Taraji P. Henson Isn't Taking a Penny Less Than She Deserves: "Honey, a Zero Is Missing"
The gender pay gap is excruciatingly unfair to women of color, and it's an unfortunate hurdle that affects even those at the top of their professions, including women in Hollywood. Taraji P. Henson - who has been in the game for over two decades - knows the struggle well and opened up about her experiences with pay negotiations in Net-a-Porter's digital magazine, The Edit. The Empire star's quotes about salary negotiations and no longer accepting less than her worth have vision-board potential. Seriously, they're that real.
"'Honey, a zero is missing. Tell them to go find it then call me back.'"
Of the pay discrepancy she faced while working on 2008's The Curious Case of Benjamin Button - Taraji was paid just $500,000 for her role, while costars Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett reportedly made tens of millions - Taraji talked about having to "bite that bullet" and use it as a reminder never to settle for less again. "I didn't even ask for one million. But I had to see the bigger picture and bite that bullet," she said. "I knew that if I kept my ego in check I would get the victory. That performance was undeniable. I turned in an Academy-worthy f*cking performance. And what did they say? 'We shoulda paid her.'" Taraji's performance as Queenie earned her an Oscar nomination, as well as the respect of her peers and critics.
Since then, Taraji has remained outspoken about the gender pay gap, and when it comes to her work, she isn't taking a penny less than what she deserves. "'They wanna pay what?'" she said of less-than-ideal studio offers. "'Honey, a zero is missing. Tell them to go find it then call me back.' If you come to Taraji P. Henson, you need to come with that money, because I earned it." Ayyye.
How many of us needed this reminder to stand up for ourselves and demand what we deserve? Women of color are often expected to work hard and accept whatever we get. We can shy away from asking for more for fear of seeming "angry" or "difficult," which makes it increasingly hard to remember our worth. But as more and more women of color are rising to positions of power, it's imperative that we don't shrink; that we continue to speak out and speak up for ourselves and others whose worth is not represented in their pay. In Taraji's words, let's tell them to "go find it," then call us back.
Is True Detective Season 3 Based on This Horrifying Murder Case?
We're only two episodes into the third season of True Detective, and already we've turned into internet sleuths and late-night investigators. We've been quickly introduced to a ton of information about the crime, its victims, and potential suspects. While many theories have already started to circulate about who the killer is, there have been claims the case is beginning to look a lot like the West Memphis Three murder that rocked a small town in Arkansas in the early '90s.
Keep reading for the rundown on that case and its possible influence on True Detective season three. Be warned that graphic details of the real crime are included ahead.
The Crime
In 1993, three boys in West Memphis, Arkansas were murdered. Steve Branch, Michael Moore, and Christopher Byers were reported missing on May 5, 1993 after they did not return home. The boys' bodies were found the next day near a canal in Robin Hood Hills. From the start, the police officers investigating the crime believed these murders were part of a Satanic cult ritual because of how the bodies were found. The boys' clothing had been removed, and they were tied up with their own shoelaces. Byers's body was particularly gruesome - he had multiple lacerations to his body and genitalia, as well as bite marks on his buttocks. It was revealed in the autopsy that Moore and Branch had injuries consistent with drowning.
Eighteen-year-old Damien Echols emerged as a primary suspect in the crime because he had been known to read books on the occult, he listened to heavy-metal music, and he wore black t-shirts. This was at a time when "Satanic Panic" was gripping the nation, so all this information about Echols was taken very seriously. His polygraph test revealed findings consistent with lying, and eventually Echols revealed to police officers that one of the victims had injuries to this genitalia, which quickly became incriminating evidence.
Echols's two friends, 17-year-old Jessie Misskelley Jr. and 16-year-old Jason Baldwin, were thought to be participants in the crime, too. These three teenagers later became known as the "West Memphis Three," and they were tried for the murders in 1994. All three were found guilty of murder and sentenced to jail.
The Aftermath
There was been a lot of controversy surrounding the West Memphis Three, and whether or not their convictions were based on false confessions, fabricated suspect information, and the mishandling of the crime scene. Furthermore, DNA from the crime scene was tested in 2007, and none of the findings tied the three men to the victims.
In 2011, the three men were released from prison as part of an Alford plea deal, which allowed the defendants to plead guilty while maintaining their innocence. Many films, songs, and books tackling the crime and its aftermath have since been released.
