What Exercises Burn the Most Belly Fat? These 20 (and Here's a 40-Minute HIIT Workout Using Them)
Although it's impossible to spot-reduce certain parts of your body, when you lower your body fat percentage, those areas will start to lean out. If belly fat is an area you are trying to target, while healthy eating is key, there is one type of exercise proven to diminish belly fat: high-intensity interval training (HIIT).
David Chesworth, an ACSM-certified personal trainer and wellness coach at Hilton Head Health, told POPSUGAR that a combination of HIIT and the right nutrition plan can help reduce belly fat. Bodyweight and dumbbell moves are great exercises you can use in HIIT workouts. You just need to focus on working hard for a certain amount of time, followed by a period of rest, and then repeat.
Not sure how to start? If you're sweating it out at home, here's a basic HIIT workout plan you can use. Just modify it based on the moves you prefer and the body parts you want to target (example moves are listed below). ACE-certified fitness instructor John Kersbergen suggests that doing HIIT workouts that combine strength-training moves three to four times a week is enough to start seeing results.
40-Minute HIIT Workout
Equipment needed: One pair of light dumbbells and one pair of heavy dumbbells
Directions: Choose what four exercises you want to do (two bodyweight moves and two dumbbell moves). Perform each exercise for 40 seconds followed by a 20-second rest. Repeat the four-minute circuit 10 times for a total of 40 minutes.

Here's How Many Minutes You'd Need to Walk Each Day to Lose Weight, According to a Trainer
Walking may seem too simple to be an effective form of exercise, but if you play your cards right, this familiar movement can be a lean, mean, weight-loss-generating machine. While a casual 10-minute stroll won't do it, you don't need to spend hours on your feet, either.
"You should aim for about three to five sessions of cardio a week that are around a half hour," Courtney Meadows, an NASM-certified personal trainer and fitness coach, told POPSUGAR. "For beginners, even walking 10 minutes a day is a great place to start. Increasing your walking time by just five minutes will get you there."
Courtney suggests walking at an easy pace for five minutes or more to warm up and get your body ready to burn fat.
"If you can, it's best to use a heart rate app when walking to make sure you're in the right zone for fat loss," Courtney explained. "After the warmup, you'll want to get your heart rate to 60 to 70 percent of your maximum heart rate," which you can find by subtracting your age from 220. "You'll want the majority of your workout to be in this stage with a five-minute cooldown," she said.
While finding a cardio regimen that gets results is important, Courtney noted that it should also be one you enjoy. When exercise becomes second nature, it's much easier to stay on track.

Here's What You Need to Know About the New Diet That Has the Potential to Save the World
Move over, keto diet; there's a new diet ready to take the throne. According to a new report published in The Lancet, people should eat less meat and sugar and more fruits and vegetables, NBC News reported.
Making these nutritional changes would lead to more sustainable methods in agriculture, cause less pollution, and contribute less to global warming and climate change. "Food systems have the potential to nurture human health and support environmental sustainability, however our current trajectories threaten both," the commission said.

"Healthy diets have an optimal caloric intake and consist largely of a diversity of plant-based foods, low amounts of animal source foods, contain unsaturated rather than saturated fats, and limited amounts of refined grains, highly processed foods and added sugars," the commission said.

