My Husband Wanted to Name Our Baby After His Grandfather, and the Name Made Me Cringe

Bringing another human into this world is arguably the biggest responsibility you will ever take on. Giving that tiny human a name is a close second. After all, that name can be the basis of someone's first impression. It can be the source of taunts. And if you want to get unique, you could be subjecting your child to a lifetime of correcting people on its spelling or pronunciation. It may not seem like much to you, but as someone who has spent their entire life correcting just about everyone I meet (my name is pronounced Mar-EE-sa, not Marissa), I assure you that it gets old fast. So what happens when your partner is dead set on naming your child something that you hate? In our case, it was a battle of wills until fate stepped in.

Nothing I said or did was going to change his mind. For eight weeks, it was all we talked about. And during those eight weeks, neither of us budged.

When I was 12 weeks pregnant with our firstborn, the ultrasound technician confidently told my husband and I that we were expecting a boy. My husband's face lit up at the thought of having a son, who he was hell-bent on naming Joseph, after his grandfather. I have nothing against the name Joseph. In fact, I think it's a nice name. It's solid and classic . . . but it's also common. And at the time, when we were living in an area where many people prided themselves on their Italian heritage (my husband's family included), it was a little too common.

I tried explaining to my husband that given the area in which we lived, our son would always be one of umpteen Josephs in his class. I even offered up a yearbook from the school at which I was teaching so that he could go through and count all of the Josephs, Joes, and Joeys. But nothing I said or did was going to change his mind. For eight weeks, it was all we talked about. And during those eight weeks, neither of us budged. I was convinced that we would leave the hospital with a nameless child.

During our 20-week ultrasound, we were asked if we wanted to know the sex of our baby. We said we already knew we were having a boy. Well, we were wrong. The technician who had told us that we were having a boy did so prematurely. The 20-week scans confirmed from every angle that we were having a girl. I practically jumped off the table, and everyone in the office heard my shriek of excitement. Not only had I always dreamed of having a little girl, but now the weeks-long battle over a name was over. I had won by default.

Choosing a name for our daughter proved much easier since my husband wasn't interested in any female variations of Joseph. On the day she was born, we arrived at the hospital with two potential names and a plan to select one when we finally met our little girl. In the end, however, my husband got to see and hold her first. I heard him say his first hello, followed by her name. It was one of the two names we had chosen together, but the final decision was ultimately his, and I have no regrets. Not only does her name suit her, but one of our twins has the other name, and never was a baby more aptly named. I'd say that when it came down to choosing a name, we both won, and I wouldn't have it any other way.

Unless number four comes along and happens to be a boy. Then we'll be right back to square one.

I Hired a Doula For My Second Pregnancy, and It Was the Best Decision I Ever Made

Looking back on my second pregnancy, there were a lot of things I chose to do differently than with my first. But out of everything I changed, the best thing was the decision to get a doula. It's hard to put into words just how valuable my doula was to me and my birthing experience. Being a new mom is really hard, and when I think back to my first pregnancy, doing it without a doula made it even harder.

The first time around, I really didn't know what I was in for. I took a birthing class and religiously went to my doctor appointments, but on delivery day, I felt like I walked into the hospital totally unprepared. So when I got pregnant with my second child, I knew I wanted things to be different. That's when I found a doula. My doula embodied everything you'd want in the hospital room when you're bringing a new life into the world - she was kind, warm, supportive, and encouraging.

My mental health and happiness were her priority, and it felt so nice to have someone looking out for me.

Due to back injuries, I was unable to get an epidural during my first labor. I had no pain alternatives in place and screamed my head off for hours on end. For my second labor, I decided to practice self hypnosis, and my doula helped me with this. During the labor and birth, my doula was by my side reciting my hypnosis prompts. When my doctor began insisting on Pitocin to induce my labor, my doula was there to support my desire to hold off until absolutely necessary. She was my walking, talking, real-life birth plan. When my son was born, my doula helped me breastfeed him for the first time while also remembering to take out a camera and capture the beautiful memory for me. She did so many things, and I'm so grateful she was there.

