You Know What Sparks Joy in Me? Not Doing Marie Kondo's Folding Method
I'm currently watching Marie Kondo's show on Netflix, Tidying Up, and I'm just as obsessed as everyone else. So many of the organizational guru's ideas to declutter your life are inspirational. I mean, who isn't prompted to clean out a few drawers after watching just five minutes of an episode? I also adore the idea that you shouldn't have anything in your life that doesn't spark joy (something that was hard but necessary to apply to my old, low-rise jeans).
Does anyone actually have time to fold clothes so flawlessly every time they do the laundry? Anyone?
But as much as I love Kondo and think she's the cutest, most positive, and most aspirational person ever, that laundry folding method she demonstrates on the show goes in the pile of stuff that doesn't serve me, right along with a half-broken apple slicer and an ill-fitting old bra. As I watched Kondo meticulously fold shirts and pants along imaginary lines only she can see, then arrange each item in a perfect little stack, I couldn't help but laugh. With four kids, I'm lucky to get through a load of laundry a day, let alone fold every article of clothing like it's going on display at The Gap.
Watching Kondo, who is a mother of two herself, fold everything into perfect little rectangles brought on copious amounts of stress . . . all while a daunting pile of laundry sat beside me and four kids yelled for my attention. I immediately felt like the expectation to KonMari my family's clothes - which is what Kondo's method of tidying is called - placed way too much pressure on me and parents in general. I mean, we already deal with too much! Sure, it's awesome to open a drawer and be able to see everything that's in there, but does anyone actually have time to fold clothes so flawlessly every time they do the laundry? Anyone? If I had that kind of time, it wouldn't have taken me three days to get through just one episode of Tidying Up. And if I did manage to fold everything just once, will those clothes stay like that after one morning dash to get out the door and get to school on time? Definitely not in my house.
As much as I would love to, I can't and won't make my family's dresser drawers photo-worthy every day. If I expect this of myself, I'll feel like I'm failing when it doesn't happen. And trust me, I already feel like I'm failing most of the time. Grocery shopping - because I've fixed microwave pizza for dinner three night in a row - has to trump rectangular clothing mastery. And my kids finishing their homework - because I've asked them numerous times to please get it done - takes precedence over me teaching them how to KonMari their unicorn pajamas.
So, Marie, while I love you and your wonderful ideas, I have to say that that's all they're going to be for me - ideas. At least right now. I've learned that one of the most satisfying feelings in my house is getting my kids to just put their clothes in their drawers after I've washed them. And if I want to see everything that's in my baby's drawer, I'll stick to just rummaging through it until I find what I'm looking for. It may not spark joy, but it's definitely less stressful than folding everything perfectly every time, and that's good enough for me.
You'll Want to Put This Video of a Baby Hearing Her Sister's Voice For the First Time on Repeat
Carol Dianne Benjamin, a mom of two from Madison, GA, has always wanted the best for her daughter Scarlet. But after she was born premature, Carol knew that the road to recovery following a few complications was going to be long for her little girl. However, at 11 months old, Scarlet's life changed forever when she got her very first hearing aids, and her reaction to her big sister's voice is absolutely everything. Carol shared the touching video to Facebook on Jan. 10, and it's since gone utterly viral.
"As everyone knows, when Scarlet was born she was three months early," Carol captioned the clip. "She ended up getting [necrotizing enterocolitis (NES)], a certain stomach infection, and the antibiotics that she needed cause hearing loss."
Although Scarlet had a rough go early on, her mom thought she could hear fairly well. It wasn't until Scarlet got her hearing aids that Carol realized that wasn't the case. "It has been a LONG and emotional experience," Carol confessed. "She reacted to most sounds so we thought she could hear fairly well. After what I witnessed today, it was not as well as I thought. Hearing aids make a WORLD of difference!"
So far, the sweet video has been viewed 161,000 times and has racked up more than 1,000 reactions on Facebook. And it's easy to see why: Scarlet's baby giggles will warm your heart right up!

Netflix's You Is Definitely Not For Kids - Here's What to Know If Your Teen Is Asking to Watch
If you've avoided the internet's collective obsession over one of the latest shows added to Netflix - You, starring Penn Badgley of Gossip Girl as Joe, a psycho stalker - you're actually missing out. The creepily addictive thriller, which first aired on Lifetime but is getting a second season thanks to Netflix, is dark, twisted, and gripping . . . but it's definitely not one for kids to get engrossed in.
The show begins with a woman named Beck (Elizabeth Lail) who walks into the bookstore Joe works in. As soon as we see her, we hear Joe's immediately obsessive inner commentary of her, and so the story of him stalking her and eventually dating her unfolds - but it's not without its obstacles. Joe goes to incredible lengths to make sure no one dates Beck but him, which includes - but is not limited to - murdering anyone who gets in his way.
If your teen has been expressing interest in watching the popular show or you have a feeling this might be the kind of series they'd click on if it came up on their Netflix homepage (which is exactly what happened to me, and once I hit "play," there was no looking back), there are a few things you should be aware of first. You know your teen best, but You is a heavy show with a lot going on, so read ahead to know what your teen is getting into before they start (and get hooked on) the series.
Warning: plenty of panic-inducing spoilers for You lie ahead.
The 28 Days of Romance and Sex Challenge For Moms and Dads
For some, romance and sex may be just "metaphorical concepts" when you've got little children running amok in your house, but intimacy shouldn't be nonexistent. In fact, if you let your sex life die with your partner, your relationship will suffer down the line. And really, is it even possible to make a whole relationship sweet (romance) and spicy (sex) in just one day, aka Valentine's Day? Not really. That's a huge task for one "24-hour" period of time. It's best to take things slow (it's more fun that way!) and do little things every day to bring back that just-started-dating excitement.
Between wiping your kids' mouths and butts and making never-ending to-do lists, step away from parent duty for a minute and take our 28-day romance and sex challenge. It's full of simple yet fun things you can do in the month of February to spice up life with your significant other. While some things may push you way out of your comfort zone, don't rule them out and try to give everything a chance. Get ready to play!