How Magnesium Supplements Helped Regulate My Anxiety
Generalized anxiety is one of the most common ailments in our society, affecting 40 million adults ages 18 years or older in the United States today. The odd part is is how taboo it still feels. It is common to focus on this issue as something that is "in our heads," and part of that is true - things like yoga, meditation, and exercise really do provide relief. However, with such a large chunk of our population suffering from a variety of symptoms attributed to anxiety, it is important to look at the environment or physical aspects.
Finding a solution in a natural supplement was a big relief, and when I added it to my daily diet and felt results, I was grateful.
A lot of what initiates this type of fearful thinking has to do with the balance (or lack thereof) of chemicals in our bodies. What Magnesium Does
Magnesium, like all vitamins, is ideally obtained through eating magnesium-rich food. Foods like sunflower seeds, almonds, shrimp, spinach, and avocados are high in it, but sometimes the way things are grown or processed may have a different effect on how our body absorbs it. This is where having a magnesium supplement can help. Magnesium supports the regulation of cortisol levels (or stress hormones), so it is vital mineral in our diet for keeping such emotions in balance. Studies have shown that it seems to have an effect on our hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, the glands that are associated with stress.
Additionally, 90 percent of serotonin (the feel-good hormone) is made in the gut. Since this hormone is usually known as a brain transmitter, many don't realize that its production begins in our stomachs. This means that gut health is of utmost importance when it comes to fighting anxiety, depression, and stress. However, when magnesium levels in the gut are low, it can change the habitat of the ecosystem in our stomachs and, therefore, negatively affect our capability of creating serotonin, keeping us in that feeling-low/anxious zone.
So, not only does magnesium regulate stress hormones, but it also helps to create the happy ones.
How It Has Helped Me
I was personally never comfortable with added medication and all the side effects that come with it into my body to help fight my anxiety. Once I started doing the necessary research into finding natural ways to help fight it and keep it at bay, I found magnesium as an option. Once I made that a part of my diet, I could feel the positive effects it had on my body and mood. Of course, different things work for different people, so it is always wise to discuss such contributions to your diet with your doctor. However, my personal experience made me a believer, as I felt more leveled and at ease even when life factors like work contributed to stress.
What I Pair It With
I pair my magnesium supplement (one a day) intake with other anxiety-fighting remedies as well, such as taking probiotics and fiber (to help keep that gut health in check), exercise, eight-plus hours of sleep, stretching, and dry brushing (I'm telling ya, sometimes the little things can work too!), and so far, I've found a great recipe that allows me to feel comfortable, happy, and well. You can also get magnesium through Epsom salts while soaking in a bath if taking a pill is not of comfort to you.
Ultimately, it is important to take a proactive stance on your own diet, lifestyle, triggers, and stressors when it comes to managing anxiety. But it is also important to go back to the basics of our bodies and learning how they function. Finding a solution in a natural supplement was a big relief, and when I added it to my daily diet and felt results, I was grateful.

