles, as they appear to be when I'm wearing a bra. Without a bra, I had to support my own breasts, and I did this by wearing my head high and shrugging off the double takes and widened eyes of the people I passed on the street. I did this by paying attention to my posture. Instead of slouching, I stood up straight. Instead of hunching over at my desk, I perked my head up and rolled my shoulders back. The whole week was a sort of lesson in poise for me, and I'm proud of myself for sticking through it. I'm proud of my boobs, too.

One Brief Scene in Bird Box Offers the Only Clue About What the Creatures Look Like
Warning: Seriously creepy spoilers for Bird Box ahead!
You probably won't be even halfway through Bird Box before you find yourself wondering two questions: what, exactly, are the mysterious creatures trying to kill Sandra Bullock? And what the hell do they look like?!
If you've watched Netflix's sci-fi thriller, then you know the answer to those questions remains a mystery. Sure, our heroine, Malorie (Bullock), might safely make it to a refuge after navigating a few days down a river while blindfolded, but where the creatures came from, what they look like, and if they'll ever be defeated is left ambiguous. However, thanks to one scene featuring a particularly creepy character, we have a hint as to how the creatures might present themselves.
In Netflix's official summary of the film, the monster is referred to as "a mysterious force" that "decimates the world's population." The so-called entity does so by making whoever lays eyes on it commit suicide pretty much instantaneously in the most graphic way they can manage (caving their head in on the corner of a desk, walking in front of a dump truck, lighting themselves on fire, etc.). The only way Malorie and her fellow survivors are able to escape its influence is by making their way through the world blindfolded.
But then a surprising new threat emerges: homicidal people who are driven crazy by the creatures, but who somehow avoid those pesky suicidal urges. Gary, played by Bohemian Rhapsody's Tom Hollander, arrives at the sprawling home where Malorie and the rest of the survivors are staying, banging at the door and begging to be let in. Sweet-natured Olympia (Danielle Macdonald) opens the door for him without consulting anyone else, and at first, it seems like Gary will be a fine addition to the crew (despite Douglas's very loud objections). However, before long, it's revealed that Gary is one of the few human beings out there who can survive after seeing the monsters.
Why is that? Well, it's not clear. We get hints that some of the people who can look at the creatures and not commit suicide suffered from mental illness before the monsters arrived (Gary mentions that he was institutionalized). That doesn't mean they get off scot-free, though - rather than killing themselves, they begin zealously worshiping the creatures and try to force other survivors to "look" at them and join the cause (or kill themselves, whichever).
But Gary's arrival at the house is also the only clue we get about what the creatures might look like, at least to him; he comes equipped with a folder full of charcoal drawings of blurry monsters with screaming mouths full of razor-sharp teeth, black eyes, bug-like appendages, and even one that appears to be wearing a gas mask. Essentially, they look like demons.
We never actually witness what Gary and others like him see, but there are a few clues that suggest the creatures either present themselves to regular people as a person's ultimate sadness or fear. For instance, after Malorie's sister, Jessica (Paulson), sees a creature while driving, her eyes immediately flood with tears and she crashes the car. Then she promptly limps out in front of a garbage truck to end her life.
Something similar happens to the wife of Douglas, John Malkovich's character, when she runs outside to help a wounded, pregnant Malorie. "Mom?" she asks, staring at empty air, before her eyes blossom into a creepy, bloodshot kaleidoscope of oranges and browns (aka what happens to all the eyes of people who "look"), and she willingly climbs inside a burning car. Douglas later tells Malorie that her mother has been dead for years.
While it's pretty obvious that not all the creatures present themselves the same way to people (ex: Douglas's wife seeing the image of her dead mother), Gary's rendering of them might be the closest thing we have to seeing their true form.

