We Are Blessed: For the Fifth Year in a Row, Lady Gaga Will Perform at the Grammys
Here's some exciting news to "fill that void" - Lady Gaga will perform at the Grammys this year and will likely sing "Shallow." Are we blessed, or what?
On Tuesday, the Recording Academy announced that the Oscar-nominated A Star Is Born actress will take the stage at the organization's 61st annual ceremony on Sunday, which marks her fifth performance in a row. Since 2015, Gaga - who is up for five Grammys this year - has hit the stage for everything from a colorful, moving David Bowie tribute, to a collaboration with Metallica that convinced everyone she needed to put out a hard rock album.
Although the Academy has yet to confirm that "Shallow" will be the song Gaga does indeed perform, it seems like there's a pretty strong chance. The song is nominated for record of the year, song of the year, best song written for visual media, and best pop duo performance. While Gaga is also nominated for best pop performance for "Joanne (Where Do You Think You're Goin'?)," she performed that song at last year's show, so it seems highly unlikely she'd sing it again. Here's hoping she brings Bradley Cooper out to sing with her.
In addition to Gaga, performers include: Travis Scott, Chloe x Halle, Fantasia, Andra Day, Dua Lipa, St. Vincent, Cardi B, Camila Cabello, Post Malone, Kacey Musgraves, Janelle Monáe, and Dan + Shay. Diana Ross is also on the roster for a special "Diamond Diana" birthday performance, while Katy Perry and Maren Morris will join Little Big Town for a Dolly Parton tribute.
These NSFW Celebrity Snaps Are So Hot, a Fire Extinguisher Couldn't Put Them Out
With all the bikini and shirtless moments we've already been blessed with this year, it's clear that celebrities know a thing or two about being sexy. Still, nothing quite gets our hearts beating like an NSFW snap, and we've already been treated to a handful of those. From Nicki Minaj, to Cardi B, to Halle Berry, check out the steamiest celebrity snaps of 2019 - so far!
The Perfectionists: Alison and Mona Return in the PLL Spinoff's Chilling First Trailer
It's been quite some time since we left the little town of Rosewood for good, but now, the legacy of Pretty Little Liars will live on. Last year, Freeform announced a new series that would be connected to the Pretty Little Liars universe: The Perfectionists. With the premiere inching ever closer, we now have our first look at the chilling new series, which takes us to a quaint community in the Pacific Northwest (Beacon Heights) that is rocked by an unthinkable act: murder.
"Everything about the town of Beacon Heights seems perfect, from their top-tier college to their overachieving residents," the synopsis reads. "The stress of needing to be perfect leads to the town's first murder. Behind every Perfectionist is a secret, a lie and a needed alibi." Do you have goosebumps? We sure do. Luckily, we don't have to wait too long to see the next chapter in the lives of Mona Vanderwaal and Alison DiLaurentis; Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists will premiere on Freeform on March 20.
All the TV Shows That Have Been Canceled (or Are Coming to an End) in 2019
After a stellar year full of exceptional TV shows, we almost forgot that we might have to say goodbye to a few of them in 2019. Alas, even though it's only February, a few networks have already given some of their shows the boot. While we've known for quite some time that certain beloved series would be wrapping up this year - The Big Bang Theory, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend - other announcements have caught us by surprise. Take a look at all dramas, comedies, and everything in between that will take its last on-air gasp in 2019, ahead.
This Simple Storage Hack Keeps Salad Greens Fresh For at Least a Week, and It's About Time
Like many of us, I like to eat salads for lunch, especially on the weekdays. They're super easy to make ahead and, of course, really good for you. Usually I'll cook a meat or fish prior to the start of the week so I can throw the ingredients together quickly on busy mornings. But I've found that keeping the greens crisp and fresh all week can be difficult, destroying my plan altogether. There's nothing worse than opening the fridge only to find that your lettuce has turned slimy or become mush.
After experimenting for several years, I think I've finally found a foolproof way to keep greens fresher longer. Once I've cut up the greens and combined them (I love nutrient-rich spinach mixed with crunchy romaine), I use a supersimple storage method to keep them crisp.
Instead of keeping greens in their original packaging or placing them in a plastic bag, I use a storage container - usually a fairly large one, as buying in bulk helps me save money, too. Then I line the bottom of the container with two layers of paper towels, add the mixed greens, and place another double layer of paper towels on top of the lettuce before sealing the lid and gliding it into the fridge. Voilà. That's it.
I have found that storing my salad greens this way keeps them fresh for at least a whole week, because the box gives them more room to breathe and the paper towels help suck up all the additional moisture from the leaves. This process has eliminated my midweek grocery trips - something I used to loathe. So, if you're looking for a way to avoid slimy, mushy salad greens, you should really try this!