The True Detective Connection
The crime at the focus of the third season of True Detective has some stark parallels to the West Memphis Three crime. For one, both crimes take place in small Arkansas towns. Additionally, both crimes deal with the occult and contain some Satanic elements, as evidenced through the corn-husk doll found next to Will's body. When Will and Julie Purcell leave their house for the last time, three teenage boys in a purple Volkswagen Beetle cross paths with the two children while they're riding their bikes. After the children go missing, two of the teenagers, Freddy Burns (Rhys Wakefield) and Ryan Peters (Brandon Flynn) are questioned. Detectives Hays and West question Flynn abut his Black Sabbath t-shirt, and West flat out asks Flynn if the shirt is meant to be Satanic?
In terms of the convictions, there are some parallels there, as well. There are some allusions in True Detective that whoever was convicted of Will Purcell's murder might not be the actual killer(s). There's a timeline in which Detective Hays is answering questions about the crime and the suspects, and the investigators in the room with him reference the fact that the investigation is being reopened. At the time of the West Memphis Three trial, many residents of the town believed that two of the boys' stepfathers were not investigated enough, which hints at another suspect in True Detective.
While it's possible series writer Nic Pizzolatto drew inspiration from the West Memphis Three, it's likely more of a nod than an imitation. The parallels are obvious, but True Detective has never been one to reveal the killer so early on. If anything, Pizzolatto is just trying to throw viewers for a loop, while the real killer has yet to make his/her presence known.
Sparks Fly Between Emilia Clarke and Henry Golding in First Look at Their Holiday Rom-Com
It might be the start of a new year, but we're already feeling the holiday cheer thanks to Emilia Clarke and Henry Golding. In September, the two signed on to star in a Christmas-themed romance, Last Christmas. The film, set in London, will be directed by Paul Feig, whose previous work includes Bridesmaids, The Heat, Ghostbusters, and most recently, Golding's A Simple Favor. Other producers who will have a hand in the film are Jessie Henderson, David Livingstone, and Emma Thompson, the latter of whom also wrote the screenplay with the help of Bryony Kimmings. Actresses Rebecca Root, Thompson, and Michelle Yeoh will also star!
The film is expected to hit theaters on Nov. 15, and takes its name from Wham!'s hit single of the same name. "I'd met with George Michael. He was concerned about the homeless, which is a large part of this story," Thompson told The Daily Mail in January. "We spoke a lot about life and death, and there's a lot of that in this film as well." Although the movie won't be in the style of Broadway-musical-turned-big-screen-hit like Mamma Mia!, Thompson noted that the rom-com is "inspired by the songs and inspired by him."
As far as story goes, the film will take place in 2016, with Brexit and the election of Donald Trump in the background. "It's first and foremost a love story," Feig explained to The Daily Mail. "[It's] a chance to go against so much intolerance and see what a melting pot London, and the world, is." Clarke will play an elf working in a Christmas shop who is described as "not quite fully formed as an adult," while Tom (Golding) is "out of sync with the modern world," Golding told The Daily Mail. "I think he sees [Kate] as a bit of a lost soul and tries to bring her out of herself."
Some of the romantic (and chilly!) set photos have already given us a sneak peek at what to expect, but Golding also took it upon himself to share an official first-look photo of him and Clarke as their characters, Tom and Kate. "Mark my words, this one is going to be special," he captioned the Instagram post.
Clarke is known for playing the beloved Daenerys Targaryen in Game of Thrones, but now that the show is ending, it makes sense that she's looking to take on other projects. She recently portrayed Han Solo's childhood friend Qi'ra in Solo: A Star Wars Story, and it looks like she'll be expanding her acting repertoire with Last Christmas.
Golding is also doing rather well with breaking into the Hollywood scene. He's coming off a successful performance as Nick Young in Crazy Rich Asians, which was very well received. Golding also worked with Feig in the recent mystery thriller A Simple Favor as the character Sean Townsend.
As for Clarke and Golding's upcoming film, we're already wondering if it will be a little Love Actually-esque. It is a romance film that takes place in London around Christmas time, after all. And with Thompson, who played Karen in the first Love Actually film, as a screenwriter for the movie, there's sure to be a few similarities here and there. For now, we're just going to squeal in excitement over getting to see Clarke and Golding share the big screen together.
