12 Dark and Twisty Shows to Watch After You Finish Killing Eve

Killing Eve has rapidly become a critical darling, fleshing out for Sandra Oh an insatiable lead role after her emotional work on Grey's Anatomy. The British series takes dark and twisty to another level, following Oh's character, Eve Polastri, as she tracks down Villanelle, a murderess whose creepy MO is castration. However, Eve herself soon becomes Villanelle's target, their relationship bringing a whole new meaning to fatal attraction.

There's a lot to love about this BBC series, from its gorgeous and talented main actress to its unnerving cat-and-mouse plot that'll have you on the edge of your seat. While you wait for more episodes to come out, you can transfer your obsession over to other excellent thriller shows like the ones ahead.

The Best Books Written by Black Women in 2018 - and Yes, They're All Magical

It's no secret that I love books by black women - whether they're transporting me to mythic, reimagined corners of Nigeria or planting me firmly in the deep South. There's a certain magic that comes with literature by black women, born of resilience and situated within a literary tradition that's committed to telling the stories of men and women navigating their worlds.

This year, we saw incredible bodies of work published by black women - from the former First Lady's record-breaking memoir to an array of books examining what it means to be black and female in spaces designed to undo your existence. We also saw sharp, innovative, masterworks of fiction, books that serve as windows into experiences so raw and poignant they feel like our own. In other words, it was lit - and certainly worth celebrating.

With that in mind, I've rounded up my top 10 books by black women this year, all of which are a must for your to-read list.

The 10 Best Shows of 2018

Although it might have felt like the world was crumbling down around me this year, TV offered a respite from the madness in the form of fantastic storytelling, diverse casts, and, of course, the Bent Neck Lady. (Yes, I'm still having nightmares.) In a way, it felt like TV has never been better, despite the significant hole left by Game of Thrones. For that reason alone, it was incredibly difficult for me to narrow down the best of the best. Fortunately, like a person dead set on ignoring all of life's responsibilities to binge an entire season of peak TV in one weekend, I forged ahead.

13 Ways Bandersnatch Connects to the Rest of Black Mirror's Complex Universe

Warning: Spoilers for Black Mirror: Bandersnatch below!

Black Mirror: Bandersnatch, the long-rumored interactive episode of Charlie Brooker's sci-fi series, is now streaming on Netflix, which means fans need to dust off their red conspiracy-theorist string and start connecting the story to the rest of the show's universe. Of course, that's easier said than done given the sheer amount of detail that has been packed into each and every episode over the last four seasons (with a fifth on the way). Fortunately we decided to sit through all five endings Bandersnatch has to offer, picking out the most important details that pop up as Stefan morphs from an ambitious video game programmer to a murderous young man with a penchant for flow charts.

Fire Up Your Spotify Queue, Because Barack Obama Just Revealed His Favorite Songs of 2018

If you're looking for a great playlist to listen to as you dance your way into the new year, Barack Obama has you covered. On Friday, the former president shared his annual year-end list of favorite songs, books, and movies via Instagram. And, if there's anything that the lists prove, it's that Obama has an impeccable (and eclectic) appreciation for the arts.

"As 2018 draws to a close, I'm continuing a favorite tradition of mine and sharing my year-end lists," Obama captioned the post. "It gives me a moment to pause and reflect on the year through the books, movies, and music that I found most thought-provoking, inspiring, or just plain loved. It also gives me a chance to highlight talented authors, artists, and storytellers – some who are household names and others who you may not have heard of before. Swipe through to see my best of 2018 list – I hope you enjoy reading, watching, and listening."

While some of his top films include Black Panther, Won't You Be My Neighbor?, and Annihilation, his best-loved book is an obvious winner. As for his favorite songs of 2018? Look ahead to see which tunes made the list!

We All Know Captain Marvel Is Awesome, but Do You Know How She Got So Super?

Warning: Spoilers for Captain Marvel comics ahead!

