I Thought the Broken Capillaries on My Face Were Acne Scars - Here's How I Got Rid of Them
I don't have severe acne, but I've certainly had bouts of troublesome and angry skin from time to time, which led to scarring . . . or so I thought. The scarring wasn't major by any means, but being a keen skincare and facial enthusiast, I always noticed the red marks randomly dotted on my face. Turns out the scars didn't have anything to do with acne or spots - they were actually tiny broken capillaries.
Ever the guinea pig when it comes to trying any and every facial going, I jumped at the chance to try a treatment at Debbie Thomas's Clinic in Chelsea, London. Thomas is the facialist of Dua Lipa, Naomie Harris, and Jourdan Dunn, so I knew I was in pretty good hands at the salon.
Ahead, get a closer look at the treatment that got rid of my broken capillaries, and perhaps consider rethinking those harsh acne treatments before slathering them on like I did.

The Gross Things That Can Happen to Your Skin When You Wax
Aside from the pain of actually yanking hair from its follicle, waxing can cause other traumas to your skin. It's important to note that getting silky-smooth, hairless skin via a hot wax can actually yield uncomfortable or irritating results, and we've enlisted the help of two top dermatologists, Joshua Zeichner, MD, and Kavita Mariwalla, MD, to break them down.
The Possible Side Effects and How to Treat Them
Burns: Ideally, wax is applied to your skin at body temperature. If it's not, there is a risk of thermal burns. Dr. Zeichner said using exfoliating ingredients (like hydroxy acids) prior to a wax can increase the risk. Dr. Mariwalla also suggested putting a pause on your use of retinol three to four days before your appointment, as this can make you more susceptible to a burn. Should you experience one, slather on a heavy ointment to create a protective barrier. Dr. Zeichner likes Aveeno Cracked Skin Relief Cica Ointment ($14).
Infection: Contracting different skin infections can also occur and may take the form of red, warm, or tender areas after your wax. Dr. Zeichner mentioned one such infection, folliculitis - which can be characterized by red, pimple-like bumps - can occur if bacteria invade your hair follicles. "Oftentimes, an acne cleanser that contains benzoyl peroxide can help treat this, like Clean and Clear Continuous Control Cleanser ($5). If it is not improving, your dermatologist can write you a script for a prescription topical or oral antibiotic." Dr. Zeichner suggested seeing your doctor if it does not improve after a day or two.
Waxing can even provoke a flare-up of past infections. "If you have a history of cold sores or genital herpes, the trauma from a wax may be enough to bring out a new outbreak," Dr. Zeichner said. "This would look like a group of red, tender bumps or blisters, and [this type of outbreak] will improve on its own over the course of a week or so."
Preventative Measures
You can do a few things to prevent excessive trauma to your skin. First and foremost, make sure you vet wherever you choose to get your wax. You can do so by reading reviews of past customers' experiences and being aware of your esthetician's practices. "Keep an eye out for whether they are dipping the wooden stick back into the wax after applying it to your skin," Dr. Mariwalla said. "If yes, chances are they are doing that to everyone and that warm tin of wax can have several contaminants."
Next, stay away from exfoliating products or scrubs and introduce moisturizing ingredients to the area. "The physical and chemical exfoliators can make the skin more sensitive and increase your risk of a potential side effect," Dr. Zeichner said. Regarding moisturizers, he recommended ones that contain hyaluronic acid. "It's like a sponge that binds to 1,000 times its weight in water to plump and hydrate."
Lastly, make sure your hair is long enough to wax to avoid potential infections. Zeichner suggested that hair be at least 1 to 2 mm long before your appointment. "Wax is applied to the skin and attaches to the hairs at the surface," he said. "If the hairs are not long enough, the wax will not have anything to grab onto as it is removed."
14 Subtle Details You Probably Missed While Watching Ariana Grande's "7 Rings" Video
In news that should surprise absolutely no one, Ariana Grande's new song, "7 Rings," is already in the running for 2019's best bop. Not only that, but the music video that goes along with it is packed with pink-tinted visuals and plenty of subtle nods to the 25-year-old singer's personal life and ever-evolving career.
Although the "7 Rings" music video doesn't attempt to re-create any beloved girl-power movies (yes, we're still very much obsessed with "Thank U, Next"), there's still a lot to appreciate. Bejeweled cat ears? Check. Towering Champagne fountains? Check. Pastel sushi? Duh.
If you want to take a closer look at Grande's latest video and all the sneaky hints she slipped into it, keep reading.
Is Glass REALLY the End of M. Night Shyamalan's Superhero Universe? Let's Investigate
Warning: big ol' spoilers for the ending of Glass below!
Well, folks, the final film in M. Night Shyamalan's Eastrail 177 Trilogy, Glass, has arrived, and we have a few questions. For instance, what in the world makes Casey (Anya Taylor-Joy) think hanging out with Kevin Wendell Crumb (James McAvoy) again would be a good idea? Why doesn't David (Bruce Willis) carry a snorkel with him at all times? And why, why oh why, did Sarah Paulson let someone dye her hair that particular shade of orange?!
Although we don't have the answers to those questions and likely never will, there is one thing that we can answer for you: is Glass actually the end of Shyamalan's trilogy or is another film in the works? At the moment, the director himself has asserted that yes, the Eastrail 177 series is done. For good.
