“Fiver” Birthday Parties Are Starting to Catch On, and They’re Actually Kind of Genius

A new(ish) trend is emerging in the kids' birthday party realm - "fiver" parties - and I've got to say, I'm on board.

Every year, I attend the birthday parties of the kids I used to nanny. They're getting older now, and I truly think the stuff and toys are just getting bigger and more expensive as time goes on. I have sat there year after year as they rip open their gifts, either exclaiming "I have this already!" or "I don't want this" or "Yay! I hoped for this," and it's of no fault to them that it gets to be just so damn much - it's their birthday, and they want to open the things they've been presented with. And if you're inviting 15 kids to the party and each of them is coming with a gift, of course things are bound to get a little out of hand - not only that, but each gift opened tends to get less and less special.

This is where the fiver party swoops in to create a more meaningful experience. On the invitation for a fiver party the parent can explain that gifts aren't expected, but should you want to bring something with you (because it can feel awkward to show up empty-handed), a $5 gift card or cash can be gifted to go toward something the child is saving for, or even an experience, like a museum pass or day at the movies. This shifts the birthday party to being more about celebrating with friends and family, rather than a day focused on what gifts they'll get to rip open.

"It was so wonderful and is creating many more memories than a toy could."

Back in June, Today spoke with Sarah Schultz, a mom of three who threw her son a fiver party. "Birthday parties can be so expensive - spending $20 on a gift . . . really limits the amount of birthday parties I let our kids attend," she said, adding that her son combined his Christmas and birthday money to save up for a pet hedgehog. "Braden was very happy with his fiver party and it was a wonderful lesson to teach him about saving money instead of spending money as soon as you get it." Another mother, Rachel Horan, threw a fiver party for her daughter and put the focus of the $5 gifts on getting Michaela a zoo pass for the year, which was a success. "It was so wonderful and [the zoo pass] is creating many more memories than a toy could," she said. "So many parents said they wish they had thought of it with their own kids but were never sure how to word it."

Author Amy McCready, the founder of Positive Parenting Solutions, was skeptical about the concept at first, but shared some of the things she now considers benefits of a fiver party.

With fiver parties, parents and close relatives can still give the child a few gifts, and friends can help contribute to a larger coveted item or experience. To those people [who disagree], I share my insight of being able to have more friends attend, keep the party an affordable event for those kids, and keep those useless gifts that get pushed aside away. I also don't think it's any more tacky than saying your child has a wish list for their birthday and to buy certain gifts for them.

However, Amy thinks that the party idea should be approved by the birthday kid first. Because not every party they go to for their friends and classmates will be a fiver party, they might want a party in which they get a bunch of little toys and gifts from friends. If you're considering a fiver party for your child, chat with them first about the benefits of being able to save up for one or two things they really want, or an experience, and let them approve the idea. If they do, it sounds like you'll all be pleasantly surprised with how it turns out.

This Dad Left Behind a Journal For His 1-Year-Old Son Before He Died, and It'll Make You Sob

After one woman lost her fiancé shortly before her son's first birthday, she made a discovery that would change everything. In a now-viral Reddit thread, the anonymous mom explained how she found a journal her late fiancé wrote to their son seven months after he died. She shared a photo of a page that asked the question, "How do you want future generations of your family to remember you?" and the internet is collectively sobbing.

"That's a hard question to answer," he wrote. "I want to be remembered as a good man who had his shortcomings and demons early in life. But after he got things together, he was an honest, hardworking person who loved to laugh and love, [was] never afraid to lend a helping hand to whoever needed it. A man that had a good family that he loved and would do anything for."

Obviously for the grieving woman, finding the journal meant everything to her. "And I just found it. It was with my son's books. I didn't know he had filled the book out and read through all the entries," she said, adding that, "If he were still alive it would be touching," she explained, "but now that he's gone it's a treasure."

Parents can get their own copy of the journal in question - My Dad: In His Own Words ($11) - and start jotting down their own thoughts and feelings.

Priyanka's Honeymoon Dress Is So Sexy, Nick Probably Doesn't Know What to Do With Himself

While Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas shared just about every detail of their lavish nuptials, including the many outfits Pri wore for the celebrations, they've been a bit more hush-hush about their honeymoon in the Caribbean. That is, until Nick shared an Instagram video of Priyanka swinging on the beach in a bikini, then a shot of the duo posing before going out.

