If Russian Doll's Ending Left You Scratching Your Head, Here's What It All Means
Warning: massive spoilers for Russian Doll ahead. Proceed with caution.
If you dedicated part of your weekend to Netflix's new series Russian Doll - it's not very long, FYI - a few things might be true. For starters, there's a strong chance you fell in love with the show's kooky world, swooned over the lioness that is Natasha Lyonne, and rocked out to that sizzling soundtrack, which, yes, included that one song that is permanently seared into your memory. But another, maybe more secondary, thing that might also be true is this: you might be confused by the ending.
That's the real conundrum of the series: the deeper you go, the stranger and more enigmatic it gets. The series makes rules and bends them, and the entire universe slowly begins to unravel as our fair heroes try to figure out what, exactly, is going on. Never fear, dear reader! I'm here to give you a pretty standard, bare-bones rundown of what happens and what, at its simplest level, it means.
The Basic Premise
Before we really get our hands dirty, let's talk about this world. Russian Doll gives us an NYC that's laden with magical realism. For some reason, Nadia is unable to escape her 36th birthday party. Not too far into the first episode, she gets hit by a taxi while trying to chase down her missing bodega cat, Oatmeal. That's when she regains consciousness right back where she started: in the bathroom at her 36th birthday party. No matter how far Nadia gets (sometimes she survives the night and even the following day) and no matter how many times she dies, she always lands back in that spot.
It's worth noting, perhaps at this point, that this isn't quite the same magic that seems to run similar stories, like Groundhog Day and Happy Death Day. Time is a strange thing in this world; Russian Doll presents a space in which everything hurtles onward, even as it loops back to the same moment. Fruit seems to rot, and even the people around them don't have the same robotic response every single loop. Everything is constantly changing. Nadia also posits, at one point, that perhaps there are infinite timelines and infinite iterations of Nadia. In one dimension, Ruth accidentally kills Nadia, and as far as we know, that Ruth is still mourning that Nadia.
The First Twist
The first major shift comes at the end of episode three. At this point, Nadia has launched a full-scale investigation to get to the bottom of the mystery: why can't she die? And why is she stuck reliving her 36th birthday party? She ends up in an elevator that, you guessed it, plummets to the ground and winds up a ravaged pile of twisted metal. But beside her is another person who seems eerily calm at the prospect of death: Alan.
It turns out Alan is also stuck in a time loop that forces him to relive the same day. Instead of a 36th birthday party, though, Alan must repeatedly endure a devastating breakup with his girlfriend, Beatrice, whom he is planning to propose to, ring and all.
The Tenuous Connection
Alan and Nadia quickly realize that their fates are linked: they always die at the exact same time. As we hurtle through the middle, we realize they share another connection. Both of them have deep-seated, debilitating trauma that they can't seem to process. Alan's is a little more front and center, with a slight catch. Yes, his breakup is the searing event at the heart of his meltdown, but it all snowballs into his OCD and his unwillingness to seek professional help. Beatrice can't take care of Alan anymore, and she's worried he'll hurt himself if she leaves. The former makes their relationship feel like work; the latter makes the breakup that much harder.
In Nadia's case, we learn that her trauma is much more buried. She still hasn't forgiven herself for an impossible decision she made in her childhood: leaving her unfit mother to live with a guardian. Her mother's untimely death, at age 36, suddenly casts a whole new sense of realization on the earlier parts of the story.
In order to break the loop, both Nadia and Alan must reckon with their respective pasts. And it's not just a move to help them heal; the universe itself has begun to crumble under the weight of this strange time conundrum. Much like the rotting fruit, other things seem amiss: people and objects are vanishing. It's all becoming unstable. And so the two heroes must reckon with their traumas so they can heal and restore order. Alan must forgive Beatrice for cheating on him and leaving him and must seek help for the unstable parts of his life. Nadia must let her mother go and forgive her younger self for making a decision no child should have to make. And they both do! This, of course, sets up the finale episode . . . and one final twist.
The Last Twist
Having confronted their respective traumas, Nadia and Alan decide to die one more time and meet at the bodega that started it all. This causes a schism in this strange world: their timelines split, leaving each to deal with an older, more oblivious version of the other. Nadia must stop a devastated, wasted Alan from throwing himself off the roof of a building, while Alan must stop a repressed, self-destructive Nadia from relying on her usual unhealthy tendencies. It's almost like a final test: after all, they can't both know all the answers and stride confidently into this new world! They have to prove they've changed, and learned.
And they do. Nadia convinces Alan not to take his life; she doesn't offer happiness or answers, but she does offer company. Alan, on the other hand, makes Nadia realize she's making unhealthy decisions and effectively snaps her out of her trance. He also literally saves her life by pulling her out of the way of the taxi. Once each "enlightened" version of the character leads their needful counterpart out of the darkness, the paths merge into a brilliant, celebratory march toward a single future . . . with a cheering group of costumed homeless people, of course.