We are finally getting into the thick of Captain Marvel mania and there is so much to cover. Marvel fans have been more than ready for the hero to make her appearance since the Avengers: Infinity War postcredits scene hinted that she would be playing a pivotal role in the next Avengers film.

One of the biggest theories on how the Avengers will defeat Thanos - and right the universe after his destructive snap - is that Captain Marvel will combine her cosmic powers with Scott Lang's knowledge of the Quantum Realm to save the world. While it's amazing to think that there's a superhero who can help accomplish what all the Avengers we know and love couldn't, it begs the question: what are Carol Danvers's powers and how did she get them?

In the comics, Carol starts off as a NASA security officer who was formerly an Air Force pilot and intelligence agent. She starts investigating various attempts by the Kree and Skrulls (two different alien races battling for control over the Earth) to disrupt America's space program. During her investigations, she becomes entangled in a battle between the original Captain Marvel, aka Mar-Vell (played by Jude Law in the film), and his rival. The battle causes a Kree device known as the Psyche-Magnitron to explode, with Carol caught in said explosion. According to her Marvel bio, Carol subconsciously envied Mar-Vell's powers and the Psyche-Magnitron answered those desires by rewriting her DNA to make her similar to him. Infused with Kree physiology that makes her a human-Kree hybrid, Carol gained numerous abilities that allow her to level-up in badass.

Carol's new powers include flight, enhanced strength, durability, and the ability to shoot concussive energy bursts (which we see a bit of in the movie trailer). We're not 100 percent positive on what the movie will incorporate from Carol's comic book adventures, but there's a good chance she'll gain her powers in a similar way. From what we've seen in the photos from the film, she does meet Mar-Vell at some point, and already possesses her abilities when we meet her. Since we know that Captain Marvel won't be exploring Carol's origin in a traditional way, we can only assume that the way she gains her powers will be told through flashbacks or at least alluded to, like in Spider-Man: Homecoming.

Either way, we're incredibly excited to see her story unfold when Captain Marvel premieres on March 8, 2019.

These Photos of Little Kids With Their Giant Dogs Are Actually Everything We Dream Of

Andy Seliverstoff, a photographer based in St. Petersburg, Russia, is 100 percent confident that dogs are truly man's best friend. While Andy has loved big dogs ever since a long-haired St. Bernard came into his life 25 years ago, he didn't start incorporating them into his work until he was asked to shoot a few photos for some friends years back.

"A couple Summers ago, some good friends asked me to shoot their toddler on a walk," Andy told POPSUGAR. "We agreed to meet at a neighborhood park, and they arrived at the shoot with not just their daughter, but with their dog as well - a fawn Great Dane. So we decided not just to photograph 2-year-old Alice, but her dog, too."

As soon as Andy shared the pictures on social media, they instantly took off for obvious and adorable reasons.

"Giant dogs are devoted, as well as gentle and careful with their little owners and smaller-size dogs."

"I posted these first photo shoots on Facebook and soon found out how popular and touching they were. Nobody, it seems, could remain indifferent to the juxtaposition of those large dogs and little kids," he said. "Since my circle of friends and my hobby as a dog show photographer give me access to a large number of dog owners, I decided to continue working on this subject. That is how Little Kids and Their Big Dogs ($36) was born."

Although Andy's series is essentially every dog-owner's version of heaven, he admits there there is still a stigma out there when it comes to big pups.

"I was always surprised when people asked me things like: 'Aren't you afraid?' and 'How do you cope with it?' This prejudice against large dogs that I encountered gave rise to my idea of showing that the size of a dog doesn't matter at all," said Andy. "Giant dogs are devoted, as well as gentle and careful with their little owners and smaller-size dogs."

Andy hopes to squash any misconceptions about big dogs' demeanors through his work. "It's no secret that some owners who become new parents are concerned about the dog's relative size," he said. "And that's very sad. Large dogs are gentle nurses for the kids who grow up with them. And most surprising is the close, emotional interrelation between the child and his or her great friend. It demanded to be shown."