The Sun Is Also a Star Trailer: Yara Shahidi and Charles Melton Fall in Love Against All Odds
Could you fall in love over the course of a single day? Upon first glance, that's the premise of The Sun Is Also a Star, in which college-bound hopeless romantic Daniel (Riverdale's Charles Melton) attempts to convince matter-of-fact Natasha (Grown-ish's Yara Shahidi) that he can make her fall head over heels for him in just 24 magical hours. But there's a catch, just as there's far more to this YA adaptation of Nicola Yoon's novel than initially meets the eye.
Natasha has been fiercely fighting against her family's sudden deportation back to Jamaica, so a future with Daniel seems not only unlikely, but flat out impossible. Despite their unfortunate situation, the star-crossed pair can't help but deny the sparks flying between them on what might be Natasha's last day in America. Regardless of if they figure out a way to stay together or not, we can already tell this movie is going to make us weep. (Buckets.) Watch the first trailer above, before it arrives in theaters on May 17.
Can You Guess Which Random John Mayer Song Is Being Turned Into a TV Show by ABC?
If a TV network asked you to base a new series on one of John Mayer's songs, which would you pick?
Maybe "Your Body Is a Wonderland" could be turned into a rom-com? "Say" could be about a young progressive politician navigating her new role in DC? (Wink, wink.) Even "Daughters" seems rife with familial drama. But in what might be today's most unexpected piece of entertainment news, ABC has decided to base a new series on a track off Mayer's Continuum: "The Heart of Life."
The song from the Grammy winner's third studio album (while catchy, in my very humble opinion) was never even released as a single, and Mayer didn't bother to make a music video for it. Still, the network has clearly been inspired by its emotional lyrics - "Pain throws your heart to the ground / Love turns the whole thing around / Fear is a friend who's misunderstood" - and has already ordered a pilot based on the song, which will reportedly follow two siblings. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the rough plot is as follows:
"Heart of Life follows two sets of adult siblings from wildly different worlds who discover they are related and must reassess everything they thought they knew about their shared father. As they explore the mystery of their separate childhoods, they'll experience the difficulty in overcoming the sins of the past, and learn the joys of reuniting with long-lost family."
What's interesting is that the lyrics themselves don't really seem to tell a concrete story. Rather, they're a more general reflection on resilience during difficult times and the ties that bond us. Fortunately, there's a good team behind the show: Ben Queen (NBC's Powerless) will write the script and executive-produce with Mayer, Melvin Mar (Jumanji), Jake Kasdan (Bless This Mess), and Paul Weitz (Mozart in the Jungle).
Until we find out more about the show's specifics (like who will play those siblings, for instance), feel free to pick apart the lyrics to "Heart of Life" below.
I hate to see you cry
Laying there in that position
There's things you need to hear
So turn off your tears and listen
Pain throws your heart to the ground
Love turns the whole thing around
No, it won't all go the way it should
But I know the heart of life is good
You know it's nothing new
Bad news never had good timing
But then the circle of your friends
Will defend the silver lining
Pain throws your heart to the ground
Love turns the whole thing around
No, it won't all go the way it should
But I know the heart of life is good
Pain throws your heart to the ground
Love turns the whole thing around
Fear is a friend who's misunderstood
But I know the heart of life is good
I know it's good.
Gather Your Girls! Here Are the Best Girlfriend Getaways For 2019
"You're the loves of her life. And a guy's just lucky to come in fourth."
Mr. Big may have uttered this iconic line 15 years ago on Sex and the City, but the importance of female friendship still rings just as true in 2019. While we're making space for self-care and prioritizing what really matters, there's nothing like uninterrupted quality girlfriend time. Why should bachelorette parties be the only excuse to escape on vacation with your tribe? Making memories over once-in-a-lifetime experiences is just as important as the all-important Sunday brunch therapy sessions. Whether your crew prefers to get a little wild in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, or relax and unwind in Bali, we've selected the amazing getaways for 2019 that every girl in your crew will love!
Priyanka Chopra's Sexy Plunging Pantsuit Is Enough to Make You Turn the Thermostat Down
Priyanka Chopra had us all swooning during her appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and not just because she shared more sweet details about her marriage to Nick Jonas. The Isn't It Romantic star turned up the heat in a sexy embellished two-piece by Teresa Helbig consisting of a plunging white collarless blazer and matching slim pants, both studded all over with silver motifs. She finished the look with white pumps and Lorraine Schwartz jewels (including some stunning emeralds).