I Ate Only Instant Pot Meals For a Week - Here's What I Learned
As a person who loves to cook but doesn't have unlimited money to spend on ingredients or hours to dedicate to creating a three-course meal every night, my Instant Pot is my go-to kitchen appliance. It's perfect for people who don't typically meal plan for the entire week because you can cook a hearty meal - like beef stew, for example - in an hour, compared to eight in a traditional Crock-Pot.
In an effort to get a little more organized and stick to a budget in 2019, I decided to fully test my Instant Pot loyalty by only eating meals I made in it for an entire week. While there were definitely some bright spots in my little experiment, like everything tasting amazing, I also met a few challenges along the way. Read through to see what I've learned by going full-on Instant Pot for a week.
Kim Kardashian Just Confirmed She and Kanye West Are Expecting Their Fourth Child
Kim Kardashian just confirmed that she and Kanye West are expecting their fourth child via surrogate. On Jan. 14, Kim shared the happy news with Watch What Happens Live host Andy Cohen during his Bravo show. The soon-to-be family of six are expecting the baby early May, confirms Us Weekly. It was revealed back in August that the couple still had one embryo left, now confirmed to be a male.
The couple welcomed 11-month-old Chicago via a gestational carrier after Kim experienced a "disgusting" and "traumatic" birth with her first two children.
The Wests are already busy looking after North, Saint, and Chicago, and with another baby on the way, we're sure they'll have a busy Summer ahead of them. Congratulations to the couple!
Heather Martin Is Way More Than Just The Bachelor's "Never Been Kissed" Girl
Much has been made of Colton's virginity on this season of The Bachelor, but he's not the only one with a limited sexual past. Heather told Colton that she's never kissed anyone before, and he, well, could relate.
Even though Heather was nervous on the second episode of the season to tell Colton she'd never smooched anyone, she wasn't exactly hiding it on the show. Her official Bachelor contestant bio lists her job as "Never Been Kissed." In reality, though, Heather is gainfully employed - in an Instagram post about the show, she added the hashtag #ihaveajob, just so everyone was on the same page.
In fact, according to Heather's LinkedIn profile, she's an assistant program manager at a company called Aethercomm. The California-based company makes products to be used in combat, according to its own LinkedIn page. Impressive and so much more than that show tagline gave away.
So what else don't we know about Heather? Here are a few things we've learned about the sweet Bachelor contestant so far.
Hannah B. and Caelynn Didn't Get Along Way Before The Bachelor - Here's Why
The only thing more dramatic than drama on The Bachelor is previous drama that carried over to become drama on The Bachelor. Still with us? Two contestants after Colton Underwood's heart knew each other before the show, and let's just say they didn't start filming on good terms.
Hannah Brown and Caelynn Miller-Keyes, aka Miss Alabama USA 2018 and Miss North Carolina USA 2018, respectively, competed for the title of Miss USA 2018. Not only that, but the two were roommates during the competition. During the second episode of season 23, both women separately commented on the tension that started at the pageant and carried over to the show.
"Hannah. B and I know each other, and we're not necessarily the best of friends," Caelynn said. "We competed at Miss USA together. She's Miss Alabama, and I'm Miss North Carolina. We were roommates at Miss USA. We were super close, and then she was not happy that I was first runner-up. She was mad she didn't place. For sure, there were a lot of hurt feelings. With Hannah, there's a facade, and then it starts to crumble. Hannah kind of snapped. She flipped a switch, and I was like, 'Wow, this is a whole new Hannah.' So being in this environment, it's pretty similar." Caelynn thinks that switch will be flipped again on the show and that it will happen pretty quickly.
Hannah B. also had some choice words about Caelynn, saying: "I'm not happy that Caelynn's getting time with Colton. If I start thinking about it, I'll turn into a crazy woman. I think I definitely have more insight to, like, what type of person she is. Like, she's fake." Yikes! If only that room they shared could talk.
"It's just so funny because there's not one person in the world that I have a problem with, except her," Hannah B. said to Hannah Godwin about Caelynn. "It totally scares me for Colton."
While we don't know the full story yet about what happened during the big pageant, the ladies must know each other pretty well from sharing a room.
"My relationship with Colton was solidified last night that there is definitely something there," Hannah B. said. "But now, I'm really scared that she's gonna say something to him to really screw it up."
There's still some social media evidence of the contestants' friendship on Instagram, but the last photo of just the two of them was posted by Hannah B. in February 2018. Keep reading to see pictures of the pageant beauties from, uh, better times.
Laura Dern Had a Jurassic Park Reunion at the Critics' Choice, Because Life, Uh, Finds a Way
Jurassic Park was "alive" at the 2019 Critics' Choice Awards. That's according to Laura Dern, who shared a sweet reunion and stopped to take a selfie with Joe Mazzello at the event. Though it might be hard to tell because he's a full adult now - time flies, huh? - Mazzello portrayed Tim Murphy, grandson to Jurassic Park's kooky creator, in the beloved '90s film. The actor would go on to appear in the sequel, while Dern had a brief appearance in the third installment. Mazzello shared the same selfie on his Instagram, and described it as the highlight of his night.
Dern was at the award show because she was nominated for best actress in a movie made for TV or limited series for her role in The Tale. Mazzello, meanwhile, was in attendance with the Bohemian Rhapsody cast, as he portrayed Queen bassist John Deacon in the film. To quote Dr. Ian Malcolm: life, uh, found a way to bring these two together.
Ray Romano and Mark Duplass Form an Unlikely Friendship in Netflix's Paddleton
In between all the big-budget sci-fi thrillers on Netflix's roster, like Bird Box and IO, is Mark Duplass's quiet Sundance drama about two misfit neighbors who end up forming an unlikely, but nevertheless heartwarming, bond.
The film, Paddleton, sees Ray Romano and writer-director Mark Duplass playing said neighbors, who find themselves leaning on each other when the younger of the two, Michael (Duplass), is diagnosed with terminal cancer. Because of the brutal chemo process, Michael decides he's going to end things on his own terms, enlisting the help of his best friend, played by Romano, to join him on a road trip to procure medication that will . . . well, you know.
