These Were the 5 Diets Everyone Was Googling in 2018 (You Probably Can Guess What's #1)

Diets can be as dated as fashion trends. Remember when Atkins, the grapefruit diet, or the cabbage soup diet were all the rage? We may look back on them now with skepticism - who can survive on cabbage soup three times a day? - but there are popular diets that still cycle in and out of popularity.

2018 was all about keto and intermittent fasting, but there were other diets that piqued people's curiosity. According to Google, these are the top five most-searched diets of the year. Curious what they're all about? Save yourself the trouble Googling and scroll through this gallery to see what each diet entails.

1 Common Mistake People Make When Cutting Carbs That Can Cause Weight Gain

Are you trying to eat low-carb? Think all carbs are created equal? Nutrition coach Nikki (known as @justget.fit on Instagram), posted this comparison photo for those watching their carb intake in order to lose weight. Most people think of bread, pasta, rice, and cereal when they restrict carbs, but Nikki wants you to remember that fruits contain carbs, too.

These photos aren't meant to stop you from eating fruit! Rich in fiber, vitamins, and antioxidants, fruit should be eaten as part of a healthy diet, and they are definitely a healthier choice compared to overly processed bread! But these photos are meant to bring awareness that even healthy foods like fruit can contain high numbers of carbs, which if you eat in excess for your body can lead to weight gain.

In this example, a banana has twice the number of carbs as a slice of whole wheat bread. The banana is also higher in calories and sugar and lower in protein. Both of these offer different kinds of carbs - the fruit is simple carbs, and the whole wheat bread is complex - so they break down at different rates. Neither one is "better" than the other. "The point of this is that it is beneficial to know what's what ☝ so you can make informed choices based on your dietary preferences and goals."

This is just something to think about if you're tracking your macros or trying to cut down on carbs. Definitely don't ditch fruit altogether - we're not saying that! But if you eat a lot of fruit, and you're not losing weight, this could be the reason why.

This Is How Much Weight Is Safe to Lose in a Week, According to Weight-Loss Experts

Losing weight is a tough and frustrating endeavor. You have a goal weight or dress size in mind and are eager to get there, but it seems to take forever. Then, you see programs that promise to help you lose up to 20 pounds in a month, and that sounds intriguing - what could be wrong with hitting your goal weight in half the time? Turns out, not only are these diets too good to be true, they can do more harm than good.

Registered dietitian and ACSM-certified personal trainer Jim White, owner of Jim White Fitness and Nutrition Studios, said that while there are plenty of programs that make these lofty claims, it's not advisable. "As your body loses weight, there is a breakdown of both lean muscle and fat," he told POPSUGAR. "Unfortunately, lean muscle is lost before your fat stores."

Caroline Meehan, RDN, agrees. "Weight-loss plans that promote a weight loss of more than two pounds per week, or say 20-30 pounds in one month, tend to be unsafe, unrealistic, and unsustainable," she said.

Instead, Jim and Caroline both said a safe amount of weight to lose is one to two pounds a week. "If one is losing larger amounts of weight than that, it could indicate they are losing more lean muscle mass than fat," Jim said. "When your body loses its lean muscle mass, it will slow down your resting metabolic rate." As your resting metabolic rate drops, you burn fewer calories at rest. "This is why many dieters can lose some weight fairly easily, but then tend to plateau," he explained.

Instead of looking at the big picture and thinking you need to lose 30 or 40 pounds, Caroline advises setting smaller goals that promote sustainable weight loss. "Taking the focus off weight-loss goals and instead focusing on positive lifestyle changes that promote good health are the more important goals we should create for ourselves," she said.

I'm a Trainer and This Is the Exercise That Strengthens My Abs and Glutes at Once

Thanks to almost two years of physical therapy, I now have an arsenal of exercises to strengthen and stabilize my core and glutes. One exercise that my physical therapist recently taught me is the side plank with a clamshell and it's so good, I had to share it with you.

I use this move to activate my gluteal and core muscles, and I was surprised at how challenging it was. You can add this exercise to your warmup or include it in your core workout. Planks are already challenging, and adding the clamshell movement to the plank forces you to stabilize your core muscles. If you're ready to challenge your strength and stability, continue reading.

How to Do a Plank With Clamshell

  • Lie on your left side with knees slightly bent and your elbow underneath your shoulder.
  • Press into your bottom forearm to lift the hips as high as possible, keeping your abs engaged.
  • Raise your top knee to open the thighs like butterfly wings, then slowly lower the knee, completing one rep. The move is similar to the clam.
  • Complete two sets of 10 reps on each side.

