11 Real-Life Towns That Are Pretty Much Stars Hollow Come to Life
There are a ton of reasons we've been obsessed with Gilmore Girls for almost 20 years now: its quirky characters, surprisingly great life lessons, and rapid-fire dialogue. But perhaps the best part of the entire show is Stars Hollow, the fictional Connecticut small town where the Gilmores (and a wide array of colorful townspeople) live. Stars Hollow is basically its own character; its quirks (Taylor), history (the gazebo), and longstanding businesses (Luke's) form the backbone of what makes Gilmore Girls so unique.
According to Gilmore lore, Stars Hollow was founded by early colonial settlers and even played a (roundabout) part in a battle in the Revolutionary War. It's as proud of its small-town charm as it is its centuries of history. And although some of the antics seem too silly to be real, there are actually plenty of small towns across America that are as historical, charming, and occasionally over-the-top as Stars Hollow. If you're looking to immerse yourself in a real Gilmore experience, add these real-life small towns to your bucket list.

I've Been on 67 Solo Flights With My Toddler - Here's What I've Learned
The first time I flew with my daughter, Lucy, was when she was 4 months old, and it was a four-hour direct flight from New York City to Denver. I was so panicked from the endless parenting threads on Facebook about airport disasters, mean flight attendants, and packing lists that I decided to do a dry run the day before. For four hours, I sat in the corner of my local coffee shop with Lucy hanging out on my lap. And you know what? Nothing happened.
And nothing happened on that first plane ride, either. As a single mom, I was always the only one traveling with her, and I always had her in my lap. Children are free (with the exception of taxes for international flights) as lap infants until their second birthday, and I wanted to maximize our savings while we could.
At 3 1/2, my daughter has now been on 63 flights. That's counting connections and puddle-hoppers and international and domestic trips. And even when it's stressful, I remind myself how lucky I am to be traveling with my favorite plus-one. Some perspective: the worst flight I ever took was when I was in my 20s, hungover and sad from a breakup and sure I was going to throw up. Even a flight with a cranky toddler I love is a million times better than that sad, nausea-inducing flight - and I try to remember that whenever we hit a rough patch.
I know that my daughter represents a grand sample size of one. But I also know how scared I was before that first flight and wish there had been words of encouragement in the midst of all the praying emoji on those Facebook groups. Here's what I've learned.
- Altitude isn't some sort of attitude changer. In general, I think how infants behave on land is how they behave in the air. Sure, there are air pressure changes, which can cause discomfort (which can be minimized by breastfeeding, bottle feeding, or sucking on a pacifier), but in general, kids don't go through some profound personality change just because they're at 45,000 feet.
- You don't need a seat for your child. Sure, it's nice to have. But you truly can sit for seven or eight hours with a 30-pound child sprawled on your lap. Use each other as pillows!
- You need two extra changes of clothes for them . . . and for you. Feeling poop leak onto your jeans and being powerless to stop it because the seat belt sign is lit is a million times worse when you know there are no clean jeans in your future.
- You don't need a ton of toys. On one trip from New York to California when my daughter was about 1 1/2, I had been in such a hurry that I hadn't packed any toys. We had a mini stuffed pony, a toothbrush, and some stickers. Was it the best flight ever? No. Did we make it where we needed to be? Sure did.
- You don't need to give presents to your seatmates. I don't believe in goody bags to apologize for an infant on board. I do believe in a friendly smile, an introduction, and recognizing we are all just trying to get from point A to point B.
- Try to have fun in the terminal. You're going somewhere! It's an adventure! I grab food, let my daughter pick a treat at the news kiosk, and just generally de-stress and walk around. When my daughter was crawling, I tried not to worry about germs as she crawled around the gate. My philosophy: the more tired they are at the gate, the more tired they'll be on the plane.
- It's OK to judiciously play the kid card. Sometimes, having a kid with you works better than Global Entry. In general, I've found that asking for what you need politely and respectfully can help you get it - including allowing you to a skip a line.
Finally, and I think this is the biggest thing I'm still learning: your experience is different than your child's experience. You might be stressed about flight delays and gate changes, but they could be totally chill. For example, when my daughter and I were waiting for an endlessly delayed flight from Budapest to London, I was checking my watch, trying to assess how many hours we would have to sleep when and if we ever got to our hotel. She had found a little girl about the same age as her and had begun happily playing with her Peppa Pig figurines. For her, a delay was fun. I'm not quite there yet, but I'm trying to find that perspective.
It's not all sunshine, rainbows, and clear skies. Some flights will become family legend. But I think the best thing to aim for is an unremarkable trip. But you don't need the gear, the note cards, or the precision-level planning to have an amazing trip with your child. Just enjoy the ride.

