These 3 Habits Can Kick-Start Your Weight Loss Without Your Feeling Stressed or Deprived

The idea of losing weight can feel intimidating and even discouraging, especially if you've tried to do so unsuccessfully before. But getting started will be much less stressful when you manage your expectations and make simple changes, rather than diving into crash diets or punishing workouts.

Becky Kerkenbush, MS, RD, a registered dietitian in Watertown, WI, suggests setting a realistic weight-loss goal of one-half to two pounds per week, and adding a separate goal to the mix to help keep your spirits up when the scale doesn't reflect the work you've put in. "Examples include working to run a mile without stopping or becoming more flexible by starting yoga," Becky told POPSUGAR.

Eric Bowling, an NASM-certified personal trainer at Ultimate Performance in Los Angeles, added that you should also pinpoint your why for any goals you set. "Mindset is everything, and understanding why you want to make any change in the first place is key," Eric said.

"If you just want to lose 10 pounds because you dislike the number you see on the scale, you probably won't stick to your plan for long," he explained. "If you dig deeper and find that losing 10 pounds will make you more confident, a better spouse, more energetic, or able to do athletic events again, you will start to grow the driving factor behind what makes you take action." Once you know what you're working toward, these simple steps can help put you on the path to get there.

Eat a Balanced Diet

Consuming too few calories can leave you feeling deprived, lethargic, and unhappy - none of which is a recipe for success. "Starving yourself can also result in a slowed metabolism, making weight loss more difficult," Becky said. "It's best not to go longer than four to five hours without something to eat, be it a meal or a snack."

This includes starting your day with a healthy breakfast, which when eaten within an hour of waking can jump-start your metabolism, Becky explained. "Selecting a balanced breakfast that includes healthy fat, sufficient protein, and whole grains will provide energy and a feeling of satiety, which may prevent overeating later on," she said.

At every meal, "build your diet around nutrient-dense, single-ingredient whole foods like lean meat, fibrous vegetables, healthy fats, and complex carbohydrates," Eric added. "Prioritize protein, which helps preserves muscle mass for anyone aiming to improve their body shape rather than just simply losing weight. Women should aim to eat between 20 and 30 grams of protein per meal."

Becky stressed the importance of not cutting out entire categories of foods, which may result in nutrient deficiencies. "Diets that omit whole food groups rarely result in long-term outcomes," she said.

Get Moving

It'll take more than just a quick session in the gym to lose weight. "Progress will be slow if you're relying solely on training for an hour, while remaining sedentary for the other 23 hours in a day," Eric said. He recommends logging 10,000 steps a day, which you can do by walking instead of driving or taking public transit, using the stairs instead of an elevator, or taking work calls on foot instead of at your desk. "This will help to increase the calories you burn throughout the day," Eric said.

Strength training is also essential. "Lifting weights helps to build muscle, lose fat, and increase your metabolic rate," Eric told POPSUGAR, and that's with as little as three sessions a week. "However, when starting out, it's important for you to seek out a professional who can oversee your form and technique, and make sure you are getting the most out of every exercise so you stay injury-free and get the best results possible."

Practice Self-Care

In this case, that means creating a soothing, device-free bedtime routine, which can help you clock the recommended seven to eight hours of sleep. "Getting enough quality sleep is important for recovery from training and maintaining a healthy hormone balance," Eric said. "When you're not sleeping enough or not sleeping well, it can result in lower energy, mental fog, fatigue, and hunger cravings, which will make your weight loss efforts harder."

Stress can cause the body to store more fat and interfere with your sleep, so find ways to unwind regularly, like taking a warm bath or practicing meditation.

If You Need a Moment of Self-Care This New Year, Try 1 of These 13 Diffusers

The latest wellness trend we can't get enough of? Diffusers. Aromatherapy has been a practice for a long time; who doesn't have certain scents they find soothing? But now, you don't have to light a candle or spray perfume. Just use an essential oil diffuser, which emits the essential oils of your choice into the air, bringing a sense of peace and calm to the space. It's really amazing how such a little device can drastically change your demeanor. There's already a lot going on in 2019, and whether you're heading into stressful work situations, need a great present for your wellness-obsessed friend, or just want to prioritize your self care, you've got to go with a diffuser.