This Is What Your Macros Should Be If You're Trying to Lose Weight, According to a Dietitian
You've already heard this before: weight loss is all about calories in, calories out (or CICO). And while that seems like an easy-enough concept, it's much more complicated. Everyone burns calories at a different rate, thanks to a little thing called your metabolism. And with other factors - such as age, sex, and activity level - in the mix, finding your exact calorie target isn't a one-size-fits-all number. This is why many people have turned to counting macros. Macronutrients are what make up the calories in food, and the three types are carbohydrates, protein, and fat. One gram of carbs is four calories, one gram of protein is four calories, and one gram of fat is nine calories. The theory behind counting macros is that you focus on the quality of foods you are eating rather than just calories alone. And if you focus on good-quality food and balance out your macros, you will get a well-rounded diet full of fiber-rich carbs, healthy fats, and lean protein.
But what should your macro profile look like if you're trying to lose weight? "Ideal macronutrient breakdown will vary from person to person, as there are a variety of factors that go into calculating the optimal ratio," registered dietitian and ACSM-certified personal trainer Jim White, owner of Jim White Fitness and Nutrition Studios, told POPSUGAR. And while it will depend on your caloric needs, activity levels, and goals, Jim recommends a standard macro breakdown as a good place to start, which he shares below.
What Your Macro Breakdown Should Be For Weight Loss
"For weight loss, we typically try to increase protein and fat intake and decrease carbohydrate intake," Jim explained. "Protein increases a person's metabolism. With a decreased carbohydrate intake, the body has less fuel to use to get through a high-intensity workout. An increased fat intake allows the body to start using fat as the main source of energy and thus is burned more so than any of the other macronutrients."
Still, he doesn't think people should completely give up carbs or even eat a low-carb diet. For weight loss, Jim recommends a general breakdown of 40:30:30 - 40 percent carbs, 30 percent protein, and 30 percent fat. This ensures you are getting enough carbs to give you energy and fuel your workouts, protein to build muscle and keep you satiated, and fat to also increase satiety and help your body burn fat.
To find out exactly how many calories should come from each macro, you need to know your daily calorie intake. So if you are eating 1,900 calories a day, 760 should come from carbs, 570 from protein, and 570 from fat. For a more in-depth way to calculate your calories from macros, find the equations here.
All in all, counting macros is an excellent weight-loss tool that can also help you create a healthy, well-rounded diet. And while 40:30:30 is a good place to start, you may want to meet with a registered dietitian to determine your exact macro needs. The best part? This Is What It's Like Getting Through the Workday When You Have Anxiety
Living with anxiety is like swimming in the ocean during a storm: it's a struggle to keep your head above water, and any minute, you could get swallowed up by a wave. Even when I feel calm, I'm always on edge worried about when the next surge of anxiety will hit or if a panic attack is around the corner. It's hard enough to deal with in my personal life, but when it comes to my professional life, it takes everything I have for it to not be all-consuming.
I should preface this by saying that I haven't been diagnosed with an anxiety disorder; rather, I have bipolar 2, of which anxiety is a major symptom. Along with hypomanic and depressive episodes, I also struggle with intrusive thoughts and physical symptoms of anxiety. I've become a pro at catastrophizing everything, which means my mind immediately jumps to the worst conclusion and envisions horrific scenarios. And while I've done a pretty good job keeping it together at work, my brain is like that scene in Ocean's Twelve where that guy dodges all the lasers, except I'm playing mental gymnastics trying to avoid every negative thought as it pops in my head.
On a good day, my anxiety typically only arises on a case-by-case basis. Since my manager works out of the West Coast office, I sometimes worry that she didn't get my Slack messages or emails or that I came off as unprofessional in them. When I'm in a meeting, I'll occasionally worry that my ideas won't land and people will think I'm unqualified for the job. I double and triple check my calendar to make sure I didn't miss any important meetings.
I feel like a prisoner trapped in my own brain.
Fortunately, I don't experience the extreme effects of anxiety every day. But on a bad day, it's almost debilitating - I feel like a prisoner trapped in my own brain. I envision everything going wrong in the worst possible scenario with outlandish, nearly impossible outcomes. Instead of worrying about looking unprepared in a meeting, I vividly envision me having word vomit and offending every single person in the room, even if I don't actively harbor negative feelings about anyone. When my boss calls an unexpected meeting, I automatically assume I'm getting fired. These thoughts manifest themselves into physical symptoms such as my heart racing, my stomach in knots and cramps, and an inability to concentrate. My mind races a mile a minute, and it takes a concerted effort to stay on track and power through with my tasks.
To combat my mental illness, I take a cocktail of medication at night and exercise in the morning before work. During the day, I have been taking CBD oil regularly, and it's been a game changer. I usually take about 20-40 milligrams each morning (Charlotte's Web and Sunday Scaries have been my favorites lately) in the form of a tincture: I put a dropper or two under my tongue, let it dissolve for a minute, then swallow. I sometimes supplement with a gummy (or two) from Not Pot or Sunday Scaries. I was previously taking it on an as-needed basis, which wasn't as effective. I've found that taking it every day has allowed the CBD to build up in my system, and I have many fewer bouts of overwhelming anxiety. And while I don't take a benzodiazepine (Xanax, Klonopin, Ativan, etc.) for anxiety, it may be beneficial for some people when prescribed under the supervision of a psychiatrist.
I also try to stay organized, which helps keep my brain focused and on track. I write out a to-do list every day with my upcoming assignments and projects. I check my calendar each morning to be prepared for the meetings ahead (but not obsessively, like when I'm feeling anxious) and check our editorial calendar to see what I have on deck. I take notes on a notepad during meetings (I tend to remember things better when I write them down) and review them at the end of the day.
Some days, I'll take a 10- to 15-minute break every few hours to step away from my desk and take some deep breaths. I'll text some friends, look at funny memes, or step outside to get some fresh air and walk around the block. Again, these coping strategies might not work for everyone, but combating anxiety (for me) requires a diligent effort of taking my medication and these lifestyle factors.
I'm fortunate that my company is so understanding for someone who has a mental illness - I didn't necessarily disclose it to HR, but I write for a living and have been open about my mental illness in a variety of posts for the site. But I understand not every company is that way. Disclosing a mental illness is a deeply personal choice and may not be for everyone. Chris Pratt and Katherine Schwarzenegger's Whirlwind Romance in Pictures
Wedding bells are ringing for Chris Pratt and Katherine Schwarzenegger! The couple got engaged over the weekend after less than a year of dating, and from the looks of it, they're crazy about each other. Chris and Katherine first sparked dating rumors in June 2018, and apparently Chris got permission from Katherine's famous parents, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver, before popping the question. "He asked for Maria and Arnold's blessing and was very traditional about things," People reported. "He's been bonding with all of Katherine's siblings and it was clear to her entire family they would get married."
Chris was previously married to Anna Faris, and they share 6-year-old son Jack - but don't worry, there's no bad blood. Just a Ton of Hilarious Observations About the Queen Bee of Netflix's You: Peach Salinger