4 Things I've Learned From Being Pretty "For a Black Girl"
Once or twice a month, when I'm at home on the couch with a glass of wine, I check a dating app. I have a hard time making the first move, but I can't tell you how many messages I get that bring up race right away, or the number of (white) guys that reach out to me with, "You're really pretty for a black girl." The first time I can remember being confronted with this "fact" was in seventh grade. I had a huge crush on a (white) guy in my science class and - with an amount of courage that I wish I could muster as an adult - I asked him to an upcoming school dance. He turned me down, saying that he didn't like me "that way," and perhaps the deflated look on my face inspired some sort of need on his part to explain further, so he added, "I only date white girls. But just so you know, you are the prettiest black girl in school."
Even now, I can remember exactly what was going through my head; We're 12. How do you know you only date white girls? - I was a very pragmatic child - followed by, He thinks I'm pretty! I knew it made me uncomfortable, but I was a noodle-legged, acne-ridden preteen who would have taken any compliment I could get. Needless to say, this same guy's Facebook friend request from last year is still marinating in my inbox, because along with being pragmatic, I can also be a little petty.
When it comes to socializing and dating as an adult, there has been no shortage of these same "compliments" from guys that I meet, whether in person or online. The conversation typically starts with "So . . . what are you?" before progressing into some variation of "You're the most beautiful black girl I've ever seen." My favorite part of this is watching them navigate my face as it twists into some combination of a simper and a grimace while I think to myself, Here we go again, followed by, You obviously haven't seen Beyoncé. I try to glean lessons from everything that happens to me in life, so here are four things I've learned from being pretty "for a black girl."
1. It's not a compliment - actually, it's pretty f*cking racist.
Growing up, I had such horrible self-esteem that I would graciously accept any compliment that came my way, especially from the opposite sex. If you told me that I was pretty "for a black girl," all I heard was "you're pretty." As time went on, though, I recognized that attaching a person's overall attractiveness to his or her race is horribly offensive. Think about it: you may as well be saying, "All black girls are ugly - but you're not! Congratulations! Can I buy you a drink?" Telling someone that they are attractive "for" their race goes deep; it affirms a belief that there is something fundamentally wrong with being a person of color and further perpetuates the notion that they are racial others - especially because white women can be regarded as pretty simply for being white.
2. It's also an immediate dealbreaker.
By telling me that I'm "really pretty for a black girl," that person is letting me know that they are clueless, ignorant, and painfully unoriginal. They are essentially saving me a lot of time and energy by confirming that they aren't even smart or crafty enough to google the phrase "best compliments to give a woman" or search, "Is it rude to compliment a woman on her race?" I just did it, and it literally took five seconds.
3. Not only am I more than my looks, but I'm also more than a stereotype.
The world has always been made up of people who looked different from one another and were beautiful in their own ways. Somewhere down the line, we were taught that white, European features were the epitome of beauty, and sadly, that way of thinking is still common across the globe. Physical features like wide hips, an ample butt, and full lips are often made to seem overly sexualized and even vulgar on black and Latina women - even though they are inherently characteristic among women of color - but those same features are widely considered to be attractive on white women. It's an analysis that is especially relevant today and typically brought to the table when discussing cultural appropriation, stereotypes, and the Kardashians. I'd be lying if I said that I don't second-guess a guy's motives when he makes comments about my race, asks me about my ethnic background, or assumes I know how to twerk (an actual message I've received on Tinder). Sure, it makes meeting potential dates much harder, but I'd rather be single than someone's interracial relationship experiment.
4. You know what? I don't even NEED to be called pretty.
As I've gotten older, I've realized that I don't need to be immediately recognized for my looks, because let's be real: isn't that why the person was first interested? Isn't that why they approached me, or swiped right, or asked my friend if I was single? They can save their flattering remarks for my sense of humor, or my dance moves, or my ability to finish a crossword puzzle in 10 minutes. I'm totally OK with being complimented - as long as it's not "for a black girl."

Woman's Security Camera Catches Her Dogs Running to Get Help While She Had a Stroke
A Florida woman owes her life to her two Labradors, Bella and Sadie. After collapsing in her home due to a blood clot that caused a stroke, Maureen Hatcher saw Sadie and asked her to get help - and thank goodness, because according to her doctor, Dr. Nima Aghaebrahim, it was likely what prevented permanent brain damage, or worse.
"I said, 'Mommy needs help,' and then they were gone," Maureen told First Coast News. The two dogs bolted from the house, which was caught on Maureen's Ring video doorbell camera, and signaled down a neighbor who then entered the house and called 911 after finding Maureen on the floor. Paramedics rushed Maureen to Baptist Medical Center's comprehensive stroke center, where her blood clot was removed and her life was saved.
"By rights, I shouldn't be in the shape that I'm in," Maureen said. "I am blessed . . . very blessed."
What good girls!
You Won't Look at Your Pet the Same After Reading This Mom's Emotional Post About Not Knowing She Was Pregnant
Joanna Ahti, a mom of two from Montreal, recently penned an open letter about how her beloved cat Pippit helped her through a difficult time in her life. Reflecting on a post she wrote a year ago, Joanna explained how her four-legged friend may have known she was pregnant before she did in an emotional Facebook post about having a miscarriage. In her original post, Joanna said she initially thought Pippit was giving her some extra cuddles because she was crying during a sad episode of This Is Us. Fast-forward to a year later, and she learned the real reason.