Scroll through to get a look at some of Andy's stunning photography and try not to adopt a shelter full of pups in the process.

Study Finds That Dogs Obey Women More - the Reason Will Give You a Genuine "Aha!" Moment

Ever wonder why all the princesses in fairy tales have such a great rapport with animals? A 2017 study that is resurfacing online has concluded that, although we can't actually speak to our furry friends like they do in Disney flicks, in real life, women are actually more fluent in "dog" than men. And as a result, dogs are often more obedient to women than their male counterparts.

In the experiment, which was published in the journal Royal Society of Open Science, researchers recorded the sound of nearly 20 dogs growling in different scenarios - guarding food from other dogs, playing tug of war, or feeling threatened by an approaching stranger - and had a small sample of 40 people attempt to identify the context of the growl.

On the whole, humans were good at associating the correct growls with the correct root emotion. But two types of people - women and those participants who were particularly experienced with dogs - consistently scored higher in this task.

Although that might be surprising information, the reason for this increased animal aptitude will probably come as a shock to not one woman. On the contrary, it likely makes perfect sense. Women had a "higher sensitivity to emotional stimuli," the study reported.

"Female participants seem to have an advantage in the recognition of the context," it continued. "It is known that women have a higher emotional sensitivity . . . women are likely more empathetic and sensitive to others' emotions, [which] can help to differentiate better the context of the emotional content of the growls."

Instagram Accidentally Released a Newsfeed Update, and Everyone Lost Their Sh*t

On Dec. 27, Instagram sparked a full-on meltdown by accidentally releasing a newsfeed update that made users everywhere exclaim, "WTF?!" in unison. The app update affected the newsfeed layout, replacing traditional vertical scrolling with a horizontal swiping feature that forced users to tap to advance sideways through photos in their feed, somewhat similarly to Instagram Stories.

Needless to say, the out-of-the-blue change caused a flurry of complaints among users, with many threatening to delete the app altogether. Head of Instagram Adam Mosseri was quick to address the divisive switch-up, describing it as a test gone wrong. "That was supposed to be a very small test that went broad by accident. Should be fixed now," Mosseri wrote while replying to a tweet about the update. He added that any users affected by the change can restart the app to reset things back to normal. Shortly after, Instagram's main Twitter account chimed in, apologizing for any confusion caused by the so-called "bug."

Phew, what a journey that was! Ahead, catch a glimpse at what the wacky update looked like before it got rolled back, followed by all the on-point reactions that flooded Twitter.

If You Ship Jon Snow and Ygritte, Then You Will Love This Styled Wedding Shoot

It is undeniable that Jon Snow and Ygritte have sizzling chemistry on the silver screen - perhaps because actors Kit Harington and Rose Leslie are a couple in real life. However, in true Game of Thrones fashion, Ygritte was killed off and died in Jon Snow's arms, which was possibly one of the most heartbreaking deaths in a show that is notorious for killing off beloved characters. If you ever wondered what would have happened if the two characters had gotten married, then this styled wedding shoot by photographer Elyssa Kivus is right up your alley!

"Inspired by the real-life love story of Kit Harington and Rose Leslie, we styled a wedding for an alternative Game of Thrones universe where Ygritte and Jon Snow make it to the altar. We even had a snuggly 'direwolf' jump in for some photos," said Elyssa about the styled shoot that took place at The Longhouse. The photos look spectacular and are full of references to the iconic franchise. The decor is absolutely stunning and looks like something right out of the Game of Thrones set, with silver goblets and large metallic candle stands that add to the medieval charm. They even had a three-tiered cake that featured a red dragon and a direwolf, which alludes to House Stark. Keep reading to see the outcome of this wonderful shoot, and keep an eye out for more Game of Thrones references.

The Keto Diet Won't Sabotage Your Gains as Long as You Eat This After a Workout

As much as you hear about pre-workout supplements and drinks, what you eat to refuel after a workout may be even more important. Your body needs protein and complex carbohydrates to repair your muscles and help replenish your energy stores. For those on the low-carb, high-fat keto diet, the question then becomes: will too much fat hinder your progress?