At the end of the day, a show like this that's so riddled with mythology and possibility can be read a multitude of ways, which is a nice touch given the multiverse it seems to depict in the first place. I think what resounded with me the most were the function and effects of trauma. I do often find myself reliving the worst moments in my life, despite the fact that the people involved have long moved on. The fact that Nadia and Alan relive their horrific nights over and over seems to speak to that experience of dwelling in the past and in those moments of pain and loss. And it's only by processing, acknowledging, and releasing yourself from that pain that you can truly move forward.
Ariana Grande's New Music Video Has a Major Twist at the End, and Fans Are Divided
At first glance, Ariana Grande's video for "Break Up With Your Girlfriend, I'm Bored" seems to be pretty easy to interpret: a girl (Grande) sets her sights on a handsome guy (Riverdale's Charles Melton) who happens to be dating another woman, so she tries to break them up. However, at the end of the music video, Grande swims over to the couple in the pool and - surprise! - goes in for a kiss with the guy's girlfriend instead.
There's actually a lot more to the video than meets the eye. For starters, the girlfriend is styled to look exactly like Grande, from her trademark brown ponytail to her crescent moon tattoo. So, when she goes in for a kiss with her look-alike at the end, some fans have taken that to mean that the Thank U, Next track is actually a self-love anthem, in which Grande is telling herself to break up with a guy and value herself, instead.
However, the kiss at the end, which actually gets cut off right before the pair lock lips, has also been labeled an act of queerbaiting by a number of people on Twitter. While Grande can kiss a woman and be praised for it, gay women who do the same thing can be on the end of ridicule, shame, and other attacks.
So far, Grande has yet to address the criticisms of her video's twist. But since this isn't her first time weathering controversy, hopefully she will soon. In the meantime, check out some of the best responses to the moment from fans on Twitter ahead.
Apparently Leonardo DiCaprio Hated This Iconic Line From Titanic, and I Don't Blame Him
One of the best things about the never-ending fascination with Titanic is that a new behind-the-scenes fact seems to come out about the 1997 film every year. From discovering that Matthew McConaughey was originally supposed to play Jack instead of Leonardo DiCaprio, to the fact Celine Dion's iconic "My Heart Will Go On" almost never happened, it seems there's no shortage of fun facts still waiting to be revealed. And now, we have another one to add to our list: apparently DiCaprio hated one of the film's most iconic lines.
While sitting down with BBC's Movies That Made Me series, director James Cameron got on the subject of Jack's famous scene at the bow of the ship with his friend Fabrizio (Danny Nucci), where he shouts, "I'm the king of the world!"
"It was made up on the spot. I was in a crane basket, and we were losing the light. I had tried this and we had tried that, tried this line and that line and it was just coming up snake eyes," Cameron explains. "And I said, 'Alright, I've got one for you. Just say, 'I'm the king of the world,' and just spread your arms out wide and just be in the moment and just love it and just celebrate it and love it.' And he goes, 'What?'"
DiCaprio, understandably, wasn't exactly thrilled about the line. It's incredibly cheesy, but something about it works coming out of DiCaprio's mouth, which Cameron anticipated. "I'm getting this over the walkie talkie. 'I'm the king of the world,' just say, 'I'm the king of the world,' but you've got to sell it!'" Cameron adds. "And he goes, 'What?!' I said, 'Just f**king sell it.'"
Despite having to say that line on top of the hazardous, ice-cold conditions of filming that scene - Nucci told Vanity Fair that he and DiCaprio "were trapped on this little tower with our set coats so that we wouldn't freeze" for hours - the actor managed to pull it off. The same can't be said about Cameron, however, who decided to accept his Oscar for the film by infamously shouting the same line on stage. Unsurprisingly, everyone cringed.
Fortunately, Cameron has had time to accept that maybe that line is only acceptable if DiCaprio is saying it. "The way he sells it, yes. Apparently that's the difference between myself and Leonardo, he was able to sell the line," he jokes.
This Russian Doll Fan Had the Ultimate Theory - and the Creators Said He Was RIGHT
Every once in a while, a brilliant TV show comes along that really lends itself to some in-depth interpretations. Sure, there are shows like Game of Thrones that only lend themselves to theories because they're based on unfinished source material and hurtling toward an inevitable conclusion. But in the case of a series like Russian Doll, it's more about the fact that the show doesn't give all the answers, and presents a complex mystery that has more than one solution. This leaves room for all kinds of fun fodder, which was exactly what led to an epic Twitter thread by New York Times comedy columnist Jason Zinoman.
After watching the show, Zinoman posited an incredible, in-depth theory that was supported by details as small as costumes and as big as entire characters. I won't pretend that I can boil it down in any way that will be nearly as coherent as the thread itself. And, in any event, I think the original theory deserves to be read. In short, though, Zinoman argued that the events of Russian Doll could be an allegory for Tompkins Square Park Riot, which saw a historic clash between the NYPD and the "drug pushers, homeless people, and young people known as squatters and punks" that inhabited the park and its surrounding areas.