Ready to Get Into Shape? Here's How to Set and Attain Your Fitness Goals

You don't have to wait until New Year's Day to start setting fitness goals for yourself - start today! Whether you simply want to add more strength training into your routine or you're trying to lose weight, how you set and approach your goals will make all the difference. If you're ready to start crushing your goals, continue reading.

Tighten and Strengthen Your Glutes in 10 Minutes With This 4-Move Bodyweight Workout

Strengthening your glutes will more than likely make your butt bigger, but that isn't the only reason you should be working your gluteal muscles. Having strong, active gluteal muscles will help prevent dormant butt syndrome (where your glutes stop firing) and will ensure you get the most out of exercises that primarily recruit your glute muscles.

This workout can be used as a mini warmup before you do lower-body lifts, like squats and deadlifts, or it can be used as a quick booty workout.

The 4-Move Workout

Because these exercises will activate your glutes, you don't need to warm up before performing them. Perform one set of each exercise, and take no more than 30 seconds of rest in between each move and 60 seconds in between each set. Complete four sets.

  • Single-leg glute bridge: 10 reps on each side
  • Clamshell: 10 reps on each side
  • Fire hydrant: 10 reps on each side
  • Donkey kick: 10 reps on each side

An Expert Explains Why a Calorie Deficit Isn't Helping You Lose Weight - Here's How to Fix It

Whether you're trying to manage your weight or adopt a healthier lifestyle, it's important to look at how you're fueling your body day in and day out. As a general rule of thumb, most experts in health and wellness advise following a diet that primarily consists of whole, minimally processed foods.

Obesity medicine physician and scientist Fatima Cody Stanford, MD, MPH, explained that when it comes to weight loss and weight management, her strategy for people is to "look at the quality of their diet, as opposed to focusing in on or honing in on some core value," like going low-carb or solely counting calories.

When Dr. Stanford explains why people shouldn't solely focus on counting calories, she'll compare an image of a slice of pepperoni pizza (350 calories) to a meal consisting of tabbouleh, quinoa, chickpeas, and roasted peppers (approximately 700 calories). She explained that oftentimes, people will say they'd rather have the slice of pizza - not because it's good, but because it contains fewer calories.

To navigate this mindset, Dr. Stanford said to focus on the quality of the foods you're consuming instead of the number of calories. Why? "Because I think it's shortsighted . . . It doesn't give you much information," she said. Instead, Dr. Stanford recommends focusing on eating foods that will fill you up, such as lean proteins, whole grains, vegetables, and fruits. This is because these foods tend to have more volume as opposed to a single slice of pizza that "doesn't hit those signals in the brain that tell you, 'You know what? I'm full. I don't want anything else.'"

Although Dr. Stanford doesn't advise stressing over every calorie you consume, it's important to ensure you're eating enough food each day to power your daily activities. The USDA dietary guidelines recommend adult women eat 1,600 to 2,400 calories per day and adult men eat 2,000 to 3,000 calories per day. This number will vary depending on a variety of factors like sex, age, and level of physical activity; this formula can help you determine your caloric needs, but remember to focus on quality foods.

10 Unwritten Rules to Always Follow at the Gym

If there's one place where people's true colors show, it's the gym. It really tests your cleanliness, hygiene, common courtesy, and respect all under one roof - and it's scary to see where gym-goers fail. If you're not sure if you want to date someone or be their friend, take their ass to the gym. Like any other public space, the gym also requires you to follow certain rules of etiquette, even if they're not plastered on the walls. Mind your manners and adhere to the 10 unsaid laws to avoid pissing everyone off.

  1. Put your equipment away: This should be a given, but clearly not everyone understands this concept. Be an adult and return any weights or foam rollers where you found them.
  2. Wipe down machines: There's nothing more disgusting than having to clean off someone else's sweat. Not to mention you're promoting the spreading of germs.
  3. Utilize headphones: This isn't an opportunity to blast your playlist out loud. No one else forces you to listen to their music, so don't do it to them.
  4. Don't reserve equipment: It's fine if you need to step away from your machine to grab some water or use the restroom, but don't keep others from using it if you know you're going to be gone for more than five minutes.
  5. Keep it down: Lifting heavy inevitably results in some grunting, but unnecessary yelling can be incredibly distracting to those around you.
  6. Save your phone calls for later: The gym is not your private office, so refrain from taking long calls in front of everyone. If the conversation is really that important, take it outside!
  7. Be mindful of those around you: It's not very difficult to be aware of your surroundings. If you're blocking someone in the mirror, step aside. If you're standing too close to someone lifting next to you, give them space.
  8. Be respectful: Instead of making fun of the newbie who's not using the equipment correctly, offer to spot them instead. The weight room is an intimidating place to begin with; don't add to the pressure.
  9. Don't sit and text the whole time: If the gym is completely empty, go for it. But if it's prime time, someone may be waiting for you to finish as you sit on the elliptical or bench texting.
  10. Save your snacks for after: Not only are you probably making a mess, but your wrappers and/or crunching are most likely annoying everyone around you.