If You Want to Load Up on Protein in the Morning, This is What You Need to Know About Oatmeal

Dietitians and fitness trainers encourage their clients to eat a balanced diet, complete with all three macros (protein, carbs, and fat). But getting enough daily protein seems to be a hot topic. As far as breakfast goes, registered dietitian Leslie Langevin, MS, RD, CD, of Whole Health Nutrition recommends getting 13 to 20 grams of protein for that first meal. If you love to dive into a bowl of oatmeal in the morning, check out how much protein that hearty bowl offers you.

As you can see from the chart below, it depends on which oats you choose. Quick oats offer the least amount of protein per serving, and also the least amount of fiber, so those get the breakfast veto. Both steel-cut oats and rolled oats offer seven grams each of protein, which definitely doesn't meet Leslie's recommendations.

Steel-cut oats Old-fashioned (rolled) oats Quick oats
Description Also called Irish or Scotch oats, these are cut, not rolled. They look like chopped-up rice, take the longest to cook, and have a slightly chewy consistency. Sometimes called rolled oats, these look like flat little ovals. When processing these oats, the kernels are steamed first, and then rolled to flatten them. They take longer to cook than quick oats but are quicker than steel-cut oats. Also called instant oats, these oats are precooked, dried, and then rolled. They cook in a few minutes when added to hot water and have a mushy texture.
Typical Serving Size 1/4 cup dry 1/2 cup dry 1/2 cup dry
Calories 170 190 150
Total Fat 3 g 3.5 g 3 g
Carbs 29 g 32 g 27 g
Fiber 5 g 5 g 4 g
Protein 7 g 7 g 5 g

In order to increase the amount of protein in your bowl, scroll through to see some ingredients you can add, such as nut butter or protein powder. They'll up the protein, but they'll also add fiber, and healthy fats, and offer a pleasing texture, making your bowl even more satisfying. Choose a few of these ingredients and you'll be on your way to the 13 to 20 grams of protein you need.

A Complete List of Foods You Should Pick Up For Success on WW

Grocery shopping while you're on WW is pretty much exactly like grocery shopping on any other diet - or just grocery shopping in general. There are no hard-and-fast rules about cutting your favorite foods out of your eating plan. It's just a matter of figuring out your SmartPoints and budgeting it all into your day properly. However, it should be pretty obvious that the more lower-in-points foods you eat, the more you can eat overall.

I put together a grocery list of my favorite staples I like to always grab when I'm shopping, and it's mostly full of 0-point foods with a few little extras here and there. (Yes, bread is included!) Keep reading to get some ideas of what you should stock up on the next time you hit the grocery store.

Halle Berry's Trainer Says This Is How Much Cardio You Should Do a Week to Lose Weight

"How much cardio do I need to lose weight," is one of the most common questions asked when it comes to working out and achieving your weight-loss goals. During Halle Berry's most recent "Fitness Friday" series on Instagram, Halle and her trainer, Peter Lee Thomas, answered questions from her followers, and this was the first question they got asked.

"I think it's good to start off with anywhere between two to three times a week with cardio," Peter said. If this sounds like too much for you to begin with, Peter suggested scaling back to one day a week and gradually working your way up to two to three days of cardio each week. "I think that's quite sufficient if you're doing it right," he added.

If you're wondering what to do during the other days of the week, Peter suggested strength training (here's a four-week beginner plan to get you started) and to do active recovery like hiking. "Start playing around with those numbers and see if it works for you. And always, always know that you can modify it and adjust based on your needs and your fitness level," he said.

If you're not sure what to do for your cardio routine, try one of the following workouts:

If You've Been Eating Eggs For the Protein, Here's What You Need to Know

Eggs are one of nature's best gifts to us: not only are they delicious, but they're also cheap, versatile, and a healthy option for breakfast and beyond. Most people turn to eggs as a good source of protein and with some sautéed veggies and maybe a side of whole-wheat toast - a hearty breakfast that will keep you satisfied until lunchtime.

And while people are becoming more comfortable with eating more fat as diets such as Whole30 and keto have grown in popularity, there is still some controversy over whether or not you should eat the yolk in an egg. Sure, egg whites have less fat and cholesterol, but alone they offer less protein and fewer essential vitamins (A, D, and folate).

But are eggs as protein-packed as we've always been told? Yes, but there's one caveat: you might want to eat more than one egg.

How Much Protein Is in an Egg?

One large egg has six grams of protein, and one jumbo egg has nearly eight grams of the macronutrient, according to the USDA food database. Compare that with egg whites, which have a little less than four grams of protein per egg white. The yolk itself has a little more than two grams of protein per yolk.