Nick's marigold suit and sneakers was a tropical look, and Priyanka stood by his side in a floral, strapless Caroline Constas maxi with a high slit to reveal her tan sandals. We'd say she was going for a style equal parts romantic and natural. Nick, apparently, had to turn away from his lovely wife, presumably because her sex appeal in this gown was just too much for him. Don't you think?

These Red Carpet Stars Didn't Need to Be Outrageously Sexy to Win Our Hearts

The 2018 Golden Globes were a sea of black dresses on the red carpet, but it was noticeably different at the Critics' Choice Awards. Stars like Kiernan Shipka arrived in bright pastel ensembles, and white dresses outweighed darker hues like black and navy. Some actresses even went slightly sheer and showed up in dresses with cutouts and slits up the hemline. Although there weren't too many outrageously sexy looks on the red carpet, those who decided to be a bit more daring pulled off their outfits tastefully. Read on to take a look, and prepare for the smoking-hot looks bound to step into the spotlight at this year's ceremony.

Lady Gaga Reminds Us of Grace Kelly in This Striking Blue Leather Trench Coat

After wearing a gorgeous light blue Valentino gown at the Golden Globes, Lady Gaga wore the striking color again while attending the hand and footprint ceremony honoring her A Star Is Born costar Sam Elliott. For the ceremony, which took place in Los Angeles, Gaga opted for a sleek leather trench coat by the British brand Fay.

Her Grace Kelly-inspired trench came in a double-breasted design, and she styled it with black Christian Louboutin pumps and Harry Kotlar diamond studs. We Love Meghan Markle's Bag Even More After Seeing This Nifty Detail Hidden Inside

We were so busy obsessing over the cow-print heels Meghan Markle wore for her last outing, we almost didn't notice another swoon-worthy outfit detail: her purse. While visiting Smart Works, a London-based charity organization and one of Meghan's four recently announced patronages, the Duchess of Sussex carried a black leather Victoria Beckham handbag with a gold buckle and top handle. Though the bag looks simple enough to the naked eye, it's actually quite the contrary.

Hidden inside the bag's upper flap is a handy-dandy rectangular mirror - perfect for those dire moments when you need to discreetly remove postlunch remains from your teeth before facing the paparazzi. Seriously, why don't more purses have mirrors hidden in them? Sometimes the front-facing iPhone camera just doesn't cut it.

Unfortunately, Meghan's exact Victoria Beckham handbag is currently sold out everywhere, but never fear - we tracked down a few similar styles, which you can conveniently shop ahead.

This $28 Bodysuit (From Amazon!) Makes Me Look 10 Pounds Slimmer - Now I Wear It Under Everything

All women everywhere, your undivided attention is required. The holy grail of shapewear has been uncovered. I have been hunting for a bodysuit that fills all my requirements, and I finally found it. This Bali Shapewear Lace 'N Smooth Body Briefer ($28) on Amazon is my new obsession. It's cute, lacy, and makes me look 10 pounds lighter - no joke.

I decided to order this bodysuit after plenty of online research. This option has almost 2,000 reviews and 61 percent of customers give it five stars. I first purchased the white version of the design in a 34C and it arrived on my doorstep two days later. I slipped it on as soon as I got home and was pleasantly surprised with how it looked. It smoothed out my torso and slimmed down my stomach, but not like your ordinary shapewear; it actually looked . . . sexy. I tried on some of my favorite dresses that are usually a little snug and holy crap, they looked amazing. This bodysuit is pure magic.

Besides being incredibly flattering, this body briefer also has excellent chest support - the soft cups include underwire so everything stays in place. It also has snaps at the bottom so you can easily take it on and off. After wearing this bodysuit twice, I ordered it in black as well. It looks great under all the clothes I own and it's incredibly comfortable. I don't feel like a stuffed sausage all day (most shapewear is usually incredibly restricting).

I'm telling you, this bodysuit is worth every penny. It's hard to find quality pieces with affordable price tags, and this choice ticks off all my boxes. Treat yourself to the body briefer and you'll be hooked.

The dress retails for $2,490 on Moda Operandi and features an asymmetric angled hem that Blake later compared to the ballgown that Cinderella's stepsisters destroyed. To up the ante, Victoria's button-down, which featured snakeskin-print pipping, was left unbuttoned to show off some skin. Excuse Me as I Dive Into This “Danger Bush” of Kittens That Looks Like a Paradise

Posted by Emergency Kittens on Twitter, a video of a "danger bush" is going viral for the most hilarious (and least threatening) reason - kittens pop out of it, like a game of Whack-a-Mole in reverse, when the person's finger pokes at the hedge.