Now you know the unwritten rules, but do you know what do with all that equipment? Here's a four-week workout plan to follow to help you get back in shape.

Wake Up Your Muscles With This Trainer's 3-Move Total-Body Workout

Avoid the chaos at the gym and do this three-move at-home workout instead. It's quick, but let me warn you now: it's intense. The addition of the gliders (or towel) requires you to stabilize your muscles in order to perform each exercise correctly. If you're ready to strengthen your entire body, give this workout a shot.

The 20-Minute Total-Body Workout

Be sure to warm up before jumping into the workout. This total-body workout can be done with gliders, or you can use a towel or even an old t-shirt on a hard surface. The exercises should be done as a circuit, meaning you'll complete one set of each exercise, taking little to no rest in between. After you've finished one round, take 90 seconds of rest and repeat for a total of three to four rounds.

  • Lateral lunge: 12 reps each leg
  • Knee tuck with pike: 10 reps
  • Single-arm push-up: 10 reps on each arm

Here's How Long It Takes For You to Actually Lose Belly Fat - It's Faster Than You Think

If belly fat is an area you're trying to lose weight from, it may seem like a near-impossible feat. Although there are detox teas and wraps that promise to flatten your belly - spoiler alert - these quick fixes won't work. But you can't spot-target fat loss with exercise either; no matter how many crunches you do or how many five-minute planks you hold, your belly fat won't magically go away.

The good news is, you can torch belly fat and lose some inches around your waist. If you work hard and work smart, you could see results in a matter of weeks.

"Reduction in waist circumference can be seen in as little as two weeks," personal trainer and registered dietitian Jim White, owner of Jim White Fitness and Nutrition Studios, told POPSUGAR. "Although the rate at which inches are lost depends on the person, with increased activity and calorie reduction, it is possible to see noticeable differences in your waistline."

As far as the numbers go, Jim said you have to eat at a 500-calorie deficit each day to lose a pound a week (one pound of fat equals 3,500 calories). Just be sure you're eating at least 1,200 calories a day to keep your body and brain functioning properly. If you are losing weight with a calorie deficit and exercise, you may also be increasing muscle mass while you lose fat, so the scale would not be the best way to measure your progress. Instead, Jim recommends measuring your waist circumference to track fat-loss progress.

"A larger waist circumference is an indicator for cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and high blood pressure," Jim said. "It is possible to lose inches from your waistline within two weeks of beginning a diet and exercise program, with the caveat that those with more abdominal fat will see larger decreases more quickly."

In terms of exercise, he recommends a combination of aerobic exercise, particularly high-intensity aerobic exercise, and strength training. One of the best forms of exercise to target belly fat is Tabata, a style of HIIT exercise that involves 20 seconds of intense work followed by 10 seconds of rest.

With the combination of exercise and nutrition, you will start to see results. Just be sure you are measuring your waist and not just paying attention to the scale.

"Those on a weight-loss plan who focus on both nutrition and fitness have been shown to reduce belly fat quicker than those who only focus on fitness or only focus on nutrition," David Chesworth, certified personal trainer and wellness coach, told POPSUGAR. Bring on the crop tops!

The Worst Nutrition Advice That Dietitians Want You to Stop Following ASAP

It seems like nutrition advice is constantly evolving. First fat was unhealthy, then it was good again. Egg yolks were deemed bad for your heart, but now we can eat them again. Some people eat a strict Paleo diet, while others forgo animal products and eat entirely plant-based. Grains, gluten, and sugar, which used to be staples in the American diet, have been demonized in recent years.

In reality, nutrition is nuanced and there's no one diet that works for everyone. But there is still some outdated nutrition advice that people still wrongly believe is true. With so much nonsense and pseudoscience being spread online and through friends, it's easy to get confused. We spoke to several registered dietitians who want people to stop following this bad nutrition advice once and for all. If you're looking to lose weight or just clean up your diet, make sure you don't fall for these myths.

"Eating Fat Makes You Fat"

Fat was once demonized as the culprit behind America's collective expanding waistline, which ushered in the '80s and '90s low-fat craze. Turns out, that may have done more harm than good.