Shyamalan recently told Vulture that, technically, the universe he created "could" continue, but he also noted that he has no plans for another installment in the series. "That's not interesting to me. There's no danger in that. Or not enough danger, let's say that," he said of creating an entire cinematic universe based on Glass, Split, and Unbreakable. "We're not doing that, though . . . I have the sequel rights to most of my movies, essentially for the reason to not do them."
Shyamalan experienced a flood of goodwill in Hollywood after the success of his 2015 found-footage horror film, The Visit, which he followed up with 2017's Split, an effective, chilling horror film starring McAvoy as Crumb, a man with dissociative identity disorder struggling to keep all 23 (that's right, 23) of his wildly different personalities in check. The final minute of the film ends up revealing that - surprise! - Split takes place in the same universe as Shyamalan's bleak foray into the everyday-man-turns-superhero genre, 2000's Unbreakable. That's what made fans of Split so excited for this year's Glass, which connects the core characters and events in the previous two films - Crumb, David Dunn, and Mr. Glass (Samuel L. Jackson) - for a twisted showdown.
Glass doesn't have a postcredits scene, which further supports the director's claim that the trilogy is indeed over. But then again, so many plot points are left up in the air by the time the movie wraps up. Shyamalan introduces an entire subplot about Paulson's character, Dr. Ellie Staple, working for a nefarious government organization that eliminates superheroes by any means necessary at the last minute, for example. (Shyamalan deliberately zooms in on everyone in the organization's three-leaf clover tattoos, which all but screams, "Don't worry, WE'LL GET TO THIS IN THE SEQUEL!") And then there's the matter of Casey (along with David's son and Mr. Glass's mother) releasing footage of David and the Beast going head to head, which will supposedly awaken superpowers in people across the world somehow?
Needless to say, it seems like Shyamalan deliberately leaves the door open for more story at the end of Glass, no matter how many times he repeats he won't be doing another movie in this series. How can someone who's been waiting literal decades to get this trilogy on the big screen wrap things up with so many loose ends?! He's had plenty of time to formulate a concrete ending for the saga of David, Crumb, and Mr. Glass. That's what makes it seem like, if the movie succeeds at the box office, a spinoff is in our future. Whether it stars Casey or one of the new superheroes who realizes their powers after watching Mr. Glass's live stream . . . well, you'll have to ask M. Night Shyamalan about that.
(Again.)
Netflix Reveals the Hardest Ending to Get in Black Mirror: Bandersnatch - Did You Find It?
Even after sitting on Netflix for a solid few weeks, it seems the excitement surrounding Black Mirror: Bandersnatch is holding strong. Now that the majority of Black Mirror fans and other Netflix subscribers have had a chance to play through the choose-your-own-adventure film, Netflix has seized the opportunity to share some interesting finds about the project. These interesting bits of information have been coming out through various official Twitter handles.
For instance, Netflix US revealed that 73% of viewers told Stefan to take the job (which abruptly ends the movie, forcing you to turn back. The Black Mirror account revealed that 60% of viewers chose "Frosties" for his morning cereal. But perhaps the most interesting bit of information pertains to the endings: there's one conclusion in the mix that Netflix has deemed the hardest to find, because so few viewers actually reached it.
Let me break it down real fast. I'm sure you're familiar with one of the most important pieces of backstory information: that Stefan's mother died in a horrible train derailment when he was five years old. She happened to catch a later train that day, because Stefan was desperately looking for his stuffed rabbit, which his father had hidden that morning. So, Stefan holds himself accountable for his mother's death, and even resents his father for his hand in that day as well.
I'm telling you this because it directly pertains to this supposed "hardest ending to find." If you follow the twists and the turns of the story for a while, and if you opt to go back and pick different paths, there's one truly strange place you'll wind up. In one conclusion, Stefan goes back in time and decides to go on the train with his mother. Nothing changes about that day except for Stefan's whereabouts. Mom is still late, and the train still derails, but the big difference is that Stefan dies along with her. In a strange way, it's a slightly euphoric and almost happy ending, albeit bittersweet. But Stefan seems quite at piece with his mother, and in dying that day, saves himself so much grief, trauma, and madness later in life.
At the end of this thread, we flash to present day, where Stefan has suddenly died in the chair at his therapist's office. A flummoxed medic can't figure out what happened. His heartbroken father kneels by his side, and his rattled therapist is clearly a bit f*cked up about the whole thing. But hey, Stefan is at peace.
Now, to the question at hand is, how do you get the ending? Like I said, you will definitely have to fiddle around for a while, and there are certain things that have to have happened in order for the path to appear. For one, you have to talk about Stefan's mom with his therapist. That's a given. You also have to follow Colin, take that LSD, and get his whole spiel about the multiverse and multiple timelines and the lot. You have to pick up the family photo at least once (side note: you'll get a fun Easter egg if you pick it twice), and you also, I think, have to have killed Dad at least once. Eventually, Netflix will give you a "loop-back" choice: "Get rabbit from Dad."
