A Step-by-Step Guide For Packing the KonMari Way

Before I completed Marie Kondo's KonMari Method of tidying up, I loathed packing for vacation. So much so, I would typically wait until 30 minutes before leaving for the airport to shove everything in a bag and fingers crossed, I would remember my toothbrush. But now that I am a convert for this organizational method, I've applied the same minimalist principles to my packing, and I'm never looking back. Here are some of the key takeaways so you too can pack joyfully.

Start with a suitcase that sparks joy.

During my tidying process, my parents actually got rid of my suitcases accidentally, but I took the opportunity to invest in a new set of ultra-lightweight, rolling suitcases in my favorite color: teal. Before I start packing, I unzip the bag, lay it flat on the floor, and check all pockets for possible remnants from the previous trip (usually cell phone chargers, etc.).

Fold your clothes the KonMari way.

Most of us learned to fold our clothes into thin rectangles and stack the items on top of one another vertically. The problem with this method is you always end up rummaging around your drawer (or in this case suitcase) looking for an item and leaving the whole thing a tangled wreck. Marie Kondo suggests rolling clothes in sort of a triangle shape that stands upright by itself. The clothes are then placed side-by-side horizontally, hugging one another. This makes it so that you can see every single item you own.

This is especially helpful when packing, because you can quickly see if you've forgotten something essential, i.e. underwear. When traveling, gone are the days you have to unload your whole suitcase to find that dang pair of PJs that found its way to the bottom of your bag. When packing, I go the extra mile and refold the clothes so they fit my suitcase perfectly. Then, I lay everything out on my bed (or the floor) until it's time to transfer to the suitcase.

Pull out shoes and accessories.

The KonMari Method is about asking yourself, "What sparks joy?" but when it comes to traveling, I ask myself, "What do I really, really need?" Oftentimes I'll end up putting away a couple of pairs of miscellaneous shoes or dresses and paring down to the bare minimum essentials, so I can zipper my suitcase without the expansion. That way, I know I have some room to spare to pack souvenirs during my trip.

Save toiletries for last.

I leave a hole in the suitcase for my toiletry bag. Meanwhile, I gather my essential toiletries and keep them in plain view on a bathroom counter so I can use them until the last minute. Placing all of the items in a horizontal row (like your clothes) also helps you do a mental checklist before packing them away.

Now that you're all packed up, remember to keep things tidy as you travel! I stash my dirty clothes (still folded) on one side of my bag away from the clean. For whatever reason, this also helps make unpacking a lot easier. You can toss all the dirty clothes in a hamper while transferring the clean, folded clothes back to your drawers.

Here's my list for a weekend trip (as pictured):

  • 3 shirts
  • 2 shorts
  • 3 workout outfits
  • 1 sweatshirt
  • 1 dress
  • 1 jacket (I wear when traveling)
  • 3 pairs of underwear
  • 1 swimsuit
  • 3 pairs of socks
  • 1 pair of tennis shoes
  • 1 pair of sandals
  • 1 pair of wedges/heels
  • 1 bag of toiletries
  • 1 hat
  • 1 pair of sunglasses

This New Instagram Filter Is a Selfie Game-Changer, but There's a Catch

Image before and after the Paris filter.

A few months ago, I received a pleasant surprise from Instagram. Sadly, it wasn't that my timeline was back to chronological order, but I did get a new filter. I saw it immediately because it was the first one to pop up as I swiped to the right. It's called Paris, and similar to how Snapchat has the "pretty filter," Paris blurs the skin so it looks immediately FaceTuned. It's like the contrast of the Oslo filter and the brightness of the Cairo filter had a baby.

It should be noted Paris is not a lens like the Kylie lens (which also smooths the skin in addition to adding a lip color and enhancing your lashes) or the sparkle lens (which makes your skin look like a mannequin's). I figured everyone received this filter until I realized most of my friends and colleagues don't have it. I'm unsure why I was blessed with this random gift from the Instagram gods, but my vanity appreciates it. (Sometimes you really don't want to show off a meteor-sized pimple on your face but desperately need to take to Instagram Stories, you know?) This also makes sense to me because, while I can't verify who has the filter and doesn't, I had been noticing that certain celebrities or influencers looked different in their Instagram Stories. Stories is usually a medium in which the public get see a less-filtered version of these public figures, both in content and in overall appearance. Perhaps the Paris filter is helping them out? Or maybe they're just rich enough to have perfect skin. I wouldn't be surprised by either.