"Nearly two in three Americans believe that dietary fat is their enemy. But here's the truth: certain fats can actually help you lose weight," Joy Bauer, RDN, CDN, told POPSUGAR. "In fact, you should go out of your way to eat moderate amounts of the good stuff, like monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats found in nuts, seeds, avocado, fatty fish, and vegetable oils." She says these fats can help you slim down and reduce your risk for heart disease. Load up on omega-3 fatty acids like the ones found in salmon, walnuts, flax seeds, chia seeds, and nut-based oils.

"Juicing Will Help You Lose Weight"

Plenty of juice bars offer multiday juice cleanses, which promise to "detox" your body and help you jump-start your weight-loss goals. The problem? You end up ingesting more sugar than other valuable nutrients.

"Juicing is all the rage right now, but by squeezing out all of the juice from a fruit, you are missing out on one of the best parts: fiber! By extracting the juice from fruit, you're leaving behind the pulp, which is where the fiber is," Brooke Zigler, RDN, LD, told POPSUGAR. "Fiber slows digestion, which gives you a steady blood glucose level and sustained energy. It also helps to give you more regular bowel movements, thus reducing constipation. Fiber is a an important part of our diets and is also a great tool for weight loss."

Adding a few vegetable-based juices into your diet each week is a good way to get vitamins and phytonutrients; replacing entire meals or just drinking juice for days at a time is not a good idea. Better yet? Just eat the fruits and vegetables you would juice whole for a more filling, fiber-rich option.

"Fruit Has Too Much Sugar and You Should Avoid It"

As people remove sugar from their diets, they often cut out fruit, which is a source of natural sugars. But cutting out sugar also means you're cutting out valuable fiber and other nutrients.

"When comparing food groups, fruits as a whole have the highest antioxidant levels of any other food group," Dina Garcia, RD, LDN, told POPSUGAR. "You can lessen your blood sugar spike by combining fruit with a food that has protein and/or fat."

"Gluten-Free Snacks Are Healthier"

Gluten-free diets have been all the rage over the last few years, with regular breads, cookies, cakes, and snacks being replaced with their gluten-free counterparts. The problem? These options aren't necessarily any healthier.

"For people with celiac disease, these foods are essential if they want a treat once in a while; however, for the rest of the population, they are completely unnecessary and can be even worse for you than their gluten-containing counterpart," Alyssa Rothschild, RDN, CDN, told POPSUGAR. "Things such as gluten-free cookies and cakes are still cakes and cookies. Also they are usually higher in sugar, fat, and other ingredients to improve their taste."

If you want a gluten-free treat, remember that it's still a treat - it shouldn't be treated as a healthier alternative to any other cookie or cake.

"Sea Salt and Himalayan Salt Are Healthier Than Regular Table Salt"

It seems like every trendy health food is now sprinkled with sea salt or pink Himalayan salt, but they actually aren't much different from regular old table salt.

"While sea salt and Himalayan have a higher mineral content than table salt, based on the amount of salt we generally use, the difference isn't even close to significant," Dina said. "Plus, most people get the majority of their iodine intake from iodized table salt, something most sea salts and Himalayan salts are missing."

"You Need to Ban Carbs to Lose Weight"

High-protein, low-carb diets are all the rage, and many people assume they need to ditch this important macronutrient group altogether to see any success on the scale.

"It's more important to look at the quality of foods that you are eating," Dina said. "I also like to put an emphasis on the importance of eating carbs that are high in fiber. Fiber helps to stabilize blood sugar levels and provides food for the beneficial bacteria in our digestive tracks."

Kim Kardashian Was Shamed For North's Red Lipstick, but Wait Until You Hear the Backstory

North West may only be 5 years old, but she has a passion for makeup. If her tutorials with Mom, Kim Kardashian-West, didn't give it away, the backstory behind her Christmas party look definitely will. Over the holidays, the Kardashian-Jenner family threw an unforgettable Christmas party - with more fake snow than Southern California has ever seen - but it's North's makeup that caused a ruckus on the internet.

After Kim posted a series of adorable family photos on social media, fans were quick to call out her oldest child's makeup look. Some praised her for her confident poses and larger-than-life personality, but others had some things to say about the 5-year-old's lip color. "Love everything minus North's lipstick please let her be a child," one person wrote. "Beautiful Family. My two year old asks to wear lipstick every day. We indulge her and tell her she's pretty. Stop making a big deal of nothing," another added.

