Parents, Going to Every One of Your Kids' Games Matters More Than You Know
When I was growing up, both of my parents had demanding jobs. We lived in the suburbs and they worked in the city - my mom a court reporter, my dad a lawyer. They would endure the usually long and annoying commute back and forth every day, and many nights they'd still have some work to do when they got home. But while I know that now, my sister and I almost never felt that when we were younger. All we knew was that they were there . . . for every single thing.
At every game, I would search for their faces in the stands. When I found them, I knew I mattered. I knew my dreams mattered.
The big sport in my family has always been basketball. My dad played in college, and I pretty much attempted to dribble a ball as soon as I could walk. I begged to be in an endless amount of little leagues, went to basketball camp in the Summer, and played for my school's team in the Winter. When I got to high school, it became my top priority (and also took up most of my free time). And throughout my 15-plus years of playing basketball, my parents were at every single game. Every. One.
While I always loved seeing their faces in the stands, I didn't realize until I got older just how hard it must have been for them to do that. I know they must have had to leave work early a lot, endure long drives to faraway schools, fight their way through notoriously bad Midwestern snowstorms, and forget any personal stress to enthusiastically cheer me on. And since my sister played too, and we sometimes had games on the same day, they would divide and conquer to make sure we both had one of them there. No matter what was going on in their lives, they always, without fail, made being there for us a priority. It could have been the championship game during my senior year or a scrimmage in a just-for-fun Summer league - they were there.
When I look back on it now, having them at every game mattered more to me than I can probably ever explain. I wanted to show my dad that I listened to his tips during our Saturday morning practices in the driveway. I wanted to show my mom that I was as dedicated to the game as I told her I was. I wanted to prove that I was better at hustling down the court than my sister (sorry, sis - love you). I wanted to make them proud.
At every game, I would search for their faces in the stands. When I found them, I knew I mattered. I knew my dreams, no matter how silly or far-fetched they may have seemed, mattered. Whenever I would score points or play good defense, I would look up at my dad for his thumbs-up signal and listen for my mom's slightly embarrassing roar. Just like in every other aspect of my life, my parents proved I could rely on them. And that feeling has stuck with me throughout my life.
I know it isn't always possible or easy to show up and be at every game, but parents, even if you think it's no big deal (and even if your kids say it's no big deal), it matters. And if you can't be there, trying matters. I don't remember a lot of the birthday gifts I got growing up or cookies I ate before dinner, but I vividly remember my mom and dad, in their work suits and jackets, walking into every game I ever played.
This Toddler Is So Unimpressed by Her New Baby Brother, and We Don’t Like Change Either
Listen, change is hard. Full-grown adults have a hard time adapting to new traditions, particularly ones they didn't choose for themselves. So, who can honestly blame this adorable North Carolina toddler for her less-than-thrilled reaction when presented with the ultimate switcheroo? As her newborn baby brother is placed on her lap, the little girl stares blankly, indifferently even, into the camera.
She doesn't cradle the baby in her arms - she doesn't even move a muscle, almost as if to make it abundantly clear she does not acknowledge this new addition to the family. Despite requests to kiss the baby, she stays true to her feelings until the video cuts out.
This encounter is sure to give any parents planning to expand their families a case of nervous laughter, but we're sure she'll acknowledge her brother's existence eventually. Right?
Chrissy Teigen on Her Postbaby Body: "I Don't Have to Be a Swimsuit Model Anymore"
As a mom of two, Chrissy Teigen is no stranger to what happens to your body after you have children. And while she often wonders how a teeny baby can cause your body to change so drastically, she's come to accept that her experience is par for the course of motherhood.
"Every morning when I look at myself in the mirror, I'm like, 'Oh my gosh, how did it get here?' My baby was, like, four pounds and I gained, like, sixty pounds, and that seems off!" she told Good Housekeeping. "But, you know, I think everyone's body is just really different. That's why, my posts of real mom sh*t, and wearing the diaper, and having that mesh thing, and real postpartum business? I think as important as it is for people to see me do that, it's also really important for me."
While we can't get enough of Chrissy's honest takes on social media, she knows she's not the only one facing challenges in motherhood.
"I think, in a way, we've forgotten what a regular body looks like," explained the 33-year-old mom. "There are people out there who are struggling and I'm struggling, and it's okay to come to terms with that being okay, to realize that it's gonna be a bit of a journey."