This unlocks a path in which Stefan sneaks into his father's study. There are a few interesting paths down this route, but if you want the train ending, you must enter in "TOY." Stefan will find his rabbit in the safe, and then he will crawl through the mirror and place it under his bed. Young Stefan finds the rabbit no problem, but his mother is still late! Then you get the "yes or no" choice, which was previously just a "no" choice: will you go with mom? Pick yes and watch the bittersweetness play out from there.
Wow, just when we thought the Bandersnatch mysteries were all solved, there's more to unpack. Watch, Netflix is going to reveal a whole new path in, like, six months. And then, we'll have to relive the nightmare all over again.
Did You Recognize This 13 Reasons Why Star in True Detective?
If you've been analyzing True Detective season three frame by frame like we have, chances are you've noticed a familiar face. No, we're not referring to Oscar winner Mahershala Ali. We're actually talking about one of our favorite breakout stars, Brandon Flynn.
Our beloved reformed bad boy from 13 Reasons Why has been popping up in the third season of the crime show, and we think there's a possibility he might be around for a few more episodes. Flynn plays Ryan Peters, a teenage boy who hangs with a troublesome crowd. On the day Julie and Will Purcell go missing, witness testimony reveals Peters and his two friends crossed paths with the two children. Following the children's disappearance, Peters is brought in for questioning, and he is interrogated about his Black Sabbath T-shirt (to determine his interest in the occult). While Flynn is only listed in the first two episodes of True Detective on IMDB, we wouldn't be surprised if this was just a way to keep audiences guessing.
Flynn's True Detective casting was announced back in February 2018, along with Michael Graziadei (Good Girls Revolt), who plays creepy Uncle Dan. The Miami native has been relatively quiet about his new role, other than an Instagram post. "'Touch darkness and darkness touches you back...' ready to join True Detective Season 3 🙌 📸" he wrote.
A post shared by Brandon Flynn (@flynnagin11) on Feb 8, 2018 at 2:25pm PST
Flynn's acting abilities in the third season have managed to impress us, and terrify us all at the time time. But ever since his huge recurring role on 13 Reasons Why, we've been major fans. Flynn's character Justin Foley managed to win over audiences with his edgy, misunderstood character, who eventually ends up completely redeeming himself to save his girlfriend, Jessica Davis, at the end of season two. According to Flynn's Instagram, and IMDB, we can definitely expect Justin Foley to return for season three, so we have plenty more Flynn to look forward to.
Years before 13 Reasons Why, Flynn caught the acting bug at 10 years old, when he played Mr. Smee in a musical production of Peter Pan. After that, he graduated with a bachelor's degree in Fine Arts from Rutgers University. He's since been cast in several commercials, and he's gotten a ton of theatrical experience in plays like Much Ado About Nothing and The Crucible. He got his first big break in 2016 satirical TV series BrainDead. And, of course, in 2017, he earned the 13 Reasons Why role that put him on the map.
Since then, he's starred in short film Binge, and a movie called Looks That Kill, which is in post-production, according to IMDB. In 2019, his films The Liar and 1917 are also slated for releases. We also knew him as one half of our favorite couple, but unfortunately in June 2018, he and Sam Smith called it quits.
True Detective's Season 3 Theme Song Reveals Some Chilling Information
Not since Big Little Lies has a theme song chilled us to the bone the way True Detective's season three theme song does. In case you need a refresher, the opening credits feature the cast's various profiles while a bluesy vocalist sings, "I got a letter this morning, how do you reckon it read? It said, "Hurry, hurry, yeah your love is dead."
If that didn't give you goosebumps, you might not pass a CAPTCHA verification test (because you're a robot).
Leave it to the creators behind True Detective to find the perfect melody for its introductory sequence. But knowing the show as we do, nothing is coincidental. If you recall, last season changed its theme song every week to a different verse from Leonard Cohen's "Nevermind." So we couldn't help but wonder what the backstory for this season's theme song is.
And we were not disappointed.
The song is called "Death Letter" (because of course it is), and it is a 1995 recording by an American jazz musician named Cassandra Wilson. The song appears on her Grammy-winning album New Moon Daughter, which we can't help but point out because the day the children go missing is actually on a new moon (which is major deviation from what Detective Hays recalls in his testimony).
Wilson's recording is not an original. It is a cover of a 1965 song by Delta blues musician Son House. What's interesting to note is that the original song features a male protagonist, and therefore it's a female "love" that dies. In the True Detective cover, the genders are swapped, so it's a male victim that is sung about.
Music producer T Bone Burnett returned to create and write the score for the third season, and he spoke to Esquire about the choice behind the theme song.
"We're starting and ending the season with deep, deep classic American vernacular," Burnett said of Wilson, who will be featured on several episodes throughout the season.
There's several connections that can be drawn from the show's theme song to the show's plot lines. For one, there is in fact a letter that appears in the second episode of the season. It's a letter comprised of magazine clippings that is left for the Purcell parents after Will's body has been found, and Julie is still missing. It reads: "Do not worry. Julie is in a good place and safe. The children shud [sic] laugh. Do not look. Let go." This is the opposite of a death letter, and in fact, it suggests that Julie is very much alive (a fact that is confirmed in the later timelines). And yet, we can't help but wonder why a theme song with the title "Death Letter" would be chosen given the circumstances. It seems highly suspect.
Throughout the rest of the song, there are references to "Judgment Day" and prayer, which can't be ignored, either, given the potential cult connections, like the cornhusk dolls and the fact that Will's body is found with his hands in prayer.