Protein is an essential macronutrient to help you lose weight and build muscle. But to make sure you get enough in a day, you have to load up at each meal. Registered dietitian and ACSM-certified personal trainer Jim White, owner of Jim White Fitness and Nutrition Studios, told POPSUGAR that people should aim for 1.2 grams of protein per kilogram of bodyweight. So if you weigh 150 pounds (68 kilograms), you should eat between 68 and 82 grams of protein a day. That comes out to a little more than 20 grams at each meal, plus some protein-packed snacks in between.

If you're relying on eggs as your main source of protein for a meal, you'll have to eat two or three whole eggs to bump up that protein content to 12 to 18 grams. If you're just eating the whites, you would have to eat even more: three to four egg whites to get 12 to 16 grams of protein. To make your breakfast even more protein-packed, try eating it with quinoa (four grams per half-cup), black beans (four grams per one-fourth cup), or cheese (two tablespoons of Parmigiano Reggiano cheese has four grams of protein).

If Your Mind Says Salad and Smoothies but Also Says Pizza and Cake, You'll Love These Memes

Eating clean is a lifestyle, and we do it because we feel our best when we load up on the veggies, fruits, whole grains, lean proteins, nuts, and seeds. When we eat tons of sugar, refined carbs, alcohol, and packaged foods made with 38 ingredients we can't pronounce, we have low energy, brain fog, and don't sleep well.

That's not to say that eating clean is 100 percent easy and awesome every second of the day. If you strive to eat clean most of the time, but every once in a while indulge in your beloved pizza and doughnuts, then these memes will speak volumes of truth to you (and make you laugh!).

Watch This Figure Skater Make History With Her Mesmerizing Routine - She's Only 13 Years Old

When we were 13, we were playing with Bratz Dolls and our Game Boy. Alysa Liu on the other hand was busy becoming the youngest US figure skating champion in history. On Jan. 25, she also became the first woman to land two triple axels in a single program at nationals. And wait, there's more! In her free skate, Alysa completed eight triple jumps, and all we can say is "Wow!"

In a post-competition interview, Alysa said, "I just wanted to beat my best score and do a clean performance, and I did." Alysa's skill, energy, and passion amazed everyone watching. Unfortunately, because of her age, Alysa is ineligible to compete at the junior world championships, and she won't be able to compete at the senior world championships until 2022.

"I'm not too worried about that part because I get more time to work on my jumps, skating skills, spins, and just trying to learn more," she said.

We can't wait see what she does in the years to come. Check out her phenomenal routine in the video above.

If You've Been Caught Off Guard by Gym Cleavage, You Need a High-Neck Tank Top

Cleavage at the gym is a real issue that we don't think is discussed enough. We're of the mind that you should wear whatever you feel comfortable in. However, sometimes, when we're in classic scoop-neck tanks, we do a double take in the mirror, then spend the rest of our workout trying to adjust ourselves so we don't show too much. Thankfully, there are plenty of high-neck options available, so that's one more gym-related worry we can cross off our list. Keep reading to shop our 12 favorite styles.

Naomi Osaka Is the Australian Open Champ, and First-Ever No. 1 Ranked Asian Player in the World

While you were sleeping, Naomi Osaka was competing to become the 2019 Australian Open Women's Singles Champion. In her second consecutive final appearance, Naomi defeated Petra Kvitova winning back-to-back grand slam titles, becoming the first-ever Japanese player to be ranked No. 1 in the world.

Last year's US Open face-off between Naomi and Serena Williams was bittersweet, but today's win in Melbourne was a completely different experience. Naomi missed three championship points in the second match, left the court frustrated, came back, and captured her second grand slam title during the third match.

This is just the beginning of Naomi's reign, and we hope she's celebrating this major victory.

Considered Trying WW? Here's Everything You Need to Know About the Program

It seems like everyone knows someone who's been on WW. Personally, I've been on several different versions of the program over the years - dating back to the time when it was still known as Weight Watchers - and I've found success with each one. What I find most refreshing about WW is that you don't necessarily feel like you're on a diet, because you can still eat whatever you want. It's just a matter of teaching yourself best practices in choosing good foods.

If you're considering trying WW for yourself but aren't entirely sure what to expect, we've put together a crash course, covering everything from what to eat to how to track your SmartPoints. Here's to finding your own success, whatever that means for you.