While the decision to let her daughter wear red lipstick does appear to have the internet divided, Kim chimed in on Twitter to explain the situation. Not only did her daughter pick out the lipstick herself for the "special occasion," the mom-of-three said, "it might just be a new Classic Red Lip I have launch VERY soon." Read on to see the family's sweet Christmas photos and more about the red lipstick.

Cardi B's Makeup Artist Breaks Down the Beauty Looks in Her 'Money' Music Video

Fourteen seconds into Cardi B's new music video 'Money,' and you've already got an epic wardrobe change. Then another, just seven seconds later. Then 13 seconds later. Throughout the video, there are a total of eight different looks - each one as fierce as the next - and the only thing more attention-grabbing than the blinged-out lingerie and booty pops is the makeup. You can thank her makeup artist Erika La Pearl for that.

Like the song's name might have you believe, this means the products that went into creating Cardi's bold looks also took some $$$. "For this video, I decided to use one of my favorite brands, Pat McGrath," she told POPSUGAR. La Pearl kindly broke down a few of her favorite moments from the entire shoot for us ahead, and let's just say - they're worth the splurge.

7 Kiss-Proof Lipsticks That Won't Budge After the Clock Strikes Midnight

If there's one thing we learned from the first New Year's special of Friends, it's that you have to be prepared for a kiss that evening (even if it's from your best friend). Whether you're hoping to get a peck from your date or even just the puppy that's been running around the loft of the party you decided to stop by, you're going to want to a lipstick that lasts.

Before you pack your purse for your New Year's Eve festivities, consider bringing along one of these long-wearing formulas - the ones that will last you through that midnight kiss, and all the way through to 2019.

"Negative Space" Hair Is the Coolest Color Trend You've Never Heard Of - but Should Try

With art, manicures, and eye makeup, negative space - the area that surrounds an object or color - is the key to creating a balanced three-dimensional effect unlike anything else. Now, the technique is making its way to hair color, and we have a feeling it's going to be everywhere come 2019. But what is it, exactly?

"It fits perfectly with the push back to a more natural, sophisticated feel - the opposite of the heavy color incarnations and bright blondes."

"Negative space is either your natural hair color against pre-lightened pieces, or we create that negative space with hair color," said Jack Howard, colorist at UK's Paul Edmonds Salon and Schwarzkopf global Blondme ambassador. "This is the look on all the hottest models and influencers filling your Instagram feed. It's lighter around the face and has a balance that's pleasing to the eye. You need that contrast to stop the color from looking solid, which can look like an ombré or a single process."

In a world of extreme hair color hues, the trend is a nice return to subtler times of yore - and there's a way to make it work no matter your base. "It fits perfectly with the push back to a more natural, sophisticated feel - the opposite of the heavy color incarnations and bright blondes," Howard said. How to make the look work for you, coming right up.

These Are the Best Royal Beauty Moments of 2018 - Yes, Including Prince Harry's

Aside from the incredible charity work the British royals are busy with all year round, our attention is often drawn to their fashion, hair, and makeup choices. This year, with more members of the royal household and ever-elegant events to attend than ever, there were plenty of memorable beauty moments.

Meghan Markle pushed some of the strict royal beauty boundaries at the beginning of her relationship with Prince Harry, particularly with her hair. (Who could forget her messy bun that made the headlines?) However, since becoming the Duchess of Sussex, she's transitioned her hair into slightly more polished styles for formal events. And can we take a minute to talk about Markle's savvy lip liner trick and forever-glowing skin?

Kate Middleton also didn't disappoint with her beauty looks this year. She kept her signature smoky eye and blushed skin but also took tips from Markle by adding more bronzer and highlighter than normal. There was no lack of standout hair moments to choose from, either; Middleton stepped out in numerous updos, a ponytail with a bow, and more bouncy blowouts than we can keep up with. But it's not only the women the public turned to for inspiration when it comes to grooming - Prince Harry's beard inspired an increase in sales of items such as beard oil and razors by 226 percent.

Keep reading to see some of the best beauty moments from the royal family in 2018.

I Used to Feel Overwhelmed by Housework - Until This Time-Management Hack Saved Me

Nothing makes me feel more zen than a clean home, but as a mom who works full time, I've learned the hard way that housework can't always be the priority. I used to binge-clean like it was a competition, spending hours dishwashing, folding, and vacuuming with marathon intensity. When everything was done, I'd feel accomplished but exhausted and slightly resentful. The all-or-nothing mindset was a trap, but I didn't know how to get myself out of it. It wasn't until I discovered a simple time-management hack that my relationship with housework finally changed.