At press time, the video has been viewed nearly 3 million times, and has been garnering some hysterical (and clever!) reactions. See the video above, and if you can pull yourself away from watching it for the rest of your life, see some of our favorite reactions ahead.

How to Roast Vegetables to Perfection

Looking for a quick, easy, and enticing way to incorporate more vegetables into your life? Roasting may very well be just the solution you need. Not only does the blast of high heat cook vegetables to fork-tender in next to no time, but it also magically caramelizes the edges, making each bite slightly sweet and all the more enticing.

Little more than a bit of prep work and roughly 20-30 minutes of cook time separates your meal from the addition of a brightly colored, mouth-watering, and rather healthy side. And while methods vary slightly from vegetable to vegetable, follow these general guidelines:

  1. Preheat the oven: Aside from tomatoes and other delicate produce, which shine when slow-roasted at a lower temperature (try 200°F), most vegetables benefit from a blast of high heat, as it promotes browning and caramelization; generally, 400-450°F is a good place to start.
  2. Prep the vegetables: Usually this just means a quick scrub with a vegetable brush and a rough chop (1-inch cubes is pretty standard), but some produce like Winter squash requires a bit of peeling and even the removal of seeds but is still very easy to prep. For oddballs like brussels sprouts, trim off the woody stems, peel away any dried-out and tough outer leaves and halve the tiny cabbages so that they have a flat surface to rest on (flat surfaces allow the most pan contact and browning). Smaller root vegetables like carrots can be left whole (just trim off excess carrot tops).
  3. Season the vegetables: The easiest way to do this is to drizzle a half-sheet pan or cast-iron skillet with a healthy helping of oil (like olive, grapeseed, or canola) and toss the vegetables in the oil right on the pan; this also helps to grease the pan so that the vegetables won't stick. Afterward, generously sprinkle the whole lot with kosher salt and freshly ground pepper (or any seasonings you choose to incorporate), tossing once more to coat. Also, make sure to spread everything out in a single even layer so as to promote even cooking and browning.
  4. Jazz things up (optional): A few sprigs of hearty herbs like thyme or rosemary can be tucked in whole or minced and sprinkled on with the salt and pepper. Alternatively, try adding a drizzle of maple syrup or honey. Just make sure to line the sheet pan with parchment paper so that the sugars won't burn and stick to the pan. To ensure that the sweetener at hand evenly coats the vegetables, toss everything together in a large bowl and then spread out on the pan.
  5. Roast away: This will depend greatly on the density of your vegetable, the size of the pieces, and how hot you choose to heat your oven, but most will be ready to eat in about 20-25 minutes, with tougher varieties like Winter squash requiring up to 40 minutes. When trying out this method, use common sense and check often; the vegetables are done and ready to eat when they're fork-tender and have begun to brown.

This Texas Theater Lets You Catch a Movie With Your Dog, and Welp, Guess I'm Booking a Flight

On Dec. 7, 2018, the world as we know it changed forever with the opening of K9 Cinemas, a movie theater in Plano, TX, that lets you bring your dog and provides you with unlimited. free. wine.

Yes, you read that 100 percent correctly. And yes, I've already booked a one-way ticket to Texas, so I guess I live there now.

K9C's cofounders, Eric Lankford and his dog, Bear, know that nights out are exponentially more fun when your four-legged fur baby is with you, which led to the creation of this glorious theater. Tickets for adults - who can indulge in bottomless wine nights - are $15 (a steal, if you ask me), guests under 21 can get a ticket for $9, and it's only $5 to bring your pup to the show. For $2 each (another steal . . . Texas, man), you can grab yourself a popcorn, box of candy, or soda and treats for your doggo at the concession stand.

K9C sounds like a damn dream, no?

This Surfboard Photo Could Be the Next "The Dress" Debate: Do You See Bumps or Grooves?

When a fellow POPSUGAR employee was texting with a group of his surf buddies about this Craigslist ad for a used surfboard, he mentioned to the group that based on this up-close photo of the board, it must be damaged, because it looks like something had eaten away at the surface. He quickly sparked a debate with his friends, who either saw wax bumps or wax-filled grooves. We brought the debate to the office, and the photo created a divide: team bumps or team grooves. And yes, the great dress color debate of 2015 was brought up.

Keep reading for the hilarious group text convo that started it all plus the explanation straight from the guy who posted the ad!