Because my husband was by my side through both deliveries, he was also very grateful for our doula. It took some of the pressure off of him. All he had to worry about was staying by my side, massaging me, and supporting me however I needed it.

After the birth, my doula came to our home to check on me. While I saw my doctor and our pediatrician, this was a different type of check-up. She wanted to check on me as a mother, not a patient. She wanted to know how I was feeling, how I was hanging in there, and how I was adjusting to my new addition. My mental health and happiness were her priority, and it felt so nice to have someone looking out for me in that way when I was consumed with thinking of only my new baby. She reminded me that I matter, even in those first few hectic weeks after welcoming a child.

If you've been on the fence about hiring a doula, I highly recommend it. And if a doula doesn't fit well into your family budget, there are often doula students who need to take on clients for certification purposes. They get more experience, and you get more support, and when it comes to labor and delivery, take all of the support you can get!

Beyoncé is starting her year off strong with her first outfit post of the year. Fans of the singer will know she seldomly posts to Instagram, but every now and then, she'll decide to serve up some style inspiration. Beyoncé recently shared pictures from an impromptu photo shoot taken by her daughter, Blue Ivy Carter, and she's wearing a mesmerizing striped outfit that coordinates nicely with the artwork she's posing in front of. David and Victoria Beckham in His-and-Her Blazer Coats Prove Romance Isn't Dead

Victoria Beckham had the support of her family, plus Brooklyn's new girlfriend, Hana, when she stepped out to celebrate the launch of her new Reebok collection in NYC. While Brooklyn and Hana followed a few steps behind, David and Victoria led the way in their matching blazer coats. David went casual underneath - he wore Dr. Martens under rolled jeans, a white tee, and a gray hoodie - but Victoria's outfit confirmed she deserved all the attention.

The designer paired a snakeskin blouse and clutch with red trousers and heeled boots. Her own outerwear was a wool and mohair blend tuxedo coat from her namesake label, but any well-tailored, button-front jacket could've matched David's and aptly given us the heart eyes we have now. Read ahead to get inspired by the duo's coordination, then shop the look.

You Definitely Won't Find These Fancy Minnie Ears and Hats at Disneyland

And we thought those rose gold Minnie ears were fancy! Luxury milliner Gigi Burris recently collaborated with Disney on a flirty six-piece collection of hats and hair accessories entirely inspired by Minnie Mouse. Released on National Polka Dot Day - you bet it's a thing - on Jan. 22, the collection consists of four eye-catching hats and two headbands. The hats are pretty classic with whimsical flourishes like polka dots, pearls, and sequins. (Here's a neat detail: there's a pillbox hat inspired by the one Minnie wears in Disney's 1928 short Steamboat Willie.) The headbands, meanwhile, closely resemble the ears you might find at the parks . . . except way fancier.

With prices ranging from $265 to $410, the collection might not appeal to a casual Disney fan. One thing is certain, though: these designs sure are pretty! Check out the campaign, and shop the products ahead.

I Live in a Tiny NYC Apartment, and This Trunk Is Helping Me Live Like Marie Kondo

In 2019, I've resolved to get my home organized. But when you live in a very small apartment, keeping things neat and tidy becomes more of a necessity than a general goal. Closet and drawer space are scarce, and I needed someplace to put sweaters, books, and general odds and ends once shelf space was out of the question. In an attempt to Marie Kondo my life, I found this Beautify Storage 2 Piece Trunk Set ($106). And wow, is it a game changer.

My apartment is basically all white, with shades of gray and tan thrown in on occasion, so I wanted something minimal to match my decor. This trunk is just that: pristine white, and the pop of rose gold accent hardware makes it feel luxurious and much more expensive than it actually is. The fact that it comes with two trunks is ideal, because I can separate them into different categories and not get confused about which one I need to open. As an added bonus, next to my couch, it looks like a really chic makeshift end table. These pretty trunks come in four colors, so it'll be easy to find one that looks beautiful in your space, and trust me, you won't know how you lived without the extra storage.