To be clear, fats are not the enemy, nor should you fear them - healthy fats may even help burn stubborn belly fat. It's more important to ensure that you're getting an adequate amount of protein after a workout, according to Molly Devine, RD, LDN, founder of Eat Your Keto and advisor to Remedy Review.

"There is only a certain amount of protein that can be absorbed and used by the body, and any amount beyond that gets converted to glucose to be stored as glycogen or fat," Molly told POPSUGAR. She suggests eating about 20 to 30 grams of protein to help replenish the amino acids that build muscle. It may take longer for your body to break down the fat in your diet since it's more calorie-dense, but eventually the protein will reach the muscles - as long as you're eating enough.

Still, Molly explained that you should focus on eating balanced meals, rather than loading up on protein after a workout. Here's her three-step plan for building the perfect post-workout meal on the keto diet:

  1. Start with three to four ounces of your preferred protein, like steak, salmon, or chicken.
  2. Aim for 25 to 30 grams of fat on your plate, from sources like coconut oil or grass-fed butter.
  3. Fill your plate with nonstarchy vegetables for a maximum of 10 grams of carbs. Some options include leafy greens, broccoli, mushrooms, and zucchini.

These Were the 5 Diets Everyone Was Googling in 2018 (You Probably Can Guess What's #1)

Diets can be as dated as fashion trends. Remember when Atkins, the grapefruit diet, or the cabbage soup diet were all the rage? We may look back on them now with skepticism - who can survive on cabbage soup three times a day? - but there are popular diets that still cycle in and out of popularity.

2018 was all about keto and intermittent fasting, but there were other diets that piqued people's curiosity. According to Google, these are the top five most-searched diets of the year. Curious what they're all about? Save yourself the trouble Googling and scroll through this gallery to see what each diet entails.

1 Common Mistake People Make When Cutting Carbs That Can Cause Weight Gain

Are you trying to eat low-carb? Think all carbs are created equal? Nutrition coach Nikki (known as @justget.fit on Instagram), posted this comparison photo for those watching their carb intake in order to lose weight. Most people think of bread, pasta, rice, and cereal when they restrict carbs, but Nikki wants you to remember that fruits contain carbs, too.

These photos aren't meant to stop you from eating fruit! Rich in fiber, vitamins, and antioxidants, fruit should be eaten as part of a healthy diet, and they are definitely a healthier choice compared to overly processed bread! But these photos are meant to bring awareness that even healthy foods like fruit can contain high numbers of carbs, which if you eat in excess for your body can lead to weight gain.

In this example, a banana has twice the number of carbs as a slice of whole wheat bread. The banana is also higher in calories and sugar and lower in protein. Both of these offer different kinds of carbs - the fruit is simple carbs, and the whole wheat bread is complex - so they break down at different rates. Neither one is "better" than the other. "The point of this is that it is beneficial to know what's what ☝ so you can make informed choices based on your dietary preferences and goals."

This is just something to think about if you're tracking your macros or trying to cut down on carbs. Definitely don't ditch fruit altogether - we're not saying that! But if you eat a lot of fruit, and you're not losing weight, this could be the reason why.

Healthy Breakfasts You Can Make the Night Before, Because You Deserve to Sleep In

When you have a belly full of protein, carbs, and healthy fats, you'll be unstoppable for the rest of the day. These easy, healthy breakfasts can be made the night before, and they take hardly time at all.

This Is How Much Weight Is Safe to Lose in a Week, According to Weight-Loss Experts

Losing weight is a tough and frustrating endeavor. You have a goal weight or dress size in mind and are eager to get there, but it seems to take forever. Then, you see programs that promise to help you lose up to 20 pounds in a month, and that sounds intriguing - what could be wrong with hitting your goal weight in half the time? Turns out, not only are these diets too good to be true, they can do more harm than good.