"Two weeks after I posted this a year ago, we experienced our first loss," wrote Joanna. "I hadn't known I was pregnant, but I have photos of Pippit hugging me like this as I slept while I was pregnant with Liam. I was emotional, exhausted, and couldn't help but fall asleep when I least expected to."
"I often wonder how it was possible that I hadn't known I was carrying our second child."
For Joanna, looking back at the photo is surreal. "I look back at this now, and it's hard to swallow," she said. "I often wonder how it was possible that I hadn't known I was carrying our second child. I was four months pregnant and I had no idea. People often make fun of women who don't realize they are pregnant, but as someone who has experienced it firsthand, let me tell you how possible it truly is."
Despite not knowing she was pregnant, having a miscarriage was still a devastating experience. "I was still breastfeeding Liam, which made my cycle irregular and impossible to track," she said. "I had no symptoms. Nothing felt any different. I had no idea. 'She must have known she was pregnant.' No. If you ever believe that someone wants to find out they were having a baby in the exact same moment they give birth at home and lose their child, think again."
Now, Joanna wants to remind other moms to go easy on themselves, and that a little compassion can go a long way.
"It has now almost been a year, and instead of making myself feel guilty for not knowing, or beating myself up, I will read my own words back to me," she said. "I think many of us try to show how strong we are all of the time and we forget that we too, are human. Feel. Be human. Never let anyone, (including yourself), make you feel stupid or diminished just because their experience is different from yours."
Häagen-Dazs Is Releasing a Boozy Ice Cream Collection, and I Can't Contain My Excitement
You're probably not exactly craving ice cream right now due to current weather conditions, but thanks to Häagen-Dazs, that's likely about to change. The ice cream brand is releasing an all-new Spirits Collection featuring five boozy flavors, a new cookie square, and a nondairy option that are all definitely worth bearing the cold for. With flavors like Irish Cream Brownie and Bourbon Vanilla Bean Truffle, each pint is made to pair perfectly with some of your favorite cocktails. We'll cheers to that!
If you're worried about what might happen if you eat a whole carton in one sitting (we've all been there), fret not. Though these ice creams are made to taste like cocktails and spirits, each flavor contains less than 0.5 percent alcohol, so don't expect to feel buzzed after indulging. The Häagen-Dazs Spirits Collection will be widely available in freezer aisles around the nation this April. Take a look at the new flavors ahead, and start making some room in your freezer STAT.
Chocolate-Covered Strawberries in No Time at All
If there's one thing I could eat every day, it's chocolate and fruit. Chocolate-covered strawberries are one of those decadent desserts that people save for special, romantic occasions, but I don't really understand that. This technique for dipping your strawberries in melted chocolate is so simple, it can and should be enjoyed regularly. While many recipes tell you to melt chocolate and butter together, I find that the chocolate chips melt perfectly on their own, and I like to keep things as simple as possible. I use semisweet chocolate chips, but feel free to use whatever your taste buds prefer. Click through to follow along.

Bella Hadid Got a Haircut, and Now We're Convinced 2019 Is the Year of the Bangs
It seems like everyone in Hollywood is trying out bangs this year. It was one of the most popular styles spotted during award season red carpets and Kendall Jenner just tried out the trend. Now, her buddy Bella Hadid is getting in on the fun. The supermodel arrived at a Michael Kors event this week with a new wispy fringe with longer pieces on each side of her face. It's unclear if these are a clip-in style or she really chopped her hair, but there's no doubt she looks bangin'. Check out photos of the look ahead.
Kelly Rowland on Her Short Hair in Destiny's Child: "It Was This Statement of Individuality"
Kelly Rowland has a lot of love for her hair - or, as she calls it, her "crown" - but that hasn't always been the case. As a preteen, the Destiny's Child alum struggled with embracing her natural texture due to mainstream perceptions about how women's hair should look. But by her earlier days with the girl group, that feeling managed to fade into the background thanks to the statement-making pixie cut she was known to sport. "I thought I was fly, period," she told POPSUGAR. "But I was like, 'Okay. I love my hair.' I felt like I was, amongst four girls, people knew that it was me. It was this statement of individuality."
For Rowland, wanting to encourage others to embrace their texture is what drew her to Dove's newest campaign, which emboldens young women to wear their hair proudly. The singer recently partnered with the beauty brand on the release of her new song, "Crown," which is now available on Spotify. "I remember when my mom used to say, 'Your hair was your crowning glory,'" Rowland said, explaining the meaning behind the song's lyrics.
[It's] all about instilling confidence in this next generation of girls so they don't have to succumb to the beauty standards of what other people think is gorgeous hair.