That said, the filter isn't perfect - sometimes it makes the skin look so airbrushed that it appears flat; I've noticed it can accentuate my melasma. (Blah.) I find it's better for video than photos. When I reached out to Instagram for more information, and to find out whether we can expect a user-wide roll out, a spokesperson simply said, "We're always testing new ways for you to express your creativity on Instagram," and that there are no plans to share on the launch of the filter at this time.

Keep reading to see the before and after with the Paris filter, plus how it differs from other "pretty filters" on the platform.

9 Reasons This Small Colorado Town Should Be Next on Your 2019 Travel To-Do List

Like most people, I traveled to Breckenridge, CO, the first time for the skiing. And although the skiing is fantastic, it's not what's kept me going back multiple times a year for the past five years. In fact, I spend far more time in Breck now when the slopes are closed for the season.

So what keeps me coming back? It's the people and the unique culture they've created in this small town high up in the Rockies. Whether I'm living the laptop lifestyle and working from Breck between hikes or simply hanging with friends and enjoying craft cocktails and beers on outdoor decks, I've never been anywhere with so many chill, laid-back young people. Here's why Breckenridge should be next on your 2019 travel stops.

Heart-Shaped Starburst Jellybeans Are Available For Valentine's Day and They're So Stinking Cute!

Valentine's Day isn't for another month, but Starburst fans already have love on the brain. Starburst's Heart-Shaped Jellybeans have officially made their way to candy aisles, which basically means that, from here on out, you're probably not going to hear the end of it in terms of Valentine's Day candies.

Instagram user Candy Hunting posted a photo of the special candy in December. "Christmas is over, so on to the next food holiday! Found these new Starburst Heart Shaped Jellybeans at Rite-Aid," the caption reads. According to the pic, the jellybeans come in red and pink colors, with the red beans being cherry flavored and the pink ones strawberry. Although Candy Hunting spotted the beans at a local Rite-Aid, they can also be purchased at Target for just $4 per bag. You should probably start building up your candy stash ASAP since these will likely only be available for a limited time.

Dark Chocolate Oreos Were Just Released, and Heck Yes, They're a Permanent Flavor!

Out of all the crazy flavors Oreo has ever released, can you believe Dark Chocolate hasn't existed until now? Fans of smooth, dark, bitter chocolate can rejoice, because beginning on Jan. 2, Dark Chocolate Oreos will be available nationwide - and not just as a limited-edition offering. The new flavor is permanent! The cookies feature a dark-chocolate-flavored creme sandwiched between two classic Oreo chocolate wafers. They look like chocolate overload in the best possible way. Yet another new release in 2019 is Carrot Cake Oreos with cream cheese frosting, so it looks like we've got some grocery shopping to do.

Carrot Cake Oreos Are Here, and Oh My Gosh, There's Cream Cheese Frosting in the Center

Oreo is ringing in 2019 by blessing our taste buds with a brand new flavor: Carrot Cake! Rumors about this release have been swirling around on social media, but Nabisco finally put our cravings to rest by bringing them to shelves at most major retailers - permanently! Rather than a regular ol' chocolate cookie, these droolworthy Oreos feature two carrot cake-flavored wafers with cream cheese frosting creme in the center. As far as I'm concerned, they're totally New Year's resolution diet-approved because, ya' know, carrots are vegetables, after all.

So far, Carrot Cake Oreos have gotten pretty rave reviews from dessert-lovers everywhere. One satisfied Instagram user noted that "the carrot cake cookie provides a lingering ginger and nutmeg spice with a present carrot flavor . . . and the sugary buttercream frosting provides the perfect tang to replicate cream cheese." Meanwhile, someone on Twitter described them as tasting "exactly like Dunkaroos," so yeah, we're pretty convinced to give 'em a try ourselves. Who's with us?

Trying to Lose Weight? This Is How Often You Should Work Out, According to Experts

You know that working out is essential to shedding pounds, but if you're unsure exactly how to structure your routine, you're not alone. Let's get one daunting question out of the way: how often you should exercise, whether that's at the gym, at home, or pounding the pavement. The answer?

"Find something you enjoy (or can at least tolerate), and work your way up to exercising five to six days a week, with at least one rest day per week," Stephanie Blozy, MS, an exercise science expert and owner of Fleet Feet in West Hartford, CT, told POPSUGAR.