She added that although she knows getting back to her previous weight will take time, she's doesn't let her physical appearance determine how happy she is. "It's all about trying to be happy with myself," she said. "Because I'm not blind: I see my body, I see the difference in shape, I see that I gained weight. But I also see with those same eyes that I have a beautiful baby boy, and this little girl that's relentless and amazing, and I am very happy."
And while Chrissy flourished in her career as a supermodel, she admitted that she's ready to wear other hats. "This is a new thing that I can change within my mind, that I don't have to be a swimsuit model anymore," she said. "I get to be a mommy, and I get to cook, and I get to meet incredible people, and I'm happy to be going through this transition."
I Never Believed in Meditation, but It Was the Only Thing That Helped My Anxiety During Pregnancy
I've suffered from anxiety since college and was prescribed medicine to take as needed for panic attacks. I rarely ever need the medication, but there are definitely times it's necessary to keep my sanity. So when my husband and I began talking about having a baby, I wasn't superthrilled with the idea of taking certain medications while pregnant.
My doctor said taking my small prescribed dose while pregnant if I was having a full blown panic attack outweighed the stress my body goes through when experiencing such high levels of anxiety. But since I still didn't want to have to take anything, I needed to find a way to keep my anxiety at bay during what should be a joyful (but was also kinda stressful) time in my life. That's when I found meditation.
Being pregnant for the first time comes with a lot of unknowns, and I don't do well with unknowns. I'm a planner. I like to know what's happening. But every pregnancy is different, and we can only predict what may happen from one moment to the next. This was hard for me, and I found myself constantly falling into a hole of "what ifs." What if there's something wrong? What if I have a panic attack when I go into labor? What if I'm not a good mother? And the scariest - what if I lose the baby? All these questions did was fuel my anxiety, and in order to push them away, I had to focus in on myself through meditation.
I learned to acknowledge my fears and anxieties and then . . . let them go.
I learned to meditate through using guided meditations. I downloaded podcasts, videos, and audio books on meditation and began to find my groove. Most begin with focusing on your breathing, then move to scanning your body for tension and your mind for stressful thoughts. I learned to acknowledge my fears and anxieties and then . . . let them go. I started to feel so peaceful during the meditations and slowly, the peacefulness carried over into my daily life. I wasn't just calm while meditating; I was calm whenever stressful situations arose.
For my next pregnancy, I found a medical childbirth hypnosis program, which was based on the foundation of meditation I used during my first pregnancy. I was able to still my body and mind and take in the affirmations and cues from the meditative hypnosis tracks, which gave me the most wonderful pregnancy I could have hoped for.
I never would have thought that meditation was for me. I was an anxious, on-the-go planner, and the thought of sitting still and taking deep breaths just seemed like a waste of time. But I was so pleasantly surprised to find that it's exactly what I needed to quiet my anxiety and have a healthy pregnancy and now life.
This Woman's Experience Growing Up Poor Will Change Your Perspective on What Truly Matters
Nicole Johnson, a mom and blogger at Suburban Sh*t Show, knows that money isn't everything when it comes to raising well-adjusted kids. She explained how growing up poor didn't define who she was in an emotional Facebook post, and it's the reminder we all need that love doesn't cost anything.
"I read an article today about being poor," she wrote. "The woman who raised me - the one who was not my mother by blood but was by the graciousness of the universe who brought us together - she was poor. She lived in the projects raising three kids, if you don't include me and my brother - but you should because we weren't cheap."
Nicole remembers that the woman who raised her clearly struggled with her finances, but she never let it get the best of her.
"I remember watching her count the money from the bank after she'd cash a check," said Nicole. "I remember the white envelope it came in and the way the young teller placed it in the drawer before pushing it out toward my not mother mother's big old car. The one always in need of repair. Sometimes she would have just enough gas to get from here to there. And she loved those damn nearly done cars. The ones painted in hideous mustard yellow or with a million and one miles."
And while not having a ton of money definitely raised some problems for her, Nicole's guardian made sure her financial circumstances didn't get in the way of her general happiness.
"For now, they are getting exactly what they need. Don't worry, mama. You are doing fine - just fine."
"She didn't care about beauty or brand names. She cared about survival with five kids - as a single mom," explained Nicole. "She cared about Jeopardy and reading - even though she'd never gone to college. She cared about laughter and crying until it came. She cared about spending her last dollar on silly putty, though it would have been better spent on bread. She cared little about being poor, though she understood it was an inconvenience."
Despite the fact the woman in question lived paycheck to paycheck most of the time, she did everything she could to save for a home. Eventually, she found a place to call her very own.
"And she saved for her first home. A mobile home she bought with her son," she said. "And it was hers - with well water and a front porch with a rocking chair across from a grandson she loved and with a driveway for the big mustard yellow car."