In Unf*ck Your Habitat: You're Better Than Your Mess, author Rachel Hoffman suggests setting a time limit for being productive and following it up with a period of rest, such as a 20:10 ratio of work and relaxation. I know it sounds almost childish to adopt the adult equivalent of a chore timer, but the benefits of this system are twofold.

First, I've realized that just 20 minutes of cleaning time on a busy weeknight can be good enough. The intention switches from perfection to improvement. On those nights, that 20-minute timer helps me stay on top of the must dos, accept help for the things I didn't get to (your turn, husband), and let go of the tasks that can wait. The other way it helps? Forcing me to resist the temptation to multitask, which for me is half the battle. On the nights I want to power through another 20-minute session, that 10-minute window is enough time to flip through the magazine I picked up from the floor while cleaning, scroll through my Instagram feed, or respond to that group text that lit up my screen while my hands were covered in dish soap.

I'm able to spend less time cleaning and more time living because the 20:10 method separates them. I'm more productive during my 20-minute spurts, more mindful of the time I am dedicating to housework, and more likely to ask myself, "What really needs to be done now and what can wait?" When my husband and I tag-team using the 20:10 method, it's also easier to knock out less immediate chores like mopping, dusting, toilet scrubbing, and fridge cleaning. We can switch off between spending more focused quality time with our toddler instead of one person taking care of the house while the other person takes care of him. Overall, it's helped create more balance, which, really, is the ultimate reward.

This Stunning Photo of a Mom Clutching Her Rainbow Babies After Birth Will Lift Your Soul

Never has the phrase "a picture is worth a thousand words" been truer than when looking at birth photos. The amount of emotion - relief, joy, and exhaustion, among so many other feelings - that is expressed in those photos is incredible. Right after his wife Anne delivered their twins, photographer Marek Dziekonski snapped one of these pictures - one that shows every single emotion this mom was feeling in a single, still frame.

From the single tear poised to run down her face and the way her brows are slightly furrowed, to the way she's clutching her two newborns with her mouth slightly parted, it's like you can feel everything Anne is feeling, whether you've given birth or not. And for Anne, this particular moment that was caught by her husband conveys even more deep emotion, seeing as the twins are rainbow babies.

Already parents to two boys, Domnik and Leo, the couple got pregnant again before the twins, but unfortunately suffered a miscarriage. Then, when Anne became pregnant with her twins, Ian and Lucy, who are now eight months old, she barely took notice of how big her bump was getting at 18 weeks because she was just so happy to be having a healthy pregnancy. When they found out they were expecting two little ones, the mom, who is one of 14, was actually shocked.

"I didn't have a clue," Anne told Babble. "In fact, just days before [the ultrasound] I was telling friends that I couldn't imagine how moms expecting more than one baby do it, because my belly was torpedoing out so far at only 18 weeks . . . After our miscarriage, it was so humbling to realize that God's plan was greater than either of us could have imagined. We were going to have two babies after all."

Marek, who used to photograph weddings but now focuses on high-end commercial photography, rarely photographs the family's personal life, except for, it seems, birth photos. The dad said he's taken a picture of Anne following each of their children's births.

"The first time Anne sees her babies is one of the moments that has always been extremely important for me to capture," he said. "[It's] the mystifying, incredible miracle that is motherhood. That moment Anne sees her babies for the first time is pure love. Pain and exhaustion take a back seat during that moment."

Anne delivered both Ian and Lucy after about an hour of pushing, and said that that photo taken right after Lucy's birth shows one of the happiest moments of her life. "Once I was holding them in my arms nothing else mattered. It was all worth it. They were mine and I couldn't imagine how I ever lived a day without them."

You're Not the Only One Over Baby Shoes; Princess Diana Didn't Bother With Them Either

Princess Diana was idolized for many things: her philanthropic work, her style, even the way she changed royal parenting as a hands-on mom to sons Harry and William. But there was one superpower she didn't possess, and parents everywhere will nod in unison - the Princess of Wales herself couldn't deal with putting shoes on her babies.

I've never felt so understood by the royals. I've had three babies, and I've been plagued with the problem of baby shoes that don't stay put every. single. time. What parent hasn't had a stranger run up to them in public to return a rogue shoe that unknowingly fell off? Who hasn't spent precious time securing small sandals to chubby baby feet only to find them missing minutes later? Sure, there are some brands that work better than others and likely many more options these days than ever before, but the struggle is still so real.