Meghan Markle Cozied Up in One of Her Chicest Coats Yet For a Christmas Church Visit
On Christmas Day, Meghan Markle once again took hold of Prince Harry's arm for the walk to church ahead of the morning service, also standing right by Kate Middleton's side. Last year's Christmas church service was one of Meghan Markle's first big royal events since getting engaged to Prince Harry. She pulled it off with aplomb, dressed in a chic beige coat with brown accessories, but Meghan was definitely still finding her feet when it came to picking royally-appropriate outfits.
A lot has changed in 12 months, and it's safe to say the Duchess of Sussex is now a total pro at dressing for occasions when she'll be in the company of the queen. Even as she nears her third trimester of pregnancy, the duchess managed to look chic, appropriate, and put-together in her full Victoria Beckham outfit consisting of a long coat, lightweight midi dress, leather slouch boots, fascinator, and Powder Box purse.
Keep reading to see all the photos of Meghan's festive look, then take a look back at all of her best outfits from 2018.
Kate Middleton Gave Us Another Lesson in Festive Chic With Her Christmas Day Look
The Duchess of Cambridge has always known how to add a little festive touch to her Winter outfits. Her plaid Emilia Wickstead skirt was Christmas party perfection, and at last year's Christmas church service, she wowed in a Miu Miu coat that definitely spread a little festive cheer.
This time around, the duchess continued to perfectly combine festive touches with the classic, more timeless looks we've come to expect from her. Joined by members of the royal family walking to church, she wore a red Catherine Walker coat with a silver brooch and cranberry accessories including a cap, clutch, and suede pumps. Her look was in contrast to her sister-in-law Meghan Markle, who stuck to all black this year.
Keep reading for a closer look at Kate's cozy look, then get a reminder of some of her most stylish looks from the rest of the year.
13 Brands Meghan Markle and Michelle Obama Wear For All the Right Reasons
I'll be the first girl to admit that when I see a really great outfit - especially on the likes of a political leader or duchess - I stop and stare. It's not just about the pantsuit or dress; it's the care and consideration that went into choosing that particular look, perhaps with the help of an attentive stylist. Who will they be speaking to? Where will they be making an appearance, and does the designer they're wearing have any connection to that location? Is their clothing made sustainably? Is it affordable? Does it matter?
To Meghan Markle and Michelle Obama, the answer to each question is just as important as the one before. You see, Michelle has been in the public eye since 2008, and she has certainly set new standards for dressing the part. Throughout her time in the White House, Michelle championed budding, talented designers because she appreciated their craft and paid attention to their education.
"This gown is one of the most tangible things I have left to remember [the 2009 Inauguration]," Michelle said of her spectacular Jason Wu number, which was created for her only one year after Wu was nominated for the CFDA / Vogue Fashion Fund Award. "At the end of the day, today is about much more than this gown. It's also about how with enough focus and determination someone in this room can be the next Jason Wu. Someone can be the next Barack Obama . . . Something you create today can help teach the next generation in a way that nothing else can."
Michelle has continued to rally behind newcomers to the industry, while tapping iconic fashion houses for pieces at times of utmost significance. Meghan Markle has been following in her footsteps, sartorially speaking, since her wedding to Prince Harry in May 2018, when she chose Clare Waight Keller to customize her gown, largely because of her accomplishments - she's the first female creative director of Givenchy, and she was also born in England.
That was only the start of Meghan's many sensible fashion moves. She wore the affordable Outland Denim five times on her Australia tour, a brand with a mission to raise wages and improve training conditions in the garment industry. You won't be surprised to find then that there's a whole list of designers both Michelle and Meghan have in common. And you don't have to be a detective to know that they likely had the same reasons for wearing these brands at just the right moments in time.
Kourtney Kardashian and Sofia Richie Make Me Want to Put on a String Bikini in 40 Degree Weather
Think you've seen your fair share of smoking-hot bikini moments? I've got one more for your book. Sofia Richie joined Kourtney Kardashian and Scott Disick on vacation with their family in Mexico - NBD, just a little pre-Christmas getaway while I sit here shivering in my sweats baking cookies for Christmas - and the ladies spent some time lounging by the beach. While Kourt opted for a black string bikini, Sofia's marigold suit was the perfect contrast.
Kourt and Sofia coordinated in mirrored sunglasses, and when they took a stroll on the sand, Sofia covered up with a makeshift sarong, while Kourt kept it sporty in low-slung board shorts. Ahead, get another glimpse of their swimsuits, then decide whether you favor neutrals or a sunshine hue, and scoop up a similar set for the next time you can escape the cold. I know I will.

100+ Street Style Looks That Defined 2018
I hadn't seen biker shorts worn with such fervor since my family's '91 trip to Disney; sequins took the streets in broad daylight (fun fact: I spotted a girl waiting for the bus in a paliette-covered pencil skirt before 8 a.m.); white boots had become more ubiquitous than a pair of blue jeans. Beyond the runway, it's these trends that defined street style in 2018.
Sure, if you had told us two years ago that we'd be styling biker shorts with blazers, we'd likely have laughed it off and pulled on our mom jeans, thankyouverymuch - but this year's style stars convinced us to dive right in. Not just that, either. We added logo bags to the rotation, threw on our shoulder bags (crossbody style!), and added cowboy boots and animal prints to mix things up. This year gave us nostalgia reimagined with a contemporary lens; in a nutshell, there was enough new outfit inspiration to last 365 days and then some. So, you'll forgive us if we'll be wearing these looks well into 2019.
Read on to relive the best street style looks of 2018, but feel free to file these away for future reference, too.

