Why This Controversial Organizing Method Is Exactly What You Need

Letting go of clutter is hard to do. Anyone who has encountered the teachings of Japanese cleaning guru Marie Kondo knows that minimalism is currently all the rage; her housekeeping manual, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up, has inspired legions of readers to throw away their unneeded belongings. And now her Netflix series, Tidying Up, is ushering in a new wave of devotees. We love all things related to organization and have to admit to clearing out our drawers and closets in a fit of aspirational tidying ourselves.

Not everyone, though, is on board with KonMari, the nickname Kondo gave her techniques. As with any good trend, there's a corresponding backlash. A writer for The New York Times extolled the virtues of living a life surrounded by things in an article called "Let's Celebrate the Art of Clutter." Plus, her stance on ridding your home of books that don't "spark joy" has had book-lovers up in arms.

Whether you're pro- or anticlutter, you must admit there's a certain calmness to be found in a well-organized drawer. Read through to see aspirational examples of Marie's method at work, and see if you aren't a little inspired to take a turn at organizing your own home.

Martha Stewart's Hack to Scramble Eggs in a Cappuccino Machine Has the Internet in a Frenzy

When it comes to cooking tips, it's safe to say we'd trust almost anything Martha Stewart recommends, but a recent scrambled eggs hack is raising a few eyebrows across the internet. Last month, Martha linked up with the Food Network, where they collaborated on a video revealing an unexpected way to steam eggs: in a cappuccino machine! We're all about fluffy, scrambled eggs, but that typically occurs on a stovetop, right? Wrong! "These eggs are buttery and fluffy and light and delicious," Martha said after steaming the eggs in the coffee maker.

One POPSUGAR editor noted that she's tried eggs cooked in this unconventional way before, and they're "so, so good." Martha's always taking us out of our comfort zone in the kitchen, but it looks like she learned this tip from famed chef Jody Williams when she appeared on Martha's show in November 2011. Genius!

The comments on Food Network's video post immediately poured in, questioning, "and who's going to clean the frother?????" Others joked over future random cooking hacks: "Next up: How to cook a brisket in your dishwasher," one person wrote. Would you try steaming your eggs in a cappuccino machine?

We Asked Experts What the Best Exercises For Fat-Burning Are - Here's What They Said

We'd be lying if we said there was one ultimate exercise that would help you burn fat and build muscle. But after speaking to two experts for tips on burning fat and building muscle, two words kept coming up: compound exercises. Compound exercises are multijoint movements like squats and deadlifts that work groups of large muscle. Because they elicit a greater energy expenditure compared to smaller, isolated movements like the bicep curl, your body will burn more calories and fat.

Nutrition is also important in order to change your body composition, but when it comes to exercise specifically, Pratik Patel, MS, RD, CSSD, CSCS, director of performance nutrition and assistant strength and conditioning coach for the New York Giants, told POPSUGAR to do "movements that recruit more groups of large muscle mass," aka compound exercises, to get a greater burn.

Rondel King, MS, CSCS, an exercise physiologist at NYU Langone's Sports Performance Center, told POPSUGAR that in order to build more muscle, you must first make sure your workouts focus on muscle hypertrophy (maximal muscle growth). Here is the hypertrophy format checklist: your rep and set scheme should be between three and five sets of 12 and 15 reps for every exercise in your program. According to Rondel, "You can also do heavy lifting . . . like compound lifts, [such as] squats and deadlifts, where you can do a little more weight" to burn fat and build muscle.

Now that you know why compound exercises are integral to lowering your body fat percentage and increasing your muscle mass, here's a list of exercises you can create a workout from. Be sure not to do them all at once - you'll be extremely sore and in the gym all day. If you aren't sure how to create your own workout, here's a strength-training workout to get you started.