Women Will Bear the Brunt of the Government Shutdown - Here's Why

This Friday, Jan. 11, should be payday for federal workers - but 800,000 federal workers impacted by Donald Trump's shutdown won't see a paycheck; they'll see their savings dwindle and their families' financial security jeopardized. Many will struggle to pay rent or make mortgage payments, buy food at the grocery store, or afford their medication. All for a totally avoidable and completely pointless shutdown that Donald Trump could end today by giving up on his racist wall and agreeing to the bipartisan legislation that has already passed Congress.

Union workers rally in DC on Jan. 10, 2019.

Women make up the majority of the federal workforce, and in this country, 81 percent of working women live paycheck to paycheck - meaning women are already the hardest hit.

But the shutdown's impact goes beyond pay for federal workers. The one in three American women who experience sexual violence in their lifetimes, the women who rely on government support programs to make ends meet, and the indigenous women who rely on the Indian Health Service will be harmed in the ways they need the most support: health care, food, and housing.

Due to the shutdown, last month Congress failed to reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act, which funds programs that support survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault, including domestic violence shelters and rape crisis centers. While current grants already awarded under the law will not be affected, future grant requests could be delayed, cutting off critical services survivors rely on.

Like most GOP policies, the Trump shutdown impacts women of color, indigenous women, and working class women the most. The Indian Health Service (IHS) - a Department of Health and Human Services program that provides health care to over 1 million American Indian and Alaska Native women - has already stopped receiving federal funding. According to Indian Country Today, 54 percent of the IHS budget goes directly to "tribes, urban programs, and nonprofits for clinics, hospitals, and medical services in Indigenous communities." Healthcare programs for indigenous communities are already severely underfunded, and indigenous women are more likely to be uninsured than any other group. Cutting funding, even temporarily, will severely exacerbate the issue.

And as President Trump digs in his heels and perpetuates this unnecessary government shutdown, more devastating impacts will come within weeks for women and children. Federal funding for food assistance programs Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program For Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) is only guaranteed through February. If the shutdown continues and states can't fill in the gap, 32 million working class women, mothers, and children could lose access to affordable food and formula.

Trump's shutdown also puts millions of working class families on the brink of eviction. In a last-ditch effort to protect public housing and Section 8 tenants, the Department of Housing and Urban Development sent a plea to 1,500 landlords, asking them not to evict people who would no longer receive federal rental assistance due to the shutdown. Women, who are increasingly the sole breadwinners and heads of households, will suffer the most. Seventy-five percent of public housing and Section 8 households are women-headed.

For now, these programs are staying afloat because of state and local sources of funding, but funding varies from state to state and a lengthy federal shutdown would force millions of women to scramble to find housing, food, and health care.

And as Trump's manufactured shutdown over a fake "national security emergency" at the border is punishing working women, let us not forget the immigrant women and children who are being held in federal detention in inhumane conditions, are still being separated from their families, and are being barred from asylum from unimaginable violence and suffering.

Donald Trump and Senate Republicans can and should end all of this today. Because here is the bottom line: women can't afford this shutdown. And women should not have to suffer more for Trump's pursuit of a racist and ineffective policy.

The manufacturing company Kohler is right there with you, it seems, as it showed off a brand-new shiny smart toilet at this week's CES 2019 (Consumer Electronics Show), and it certainly grabbed the attention of the media, who were there reporting on the latest life-changing gadgets and robots. The impressive design is like nothing we've ever seen - it plays music (love it), offers completely customizable ambient lighting (because, let's be honest, the lights in the bathroom always suck), and has a built-in Amazon Alexa. And it's all voice-activated, which is either great or terrible, depending on whether or not you anticipate your kids will mess with it as much as they can. To continue with the luxury amenities, the seat itself is heated, and it opens and closes automatically, so no more fighting with your partner about that. The toilet has a name - Numi 2.0 - and it comes with a steep price point: $7,000.

Jennifer Lopez Holds 1 Person Responsible For Why Her Past Relationships Didn't Work Out

Love may not have cost a thing for Jennifer Lopez, but it hasn't always been easy for her. In the latest issue of Harper's Bazaar, the 49-year-old singer and actress opened up about her previous relationships and the reason they didn't work out. Jennifer - who previously dated celebrities such as Ben Affleck, Marc Anthony, Sean "Diddy" Combs, and Casper Smart - explained that she considers herself the common denominator in why things ended. "For me, the relationship journey has been very up and down. But it didn't have to do with anybody else but me - it was about me figuring out me," she said.

The Second Act star also shared one of the biggest lessons she's learned over the years through dating. "Until you learn to love yourself, you can't completely love [someone else] in a way that is pure and true. Once you do that, you can have relationships that are based on love and respect, that are supportive and nourishing. There's an evolution there that had to happen for me."