If Kendall Jenner Borrowed This Purse From Her Niece, Stormi Must Be Buggin'

The Kardashian-Jenners seem to be BIG fans of lots of things: gourmet salads, Calvin Klein underwear, and unique baby names, just to mention a few. But when it comes to fashion, there's one item that appeals to the whole family, age aside: Louis Vuitton mini bags. Kylie captured Stormi receiving the one Kim Kardashian bought "for all the baby girls in the fam" for Christmas, and the whole gifting process was nothing short of adorable. But in early 2018, Kourtney was carrying the same purse in a classic colorway.

Fast forward to Ben Simmons's basketball game in Philadelphia, where Kendall Jenner cheered him on courtside, flashing the exact satchel Stormi also owns. Since Kendall isn't one of the "baby girls" last time we checked, we're wondering if she simply borrowed Stormi's bag for a night out. If that's the case, we bet Stormi's waiting patiently for her little accessory to be returned. After this quarter, K Storm?

Priyanka is right on trend with these wide-leg pants. I Tried the Amazon Coat That's Taking Over the Internet

I'm a California girl living in New York City; when it comes to Winter coats, I don't mess around. Recently, I've been in the market for a new style. There are so many fun, fashion-forward silhouettes this season, but I never actually buy them, because I'm worried they won't keep me warm. So here I was, minding my own business, when I happened upon Arielle Charnas, aka Something Navy's Instagram Story. She was talking about some coat that she was wearing and loving, and casually mentioned it was from Amazon. My ears perked up, and I started doing a little more research.

The origin of the coat is slightly unclear; it apparently started with a teacher, and soon caught on to every mom on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, before trickling its way downtown to the POPSUGAR offices and my neighborhood.

Known colloquially as the "Amazon Coat" or the "Upper East Side Mom Coat," this Orolay Women's Thickened Down Jacket ($130) is a New York City staple. And when I say that, I'm not exaggerating: in the last week I've seen around 20 women wearing this coat, and I saw three women wearing it just in my commute this morning. The origin of the coat is slightly unclear; it apparently started with a teacher, and soon caught on to every mom on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, before trickling it's way downtown to the POPSUGAR offices and my neighborhood. Everyone I meet asks one question, "Is it worth buying?" and I can answer with an emphatic yes.

I understand why moms wanted to wear this coat. They want something that's got big pockets, that can withstand juice spills and doesn't feel too precious. Plus, it's got a big, thick, shearling lined hood that doesn't budge and keeps you toasty, even through particularly difficult windchill. And also, this coat is warm. Like, actually warm. I classify my coats as either a 40-degree coat or a 20-degree coat, and this is definitely a 20-degree coat. I don't know how, but it's made of real down. I've spilled matcha on it, and it slides right off. As if that wasn't enough, the coat has an oversize parka style that looks much more expensive than it is; someone asked me if it was designer, and I was proud to say that I got it on Amazon.

Someone asked me if it was designer, and I was proud to say that I got it on Amazon.

If it wasn't abundantly clear, you should buy this coat. It will get you through this season the way only a great coat can, and you'll find yourself being irrationally excited and proud of it, like I am. The coat comes in five colors, and fits pretty true to size. I go between a small and a medium, but usually buy medium coats. I took the medium in this style, and it's slightly oversize but in a good way; I'm happy I didn't go with the small. The style also features two side zippers that can make it tighter or looser.

I'll leave you with this last piece of encouragement. When I walked in to the office this morning, I started talking to some coworkers about the fact that I was writing this story. Within minutes, heads were peeking up from computers and people were asking to try it on. So basically, go pick up this coat before the entire POPSUGAR office beats you to it.

Take Your Hot Chocolate From Good to Great With These Spiked Hot Cocoa Recipes

Sweaters!), it's also the time of year where the cold makes you want to bundle up, put on a pair of cozy socks, and plop yourself on the couch. Luckily, there's another Winter staple to add to the mix: hot chocolate. Since childhood, the sweet treat is something to enjoy on a cold night or during a snow day. Now that we're all adults here, we can do what we want, and you know what that means? Boozy hot chocolate. Adding vodka, bourbon, or other liqueurs to hot cocoa elevates it to fancy cocktail level without losing its comforting traits.

PSA: Taco Bell Has New Shredded Cheeses in Flavors Like Zesty Ranch and Salsa Verde!

Ranch-flavored cheese isn't something I thought I'd ever type, but thanks to Taco Bell, it now exists. Taco Bell is adding its own flair to prepackaged shredded cheese with the launch of four new options in grocery stores: Salsa Verde, Zesty Ranch, 7-Layer Blend, and Breakfast Fiesta, all available at Meijer, according to Delish.