Based on a handful of images of Diana with both William and Harry that show the boys shoeless at young ages, it would appear the struggle was real for her, too. She didn't even bother with baby shoes during official overseas tours! She forwent footwear during professional family photo shoots! Prince Harry was barefoot on the balcony of Buckingham Palace at the Trooping the Colour! (OMG, right?!)

It's hard to imagine the queen wouldn't take issue these days if Prince Louis paraded around with his toes visible (gasp!), so it's a little shocking that this was a seeming nonissue in the '80s. But even if Kate Middleton doesn't dare skip the important accessory when her children are being photographed (remember when Princess Charlotte's shoe fell off in the family Christmas card?), I am so here for Diana's mothering realness.

Let this be permission for us all to forget the footwear (weather permitting, of course) and the feelings of failure. Next time you've had enough of those adorably tiny tennis shoes or decide to leave the mini moccasins behind altogether, rejoice in knowing that one of the most famous mothers in the world didn't waste her time with that nonsense either.

My New Year's Resolution Is to Spend Less Time With My Kids

Life as I knew it - as a young, career-driven woman in my late 20s - changed forever when I, quite unexpectedly, discovered I was pregnant. Fast-forward two years and I'm a full-fledged mom of two with a schedule that revolves entirely around park excursions, diaper changes, and nap times. My kids are 7 months and 19 months, which means I'm part of the "two under 2" club. And being in this club means that, though I consider myself truly fortunate to be able to spend so much time with my kids, I rarely have any "me" time.

To be clear, that isn't a complaint. But as I'm working on two years in this mommy role, I've come to realize one very significant truth: self-care does, in fact, make you a better mother. Here's the thing: My closest relation lives four hours away, making familial babysitting requests a distant dream - literally. And with the assistance of an awesome and loving nanny, I work two full days per week. That leaves the three remaining days of the traditional workweek solely my responsibility. My husband works long hours, and we both freelance nights and weekends. What that means is this: of 168 hours in a week, 152 are devoted entirely to everyone but myself. Maybe it's just me (I'm no math expert), but something isn't adding up.

Motherhood is beyond exhausting. You're on the clock at all times, even when you're sick, always when you're tired (because you're always tired), and the momentum only seems to accelerate as the children grow. First footsteps are only an inkling of their coming independence, as it also signifies the beginning of heightened exploration (read: more opportunity for curiosity-induced danger zones).

With so much time on the clock, and with so little time to think between constantly trying to decipher who's hungry, who needs their diaper changed, and whether this fever requires a call to the pediatrician, the importance of self-care never occurred to me . . . until I got it. Last month, my husband had an emergency that required him to travel the four hours back to his hometown. The only hiccup: he'd made me a surprise reservation that didn't allow for rescheduling. He told me to stay home, go to my appointment, and he'd take the kids. That decision pretty much changed my life.

The surprise reservation (a birthday gift) turned out to be a two-hour appointment at a Turkish bath with a massage. That alone would have been incredible, but now, unexpectedly, I had also been given an entire weekend to myself. I went out with friends, slept in, binge-watched Netflix, ate brunch, and read a book. I felt rested, happy, energized, and excited. The stress I had been carrying around from not thinking about my needs at all finally started to subside, and I instantly knew the resolution I wanted to make for 2019: make more time for myself and spend more time away from my kids.

Spending time away from my kids doesn't mean I don't love them or want to be with them. It just means that in order to be the best mother I can be, I need to give myself a break once in a while, whether it's an entire weekend to myself or just a 30-minute sweat session in the gym. I've learned that taking the time to recharge isn't a luxury, it's a necessity, and every mom needs to do it.

The Best Thing You Can Do on New Year's Eve? Get a Babysitter

I, like many other people, often find New Year's Eve relatively disappointing. In my 20s, my friends and I would sculpt the perfect plan and hunt for the sparkly outfits year after year. It was all so exciting in theory, but when the night actually came and that ball actually dropped, we were left looking at each other like, "This is it?" It never really lived up to the hype. But something happened after my husband and I had children of our own. On every single New Year's Eve after having our firstborn, Grandma and Grandpa come over to babysit so Mom and Dad can go out. And let me tell you . . . those hangovers are actually worth it.

Now, seven years later, we have ourselves a little New Year's Eve tradition with a handful of other couples, and I hope it's one that lasts for many years to come.

The first time we went out on New Year's Eve after becoming parents, my husband and I were both a little nervous. The dangers of drunk drivers on the road and the thought of simply drinking too much myself had me a little worried. I was also expecting that familiar feeling of disappointment at midnight. But we pushed through the anxiousness and went out anyway. And now, seven years later, we have ourselves a little New Year's Eve tradition with a handful of other couples, and I hope it's one that lasts for many years to come.