Jennifer has been married three times. She wed actor Ojani Noa in 1997 before they split less than a year later. In 2001, she married her backup dancer Cris Judd, which also lasted less than a year, and about two years later, she married singer Marc Anthony. The two welcomed twins Maximilian and Emme in 2008 before divorcing in 2014; however, they still remain amicable.

Although Jennifer has been put through the ringer, she still remains hopeful for the future. "I feel like I'm in a better place now," she told the magazine. She's currently dating former MLB player Alex Rodriguez. "I've got two amazing kids and a great boyfriend. I don't have everything figured out, and everything isn't perfect," she said. "But I feel very proud that with all the things I've gone through in my personal life, I'm still optimistic and hopeful."

Thank the Rom-Com Gods: Noah Centineo and Camila Mendes to Star in Netflix's The Perfect Date

Not only does Noah Centineo seem like he'd be a perfect date IRL, but now he's starring as one in a new Netflix romantic comedy.

On Friday, the streaming giant announced that the To All the Boys I've Loved Before heartthrob will appear in The Perfect Date, a rom-com that will hopefully quench your Peter Kavinsky thirst until the sequel arrives. In the new film, Centineo plays Brooks Rattigan (yes, that's actually his character's name), a high school student trying to raise funds for college. And how does he do so, you might be wondering? "By creating a dating app where he'll 'stand in' for nonexistent boyfriends," Netflix's official logline reads. "But playing a different character every night of the week leads him to question who he really is . . . and who he wants to be with."

The film, which was initially titled The Stand-In, also stars Riverdale's Camila Mendes and Lady Bird's Laura Marano. Judging from the first two stills that have been released so far, Centineo's character will end up in romantic situations with both of them - do we smell another love triangle brewing?!

Until more details and photographic evidence of the Charlie's Angels star continuing to make us melt are shared, check out Netflix's announcement and the first-look images ahead.

Sex Education's Gillian Anderson Reveals Her Most Awkward Sex Story, and It's a Doozy

Friday marks the debut of Netflix's Sex Education, an eight-episode series that follows English teenagers who decide to set up an "underground sex therapy clinic" that provides answers to their peers' weird, wonderful, and necessary questions about sex. Asa Butterfield (Ender's Game) stars as Otis Milburn, a teen who happens to be the only child of two sex therapists, Jean and Remi. X-Files star Gillian Anderson plays Jean, Otis's mother who has absolutely no filter, and lucky for all of us, she recently shared one of her most mortifying sex-related stories with Entertainment Weekly, proving that even Dana Scully isn't impervious to awkward moments.

"I don't remember, from childhood, ever having talked about sex, or about the birds and the bees with my folks. But for some reason, one holiday when my family was in town visiting from the states, and we were in London because I live in London . . . we all, not my kids, but the adults, we all went to go see [Sacha Baron Cohen's Bruno] together," she recalled, laughing. "There was a certain point, sitting next to my dad, that . . . I don't even want to say it out loud. [laughs] There's a medium helping to facilitate a virtual BJ. I think that was the point that we all lifted ourselves out of our seats and left the building."

Oof. Something tells us that anyone who saw the cringe-comedy with their parents can empathize. Fortunately, now that Sex Education - which is perfect for fans of Big Mouth or cult-classic Freaks and Geeks, FYI - is finally streaming on Netflix, you can catch Anderson turning the tables on her onscreen son by facilitating a few awkward moments of her own.

These Kids Gave Prince William a Birthday Card For Kate Middleton, and His Reaction Was the Best

Prince William might have had a solo engagement on Wednesday, but that doesn't mean he forgot about Kate Middleton's birthday! The 36-year-old Duke of Cambridge visited the Royal London Hospital and was honored as the patron of London's Air Ambulance's charity campaign. Kate, instead, stayed behind with their three kids, Prince George, 5, Princess Charlotte, 3, and 8-month-old Prince Louis. During William's visit, a group of kids at the hospital presented the prince with a birthday card for Kate, who turned 37 that same day.

Reporter Rebecca English tweeted a video of the adorable exchange, in which William thanks the children for their birthday wishes. "Well done for remembering," he said. He also assured everyone that he didn't forget the Duchess of Cambridge's special day, adding, "I did remember this morning, so that was OK!" The card's handwritten message read, "Kate I hope you've had the best birthday you could ever imagine."

It sure seems like William and Kate are starting off 2019 on a high note. On Jan. 6, the royal duo made their first outing of the year when they headed to St. Mary Magdalene Church in Sandringham. And if their appearances from 2018 are any indication of what will come this year, we can expect to see William and Kate at several other charity functions, gatherings, and sporting events.