Mixed into the conversations about life, death, and everything in between is plenty of footage of the pair playing a game called "paddleton," which apparently involves tennis rackets, a giant trash can, and a big wall (kind of like racquetball, I guess? Only not). There's also a stop at an ostrich farm, hot tub antics, and talk of making pizzas, if you're into that sort of thing.
Watch the trailer above before Paddleton launches globally on Netflix on Feb. 22.
Bohemian Rhapsody's Award Season Buzz Isn't Just Disappointing - It's Dangerous
Drawn to Freddie Mercury's unparalleled voice and flamboyance, drawn to the song lyrics that have proved themselves indelible in our collective memory, like so many, I grew up idolizing the Queen frontman. This was before I knew about his sexuality - or even my own - but in many ways, it wasn't a secret. His performance of gender and masculinity was coded in queerness, nuances during the '70s and '80s that now, in hindsight, seem to scream with clarity.
At that time, Freddie Mercury wasn't able to be publicly out and have the career that he did. That's what makes the recent Queen biopic, Bohemian Rhapsody, a movie just as scared of his sexuality, so distressing. As the film, which won the Golden Globe for best motion picture drama and best actor for lead Rami Malek, continues to receive accolades, Hollywood is signaling that this is the gold standard for queer storytelling.
On paper, the movie is a success: it's become the highest grossing LGBTQ+ film of all time. Hollywood replicates that which has a proven track record, so we're sure to see these same tropes play out on screen in the future.
For the greater part of our history, queer people were forced to identify each other through furtive glances and coded language; these were survival tactics. If we acknowledged ourselves directly with words or actions, we were opening ourselves up to danger. We see Mercury, played by Malek in the film, making suggestive eyes with a man, a stranger. The implication is that he'll follow him into a public bathroom for a hookup, though before we find out what happens, the camera cuts to a new scene. Much later, he's shown in a gay bar, surrounded by men in leather, though not engaging with anyone onscreen. In contrast, a different scene reveals Mercury approaching a woman at a concert. This is Mary Austin, his lifelong friend and confidant. They flirt, and Mercury later shows up at the shop where she works to ask her out. Later, they're laying on a couch, partially clothed, and Freddie proposes to her. It's a moment of intimacy, the type you go to a loud biopic about a famous rock star to see. But in the context of Bohemian Rhapsody, the lesson is that relationships with women are virtuous and are something to pursue, while relationships with men are something to hide.
This is, without a doubt, something that Mercury himself would have known during his life - it guided a great number of the things he did - but the movie fails by solely presenting the Freddie Mercury that was crafted and presented for public consumption, not the private Freddie Mercury who existed beyond closed bathroom doors.
Brian May and Roger Taylor, two remaining members of Queen that served as creative and musical consultants on the film, are complicit in this sanitized version of Freddie Mercury. This Mercury has been chewed on and softened to appeal to a wide audience, spit back up into something deemed palatable. It isn't May and Taylor's mission to let you into a new truth about this legendary singer; it's about preserving the legacy of Freddie Mercury and Queen. That means dropping the things that don't fit into a happy, crowd-pleasing narrative: Freddie's self-described passion for cocaine, polyamorous relationships, and a sex life that included romantic partners, casual partners, and sex workers.
"To me, dullness is a disease. I need danger and excitement."
Mercury had an enormous sex drive. This was asserted many times throughout his life, and it's an important point lost in the movie. He was a man of excess, one of his defining characteristics, and that included sex. Speaking to the journalist Rick Sky, who interviewed Mercury numerous times over the years, he said, "To me, dullness is a disease. I need danger and excitement. I was not made for staying indoors and watching television. I am definitely a sexual person. I used to say that I would go with anyone, but I have become more choosy. I love to surround myself with strange and interesting people, because they make me feel more alive. Straight people bore me stiff. I love freaky people."
This side of him is certainly portrayed in the movie, but it's never a cause for happiness. To be queer is to know torment, never joy.
Bohemian Rhapsody keeps Mercury in the closet, showing only rare, positive glimpses of his queer life (relating to sex and otherwise), and in doing so, the movie paints his queerness as his undoing. Contrary to what the movie shows, Mercury never came out to his parents. He never made an official confession to the other members of Queen about his HIV status. He very deliberately kept the queer parts of his life separate, so despite having members of Queen consult on the film, the movie results to simply presenting the most stereotypical aspects of queer life, and it does so by coating them in shame. Mercury's undoing, in reality, is spurred not by his queerness but by living in a judgmental, intolerant world that required him to hide his identity.
The film does further damage by depicting Paul Prenter, Mercury's friend, and for a time his manager, as the film's villain, complicit in Mercury's downfall. Prenter pulls Mercury away from the band, pushing him toward a solo record deal by way of lies and deception. He plies him with drugs and alcohol. He also drives a wedge between Mercury and Austin, his rock. It's in these moments, when Prenter is guiding Mercury toward the queerest point of the film, that his life spirals downward. Despite the booze, the drugs, and the casual sex, Mercury is presented to the audience with dead eyes. This queer new world is a soulless one.
The character of Paul Prenter falls into a long history of queer (and queer-coded) villains in cinema. Queer characters have been so infrequently represented that it is in these villains that many LGBTQ+ people saw the first glimpses of themselves onscreen: the murderous cannibal, Dr. Frank-N-Furter of The Rocky Horror Picture Show; the exuberant yet mincing Jafar from Aladdin; and Jame Gumb (aka Buffalo Bill), the serial killer in The Silence of the Lambs. With Prenter operating at the height of his villainy, Mercury contracts AIDS and it is in relation to AIDS that the film feels most comfortable fully exploring his sexuality.
When Rami Malek told Into in October that Mercury never thought of himself as a queer icon, that he never wanted to be "boxed into anything," it presupposes that he had any other choice. Mercury couldn't be open about who and how he loved during his life, and it's a shame that with all the progress we've made since his death, this movie, which will be seen as a definitive testimony of his life, is only half the story.