9 M. Night Shyamalan Movie Cameos That Made Us Groan Into Our Popcorn
Hello, welcome to my post about M. Night Shyamalan's way-too-extra cameos, which happen to occur in the vast majority of his films! Before we kick this off, I do want to say that I'm a casual Shyamalan fan. Loved The Sixth Sense. Enjoyed Signs. Loved The Visit. Split was shaky, but I think it did a pretty good job. It's true, the director has a hit-and-miss track record, but when he nails it, I think he really nails it. But I simply cannot deal with the cameos.
Why, Shyamalan, why?! I know it happens here and there in Hollywood, and not just in Shyamalan films. There's definitely a history of cameos, and even director cameos, in the canon. I mean, Hitchcock was notorious for appearing in his films. And yes, we can always expect a Stan Lee cameo in a Marvel film, but he's a f*cking legend who has a brilliant legacy. (Plus, not to split hairs, but he'd never directed the Marvel films in question.) Some people, like Bradley Cooper, direct and star in their own films, which I would argue is an entirely different beast. You know, because you see them the whole time and there's not a moment in which you're like, "Hey, isn't that the director?"
When it comes to cameos, though, I do think there's an art to it. A director cameo is a delicate balance. You want people to notice you if they're really paying attention, but it shouldn't be so overt that it's distracting. It shouldn't pull you out of the moment. Reader, I'm here to tell you that nearly every Shyamalan cameo pulls me out of the moment. His cameo in Glass elicited audible groans in my theater. It's not good. As such, I thought it pertinent to discuss some of his most slap-you-across-the-face cameos, from quite subtle to painfully overt.
LOL! Michael Bublé Runs Into Modern Family's Eric Stonestreet During a Prank on the Ellen Show
Michael Bublé and Ellen DeGeneres had a master plan to prank unsuspecting customers at a local grocery store during Friday's episode of The Ellen DeGeneres Show. The goal was to help promote Bubly sparkling water while Michael pretended to be a cashier as Ellen secretly told him what to do and say through an earpiece. But they definitely didn't expect the prank to turn into a celebrity meet-and-greet.
That's precisely what happened when actor Eric Stonestreet appeared in line to make a purchase. After Michael asked him if he's "the guy from Modern Family," Eric looked a bit suspicious (probably wondering if this random cashier is actually THE Michael Bublé). "I smell something awry at my Handy Market," Eric said, smiling and looking around. Watch the two stars enter the celebrity grocery store version of The Twilight Zone before the prank is revealed in the clip above!
Totally Perplexed by the Ending of Glass? Here's a Basic Rundown of How Things End Up
Warning: this post contains MASSIVE spoilers for the latest M. Night Shyamalan movie, Glass!
After 20 years, we're finally getting the conclusion to the trilogy we barely knew existed until, like, two years ago. Glass marks the third (and supposedly final) installment in M. Night Shyamalan's dialed-down superhero universe, coming nearly 20 years after 2000's Unbreakable. Unfortunately, Glass does not provide closure on the whole affair. Rather, it cracks open a whole world of possibilities that, to be frank, have left us scratching our heads. In order to help you piece together what exactly goes down at the end of the film, we're going to give our best shot at making sense of the superhuman mess in Glass.
The Basics
OK, so you know the basic concept of the film, right? I'll give a hilariously brief summary. On one end, we have David Dunn, our low-key "Superman" who has become a neighborhood vigilante of sorts, taking out petty criminals with the help of his grown-up son, Joseph. Then we have Kevin Crumb, aka "The Horde," on the other end; he's already kidnapped a new group of cheerleaders, whom he fully intends on mutilating. After a huge showdown and a police standoff, both parties end up in a psychiatric hospital . . . with none other than Elijah "Mr. Glass" Price, who is basically a vegetable.
We then meet Dr. Ellie Staple, who believes that none of these men have superhuman abilities. During their stay at the hospital, she hopes to "help them" by convincing them that they are not superheroes and masterminds, but instead ordinary men. She seems to have a plausible explanation for every astounding feat they've demonstrated. This brings us to our showdown.
The Thrilling Climax
I mean, if you're going to put a "beast," a "Superman," and a "mastermind" all under the same roof, you know sh*t's going to go down at some point, right? Basically, Elijah engineers an escape with his brilliant mind, and he takes Kevin with him. He's determined to expose his abilities to the world and bring superheroes into the light. In the process, he reignites David's strength and resolve and David breaks out of his own room.
Cue an epic fight right out front of the hospital. It's super strength vs. super crazy, and Kevin and David are quite the even match. Even when the SWAT team shows up, they're basically quickly brushed aside by the two superhumans. David's son arrives to reveal the first twist: that Kevin's dad died in that fateful train derailment that was engineered by Elijah.