Whether you hate Peach Salinger or worship her (or find yourself decidedly somewhere in the middle), there's no denying that the queen bee of Netflix's You is highly entertaining. Played to perfection by Pretty Little Liars alum Shay Mitchell, Peach has no shortage of one-liners that make us simultaneously cringe and respect her - "Male energy in my healing space just isn't optimal" - and also harbors a few dangerous secrets of her own, which Joe (Penn Badgley) soon discovers.
Chief among them is her obsession with her best friend, Beck, who fans of the show pretty unanimously can't stand (we don't blame them). As soon as Joe realizes that Peach, a Brown alum and wealthy beyond belief, is competing for his target's affection, there's nothing that can stop him from taking her out - not even a first edition of Ozma of Oz. So, What Does the Election Mean For Randall and Beth's Marriage on This Is Us?

We're back in action, This Is Us fans! During the midseason premiere of our favorite family show, we get answers to some questions like if Jack knew Nicky was alive, and if Randall wins the election. However, there's still one big looming cloud surrounding Randall and Beth's marriage, and it's tugging at our heartstrings.
We began to witness a rift in their marriage before the season three break when Beth asks Randall to drop out of the council race and he refuses, causing a rocky road in their marriage throughout the seven weeks leading up to the election. Now that we know Randall actually wins, we're left wondering what it means for our beloved R and B. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, actor Sterling K. Brown spoke to what winning the election means for his marriage. "There's going to be some trials and tribulations," he said. "There is rocky terrain ahead, but there's rocky terrain in any marriage that's worth its salt, and you figure out how to make it through. I'm hopeful. I have remained ever hopeful that Beth and Randall figure out a way to make it through, but we have seen a glimpse into their future, which may lead folks to believe that they didn't quite make it all the way."
Fans stressed over their relationship after the midseason finale in November, but were reassured after a tiny clue showed Randall wearing a wedding ring in the flash forward regarding "her." The question of who is "her" has been theorized about since season two when an elderly Randall and an adult Tess reveal they're going to see someone - it's later revealed that the "her" is Rebecca. In the flash forward, Randall asks Tess if she called her mom to tell them they were on the way. In the same scene, we see Beth overlooking a skilled ballet group speaking with her assistant, who tells her that Tess called. Beth tells her assistant they are going to see Randall's mother. While many people are curious why Randall wouldn't just call his wife, suspecting they are divorced, let me just say that as a child more technologically savvy than my parents, it's not weird to ask the child to call the other parent.
It wouldn't be out of the ordinary for producers to want us to think that Randall and Beth have split, especially following the present-day fight. However, a keen-eyed Reddit user pointed out that in the flash forward from the first episode of season three, Randall is wearing his wedding ring. Sure, it could mean that they split up and Randall has remarried, or that their relationship is as stable as it's always been portrayed throughout the series thus far.