We're curious to see where else the show uses Wilson's vocals, but we can already tell it's going to be nothing short of haunting.
The Game of Thrones Season 8 Teaser Doesn't Show New Footage, but It Has SO Many Clues
We officially have a premiere date for Game of Thrones' final season, and HBO delivered the news in the best way: with an ominous season eight teaser that's downright chilling. While there's not much action or new scenes from the upcoming season, the video does feature three of the last children of House Stark - Jon, Sansa, and Arya - all together for the first time since season one. The teaser is less than a minute long, but it packs just enough detail in every frame to allow us to dig deep until the next trailer. In case you haven't watched it, oh, 800 times or so already like we have, keep reading to see every itty-bitty thing you might have missed.
What's the Latest With Meredith's Love Triangle on Grey's Anatomy? Here's an Update
Warning: slight Grey's Anatomy spoilers ahead!
This week, we're back in the figurative trenches with our favorite fictional doctors on Grey's Anatomy. As you very well now know, Meredith has spent the better part of the season fielding advances from two different gentlemen: long-term Italian stud Andrew DeLuca and hot new "Ortho God" Link. There are really reasons to root for both of them, especially when, at the end of the day, we all just want Meredith to find love. (Then again, some people are just fine with her being an independent badass woman who doesn't need a man.)
With that tantalizing setup all said and done, the midseason finale of the show really left us in an interesting lurch. When the windy superstorm cuts the hospital power, Meredith finds herself trapped in the elevator with DeLuca. I have to admit, friends: the whole affair really had me feeling all kinds of heart-eyes about the pair. DeLuca really opened up about his past and said some very knee-weakening things in Italian, and by the end of the little ordeal, it was clear he had all but won Meredith over. They even got this close to a kiss before the elevator fired back up and the doors flung open.
Lest we forget about Meredith's promise to Link, just before the whole elevator debacle, she agreed to go out to drinks with him! This leads to a classic Grey's moment at the end of the episode; DeLuca is trying to convince Meredith to give him a chance, and then Link walks up, ready to redeem his date. Meredith, caught between the two men for the umpteenth time this season, pulls a classic Meredith move: she's not spending the night with either of them!
The episode presents an interesting conundrum, leaving an even playing field. She first agreed to a date with Link, which meant she was swaying in his favor. They're both at the same level, so there's no professional alarm bells, and it seemed like his cool confidence had won her over. But Meredith also remarks that a new, cockier DeLuca has suddenly emerged, and she is clearly curious about him. You can see the consideration, and the ever-so-slight raise of an eyebrow.
As for who I want her to pick? I am seriously torn, friends. Clearly DeLuca and Meredith have just formed a special bond, but Link is giving me all kinds of "McDreamy" vibes. But, as is noted in the episode, DeLuca marks a clear case of Meredith "not learning her lesson," because they have the same hierarchy differences that she and Derek once shared. It's a neck-and-neck race, and I can't wait to see how the rest of the season goes.
Ouch! Princess Anne Had a Savage Response When Asked About Prince Philip's Car Accident
Prince Philip was hospitalized following a scary car accident on Thursday. Fortunately, the 97-year-old royal is OK, but don't you dare ask Princess Anne how he's doing. While arriving at an event on Friday, Philip and Queen Elizabeth II's only daughter was asked about the Duke of Edinburgh's condition that morning, to which she savagely replied, "I've no idea. You know where I am? Same place as you." Ouch!
After wrapping up her engagement, another reporter asked Anne if she had received an update on her father, and this time, Anne seemed to have a better attitude about it. "Not since I've been in there," she replied.
A rather brave reporter decided to have a second fo at asking Princess Anne how Prince Philip is.
"Not since I've been in there" she replied pic.twitter.com/pxligs976R- Charlie Proctor (@MonarchyUK) January 18, 2019
The Duke of Edinburgh was involved in a car collision around 3 p.m. on Thursday near Sandringham Estate with a Kia driven by a 28-year-old woman with a 9-month-old baby and a 45-year-old passenger. Philip's Land Rover was overturned, and the 45-year-old passenger suffered a broken wrist, but luckily, the baby was uninjured. "Contact has been made privately with those traveling in the other car and well wishes exchanged," a palace spokeswoman told People. Philip visited the doctor on Friday for a precautionary checkup and has been given the all-clear.
Jessica Simpson's Baby Shower Looks Like the Kind of Fairy Tale We Could Only Dream About
Who knew Jessica Simpson could transform into Mother Nature so easily? On Jan. 19, the singer hosted a nature-themed baby shower for her third child - complete with botanical details, hanging crystal lights, and pastel decorations. At the event, Jessica wore a stunning white lace gown with a flower crown and posed alongside loved ones, including her sister, Ashlee, mother, Tina, and good friend CaCee Cobb. Jessica's 6-year-old daughter, Maxwell, and Ashlee's 3-year-old daughter, Jagger, were featured in a few adorable snapshots, as well.
Jessica also subtly revealed the name of her future bundle of joy, whom she'll share with husband Eric Johnson. Nearly all of her captions on Instagram had the phrase "Birdie's Nest," which fans wondered if it was a hint at her baby's moniker. Thankfully, Us Weekly has confirmed that Birdie will indeed be the name of Jessica's daughter.