A Step-by-Step Guide For Packing the KonMari Way

Before I completed Marie Kondo's KonMari Method of tidying up, I loathed packing for vacation. So much so, I would typically wait until 30 minutes before leaving for the airport to shove everything in a bag and fingers crossed, I would remember my toothbrush. But now that I am a convert for this organizational method, I've applied the same minimalist principles to my packing, and I'm never looking back. Here are some of the key takeaways so you too can pack joyfully.

Related: People Are Starting to Tidy Up Their Lives After Watching Marie Kondo's Netflix Show

Start with a suitcase that sparks joy.

During my tidying process, my parents actually got rid of my suitcases accidentally, but I took the opportunity to invest in a new set of ultra-lightweight, rolling suitcases in my favorite color: teal. Before I start packing, I unzip the bag, lay it flat on the floor, and check all pockets for possible remnants from the previous trip (usually cell phone chargers, etc.).

Fold your clothes the KonMari way.

Most of us learned to fold our clothes into thin rectangles and stack the items on top of one another vertically. The problem with this method is you always end up rummaging around your drawer (or in this case suitcase) looking for an item and leaving the whole thing a tangled wreck. Marie Kondo suggests rolling clothes in sort of a triangle shape that stands upright by itself. The clothes are then placed side-by-side horizontally, hugging one another. This makes it so that you can see every single item you own.

This is especially helpful when packing, because you can quickly see if you've forgotten something essential, i.e. underwear. When traveling, gone are the days you have to unload your whole suitcase to find that dang pair of PJs that found its way to the bottom of your bag. When packing, I go the extra mile and refold the clothes so they fit my suitcase perfectly. Then, I lay everything out on my bed (or the floor) until it's time to transfer to the suitcase.

Pull out shoes and accessories.

The KonMari Method is about asking yourself, "What sparks joy?" but when it comes to traveling, I ask myself, "What do I really, really need?" Oftentimes I'll end up putting away a couple of pairs of miscellaneous shoes or dresses and paring down to the bare minimum essentials, so I can zipper my suitcase without the expansion. That way, I know I have some room to spare to pack souvenirs during my trip.

Related: What No One Tells You About the KonMari Method

Save toiletries for last.

I leave a hole in the suitcase for my toiletry bag. Meanwhile, I gather my essential toiletries and keep them in plain view on a bathroom counter so I can use them until the last minute. Placing all of the items in a horizontal row (like your clothes) also helps you do a mental checklist before packing them away.

Now that you're all packed up, remember to keep things tidy as you travel! I stash my dirty clothes (still folded) on one side of my bag away from the clean. For whatever reason, this also helps make unpacking a lot easier. You can toss all the dirty clothes in a hamper while transferring the clean, folded clothes back to your drawers.

Here's my list for a weekend trip (as pictured):

  • 3 shirts
  • 2 shorts
  • 3 workout outfits
  • 1 sweatshirt
  • 1 dress
  • 1 jacket (I wear when traveling)
  • 3 pairs of underwear
  • 1 swimsuit
  • 3 pairs of socks
  • 1 pair of tennis shoes
  • 1 pair of sandals
  • 1 pair of wedges/heels
  • 1 bag of toiletries
  • 1 hat
  • 1 pair of sunglasses

This Woman Really Wanted to Know the Name of the Cat in the Window Across the Street, and His Owner Delivered

"Curiosity killed the cat," or in the case of this hilariously viral Twitter moment, curiosity led to the name of the cat across the street. Erika Strong, an employee at Shopify in Toronto, works in a building across the street from residential apartments, where one white cat lives and spends his days staring out the window that looks right into her office. After a while, Erika and a coworker got curious about the cute little cat's name, so Erika got crafty.

"Every day I stare out the window @shopify at a cat in someone's apartment. Weeks ago @_myles and I asked what its name was," Erika shared on Twitter, alongside a photo of her window with lines of individual Post-Its that read, "What is your cat's name?" A second photo shows the cat sitting next to a piece of paper with his name, Marshall, printed on it. "Today they obliged and we've never been happier."

Happiness is an adorable kitty, am I right? See some of the sweet reactions to Erica's solved mystery ahead, and help her decide: "What's the next question we should ask Marshall?"