"Crown" couldn't have been released at a better time, as more and more young women - including Faith Fennidy, who appears in its accompanying music video - are becoming victims of hair discrimination on platforms small and large. For that reason, Rowland hopes to shift our understanding of what it means to have beautiful hair and encourage people to celebrate all types of it. "[It's] all about instilling confidence in this next generation of girls so they don't have to succumb to the beauty standards of what other people think is gorgeous hair," she said. "It's the way they want to do it. And they start changing the narrative of what beautiful hair is to them. It's your hair. It's their hair. It's my hair. It's everybody's hair. It doesn't have to be one thing or look like one thing. It's different colors, textures, everything."
How does she go about caring for her crowning glory? Her go-to hair product list is actually pretty simple: "I swear by coconut oil as a conditioner," she said. "[And] castor oil to kind of like - because it's thicker, to kind of lay my edges down." Rowland is also a big fan of protective styles like braids and cornrows, though she's not opposed to big chopping if she really wants to switch things up. "I'm going to do that when I'm 50. Cut it all off," she laughed. "It just looks so free."
You can listen to "Crown" now on Spotify and watch the music video ahead.

Wednesday marked a sisters' night out for Kim and Kourtney Kardashian at the amfAR New York Gala. Kim and Kourtney spent the evening mingling with other celebrities in attendance and striking sultry poses on and off the red carpet. Those curves, they're dangerous!

The Masked Singer: A Guide to Which Celebrities Have Been Revealed, and Who's Still Left
The Masked Singer might be the most bonkers reality show on TV at the moment, but nevertheless, I can't help but find myself fascinated by the mystery of which thirsty celebrity is lurking behind each of those bizarre, nightmarish masks that look like rejected outfits from the Spy Kids costume department.
Hosted by Nick Cannon, the Fox reality competition series is the US remake of the popular South Korean show King of Mask Singer. It began with 12 singing celebrities, with one being eliminated each week. The catch? Each of the contestants wears head-to-toe costumes concealing every inch of their identities from not only the audience but also the panelists and other contestants. Panelists Ken Jeong, Jenny McCarthy, Nicole Scherzinger, and Robin Thicke receive small hints about who the singer might be over the course of the show and then try to guess their identities.
Warning: spoilers for The Masked Singer to follow!
So far we've unmasked Hippo (NFL player Antonio Brown), Pineapple (comedian Tommy Chong), Unicorn (Beverly Hills, 90210's Tori Spelling), and a few others. So if you're wondering who's behind the masks of Raven, Lion, Peacock, Monster, and the rest, keep reading!
The Bachelor: Kirpa's Chinjury Is No Longer a Mystery! Here's What Happened in Thailand
The Bachelor franchise is not afraid to keep things from fans. Like, do the contestants get to work out during the show? Why does Colton Underwood shower five times per episode? And the biggest mystery of all: WHAT HAPPENED TO KIRPA'S CHIN? The 26-year-old dental hygienist randomly appeared in Monday night's episode with a bandage on her chin, after what I like to call: a chinjury. After a two-hour episode with zero explanation, we're finally getting some answers, and it sounds painful.
In a clip of a deleted scene from Monday night's episode, Kirpa says, "Thailand's f*cked me up, not in a good way." She explains the brutal situation and what happened when she took a tumble in an effort to "be basic" and get the photo. "Five stitches later and a sprained wrist, and here I am!" she said. Hey, at least she's staying positive. Watch the video ahead, and see how other confused Bachelor fans reeled over her chinjury mystery.
OMG: James Corden and Billy Crystal Recreated When Harry Met Sally's Most Iconic Scene
Well, here's something I never thought I'd watch in my lifetime: James Corden and Billy Crystal recreating When Harry Met Sally's most iconic, eyebrow-raising scene, with Corden in the role of Meg Ryan. But alas, here we all are!
In a sketch on The Late Late Show on Tuesday, Corden and Crystal stop by a diner and get to chatting over lunch. Crystal assured the talk show host that he's a great late night guest, and that all hosts enjoy having him on their programs because of how much he makes them laugh.
"Some guests, frankly they think they're way more interesting than they really are," said Corden, seated across from Crystal in the restaurant.
"Talk show hosts love having me on as a guest," Crystal responded, before Corden asked, "How do you know?"
Just like Harry and Sally do in the Rob Reiner-directed rom-com, the pair get to talking about "faking it," and Corden helpfully demonstrates his most genuine fake laugh. Of course, make sure you watch until the very end of the sketch, because Corden recruited a very special guest to utter the scene's famous closing line:
14-Year-Old Marsai Martin Is Set to Become the Youngest Executive Producer in History
Black-ish star Marsai Martin is about to make history. The 14-year-old actress is gearing up to be the youngest executive producer of a major Hollywood movie in history. You read that right. She's 14, and she's out here making movies (and starring in them). Whew. She'll bear the title when her film Little, starring Insecure's Issa Rae and Girls Trip's Regina Hall, hits theaters this Spring.
The movie centers around a woman named Jordan Sanders (Hall), whose callous behavior causes her to become cursed by a little girl. Jordan then turns back into her 13-year-old self (Martin), who must relive her childhood. In an interview with The Root, Martin confirmed that the movie is inspired by Tom Hank's 1988 classic Big. "It was one of my most favorite films growing up," she said. "After the [season one] finale of Black-ish, we told Kenya Barris about it, and he called Will [Packer] and said: 'Yo, you know the girl who plays Diane on Black-ish? She has this dope idea!'"