While the best exercise is one you like enough to keep coming back to, Kyra Williams, an NASM-certified personal trainer in Tampa, FL, suggested focusing on HIIT and strength training for fat loss.

She recommended lifting weights as part of your workout three to four days a week. "Perform three to four sets of eight to 12 reps of each exercise, using the heaviest weight possible," Kyra explained. This way, "you'll be lifting for hypertrophy or muscle building."

High-intensity interval training, meanwhile, increases your calorie burn both during and after your workout, incinerating fat. So, on days when you're pressed for time, "You can burn the same amount of calories in 15 minutes as you would during 45 minutes of low-intensity exercise, like walking or bike riding," Stephanie said, noting that both forms of exercise have a place in any workout plan.

Ultimately, the experts agreed that the frequency of workouts can vary based on your schedule. "If you realistically only have three days a week to work out for one hour, you can get results. If you have 30 minutes five times a week, you can get results in that time frame," Kyra said. "While I would never suggest exercising for less than 90 minutes a week, two days of lifting for 30 minutes is better than zero."

The Meatballs That Fooled My Meat-Loving Husband and 12 Other Must-Try Trader Joe's Vegan Products

I haven't eaten meat since I was 13 (almost 30 years!), not only because I want to live a more compassionate life and do good for the environment, but also selfishly, because I feel amazing when I eat a plant-based diet. Of course, I want my husband to reap the same benefits, so I try to get him to go meatless most nights of the week, and with these Trader Joe's products, it's a cinch. No joke - I served him Trader Joe's Meatless Meatballs without telling him, and he said, "You didn't have to buy me meat, I know how you feel about it." I just smiled and told him I loved him, then later posted a video of him enjoying his dinner on Facebook. He saw the video an hour later and yelled, "What else have you been lying to me about?!"

Moral of the story: if your goal is to eat a more plant-based diet, buy those meatless meatballs! And while you're cruising the aisles of your local Trader Joe's, pick up these 12 other meatless products.

5 Simple Tips For Creating Resolutions You'll Actually Stick With in 2019

Despite what all the memes might try to tell you about how it's inevitable - and humorous - that you'll fail at all your attempts to be a better version of yourself starting in the new year, the reality is that simply doesn't have to be true. Yes, it can be tough to stick to lofty goals you set for yourself on Jan. 1, but it is also totally possible to use the gift of a new calendar year to put new healthy habits into practice.

For me personally, this last year was proof I could make resolutions that I actually accomplished and stuck with throughout the whole year. Here are some simple steps to consider when trying to take your goals from resolutions to reality.

If "Working Out More" and "Getting a 6-Pack" Are Your 2019 Goals, Do This 30-Minute Workout

Chiseled abs, we're coming for you! We're eating clean since "reducing belly fat ultimately comes down to how you eat," according to head CrossFit coach Jade Jenny. And we're watching our calorie intake since eating too much can lead to greater fat deposits, including around the belly, explained Seattle-based registered dietitian nutritionist and Arivale Coach Ginger Hultin, MS, CSO. But we're also working out, because once that layer of belly fat is history, we want to reveal our sculpted six-pack.

That's why spot training by doing hundreds of crunches doesn't work. You need to take a total-body approach to reach your goal and change your body composition. If diet alone isn't helping you shed body fat, Stephen Cheuk, personal trainer and founder of S10 training in NYC, recommends doing strength training and "conditioning-based training" to see results. If you're new to working out, aim to work out two to three times a week, and if you have exercise experience, aim for five times a week.

ACE-certified fitness trainer John Kersbergen told POPSUGAR that whether a person exercises two to three times a week, or even five times a week, it's OK to hit the core every time you work out. You should "just be conscious of working the whole core including the posterior (lower back) and working through different ranges of motion and varying the exercises."

If you can't make it to a gym and don't have access to weights, we've got you covered! Here's a half-hour workout that combines cardio with core-carving bodyweight moves. This workout is intense, but it's fun, so turn up your favorite music and enjoy this sweat session that's sure to make you sore tomorrow.

Cleaning Up Your Diet Is Easy - Here's How to Do It

There are many diets out there that will tell you what to eat - how much of this and how little of that - or when you can eat. But when it comes to nourishing and fueling your body, you simply need to focus on eating clean. By this we mean eating minimally processed whole foods; think fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, whole grains, and healthy fats. Eating clean means focusing on the quality and variety of of the foods you eat to ensure you get all the macro- and micro-nutrients you need. Macros include carbs, protein, and fat; and micronutrients is an umbrella term for vitamins and minerals.