2018's Top Dog Names Have 1 Clear Thing in Common: They're Very Human
Every year, it seems people get more and more creative with their pets' names. Or maybe it's just that they're looking toward their everyday lives for inspiration. In 2018, that seemed to be the case, with a vast majority of the most popular dog names being ones typically given to humans. Sparky, Spot, and Rover are so 2008.
In a list put together by Rover, all of this year's most popular dog names are names of people you might know, whether it's your neighbor, Charlie, or your former classmate, Lucy. Kate Jaffe, a dog-name curator for Rover, told NPR, "Increasingly, dogs are really the family you choose, and because we have this tight bond with our dogs and they really are a part of our family, it's not surprising to see that the majority of dogs names are human."
You can see the top 10 dog names of the year for both males and females below, and you can find a more extensive list of names and trends on Rover.

Looking to Spice Up Your Drink? Try One of These Ginger-Filled Cocktails
While the kiddos might be looking forward to what gifts they'll be receiving, parents are most likely wondering what cocktails they'll be serving (and drinking) during the holidays.
But even though there are traditional drinks like eggnog and hot toddies, every once in a while you might want to spice things up, and what better way to do so than with a little bit of ginger? A staple in many kitchens, ginger is easy to incorporate in a lot of classic drinks like martinis and margaritas due to the different varieties ginger comes in, such as ginger beer.
Heard enough? Then check out some of our favorite ginger-inspired cocktails and get ready to whip out the mixers. Who said mixing things up had to be hard?!

Forget the Pie and Make These Brie and Fig Bites Instead!
I don't know where I was or what I was looking for, but I stumbled upon a Joy the Baker recipe that sent my heart in a flutter of wild palpitations. It involved puff pastry, brie, and preserves, and I knew I had to create my own version.
Instead of puff pastry, I opted to use pie crust. I envisioned creating little Pop-Tarts pastries, filled with brie and fig preserves. Rather than cut the rectangular shapes by hand, I used a round cookie cutter, because it makes for an easier, faster prep than measuring and hand-cutting the dough squares.
Pie dough thaws fast, so you really need to cut it quickly and throw the pieces back into the fridge to firm up before stuffing and closing them.
The round shape, fork crimping, and "X" on the top give the impression that these are miniature pies! Upon biting into the flaky, layered crust, the salty brie and sweet fig preserves ooze out. It was everything my fluttering heart had hoped for, and these bites disappeared quicker than they were made. Now it's your turn to make these adorable brie bites.

14 Moments That Made This a Truly Sensational and Game-Changing Year For Lady Gaga
2018 shall forever live on in my memory as the year Lady Gaga did that. Don't get me wrong, she's had plenty of incredible 12-month periods before this one, but the special thing about this year in particular is that she broke every Lady Gaga mold that had been previously made for her. This year, Gaga didn't even technically put out a studio album, but she basically wrote one for A Star Is Born. Oh, and then she absolutely broke us with her glorious, transcendent performance therein.
It's true that a lot of her year revolved around this one shining moment; so many of her glorious appearances and press moments came from that film. But in some strange way, the whole ordeal introduced us to a new side of the icon we've born witness to for the past decade. Allow me to break down what made 2018 so special to her . . . and to me, a very delirious fan who is, for lack of a more appropriate phrase, off the deep end.

7 Netflix Hacks You Won't Believe You've Survived This Long Without

American Idol Winners: Where Are They Now?
In case you've forgotten, American Idol used to be wildly different from what it is now. Back in the first season on Fox in 2002, the show was hosted by Ryan Seacrest and Brian Dunkleman, and the judges were the brilliantly mean Simon Cowell, the always colorful Paula Abdul, and everyone's favorite dawg Randy Jackson. The first season also, quite surprisingly, produced one of the most successful winners to date: Kelly Clarkson. Idol was also my favorite show on television, but that is neither here nor there.
Over the years, the show has been canceled and rebooted on a new network and 15 more Idols have been crowned, some having far more success than others. The winners have gone on to release dozens of singles and albums, star in Broadway shows, write books, cross the country on tours, and take home a slew of awards. For a glimpse at what all the winners have been up to since their shows ended, keep reading.

This year is proof that it's Charlotte's world, and we're all just living in it. Keep reading to see her cutest moments in 2018.

Relive 2018, Which Was Definitely the Year of Jeff Goldblum
I've had a crush on Jeff Goldblum since 1993, when the original Jurassic Park movie blew everyone's minds. Few of my fellow high school classmates shared my affinity for Jeff, who was hardly a teen heartthrob. But in recent years, Jeff Goldblum has experienced a renaissance, and I couldn't be happier. Turns out, there are legions of fans who've been fostering a decades-long crush on Jeff Goldblum, and the actor is embracing it. Jeff's daring fashion sense, unique vocal stylings, hypnotic hand gestures, and silver-fox status have made him a viral Internet phenomenon - particularly in 2018.