I Can't Stop Laughing at These Reactions to Catwalk, a Documentary About Cat Shows

Attention, my fellow crazy cat ladies: the only thing that matters as of this very moment is the fact that Netflix has a documentary film about cat shows in Canada, called Catwalk: Tales From the Cat Show Circuit. The documentary, which follows cat show parents competing for the title of Canada's top cat and, thus, the ultimate bragging rights, is an hour and 15 minutes of pure fluff - and not the filler kind of fluff, but actual glorious cat fluff that you'll wish you could bury your face into.

Welp, I know what I'll be watching tonight . . . with my cats.

Since the film hit Netflix, the cat people of Twitter can't stop talking about the beauty that is cat pageantry and, in particular, one of the documentary's subjects, a very furry orange kitty named Oh La La. Ahead, see some of the funniest reactions to the documentary, as well as its trailer, and watch Catwalk for yourself on Netflix.

Sonic Is Launching Fried Oreos With Ice Cream, and I'm Feeling Things I've Never Felt Before

I can hardly contain my excitement over this news: deep-fried Oreos A La Mode are making their way to Sonic Drive-In locations. If you're a fan of the state fair staple, you know there's nothing quite like the feeling of crunching into this classic dessert and embracing the ooey-gooey Oreo center. Usually, I'd wait until Summer for a sugary-sweet rush like this, but starting Jan. 29, Sonic guests can get their hands on the treat a few months early.

Sonic's decadent battered Oreo treat is made for dipping and will be served alongside the chain's signature ice cream. And good news - the A La Mode snacks aren't just limited to Oreos. You can order warm Cinnabon Cinnasnacks if you're in the mood for a flaky pastry instead. At $3 each, don't be surprised if you catch me camped out in the drive-in until the deal ends on March 4. Run, don't walk, to grab these over-the-top treats!

This Bride Traveled the Globe in Her Wedding Dress and Took the Dreamiest Photos Along the Way

While some brides may spend days weeks agonizing over what to pack for their honeymoon, Zoe Aust likely didn't have too much trouble prepping for her post-wedding getaway - because she planned to spend most of it in her wedding dress. Zoe, who runs the Instagram account @MarryMeInTravel with her husband, Nick, rewore her white wedding gown in 33 different countries during a yearlong honeymoon. Talk about getting bang for your buck!

After exchanging "I do"s on Dec. 31, 2017, Nick and Zoe left behind their jobs in the United States to embark on a journey around the globe, making pit stops everywhere from Paris to Positano and Sydney to Singapore. In each city, Zoe posed for stunning photos while wearing her beaded Watters gown, often styling it according to her surroundings. She trudged through the snow, rode a bicycle, walked through deserts, and yep, even swam in the dress, making for some seriously breathtaking pictures (and proving that her gown is essentially indestructible).

"Life is too short to only wear your wedding dress once."

While speaking to People magazine about her adventures, Zoe told the publication, "Life is too short to only wear your wedding dress once. And the world is too big to only stay in your little town your whole life. Our hope is that when people see our pictures they feel nothing but inspired to explore a new place, try a new hobby, and fulfill that dream they've always had." Keep reading to admire all the beautiful footage from their yearlong voyage, and you'll most definitely feel overcome with that aforementioned sense of inspiration.

Disney's New Star Wars Ride Might Be 28 Minutes Long, and the Video Preview Is Insane!

All the hype around Disney's upcoming Star Wars land has led to some high expectations, and new footage suggests we have no reason to lower them. The creative masterminds behind Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge released a behind-the-scenes video that shares new details and visuals from the epic land and its rides, which will be up and running this Summer at Disneyland and Disney World.

The ride, entitled Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance, is the biggest reason to get excited because it's "the most epic attraction we've ever built," said Scott Trowbridge, a creative executive at Disney Imagineering. It "invites you to be a recruit of the resistance to stand up against the First Order," and, um, it's reportedly a whopping 28 minutes long.

The employees in the video didn't disclose the length of the ride, but a blogger for Disney and More claims that it will have a 28-minute runtime. Packed with special effects, twists, and turns, the ride will put you right in the middle of the Star Wars magic. Worth the inevitable wait in line? Definitely. Watch the video above to get a full rundown of Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge, and then look back on some of the early photos of the destination.