Too Cold to Walk Outside? Do This 20-Minute Calorie-Burning Treadmill Workout Instead

If you think you need to sign up for pricey boutique fitness classes or do sprints on the treadmill to get in shape and lose weight, we have some good news. You can burn calories, slim down, and improve your endurance simply from walking. Don't believe us? Just check out the stories of Kim, who lost 100 pounds simply from walking, or Natalie, who lost 75 pounds by going for walks in the evening.

If you're a true beginner, lacing up your walking shoes is the first step (pun intended). The second step is hopping on a treadmill and getting to work. Try this treadmill walking workout created by Alexis Craig, an NASM-certified personal trainer and a coach at the live fitness app Gixo (which includes a variety of walking classes). This 20-minute cardio session is based off how intense the workout feels to you on the Rate of Perceived Exertion (RPE) scale, from one to 10 - 10 being your absolute pick-me-up-off-the-floor max. Although there are ranges for speed and incline provided below, it's best to pay attention to how each interval feels for your body.

As you continue to walk and improve your strength and endurance, you can increase both your speed and your incline so it still feels like a challenge. "This walking workout involves skill building the walking gait and adds intensity to one variable at a time before the peak of the workout," Alexis said. "It also includes a warmup and cooldown so that you can make the most of your walking workout with a lower risk of injury."

To get in a good walking workout, Alexis said it's also important to focus on form. She said to land on the balls of your feet with each step, pushing off the back foot. "This seems very weird to a lot of people because they are used to walking with a heel strike," she told POPSUGAR. "Heel striking leads to hyperextension of the knee and can cause a chain reaction to all kinds of injuries, so really try to lift up your front knee and land on the ball of your foot as much as you can, using your arms and breathing in cadence with your steps."

Looking for a new walking workout? Save this one and take it with you to the gym.

This Is Why Your Metabolism Slows Down With Age - Here's What You Can Do About It

Aging is inevitable, and with it comes a lot of changes to our bodies. One of the biggest changes that takes place deals with our metabolism. Metabolism gets a lot of buzz, especially if you're trying to boost it, but have you ever wondered what happens to your metabolism as you get older? To answer this question, POPSUGAR spoke with Avigdor Arad, PhD, RDN, CDE, director of the Mount Sinai Physiolab.

Before going any further, we want to make sure you understand what your metabolism actually is and why it's important. Your metabolism is a complex process that relates to how your body processes energy from fat, sugar, and protein and how it stores that energy. When people talk about their metabolism, they really mean their metabolic rate - the amount of energy, more commonly known as calories, you burn in a day.

Although it is possible to boost your metabolism, "As you age, you lose muscle and that's the mechanism that seems to explain why there is a reduction in energy expenditure on the metabolic rate," Dr. Arad told POPSUGAR. With age, women will experience a reduction of estrogen (caused by menopause) and men will see a reduction in testosterone, which can lead to a higher fat mass and lower muscle mass.

"As you age, you lose muscle and muscle is a very active tissue. When you have less muscle and more fat, it translates to less energy," Dr. Arad explained. Ultimately, how much your metabolism slows with age "really comes down to how much muscle and how much fat you have," he said.

According to Dr. Arad, people over 65 years old tend to burn up to 30 percent less compared to in their 20s because of a reduction of muscle. To prevent a drastic decrease in your metabolic rate as you age, Dr. Arad recommends doing a combination of cardio and weight training to preserve your muscle mass. Staying active will also ensure you can maintain your independence, it will keep you strong and prevent falling, and it will also preserve your energy expenditure/energy level, he said.

Other ways to speed up your metabolism are by eating more protein and healthy fats because they have a higher thermic effect and it's harder for your body to digest and store them. Dr. Arad also advised reducing your sugar intake because sugar-rich foods have a lower thermic effect and require less energy to process. Finally, as mentioned before, strength training will increase your muscle mass and as a result, your metabolic rate. Here's a four-week weightlifting plan to get you started.