I know that sounds a little abstract, so let's break it down by food groups. And since one of the great parts of eating clean is carbs. Let's start there.

Be sure to check out this two-week plan that teaches you how to eat clean with recipes, printable shopping lists, and meal-prep ideas.

Ditch the Lame "Get in Shape" Resolution For 1 of These Instead

Getting in shape is one of the most common new year's resolutions year after year, and for good reason. Whether you want to feel more confident in your skin, lose weight for health reasons, have more energy, or just feel stronger, getting in shape can be one of the best ways to achieve all kinds of worthwhile goals. A staggering number of people fail at their fitness-related resolutions, though, and setting goals that are too broad or too undefined - like "get in shape" - is one of the reasons.

Research shows that we have a better shot of achieving goals that are specific and quantifiable, meaning we know exactly what success will look like and we can measure our progress along the way. "Get in shape" can mean vastly different things to different people, and if you don't know exactly what it means to you, how can you possibly achieve it? Instead, here are 10 resolutions that offer more specific, measurable goals that just might help you get in the best shape of your life in 2019.

10 Unwritten Rules to Always Follow at the Gym

If there's one place where people's true colors show, it's the gym. It really tests your cleanliness, hygiene, common courtesy, and respect all under one roof - and it's scary to see where gym-goers fail. If you're not sure if you want to date someone or be their friend, take their ass to the gym. Like any other public space, the gym also requires you to follow certain rules of etiquette, even if they're not plastered on the walls. Mind your manners and adhere to the 10 unsaid laws to avoid pissing everyone off.

  1. Put your equipment away: This should be a given, but clearly not everyone understands this concept. Be an adult and return any weights or foam rollers where you found them.
  2. Wipe down machines: There's nothing more disgusting than having to clean off someone else's sweat. Not to mention you're promoting the spreading of germs.
  3. Utilize headphones: This isn't an opportunity to blast your playlist out loud. No one else forces you to listen to their music, so don't do it to them.
  4. Don't reserve equipment: It's fine if you need to step away from your machine to grab some water or use the restroom, but don't keep others from using it if you know you're going to be gone for more than five minutes.
  5. Keep it down: Lifting heavy inevitably results in some grunting, but unnecessary yelling can be incredibly distracting to those around you.
  6. Save your phone calls for later: The gym is not your private office, so refrain from taking long calls in front of everyone. If the conversation is really that important, take it outside!
  7. Be mindful of those around you: It's not very difficult to be aware of your surroundings. If you're blocking someone in the mirror, step aside. If you're standing too close to someone lifting next to you, give them space.
  8. Be respectful: Instead of making fun of the newbie who's not using the equipment correctly, offer to spot them instead. The weight room is an intimidating place to begin with; don't add to the pressure.
  9. Don't sit and text the whole time: If the gym is completely empty, go for it. But if it's prime time, someone may be waiting for you to finish as you sit on the elliptical or bench texting.
  10. Save your snacks for after: Not only are you probably making a mess, but your wrappers and/or crunching are most likely annoying everyone around you.

Now you know the unwritten rules, but do you know what do with all that equipment? Here's a four-week workout plan to follow to help you get back in shape.

Stay More Present in Your Everyday Life With This 1-Week Mindfulness Plan

It seems like we're constantly plugged in: scrolling through social media, listening to podcasts, and streaming TV shows take up all of our free time. But have you ever stopped to just take a big breath and be mindful? "Mindfulness" has become such a buzzword over the last couple of years, but what does it actually mean?

David Schiller, author of Mindfulness: Ideas and Inspiration to Open Your I, best describes mindfulness as "intentional seeing" in his book. To break it down, it means to "hit pause, slow down, try to let go of the endless stream of thoughts, and just focus on what's in front of us." This means being aware of your surroundings and your thoughts, and to be fully present.

Since we are so used to having distractions running in the background - listening to music in the car, watching TV while cooking, streaming a podcast while gardening - it's rare we are actually present and focused on what we are doing. Although that seems like a big ask, here are everyday ways you can incorporate mindfulness into your life. For just a couple of minutes a day, you can focus on your breathing, tune out your thoughts, and keep your mind on the simple task at hand.