It's fitting that the newlywed is sporting a lot of white at the moment. Given how many wedding celebrations she and Nick had, it's clear that they're planning to live in this moment for as long as possible, and every new outing in the hue gives us flashbacks to that incredible white wedding ensemble. Take a look at Priyanka's latest moment in white ahead, then shop your own white blazer so you can copy this look in a slightly more wearable way.

The Weird Role K-Y Jelly and Latex Played in Transforming Christian Bale Into Dick Cheney
Nasal plugs, surgical tape, K-Y Jelly, yellowing dental veneers - the key items scattered on set of the Academy Award-nominated film Vice sound more like what you'd find in a nursing home medicine cabinet than beauty products. And yet, these are just a few of many things the movie's makeup team used to transform a star-studded cast with the conventionally "good" looks Hollywood tends to favor into rising politicians.
More specifically, Christian Bale looked nearly unrecognizable as former VP Dick Cheney, as did Amy Adams as his public image-minded wife Lynne, Sam Rockwell as George W. Bush, and Steve Carell as Donald Rumsfeld. "We needed to create over 75 'likeness' makeups of iconic characters across five decades within a 50-day shooting schedule - these products were indispensable," hair and makeup department lead Kate Biscoe told POPSUGAR.
"Throughout each decade, it was evident that Washington DC was dominated by very clean-cut men. No one stood out and you certainly didn't get ahead in DC by looking like an individual."
Creating that semblance of real people became a balancing act of fact versus fiction. "Throughout each decade, it was evident that Washington DC was dominated by very clean-cut men," she said. "No one stood out and you certainly didn't get ahead in DC by looking like an individual. I really wanted to juxtapose that 'cookie-cutter-ness' and the results of war in other parts of the world. So as clean and safe the DC look was, we went equally as dirty, sweaty, and bloody for all of the war scenes." Greg Cannom, the award-winning makeup designer behind Bale's transformation, added: "You can't get it exactly right, so at some point you just have to stop looking at the pictures and use your imagination to pull it off."
And pull it off, they did: the team's work in Vice was just nominated for an Oscar in the Best Achievement in Makeup and Hairstyling category. Ahead, they're spilling all the behind-the-scenes beauty secrets, which - like most things kept behind closed doors in politics - are pretty damn juicy.
Lea Michele Covered "Shallow" With Darren Criss, and Yes, She Nails THAT Note
Do you ever go on an obsessive deep-dive of a TV show or movie you love, only to uncover hidden gems you never realized existed in the first place? That's how I stumbled across Lea Michele's A Star Is Born cover with Darren Criss.
The former Glee costars went on tour together last year, and like many of us, became quickly obsessed with a certain Oscar-nominated song. They decided to cover Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper's "Shallow" duet at their San Francisco concert in October 2018, and wow, did they give a powerful performance. As award season rages on, it seems appropriate to revisit this performance and revel in *that* high note. You know the one.
Watch Michele and Criss's full cover above. Maybe they can give Cooper some tips to help him keep calm while singing at the Oscars - it sounds like he's pretty nervous.

Small Bust? Shop 20 Figure-Flattering Suits to Enhance What You've Got
Swimsuit shopping is a unique battle for anyone, especially if you're self-conscious about being smaller up top. So this season, arm yourself with tricks and you'll be able to stroll seaside with confidence.
- Flaunt what you have, and fake what you don't. If you're looking to create more cleavage, opt for an underwire bra top (or padding). A structured top will shape what you have, while padded cups can actively fake more if that's the look you're after.
- Distract, distract, distract. Ruffles, bold prints, and splashes of color are all far busier than a simple, solid suit and can claim an onlooker's attention.
- Embrace what you can wear. Tiny tops and unique shapes are cute but often spell disaster for women with larger chests. Trendy styles are easy to conquer when support isn't mandatory, so go ahead and play around with fun cuts.
Now that you're up to speed, just read on to shop the cutest suits for small-busted beach babes.

Watch the Intense Trailer For HBO’s Documentary Series About Serial's Adnan Syed
Source: Courtesy of Serial Podcast
A docuseries about Adnan Syed, whose story rose to fame through the Serial podcast, is coming to HBO. The Case Against Adnan Syed is directed by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Amy Berg and will trace "how the rush to justice and Syed's conviction in 2000 raised more questions than answers about what happened to Hae Min Lee, underscoring the instability of memory and conflicting eyewitnesses," Entertainment Weekly first reported.
The Serial podcast rose to popularity beginning in 2015 by reexamining Syed's Baltimore murder case, which was closed. He was convicted of murdering his ex-girlfriend, Hae Min Lee, and sentenced to life in prison in 2000. The four-hour-long documentary series will feature interviews with Syed, his family, friends of Syed and Lee, and members of the Baltimore law enforcement. Musicians Nick Cave and Warren Ellis will produce the score. Watch the newly released trailer above.