Kevin deals deathly blows to Elijah's fragile body, and then Casey shows up to calm him down . . . only to have a sniper shoot him and take him out. Meanwhile, David gets drowned in a puddle. (I wish I was joking, but yeah.) It's at this point that we get another crazy twist: Ellie Staple isn't who she pretends to be.
The Strange "Collective"
Cue the bizarre three-leaf clover tattoo reveal, which signifies that Ellie is part of a strange organization that hates superheroes. Using his "sixth sense" (ha!), David touches Ellie and sees a strange dining scene in a fancy restaurant. It's clear it's one big malicious group. The SWAT officer who drowns David also has a clover. It's a cover-up! They were superheroes the whole time, and this ominous organization sent Ellie to try to tamp them down. They don't want superheroes to awaken. They like everything as it is.
I should note that there is no further explanation on this group. We don't know who they are, what their ultimate goal is, and why they want things this way. We only know that they exist, they mark themselves with clover tattoos, and they love to conduct meetings in very public restaurants.
Since Ellie can't successfully convince the men that they aren't superheroes, she kills them instead. She inexplicably goes to another restaurant, where the same group seems to be having collective brunch, and she announces that her mission was successful. Except it wasn't.
The Final Twist
Elijah, it turns out, had anticipated everything. To thwart the cover-up, he found a way to patch the psychiatric hospital's hundreds of cameras into some kind of permanent, recorded feed. This video was sent to those who would feasibly carry on the legacy of each main character: David's son (Joseph), Kevin's sole survivor (Casey), and Elijah's mother. These three blast the video files out in the world, proving that superhumans with special powers do, indeed, exist.
The late Elijah seems to believe that this irrefutable proof could awaken the powers of individuals all across the nation. And so, at the end of the movie, a new era begins: one in which the world is filled with superheroes. As I said before, it's hardly a conclusion at all. It feels much more like a prequel to another trilogy. But Shyamalan insists there won't be more movies. For the sake of this whole hot mess, let's hope he means it.

How to Fry French Fries With Only 1 Teaspoon of Oil
I'm a fairly new owner of a Philips Airfryer (bacon that is simultaneously crispy and chewy is my specialty), and I had heard mixed reviews about making french fries in the trendy kitchen gadget. However, I had to know if the airfryer could possibly yield deliciously crisp, fresh french fries or if I'm destined to live off of frozen fries for the rest of my life. It turns out that airfryer french fries (which are made with only one teaspoon of oil) may be even better than deep-fried ones, but there are a few secrets you must abide by so you have a perfect batch every time.

A Step-by-Step Guide For Packing the KonMari Way
Before I completed Marie Kondo's KonMari Method of tidying up, I loathed packing for vacation. So much so, I would typically wait until 30 minutes before leaving for the airport to shove everything in a bag and fingers crossed, I would remember my toothbrush. But now that I am a convert for this organizational method, I've applied the same minimalist principles to my packing, and I'm never looking back. Here are some of the key takeaways so you too can pack joyfully.
Start with a suitcase that sparks joy.
During my tidying process, my parents actually got rid of my suitcases accidentally, but I took the opportunity to invest in a new set of ultra-lightweight, rolling suitcases in my favorite color: teal. Before I start packing, I unzip the bag, lay it flat on the floor, and check all pockets for possible remnants from the previous trip (usually cell phone chargers, etc.).
Fold your clothes the KonMari way.
Most of us learned to fold our clothes into thin rectangles and stack the items on top of one another vertically. The problem with this method is you always end up rummaging around your drawer (or in this case suitcase) looking for an item and leaving the whole thing a tangled wreck. Marie Kondo suggests rolling clothes in sort of a triangle shape that stands upright by itself. The clothes are then placed side-by-side horizontally, hugging one another. This makes it so that you can see every single item you own.
This is especially helpful when packing, because you can quickly see if you've forgotten something essential, i.e. underwear. When traveling, gone are the days you have to unload your whole suitcase to find that dang pair of PJs that found its way to the bottom of your bag. When packing, I go the extra mile and refold the clothes so they fit my suitcase perfectly. Then, I lay everything out on my bed (or the floor) until it's time to transfer to the suitcase.
Pull out shoes and accessories.
The KonMari Method is about asking yourself, "What sparks joy?" but when it comes to traveling, I ask myself, "What do I really, really need?" Oftentimes I'll end up putting away a couple of pairs of miscellaneous shoes or dresses and paring down to the bare minimum essentials, so I can zipper my suitcase without the expansion. That way, I know I have some room to spare to pack souvenirs during my trip.