Excuse Us, but We're So Impressed by This Bachelor Contestant's Makeup Skills
On The Bachelor's first group date this season, Elyse Dehlbom won over fans (and Colton!) by sharing a story about her age. Colton gave her the group date rose, so why is Elyse saying she "can't accept a proposal" in the previews for future Bachelor episodes?
At the time of season 23's filming, Elyse was 31, putting her on the older end of the contestants' age spectrum. So when the ladies were asked to describe a "first" on their group date, she used her age to her advantage, admitting that The Bachelor marked the first time she was dating a younger man. (Colton is 26 during this season.) Colton was so impressed with her honesty and willingness to address her age head-on that he decided to keep her on for another week.
It seems like Colton is pretty intrigued by Elyse, or at least he was at first. So it's a bit baffling to see she will be having second thoughts in the trailer for the show's upcoming episodes. Then again, a lot can change in a short amount of time on The Bachelor.
Whatever's in store for Elyse and Colton's future, though, Elyse seems like a really unique person, and she's got a lot going for her. Here are a few things fans should know about the Arizona-based makeup artist.
The Bachelor: Here Are the Women Who Colton Has Already Eliminated
Are you ready for a whole lot of Colton? Because the 23rd season of The Bachelor officially kicked off on Monday night, and the former NFL player has taken his first steps toward finding true love. The man of the hour, who was dumped by Becca Kufrin in the last season of The Bachelorette and also linked up with on-again, off-again flame Tia Booth on Bachelor in Paradise, is searching for love again, and he certainly has some interesting women trying to woo him.
But sadly - for the ladies, anyway - not everyone has made it through with a rose. In fact, the first batch of contestants has already been sent packing without roses. Check out the status of all the women on the show ahead, and keep checking back each week to see who is still in the running for Colton's heart!
7 Things to Know About The Bachelor's Troublemaker, Demi Burnett
She's from Texas, so you might say it's no surprise Demi Burnett is all about going big or going home. The bold blonde may be ruffling a few feathers at the Bachelor mansion in Los Angeles - hmm, kissing Colton in front of other girls during a group date and showing up in a robe to give the Bachelor a private massage? - but according to her social media, she's a down-home country girl at heart. Her official bio says the 23-year-old hails from a town called Red Oak in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, where she loves fishing and riding an ATV, and she is a huge Game of Thrones fan.
But there's more to know about this aspiring Victoria's Secret Angel (no, really - her bucket list item is to be the first petite VS Angel, according to ABC). Here are some things we learned scrolling through her Instagram feed. Spoiler alert, Colton: she's pretty darn cool and totally hilarious (her Instagram handle is @demi_not_lovato).
6 Otherworldly New Tidbits About Men in Black International, Straight From the Stars
Anticipation is building for the all-new Men In Black International, which already boasts an incredible cast and a jam-packed first trailer. Now, thanks to Entertainment Weekly we're getting even more exciting tidbits about the film, which is kind of a sequel and a reboot all rolled into one. "[It's] a sort of reinvention, an opening up of the original franchise that aesthetically is a lot different," star Chris Hemsworth said in the cover story. "Like the geography of this one, we're not just in New York - we're in Istanbul, Italy, London."
So, what else have we learned from this piece? As it turns out, it's a mini treasure trove of hints as to what we can expect when the film hits theaters on June 14. Buried in the text are little factoids about the alien critters we'll be meeting, a new cast member, and some hilarious quotes about Hemsworth's difficulty breaking out of his superhuman Thor mindset for the film's stunts. Let's break down the coolest new things that we've learned.
- The film will attempt to capture a different era. Production designer Charles Wood noted that the original films alluded strongly to a 1960s vibe, but this time around it's different. "We're actually taking it back in time and saying that International exists in many cities around the world, and maybe even started a century ago."
- Tessa Thompson is having a BLAST as the first "Woman in Black." "I think you do have the chance inside all of this escapism to say something, and make a movie that has heart and that has satire and that holds up a mirror to our stuff," she told EW. "I think that's possible, without preaching."
- Chris Hemsworth was kind of stuck in Thor mode. "Thor's stunts are wildly complicated, but it feels like an atomic bomb goes off with each of those [hammer] hits. Everything is sort of magnified to a level that is so nonhuman. Whereas this, we have to keep grounding it," Hemsworth revealed in the story. "There's always a part of it where I'm like, 'Can I do a flip or just sort of leap from this building to that one?' and they're like, 'Nah, humans don't do that sort of thing,'" he said with a laugh. "So they have to rein me in occasionally."
- Rebecca Ferguson is in the film as a "seductive alien" named Riza. Ferguson has quite the impressive resumé, but is perhaps best known for her role in The Greatest Showman. This role is really outside her box. Her character reportedly has "Saturn-ringed hair and third arm," and "would look right at home in Beetlejuice's waiting room."
- Kumail Nanjiani's "new alien sidekick" character, Pawny, comes with his own baggage. "He's the last survivor of an alien race that had been hiding out on Earth disguised as a chess set," Nanjiani revealed, "and he has some major self-esteem issues."
- The "Les Twins," Laurent and Larry Bourgeois, contributed with some wildly acrobatic fight scenes. "The twins are out-of-this-world incredible, amazing," Hemsworth gushed. "It's like some sort of high-speed, very postproduction altered state." One scene, set on a busy London street, reportedly required wirework because of its complexity and supernatural demands.
How Do You Get on The Bachelor or Bachelorette? Follow These Steps
Admit it. At one time or another, you've thought about what it would be like to go on one of the shows we love to hate and hate to love - The Bachelor and The Bachelorette. After all, most of us want to find that forever partner (and ride off into the sunset, preferably in a helicopter overlooking a tropical island). But what does it really take to get from just a thought to actually appearing on the hit ABC show? Here's everything you need to know.