There are a few key differences in how we celebrate now versus when I was in my 20s that really do make all the New Year's Eve hassle worth it. First, we go to dinner, one where we can engage in adult conversation and finish a warm meal without it getting cold while we cut up chicken fingers into tiny pieces. We tell stories about our kids, toast to the new year, and laugh until our cheeks hurt. Next, while dressed in our glitzy attire, we head to our local bowling alley (not kidding). After a few drinks of liquid courage, we play a few games. Some of our friends can never quite get the hang of it, but the hilarity of it all makes us belly laugh. While I was a little reluctant to go bowling before our first year, it quickly solidified itself as the best decision ever. We have so much fun without the pressure of a fancy party, and last year, I earned my first turkey.

And the fun doesn't stop there.

After the ball drops and we all sing Frank Sinatra's "Auld Lang Syne," we all head to the karaoke bar in the back room of the bowling alley. This is where the true magic (and the drinking that fuels our hangovers ) happens. We sing (probably more like yell) all of the best hits from the '90s and share stories of our younger years over a few too many beers. When we're all karaoke-d out, we take a taxi home. The next day is rough, because we have to juggle being parents with the lack of sleep and slight and constant urge to get sick, but it is oh so worth it.

I know that leaving the kids can be hard, especially on New Year's Eve, but to my husband and me, it's now something we look forward to. That time spent with each other and good friends creates memories that will last a lifetime. It just feels good to let loose sometimes, put on a fancy outfit (or not), and pretend to be young again (even if your joints crack when you sit down). If you love staying home on New Year's Eve, that's cool, too. But if you and your partner are debating over getting a babysitter and having a night out, I say go for it. Who knows? You might even bowl your first turkey.

This Dad Booked 6 Flights So He Could Spend Christmas With His Flight Attendant Daughter

Hal Vaughan, a father whose daughter Pierce Vaughan works as a flight attendant for Delta Airlines, was determined to spend the holidays with her no matter what. So when he found out she had to work on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, he did what any logical dad would do: he booked six flights to spend time with her. Hal's story went viral when a passenger named Mike Levy on a flight from Fort Myers, FL, to Detroit, MI, posted about the experience on Facebook.

"I had the pleasure of sitting next to Hal on my flight back home," wrote Mike. "His daughter Pierce was our flight attendant who had to work over Christmas. Hal decided he would spend the holiday with her. So, he is flying on each of her flights today and tomorrow around the country to spend time with his daughter for Christmas. What a fantastic father! Wish you both a very Merry Christmas!"

Although getting from flight to flight on time definitely wasn't always easy for Hal, Mike said he seemed to be enjoying the extra time he got to spend with his daughter, regardless.

And apparently, her dad's presence made Pierce's shifts a little extra special, too. After seeing her dad's story go viral, she shared Mike's post - tagging her mom Kimberly - and thanked him for giving her dad the recognition he deserves.

"Look ma we made it Kimberly Hal Vaughan," she wrote on Facebook. "Dad's first trip using his benefits was a success! A special thanks to all of the patient, wonderful gate agents around the country and my perfect crew. He made it on every flight and even got first class RSW-DTW (Christmas miracle). [Shout-out] to Mike Levy for being a great first class passenger & helping us to understand how cool this actually is!"

If You Ship Jon Snow and Ygritte, Then You Will Love This Styled Wedding Shoot

It is undeniable that Jon Snow and Ygritte have sizzling chemistry on the silver screen - perhaps because actors Kit Harington and Rose Leslie are a couple in real life. However, in true Game of Thrones fashion, Ygritte was killed off and died in Jon Snow's arms, which was possibly one of the most heartbreaking deaths in a show that is notorious for killing off beloved characters. If you ever wondered what would have happened if the two characters had gotten married, then this styled wedding shoot by photographer Elyssa Kivus is right up your alley!

"Inspired by the real-life love story of Kit Harington and Rose Leslie, we styled a wedding for an alternative Game of Thrones universe where Ygritte and Jon Snow make it to the altar. We even had a snuggly 'direwolf' jump in for some photos," said Elyssa about the styled shoot that took place at The Longhouse. The photos look spectacular and are full of references to the iconic franchise. The decor is absolutely stunning and looks like something right out of the Game of Thrones set, with silver goblets and large metallic candle stands that add to the medieval charm. They even had a three-tiered cake that featured a red dragon and a direwolf, which alludes to House Stark. Keep reading to see the outcome of this wonderful shoot, and keep an eye out for more Game of Thrones references.