We've compiled a one-week plan for being more mindful each day. Since mindfulness isn't meditation exactly, you may also want to add a few minutes of guided meditation into your day. The following opportunities for mindfulness will help you de-stress, focus, and have more energy for the rest of your busy life.

If Losing Weight Is Your 2019 Goal, 4 Experts Say to Eat This (It's So Simple!)

With so much weight-loss advice swarming around, it can feel so confusing and daunting to figure out how to get started. It doesn't have to be! Since losing weight is a lifestyle change, what you do to reach your goal should feel simple and sustainable. We asked four registered dietitians what the easiest way to start losing weight is, and all four agreed: eat more veggies!

Ilana Muhlstein, MS, RDN, cocreator of Beachbody's 2B Mindset nutrition program, told POPSUGAR that vegetables are the food group you want to be filling up on the most. "They are high in volume and weight and fill up our stomachs, which helps us register the feeling of fullness," Ilana said. When you're hungry and sit down to eat a meal, she recommended getting in at least five to six bites of veggies first. This could be from a fresh green salad, sautéed mushrooms, or a few spears of roasted asparagus.

Registered dietitians Stephanie Clarke, RD, and Willow Jarosh, RD, of C&J Nutrition agree and say that veggies are also high in fiber, so they'll satiate your hunger longer, helping you consume fewer daily calories. The veggies with the highest amount of fiber include brussels sprouts, broccoli, peas, and green beans.

Registered dietitian Leslie Langevin, MS, RD, CD, of Whole Health Nutrition added that dinner isn't the only time to get your veggies in. She said to include veggies in every single meal and snack. They're low in calories, which means you can eat tons without gaining weight. During breakfast, throw greens or beans in fruit smoothies or add spinach to overnight oats or zucchini to oatmeal. For lunch, make a week of mason jar salads to ensure you get a daily salad. And for dinner, make sure your plate is half-filled with veggies like cauliflower rice or roasted sweet potato.

You can even eat veggies for dessert! Try this recipe for decadent black bean brownies or bake a loaf of chocolate zucchini bread or these banana smoothie muffins made with spinach - just make sure dessert fits into your daily calorie target. See how easy it is to get in your veggies?!

Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard "De-Puff" Their Eyes Together, Continue to Be Goals

The internet's mom and dad, Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard, just added another "ugh, that's adorable" moment to the list. While driving to a photo shoot for a secret project, they wore eye masks together - as most couples would do ahead of a photo opp, right? Bell shared the cute selfie and captioned it, "Your mom and dad are heading to a photo shoot for something really special we have been working on for over a year that we hope you LOVE. Dad is driving safely and we are de-puffing on the way! Xoxo."

Not only did this make us swoon just like every other sweet picture of the couple, but it also made us wonder what eye mask they used. After some very thorough investigating (JK . . . Bell tagged the brand), we noticed it's the Skyn Iceland Hydro Cool Firming Eye Gels ($45 for a 12-pack). The mask has a "cooling gel patch that infuses the eye area with highly potent actives and Icelandic glacial water to firm, tone, brighten and reduce the appearance of puffiness and wrinkles," according to the product description. If it's good enough for Princess Anna, it's good enough for us. Shop the exact mask ahead. Adorable marriage moment NOT included with purchase.

Purple and Silver Toning Shampoo to Keep That Blond Hair Blond

You might have heard about toning shampoo before, but do you know why blondes need it? Also known as purple shampoo, it helps fight off all those orange and brassy tones that often develop after you've dyed your hair a lighter shade. And unless you're going for the brassy look, people typically want to get rid of it. Because the shampoos are typically purple, blue, and gray, they can help cancel out the warm shades on the hair. Interested in trying one for yourself? Invest in some of these choices.

Ariana Grande Wore Monochromatic Pink While Picking Up Dog Poop - Like a True Icon

Monochromatic pink looks are the stuff of curated Instagram grids and artsy magazine shoots, but somehow, Ariana Grande pulls off the look doing something as simple and everyday as walking her dog.

Grande posted the above photo of her in an oversize pink, fluffy coat, but that's not what we noticed first. It was her ultraglossy, watermelon-pink lips (which perfectly matched her shoes) that caught our eye. She captioned the picture "thank u for seven weeks at number 1 🐙 what a beautiful start to this year #thankunext #ipickedupsh*tafterthis." If that last hashtag is true, she certainly looked good doing it.

Maybe it's because we love her, or maybe it's our affinity for pink, but we're living for Ariana Grande's pink-on-pink look.