Make Sure You Meet the Eligibility Requirements
First off, anyone related or closely connected to employees of the show aren't allowed to apply to be the Bachelor or Bachelorette, or a contestant pining to be with one of them. You also can't currently be a candidate in any type of political office or become one from when you submit your application to one year after the first broadcast of the last episode. All applicants must be single, at least 21 years old, and a US citizen or resident or foreign alien without restrictions on coming in or out of the country. Make sure you also have a passport (hello, exotic trips!) and are clean of a felony conviction, misdemeanor conviction, or restraining order. Oh, and make sure you realize that you will be on television and your life will basically be an open book. Ready for the next step?
Send in an Application, Pictures, and Video
It's time to shine! You can submit an application through mail or online, and you can even submit one for someone else. Be prepared, because it's probably more in-depth than any application you're used to. It'll ask about your salary, if you've ever filed for bankruptcy, how your previous relationships ended, etc. You can also attach your social media accounts (so finally all those cute pictures you took at brunch have a real purpose).
Pictures are a must and a video is encouraged so you can show off your personality. They have seven suggested questions to answer in the video (from your ideal fantasy date to any special talents). However, they want you to have fun and be creative, so really get into it!
Attend a Casting Call
If you get this far (woo!), you'll probably be asked to come to a nearby major city for a casting call so the producers can get to know you in person. Depending on what happens there, you'll either move forward in the process as the casting directions narrow down the group or not be seen as a fit.
Good luck and cheers to many roses, one-on-one time, and an unbelievable journey.
Samuel L. Jackson Teases a Pretty Major Nick Fury Reveal in Captain Marvel
The buzz is building as we close in on Marvel's next big release. Captain Marvel will be a major benchmark for the cinematic universe, and it just so happens that it's the final film before we witness the harrowing glory of Avengers: Endgame. Speaking of Avengers, we should have known the one and only Nick Fury would pop up in Captain Marvel. After all, he's the one who pages Captain Marvel in the postcredits scene for Avengers: Infinity War, signifying that he and this mysterious new hero have a history. The real question is, what kind of role will Fury play in the film?
Over the Summer, POPSUGAR visited the Captain Marvel set, where we got to sit down for an interview with Samuel L. Jackson, the man behind the eye patch. After the first question ("Tell us about Nick Fury in this film"), he said, "No! Trying to get me fired. I don't even know how this works. What am I allowed to say?" Don't worry, though, he eventually opened up and gave us a few juicy details about what we can expect.
As it turns out, we're going to encounter quite the different Fury this time around. The film takes place in 1995, a solid 15 years before his first appearance in Iron Man. That means, behind the scenes, Jackson undergoes a pretty incredible digital de-aging process. And as for Fury himself? Jackson told us Nick has been "riding the desk at SHIELD" when we meet him in Captain Marvel, which sounds like he's been stuck with lame grunt work.
But the real interesting aspect of his character is that he's not going to be quite as, well, gruff as he is later on. "[He's] not as cynical just yet. Things are changing, the world is changing for him, how he views it in terms of who we are in respect to the rest of the galaxy," he said.
Then Jackson revealed something even more exciting: there's a strong chance we're going to see why Fury wears an eye patch at all times. "I guess you'll see the origin of what happened to his eye. Possibly," he said with a coy grin. "You'll find out that he does have family that's referenced in another way. There are things we talk about, there's back story we haven't talked about before, where he's from, what he's done. There's an element, there are times when he actually humanly reacts to things with fear and awe, instead of the stone face that he normally has."
Sounds like Fury might have some pretty intense encounters this time around, no? As a final note, one journalist asked Jackson if he learned any new facts about the character while he was working on this film. "That everybody calls him Fury," he said. "Even his mother." To use a phrase that Jackson himself might have used at some point or might still use in the future, he sounds like one badass motherf*cker.
Who Is Hannah B. From The Bachelor? Here's What to Know About Miss Alabama
This year's group of contestants on The Bachelor includes not one, but two pageant gals. There's Caelynn, who holds the Miss North Carolina title, and Hannah Brown, who is Miss Alabama USA 2018. And based on Hannah B.'s Bachelor bio, she's super proud of her home state.
Hannah attended the University of Alabama, where she earned a degree in communications, according to ABC. She's born and raised in the Southern state, and she has an accent to match, too. If Colton's into Bri's fake Australian accent, maybe he'll also be drawn to Hannah's Southern drawl?
Confusingly, this season's other Hannah, Hannah G., is also from Alabama. Still, it seems fair for Hannah B. to claim the "Alabama Hannah" nickname, considering she's Miss Alabama USA herself. Here's what fans should know about the Bachelor hopeful.
Tessa Thompson and Lily James Play Sisters on the Edge in the Little Woods Trailer
Tessa Thompson ditches her Men in Black suit and Lily James parts with her Mamma Mia 2 overalls in the trailer for Little Woods, which looks like a dark, captivating drama from award-winning director Nia DaCosta.
The pair play estranged sisters living in a run-down North Dakota town who come crashing back into each other's lives at the most inopportune time. Ollie (Thompson) is just trying to make it a few more days until her probation is over, after she was caught running illegal drugs over the Canadian border, but when her mother dies, she has to come to the aid of Deb (James), her half-sister who's dealing with an unplanned pregnancy and a dangerous ex.
Making matters more complicated is the bank's order that they have one week to settle the mortgage on their mother's house before it's foreclosed. Ollie contemplates selling drugs again to make ends meet, while Deb finds herself considering going to extremes to rid herself of her unborn baby.
The film also stars Luke Kirby, James Badge Dale, and Lance Reddick and arrives in theaters on April 19. Watch the trailer above!
Outlander: Nervous About Roger and Brianna's Fate? Here's What Happens to Them in the Books
Non-book readers may be wondering just what is to become of Roger (Richard Rankin) and Brianna (Sophie Skelton) on Outlander this season and into the future. The pair have had quite the tumultuous relationship so far, between the time travel, Brianna's rape, the kidnapping, and Roger being kind of a jerk on several occasions. Read on to find out what's in store for the star-crossed lovers, but be warned: spoilers from the books to follow!