Save toiletries for last.
I leave a hole in the suitcase for my toiletry bag. Meanwhile, I gather my essential toiletries and keep them in plain view on a bathroom counter so I can use them until the last minute. Placing all of the items in a horizontal row (like your clothes) also helps you do a mental checklist before packing them away.
Now that you're all packed up, remember to keep things tidy as you travel! I stash my dirty clothes (still folded) on one side of my bag away from the clean. For whatever reason, this also helps make unpacking a lot easier. You can toss all the dirty clothes in a hamper while transferring the clean, folded clothes back to your drawers.
Here's my list for a weekend trip (as pictured):
- 3 shirts
- 2 shorts
- 3 workout outfits
- 1 sweatshirt
- 1 dress
- 1 jacket (I wear when traveling)
- 3 pairs of underwear
- 1 swimsuit
- 3 pairs of socks
- 1 pair of tennis shoes
- 1 pair of sandals
- 1 pair of wedges/heels
- 1 bag of toiletries
- 1 hat
- 1 pair of sunglasses

If You Haven't Heard, 2019 Is the Year We'll All Be Drinking Matcha
Matcha has gone mainstream, and as an everyday consumer, I couldn't be more thrilled. Matcha is essentially a much more concentrated form of green tea, aka it's got a lot more caffeine per cup. The taste is a little earthy, but paired with your favorite milk, it's seriously delicious; so good, in fact, that I don't like to start my morning without it. But 2019 is the year that matcha goes from "that green drink" to a staple in every health-conscious person's pantry, and it's not just for drinking. Just keep reading to shop our favorite matcha products that will have keep calm and energized well into 2019.

Cheese-Lovers, Here's All the Dairy You Can Eat on the Keto Diet
Over the last year, the keto diet has skyrocketed in popularity, probably for one very distinct reason: it encourages you to eat fatty foods. The only major caveat is that you have to keep your carb intake low. Offsetting this often-difficult task, however, is the keto diet's allowance of another beloved food group: dairy. Most cheeses are low in carbs, making them perfectly acceptable for the keto meal plan. The same goes for fatty dairy foods like butter and heavy cream, which almost seems too good to be true. A diet that gives you the thumbs-up when you eat butter? It's not hard to see how it caught on and spread like wildfire.
Although you won't be able to enjoy the glorious combination that is cheese and bread (bye-bye, buttered toast and bagels with cream cheese) if you've gone keto, you'll still be able to indulge in plenty of decadent recipes. Click through to see which dairy products you can eat on the keto diet, along with some keto-friendly recipe ideas.
Poetry and Working Out? Yeah, They Go Together.
"We are strong. We are courageous. We are empowered." Every piece from Alala's limited-edition capsule collection with poet Alison Malee features this mantra. The products, launched on Jan. 15, are all about sisterhood and self-love.
"What is so exciting about this collaboration is that I actually wrote a piece for them as a mantra, as a start to the new year," Alison, who published her poetry collection The Day Is Ready For You last April, announced on her Instagram. "Regardless of what you order . . . you will have a tag that has the full poem on it so that you know the inspiration behind the phrase on your product."
Alison told POPSUGAR, "When Alala reached out originally, we both had a strong desire to create something hopeful that was rooted in strength and bravery as we enter into this new year, and in turn, this new chapter of our lives." She added, "I hope that when women wear these products they feel renewed, they feel powerful, they feel acknowledged and accepted."
The collection is made up of three pieces: a hoodie, tank, and tote.
"Since the collection launch, a lot of women have also shared amazing stories about sisterhood and what it means to them," Alala founder Denise Lee told us. "This has meant so much to us, as a brand that has always dedicated itself to celebrating strong women."

Ali Wong Hilariously Re-Created Katelyn Ohashi's Viral Gymnastics Routine, and You'll LOL
The minute I finished watching Katelyn Ohashi's latest viral gymnastics routine, I thought, "Wow, can you imagine being able to do that?" We might not all possess the same talents, but Ali Wong was willing to take a stab at it. The comedian re-created Katelyn's perfect-10 routine in her own home, and it's hilariously terrible (and relatable). Wearing a long-sleeved shirt, glasses, and no pants, Ali attempted every twist and tumble, complete with the music from the choreography. Her husband seemed entirely unfazed by the performance, which made it even funnier. Watch the brilliant "tribute" above, then watch Katelyn's awe-inspiring Michael Jackson routine if you haven't yet.