Getting Rid of Belly Fat Is Harder Than You Think - Here's How to Do It

I have this fantasy where I eat pizza and Salt & Straw Chocolate Gooey Brownie for every meal but also have abs. I'm not talking, like, a six-pack, but just some nice abdominal definition. (You'd think I'd go all out since this is a fantasy version of myself, but IDK. I'm sure there's something to unpack there.)

While there are probably some people who actually can munch on pizza all the time and somehow manage to look like one of the Amazon warriors from Wonder Woman, that's just not the case for most of us. That's because belly fat is notoriously difficult to get rid of, and lower belly fat can be particularly frustrating. Sometimes I feel like no matter how clean I eat or how many crunches I do, that fat at the lower end of my abdomen just isn't going to go away. Unfortunately, there's no way to spot-reduce fat from certain areas - but there are some diet and exercise changes you can make to help reduce fat overall.

I consulted Josh Gallegos, trainer to WWE superstars, and Whitney English, MS, RDN, CPT of Whitney E. RD. Here are their best tips for reducing lower belly fat. And no, crunches are not on the agenda.

Doing Abs After Your Workout Is a No-No - Here's When You Should Actually Train Them

You've probably been taught that before starting a workout, you should warm up by rolling out and doing a few dynamic exercises, and then jump into your workout. I hate to break it to you, but there's an important piece that's being left out of your warmup: activating your core.

You've probably heard "activate your core" hundreds of times in yoga and HIIT classes alike. Your instructors aren't just telling you to do this to impress you. They're saying it because our abdominal muscles play an integral role in movements like getting out of bed, walking, running, and picking things up. Continue reading to find out more about the anatomy of the core and why it's important to activate your abdominal muscles before working out.

Why Your Ab Muscles Are So Important

Your abdominal muscles are made up of your external obliques, internal obliques, transversus abdominis, and rectus abdominis. These muscles form a wall protecting your internal organs and help support the muscles of your spine, allowing you to maintain an erect posture. Your oblique muscles are responsible for side flexion and rotation of your torso, whereas your transverse abdominis muscles are responsible for the stabilization of the lumbar spine and pelvis before upper- and lower-body movements happen. The rectus abdominis muscle, commonly referred to as your six-pack, is an important postural muscle. The abdominal muscles also help with essential tasks like breathing and are turned on when we sneeze, cough, have bowel movements, and give birth. Long story short, your abdominal muscles play an important role in everyday life.

What Activating Your Core Means

The phrase "activate your core" gets thrown around a lot, but what does it really mean and why is it important to do? Core activation simply means using your abdominal muscles to help you perform a series of movements. As you now know, every movement we make, whether it's doing medicine ball slams or sprinting, requires using your core muscles. When your core muscles aren't activated, your form suffers and you increase your risk of injuries.

Take a barbell squat, for example. It's a lower-body exercise that targets your gluteus maximus, quadriceps, and thighs. The movement requires lower-body strength, but without an activated and engaged core, your torso wouldn't be stabilized and you wouldn't be able to hold the weight. Your core is engaged when you lift the weight, lower down into your squat, and stand back up. Without core activation to stabilize your spine, you would more than likely be using your back instead of your legs and glutes to move the weight, which isn't good. By "turning on" your abdominal muscles, not only will you be strengthening your core, but you'll be able to perform exercises more efficiently and with correct form.

How to Activate Your Core

Now that you understand what your abdominal muscles consist of and what activating your core means, it's time to learn how to get your core firing. Before a workout, specifically weightlifting and speed workouts, I lead my clients through a dynamic warmup to get their muscles ready for the load and intensity that awaits them. Once they've completed their drills, they do the following core-activating exercises:

I have them perform these exercises because they're antirotational (unlike bicycle crunches) and help stabilize the spine. Once they've gone through the core activation exercises, they're ready to workout. These movements alone will suffice as a great ab workout, but that doesn't mean you can't implement more exercises like mountain climbers into your workout.