The bottom line? You can be an amazing parent regardless of what your bank statement says.
"She was poor. And I preferred her home, her company above all others," she wrote. "Being poor does not dictate who you are. And it does not define who you are as a mother or how much your kids love you. I just want any mamas out there who are struggling with finances to know this. Someday they will understand how much you love them, how much you struggle just to get by. And they will know how to get by too - if they ever need to. But for now they are just busy being your kid. For now, they are getting exactly what they need. Don't worry, mama. You are doing fine - just fine."

If You Do This 1 Disney World Vacation Hack, You're Guaranteed to Have the Best Time
Planning a trip to Disney World can feel like an overwhelming task. Sure, it's fun and truly makes everyone's dreams come true (it's the happiest place on Earth, after all), but getting there and feeling like you're getting the most out of your trip can be anxiety-inducing. There are a million tips out there for how to plan a Disney vacation the right way, but trying to incorporate all those tips might just increase your stress levels more than assuage them.
So, from a mom who's been there, here's the one and only hack you really need to make your trip to Disney World as unforgettable as you hope it'll be: focus on booking three things - lodging, dining, and FastPass+ - as early as the park will allow; then let the rest go. As my mom reminded me before my daughter's first trip to Disney, "If you go on three rides, it will still be the best day of her life." I agree, but getting on the rides she wanted, plus having a place to eat and sleep is kind of important, too.
Here's the bare minimum of what you need to stress about to make your trip as magical as possible. Focus on these three things, and you're golden.
Lodging
Start researching your Disney resort options as soon as you know you're planning a trip. There are so many places to stay within Walt Disney World at a wide range of price points that move depending on demand, so do your research to find the right spot for your family. If you're booking your lodging online, you can't do so until Disney releases the next year's rates, which is usually in August of the previous year (for example, if you're going in February 2019, you won't be able to book until August 2018).
However, you can call Disney before that and make a room-only reservation. They will charge you for a single night based on this year's rate, and then automatically adjust your reservation once the 2019 pricing is released. At that point, you can also convert your room-only reservation into a Disney Vacation Package reservation, adding dates, dining packages, and discounted park tickets. You'll also be able to customize your complimentary Magic Bands through your reservation.
Dining
You can reserve dining at all the Disney table-service restaurants up to 180 days in advance, which is a big win when it comes to planning your travels. The most popular restaurants - the Magic Kingdom's Cinderella's Royal Table and Be Our Guest (the only restaurant that serves alcohol in the park), and all character dining experiences in Epcot, Hollywood Studios, and Animal Kingdom - will book up quickly during high-traffic times, so book as soon as possible. Some restaurants will require that you pay for your meal when you reserve, but if you have to cancel later, they'll give you a refund.
FastPass+
Your FastPass+ is your get-out-of-line free card for each park, so use them wisely. Each member of your group can book up to three Fastpass+ credits for each day, so you'll want to get the most out of them. Do some research into what rides and attractions are can't-misses for your group, prioritizing Fastpass+ for those with the longest lines. Then, try to book them as early as you can (30 days in advance, or 60 days for those staying at a resort hotel). The most popular rides and character meetings book up quickly, so mark your calendar.
Be sure to read the FastPass+ fine print, as some of the parks (such as Epcot) have tiered systems that restrict the use of more than one Fastpass+ in a top tier (you will have to choose between Frozen Ever After and Soarin'), whereas others (like Animal Kingdom) may make you choose between certain high-demand rides (such as Avatar Flight of Passage and Na'vi River Journey).
Also, be aware of the times you're booking for your FastPass+ credits, as well. Once you use all three FastPass+ in one day, you'll be able to book more while you're in the park, which means that if all your reservations are scheduled before early afternoon, you'll have plenty of time to score a couple more. However, mornings (usually before 11 a.m.) are the slowest time at the parks, so arrive early enough (take advantage of Extra Magic Hours if you're staying on the property), and you might be able to get on your favorite rides without waiting in line anyway. Strategy is key.

NYC's Top Tattoo Artist Reveals the Ink Everyone Will Be Getting in 2019
Bold, larger-than-life tattoos have always had a place for the David Beckhams, Justin Biebers, and Hells Angels members of the world, but the biggest trend in body art these last few years has been exponentially smaller and more delicate. Now, the artist that gave "tiny tattoos" its mass appeal says ink in 2019 will bridge the gap between old and new, meeting somewhere in the middle of the size spectrum.