I Ate 1 Avocado Every Day For 2 Weeks to See If It'd Help Me Lose Weight, and Here's What Happened
As a plant-based eater, I'll admit that my high-carb diet (that absolutely includes tons of sweet potatoes, whole grains, and dates), gives me energy for my explosive CrossFit workouts, but I end up feeling hungry soon after eating. Then I end up eating more, which has resulted in about a 10-pound weight gain over the past year or so. And no, it wasn't muscle.
Many experts suggest including healthy fats in your diet to help you feel more satiated, so you eat less. Would this work for me? Registered dietitian Leslie Langevin, MS, RD, CD, of Whole Health Nutrition told POPSUGAR that healthy fats are essential for weight loss because they "keep us full and satisfied since they are digested slower than carbohydrates." Avocados are one of the foods she recommends clients include to help with weight loss.
My Avocado Experiment
I was used to eating half an avocado a few times a week, but I thought: what if I ate one whole avocado every single day? How would I feel? Would it keep me fuller longer? Would I end up eating fewer daily calories? Would I lose weight? Or, because they're high in calories, would I gain weight? I got out my pink Himalayan sea salt, a sharp knife, and a spoon, and was ready to see what would happen.

If You Didn't Get the HPV Vaccine Before Age 26, You May Be Eligible to Get It Now
Update, Jan 18, 2019: Findings published in the Journal of Infectious Diseases found that only 16 percent of adolescents in the U.S. have been fully vaccinated against HPV by the time they turn 13, even though the national recommendations are for pre-teens aged 11 and 12 to get the vaccine.
Original post: The HPV vaccine can help prevent complications and diseases associated with the human papillomavirus including genital warts, cervical cancer, and cancers of the vulva, anus, penis, and parts of the throat. But while the CDC recommends kids and preteens (boys and girls) get the vaccination to prevent HPV infections, the FDA has now approved Gardasil 9 for a wider range of people: males and females ages 9 to 45.
Previously, Gardasil 9 was only FDA-approved for ages 9 to 26. The vaccine, as the name suggests, protects against nine strains of the human papillomavirus. The previous iteration of the vaccine, which was just called Gardasil and approved by the FDA in 2006, only covered four of the strains of HPV. It's no longer distributed in the US. Now, not only are more people eligible to be protected from the dangers of HPV, but also more strains of it.
"Today's approval represents an important opportunity to help prevent HPV-related diseases and cancers in a broader age range," Peter Marks, M.D., Ph.D., director of the FDA's Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research, said in an official FDA press release on Oct. 5. "The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has stated that HPV vaccination prior to becoming infected with the HPV types covered by the vaccine has the potential to prevent more than 90 percent of these cancers, or 31,200 cases every year, from ever developing."
According to the CDC, 14 million Americans are infected with HPV every year. Additionally, 12,00 women are diagnosed with, and 4,000 women die from, cervical cancer caused by certain strains of HPV annually.
If you never got the HPV vaccine and currently fall within the new age range, you should consider getting Gardasil 9 to protect against potentially harmful cancers and complications. Talk to your doctor to see if Gardasil 9 is a good option for you.

We Asked a Trainer How Often You'd Need to Walk to Lose Weight, and Her Answer Is Surprising
If you're new to working out, it's entirely possible for you to burn fat and lose weight simply by walking. But just how often would you need to walk to get there? That's the question we posed to Anna Victoria, a NASM-certified personal trainer and creator of the Body Love app.
"I would say that about 30 minutes three times a week is a good amount to walk in order to see progress," Anna said. "What you want to do is to get your heart rate within the LISS (or low-intensity steady state) range." LISS cardio is cardio that's performed at a lower intensity but for a longer period of time, and it's known to help jump-start weight loss.
So, how can you ensure you're in that zone? For LISS cardio, you should be able to talk while you walk, Anna explained. If you're going so fast that you can't hold a conversation, you're doing more intense cardio. On a treadmill, that's around 3.8 to 4 mph.
Once you're ready to pick up the pace, Anna suggested trying intervals. Instead of walking longer, increase the intensity. Use those 30 minutes to do LISS for one minute, then light jogging for one minute, and so on.
Of course, nutrition is also key if you want to see results. "You can't work off a bad diet, especially with just walking," Anna said. Cut back on processed foods and those that are high in sugar, and eat a balanced diet of lean protein, good carbs, and healthy fats. "As long as you're doing that, then you should be able to see progress," she said.