The Salsa Verde is shredded Monterey Jack, sharp white cheddar, sharp cheddar, and mild cheddar with salsa verde seasoning, and the Zesty Ranch has shredded Monterey Jack with ranch seasoning. The Breakfast Fiesta has a bolder flavor thanks to bacon and smoke flavor added to cheddar cheese, and the 7-Layer Blend has a mix of mild cheddar, sharp white cheddar, Monterey Jack, low-moisture mozzarella, sharp cheddar, and "queso quesadilla cheeses."

I don't know about you, but I'd put these upgraded cheeses on just about everything. Scrambled eggs, breakfast quesadillas, Mexican casseroles, pizza, mac and cheese, grilled cheese, and, of course, tacos will never be the same! See photos of each of the exciting new items ahead, and then remember to try Taco Bell's recently relaunched Nacho Fries if you haven't yet.

How Indoor Plants Can Help You Avoid Getting Sick This Flu Season

Think that the role of household plants is to just brighten up living spaces and look nice on shelves? Think again. Many common household plants, such as ferns, palms, and ZZ plants, can actually lower the infectivity of airborne viruses by raising humidity levels indoors. Yes, you heard that right. One of the secret weapons to fending off or dealing with the common cold or flu may not just be in your medicine cabinet - but also on your windowsill.

According to research, when humidity hits above 40 percent, it is able to greatly reduce the virulence and infectivity of the flu virus. Higher humidity also means lower infectivity of airborne viruses. This is where plants come in: all plants, with the exception of succulents and cacti, have the ability to increase humidity levels through a process known as transpiration.

"Transpiration occurs when direct sunlight strikes the leaves and pulls water from them into the air," explains Christopher Satch, head of plant science and education at The Sill. "The plant, in turn, pulls water from the soil to replace the water that has evaporated into the air. The bigger the plant, the more transpiration that occurs, and the more water that gets moved into the air. Humidity increases with increased transpiration and having more plants and bigger plants raises humidity the most."

So don't be afraid to splurge on plants this year - not only do they purify the air we breathe, but they can also keep us healthy. Read ahead for 15 humidity-generating plants, and where to buy them, that can help us to feel our best.

Why This Controversial Organizing Method Is Exactly What You Need

Letting go of clutter is hard to do. Anyone who has encountered the teachings of Japanese cleaning guru Marie Kondo knows that minimalism is currently all the rage; her housekeeping manual, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up, has inspired legions of readers to throw away their unneeded belongings. And now her Netflix series, Tidying Up, is ushering in a new wave of devotees. We love all things related to organization and have to admit to clearing out our drawers and closets in a fit of aspirational tidying ourselves.

Not everyone, though, is on board with KonMari, the nickname Kondo gave her techniques. As with any good trend, there's a corresponding backlash. A writer for The New York Times extolled the virtues of living a life surrounded by things in an article called "Let's Celebrate the Art of Clutter." Plus, her stance on ridding your home of books that don't "spark joy" has had book-lovers up in arms.

Whether you're pro- or anticlutter, you must admit there's a certain calmness to be found in a well-organized drawer. Read through to see aspirational examples of Marie's method at work, and see if you aren't a little inspired to take a turn at organizing your own home.

Upset About the Conversation Hearts Shortage This Year? Krispy Kreme Has a Sweet Solution

It was recently revealed that Sweethearts Conversation Hearts will not be available this coming Valentine's Day following a behind-the-scenes business change that disrupted the usual manufacturing process. While we've pondered canceling Valentine's Day altogether, Krispy Kreme is offering a solution: conversation doughnuts.

Available from Jan. 30 through Feb. 14, the cheeky doughnuts will feature updated romantic phrases like "All the feels," "DM me," and so on. As far as the taste is concerned, the heart-shaped doughnuts will be filled with one of four flavors: cake batter, raspberry, strawberries and cream, and chocolate cream.

"Finding the right word can be like, I don't know . . . hard. But eating a doughnut is easy," Chief Marketing Officer Dave Skena said in a press release. "So, we printed the right words on the doughnuts for you so you can't mess this up." Krispy Kreme is also sweetening this deal with a free conversation heart doughnut with any purchase for rewards members on Feb. 6. While we're still slightly bummed by the conversation hearts news, this alternative will surely do.