Robert Pattinson Is on a Twisted Space Mission in the Unsettling Trailer For High Life
Robert Pattinson is starring in a forthcoming sci-fi thriller that looks like Passengers, but better. Also starring Juliette Binoche, Mia Goth, and André Benjamin, High Life is about a group of criminals on a supposed mission to a black hole. It seems the real mission, however - led by Binoche's character - is more of a reproductive experiment. Directed by Claire Denis, it will be the French Chocolat director's first English-language film. High Life premiered during the Toronto International Film Festival, and it will officially hit theaters on April 12. You'll Need a Full Box of Tissues to Get Through the Emotional Trailer For Five Feet Apart
It's been four long years since The Fault in Our Stars broke our hearts into teeny-tiny pieces, and now it looks like another medical-tinged romantic drama has arrived to shatter us once more.
In Five Feet Apart, directed by Jane the Virgin's Justin Baldoni, 17-year-old Stella (Split's Haley Lu Richardson) is stuck living in a hospital due to her cystic fibrosis diagnosis. It's a boring existence of routines and boundaries, until she meets Will (Riverdale's Cole Sprouse), a charming teenager who also happens to have CF. Even though there's an instant attraction, the pair have to keep a safe distance between them because of their illnesses, which only makes their Romeo and Juliet-esque romance all the more intense.
Before the first full trailer dropped, Baldoni shared a sweet glimpse of the film via Instagram. "Here we go!" he captioned the brief clip. "The first trailer for #FiveFeetApart drops TOMORROW . . . Yes, They Got the Same Actor From Unbreakable to Return as David's Son in Glass!
With Glass in theaters on Jan. 18, M. Night Shyamalan has officially closed the book on an epic trilogy nearly two decades in the making. That's a pretty incredible scope, when you think about it. It's even more incredible to think that the director managed to secure two leads to reprise their roles 19 years after they originated them; Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson are back in full force as our respective hero and villain, David Dunn and Elijah "Mr. Glass" Price. But as it turns out, these aren't the only two actors to make a miraculous return for the big finale.
In addition to the aforementioned two, Charlayne Woodard is also back as Elijah's mother. Not only that, but, Spencer Treat Clark is back as David Dunn's son! Yep, it's unmistakable: that really is the same bright-eyed little boy who appeared on screen way back in 2000. Clark's return is perhaps the most exciting and surprising among the group. After all, young child actors go off and do all kinds of things. Sure, some grow up in the business and maintain a steady career, but I'd argue there are many more that have their very young moment in the spotlight and continue on to live a rather normal life outside of Hollywood. It's pretty cool to see Clark once again beside Willis as son and father, with the former being a sidekick of sorts to his vigilante dad.
It's these types of details that add a really special quality to Glass. Don't get me wrong: I didn't really love it, and I thought it was kind of a mess. I had way too many questions walking out, and felt like the execution of the idea was more of a wasted opportunity than a success. (Sorry, M. Night Shyamalan!) But little things like this, like Clark's return as a grown man, do sort of make Glass sparkle in a different way - kind of like 2014's epic 12-story masterpiece, Boyhood.
So, maybe it's worth it to go and see Glass if not to see all the disparate pieces come together in some sort of magical way. Just don't bother waiting for a postcredits scene.

One of the things we love most about Prince Harry's royal appearances - aside from seeing him with Meghan Markle, of course - is seeing the hilarious homemade signs well-wishers greet him with. During his visit to Birkenhead, England, on Monday, the Duke of Sussex shared an incredibly sweet moment with a 4-year-old girl named Eliza Morris after he caught sight of her "#GingersUnite" sign in the crowd. "I love this," Harry told Eliza as he went in for a hug. "Do you love your hair? The sign is amazing!" Fun fact: one of Princess Diana's nicknames for Harry used to be "Ginger." Aw!