According to Vanity Fair, the series will be released this Spring. Currently, Syed is still in prison and maintains his innocence.

Kylie Jenner Flashes a HUGE Diamond Ring on Her Left Hand - Are She and Travis Scott Engaged?
Despite speculation that Travis Scott would be proposing to Kylie Jenner at the Super Bowl, it looks like it was just a rumor - or was it? Even though the 26-year-old rapper didn't make the grand gesture of proposing to the 21-year-old reality TV star during his halftime performance, Kylie was spotted wearing a giant diamond ring on that finger. On Sunday, Travis posted a photo of Kylie smiling and flashing the sparkly bauble on his Instagram Stories, and Kylie also flaunted the ring on her own Instagram account. Hmm . . . so does this mean Travis and Kylie are engaged?
Well, before you jump to any conclusions, it's worth noting that Kylie has teased us like this before. Back in January, she posted a series of snaps wearing a diamond ring on her left hand. Not to mention, she also recently referred to Travis as her husband. An engagement wouldn't be surprising, though, given that the couple have been together for almost two years now and are already parents to 1-year-old daughter Stormi. So, what's the truth, Kylie?

There's a Period Emoji Coming, So I Guess That's a Step in the Right Direction
It's announced! We're super excited to let you know that we're finally getting a #PeriodEmoji!
It is coming to keyboards from March 2019🎉
Find out more here▶https://t.co/dKd4WwEShX pic.twitter.com/vz2FrJw3Gk- PlanInternational UK (@PlanUK) February 6, 2019
All of the emoji you normally use to indicate that you're on your cycle can go back to their original uses now, because thanks to a campaign led by Plan International UK, we're finally getting the period emoji that we all bloody deserve (sorry). Plan International UK is a girls' rights organization that's spent the last few years attempting to get the emoji added to keyboards as a way to destigmatize periods, and make it an easier topic for women to talk to their peers about.
"The fact so many women in this country still find it difficult to talk to work colleagues, friends, and family about their period shows that it remains a taboo subject and something women feel ashamed to discuss," Girls' Rights Campaign Manager Lucy Russell said when the push began in 2017. "We know that these taboos can have a damaging impact on the lives of girls around the world. Many missing school because they face bullying or unfair treatment, or experiencing infections due to a lack of menstrual hygiene education and products."
Russell continued, "Women have told us that by having an emoji, it will make it easier for them to talk about periods with others and so that's why we're addressing the need and creating something that everyone can use. Hopefully this will go some way towards breaking down the stigma surrounding periods once and for all." Unicode officially confirmed in February that the character, a red drop of blood, will be released with the newest batch of emoji coming soon.

Men, grab a notepad and listen up, because comedian Trey Kennedy is here to teach you everything you need to know about being the picture-perfect millennial boyfriend - with a hilarious twist, of course. In one of his recent weekly videos, the YouTube personality breaks down some "lessons" about the key to a young gal's heart, and the whole thing is just so painfully accurate, I'm honestly wondering if Trey was a millennial woman in a past life.
Before explaining the ideal formula for a mushy goodnight text message, he lays out all the foods a boyfriend should provide his lady to keep her happy, narrowing it down to the acronym "SPIRIT," which stands for sushi, pizza, ice cream, Rosé, iced coffee, and tacos. I mean, he's not wrong. Check out a few other standout teachings below, then join the more than six million people who have viewed Trey's viral video by watching it above.
- "Who in here thinks you should be the only man in her life? Wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong. There's gonna be two other men in her life: one's named Ben, one's named Jerry."
- "When she's in a dark place, dark chocolate in her face."
- "If you go on vacations with your girl, you're no longer her boyfriend - you're a photographer. You're a Boomerang specialist. You're a frickin' paparazzi."
- "Any Bachelor fans in the house? All of your hands should be raised. You will be. And if she asks if any of the girls on the show are pretty, remember this: 'Play dumb, save your bum.'"

On Being Called "Brown Sugar" and "Oprah" in Morocco
It's a truth universally acknowledged that when you complain to an ignorant man about being catcalled, they'll say you should take it as a compliment. And when you further explain that being catcalled abroad is even worse, they'll mansplain to you that it's just the way the culture is and you should just suck it up and expect it if you're going to travel.