A Trainer Says This Is How Many Days a Week You Need to Do HIIT to Lose Weight
Fitness trainers and dietitians agree that the key to losing weight isn't just about exercising hard to burn calories. Registered dietitian Leslie Langevin, MS, RD, CD, of Whole Health Nutrition, said that a big chunk of weight-loss success has to do with your diet. David Chesworth, an ACSM-certified personal trainer and wellness coach at Hilton Head Health, agrees and told POPSUGAR that the right nutrition plan is key, adding that a combination of High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) and diet can help with weight loss (especially with reducing belly fat).
HIIT involves short intervals done at almost your max effort, followed by longer, slower recovery periods or rest. The secret to HIIT is in how hard you work during your intense intervals. Your goal is to work out at 90 percent of your max, which trains your body to work in anaerobic mode, which helps you become more efficient at producing and using energy. The result? Your body's fat-burning potential increases, and the pounds melt away. Boom!
So HIIT is where it's at when it comes to getting lean, but how often do you need to do it to see results? ACE-certified fitness trainer John Kersbergen said, "The most efficient way to get results is to do some form of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) for a total-body workout and to focus on strength training certain body parts (upper body, lower body, core) on different days of the week." And no need to suffer for hours at the gym. John said, "The whole workout including warmup doesn't need to be more than 45 minutes to be effective." And three to four times a week is enough. That's totally doable, right?
If you can't do a whole 45-minute session, break it up throughout the day or aim for shorter workouts more often in the week. Keep reading for some HIIT workouts to get you started.
I'm a Trainer, and This Is the Exercise You Need to Do to Transform Your Core Strength
There's nothing like a good exercise that will fire up your abdominal muscles. One of my favorite moves that happens to be very back friendly is the farmer's carry. It looks super easy, but trust me, it is really going to ignite your core.
This is a great move to add to your workouts, and if done consistently, you'll really notice a transformation in your core strength.
How to Do a Farmer's Carry
- Start standing with a 10-pound dumbbell in each hand; if this is too heavy or too light, feel free to adjust the weight. Make sure your bodyweight is evenly distributed on each foot, your spine is in a neutral position, and your shoulders are back and open.
- With your arms extended, hold the dumbbells about four inches away from your legs; this will activate your abdominal muscles. Begin to walk forward, maintaining a neutral spine and keeping your shoulders up and open.
- Walk 10 steps forward, then turn around and walk for 10 more steps.
If You've Been Caught Off Guard by Gym Cleavage, You Need a High-Neck Tank Top
Cleavage at the gym is a real issue that we don't think is discussed enough. We're of the mind that you should wear whatever you feel comfortable in. However, sometimes, when we're in classic scoop-neck tanks, we do a double take in the mirror, then spend the rest of our workout trying to adjust ourselves so we don't show too much. Thankfully, there are plenty of high-neck options available, so that's one more gym-related worry we can cross off our list. Keep reading to shop our 12 favorite styles.

I Worked Out With a Trainer For 30 Days, and Honestly, It Changed My Life
If there's a group fitness studio or innovative exercise class in New York City, I've tried it. Likely more than once. I much prefer workout classes to planning my own regimen - which, if I'm being honest, might mean playing on my phone at the gym instead of actually lifting weights.
I've taken everything from HIIT to aqua cycling, but as many times as I've stepped up to a barre or snapped my cycling shoes into a stationary bike, I had never tried personal training - that is, until recently. Curious what it would be like to work out one-on-one instead of alongside 50 other people, I decided to shake up my routine.
For 30 days, I trained at PERFORMIX House, an exclusive, full-service gym and creative studio in Manhattan. My one-hour sessions were guided by two of its founding trainers, Meghan Hayden and Gabe Snow. I thought I'd simply gain some muscle, learn some new moves, and check out a cool new gym (I did). But I took more away from the experience than I could have imagined. Here are the changes I've noticed along the way.
An Expert Explains Why Cardio Isn't Your Best Choice If You're Trying to Lose Fat
When it comes to exercise, there isn't one best way to lose fat. In general, to reduce body fat, most experts recommend a balance of cardio and strength training along with proper nutrition. To find out the benefits of cardio for fat loss and whether or not it actually burns body fat, POPSUGAR spoke with Rondel King, MS, CSCS, an exercise physiologist at NYU Langone's Sports Performance Center.