Recently, Jessica opened up about her pregnancy symptoms, particularly her foot swelling. Thankfully, she found a remedy in time for her to enjoy the scenic baby shower. Look on to see even more photos of her breathtaking gathering!
Mysterio Isn't the Only Villain in Spider-Man: Far From Home - Meet the Elementals
Marvel fans already have the scoop on Spider-Man: Far From Home's most recognizable villain, Mysterio (played by Jake Gyllenhaal), but they might not be well-versed on the other danger threatening to interrupt Peter Parker's Summer vacation. Namely, the four known as the Elementals in Marvel Comics lore.
The Elementals are four immortal, extradimensional humanoids with power over natural forces: Hellfire, Hydron, Magnum, and Zephyr, each possessing power over fire, water, earth, and air, respectively. According to lore, they ruled a kingdom on Earth before the rise of Atlantis and were banished to another dimension when they tried to conquer Egypt. They eventually make their way back to modern Earth and frequently lock horns with Carol Danvers (which is a pretty interesting connection to the upcoming Captain Marvel film). The Elementals are seriously formidable foes with a bloodthirst that rivals most Marvel villains - though Thanos will always hold a special place in our hearts.
Thanks to some subtle Easter eggs that fans caught in the trailer, some believe the villains could be a reinvention of the Amazing Spider-Man's Sandman, Molten Man, and Hydro-Man. While it would definitely be cool to see the classic villains make their collective debut on the big screen - though Sandman does appear in Spider-Man 3, played by Thomas Haden Church - the beings shown in the trailer point to Elementals more than anyone else. The "Sandman" in the trailer looks to be made from rocks, which is much more Magnum's ability than Sandman's, and Zephyr is shown to be creating the windstorm that Spider-Man glides through in his new suit.
Though Spider-Man never encounters the Elementals in the comic book, his adventures against Mysterio might suggest a reason they're making an appearance in the MCU. In the comics, Mysterio's abilities are generally limited to his knowledge of stunt-work and special effects. He doesn't have the Doctor Strange-like powers that we glimpsed in the teaser. One of his favorite tricks is to create illusions of terrifying monsters that only he can defeat so he can play the hero and win the fame he thinks he deserves. It wouldn't be absurd to wonder if he's using the Elementals to play the same trick in Far From Home.
We won't know anything more until the film comes out on July 5, but we can already tell it'll be exciting!
You'll Hardly Believe the Twisty True Story Behind The Favourite
The historical comedy The Favourite is proving to be a definite contender for the major awards this season. After picking up a win for star Olivia Colman at the Golden Globes, plus 12 BAFTA nominations, the film is well on its way to being a heavy hitter. Set during the reign of Queen Anne of Great Britain, the story revolves around a messy triangle between the queen, her longtime confidant, and an ambitious newcomer to the court. The movie shows all the scheming and hijinks - but the best part is that it's all based on a true story.
The Backstory
Queen Anne (played by Colman) was part of the Stuart dynasty, who came to the English throne after Queen Elizabeth died without children and left the throne to James I, son of Mary, Queen of Scots. Her father was the deposed King James II, who was overthrown in the Glorious Revolution by Anne's brother-in-law and sister William and Mary of Orange. Because William and Mary had no children of their own, Anne was designated their heir and became queen in 1702. Fans of Outlander are definitely familiar with this era, in which James II's grandson Charles ("Bonnie Prince Charlie") rebelled against the Stuarts.
Long before she was queen, however, Anne became friends with Sarah Jennings, a politician's daughter and a lady-in-waiting to Anne's stepmother, Mary of Modena. Sarah soon married John Churchill and began her ascent. Her friendship with Anne grew, and she became a lady of the bedchamber to Anne after Anne married Prince George of Denmark in 1683. During the reign of William and Mary, the Churchills were raised in rank as the Earl and Countess of Marlborough but were treated with wariness, since Sarah's closeness to and influence on Anne were becoming well-known. When Anne became queen, she gave the Churchills a dukedom, making Sarah the Duchess of Marlborough.
A Rivalry
Sarah (played by Rachel Weisz) was the queen's most trusted adviser and essentially ran her household, controlling everything from her household finances to who did and did not get an audience with the queen. She used her influence to bring a poor cousin, Abigail Hill (played by Emma Stone), to court as a lady of the bedchamber. However, Sarah's bluntness began to irritate the queen, and Abigail, a subtler and more soft-spoken woman, gained favor as a contrast. When Abigail secretly married Samuel Masham, a midtier soldier and courtier, Anne was present, but Sarah was not. In 1812, Anne rewarded Masham with a barony, making him and Abigail the Baron and Baroness Masham.
The personal and the political were inextricably linked at this court, and the push for favor with the queen was tied to the women's political and family intrigues as well. But that doesn't mean the antics were all dignified: for instance, historian and writer Ann Foster describes how the final rift between Anne and Sarah came when Sarah took down a portrait of Anne's late husband without her knowledge, then refused to put it back. Prior to this, apparently, a jealous Sarah also "anonymously" commissioned a fairly explicit poem accusing Abigail of being in a sexual relationship with Anne and threatened to ruin the queen's reputation with letters that could have implicated her as a lesbian.