I don't recall being whistled at or spoken to like a sexual object much in my youth. I wasn't exactly the ideal standard of beauty in my small town, so it wasn't until I moved away to bigger cities that I realized that this unfortunate act of catcalling was something that could happen to me. And sadly, as I've gotten older and lived in cities such as Los Angeles, London, and New York, it's only gotten worse. I'll never enjoy being on the receiving end of it and certainly do not consider it flattering.
My adventurous nature took me on a trip to Morocco after finding extremely inexpensive flights. It was a country I had heard so much about and just had to figure out if all the hype was justified. Thankfully, I was overjoyed to find out that it exceeded my expectations. Morocco is an intense blend of old and new. The vibrant colors, smells of spices, and old ruins were fulfilling my Indiana Jones fantasies.
In my research, before I arrived, it was made clear that the men of Morocco tended more toward the aggressive side when it came to interactions with women. I had faced many sexual remarks toward me in my travels to other locations but didn't want to go in with a bad attitude about this and have it ruin the trip. From the moment I landed in the North African country, a barrage of physical remarks rained down upon me. My inner angry feminist was enraged.
It's a complicated feeling to want to change the world and how women are treated, but then to try and respect the culture of a country and not go in with a stubborn mind on how things are done. I wanted so badly to stand up for myself, but I also didn't want to cause a scene. I just let it be because I wanted to enjoy my time there, even if it meant feeling tremendously uncomfortable.
I do have to give it to Moroccan catcallers, though, for their creativity. When I'm walking around New York City, I just get a honk and suggestive look from a car as it passes by, or told that I should be smiling by a stranger who thinks he should get to dictate what my face looks like for him. Or I might be trying to innocently enjoy a museum when a security guard comes up to me and whispers right up in my ear in a creepy voice that he thinks I'm pretty. At least in Morocco, I received the borderline sexual harassment compliments with a bit of flair.
Morocco is insanely gorgeous and I don't want to miss out on seeing more of it just because some random guy called me Brown Sugar.
As a curvy black woman, some of my favorite names I've been called in Morocco are Beyoncé, Brown Sugar, Oprah, Bob Marley, and Whoopi Goldberg. I guess in a way I certainly do feel flattered. Beyoncé, Oprah, and Whoopi's careers are literally my life goals, so being compared to them could be considered a bit nice. Brown Sugar feels a little obvious, but at least it's sweet. And traveling with long, thick braids, I guess I was just asking for the Bob Marley comparisons.
I realize that a lot of it has to do with being a marketing tactic to make people pay attention to them and possibly come over to buy their products. The culture is that of hustling as hard as possible to make enough money to support themselves or their families, so I understand that it's all about how to gain new customers. And I'm sure I didn't notice if they were also saying things to men as well since I was in my own head a lot with each new name they called me.
Despite being treated this way, I went back to Morocco a year later and still have plans to go again in the near future. The thing is, it definitely may suck for a woman to have to endure these sexist moments while seeing the world, but the fact of the matter is that Morocco is insanely gorgeous and I don't want to miss out on seeing more of it just because some random guy called me Brown Sugar.
Morocco is still one of my favorite countries I've been to, and the first location I mention when people ask me for suggestions of places to go. The culture may not be the most attractive thing for a Westernized feminist to have to digest, but it's good to get outside of your comfort zone and face those that haven't been brought fully up to speed on how many women don't like to be spoken to. My inner Oprah gives me the serenity to face anything, including being called Oprah by someone who needs to back away five steps and not touch me, please.

We'll soon have a waffle, butter, falafel, a mate drink, onion, and garlic. Hate to break it to you, white wine enthusiasts, but there's still not a specific glass for you.
There are 59 approved emoji but technically a lot more when you consider the number of gender and skin-tone options. As the Emojipedia blog post explains, "Emoji 12.0 is comprised of 59 distinct new emojis; 75 when gender variations are taken into account; and 230 new emojis when all skin tone options are also included." It's only been a few months since the Apple iOS 12.1 update brought us new emoji like the llama and the bagel, but there's always more up emoji creators' sleeves.
For this newest release, which has no specific timeline yet, Apple partnered with the nonprofit organization Unicode Consortium after proposing more representative emoji in a letter last Fall. Get excited as you catch a glimpse of all the new emoji ahead.
What It Feels Like to Travel While Black
I woke up at 6 a.m. in a tiny hotel room in Tokyo, checked my phone, and found an email from our hostel in Kyoto: "You missed your check-in date." In a half-awake frantic moment, I rummaged through my bag to find the itinerary I had printed out before we left New York. We were supposed to have left Tokyo the day before to head to Kyoto. It slowly hit me that we had accidentally overstayed our reservation at this accommodation and no one at the front desk had said a thing. I woke up my boyfriend, screamed at him to pack up as quickly as possible, and we ran out of there like criminals in the early morning light.