Mom Learns Her 2 Adopted Kids Are Actually Biological Siblings

When Colorado mom Katie Page adopted son Grayson in May 2017, she had no idea that her life was going to get that much richer. A month later, she received a call that a sweet baby, Hannah, needed a foster mom. Katie took in Hannah, and after showering the two children with love, she started to notice some similarities that she just couldn't ignore.

"Everybody thought I was crazy."

While she and the adoption agency both believed the children came from different mothers - they were placed by women with different last names - she trusted her mother's instinct. Something told her that Grayson and Hannah were related. "They both have a chin dimple, and the other feature is one that only a mama would see because it's covered by their diaper!" Page shared with PEOPLE.

"Everybody thought I was crazy," she continued. "I think everyone thought it was a far stretch because I didn't have that much to go on, but my intuition was telling me there was more to the story. We kept it pretty quiet until there was more information to support the theory."

Page didn't give up and eventually learned through a DNA test that Hannah and Grayson did, in fact, have the same mother. With that news, she was able to officially adopt Hannah.

"Because they were related, she was able to stay in my home - judges rule that way," Page said. "They were meant to find each other, that's pretty clear. I think God intended that from the beginning. If they weren't related, Hannah would not have stayed with our family. She would have been placed with other relatives. It was a great thing."

Just a year apart, the siblings are closer than ever. "They are two peas in a pod," Page finished. A pod that, through Page's tenacity, only she made possible.

Marie Kondo sparked the organization bug inside of us all with her KonMari Method, and let's be honest, we couldn't be more grateful, because getting organized is one of the best feelings in the world. One of the toughest spots to get ultraorganized is the kitchen, but don't worry, these food storage containers are about to change all of that.

Ever since Netflix's Tidying Up With Marie Kondo was released in January, there has been a flurry of interested families curious as to whether or not they have what it takes to follow her rules of decluttering. If You Buy 1 Thing For Valentine's Day, Let It Be This Sweater That Traps Your Partner Next to You

I don't typically buy clothing that's specific to Valentine's Day - though I have seen a few shirts that have definitely piqued my interest - but this is the year I put that tradition (or lack thereof) to an end. Zulily has a number of two-person sweaters for Feb. 14, and after trying one on with a coworker, I'm totally sold. You can wear them with a partner, BFF, sister, or even someone in your office. Not only does it make for the best picture imaginable, but it's impossible not to spread cheer when you wear it. For that, I'll certainly take one!

Amazon Is Selling a Heated Sleeping Bag For Your Feet, and BRB While We Plug It in Under Our Desks

I've lived and worked in three major cities - Los Angeles, Manhattan, and San Francisco - and while the Winters across these three cities differ drastically (you can pretty much survive an LA Winter in a denim jacket), "office weather" is sort of the same. It's either piping hot because the heaters are blasting full force and tenants don't have control of them, or, for whatever reason, it's downright freezing and all of your coworkers are bundled up underneath cozy blankets. For those working in the latter camp, I just found the perfect solution.

Far better than a little space heater is this Heating Pad, Electric Heated Foot Warmer ($42). Simply slip off your shoes (you know you do that anyway), plug this in, and slip your feet inside this magical private mat. It warms up in seconds, has three heating levels, and comes with an auto shut-off feature that kicks in after two hours, so you never have to worry about whether you accidentally left it plugged in after you've left for the day.

No, My Nonparent Friends Don't Secretly Hate Coming to My Kids' Parties

"When will Aunt Kaylie and Uncle Fred be here?"

My kids are waiting/dancing less and less patiently by the front door, their faces alternately pressed against the window, peering outside, looking for two of their favorite grown-ups to show up for the party we're throwing for our little one's birthday. Kaylie and Fred aren't really our relatives, but they may as well be, since they've been in our lives for more than 20 years. Kaylie and I went to college together, but she, Fred, and my husband go back all the way to high school. We have a long history, complete with enough inside jokes to annoy anyone on the "outside." We drank extremely cheap beer together when we were 18, moved to New York City together when we graduated, were in one another's weddings, and even give each other credit for the other couple getting together in the first place. Then, my husband and I had kids.

I can say without a doubt that my friends love my kids and want to be in their lives.

Now we have four, and Kaylie and Fred are still in our lives as much as they ever were, even though they haven't started a family yet. I invite them to all of our children's parties, and no, I don't think they secretly hate it. Yes, they go to the toy store to buy a gift and hang out with a bunch of screaming kindergartners, but they love our family, and we love including them, even if our lives are completely different.