Thus far on Outlander, Roger and Bree haven't had too many happy moments together. They begin a relationship, only to have Roger freak out that Brianna wants to sleep with him - in his mind, they must be at least engaged first, though he has slept with other women already, so that's a touch hypocritical on his part. Then, when Brianna discovers that her parents soon perish in a fire back in the 1770s, she abruptly travels through time to find them and warn them, leaving Roger with nothing more than a letter that he isn't even supposed to receive for a year. That is not exactly the most loving gesture, either.
But Roger loves Bree so much that he follows her through time and across an ocean, where they conduct a layperson's marriage commitment and consummate their relationship, only to then have a huge fight because Roger knew about Claire (Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie's (Sam Heughan) deaths in the fire and didn't tell Bree, completely taking away her agency in making the decision about warning them.
When he storms off, Bree is then raped by the villainous pirate Stephen Bonnet (Ed Speleers), and when she realizes she is pregnant, she doesn't know if the baby is Roger's or Bonnet's. There is a giant misunderstanding about the rape, so when Roger comes looking for Bree (again), Jamie beats him senseless, and Ian (John Bell) sells Roger to a Mohawk tribe that is traveling through the area.
So, non-book readers certainly cannot be blamed if they think perhaps Roger and Bree should just throw in the towel because their relationship has been a total train wreck so far. In fact, many book readers probably felt that way when they read Diana Gabaldon's story.
Fortunately - or unfortunately, depending on how you feel about Bree and Roger - the calamitous couple is going to find each other again and all will be well . . . more or less.
Currently on the show, Jamie and Claire are off on a rescue mission to bring Roger back to Brianna, who is cooling her heels at River Run as she grows ever more pregnant. They are successful in their mission, but initially, Roger doesn't want to return to Bree. In what is another upstanding choice on Roger's part, he isn't sure if he can raise another man's baby, despite the fact that it's not like Bree went out and took a new lover - she was raped. In the book, Roger takes more than a month to make up his mind. We don't yet know if the show will go the same route; Roger could do with a little image rehabbing, so perhaps they won't let that choice linger for quite so long.
Either way, he eventually returns to Brianna and pledges his loyalty to her and their son, Jeremiah (nickname Jemmy). Bree and Roger are then officially wed during a Scottish gathering at River Run. Things are fairly quiet for them for a while, with Roger taking part in the militia Jamie is ordered to form by the governor. But Roger just can't help himself when it comes to Morag Mackenzie, a woman he met on his sea voyage who happens to be his great-great-grandmother. He feels compelled to help Morag whenever he can, and it puts him in the path of another militia by Morag's husband, who thinks Roger is romantically interested in her. The militia hangs him, and he almost dies before he manages to escape.
Years later, an outbreak of lice necessitates the shaving of Jemmy's head, which reveals a birthmark on his scalp - the same birthmark that Roger has, which means Jemmy is his biological son. Bree becomes pregnant again shortly thereafter, and she and Roger welcome their daughter, Amanda, in 1776. But baby Mandy is born with a heart murmur, something Claire cannot safely repair in that time, so the Mackenzies return to their own time to save Mandy's life.
It is at this point that we don't yet know if we'll get any more Outlander. The return to the 20th century is how Bree and Roger's story ends in book six, A Breath of Snow and Ashes. The Starz series is renewed for seasons five and six, so that may be all we get of Bree and Roger on screen.
This 17-Year-Old Girl Will Play Maria in the West Side Story Remake, and DAMN, Her Voice!
Steven Spielberg's remake of West Side Story is shaping up to feature some powerhouse cast members, including Hollywood newcomer Rachel Zegler. The 17-year-old high school student will be the film's leading lady, Maria, opposite Ansel Elgort's Tony. You'll understand how she nabbed the exciting role after a quick listen to her breathtaking voice.
"I am so thrilled to be playing the iconic role of Maria alongside this amazing cast," Zegler said, according to Variety. "West Side Story was the first musical I encountered with a Latina lead character. As a Colombian-American, I am humbled by the opportunity to play a role that means so much to the Hispanic community."
In a sea of 30,000 submissions, Zegler participated in an online casting call and sent in videos of herself singing "Tonight" and "Me Siento Hermosa/I Feel Pretty" from the movie-musical. While fans haven't gotten a chance to hear these specific versions, Zegler does have a YouTube channel full of incredible covers, including a few of our favorites from the A Star Is Born soundtrack. Prepare yourself to be wowed by her vocal talents, and check out the videos of her singing ahead.
This New Netflix Series Will Chronicle the Grisly Crimes and Chilling Trial of Ted Bundy
It's no secret Netflix has gone all the way in on the true-crime trend; with big shows on its roster like the gripping Making a Murderer, the unsettling mystery of The Keepers, and even the new docuseries The Innocent Man, the streaming platform is practically running the gamut on our culture's strange, murderous obsession. And there's no sign of slowing down; its latest impending release, a docuseries about the crimes and trial of Ted Bundy, will drop at the end of the month. If you're finding that you're morbidly curious about the project, we've assembled the key details for you. From the sound of it, this one's going to be pretty dark.
Ryan Murphy's New Netflix Show Packs a Thrilling Cast and a Chilling Premise
Just when we thought Ryan Murphy had enough shows on his roster - he currently has his hand in American Horror Story, American Crime Story, Feud, and 9-1-1 - we were reminded of his massive Netflix deal that happened nearly a year ago. In mid-January, the TV powerhouse made an announcement about Ratched, the new series he spent the better part of the last year developing (it would seem). The announcement at hand is actually a big, exciting casting declaration in which Murphy rattles off nearly a dozen incredible names that are attached to the project. We're aware: it's a bit of a cart-before-the-horse situation, mostly because, well, we haven't heard a lot about Ratched in the first place. Luckily, we were able to scrape together the basics, and it sure sounds like it's going to be a jolly good time.