Is the Movie Accurate?
Ultimately, there is no hard-and-fast evidence as to whether Queen Anne and her ladies-in-waiting (or, if you're Colman, her "b*tches") had romantic and sexual relationships or not, although the intimacy in their surviving letters is evident to see.
As professor Julie Crawford told The Cut, "There wasn't a radical separation between what we recognize as sexual intimacy and the other kinds of bodily intimacy with which people lived at the time, particularly for elite people, who had women who literally undressed them... Sexual intimacy was not seen somehow as a radically different from other forms of intimacy or bed-sharing, or the care of bodies that happened at the time, unless it had the potential to rupture a hymen or make a baby. "
The messy drama and petty letter-and-poem-writing blackmail, though? All very, hilariously real.

Want to Try Out Intermittent Fasting? Here's a 1-Week Kick-Start Plan
Heard of intermittent fasting and want to try it out? Already an intermittent faster but getting bored with it? A seven-day meal plan is just what you need then! For those new to intermittent fasting, it's a way of eating that doesn't tell you what to eat but rather when to eat. So technically it's not a diet, but you still want to practice healthy eating if you want to reach your weight-loss goals. Instead of limiting calories, intermittent fasting limits the times you can eat to a specific window. There are so many different ways to intermittently fast, but the most common method is called the 16 to 8 split - fasting for 16 hours and eating for eight hours.
It may sound really hard at first, but at least eight hours of the 16 is spent sleeping. There's also a lot of downtime between dinner and sleeping that adds up. Just be patient with yourself, and you'll find your body adjusting to this new eating schedule in no time. If you're looking to get started now, what better way than planning what you're going to eat during your eight-hour eating window?
I Pee When I Jump Rope, and Guess What? It's OK!
There used to be a running joke in my house: every time I'd laugh too hard or sneeze, I'd have to run upstairs, and my kids would yell, "Mommy peed in her pants again!" Through CrossFit, specifically from doing heavy squats and core work, it's helped to strengthen my pelvic floor, similarly to how kegels work. My legs, butt, and abs are the strongest they've ever been, and apparently so are my inner lady muscles. Now, I can sneeze without having to bee-line it to the bathroom.
But one exercise that I recently started working on has brought back that unexpected, embarrassing little annoyance - double unders. It's a more intense form of jumping rope that involves letting the rope pass underneath your feet twice in between each jump instead of just once as with regular jumping rope. They're super fun to work on, not only for the physical challenge to see how many I can nail in a row, but also because they make my heart rate soar, so I know I'm working hard.
The only issue is, once I got eight or more in a row, pee would just leak out of me. The first time it happened in class, I ran to the bathroom. Then I picked up my rope and started jumping again. But even with an empty bladder, I ended up peeing a little. I was like, "Where the heck is this pee coming from?"
After that, feeling flustered and worried about Niagara Falls pouring down my leggings, I avoided double unders for a few weeks, until I talked to some other CrossFit moms about it. Every single one of them nodded their heads up and down, totally relating. Some said it happens when they do box jumps, too, and another woman said it happens every time she does heavy squats. It's just one of those amazing "gifts" to remind us of motherhood.
Knowing I wasn't alone made me feel 99 percent better. The other one percent came from wearing a pantyliner and dark pants every time I went to class. It was slightly annoying, but much better than dealing with the fear of my bladder exploding during class and having a rush of pee trickle down my leg into a puddle on the floor.
Now, I always make time to hit the ladies room before a workout involving jumping rope; sometimes I even take a pee break during a workout if I need to. But what's really helped me come to terms with peeing while exercising is that I changed my whole perspective. I focus on the fact that I'm grateful for being a mom to two healthy, kind kids, that I have the physical ability to take part in CrossFit classes. Compared to other things that could happen, a little pee is nothing!
If You Make This Mistake When Going Low-Cal, Your Metabolism Will Pay For It
When it comes to losing weight, a lot of weight-loss programs and diets require eating in a calorie deficit. While experts and research support this, it's important that you don't cut your calories too much, as that can be extremely detrimental to your ability to lose weight.
To find out if low-calorie diets are doing more harm than good and messing with your metabolism, POPSUGAR spoke to Avigdor Arad, PhD, RDN, CDE, director of the Mount Sinai PhysioLab.
What Is Metabolism?
Metabolism is an extremely complex process that relates to how your body processes energy from fat, protein, and sugar/carbohydrates and how it stores that energy. Usually, when people talk about their metabolism, they actually mean their metabolic rate, which is the amount of energy, more commonly referred to as calories, you burn in a day. There are a lot of things that can affect your metabolism, such as your age, your hormones, and your diet.
Why Low-Calorie Diets Slow Down Your Metabolism
"When you eat a very low-calorie diet, 500 or 800 calories a day, it certainly signals [to] your body that there's some food shortage/nutrient deprivation," Dr. Arad told POPSUGAR. "The only way your body can handle it is by conserving energy. Your body is going to slow down your metabolism, for a lack of better terms," he continued. As your body goes into conservation mode, you'll be burning fewer calories.
"It's very difficult to maintain a low-calorie diet, and also, it's very difficult to take in a sufficient amount of nutrients to keep you healthy," he said. "In the long run, what those diets show is that it's not very sustainable and it can affect people's mood and function, and it's just not worth it." Low-calorie diets can slow down your metabolism, and ultimately, "The bang for your buck is not very big," said Dr. Arad.