Martin tweeted about her excitement for fans to see the film after the trailer dropped in January. "So happy to finally be able to share the trailer, so proud of the things accomplished since we started this and eternally grateful to you guys for listening when others didn't take us seriously," she wrote.
So happy to finally be able to share the trailer, so proud of the things accomplished since we started this and eternally grateful to you guys for listening when others didn't take us seriously ♥️ @TracyYOliver https://t.co/gFvElJrgGu
- Marsai Martin (@marsaimartin) January 10, 2019
I wonder what those people who didn't take her seriously were doing at 14 years old. Certainly not producing Hollywood films, that's for sure. Watch the trailer for Little before it hits theaters on April 12!
We Are Blessed: For the Fifth Year in a Row, Lady Gaga Will Perform at the Grammys
Here's some exciting news to "fill that void" - Lady Gaga will perform at the Grammys this year and will likely sing "Shallow." Are we blessed, or what?
On Tuesday, the Recording Academy announced that the Oscar-nominated A Star Is Born actress will take the stage at the organization's 61st annual ceremony on Sunday, which marks her fifth performance in a row. Since 2015, Gaga - who is up for five Grammys this year - has hit the stage for everything from a colorful, moving David Bowie tribute, to a collaboration with Metallica that convinced everyone she needed to put out a hard rock album.
Although the Academy has yet to confirm that "Shallow" will be the song Gaga does indeed perform, it seems like there's a pretty strong chance. The song is nominated for record of the year, song of the year, best song written for visual media, and best pop duo performance. While Gaga is also nominated for best pop performance for "Joanne (Where Do You Think You're Goin'?)," she performed that song at last year's show, so it seems highly unlikely she'd sing it again. Here's hoping she brings Bradley Cooper out to sing with her.
In addition to Gaga, performers include: Travis Scott, Chloe x Halle, Fantasia, Andra Day, Dua Lipa, St. Vincent, Cardi B, Camila Cabello, Post Malone, Kacey Musgraves, Janelle Monáe, and Dan + Shay. The Perfectionists: Alison and Mona Return in the PLL Spinoff's Chilling First Trailer
It's been quite some time since we left the little town of Rosewood for good, but now, the legacy of Pretty Little Liars will live on. Last year, Freeform announced a new series that would be connected to the Pretty Little Liars universe: The Perfectionists. With the premiere inching ever closer, we now have our first look at the chilling new series, which takes us to a quaint community in the Pacific Northwest (Beacon Heights) that is rocked by an unthinkable act: murder.
"Everything about the town of Beacon Heights seems perfect, from their top-tier college to their overachieving residents," the synopsis reads. "The stress of needing to be perfect leads to the town's first murder. Behind every Perfectionist is a secret, a lie and a needed alibi." Do you have goosebumps? We sure do. Luckily, we don't have to wait too long to see the next chapter in the lives of Mona Vanderwaal and Alison DiLaurentis; Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists will premiere on Freeform on March 20.
All the TV Shows That Have Been Canceled (or Are Coming to an End) in 2019
After a stellar year full of exceptional TV shows, we almost forgot that we might have to say goodbye to a few of them in 2019. Alas, even though it's only February, a few networks have already given some of their shows the boot. While we've known for quite some time that certain beloved series would be wrapping up this year - The Big Bang Theory, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend - other announcements have caught us by surprise. Take a look at all dramas, comedies, and everything in between that will take its last on-air gasp in 2019, ahead.
The Sun Is Also a Star Trailer: Yara Shahidi and Charles Melton Fall in Love Against All Odds
Could you fall in love over the course of a single day? Upon first glance, that's the premise of The Sun Is Also a Star, in which college-bound hopeless romantic Daniel (Riverdale's Charles Melton) attempts to convince matter-of-fact Natasha (Grown-ish's Yara Shahidi) that he can make her fall head over heels for him in just 24 magical hours. But there's a catch, just as there's far more to this YA adaptation of Nicola Yoon's novel than initially meets the eye.
Natasha has been fiercely fighting against her family's sudden deportation back to Jamaica, so a future with Daniel seems not only unlikely, but flat out impossible. Despite their unfortunate situation, the star-crossed pair can't help but deny the sparks flying between them on what might be Natasha's last day in America. Regardless of if they figure out a way to stay together or not, we can already tell this movie is going to make us weep. (Buckets.) Watch the first trailer above, before it arrives in theaters on May 17.
Lea Michele Covered "Shallow" With Darren Criss, and Yes, She Nails THAT Note
Do you ever go on an obsessive deep-dive of a TV show or movie you love, only to uncover hidden gems you never realized existed in the first place? That's how I stumbled across Lea Michele's A Star Is Born cover with Darren Criss.