The jet lag had overcome me since our arrival, and I had gotten my days mixed up, which was the most innocent of blunders. However, the main feeling overflowing me in that moment wasn't shame over this simple mistake, but instead, "Oh God, they're going to think I'm a horrible, stealing, gross, American black woman with no respect for their hotel." My white boyfriend couldn't fathom why I was so upset over this mishap. But as a white person, of course he'll never understand what it is like to not just inhabit a person of color's body, but to travel while black.
When I go abroad, I feel the weight of the world on my shoulders to be a good example of a black woman.
When I go abroad, I feel the weight of the world on my shoulders to be a good example of a black woman so negative stereotypes don't continue, especially in homogeneous cultures where there is a lack of diversity. The media doesn't exactly portray black people incredibly well, and people watch it and make assumptions about what we're like based on the color of our skin. In some places, they've rarely even seen a black person in real life.
I am constantly aware of every move I make when I step outside of the United States. There is not a single moment when I am not cognizant of how I'm representing myself as I walk through the streets of Bangkok or photograph the monuments of Paris. It's a stinging fear of my presence in their country not being a positive one and therefore contributing to their biases toward people who look like me. When a white person does something unfortunate, they don't become an example of their entire race. But when one black person does something wrong, it paints us all that way in the eyes of others.
I feel that I am lucky that my travels have not included overt racism toward me, and that shows me the world is changing a lot in its ideals and how it treats people. For some, an article such as this might be talking about the moments of discrimination they've faced while journeying, but I am thankful that I've seemingly been born in a time that lends better to my presence in a place not leading to a negative slur or race-based attacked. The worst treatment has unfortunately come from my being a woman more than anything else.
When a white person does something unfortunate, they don't become an example of their entire race. But when one black person does something wrong, it paints us all that way in the eyes of others.
I think of all the people in the past who looked like me and had adventurous spirits but couldn't go anywhere, and I feel that I have no right at all to complain about what it's like today. Black people are traveling more than ever. It's not a secret that there are many websites and Facebook groups out there that cater to a diverse group of travelers to inspire and connect with one another. There are finally amazing travel bloggers of color going to places in the world and reporting on what it's like to actually be there, sharing their experiences as diverse globetrotters.
But the numbers are still small compared to affluent white voyagers. Fear of how you may be treated, discouragement from your family and peers, or even just lack of resources to make a trip happen mean that there are still fewer people of color stepping out into much of the world, and there are instances of black people being stared at or even pulled into photographs like a celebrity because of their rare appearances in certain cultures. I have yet to be the subject of a selfie, but I have gotten called "Beyoncé" and "Oprah" before, despite looking nothing like them.
Traveling as a black woman is a form of activism to me. I strive to change perceptions through my actions abroad. I never want to leave a country having made a local citizen think lesser of black people due to something I have done. I act respectfully, dress according to cultural standards, attempt to learn basic words in their language, respond politely, and interact cordially with those I meet. It's all done in order to maintain some sort of picture that I am not whatever ill-willed nonsense American media wants to portray me as and that there's no reason to be afraid or suspicious of my actions, just in the same way I wouldn't want a security guard following me through a store as I shop.
I still think back to when we stayed the extra night in Tokyo and what the owner of the hotel must think of me or if they even noticed or cared, and I hope it didn't reflect badly on my kinfolk who stay there in the future. Perhaps I'm overthinking it too much and should relax, but it's because I do care about the future of black travel that I pour so much of my heart into my behaviors abroad and only want to be the best I can be so things are better for everyone in the times to come.

The 1 Tip From a Dietitian That'll Help You Understand Overeating - And Finally Stop
There's a fine line between feeling satisfied after a meal and feeling stuffed. A lot of us fly past that line all the time and don't see it until it's far, far too late - slumped over, holding your stomach, undoing the top button of your jeans. The physical discomfort will thankfully pass, but overeating can also have long-term consequences, especially if you're trying to lose weight. Wouldn't it be great if we could just tell when we're perfectly satisfied and then . . . stop?
"Eat until you are no longer hungry, not until you are full," is the way Kristin Kirkpatrick, a registered dietitian at the Cleveland Clinic's Wellness Institute, puts it. But what's the distinction there, and how do you make it happen? For many of us, the feelings of hunger don't seem to stop until we're as full as we can possibly be. For me, that means post-dinner snacks like cereal, applesauce, or carrots - something to nibble on to fill up that last little bit. This is fine if you're still actively feeling hungry, Kristin said. But if you leave a meal still knowing you could pack a little more in, even though you feel satisfied, it might actually be time to stop.