Game of Thrones: A Complete Breakdown of Season 8's "Crypts of Winterfell" Teaser
We officially have a premiere date for Game of Thrones' final season, and HBO delivered the news in the best way: with an ominous season eight teaser that's downright chilling. While there's not much action or new scenes from the upcoming season, the video does feature three of the last children of House Stark - Jon, Sansa, and Arya - all together for the first time since season one. The teaser is less than a minute long, but it packs just enough detail in every frame to allow us to dig deep until the next trailer. In case you haven't watched it, oh, 800 times or so already like we have, keep reading to see every itty-bitty thing you might have missed.
So, We Probably Haven't Been Washing Our Water Bottles Enough
I can't count the number of times I've taken a drink from my water bottle and casually thought, "I should really wash that soon." The number of times I've actually washed it? A lot fewer.
Let's add that to my list of New Year's resolutions. A 2018 study from Brazil suggests that water bottles, especially the ones you take to the gym, can accumulate a lot more germs than you'd think. Researchers looked at shaker bottles, used to blend smoothies on the go, comparing 30 clean, unused bottles to 30 belonging to gym-goers. The results came through: 83 percent of the used bottles were contaminated. The biggest bacteria culprits? Staphylococcus aureus, the bacteria that causes staph infection, and E. coli.
Don't panic just yet: researchers said these results weren't completely surprising. E. coli is found in the guts of healthy people, although some strains can lead to illness, according to the Mayo Clinic. Staph bacteria usually won't cause problems either - it's often present in people's skin and noses, the Mayo Clinic said. Still - maybe not something you want to think about drinking.
So how often should you be cleaning that bottle? Ideally, after every use, researchers told Runner's World. They also recommended going for steel, metal, or glass bottles rather than plastic, which holds onto bacteria more easily. You can clean the bottle by simply sticking it in the dishwasher if it's safe to do so (check the bottom of your bottle or the brand's website to make sure). No dishwasher? Pour in some warm water and a few drops of dishwashing soap, close the bottle, and shake it up to clean. Don't forget to scrub the cap and straw with a soapy sponge.
Also good to know: researchers said that most contamination comes from handling the bottle, not actually drinking from it, so make sure to wash your hands properly after going to the bathroom, working out, and even touching your face. Adding more handwashing and dishwashing doesn't exactly sound fun, but if it keeps my bottle clean and cute for many workouts to come, hey, I'll give it a shot.

Calling All Vegans: You Can Now Enjoy Yogurt, Thanks to Nondairy Chobani
If you're vegan, you're familiar with the search for alternatives to delicious dairy products the world has to offer: cheese, milk, ice cream, the works. Yogurt, too, is something people who've gone dairy-free want in their shopping carts - and now, Chobani is making it that much easier to track down.
Last week, Chobani unveiled a line of vegan yogurt hitting grocery stores nationwide this month: Chobani made with organic coconut puree in place of dairy. This is the company's first plant-based recipe.
Chobani told POPSUGAR that coconut is a "leader among nondairy options in our category and has shown consistent growth."
"We have already worked with coconut as a core ingredient for many of our products," the company said. "It felt like a natural fit to start our plant-based journey with coconut because we know consumers love the taste and texture of coconut, and we already work with great suppliers."
The nondairy products come in single-serve cups that retail at $2 and 7-ounce single-serve drinks for $2.49. Flavors include "slightly sweet" plain, blueberry, strawberry, vanilla, mango, peach, and vanilla chai.
Since yogurt is technically a dairy product, Peter McGuinness, Chobani's chief marketing and commercial officer, told CNN that you "can't call it a yogurt." So, the vegan line will be labeled on shelves simply as "Non-Dairy Chobani."
These products are made from natural, non-GMO ingredients and have 25 percent less sugar than other nondairy brands, according to the company. The Non-Dairy Chobani ranges from 130 to 150 calories per serving. Its six live, active cultures make this a gut-friendly treat you can feel good about. And, like most Chobani Greek yogurt varieties, it's also gluten-free.
It's important to note, though, that each serving only has one gram of protein, so if protein-packed nondairy alternatives are more your style, you might want to look elsewhere. (Try this DIY vegan Greek yogurt, for instance.)
Keep reading for a preview of this vegan line, available now, and head out to your local grocery store for a taste (or 12).
10 Easy Ways to Stay in a Calorie Deficit, Making Weight Loss Effortless
If you want to lose weight, you need to be in a modest calorie deficit - not a huge one, because you won't be able to sustain it. You can calculate your calorie deficit by multiplying your bodyweight by 10 to 12. Your caloric intake should fall somewhere within these numbers. Another way to calculate your calorie deficit is to figure out your TDEE (total energy expenditure, which is the number of calories your body burns each day) and subtract 500 calories.
Make sure you're always eating more than 1,200 calories each day, even more if you're working out regularly. Eating less will make you tired and increase cravings and hunger, which will only lead to overeating. Aside from just eating fewer calories, here are some easy ways you can stay in a caloric deficit without increasing hunger.
Does Walking Burn Belly Fat? We Tapped a Dietitian and Personal Trainer to Explain
No matter how many crunches you do or how long you hold a plank, you can't spot-reduce belly fat. Sorry! It's one of those unfortunate universal truths, like how eating spicy foods won't speed up your metabolism and doing a juice cleanse won't "detox" your body. But you can make an effort to reduce belly fat if that's the area you are looking to lose weight from - you just have to be strategic about it.
When you lose weight, your body decides where it comes from, which means you have to lose weight overall to see any results from your belly. You can do this by eating in a healthy calorie deficit, choosing nutritious foods, and burning calories (and strengthening muscle) through exercise. We've already covered the fact that walking is a good form of exercise that can help you lose weight, but what about belly fat?
"Walking as a workout can help one lose belly fat; however, a lot of workouts focus on intensity," Jim White, RDN, ACSM-certified personal trainer and owner of Jim White Fitness and Nutrition Studios, told POPSUGAR. So in that case, running would typically have a greater effect on belly fat than walking, but any cardio is a good form of exercise for people looking to lose weight. Cardio helps you burn calories and lose weight overall - Jim recommends 300 minutes of cardio a week - which, in turn, will result in the loss of belly fat.