As if to prove that point, on this particular day, Aunt Kaylie and Uncle Fred show up looking a little, well, um, hungover. I shake my head when I open the door, remembering when, like, a million years ago, I had the stamina to stay up past midnight (OK, 9 p.m.) and drink more than two glasses of wine without passing out on the sofa in between a plastic firetruck and a mermaid Barbie. When I ask what they're doing after the kiddie party, they share that they're going out to a nice dinner in the city at a place that's so new and cool, I haven't even heard of it. I know I'll be munching on leftover pizza and birthday cake after bath and bedtime, but guess what? It's all good! Right now, my amazing, much-freer friends are here and already getting down on the floor to make bead necklaces with my daughters. Uncle Fred is the first one in the pool soon after that and starts a cannonball contest. Kaylie reveals she just had to get each of the kids something while she was shopping and pulls four gift bags out of a much bigger bag, to the massive delight of my brood.

Clearly, my friends love being around my little ones. They are also genuinely happy for me and my husband that we have a great family we enjoy celebrating. I can say without a doubt that my friends love my kids and want to be in their lives. It's clear from how excited the kids get to see Kaylie and Fred that they've developed their own relationships. So how could their honorary aunt and uncle not be invited to a party for one of their "nieces" or "nephews"?

Sure, some people may find it strange that nonparents would be included in a child's party, but for us, it doesn't matter. We all just fit together, even if they got time to shower in the past 48 hours and I didn't. When it comes to the important stuff in life, we're on the same page. We've been there for one another through loss, job changes, promotions, moves, health scares, and countless other life-changing events. No matter where life takes us from here, whether it's Chuck E. Cheese's or, fingers crossed, an adults-only vacation one day, I hope our comparatively well-rested, non-spit-up-stained friends are right by our sides.

Angelina Jolie Is Executive Producing a Children's TV Series With a Very Important Message

Only Angelina Jolie would get her hands on a production deal for a children's show but make it about current affairs. She has done vital humanitarian work for years, and as a mom, providing valuable information to young people is important to her. The actress is collaborating with BBC Learning and Microsoft Education on a global English-language television program for an adolescent audience. Angelina is the executive producer, and the show's purpose is to "help children have access to impartial information of the highest editorial standard and bring a deeper understanding of the different issues their peers face in other parts of the world," according to a press release.

"The initiative will help give students ages 7-14 the knowledge, tools, and critical thinking skills required to understand, evaluate, and contextualize news, and also encourage them to be effective citizen journalists who can accurately report on the world around them," the statement continued. While the initial launch will be in English, the team plans to expand the show to multiple languages.

Angelina added, "All of us who have come together on this project feel a great responsibility towards young people. We want to make sure that we are able to put forward a news program that helps to give them a broad view of the world they live in and the issues they face, and that helps connect them to other children around the world." The series is still untitled, but it will be a weekly 30-minute program with 10 episodes to start. Sounds like we could all learn a thing or two from this educational project.

Every Parent's Gotta Suck Some Snot at Some Point in Their Lives - This $16 Nasal Aspirator Will Save You

Nothing can really prepare you for your child's first cold. You do the best you can as a new parent and keep sick family members at bay, but there's only so much avoiding you can do. At some point your baby will be exposed to germs that will bring about their first cold.

This can be frightening for parents. Your child can't communicate how they're feeling. If they're congested, sleep becomes an issue too - babies typically don't learn to breathe through their mouths until at least a few months old. You'll need to clear out their nasal passageways, which is why you'll want the NoseFrida the Snotsucker by Fridababy ($16). Read on to see how it works.

I Have 3 Daughters, and I'm So Over Selling Girl Scout Cookies

I have three daughters. They've all done Girl Scouts at some point over the past several years. And that means each Winter, we're tasked with selling cookies . . . lots of them. And I dread it. Like, really dread it. Because with everything I already have going on as a mother of four (I also have one son), I now have to worry about harassing my friends and family near and far to buy boxes of Thin Mints. I'm over Girl Scout cookies, and I honestly don't want to so much as send one email or ring one doorbell with my girls this year.

Suddenly, I'm also responsible for the forms, which look like payroll spreadsheets, and you have to go online and register your girl to sell cookies to out-of-town family and friends.