Lady Gaga and Her Mom Have Us Seeing Double at the National Board of Review Gala

Lady Gaga is certainly having her moment this award season, and we're loving every bit of it! After her song "Shallow" took home the Golden Globe for best original song, the 32-year-old singer attended the National Board of Review Gala in NYC on Tuesday night. Gaga was accompanied by her mom, Cynthia Germanotta, and it's clear the apple didn't fall far from the tree. The two celebrated her best actress win for her role in A Star Is Born with costar Bradley Cooper and director Steven Spielberg.

In her speech, Gaga thanked her mom for believing in her so that she could fulfill her dreams. "I always do what I do to make my family proud," she said. She also gave Bradley a sweet shout-out, saying, "I would not be standing up here without you. Thank you for entrusting me to be your first leading actress in your directorial debut."

So, what's up next for Gaga? On Sunday, she's set to attend the Critics' Choice Awards, where A Star Is Born is nominated for nine whopping awards including best picture, best adapted screenplay, and best cinematography. We're wishing Gaga the best of luck!

Bird Box's Writer Is Turning the Shadow and Bone Book Series Into a Show For Netflix

Fans of the Shadow and Bone book series should probably sit down for a second, because we have big news: the story is being adapted for a TV show on Netflix!

The streaming giant has officially greenlighted an eight-episode series based on Leigh Bardugo's bestselling Shadow and Bone and Six of Crows fantasy novels. The project has some exciting names behind it, too, with Eric Heisserer on board, who adapted Netflix's wildly successful Bird Box for the screen, as well as Shawn Levy, executive producer of the network's smash hit Stranger Things, and the Divergent series' Pouya Shahbazian. Heisserer is serving as creator, writer, and executive producer on top of showrunning the series, which will unite characters from both Shadow and Bone and Six of Crows.

Although each of Bardugo's stories are as complex as they are magical, both take place in the "Grishaverse." In the #1 New York Times–bestselling Six of Crows, we meet criminal prodigy Kaz Brekker, who works out of an international trade hub called Ketterdam and is tasked with pulling together an eclectic crew for the heist of a lifetime. Meanwhile, the Shadow and Bone trilogy begins with an orphaned, expendable soldier named Alina Starkov, whose country, Ravka, has been sliced in two by the Shadow Fold, a realm of unnatural darkness teaming with deadly monsters. When her regiment comes under attack, Alina finds herself tapping into a magic she never realized she had, which eventually leads her to the Grisha, her country's magical military elite.

The thugs, thieves, assassins, and saints that occupy the Grishaverse will come together in Shadow and Bone, which will see Alina as the main character. Until we get more details about the Netflix series, you can check out Bardugo's latest entry into the Grishaverse, titled King of Scars, which comes out in late January.

Wondering How to See Every Ending in Black Mirror: Bandersnatch? Use These Flowcharts

Black Mirror: Bandersnatch is as impressive as it is frustrating; though the "choose your own adventure" style of the film is pretty freakin' cool, the amount of FOMO that comes from not being able to see each and every path Stefan can possibly take left me a little piqued. After all, Bandersnatch can run as long as two hours or more since there's reportedly around five hours of footage total. Who has the time?!

Fortunately, fans of the dystopian sci-fi series' latest have figured out a pretty handy way for you to go down paths you might not have known about or realized you should've chosen from the start: flowcharts. A whole lot of gloriously detailed flowcharts.

So, once you get past the "Frosties or Sugar Puffs" conundrum and you start having to choose between chopping up Stefan's dad or burying him in the backyard - a pretty tame choice by Black Mirror standards - things can get confusing. That's where these fan-made flowcharts come in, which can help you unlock endings you might not have realized even exist.

Keep reading to see a few versions of the flowcharts that people have made to help fellow fans navigate Bandersnatch, but be warned: tons of spoilers ahead!

Brie Larson and Alex Greenwald Call Off Engagement After Nearly 3 Years

Brie Larson and Alex Greenwald have reportedly broken up. According to People on Friday, the couple recently chose to end their three-year engagement and five-year relationship. "They have taken a step back from their engagement for the time being, but they remain close," a source says.

Brie and Alex were rumored to have started dating in 2013, though the two kept their relationship relatively private aside from some notable instances. Brie famously gave the 39-year-old lead singer of Phantom Planet a shout-out in her best actress speech at the 2016 Oscars. After winning for her role in Room, she thanked her "real partner, Alex Greenwald. I love you - the whole thing!"