"Fine-line work has been popular for many years, and recently artists have become more willing to do it and move out of the comfort zone of large, pulled line work," said tattooist Keith "Bang Bang" McCurdy, who's worked with everyone from Rihanna to Kendall Jenner and Hailey Baldwin. "As these tattoos become common, it will become more trendy to get larger, more intricate works. As tattoos become more acceptable, people will be less apprehensive to tattoo more of their body."
Ready for some inspiration? Ahead, the raddest takes on the modern fine-line tattoo.
Dolly Parton Has Been a Blond Bombshell For 73 Years, and We Have Proof
It seems like Dolly Parton has been living by the phrase "The bigger the hair, the closer to God" for nearly five decades. The bubbly blonde has been a hair and makeup inspiration and isn't afraid to admit her love of all things beauty-related. She's never denied her penchant for cosmetic procedures, gladly experiments with colorful makeup, and encourages everyone to do whatever makes them feel most confident by living by example. The singer has had a bevy of looks over the years, but she's always seen with blond hair, an impressive amount of volume, and a smile on her face.
No matter how many times she sings it, we don't believe any girl (even Jolene) was able to steal her man. Ahead you'll see how Parton's look has changed over the years.
Yep, This Is Actually How Often You Should Be Washing Your Hair
Most men do it every day. Selena Gomez does it twice a week. Kim Kardashian goes five full days without it. (And we don't even want to know Sophie Turner's number.) How often you wash your hair, it seems, boils down to personal preference. Right?
Not so fast. The answer to that question is murky, but can be summed up in four words: for the most part - but there are a few factors to keep in mind. First, there's the issue of stripping your scalp of its natural oils when you overwash. "Then, you must consider your hair type, texture, scalp condition, damage, and the style you wear," said Kevin Mancuso, hairstylist and global creative director for Nexxus. Oh, and don't forget your environment. ("If you live in a polluted city, you're going to want to wash your hair more frequently than you probably do.")
So, how often should you "do" it? We asked a handful of pros for their opinion, so you can consider the search, well, done.
Brandon Truaxe, Founder of Skincare Brand Deciem, Has Died
Brandon Truaxe, the founder of cult skincare brand Deciem, has died, an executive at the company confirmed to Vox. An email was sent by CEO Nicola Kilner to the staff stating Truaxe died over the weekend.
Deciem became a fan favorite for the affordable and effective skincare products they created; they touted themselves as the "Abnormal Beauty Company." Truaxe made headlines within the beauty community this past year for his erratic social media posts on Deciem's Instagram account. In October 2018, a judge ousted him as CEO and appointed Kilner to the position, a decision made after Estée Lauder - a minority shareholder in the company - took legal action against Truaxe after he made series a accusations regarding the company's operations.
Truaxe was 40 years old. We'll keep this post updated as the story develops.
This Brand Customized My Shampoo Based on My Workouts, and I’ve Never Felt So Seen
Attention to detail is everything. It's at the core of Prose's Custom Hair Care ($53) system, and the reason why I have silky soft, bouncy, mermaid waves right now.
It starts with a very extensive survey on the brand's website. The very first question is, "What is the texture of your natural hair when you let it air dry?" and the answer choices go beyond fine, medium, or coarse. It has graphics - a set of five images that illustrate different waves and curl types. The questionnaire also doesn't just take into account your hairstyling habits, but everything that makes up your lifestyle. It asks you about your diet (with a choice to select "unrestricted"), what kind of exercises you like to do (I selected "outdoor workouts"), and your zip code (which the brand uses to figure out what "environmental aggressors" might affect your hair).
When actually getting into the nitty-gritty of customizing my hair care, I was able to pick whether or not my products had gluten in it, along with my preferences on it being vegan and having silicone. Plus, I was able to choose my fragrance, Elixir - a blend of floral notes and vanilla.
When the box finally arrived, my shampoo and conditioner were labeled with some of the specifications I'd made on my survey, like my love for exercise (the words "Fitness-Lover" were written on it) and my zip code. I tested the shampoo and conditioner that evening and was delighted that the Elixir fragrance didn't smell like flowers, but instead, exactly like the mineral sunscreen I'd used as a kid. I was surprised to feel how lightweight the formulas were, as my medium-coarse curls usually require more emollient formulas. The shampoo exploded into an airy lather and slipped out of my hair when I rinsed. The conditioner slid down each of my strands with ease.
When I hopped out of the shower, I let my hair air dry and the results were astonishing. It was incredibly soft and smooth, the way it would feel after a salon-mixed conditioning treatment. My waves had a bounce to them that they typically don't, and it was so shiny.