How Many Calories You Should Eat Per Day
Although extremely low-calorie diets aren't doing your body any good, according to Dr. Arad, calorie-restriction, such as intermittent fasting when done wisely and not too low, "could be extremely helpful." This is because, in his opinion, people are eating more than what their body needs, and that excess energy has the potential to be stored as fat. More importantly, Dr. Arad said to place emphasis on the quality along with the quantity of the calories you ingest.
Like most things in fitness, it's impossible to provide an exact amount of calories you need to consume in a day to function at your best. This is because we all have different resting metabolic rates (RMR) - the minimum number of calories you need in a day for essential bodily functions like breathing and to keep your brain functioning. The most accurate way to determine your resting metabolic rate is to get a specialized RMR test done at clinics such as Fitnescity ($250, but prices may vary). Another way to determine your RMR is by using this formula, but the results will be less accurate.
On average, the USDA recommends that adult women consume between 1,600 and 2,400 calories a day and adult males consume between 2,000 and 3,000 calories a day. These numbers will vary depending on your goals and lifestyle, and if you'd like to find out the optimal amount of calories you need in a day, we advise consulting your doctor, a registered dietitian, or a certified nutrition coach.

And did we mention it can help you live longer? If you haven't tried this simple diet yet, it's time to give it a shot.
Meals on the Mediterranean diet follow this formula: half vegetables and fruit, a quarter whole grains, and a quarter fish, lean protein, or vegetarian protein, with a small amount of healthy fat. Sounds simple, right? The diet is less extreme than many other diets, so it's likely to be an easy transition from whatever you're eating now. It's just a matter of filling up on low-starch vegetables and fruits and keeping your lean protein intake high. To get you started, we've put together a week of meals you can try out. You can, of course, mix and match as you please, as long as you keep the meal formula in mind.
Here's What You Need to Know About the New Diet That Has the Potential to Save the World
Move over, keto diet; there's a new diet ready to take the throne. According to a new report published in The Lancet, people should eat less meat and sugar and more fruits and vegetables, NBC News reported.
Making these nutritional changes would lead to more sustainable methods in agriculture, cause less pollution, and contribute less to global warming and climate change. "Food systems have the potential to nurture human health and support environmental sustainability, however our current trajectories threaten both," the commission said.
To be honest, we aren't surprised by their findings. Even Beyoncé and JAY-Z have started a challenge to go vegan in order to positively impact your health and the environment. If you aren't quite ready to go 100 percent plant-based, the planet diet is a good first step to take.
And it's not just the environment you'll be helping; this diet can improve your health, too. According to the Eat-Lancet Commission summary report, if everyone switched to a diet that was 50 percent lower in red meat and sugar and ate more fruits and vegetables, approximately 11 million fewer people would die prematurely every year. "Healthy diets have an optimal caloric intake and consist largely of a diversity of plant-based foods, low amounts of animal source foods, contain unsaturated rather than saturated fats, and limited amounts of refined grains, highly processed foods and added sugars," the commission said.
If you're ready to improve your health and help save the world, here are 10 ways to eat a more plant-based diet.

The Way You Sleep Says a Lot More About Your Personality Than You May Realize
When you're closing your eyes and hitting your pillow, you're probably not giving much thought about the position in which you actually fall asleep or stay asleep throughout the night. Of course, you're not awake to know whether you start on your side and end up on your belly or vice versa, and unless you sleep with a partner who likes reporting back on your nightly moves, you're probably clueless.
Think about it for a second, though. When you climb into bed to fall asleep in the first place or wake up in the middle of the night for whatever reason, are you always in the same position? Here's why you might want to pay more attention: your sleeping position can actually say a bit about who you are and what your personality is like.
"How we sleep reveals important facets about our personality, but it's not a cut and dry science, with considerable overlap of sleeping positions among various personalities," said Dr. Robert Glatter, MD, an assistant professor of emergency medicine at Northwell Health and attending emergency physician at Lenox Hill Hospital.
When you think about it, it makes sense. "Body language while asleep often reveals many things about our deep inner personalities, including our self-image and our fears, as well as our core beliefs and outward desire," Glatter said.
Based on Glatter's experience with patients, he tends to find these personality traits and sleeping patterns to match up across the board. "I find that more oftentimes than not, their sleeping positions are a good match to their personalities and general demeanor," he said.
"Most people don't change their sleeping positions throughout their lives. The position we choose to fall asleep in promotes stability and inner comfort and helps us to feel solid and secure as we end our day," he added. Keep reading for his insight on what your sleeping position says about you.
Fetal
"The fetal sleeping position is generally the most common sleeping position," he said. "Fetal sleepers sleep on their side, curled up with their knees tucked in," he explained.
People who sleep in this position might be more introverted or closed up in nature to protect themselves, Glatter said. "People who sleep in the fetal position are often quite sensitive and generally withdrawn or shy. They are often quite anxious and may get bogged down in details," he explained, and he said he often notices the connection when speaking to his patients. What's more, these fetal sleepers often worry excessively over minor details, he said, so they'll need some other ways to de-stress beyond shut-eye, like yoga, exercise, or meditation.