Registered dietitian and ACSM-certified personal trainer Jim White, owner of Jim White Fitness and Nutrition Studios, said that while there are plenty of programs that make these lofty claims, it's not advisable. "As your body loses weight, there is a breakdown of both lean muscle and fat," he told POPSUGAR. "Unfortunately, lean muscle is lost before your fat stores."

Caroline Meehan, RDN, agrees. "Weight-loss plans that promote a weight loss of more than two pounds per week, or say 20-30 pounds in one month, tend to be unsafe, unrealistic, and unsustainable," she said.

Instead, Jim and Caroline both said a safe amount of weight to lose is one to two pounds a week. "If one is losing larger amounts of weight than that, it could indicate they are losing more lean muscle mass than fat," Jim said. "When your body loses its lean muscle mass, it will slow down your resting metabolic rate." As your resting metabolic rate drops, you burn fewer calories at rest. "This is why many dieters can lose some weight fairly easily, but then tend to plateau," he explained.

Instead of looking at the big picture and thinking you need to lose 30 or 40 pounds, Caroline advises setting smaller goals that promote sustainable weight loss. "Taking the focus off weight-loss goals and instead focusing on positive lifestyle changes that promote good health are the more important goals we should create for ourselves," she said.

I'm a Trainer and This Is the Exercise That Strengthens My Abs and Glutes at Once

Thanks to almost two years of physical therapy, I now have an arsenal of exercises to strengthen and stabilize my core and glutes. One exercise that my physical therapist recently taught me is the side plank with a clamshell and it's so good, I had to share it with you.

I use this move to activate my gluteal and core muscles, and I was surprised at how challenging it was. You can add this exercise to your warmup or include it in your core workout. Planks are already challenging, and adding the clamshell movement to the plank forces you to stabilize your core muscles. If you're ready to challenge your strength and stability, continue reading.

How to Do a Plank With Clamshell

  • Lie on your left side with knees slightly bent and your elbow underneath your shoulder.
  • Press into your bottom forearm to lift the hips as high as possible, keeping your abs engaged.
  • Raise your top knee to open the thighs like butterfly wings, then slowly lower the knee, completing one rep. The move is similar to the clam.
  • Complete two sets of 10 reps on each side.

Tighten and Strengthen Your Glutes in 10 Minutes With This 4-Move Bodyweight Workout

Strengthening your glutes will more than likely make your butt bigger, but that isn't the only reason you should be working your gluteal muscles. Having strong, active gluteal muscles will help prevent dormant butt syndrome (where your glutes stop firing) and will ensure you get the most out of exercises that primarily recruit your glute muscles.

This workout can be used as a mini warmup before you do lower-body lifts, like squats and deadlifts, or it can be used as a quick booty workout.

The 4-Move Workout

Because these exercises will activate your glutes, you don't need to warm up before performing them. Perform one set of each exercise, and take no more than 30 seconds of rest in between each move and 60 seconds in between each set. Complete four sets.

  • Single-leg glute bridge: 10 reps on each side
  • Clamshell: 10 reps on each side
  • Fire hydrant: 10 reps on each side
  • Donkey kick: 10 reps on each side

An Expert Explains Why a Calorie Deficit Isn't Helping You Lose Weight - Here's How to Fix It

Whether you're trying to manage your weight or adopt a healthier lifestyle, it's important to look at how you're fueling your body day in and day out. As a general rule of thumb, most experts in health and wellness advise following a diet that primarily consists of whole, minimally processed foods.

Obesity medicine physician and scientist Fatima Cody Stanford, MD, MPH, explained that when it comes to weight loss and weight management, her strategy for people is to "look at the quality of their diet, as opposed to focusing in on or honing in on some core value," like going low-carb or solely counting calories.

When Dr. Stanford explains why people shouldn't solely focus on counting calories, she'll compare an image of a slice of pepperoni pizza (350 calories) to a meal consisting of tabbouleh, quinoa, chickpeas, and roasted peppers (approximately 700 calories). She explained that oftentimes, people will say they'd rather have the slice of pizza - not because it's good, but because it contains fewer calories.

