Is Cardio Interfering With Your Ability to Lose Fat? Here's What an Expert Has to Say
We know that fitness often gets oversimplified, especially when it comes to losing fat and building lean muscle. With that being said, one thing we know for sure is that clean eating combined with some form of consistent strength training can be beneficial for most. To find out how you can lose fat faster (no, this won't happen in a few days), POPSUGAR spoke with Rondel King, MS, CSCS, an exercise physiologist at NYU Langone's Sports Performance Center.
Rondel explained that there are charts and information at the gym that explain fat-burning zones and where your heart rate needs to be to burn fat. According to Rondel, "There's a lot of variability there because we are all different and will require different heart rates to be in a particular heart-rate zone for you to utilize fat as your fuel source."
He explained that these heart-rate zones are "somewhat directly related to burning adipose tissue as opposed to free fatty acids." Instead of relying on a chart to lower your body fat percentage, Rondel said, "The best thing for you to do is to create an environment that's conducive to weight loss or to utilizing adipose tissue."
This environment doesn't require an elite gym membership or fancy equipment. Rondel said it simply "requires you working out and developing lean muscle mass." Having more lean muscle will increase your resting metabolic rate, which will help you burn more calories at a rested state, Rondel explained.
If you're wondering what types of workouts you should be doing, Rondel said resistance training is a great starting point. "The more muscle you have, the higher your calorie expenditure will be," he said. Rondel also recommends high-intensity interval training to lose body fat because "it produces precursors to things like testosterone and growth hormone and things that will potentially help you increase your lean muscle mass."
HIIT workouts also create an environment that is anabolic, "sparing your muscles, [as] opposed to if you're doing long-distance/steady-state cardio that's more catabolic - breaking down [muscle] tissue." Cardio isn't bad to do, but Rondel explained that it does increase stress hormones like cortisol that are "very catabolic in nature and do not promote tissue growth to an extent." According to Rondel, "Cardio actually breaks down muscle tissue, which can be counterproductive to someone who is trying to lose weight."
At the end of the day, Rondel said, "it all comes down to the individual's goals and where they are in their training" when trying to lose fat. Fat loss is often oversimplified, but it's important to remember "there are a lot of variables that come with it."

Stars are supporting the Time's Up movement again at the 2019 Golden Globes, this time while wearing Time's Up bracelets and ribbons. Attendees, including host Andy Samberg, Idris Elba, and Rachel Brosnahan, wore the accessories around their wrists for the award show in Beverly Hills.
The ribbons and bracelets, while a demonstration of continued solidarity, are also supporting the new Time's Up x2 campaign, representing the second year of the initiative. They were designed by Arianne Phillips and read TIMESUPx2 on them.
Time's Up, as a movement, was created in 2018 to demand fair, safe, and dignified workplaces for all women and piggybacked off the #MeToo movement that specifically targeted putting a stop to sexual harassment. In honor of the Time's Up movement last year, celebrities wore all black at the Golden Globes and Time's Up pins at the Oscars.
In its second wave, Time's Up x2 aims to become an even bigger movement, causing a disruption in society to seek equality. In a recent post to its website, those behind the movement wrote, "We won't stop fighting until there is gender balance in leadership and all women have the opportunity to reach their full potential at work . . . Everything will change when we have more women, especially women of color and women from other traditionally underrepresented groups, making decisions. Period."

Talk about friendship goals! Sandra Oh kicked off her big Golden Globes night by bringing Killing Eve costar Jodie Comer as her date. The 46-year-old actor - and DJ, if you still haven't learned that tidbit - blessed the 76th Annual Golden Globes red carpet alongside his fiancée, Sabrina Dhowre, and his daughter, Isan Elba. Sandra Oh Gushes About Her Parents at the Globes: "I'm So Grateful That They Were Here"
When Sandra Oh stepped backstage at the Golden Globes, she called it "the best night of my life." That sentiment should come as no surprise - the actress stepped out of her comfort zone and agreed to a hosting gig alongside Andy Samberg. Not only that, but she also became the second Asian actor to win the award for best actress, and she gave an incredible speech to boot. Oh, and did I mention that her parents, Joon-Soo Oh and Young-Nam Oh, were there to cheer her on? And that she nailed her hosting gig? Yeah.
POPSUGAR was in the press room for Sandra's postwin interview, where she was asked to comment on her remarkable night. As it turns out, she's not only the second Asian actor to take home the gold in the category. "I think I'm actually the first person of color to have hosted!" she said to the journalist who asked about her benchmark gig. "I'm really grateful to the HFPA to have asked me, and I just think . . . I'm aware of what it means, and I most humbly take that on. All I tried to do was do my best."
Sandra was also asked to talk about what it meant to have her parents there for the occasion. She practically glowed as she talked about it. (Don't worry - she was notified in the press room that her parents had gone viral and were trending all over the internet for being so damn cute.) "As for my parents, who are amazing and amazing people and internet sensations," she said, "they're so happy, and it's just the kind of thing, for Asian kids to make our parents happy; it's so fulfilling. I'm just so grateful that they were here and able to come." Next stop: the Emmys! Especially since Sandra was robbed last year.