The former Glee costars went on tour together last year, and like many of us, became quickly obsessed with a certain Oscar-nominated song. They decided to cover Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper's "Shallow" duet at their San Francisco concert in October 2018, and wow, did they give a powerful performance. As award season rages on, it seems appropriate to revisit this performance and revel in *that* high note. You know the one.
Watch Michele and Criss's full cover above. Maybe they can give Cooper some tips to help him keep calm while singing at the Oscars - it sounds like he's pretty nervous.
Watch the Intense Trailer For HBO’s Documentary Series About Serial's Adnan Syed
Source: Courtesy of Serial Podcast
A docuseries about Adnan Syed, whose story rose to fame through the Serial podcast, is coming to HBO. The Case Against Adnan Syed is directed by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Amy Berg and will trace "how the rush to justice and Syed's conviction in 2000 raised more questions than answers about what happened to Hae Min Lee, underscoring the instability of memory and conflicting eyewitnesses," Entertainment Weekly first reported.
The Serial podcast rose to popularity beginning in 2015 by reexamining Syed's Baltimore murder case, which was closed. He was convicted of murdering his ex-girlfriend, Hae Min Lee, and sentenced to life in prison in 2000. The four-hour-long documentary series will feature interviews with Syed, his family, friends of Syed and Lee, and members of the Baltimore law enforcement. Musicians Nick Cave and Warren Ellis will produce the score. Watch the newly released trailer above.
According to Vanity Fair, the series will be released this Spring. Currently, Syed is still in prison and maintains his innocence.
Kylie Jenner Flashes a HUGE Diamond Ring on Her Left Hand - Are She and Travis Scott Engaged?
Despite speculation that Travis Scott would be proposing to Kylie Jenner at the Super Bowl, it looks like it was just a rumor - or was it? Even though the 26-year-old rapper didn't make the grand gesture of proposing to the 21-year-old reality TV star during his halftime performance, Kylie was spotted wearing a giant diamond ring on that finger. On Sunday, Travis posted a photo of Kylie smiling and flashing the sparkly bauble on his Instagram Stories, and Kylie also flaunted the ring on her own Instagram account. Hmm . . . so does this mean Travis and Kylie are engaged?
Well, before you jump to any conclusions, it's worth noting that Kylie has teased us like this before. Back in January, she posted a series of snaps wearing a diamond ring on her left hand. Not to mention, she also recently referred to Travis as her husband. An engagement wouldn't be surprising, though, given that the couple have been together for almost two years now and are already parents to 1-year-old daughter Stormi. So, what's the truth, Kylie?
Watch Out, 2019: Meghan Markle Is Just Getting Started
To say that Meghan Markle has had a whirlwind couple of years is a pretty big understatement. She's hit a handful of major milestones since getting engaged to Prince Harry and experienced some pretty huge life events in 2018 alone - all while inspiring her fans, charming humans and animals, and breaking a few rules along the way. Wedding? Check. Pregnancy? In progress. Changing the face of the British royal family forever? Girl, it's been handled.
Meghan has already kicked off 2019 by announcing her royal patronages, hiring a new deputy communications secretary, and making official appearances both solo and with Harry. The couple are also expected to make their widely publicized move to Frogmore Cottage in Windsor soon - before welcoming their first child together in late April - and will be embarking on a royal tour of the US in the Fall. Last year may have been Meghan's introduction to the royal family (as well as the world), but 2019 is when we'll see the Duchess of Sussex rolling up her sleeves and getting down to business. Scroll through to see Meghan's best photos from 2019.
Someone Photoshopped Nicolas Cage's Face on Ross From Friends, and You CAN'T Unsee This
Today is the day that you begin the impossible task of distinguishing Ross Geller from Nicolas Cage. Some evil genius decided to photoshop Cage's face onto David Schwimmer's in a Friends scene, BuzzFeed pointed out after discovering a Reddit thread from spaghetticondom. The result? A Ross Geller that looks exactly like Ross Geller but is actually Nicolas Cage. I hate to break it to you, but they're essentially the same person.
The deed was actually done by YouTube user derpfakes, who has superimposed Cage's face on a bunch of famous characters before - a wild ride of deepfakes worth exploring at a later time. The particular Friends scene is from season four, episode seven ("The One Where Chandler Crosses a Line"), when Ross plays his music for the gang. The YouTuber swapped everyone's faces with Cage's, but the Ross swap is the only one that's causing a meltdown. Watch the video ahead, and prepare to be genuinely perplexed. Looks like a beer thief in the UK isn't the only person with a striking resemblance to Schwimmer.
The Secrets of Queen Elizabeth II's Famous Red Box
There are a few images that are indelibly associated with the British monarchy and with Queen Elizabeth herself: the famous royal crowns, the guards at Buckingham Palace, the queen's seemingly inexhaustible supply of handbags, and, of course, her corgis. Another image that is deeply associated with the monarchy is the famous "red box," a briefcase-style box covered in red leather that is used to convey daily dispatches from the government to the monarch. Like many elements of the monarchy, some information about the use and history of these boxes is available, though not everything.