Which Should You Do First, Cardio or Weights? Here's What Fitness Trainers Say

My workouts have basically been the same since I started going to the gym in high school: I do cardio for about 30 minutes, then I hit the weight room for 30 minutes. In college, that was bumped up to an hour of cardio followed by an hour of lifting (which was not very healthy, and I do not recommend it!), but my timing was always the same: cardio first, strength training after.

Ever since I started going to Orangetheory Fitness a couple of years ago, I've kept the format the same: I always do the treadmill portion first, which is about 30 minutes, then I'll do the weights (another 30 minutes). My thinking goes that I'll get the most taxing (and sometimes boring) portion of the workout, cardio, out of the way so I can focus on lifting. Plus, the cardio gets my heart rate up to crush the weight room. Turns out I've been working out all wrong for the past 15-plus years.

I tapped a few certified personal trainers to see which was a better option: cardio first or strength training first? And while many trainers recommend not even doing both during the same workout - you should dedicate some days of the week to just cardio workouts and others to strictly strength training - some people prefer to incorporate both in the same training session or go to mixed-format studios like Orangetheory and Barry's Bootcamp.

For the most part, they agreed you should strength train first, then do cardio - but there's a catch. Here's why.

Why You Should Strength Train First

"For overall muscle growth, I recommend weights first so you can utilize your maximum stores of muscle glycogen, which is stored energy, for your strength session," ACSM-certified personal trainer Jim White, RDN, owner of Jim White Fitness and Nutrition Studios, told POPSUGAR. "Oftentimes, if you burn yourself out with cardio before weights, you can use up a lot of your energy, causing a lower exertion during your weight-training session."

NASM-certified personal trainer Nick Bolton agrees. He explained that when you step in the gym, you have a limited supply of energy, and you want to prioritize your energy expenditure. "Strength training requires the most energy to perform," he said. "In order to make the most of your workout, you need to be able to get quality sets in, which requires engaging more muscle fibers by performing more sets and reps under an appropriate amount of weight." He added that when you lift first, you also have more energy for the proper technique, which is crucial to seeing results and preventing injury.

However, before you hit the weights, Jim recommends warming up for five to 10 minutes. Here's a dynamic warmup to get you started.

In General, It Depends on Your Goals

Although the conventional wisdom goes that lifting first will help you with strength gains, it ultimately depends on your goals. If you are looking to gain muscle and get stronger, then lifting first is key. NASM-certified personal trainer Cary Williams, CEO of Boxing and Barbells, agrees with this sentiment. However, that order is not best for everyone.

"If you are working on improving your run time and need to knock out three miles along with your weight training, you may want to hit the treadmill first, when you have more energy, and then do weights after," she told POPSUGAR, adding that you will push harder with the first thing you do.

Ryan Fairman, ACSM-certified personal trainer, echoed that statement. He said weightlifting first is best for people who are looking to improve strength or gain muscle, but cardio first is ideal for someone gearing up for a race or who wants to improve their heart health. "Energy is lost during both types of exercise . . . you will feel less fatigued at the beginning vs. the end," he told POPSUGAR. "Having a goal will make the distinction of which one you choose."

Not to mention, if you spend too much time scrolling to find the perfect playlist and run out of time during your workout, whatever is second will be cut short (guilty!). For years, I would sacrifice my weight training because cardio took too long, which didn't lead to any progress.

So while hitting the weight room first will help improve your muscle mass, if that's your objective, it may not be the best option for you if you're focused on improving your mile time. Decide on your ultimate goal and go from there.

Not sure how to approach your workouts now that you have this information? Here is a four-week workout plan for you to follow; it has strength-training and running workouts scheduled for separate days.

Serena Williams's Outfit Isn't a Leotard - It's a Badass "Serena-tard," Thank You Very Much

We can always count on Serena Williams to make a damn-good fashion statement while dominating the tennis court, and her first outfit at the Australian Open certainly didn't disappoint. The 37-year-old athlete showed up to her match against Germany's Tatjana Maria - a match she crushed in just 49 minutes, might I add - wearing an emerald bodysuit she designed with Nike.