Glenn Close Tears Up Talking About Her Mother While Backstage at the Golden Globes
Sunday ended up being a rather emotional night for Hollywood icon Glenn Close, who took home the Golden Globe for best lead actress in a drama. While on stage, Close spoke in her acceptance speech about the power of women and fulfilling their dreams, touching on the fact that her mother sublimated herself to her husband, Glen's father. As it turns out, her mother's story is deeply woven into the fabric of The Wife, for which she won her award.
When Close made her way backstage to the press room, she was asked if she could expound on her mother's story and how that ultimately influenced her performance. POPSUGAR was present for the powerful moment, in which Close described her early life and what she witnessed in her mother and how, ultimately, she was left feeling like she hadn't quite fulfilled her own destiny.
"My mom and my dad got married when they were 18. My dad went off to the war, and my mom, she never went to college. She started having children very early. She had a great artistic mind . . . she always said, 'I made a vow, and I'm gonna stay in this.' But I can't say it was fulfilling for her, for all the potential that she had. She said to me, 'I feel like I haven't accomplished anything.' Of course, as a child, you say, 'No, no, no - that's not true!" . . . I understood what she meant, because there's another part of you that has nothing to do with who's in your life and everything to do with what's in your heart . . . so I hold this, I hold her in my heart, and I'm very moved to get this award for this particular story. For her sake."
Close became incredibly emotional as she spoke about her mother and even stopped at one point to collect herself. She left the microphone on an inspiring, goosebumps-inducing note: "It's never too late to pursue your dreams."
Get to Know Joanna Newsom, Andy Samberg's Talented Wife and Gorgeous Golden Globes Date
Andy Samberg arrived in style for his big hosting gig at the Golden Globes in LA on Sunday. Looking sharp in a tux and bow tie, the former SNL star - who already nailed it as an Emmys host in 2015 - held hands with his beautiful wife, Joanna Newsom. If you haven't heard her name much, it's understandable; Andy and Joanna have kept their relationship pretty low profile since they began dating in 2008. They (very) quietly tied the knot in 2013 and (even more quietly) welcomed a baby girl together two years later.
If you're not in the know, here is the scoop on Andy's wife. Joanna Newsom is a 36-year-old übertalented singer and harpist. She was born and raised in Northern California, classically trained to play the harp when she was young, and has folksy, almost childlike vocals. In 2004, she released her debut album, The Milk-Eyed Mender, which featured songs like "Sprout and the Bean," "Peach, Plum, Pear," and my personal favorite, "Sadie." She gained critical acclaim, releasing three more albums, most recently Divers in 2015.
A few more fun facts about Joanna? She started as a keyboardist in a San Francisco–based band called The Pleased; has appeared in Inherent Vice and on Portlandia (as has Andy); and is the second cousin (twice removed) of Governor Elect of California Gavin Newsom. Pretty cool, right?
Outlander: Will Roger Time Travel Back to the 1970s? Let's Discuss That Cliffhanger
The latest episode of Outlander, "The Deep Heart's Core," ends on a suspenseful cliffhanger. Luckily we've got the scoop from executive producer Maril Davis about how it might not turn out the way viewers are expecting. Read on to find out what she teased for us about next week, but warning: spoilers for episode 10 ahead!
In the episode's waning moments, Roger (Richard Rankin) is on the run, having escaped from the Mohawk tribe to which Ian (John Bell) sold him after the spectacularly awful misunderstanding between everyone about Roger being the man who raped Brianna (Sophie Skelton). While captive, Roger has been counting the days and making note of landmarks so that he can find his way back to Fraser's Ridge and try to make things right with Jamie (Sam Heughan), unaware that it's kind of Jamie who needs to make things right with Roger.
During his dash through the woods, however, Roger happens upon a standing stone, making the same buzzing noise as the ones at Craigh na Dun in Scotland. He immediately realizes the significance of what he has stumbled across, and he even has some gemstones in his pocket, which should help him focus and be able to time travel back to the 1970s. So . . . is he going to leave Brianna behind in order to save his own life from the pursuing Mohawk?!
"What would you do?" EP Davis asked with a laugh when we brought it up to her, adding that anyone would have to consider it if their life were at stake.
"Things have not gone so well for poor Roger," Davis said. "He's had the worst journey of anyone. [laughs] The poor guy got on Stephen Bonnet's ship, he had a horrible falling out with Brianna, a horrible run-in with Jamie, a horrible time in this time. As has Brianna. But that's something we're trying to work with, all these things - you would clearly want to try to save yourself. You're in this time for the love of your life, but there are certain pressures that put the squeeze on you . . . he's in a very dire situation right now."
So, does that mean he's going back? Davis obviously won't say one way or the other, so non-book readers will just have to wait for next week. But she does say that even though there is a lot of book material left to cover in the final three episodes of season four, she thinks they crafted "a very satisfying ending to the season."
"I'm thrilled the way it all worked out," she assured us. "We certainly break out the season where we pull out the tentpole moments and want to make sure we hit everything, and I'm sure that we did that."
Macaulay Culkin's Hilarious Tweets About His Brother at the Golden Globes Are So Savage
Macaulay Culkin knows that it's only OK to troll your family members and close friends, and that's exactly what he did the night of the Golden Globes. One of his brothers, Kieran Culkin, was nominated for best supporting actor in a limited series for his role as Roman Roy in Succession, and Macaulay had a field day on Twitter. He pretended like he had no idea Kieran attended the award show, much less had a nomination.
"HOLY SH*T KIERAN IS NOMINATED??? WHAT IS SUCCESSION?!" the Home Alone star tweeted in real time during the Globes. He even misspelled Kieran's name in one of the tweets (he wrote "Keiran"), which was probably on purpose to add to the "embarrassing older brother" charade. It's a jolly holiday when Dick Van Dyke shows up at the Golden Globes. On Sunday night, the legendary actor made an adorable appearance at the award show as he showcased Mary Poppins Returns alongside his costar Emily Blunt. As the two made their way onto the stage, the 93-year-old was met with a standing ovation from the excited crowd. Emily's husband, John Krasinski, was even spotted cheering from the audience.