The Pros and Cons of Cardio For Fat Loss
A 2016 study published in the Journal of Internal Medicine reported that cardiovascular forms of exercise like walking, swimming, cycling, and stair climbing reduced type 2 diabetes, some cancers, falls, osteoporotic fractures, and depression. They also found that there was an improvement in physical function, weight management, cognitive function, and enhancement of the quality of life. Overall, cardio is good for your health; however, when it comes to fat loss, it may not be your best option.
"If you're continuously doing long, drawn-out cardio and you're trying to lose weight, than that could be counterproductive because that may be catabolic to your overall system," Rondel told POPSUGAR. Catabolic is the process of muscle tissue breaking down. He explained that too much of this type of cardio will cause an increase in stress hormones, such as cortisol, which are "very catabolic in nature" and do not promote tissue growth to an extent. "It can help you lose weight but also cause you to lose muscle mass," he said.
Better Ways to Burn Fat
Cardio can help you burn fat, but as Rondel stated, you'll more than likely lose muscle mass. To prevent that from occurring, Rondel recommended high-intensity interval training (HIIT) because, "It gives you a hormonal response that's conducive to muscle growth, and it's more anabolic - where you're developing tissue, muscles, collagen, cartilage, things of that nature," he said. HIIT also "produces precursors to things like testosterone and growth hormone and things that will potentially help you increase your lean muscle mass," he explained.
Strength training is also imperative in order to lose body fat and build muscle. According to Rondel, your strength sessions should incorporate compound exercises because they require more energy to perform and burn more calories and fat. Your workouts should also focus on muscle hypertrophy (maximal muscle growth) where you perform three to five sets of 12 to 15 reps per exercise. On average, Rondel said you should strength train a minimum of two to three times a week. If you aren't sure where to begin when it comes to strength training, start with this four-week program.
Some people may notice a change in their physique from steady-state cardio and some will not. At the end of the day, Rondel said, "There's a lot of variability, we're all different, and our bodies will respond differently to these hormonal responses."
These Gymnasts' Floor Routines Are So Good, We Can't Stop Watching
Last April, UCLA won its seventh NCAA Women's Gymnastics Championship, but not before a floor routine from one of its student-athletes went viral. The theme was Michael Jackson. The gymnast's name? Katelyn Ohashi. (And yes, she even did the moonwalk.)
In the Bruins' Jan. 12 meet against California, UC Davis, and Michigan State, Katelyn took the internet by storm with a new routine that earned her a perfect 10. This year, the senior dances to a mashup of classics like "September" by Earth, Wind & Fire and Tina Turner's "Proud Mary." Not to mention, she does the moonwalk yet again.
If you loved her dynamic routines, we're bringing you more electric performances from college gymnasts across the country. These women remind us that competition, especially in a sport as intense and dangerous as gymnastics, can actually be fun.
Packed with skill, good music, and lots of fearless attitude, these are a must see.

The Killers Release Their Protest Anthem "Land of the Free" With a Spike Lee-Directed Video
Normally, one doesn't associate The Killers with politics, but the band is switching things up. Their recent single, "Land of the Free," was released on Monday, Jan. 14, and focuses on President Donald Trump's proposed border wall, along with racism and gun violence. The poignant short film accompanying the track was directed by BlacKkKlansman's Spike Lee, who explained that The Killers' frontman Brandon Flowers reached out to him after seeing the film. "[Brandon Flowers] called me up," he told The Hollywood Reporter. "It's a great protest song. He said, 'What can you do with this?'"
The video documents families at the US-Mexico border as they attempt to make their way into the "Land of the Free" before they're tear-gassed by border agents. Flowers sings about families who "just want the things we do" and how "if you're the wrong color of skin, you grow up looking over both your shoulders," pointedly addressing the human rights that have always been divisive subjects in the US
In an interview with Beats 1 host Zane Lowe, Flowers revealed that he began writing the song after the 2012 shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School. ". . . then it just started stacking up. It was things like Eric Garner, Trayvon Martin, things like what's happening at the wall. You know this stuff just didn't seem to be in harmony with the values that I believe my country was founded on," the singer explained. "I would start the song and then I would put it away and say, 'I'm not the guy to do this.' Or I would feel inadequate . . . I finally just, you know, Las Vegas, Orlando, Parkland, and it just kept coming. It was just like I've gotta, have to get this out." Watch the short film for "Land of the Free" above and you'll be glad he did.