The entire system will run you $53, and while that may be more than you would normally spend on your hair, as Jennifer Lopez once said: love don't cost a thing.
The 5 Best Shampoos for Scalp Psoriasis, According to a Dermatologist
For some people, buying shampoo isn't always a super involved process. For others, it's a little more complicated, especially if you have scalp psoriasis.
Scalp psoriasis is a common skin condition in which red, itchy patches and scales form on the area due to a buildup of skin cells. Irritation is a common side effect, which is why those suffering from the condition often have to look out for specific types of shampoos and treatments to use as a way to combat it. That includes using formulas with medicated ingredients or products that include coal tar, an active that helps slow down the production of excess skin cells.
We asked a certified dermatologist Joshua Zeichner, MD, which shampoos are among the best for treating scalp psoriasis - read ahead to find a few of his picks (and some of our favorites, too).
Here's How Apple Cider Vinegar Can Completely Brighten Your Skin
Yes, it has a pungent smell - let's just get that out of the way. But before you knock apple cider vinegar pads for, well, having apple cider vinegar (which has a punchy, sour scent) in them, consider how much they can completely brighten your complexion.
From the beginning, I was skeptical about using Volition Apple Cider Vinegar Resurfacing Peel Pads ($64 for a 30-pack). Aside from my wariness of its fragrance, I have sensitive skin, and to me, the combo of the phrases "apple cider vinegar" and "peel pads" screamed, "This will burn your skin off." You can imagine my surprise when I read the brand's claims that it would actually hydrate, and that - along with the promise of balanced skin - is what prompted me to try it out.
I cleansed my face and patted it dry before ripping open the single packet that contained the pad. I slipped my fingers into the peel pad's sleeve and began sweeping it across my face. On the first night I tested it, I felt a slight tingle along my cheeks and temples, which was comparable to the way my skin feels when I use any other peel that contains exfoliating AHAs and glycolic acid. That tingle started to subside a week later during the third time I used it, and by that point, my skin was already noticeably smoother.
I've been using these pads for three weeks, and my skin - and nose - have acclimated to the pads, which is a great thing considering how it's changed my skin. My complexion is brighter, and my skin feels tighter and silky smooth. See the magical pads ahead.
The Pros and Cons of a Dip Powder Manicure
Within the last 20 years, gel and acrylic manicures have been rising in popularity because they can last up to two weeks. But now there is a new manicure on the block: dip-powdered nails! Although dip powder manicures seem like a new trend, the technique has been around since the 1980s.
The process of getting a dip manicure is different than other manicures you've experienced. Unlike gel, which requires UV rays to cement the polish, or acrylic, dipped manicures use pigmented powder. First, a base coat and a sealant is applied from a small container of the color you've selected. A nail technician will then paint on both coats, shaping it to the contours of your nail. Some brands claim that the products are "healthy" for the nail, as there are vitamins within the formulas. The manicure can sometimes last up to a month, but just how healthy is it?
The first thing to watch out for is the method by which the powder is applied. Some nail technicians will dip your nails directly into the container - this is how the manicure earned its name - versus painting the pigment on with a brush. This is unsanitary because of germs that can be picked up on the nail from dipping it into the bottle. If you choose to get this manicure done, make sure your manicurist is actually painting on the base, pigment, and sealant coats, not dipping.
Rita Pinto, founder of the popular luxury nail salon Vanity Project, which combines high-end nail art and video program, refuses to do dip powder manicures because of these sanitation risks.
"Dip powders are temporarily damaging to the nails as the seal layer of your nails is broken in the process of this type of manicure," said Josephine Allen, a nail technician a Samuel Shriqui Salon, which also boasts being Essie's flagship store. "Dip powders also tend to temporally dehydrate the nails."
If you're already addicted to dip manis, don't fret, there are no long-term effects. While Allen said that the dip powders aren't necessarily healthier than other types of manicures, the products are not permanently damaging.
"The root of the nails will not be damaged in the process and a new layer of nail will continue to grow," she told us.
If you do choose to get one, Allen recommends using paper wraps. "A manicure involving paper wrapping the free edge of the nails can last up to two weeks," she said. "This manicure is healthier for the nails and it won't be roughened in the process."
Another thing to keep in mind is that dip powders are not that far off from acrylic and gel. Because dip powders are made up of grains of pigment, they have more intense colors. This is different from acrylic nails that involve a liquid and a powder that bond to form a gel. Like acrylics, gel manicures are also a liquid that hardens when it comes into contact with a UV light. And with dip powders, a manicurist will use a glue that contains cyanoacrylate (think Krazy Glue, but for your nails) to get it to stick on the nail.