For people who are already active, Jim recommends running or walking up stairs (or using a stairclimber) as opposed to standard walking, since doing a leisurely stroll probably won't get their heart rate up. But for someone who isn't typically active and just starting out on a weight-loss journey, walking could be a good form of exercise. If you want to get a jump-start on walking for weight loss, check out this four-week walking plan.
But at the end of the day, Jim reiterated that losing belly fat and maintaining that fat loss is all determined by the amount of calories lost versus what is consumed. Unfortunately, calorie intake isn't a one-size-fits-all equation; it depends on age, weight, height, sex, and activity level. To calculate how many calories you need to lose weight, use this formula.
Selma Blair Opens Up About the Difficulties of Living With MS in Emotional Instagram Post
Selma Blair shared an emotional look at what it's really like to live with multiple sclerosis. On Sunday night, the actress posted a photo of herself cuddling a stuffed bear and included a lengthy caption outlining the struggles she's faced because of the disease. "There is a truth with neurogedenerative brain disease. It is uncomfortable. It is a stadium of uncontrollable anxiety at times. Going out, being sociable holds a heavy price. My brain is on fire," she wrote. Selma was diagnosed with MS in October, and she's been candid about the fact that it's a battle.
The Cruel Intentions star, who's mom to 7-year-old Arthur Saint Bleick, continued with an optimistic sentiment, saying, "I have a full week ahead with mothering and appointments and things to look forward to. But like many of us, I am praying. Soaking in love where I can. It's not easy. That's OK." Selma included the hashtags #stillanactress and #willmakeitwork.
She also got real about the fact that self-care can be a serious mood booster - for Selma, that's her new blond bob haircut. She gave a shout-out to her colorist and said, "I can't thank you enough for the morale boost of blonde." Read Selma's heartfelt post in full above.
This Is Why Your Metabolism Slows Down With Age - Here's What You Can Do About It
Aging is inevitable, and with it comes a lot of changes to our bodies. One of the biggest changes that takes place deals with our metabolism. Metabolism gets a lot of buzz, especially if you're trying to boost it, but have you ever wondered what happens to your metabolism as you get older? To answer this question, POPSUGAR spoke with Avigdor Arad, PhD, RDN, CDE, director of the Mount Sinai Physiolab.
Before going any further, we want to make sure you understand what your metabolism actually is and why it's important. Your metabolism is a complex process that relates to how your body processes energy from fat, sugar, and protein and how it stores that energy. When people talk about their metabolism, they really mean their metabolic rate - the amount of energy, more commonly known as calories, you burn in a day.
Although it is possible to boost your metabolism, "As you age, you lose muscle and that's the mechanism that seems to explain why there is a reduction in energy expenditure on the metabolic rate," Dr. Arad told POPSUGAR. With age, women will experience a reduction of estrogen (caused by menopause) and men will see a reduction in testosterone, which can lead to a higher fat mass and lower muscle mass.
"As you age, you lose muscle and muscle is a very active tissue. When you have less muscle and more fat, it translates to less energy," Dr. Arad explained. Ultimately, how much your metabolism slows with age "really comes down to how much muscle and how much fat you have," he said.
According to Dr. Arad, people over 65 years old tend to burn up to 30 percent less compared to in their 20s because of a reduction of muscle. To prevent a drastic decrease in your metabolic rate as you age, Dr. Arad recommends doing a combination of cardio and weight training to preserve your muscle mass. Staying active will also ensure you can maintain your independence, it will keep you strong and prevent falling, and it will also preserve your energy expenditure/energy level, he said.
Other ways to speed up your metabolism are by eating more protein and healthy fats because they have a higher thermic effect and it's harder for your body to digest and store them. Dr. Arad also advised reducing your sugar intake because sugar-rich foods have a lower thermic effect and require less energy to process. Finally, as mentioned before, strength training will increase your muscle mass and as a result, your metabolic rate. Here's a four-week weightlifting plan to get you started.

Can You Eat the Pain Away? Here's What Happened When I Followed an Anti-Inflammatory Diet
Training for a marathon has a lot of caveats. The biggest one, of course, is that you actually have to run 26.2 miles in the end. But you have to do a lot of other things, too. You have to take care of your body and specifically make time for things like foam rolling. You also have to be mindful about what you eat. With the Boston Marathon on my bucket list, I knew it was time to get my mind and body right. Triggered by a little bit of pain in my lower back (screw you, arthritis) and my left hip (ugh, Spin classes), I wondered if there was anything I could do differently with my diet to better my situation. And that's when a friend of mine recommended eating an anti-inflammatory diet.
An anti-inflammatory diet, you say? I wondered, and then I did my research. Essentially, an anti-inflammatory diet consists of the same healthy, unprocessed foods a lot of popular diets recommend, plus being mega attentive to nutrition labels, trying to avoid added, unnecessary sugar. The goal is eliminating foods known to trigger inflammation in the body. Although eating anti-inflammatory foods is definitely trendy, like Bulletproof Coffee or the Paleo diet, research definitely reveals its total-body benefits. Studies show that unresolved inflammation has been linked to the early development of chronic disease.
"There are many foods that can help to combat inflammation in the body," says Alissa Rumsey, M.S., R.D., owner of Alissa Rumsey Nutrition and Wellness. "A diet that includes plenty of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, omega-3 fats, and antioxidants is your best defense against inflammation."
Building blocks. I could work with this, I thought. Rumsey gave me some more guidelines as to what specifically to hone in on, which seemed a lot like a Mediterranean diet. Think things like fatty fish, boatloads of fruits and vegetables, sweet potatoes, berries ("berries, especially, have been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties due to the high content of anthocyanin, a powerful phytonutrient"), and tomatoes - for their high concentration of lycopene, which reduces inflammation. Also: whole grains, olive oil, and foods with unsaturated fats, like avocado and seeds. On the "DO NOT EVEN THINK ABOUT IT" list: large amounts of refined sugar, highly processed foods (see ya later, Friday pizza nights), and too much alcohol.
My task: stick to this clean way of eating for a week to see if I felt any all-over body shifts. Here are four lessons I learned from my week of eating an anti-inflammatory diet.