Marvel Fans Have 1 Big Question After Watching the Spider-Man: Far From Home Trailer
Now that I've seen the Spider-Man: Far From Home trailer, I have a question for Marvel: I don't mean to be rude or anything, but, um . . . how the hell is Peter Parker still alive?!
As any fan of the superhero franchise knows, Tom Holland's iteration of the character bites the dust - sorry - at the end of Avengers: Infinity War when Thanos kills half of all life on Earth with a snap. The murderous act also takes out other key Avengers, like Black Panther and a few Guardians of the Galaxy, making the reappearance of Peter in the trailer for Far From Home (which comes out a few months after the final Avengers film, Endgame, FYI) pretty suspect. Doesn't the confirmation of him being alive in the new movie technically spoil the ending to Endgame?
To be fair, did I realize Peter and all the other characters were always going to come back in Avengers: Endgame in some way? Yes. Has the image of Peter tearfully disintegrating nonetheless been seared onto my retinas for all eternity? Also, yes. Whether a journey through the Quantum Realm saves the Avengers, or something tricky goes on with the time stone, there's no way that Marvel would kill off all of their beloved heroes in one fell swoop (Iron Man on the other hand . . . well . . . we don't have much hope for him right now, to be honest). It's also worth pointing out that a sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming had been announced before Infinity War.

Mysterio Isn't the Only Villain in Spider-Man: Far From Home - Meet the Elementals
Marvel fans already have the scoop on Spider-Man: Far From Home's most recognizable villain, Mysterio (played by Jake Gyllenhaal), but they might not be well-versed on the other danger threatening to interrupt Peter Parker's Summer vacation. Namely, the four known as the Elementals in Marvel Comics lore.
The Elementals are four immortal, extradimensional humanoids with power over natural forces: Hellfire, Hydron, Magnum, and Zephyr, each possessing power over fire, water, earth, and air, respectively. According to lore, they ruled a kingdom on Earth before the rise of Atlantis and were banished to another dimension when they tried to conquer Egypt. They eventually make their way back to modern Earth and frequently lock horns with Carol Danvers (which is a pretty interesting connection to the upcoming Captain Marvel film). The Elementals are seriously formidable foes with a bloodthirst that rivals most Marvel villains - though Thanos will always hold a special place in our hearts.
Thanks to some subtle Easter eggs that fans caught in the trailer, some believe the villains could be a reinvention of the Amazing Spider-Man's Sandman, Molten Man, and Hydro-Man. While it would definitely be cool to see the classic villains make their collective debut on the big screen - though Sandman does appear in Spider-Man 3, played by Thomas Haden Church - the beings shown in the trailer point to Elementals more than anyone else. The "Sandman" in the trailer looks to be made from rocks, which is much more Magnum's ability than Sandman's, and Zephyr is shown to be creating the windstorm that Spider-Man glides through in his new suit.
Though Spider-Man never encounters the Elementals in the comic book, his adventures against Mysterio might suggest a reason they're making an appearance in the MCU. In the comics, Mysterio's abilities are generally limited to his knowledge of stunt-work and special effects. He doesn't have the Doctor Strange-like powers that we glimpsed in the teaser. One of his favorite tricks is to create illusions of terrifying monsters that only he can defeat so he can play the hero and win the fame he thinks he deserves. It wouldn't be absurd to wonder if he's using the Elementals to play the same trick in Far From Home.
We won't know anything more until the film comes out on July 5, but we can already tell it'll be exciting!