As with gel and acrylic manicures, the removal process with a dip powder manicure is key. Generally all three types of manicures will require that you soak off the product, which can sometimes be time-consuming. But don't rush it! Patience is key, so you don't damage the top layer of your nails.

The #10YearChallenge Is Harder on Women Than You Think
One of the first internet challenges to go viral this year on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter is #HowHardDidAgingHitYou, or the #10YearChallenge. The challenge requires users to share a photo from 10 years ago side-by-side with a current photo. Millennials and Gen-Zers have participated with gusto - mostly because their decade-old picture is of awkward pubescence or wide-eyed youth, and though they are older, they are still "young." But this activity is likely a lot less fun for older women - especially those without access to a glam squad, or cosmetic procedures - because it reduces conversations about age to physical appearances. Recently, prize-winning French writer Yann Moix (age 50) sparked outrage for his, well, outrageous comments on:
- How he was "incapable" of loving women over 50.
- How they were "invisible" to him (they are "too, too old").
- And the pièce de résistance, "[t]he body of a 25-year-old woman is extraordinary. The body of a woman of 50 is not extraordinary at all".
The reality is that aging hits women harder than men in many aspects of modern life. In light of the way this year has begun, it's a good time to reflect on how women and men are forced to age differently.
How aging actually hits women is far more insidious than feeling bad about wrinkles and stray grays (though that is harmful enough).
Let's start with appearance. For women, concerns with body image encompass being told we should look eternally youthful. We are taught to live at war with our age. The near-constant message we receive is to prevent and deny everything about aging. Lie about the number. Gray roots are dreadful. Your face must be as creaseless as a freshly starched shirt. Any natural signs of getting older are embarrassing and need to be combated immediately - from the smallest sag to the tiniest droop. Social media has been fundamental in perpetuating unrealistic body images, enabling and encouraging us to be constant voyeurs, and perpetuating Facetuned (touched-up) images that are unrealistic. Studies suggest this obsession has exacerbated mental health issues in younger users fixated on their body image, and it certainly doesn't help adult women feel better about themselves, either. Through targeted ads, Facebook and Instagram have profited from and enriched corporations that promise to help you regain your radiance (apparently, only the young are radiant) by erasing fine lines and wrinkles overnight. Booming market capitalizations owe much to the pillaging of women's insecurities.
I'm all for women making their own decisions, including about their bodies. Like every woman, I have internalized many social expectations around gender and age, and am certainly not shaming anyone for facelifts or Botox. These choices say little about them, but do speak volumes about the world we inhabit. In her book Hunger, Roxane Gay asks, "[W]hat does it say about our culture that the desire for weight loss is considered a default feature of womanhood?" Social media challenges like #HowHardDidAgingHitYou enable this culture to thrive, such that the desire to look young has also become a default feature of womanhood.
How aging actually hits women is far more insidious than feeling bad about wrinkles and stray grays (though that is harmful enough). Older women face increased discrimination at the workplace, with gender-based mistreatment peaking for women in their 40s.They also suffer a hiring disadvantage. Older women get fewer callbacks than older men, or younger applicants of both sexes, seriously hampering their retirement security. As far as Hollywood is concerned, Amy Schumer's Last F*ckable Day sketch encapsulates how a woman's employability is directly tied to her sexual currency. Other biases around older women include the perception of them as sexless, even though sexual ability does not decrease with age for women.
A social change in our attitude toward aging - including dissociating it from physical appearances - is crucial for both women and men. But the myopic #10YearChallenge excludes the more profound experiences of growth and change that accompany getting older. Perhaps shows like Big Little Lies and movies like The Favourite and Girls Trip, all starring women in their 40s and older, are signaling a shift in the way that women are represented. Nonetheless, older women remain at a social disadvantage - even our everyday language is more ageist toward women. A simple way to make getting older more holistic and inclusive for all women could be to rebrand it as the #LookHowFarYouHaveComeChallenge. This might seem trivial, but a linguistic overhaul may spark the cultural change we need.

We Used a $5 Food Strainer to Clean Our Makeup Brushes, but Did It Work?
I tried cleaning my makeup brushes with my $5 food strainer, and the results were unexpected. Houston-based makeup artist @stellarmakeupartistry posted the below video of her cleansing her brushes with the kitchen tool with the caption: "I couldn't find one of them rubber thingys to wash my brushes. So when i was in line at @marshalls i got desperate and grabbed this lil strainer💡 and it worked amazing!"