I remember selling Girl Scout cookies back when I was a kid, and I never thought about the burden it placed on my mom. All I cared about was having decent sales. But now that I'm the mom, I get it. I'm trying to get through each day remembering field trip money for school and making sure all of my children are prepared with clean clothes and completed homework, as well as lunches, water bottles, and snacks. I'm driving them to swim practice, gymnastics, and Girl Scout meetings. Meetings require major prep before you ever add cookies into the equation; there are badges to iron on and there's snack duty to sign up for . . . and then remembering the right date to bring the snack, how many girls are in the troop, who is gluten-free, and who is allergic to peanuts. It goes on and on and on. I'm lucky to get my girls to their meetings on time and in a clean uniform. When that happens, I feel like a freakin' superhero.

But then cookie-selling season comes around. Suddenly, I'm also responsible for the forms, which look like payroll spreadsheets, and you have to go online and register your girl to sell cookies to out-of-town family and friends. There are custom-generated emails you can send; it's high-tech now! You would think that would make selling Samoas easier, but I feel like it only adds to the pressure to sell, sell, sell. Last year, our Girl Scout leader sent out updates of how many cookies each girl had sold, which made me start to worry that my kids weren't living up.

Besides the insane demand to tally up the number of boxes of cookies your kids sell, I honestly hate the element of having to ask people in our lives to spend money on my kids. It's one thing for Grandma and Grandpa to buy a box or two, but that's not enough anymore. When little Sally from the troop is selling 142 boxes, I'm suddenly looking through the contact list on my phone to see who we can put the heat on next. And then there are the booth sales, which take place outside local businesses. Last year, my girls were asked to sit outside in the freezing cold for hours to "torment" every patron who came in or out of a convenience store with a plea to buy some cookies. I wasn't loving that experience for even a minute, let alone for the entire day.

Listen, I think the Girls Scouts is an amazing organization, and my daughters have definitely benefited from membership. They learn about self-respect and respect for others, and they have taken part in some awesome community service projects. I'll take those character-building lessons and activities any day of the week. And yes, I know that selling cookies helps fund those exercises, but can we maybe take some of the pressure off? Both the kids and the parents? It just seems to have turned into one big competition, and I'm so tired. And I know I'm not the only one.

In fact, my youngest daughter's troop leader is allowing parents to donate money in lieu of selling cookies if they just don't want to deal with storing dozens of boxes of Do-si-dos in their basement until they find 18 extra hours in their day to deliver orders to everyone they've ever known. I'm so writing that check!

Here's hoping the Girl Scouts organization identifies other fundraising activities for members. How about a walk-a-thon? Or a family day? Something positive and healthy that affords families time together. Am I the only adult who doesn't think Girl Scout cookies are the best thing ever (I definitely wouldn't miss Tagalongs or Trefoils)? OK, I might be alone in that opinion.

Organizing Your Life by Color Is Actually Really Practical, and Your Whole Family Will Love It

After spending about a half hour scrolling through The Home Edit's feed on Instagram to write an article about its organization solutions for kids' rooms, I had looked through so many photos of belongings in rainbow order, I went home and reorganized every single app on my Apple TV home screen according to ROYGBIV. Then I did my phone apps, even though my thumbs were screaming at me not to due to the muscle memory they've built over time. The feeling I had looking at both screens afterward was, not to be dramatic, one of euphoria.

Which is what I told The Home Edit's Clea and Joanna when I spoke to them on the phone the next day. The pair teamed up with Amazon Alexa to chat to POPSUGAR about staying organized in the new year, and while all of their tips for organizing are amazing (seriously, one look at their Instagram and you'll fall in love), I couldn't help but be fixated on the whole rainbow philosophy.

"It's really useful!" Clea said to me when I told her about organizing my phone apps. "It's a big conversation starter." She's not wrong - one look at my phone and my boyfriend asked with a hint of judgment, "Is your phone . . . rainbow now?" So I wondered, what's their solution when someone is anti rainbow organization?

"In a playroom, it's extremely helpful. It's very intuitive for kids."

"There are definitely people - either for aesthetic purposes or because they just can't wrap their head around it - who are not rainbow candidates, and that is totally fine. We do not push our rainbow ways onto people!" Clea said. "There are a lot of people whose aesthetic is natural woods, or a black and white situation."

Although they don't force their love of rainbow on their clients every time, they are passionate about color order in specific parts of the home. "In a playroom, it's extremely helpful," Clea said. "It's very intuitive for kids, so for children and their rooms specifically, it is a really smart way for them to learn where things go and where to find what they're looking for."