The two got engaged in March 2016, when Alex popped the question to the Captain Marvel star during a romantic trip to Tokyo. Both Brie and Alex have yet to publicly address the status of their relationship.

The Cutest: Jennifer Garner Is All Giggles and Grins When Seeing Her BF John Miller

Despite split rumors late last year, Jennifer Garner and John Miller are still going strong. The Love, Simon star and her tech CEO beau were spotted showing sweet PDA in LA before the new year; Jennifer was all smiles as she wrapped her arms around John and gave him a cute kiss. She also turned things up a notch by playfully sliding her hand across his leg.

In October, it was revealed that Jen had been dating the businessman since the Spring. They were first seen together attending a performance of the musical Dear Evan Hansen at the Ahmanson Theatre in LA in November, after which it was rumored that they were planning a romantic holiday vacation together. John is the first man that Jen has dated publicly since finalizing her divorce from Ben Affleck last year. The couple announced their separation in 2015 and have remained committed to coparenting their three kids.

Look Up "Smitten" in the Dictionary, and You Might See These Snaps of Rami Malek and Lucy Boynton

Now that Rami Malek, 37, and Lucy Boynton, 24, have officially confirmed that they're dating, the two seem to have no problem showing off their romance. Following their adorable date night at the Golden Globes over the weekend, the couple was spotted on a sweet stroll in LA on Tuesday night. The pair looked so happy as Rami wrapped his arm around Lucy and the two shared a few laughs. They even color-coordinated their outfits for the casual outing.

Rami and Lucy recently starred together in Bohemian Rhapsody, and the Freddie Mercury biopic is receiving major praise this award season. In addition to Rami taking home the Golden Globe for best actor in a drama for his role in the movie, the film was also crowned best drama motion picture at the ceremony. Not to mention, Bohemian Rhapsody is up for three awards at Sunday's Critics' Choice Awards. Rami and Lucy certainly have a lot to be excited about right now.

Blown Away by Black Mirror: Bandersnatch? Wait Until You See How They Pulled It Off

By now, chances are you've heard about Black Mirror's new offering: a standalone "choose your own adventure" film called Bandersnatch. Yep, it's exactly what it sounds like: you're not just a passive viewer when it comes to our hero, Stefan. Instead, you must make choices along the way that inevitably affect his fate, as well as the ending you get to witness. The finished product is surely unlike anything ever before seen in the entertainment world, and it's so much more than that, too. It runs smoothly, it's an incredible story, and there are reportedly something to the tune of one trillion different permutations based on the varying choices you can make and paths you can take.

If that all sounds very complicated, it's because it is. To pull off Bandersnatch, Netflix had to develop new tools and programs, and they had to double the budget and the production time that seems to be standard for a Black Mirror episode. (Considering some episodes are feature-length, that's pretty remarkable.) For those of you who like to take things apart and see how they work, we've got a special treat. With help from an in-depth interview from The Hollywood Reporter - it's got tidbits from Netflix execs and Black Mirror creators Charlie Brooker and Annabel Jones - we're breaking down exactly how Bandersnatch came together.

Testing the Format

Netflix initially tested out the interactive technology with their kids' programming, including Puss in Book and Buddy Thunderstruck. "We felt that if it didn't succeed in the kids' space, it wouldn't succeed with grownups," head of product Todd Yellin told Wired in a recent interview. "Kids don't know how something's supposed to be, they just know how it is . . . Not only do they want to get involved with characters, but they want to dive in and be with the characters."

It quickly became clear that the format was a huge success, with high interaction rates from the kids who watched. Once Netflix had a "proof of concept," so to speak, they took the idea to Brooker and Jones. Funnily enough, the two weren't keen on trying it out. "We did pretty much walk out of the room and go, 'Nope,'" Brooker told THR. "But partly because, at that point, we didn't know what the story would be and thought, 'Wouldn't that just be a gimmick?' Annoyingly, several weeks later, we were throwing story ideas around and this idea popped up that would only work as an interactive. It was good to come back and have an idea, but also daunting." And with that, it was pretty much all systems go. Still, it would be more than a year and a half before they could execute the project and slate it for release.