After seeing how simple her hack was, I had to put it to the test. I chose the brushes I used the most - a small blending brush that I use to get powder highlighter under my brow bone, Sigma Beauty High Cheekbone Highlighter Brush ($20), and Sigma Beauty Flat Kabuki Makeup Brush ($25), which I use to apply my liquid foundation and BB Cream - to put the hack to the test.
I ran each brush under my running faucet, dipped them in my usual makeup brush cleansing liquid (a mixture of olive oil and dish soap), and swirled the brush around in the strainer the way Stellar had in her video. I swished the fibers around for about three to five seconds before rinsing, checking to see if there was still glitter and flesh-toned liquid caked in them.
For the brushes that were doused in my powder makeup, it only took a few seconds to get them completely clean. For the Flat Kabuki, I noticed that its fibers didn't want to let go of the caked-on liquid bases, so I spent a full five minutes swirling and wringing out the fibers.
Ultimately, Stellar's trick worked, but it's important to note that different textures will cling on for longer and may require a little more moxie. See our test of the viral hack ahead.

Kendall Jenner Gets Real About Her "Debilitating" Acne in Her Latest Instagram Post
"My goal is to open up a dialogue around skin positivity," Kendall Jenner said. In her latest Instagram post, the 23-year-old model and Keeping Up With the Kardashians star discussed her experience with acne.
She captioned a photo of her with her hair wrapped in a towel and seemingly clear skin: "While there are much bigger problems happening in the world, suffering from acne for me was debilitating. It's something that I've dealt with since I was a young teen and has caused me to feel anxious, helpless, and insecure. As humans, I don't think we share our insecurities enough because we live in a time where being 'perfect' is the standard. We curate our life online and pick the pretty moments to post. I'd like to show a younger generation that not everything is perfect. Being insecure about my acne gave me thick skin but I wouldn't ever wish that feeling upon anyone so after trying countless options, I found something that has been helpful in maintaining clear skin for me. It's been a long journey but I'm excited for where my skin is now. I didn't think I'd see the day where I would feel confident posting a makeup free picture."
Jenner is ProactivMD's newest ambassador, and in her promotional video for the brand (which debuted during the Golden Globes), she opens up about how comments made about her acne had overshadowed her confidence at an award show she'd attended. "I felt so good I completely forgot that I had bad skin," she said.

This Is the Year I'm Finally Going to Take Care of My Skin Like an Adult
Working here at POPSUGAR, I'm constantly exposed to the latest and greatest in beauty products, with experts all around me. So, it's even more embarrassing to admit that in 2018, there were many nights I'd go to bed without removing my makeup and giving my skin the care it deserves. I know, not great. But, new year, new me, right?! I am proud to say that - save for one night because I'm only human - I have washed my face and done some kind of skincare routine every single night before bed. Plus, this forced ritual has even made me much more diligent about my morning skin care. I want to start and end the day with a fresh face in 2019.
The key I've found to actually sticking to my resolution? Keeping it simple. There's no 10-step routine for me - just the basics, and a few extras where you think you need help. For me, I have hyperpigmentation and acne scars, so I'm working to combat that. Plus, I'm all about a good glow. I never want to be matte, personally, so vitamin C is a critical part of my morning routine. Lastly, it's Winter, so the air is dry and cold. I need to be moisturized at all times, and that includes my lips, hands, and neck. If you've decided that now is the time to get your skin in order, here are the products to keep you glowing well into 2019.

Full disclosure: even though I work in beauty, I still love hitting the refresh button and seeing what's new at Sephora. Ariana Grande's "7 Rings" Hair Is Multiple Feet Long, and We've Lost Our Ability to Speak
Ariana Grande has taken her signature ponytail to the next level. For her new music video for "7 Rings," the singer's hair is seen in multiple updos, including a lengthy ponytail that extends down the steps she's lying on and out of the frame.
Her other looks for the video are just as dramatic. You'll see her in pink space buns adorned with jewels that flow into pin-straight hair, a black ribbon tied into a large bow atop her head, and, of course, her trademark pony. Ahead, check out Grande's best hair looks in the video, since she basically snatched the wigs right off of ours.
The Strongest Beauty Trend of 2019 Is Workout-Inspired Makeup
Fitness-inspired beauty is proving to be one of 2019's biggest beauty trends, as brands are rolling out products that are high-impact with tremendous staying power and endurance.