Here's Why Anne Hathaway Thinks the Oscars Are Seemingly Incapable of Finding a Host
Anne Hathaway isn't necessarily surprised the Academy Awards are having a hard time finding a host. After the award show's intended host, Kevin Hart, stepped down after a number of his homophobic tweets resurfaced, it's fairly certain at this point the Oscars will not have a host for the first time in 30 years. Hathaway, who hosted alongside James Franco in 2011, is now being asked to weigh in on the controversy as she promotes her latest film, Serenity.
In addition to the time and effort the hosting gig requires, Hathaway thinks the show's gravitas is a drawback for potential hosts. "It's not the Golden Globes, where you can be irreverent and be a little drunk and curse. There's a sense of occasion to it," she told the Associated Press. "We're living through a time right now where people don't take kindly to a sense of occasion to or somebody who self-aggrandizes or any of those things. There is something in the DNA of the Oscars that is about that."

Hathaway didn't have an easy go of it when she hosted the Oscars, either. She was criticized for trying too hard, while Franco was criticized for not trying hard enough. Those who have stepped into the arguably thankless job since haven't fared much better, particularly since live-tweeting became a thing. "I do understand why people don't necessarily really want to take it on," Hathaway said. This Common Problem May Be Interfering With Your Booty Gains, According to Trainer Massy Arias
How disappointing is it to do a killer booty workout, only to be sore in just your quads the next day? OK, yes, there are worse things (like having to walk up stairs when those quads are fried), but it's still pretty annoying. We caught up with health coach and fitness guru Massy Arias at the Fabletics X Kelly Rowland launch event to get her take on how to fire up your glutes and make all the gains.
In terms of firing the correct muscles, Massy, whose list of celebrity clients includes Kelly Rowland, agrees that the struggle is real - even for a top trainer like her! Massy explained, "I used to have that problem and my hips were off and I couldn't fire my glutes properly." If you are quad-dominant and not properly engaging your glutes, you need to look at your exercise selection and form. Rather than focusing on quad-dominant exercises, select ones that focus the work on the hamstring and booty - like bridges or single-leg deadlifts. Massy recommends skipping front lunges and opting for reverse lunges instead because in the latter, it's easier to engage your glutes. However, if you are like Massy and have trouble just getting your glutes to work, Massy continued, "You need to look at your movement patterns and that's what you need to fix because your body mechanics are off." Work with a personal trainer or physical therapist to determine why your glutes are dormant or to identity if something is off in your joints that is not allowing your body to perform certain movements and feel them in the correct place. "It's all about the mechanics of your body," she emphasized.

- This is one breath. Now inhale again and repeat three more times for a total of four cycles.

I Pee When I Jump Rope, and Guess What? It's OK!
There used to be a running joke in my house: every time I'd laugh too hard or sneeze, I'd have to run upstairs, and my kids would yell, "Mommy peed in her pants again!" Through CrossFit, specifically from doing heavy squats and core work, it's helped to strengthen my pelvic floor, similarly to how kegels work. My legs, butt, and abs are the strongest they've ever been, and apparently so are my inner lady muscles. Now, I can sneeze without having to bee-line it to the bathroom.
But one exercise that I recently started working on has brought back that unexpected, embarrassing little annoyance - double unders. It's a more intense form of jumping rope that involves letting the rope pass underneath your feet twice in between each jump instead of just once as with regular jumping rope. They're super fun to work on, not only for the physical challenge to see how many I can nail in a row, but also because they make my heart rate soar, so I know I'm working hard.
The only issue is, once I got eight or more in a row, pee would just leak out of me. The first time it happened in class, I ran to the bathroom. Then I picked up my rope and started jumping again. But even with an empty bladder, I ended up peeing a little. I was like, "Where the heck is this pee coming from?"
After that, feeling flustered and worried about Niagara Falls pouring down my leggings, I avoided double unders for a few weeks, until I talked to some other CrossFit moms about it. Every single one of them nodded their heads up and down, totally relating. Some said it happens when they do box jumps, too, and another woman said it happens every time she does heavy squats. It's just one of those amazing "gifts" to remind us of motherhood.
Knowing I wasn't alone made me feel 99 percent better. The other one percent came from wearing a pantyliner and dark pants every time I went to class. It was slightly annoying, but much better than dealing with the fear of my bladder exploding during class and having a rush of pee trickle down my leg into a puddle on the floor.
Now, I always make time to hit the ladies room before a workout involving jumping rope; sometimes I even take a pee break during a workout if I need to. But what's really helped me come to terms with peeing while exercising is that I changed my whole perspective. I focus on the fact that I'm grateful for being a mom to two healthy, kind kids, that I have the physical ability to take part in CrossFit classes. Compared to other things that could happen, a little pee is nothing!