Her outfit featured white and black stripes and a triangular cutout in the back, and Serena wore it with compression stockings and black Nike sneakers. When asked if her one-piece outfit was a onesie or leotard, the mother of one dubbed it a "Serena-tard" while speaking to journalists during a postmatch press conference. So much yes!

Last year, the backhand-smashing queen was famously banned from wearing a catsuit at the French Open. A few days after the dress code restriction was announced, Serena boldly debuted an outfit featuring a tulle tutu-like skirt at the US Open, causing quite the flurry of passionate responses from fans. Needless to say, Serena's latest French Open look has incited similarly supportive reactions, which you can read ahead after admiring her outfit from all angles.

Kate has worn the brand's Bala shoes while touring Canada in 2011, attending the America's Cup World Series in 2015, and on a number of other outings. Though they typically retail for around $140, Page Six recently pointed out the Sebago Bala shoes are available on Amazon for $95, while the brown pair are available for only $29. How to Style a Velour Sweatsuit ('Cause the 2000s Are Back, Baby!)

It was sometime in the early 2000s and Juicy Couture had not only taken over my school but my wardrobe, too. 9 Reasons This Small Colorado Town Should Be Next on Your 2019 Travel To-Do List

Like most people, I traveled to Breckenridge, CO, the first time for the skiing. And although the skiing is fantastic, it's not what's kept me going back multiple times a year for the past five years. In fact, I spend far more time in Breck now when the slopes are closed for the season.

So what keeps me coming back? It's the people and the unique culture they've created in this small town high up in the Rockies. Whether I'm living the laptop lifestyle and working from Breck between hikes or simply hanging with friends and enjoying craft cocktails and beers on outdoor decks, I've never been anywhere with so many chill, laid-back young people. Mark Your Calendars! A (Not Fake) Super Blood Wolf Moon Is Happening This Month

A super blood wolf moon eclipse is occurring later this month, and no, you did not accidentally stumble upon some Twilight fan fiction. The rare lunar trifecta will be visible in the Americas, Iceland, Greenland, Western Europe, and West Africa on Jan. 20 and Jan. 21, depending on the time zone.

So, what the heck is it exactly? A wolf moon is the term used for the first full moon of the year, so, that's that on the "wolf" part. A super moon, meanwhile, occurs when the moon is as its closest distance to Earth during its orbit, making it seem unusually large. To top it all off, the moon will also experience a total lunar eclipse, which will give it a reddish hue - hence why it's called a blood moon. In fact, the super blood wolf moon - deep breath - will be the only total lunar eclipse of 2019.

While the entire eclipse will last several hours, the total coverage of the moon will take place at 11:41 p.m. ET, lasting for just over an hour. Unfortunately, only a partial eclipse will be visible in Eastern Europe and East Africa, and most of Asia will not be able to experience the lunar event.

Motorola Razrs Are Coming Back, So Remind Me What Year It Is Again?

We may no longer be sporting low-rise jeans, peasant tops, and Juicy tracksuits, but if the rumors are true, then we should all be prepared to feel like it's 2005 again pretty soon. According to The Wall Street Journal, the Motorola Razr - the flip phone that became one of the most popular phones of the early 2000s thanks to its super slim design - is making a comeback. Motorola's parent company, Lenovo, is apparently coming out with an updated version of the classic phone that will be sold exclusively to Verizon customers in the US as early as February.

If you're already hyperventilating over the thought of using T9 and pressing number keys an absurd amount of times just to type out a five-word text message, relax; the new model will reportedly be a foldable smartphone with a full touchscreen keyboard! That said, the price tag on the updated phone may be hefty, as reports say Lenovo plans to produce around 200,000 new Razrs that would sell for $1,500 each. Other possible phone features haven't been shared, but for $1,500, we can only hope that it's getting a major modern update.