Take CoverGirl, for example. The brand has recently launched its Active line, which includes foundation, mascara, a cooling mist, and a liquid liner that is meant to last through your most intense, sweat-inducing workouts - a loaded claim, for sure, but it's one we've found to be especially true with its eyeliner. Wet n Wild has added glittering glamour to our active lifestyle with its Pump Collection - a 20-piece makeup, skin, and hair collection, each with exercise-inspired names. Most recently, Maybelline announced that it will be rolling out a collaboration with sportswear line Puma in February. The collection includes new iterations of its most long-lasting formulas.

Apparently, Sophie Turner Wasn't Allowed to Wash Her Hair When Filming Game of Thrones
While there's no question that it's good to be Sophie Turner - she stars as Sansa Stark on Game of Thrones and is engaged to a Jonas Brother, after all - she recently revealed that her life isn't always so glamorous. In an interview with InStyle, Turner disclosed that for a few years while filming Game of Thrones, she wasn't permitted to wash her hair. "For the first few seasons I was allowed to wash my hair because I was an aristocratic young girl," she explained. "Towards season 5 they started asking me to not wash my hair and it was really disgusting. For a couple of years, I was living with pretty greasy hair."
Luckily, the natural blonde now wears red wigs while filming so she can do whatever she'd like with her real hair. "[Now] I can wash my hair whenever I want, which is nice," she said. Thankfully, it seems no one realized Turner wasn't washing her hair until now. It also looked pretty damn good during the show, which you can see proof of ahead.
Benefit Cosmetics Just Won the 10-Year Challenge, and It's the Throwback We All Deserve
Ranked alongside your favorite pair of 501's and, of course, wine, you can add Benefit's Benebalm ($18) to the list of things that age well. The brand's Ireland Instagram account gave us a glimpse into its past by posting the below photo of the balm's glow-up as part of the 10-year challenge that is sweeping social media. The lip tint - which hydrates and leaves lips with a sheer rosy color - was available in a tiny jar labeled Benetint Lip Balm until the brand decided to repackage it into a travel-friendly, pink sleeve and refer to it simply as Benebalm.

Everything You Need to Know About Using Lush's Shower Bombs
"Late to bed and early to rise" - that's how I would describe my sleep schedule. It takes an extensive meditation session and laying under a weighted blanket to actually knock me out. I began googling things that could help ease my sleeplessness and came across Lush's Sleepy Shower Bomb ($4). The $4, cloud-shaped clump of soap carries with it the fragrance of one of the brand's bestselling products - the calm-inducing, lavender-scented Sleepy Body Lotion ($10).
I decided to test it out during my pre-bedtime shower. To use it, I pulled up Lush's 38-second "How to Use Shower Bombs" video - and it's a good thing that I did. Had I not watched the tutorial, I would have just dropped the cloud into my tub the way I would the brand's bath bombs. I learned very quickly that these bombs work very differently.
I placed it in the palm of my hand and ran it under the shower water until it softened. Then, I broke pieces of it off and rubbed it across my wet skin. In just a few swipes across my shoulders, the nugget I had pulled off of the cloud fizzed and broke down, creating a light and airy lather that was similar to shaving cream. Once I'd covered my entire body in lather - an easy feat since the tiny bomb exploded into more than enough - I rinsed it away. My skin felt silky soft, and indescribably smooth. My shower was filled with the scent of citrus and lavender, which I slowly and deeply inhaled. I instantly felt more relaxed, but after patting my skin dry and stepping out of my bathroom, I noticed the fragrance didn't linger on my skin. I slathered myself with Sleepy Body Lotion to keep the calm going and let the dreamy scent lull me to sleep.
See the bedtime essentials, ahead.

I Thought the Broken Capillaries on My Face Were Acne Scars - Here's How I Got Rid of Them
I don't have severe acne, but I've certainly had bouts of troublesome and angry skin from time to time, which led to scarring . . . or so I thought. The scarring wasn't major by any means, but being a keen skincare and facial enthusiast, I always noticed the red marks randomly dotted on my face. Turns out the scars didn't have anything to do with acne or spots - they were actually tiny broken capillaries.
Ever the guinea pig when it comes to trying any and every facial going, I jumped at the chance to try a treatment at Debbie Thomas's Clinic in Chelsea, London. Thomas is the facialist of Dua Lipa, Naomie Harris, and Jourdan Dunn, so I knew I was in pretty good hands at the salon.
Ahead, get a closer look at the treatment that got rid of my broken capillaries, and perhaps consider rethinking those harsh acne treatments before slathering them on like I did.