Plotting the Idea

According to Wired, Brooker started immediately to puzzle out the plot, sketching out a rough flowchart on a white board. The story and its many paths got so complicated that Brooker had to learn a unique videogame programming language, specifically used for a program called Twine. "Every time I had an idea I put it in a box, and you can move them around. It's a bit like making a giant patchwork quilt," he said. But even that medium wasn't enough to contain the vast complexities of Bandersnatch. "The story was expanding, and it was like whole new islands started appearing. It grew down beyond the flowchart, and sometimes the story would expand sideways. And then there were layers," Brooker told THR. So, get this: Netflix literally developed an internal tool to help plot the story.

The tool is called Branch Manager, and it allowed Brooker to send his evolving script directly to Netflix as he worked. What it amounts to, from the sound of it, is a vast map delineates all the potential options and paths, complete with plenty of if-then scenarios. The map also shows how the viewer can arrive at each ending. The complex narrative structures in Branch Manager even allow for loops and do-overs.

Making It Happen

Once they mapped out everything, clearly an endeavor in and of itself, then it was time to make the damn thing. According to reports, Bandersnatch took twice as long and cost twice as much to produce. For instance, Metalhead (which pops up as an Easter egg in Bandersnatch) took 12 days to shoot. Bandersnatch took 35 days, spread over the course of seven weeks. According to THR, there are upwards of 250 video segments that piece together to make the whole. That's a lot of small scenes to film. Brooker himself told THR it felt like he was making four Black Mirror episodes at once!

In addition to all the legwork on the creative side, Netflix had their own work to do. Wondering how this could possibly amount to more than a trillion iterations? Well, a new piece of technology allowed for "state tracking" during playback. This means your experience is unique to you: Netflix "remembers" every single choice you make during your viewing, and the story shifts slightly based on what you pick. It's ever-evolving, and it means your entire experience would change even if you only made one alternate choice.

The choose-your-own-adventure model also meant Netflix had to beef up their cache system in order to keep things running smoothly. Normally, a program will load scenes in advance so you don't have to worry about buffering at any point. But when the software isn't sure what you're going to pick, it's hard to load scenes in advance. As such, the platform will prep and load a few videos at a time - the relevant ones, of course - to keep things moving. I'm dizzy just thinking about it.

The Launch

Now that Bandersnatch is here, those involved can kick back and behold their brilliance. But Bandersnatch is not just the gimmick Brooker first worried about, and it's not just a feat of technology. Black Mirror turned out to be the perfect venue for the format, with a stylized and meta story about a video game programmer working on the very sort of thing he's falling victim to.

The result is a unique kind of viewing experience, one where you're party to whatever Stefan inevitably endures. "You are making a decision at that point about your protagonist and what they have to do," Jones told THR. "If it wasn't interactive, you'd just watch and probably be appalled and worried and frightened for him in that moment. If you're making that decision, how does that affect your relationship with the film? Do you then feel more wretched?" Guess you better watch it for yourself to find out.

Hate Deciding Stefan's Fate in Bandersnatch? Charlie Brooker Has a Message For You: "F*ck Off"

The great thing about watching a movie or TV show that you don't enjoy is that you can turn it off. Truly, people, it's that easy. Nevertheless, that hasn't stopped audiences from complaining about all the decisions they have to make while watching Black Mirror's latest trippy creation, Bandersnatch.

The stand-alone film is done in a "choose your own adventure" style, meaning as the plot moves along, viewers use their remotes to make A or B decisions for the story's ill-fated hero, Stefan, that range from the seemingly banal ("Sugar Puffs or Frosties?") to the gruesome ("Bury your dad's body or chop it up?"). The setup and technology used to achieve such a seamless experience is incredibly impressive, but apparently the stress of discovering all the endings and secret pathways that Stefan has the potential to journey down is just too much for some. While speaking to HuffPost UK about the critiques, Black Mirror cocreators Charlie Brooker and Annabel Jones acknowledged that the film might not be for everyone.

"It's been interesting that you get different reactions from different people, partly based on what they're expecting, or what they want," Brooker said of fans' response to the interactive film. "So some people go, 'oh, I'm sh*t at this', and you sort of go, 'no no, it's alright, we've built in that you're going to fail'. We're trying to make you fail a couple of times so that you have to go around and do things again, and that's sort of baked into the story."

As for audiences who don't want to deal with the decision-making process whatsoever? "Well f*ck off, then. Do something else!" Brooker said. "And then there's some people who think 'oh, it's too simple as a game' or 'games have done this before' - well this isn't on a gaming platform, it's on Netflix. I'm well aware of what a computer game is, thanks."

Luckily, whether you liked Bandersnatch or not, season five of Black Mirror is on the way, likely arriving on Netflix within the next few months (it was delayed because Bandersnatch took so long to make). Miley Cyrus, we're ready for you.