Log
"The log sleeper rests on the side with a straight body and limbs kept at the sides," Dr. Glatter said. Good news: these sleepers are generally more at ease, unlike those fetal-position sleepers.
"These sleepers are often relaxed and laid-back, but also can be quite gullible at times," he said, "based on research by Chris Idzikowski, director of the UK's Sleep Assessment and Advisory Service, whose work helps to support the belief that sleeping position appears to draw strong correlations about our personality traits during our waking hours."
If you're a log sleeper, you might want to keep in mind that it's good to be easy-going and less stressed in general, but don't be so quick to go with the flow at all times.
Yearner
"Yearner sleepers are basically side sleepers who stretch both arms out in front of themselves as if they are yearning or grasping for something," Dr. Glatter explained. You can think of this as a need or desire for something, and so reaching out to take hold is a natural tendency. Though, while yearners might weigh pros and cons for their desires and may act slower than others, they are confident in their choices once all is sorted out. "They often take a while to make a decision, but are steadfast once they have made up the their mind," he said.
Soldier
"Soldier sleepers typically lay on their backs with both arms close to their sides," he said. "In general, they are the strong yet silent type. They are more often than not reserved and don't like to make waves," he said.
However, they can also put the pressure on. "They can be quite exacting and demanding of themselves as well as others," he added.
Freefaller
"Freefallers lie on their tummies with their hands encircling their pillows, and they typically turn their head to one side," he said. However, it's not the healthiest position to sleep in, regardless of personality traits. "This mode of sleeping is typically quite uncomfortable due to the neck being rotated and extended," he explained.
"Freefallers yearn to be in control, but in truth feel that their life is often spinning out of control at times. And so they often awake with anxiety," he added, which has also been reported in his experience with patients. To help ease these troubles, try some calming music before bed or perhaps a lavender-scented eye mask to relax those nerves.
Starfish
"People who are starfish sleepers typically lie on their back with both arms encircling their pillow, as if they are in a sit-up position. In general, they are gregarious and very giving, and they are selfless, based on Idzikowski's research," Dr. Glatter said.
Just be warned that with that generous nature might come a few bouts of snores. (Any partners, watch out.) "In general, the starfish and soldier positions are more prone to snoring and poor sleep quality," he said, due to the discomfort and possible muscle tension come morning.
How Many Grams of Sugar Should You Eat Each Day to Lose Weight? These Experts Explain
You've no doubt heard that sugar has been the number one culprit behind weight gain. In fact, over the last few years, sugar has all but been demonized as the terrible-for-you ingredient that is as addictive as cocaine and will lead to heart disease and diabetes. And while that's all a bit of an exaggeration, there's no denying that sugar, especially added sugar found in packaged food and sweets, isn't great for your health.
The American Heart Association recommends no more than six teaspoons (25 grams) of added sugar a day for women and nine teaspoons (36) grams for men. "Added sugars contribute zero nutrients but many added calories that can lead to extra pounds or even obesity, thereby reducing heart health," the AHA wrote on its website. And the World Health Organization (WHO) recommends only 10 percent of your diet come from added sugar, noting that "a further reduction to below five percent or roughly 25 grams (6 teaspoons) per day would provide additional health benefits."
OK, got it: keep the sugar down for overall health. But what's the sugar threshold for weight loss? Turns out, there's not a one-size-fits-all number. "There isn't a specific value for how many grams of sugar you should eat for weight loss," Ysabel Montemayor, RD, lead dietitian at Fresh n' Lean, told POPSUGAR "Many foods contain sugar, such as breads, grains, beverages, sweets, dairy products, fruits, and even vegetables." She added that the Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend, like the WHO, no more than 10 percent of calories come from added sugar. So for a 2,000-calorie-a-day diet, this would be around 50 grams of added sugar. Plus carbs, which contain sugar, should constitute 45-65 percent of your diet, according to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans (about 225-325 grams of total carbs).
To make matters more confusing, Ana Reisdorf, MS, RD, said there is no recommendation for sugar grams separate from total carb grams; while there is a recommendation for added sugar, total sugar gets a lot more confusing since foods like fruit and whole-grain carbs also contain sugar. And while the FDA revealed that new food packaging will distinguish between grams of total sugar and added sugar on the nutrition label, that feature is currently not on the market.
Instead of focusing on a specific gram amount, Ysabel recommends choosing sugar-containing foods that are fiber-rich, such as whole grains, fruits, and vegetables, which can help you lose weight because "they are absorbed more slowly into the body and can keep you fuller longer." Refined sugar and sweets, on the other hand, are digested quickly and cause a spike in blood sugar, leading to an inevitable crash, which can mess with your insulin levels and cause weight gain. While Ysabel recommended to limit added sugars and refined carbs, Ana said she tells her clients to choose packaged foods that have less than 10 grams of sugar on the label.
Overall, the amount of total sugar you should eat in a day should be determined by your doctor or registered dietitian, especially if you're looking to lose weight. Ysabel added that certain people, such as those with Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes, may have more specific needs, which should be determined by their healthcare provider.
In general, it's best to stick to the AHA guidelines, which is not only good for weight loss but also for overall health: 25 grams or less of added sugar a day. If you need help cutting back, check out these handy steps.