To navigate this mindset, Dr. Stanford said to focus on the quality of the foods you're consuming instead of the number of calories. Why? "Because I think it's shortsighted . . . It doesn't give you much information," she said. Instead, Dr. Stanford recommends focusing on eating foods that will fill you up, such as lean proteins, whole grains, vegetables, and fruits. This is because these foods tend to have more volume as opposed to a single slice of pizza that "doesn't hit those signals in the brain that tell you, 'You know what? I'm full. I don't want anything else.'"

Although Dr. Stanford doesn't advise stressing over every calorie you consume, it's important to ensure you're eating enough food each day to power your daily activities. The USDA dietary guidelines recommend adult women eat 1,600 to 2,400 calories per day and adult men eat 2,000 to 3,000 calories per day. This number will vary depending on a variety of factors like sex, age, and level of physical activity; this formula can help you determine your caloric needs, but remember to focus on quality foods.

10 Unwritten Rules to Always Follow at the Gym

If there's one place where people's true colors show, it's the gym. It really tests your cleanliness, hygiene, common courtesy, and respect all under one roof - and it's scary to see where gym-goers fail. If you're not sure if you want to date someone or be their friend, take their ass to the gym. Like any other public space, the gym also requires you to follow certain rules of etiquette, even if they're not plastered on the walls. Mind your manners and adhere to the 10 unsaid laws to avoid pissing everyone off.

  1. Put your equipment away: This should be a given, but clearly not everyone understands this concept. Be an adult and return any weights or foam rollers where you found them.
  2. Wipe down machines: There's nothing more disgusting than having to clean off someone else's sweat. Not to mention you're promoting the spreading of germs.
  3. Utilize headphones: This isn't an opportunity to blast your playlist out loud. No one else forces you to listen to their music, so don't do it to them.
  4. Don't reserve equipment: It's fine if you need to step away from your machine to grab some water or use the restroom, but don't keep others from using it if you know you're going to be gone for more than five minutes.
  5. Keep it down: Lifting heavy inevitably results in some grunting, but unnecessary yelling can be incredibly distracting to those around you.
  6. Save your phone calls for later: The gym is not your private office, so refrain from taking long calls in front of everyone. If the conversation is really that important, take it outside!
  7. Be mindful of those around you: It's not very difficult to be aware of your surroundings. If you're blocking someone in the mirror, step aside. If you're standing too close to someone lifting next to you, give them space.
  8. Be respectful: Instead of making fun of the newbie who's not using the equipment correctly, offer to spot them instead. The weight room is an intimidating place to begin with; don't add to the pressure.
  9. Don't sit and text the whole time: If the gym is completely empty, go for it. But if it's prime time, someone may be waiting for you to finish as you sit on the elliptical or bench texting.
  10. Save your snacks for after: Not only are you probably making a mess, but your wrappers and/or crunching are most likely annoying everyone around you.

Now you know the unwritten rules, but do you know what do with all that equipment? Here's a four-week workout plan to follow to help you get back in shape.

Wake Up Your Muscles With This Trainer's 3-Move Total-Body Workout

Avoid the chaos at the gym and do this three-move at-home workout instead. It's quick, but let me warn you now: it's intense. The addition of the gliders (or towel) requires you to stabilize your muscles in order to perform each exercise correctly. If you're ready to strengthen your entire body, give this workout a shot.

The 20-Minute Total-Body Workout

Be sure to warm up before jumping into the workout. This total-body workout can be done with gliders, or you can use a towel or even an old t-shirt on a hard surface. The exercises should be done as a circuit, meaning you'll complete one set of each exercise, taking little to no rest in between. After you've finished one round, take 90 seconds of rest and repeat for a total of three to four rounds.

  • Lateral lunge: 12 reps each leg
  • Knee tuck with pike: 10 reps
  • Single-arm push-up: 10 reps on each arm