"If we truly tap into hunger cues," Kristin said, "we would only eat when we feel hunger" - not just to fill up the last empty space in our stomach. This can be a tough distinction to make. One way to do it? Just slow down. Kristin said there's research to show that chewing more can help prevent overeating, and a 2017 study proved that slower eaters are less likely to gain weight. Even beyond that, slowing down gives you that extra time to check in with your body and see if you're satisfied. (Eating tasty, filling food helps too - here are some options to get you started.)
What you're trying to avoid is that feeling of being uncomfortably full: heavy, bloated, tired, like there's "a brick in your stomach," Kristin said. You probably know what it feels like to be overfull or really hungry; now it's a matter of distinguishing between the finer points in the scale until you hit your perfect, satisfied state. "Over time, it becomes easier to sense," Kristin said.
So at your next meal, try chewing more, slowing down your bites, and asking yourself how you're actually feeling before moving on to the next thing. Still hungry? Go for it. Feeling sated? Great - take a break and set down the fork. Tuning into your body's hunger cues will help you shed pounds and, even better, feel fueled instead of overfull.
This Is How I Lost Over 100 Pounds - Without "Going on a Diet"
People ask me all the time how I lost over 100 pounds. What did you eat? What did you do exercise-wise? Well, to be completely honest, I never went on a diet. When it came to my eating, it was about learning about portion control, quality of food, and knowing when you need to satisfy a craving. It was about changing my mindset when it came to eating better and being consistent. As for my workout routine, I incorporated at least three to four days of strength training. That made a much bigger impact in my weight-loss journey than basic running on a treadmill did. The following are five rules or tips that I used to lose the weight and keep it off.
No Diet
As I said before, I lost over 100 pounds without going on a diet. I actually do not even like the word diet itself. You should never have to deprive yourself of any food group. For me personally, the more you tell me, "No, you can not have this," the more I want it. I just learned how to eat properly. I learned proper portion control and choosing the right foods. I started cooking more at home and stopped going out to restaurants as often because when you make your own food, you see what is actually in it. I made small rules for myself, like I would not eat anything that comes out of a box and no eating after 8 p.m. Also, if I had a craving, I would satisfy it and then get back to eating healthy and exercising regularly. Slow and steady wins the race. You won't be overwhelmed this way, and you will still make progress.
Strength Train
When I first started working out, I had absolutely no idea what I was doing. I walked into the gym extremely intimidated and only really knew how to use the treadmill. Then I hired a trainer and he taught me the importance of strength training, and I learned that building muscle burns fat. I started seeing incredible results and I barely ever went on a treadmill. I learned proper lifting techniques and form and still incorporated some conditioning into my workouts.
Eat Lots of Apples
As the old saying goes, "An apple a day keeps the doctor away." Apples are the best trick to lose weight. They curb your sweet tooth cravings and because of the fiber in the apple, it will help satisfy hunger and slow the digestion of food. Apples are easy and helpful to incorporate in your diet if you are trying to lose weight. Add a nut butter to your apple for some extra protein as a perfect post-workout snack.
Stay Positive and Consistent
Not every day is going to be perfect. No one in this world is perfect when it comes to their eating and exercise regimen. Some days are going to be harder than others, but you just have to have the mindset that you are going to get back up after you fall off. If you want to cheat and have a cheat meal, it is important to not feel guilty about it. Inside your head, you just have to have the mindset that afterward you are going to go back to your healthy eating and exercise routine and not just fall off completely.
Sleep
Everyone tells you that sleep is super important, and it is completely true. Being well-rested will give you more energy to tackle the day, and it will also help with metabolism. Now, sleep alone will not make you lose weight, but incorporated with a balanced lifestyle and healthy eating and physical activity, good sleep will help you see the results faster. Poor sleep can result in slower metabolism and increased appetite, and it can make it harder to make healthier food choices throughout the day.
Now, is it easy to lose over 100 pounds? Absolutely not. It takes time, patience, focus, and dedication. Most people don't have the personal motivation to succeed. There is only one person you can blame for the choices you make. Incorporating these tips in your lifestyle can help you get on the right track to becoming a better you and help you shed those extra pounds.
Are You a Coffee-Lover Trying to Build Muscle? These Powders and Shakes Are For You
Eating more protein is an essential step in the muscle-building process because the macronutrient is the building block of muscle and it helps build and repair tissue. Protein also helps you feel fuller and boosts your metabolism (aka adding protein-rich foods to a well-balanced diet can aid in weight loss). Daily intake of protein varies depending on what your goals are, so check out this formula for how many grams you should have per day.