Red boxes for governmental papers are nothing new. In fact, the tradition of using wooden boxes, covered in red leather, for government dispatches dates back to the 1860s. The red boxes weren't just used to send information to the monarchs, though: several government ministers would traditionally receive and carry the boxes for sensitive papers and important information. According to the Daily Mail, however, an initiative began in 2015 to replace the red boxes and hard copies of papers with digital copies and smartphones.
The Queen, however, still receives her daily red box, having one delivered every single day except for her two official days off: Christmas Day and Easter Sunday. These boxes contain important documents from her Cabinet and from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office for the queen to review in her role as head of state. While some of the documents contained in the boxes require her immediate attention or even her formal signature to move forward, others are simply information so that the monarch can stay aware of the proceedings in the government or be well-briefed prior to important meetings.
The details on who, specifically, prepares the Queen's red boxes are not quite as clear to the members of the public. Her private office, as well as representatives from government departments, handle the documents' selection, arrangement, and delivery to the queen's desk. On the semi-fictional series The Crown, for instance, King George VI instructs a young Elizabeth that she should open the box, flip it upside down, and then work from the bottom up, claiming that the boxes' preparers "hide" the information they don't want the monarch to see by burying it at the bottom. While it's a witty story, no one knows if the anecdote is actually true - although Queen Elizabeth did, certainly, learn a lot about the daily life of being a monarch by shadowing her father.
Red boxes, in their current iteration, have only been around for about 150 years. However, the tradition of sending a "despatch box" of some kind actually dates back to Queen Elizabeth I, according to the box manufacturers Barrow, Hepburn & Gale. The company also features some history on the reason for the red color of the box, offering two plausible explanations (confirmation of the true origin of the color has been lost to history).
"There are two possible reasons why the Despatch Box became the iconic red color. The widely-accepted reason relates to Prince Albert, Consort to Queen Victoria, who is said to have preferred the color as it was used prominently in the arms of his family, the Saxe-Coburg-Gotha. However, there is a school of thought with origins dating back to the late 16th century, when Queen Elizabeth I's representative Francis Throckmorton presented the Spanish Ambassador, Bernardino de Mendoza, with a specially constructed red briefcase filled with black puddings. It was seen as an official communication from The Queen, and so the color red became the official color of the state."
Regardless of how the boxes came to be, they've become one of the most visible symbols of the monarchy and of the relationship between the monarch and the government.
Dwayne Johnson Reveals He Was Actually the "First Choice" to Host This Year's Oscars
Even though Kevin Hart was originally set to host this year's Oscars, it turns out Dwayne Johnson was actually the Academy's "first choice." After a Twitter fan suggested that the 46-year-old actor would be "a great host," Johnson replied with the revelation on Wednesday. "I was their first choice to host this year, and my goal was to make it the most fun and entertaining Oscars ever," he explained. "We all tried hard, but couldn't make it work since I'm shooting Jumanji."
Ah mahalo dude, I was their first choice to host this year, and my goal was to make it the most fun and entertaining Oscars ever. We all tried hard, but couldn't make it work since I'm shooting Jumanji. Academy and I were super bummed but maybe one day down the road 🥃 https://t.co/eiiMuBNOzb
- Dwayne Johnson (@TheRock) February 6, 2019
Johnson and Hart have developed quite the bromance over the years, and even though he hasn't publicly addressed Hart's controversy, it's worth noting that Hart is also starring in the Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle Sequel, which began filming earlier this week. Perhaps Hart just had an opening in his shooting schedule?
Regardless, the Academy Awards will be moving forward without a host on Feb. 24 after Hart stepped down. Following the announcement that Hart was confirmed to host, several of his controversial tweets - which included antigay slurs and homophobic insults - resurfaced online. The Academy asked him to either apologize or step down, and Hart chose the latter. This is the first time in almost 30 years that the ceremony has gone hostless (the ceremony didn't have a host from 1969 to 1971 and in 1989), but we would have loved to have Johnson host. Maybe next year?
Netflix Removed Joe's Voiceover From You, and I've Never Seen Anything So Awkward in My Life
One of the key signatures of Netflix's You, other than all that cyberstalking and murder, is Joe Goldberg's omnipresent voiceovers. The character, played by Penn Badgley - who would still like to make it crystal clear that Joe is NOT hot, OK?! - narrates much of the show the same way he does in Caroline Kepnes's book, upon which the drama is based.
The device works as an interesting way into the psyche of a crazed but outwardly charming killer who doesn't view any of his actions as particularly insane. For instance, as he watches the target of his next obsession, Beck (Elizabeth Lail), wander through the shelves of the bookstore where he works in the very first episode, we get a taste of what's to come from Joe:
"Who are you? Based on your vibe, a student. Your blouse is loose. You're not here to be ogled, but those bracelets, they jangle. You like a little attention. OK, I bite . . . you're not the standard, insecure nymph hunting for Faulkner you'll never finish. Too sun-kissed for Stephen King. Who will you buy?"