Science Says Smiling Makes Your Workouts Better, So I Gave It a Shot
I'm all about quick fixes that make workouts more effective, and if there's a trick to make a workout seem easier, I've probably tried that too. Those things don't usually come packaged together, but science may have hit the jackpot, and it has nothing to do with physical form or mental mantras. Nope, it's just smiling.
There's already evidence to suggest that smiling can trick your brain into thinking that you're happy, triggering the release of feel-good hormones such as dopamine and serotonin that can lift your mood in reality. A 2017 UK study tested the benefits of smiling in a fitness capacity, and their findings suggest that smiling can actually help you perform better during workouts.
Researchers tested the trick by asking groups of runners to jog while smiling, frowning, relaxing their upper body, or using their usual mental workout strategies. As the participants ran, scientists measured how much oxygen they used per stride (their "running economy"), with lower numbers showing a more efficient workout.
The study was small, with 24 participants, but results showed that the runners who smiled were the most efficient. That group also reported lower "perceived effort" than the frowning group, meaning that they didn't feel they had to work as hard. So, what's behind the results? Lead researcher Noel Brick told the New York Times that smiling probably leads to overall muscle relaxation, which in turn leads to better overall performance.
One interesting caveat: according to Brick, the more forced your smile is, the less likely you are to relax and activate those performance gains. Genuine smiles, the ones that light up your eyes, brighten your cheeks, and feel the most natural, are your best bet to having a better workout and feeling better while you do it.
It sounds like a strange trick, but some of the best athletes in the world have used it. Champion marathoner Eliud Kipchoge smiled through the last few miles of his two-hour, 25-second marathon in May 2017, the fastest 26.2 ever. He was smiling, he told Wired, in hopes of relaxing himself and dealing with the pain.
Testing With Runs and HIIT
I can modestly say that I'm no record-breaking marathoner, but if the best in the world are trying it, and if science is confirming it, I'm willing to try out any weird-sounding trick. Mimicking the study, I first tried smiling through the pain on a few hot, hilly, 10-mile runs this Summer. Specifically, I used it when I hit a "here goes nothing" moment, like a steep incline or a long, shadeless stretch of sidewalk: something that seemed impossible or that I knew would be painful. These were the moments when I felt so crazy ("Why am I doing this to myself, again?") that I just had to smile, or almost laugh at myself. That made it feel genuine and weirdly empowering. It wasn't that that I suddenly knew I could conquer that hill, or even that I suddenly wanted to; it still felt impossible, and I definitely still wanted to stop. But it gave me a "throw caution to the wind" mentality that was enough to get started.
I tried grinning during the toughest moments of HIIT workouts- lunge jumps, squat jumps, burpees, and any other time I wanted collapse on the floor - and found the same result. It felt strange, because smiling was the last thing I wanted to do in those situations, but it also gave me an unexpected jolt of energy and confidence. I couldn't track my oxygen efficiency like in the study, but the workouts and runs just felt better: less work, but also more fun. And I'm a firm believer that the best workouts are the ones you'll stick to, and that the ones you'll stick to are the ones you enjoy.
I will say, it definitely feels awkward at first. If you don't feel like you can spontaneously sport a genuine smile mid-workout, try streaming a funny video on the treadmill, listening to a funny podcast or comedian, or smiling when a class instructor says something hilarious (or tells you to do something that seems hilariously impossible). Performance gains and efficiency are great results, and if smiling during a workout can also make it seem easier and more fun, then it might just be worth a try.