Adding powders and shakes to your diet is an easy (and delicious) way to meet these gram requirements. With so many brands and flavors to choose from, finding ones you like can seem daunting. But starting with what you know is a great way to dive right in. Take coffee, for instance. By now, it's probably an old friend - something you count on for early-morning companionship and midday support. If you're searching for coffee protein powders and shakes to buy online, look no further. Read on for a comprehensive list, from one coffee lover to another. Note: most of these products contain caffeine, but we've included some that are simply coffee flavored.

Experts Weigh In: Does Running Help You Lose Belly Fat?
In our never-ending quest to lose the belly fat, many of us will come across the old adage that running is the Holy Grail we've been looking for. So instead of doing 300 crunches every night, should you be running around the block instead? Is running good for reducing inches around the waist? We went straight to the experts in order to get a more comprehensive answer.
According to Lauren Lobert, DPT, OMPT, CSCS, and owner of APEX Physical Therapy, running is a great way to burn calories, but "you can't spot-train fat loss. You cannot choose where you lose your fat when you lose weight. It doesn't matter if you only do crunches - if you're prone to belly fat, then you will likely lose it from that area last." She advises that in relation to physical activities, "strength training is actually the best way to change your body composition, as your metabolic rate will be increased for two to three days after lifting weights. It will also cause you to gain muscle mass, which burns more calories at rest."
But that doesn't mean you should dismiss the virtues of running completely. Dr. Carolyn Dean, MD, ND, author of The Magnesium Miracle, explains to POPSUGAR that "running can stimulate the metabolism, which is needed to burn fat, and running also burns calories, so if your intake of calories is less than the amount you are burning through running, you will lose belly fat." However, she advocates the importance of nutrition when trying to reduce belly fat. Dr. Dean recommends "a low-carb, high-fat, moderate-protein diet along with proper hydration and proper mineral intake" to play a crucial role in eliminating inches from the waistline. By following a keto-like diet of restricting carbs and increasing high-quality fats, the body will "use up carbohydrate stores of sugar called glycogen, and then turn on the fat-burning process to burn excess body fat cells as energy."
All These Low-Carb Snacks Are Under 150 Calories Per Serving - Yep, That's Right!
Snack time around the POPSUGAR office is no joke; it's practically a necessity to have a great mid-afternoon pick-me-up. It may seem like a lot to ask, but we've actually found 17 yummy snacks that meet that strict criteria. Oh, and they're all on Amazon.

13 Bodyweight Exercises That Keep Me Strong After 10 Years as a Competitive Gymnast
I did gymnastics for 15 years growing up and competed for 10. To quote Stick It, "The things gymnasts do make Navy SEALs look like wusses. And we do them without a gun!" Don't get me wrong, I was no Simone Biles or Katelyn Ohashi, but I had abs of steel and a love for the sport.
I never wanted to let go of striving to compete on the collegiate level, but when I realized my body couldn't handle the strain, I had to change my perspective and find another way to stay in shape. That's when I became a gym rat (and yes, I was that girl who did splits in the corner during my cooldowns).
Before the end of every gymnastics practice, we'd do half-hour sessions of conditioning. This included a lot of bodyweight exercises that kept our arms, abs, and quads strong so that, after flying through the air, we'd land on our feet safely. Here are the moves I still incorporate into my sweat sessions today. Add a few - some of which you'll recognize - to your next workout for an extra challenge.
Keep Tabs on the Wellness World With These Health and Fitness Podcasts
When Self announced it was discontinuing its print edition in 2016, former fitness editor and Hurdle podcast host Emily Abbate needed to find a new outlet for her creativity. "I was sitting on my couch one day chatting with a girlfriend when I said the sentence, 'I just want to get over this hurdle.' And suddenly, it all clicked," Emily told POPSUGAR. "I wanted to connect with big names in the industry to hear about how they got to where they are and the hurdles they've conquered along the way."
The first official episode of Hurdle went live on New Year's Eve 2017. It discussed Emily's own "hurdle moment" that kick-started a 70-pound weight-loss journey in college. Now, 40 episodes later, she said she hopes people will find inspiration "to be better" with just one listen.
Hurdle, though unique in its own right, is not alone in the realm of fitness podcasts that promise to motivate and inform. It's one thing to stay fit, but to stay fit while keeping up on wellness news and trends can be a daunting task. That's where podcasts come in. Some shows, like FoundMyFitness, spend a lot of time delving into studies on health and how the body works. Others are sport-specific, like the running-focused Morning Shakeout. Ahead, we've compiled a handful of shows that provide insight from pro athletes, trainers, and nutritionists alike. Whether you're into weightlifting, racing, or clean eating (or all three!), you'll find something on this list for you and your fitness journey.