His inner monologue only gets creepier from there, serving to shape the series from his point of view. But what you might not realize as you make your way through the show is that without Joe's near-constant, scathing observations about Beck, Peach Salinger, and the rest of the city, You actually ends up being very awkward. To prove this, Netflix went ahead and removed Joe's voiceovers from a few scenes and compiled them into one cringe-worthy highlight reel that made my soul curl up and die from secondhand embarrassment.
.@YouNetflix is kinda awkward when you remove Joe's voiceover pic.twitter.com/QNPstTFAaw
- Netflix US (@netflix) February 4, 2019
Like that "eight-second" scene wasn't already awkward, right? I never thought I'd say this, but I'm now so, so thankful for Joe's nightmare stream of consciousness. Fingers crossed it brings us all more witty (and murderous) gems in season two.
12 Iconic American Idol Auditions That Still Send Shivers Down Our Spines
American Idol has had more ups and downs than Simon Cowell has fitted t-shirts. From its days as the defining piece of pop culture in the mid 2000s to its decline as the age of reality TV passed to its revival on a new network, Idol's signature component remains the same. We're talking about the auditions: that sometimes incredible, sometimes painful cross-country tour where amateur singers have only a few moments to prove that they deserve a chance in the spotlight.
While Idol has never shied away from showing the hilariously awkward (and downright awful) auditions, it's also given us previews of some of the biggest and best voices in music. Before the show returns this Spring with its latest set of hopefuls, we're taking a look back at some of the most brilliant and memorable auditions from season past. Keep reading to see if your favorite made the cut!
16 Black Cosplay Queens Who Will Give You Inspiration For Comic-Con and Beyond
The best part of being in any fandom is seeing how your favorite books, movies, and TV shows spark the creativity of the fans that love them. There are some truly creative souls out there who can take inspiration from anything and put their own unique spin on it to show their appreciation of it. I love seeing cosplayers put their creative skills to use by crafting their own versions of iconic costumes - whether they be a warrior princess, your favorite witches and wizards, or the legendary Toadette. As a black nerd, I especially love seeing cosplayers of color who challenge the idea of who participates in cosplay and what they can do.
It's a popular myth that the "nerdier" aspects of fandom - like cosplaying and LARPing - are male-dominated and reserved for non-black fans. But that's never been true and, in the age of social media, it's been hugely debunked by the large presence of black female fans who finally get a chance to show off their love for all things nerd and cosplay to the world wide web. Now, I'm not personally a cosplayer (there is not a creative bone in my body, sorry not sorry), but I am more than happy to share these 16 cosplay queens everyone should be following on Instagram.
5 Reasons We're Betting on Cassie to Win Bachelor Colton's Heart
Amid all of the drama that went down in this week's episode of The Bachelor, there was one connection that went majorly right. Colton and Cassie's relationship is definitely taking a few steps forward, which has fans wondering if the California-based speech pathologist is going to be the winner of this season (and of Colton's heart).
Cassie hadn't received a ton of screen time before this week, but that doesn't mean she and Colton haven't hit it off. And during their one-on-one date, the chemistry was undeniable, cementing Cassie as one to watch this season. Colton couldn't keep his hands or his eyes off Cassie, and she seemed to feel the same way, too. It looks like the fortune teller's comment in Singapore about them having been brother and sister in a past life didn't put a damper on the romantic feelings between them!
Here are some of the clues that Cassie, who is also on another reality show, might be getting that final rose. Fans are still a ways away from finding out who won Colton over in the end. But Cassie is definitely one contestant worth keeping an eye on - especially after their super romantic date in Thailand on this week's Bachelor episode.

There's a Period Emoji Coming, So I Guess That's a Step in the Right Direction
It's announced! We're super excited to let you know that we're finally getting a #PeriodEmoji!
It is coming to keyboards from March 2019🎉
Find out more here▶https://t.co/dKd4WwEShX pic.twitter.com/vz2FrJw3Gk- PlanInternational UK (@PlanUK) February 6, 2019
All of the emoji you normally use to indicate that you're on your cycle can go back to their original uses now, because thanks to a campaign led by Plan International UK, we're finally getting the period emoji that we all bloody deserve (sorry). Plan International UK is a girls' rights organization that's spent the last few years attempting to get the emoji added to keyboards as a way to destigmatize periods, and make it an easier topic for women to talk to their peers about.
"The fact so many women in this country still find it difficult to talk to work colleagues, friends, and family about their period shows that it remains a taboo subject and something women feel ashamed to discuss," Girls' Rights Campaign Manager Lucy Russell said when the push began in 2017. "We know that these taboos can have a damaging impact on the lives of girls around the world. Many missing school because they face bullying or unfair treatment, or experiencing infections due to a lack of menstrual hygiene education and products."
Russell continued, "Women have told us that by having an emoji, it will make it easier for them to talk about periods with others and so that's why we're addressing the need and creating something that everyone can use. Hopefully this will go some way towards breaking down the stigma surrounding periods once and for all." Unicode officially confirmed in February that the character, a red drop of blood, will be released with the newest batch of emoji coming soon.