But here's the twist, because everyone loves a good twist: after Zinoman finished his epic thread, cocreators Leslye Headland and Natasha Lyonne responded to it. And not only that, but they heavily suggested that he hit the nail on the head. In a few follow-up tweets, Vulture writer Kathryn VanArendonk said that Headland had pretty much confirmed it all in a recent interview, and Headland did one final follow-up to note that the show is not about the riots, but the whole affair is close to Lyonne's heart.
But please, allow me to reiterate: you really have to see the thread in all its glory (and the creators' responses) for yourself. It's just upwards of 25 tweets about the brilliant show and the overall themes it embodies. And don't worry, we've tacked the appropriate responses on to the end. Get ready to have your whole mind blown . . . and to get the undeniable urge to watch Russian Doll all over again.
This Is Us Just Filmed a Wedding Scene For Season 3, but WHO Is Getting Married?
Get ready for another wedding ceremony on This Is Us! After Kate and Toby tied the knot last season, it looks like another Pearson family member will be walking down the aisle in season three. On Friday, cast members Chrissy Metz (Kate), Susan Kelechi Watson (Beth), Justin Hartley (Kevin), Sterling K. Brown (Randall), and Mandy Moore (Rebecca) were spotted filming what appears to be a wedding scene, but just which character is getting married?
It's obviously not Kate since she is already married, but it's possible that Randall and Beth are renewing their vows. Maybe after their relationship woes this season, they decide to start fresh. Watson was spotted wearing an off-white gown, after all. Although, the most likely character getting married is probably Kevin. He has gotten pretty close to Zoe throughout this season, and seeing as actress Melanie Liburd isn't pictured on set, they could be trying to save the surprise (and the reveal of her wedding dress) for the actual episode. That could also explain Watson's fancy getup - she's the matron of honor for her cousin! Of course, we're still not sure why Moore is wearing her '90s era Rebecca wig. Wow, we have a lot of theorizing to do.
He's Baaaack! Chucky Gets Loose in the First Creepy Trailer For Child's Play
Chucky appears to be the doll du jour, given all the buzz surrounding the Child's Play reboot and an upcoming TV show based on the murderous toy. But while we're still waiting on more details about the latter, the first creepy trailer for the reboot has arrived.
The film is a contemporary reimagining of the 1988 horror classic, starring Parks and Recreation's Aubrey Plaza as Karen, a single mother who unknowingly gifts her son, Andy (Gabriel Bateman), with a Buddi doll that has a far more sinister nature than anyone realizes. Setting the film in the current day also means that Chucky has a deeply terrifying advantage this time around: there's a WiFi symbol on his box, which leads us to think the internet will play a part in this version of Chucky's possession (on the side of the box, you can even see instructions about connecting Chucky to a tablet, remote, or laptop).
Atlanta's Brian Tyree Henry appears in the film as Detective Norris, and It producers David Katzenberg and Seth Grahame-Smith are also on board. Watch the trailer above before it sneaks into theaters on June 21!
Jordan Peele Ushers Us to a New Dimension in the Spooky Teaser For The Twilight Zone
When CBS announced the brand-new reboot of The Twilight Zone quite some time ago, the network had already attached Jordan Peele as an executive producer. But thanks to the new ad that dropped during the Super Bowl, we've been able to catch a glimpse of the horror auteur in his other role for the series: as the even-keeled host of the show itself, just like the original's Rod Serling. The new teaser is appropriately creepy, setting up the strange multiverse we've come to expect from the mysterious show. Did the Super Bowl really happen, or was it just a figment of our imaginations?! We'll find out when the reboot drops on April 1. In the meantime, you can check out the star-packed cast and scour the teaser for Easter eggs.
Obsessed With Russian Doll? We've Got the Skinny on the Potential Second Season
To kick off February, Netflix unleashed a brand-new original series starring the one and only Natasha Lyonne. (She also executive produced it along with Amy Poehler and Leslye Headland, by the way!) Russian Doll, offers a modern take on 1993's Groundhog Day; our heroine, Nadia, finds herself reliving her 36th birthday over and over again; every time she dies, she regains consciousness at her birthday party in her friend's posh NYC apartment. Russian Doll may not have a unique concept, but the magic in the show lies in the nuanced exploration of its themes, and the way it uses this "nightmarish time loop" device to make a more profound statement about the human experience. Oh, and it's got a killer soundtrack, to boot.
If you burned through all eight episodes in one dizzying go like me, chances are you're dying to know what will happen next. And as luck would have it, a new interview with the creators not only hints at a second season concept, but also a potential third season. "We definitely pitched it as this three-season idea, and yet, it's so interesting to think about how that shapes and morphs in the time since making it," Lyonne told The Hollywood Reporter. "Who knows if we'll be lucky enough to go back down the rabbit hole. That's tomorrow's question. But I think we have some ideas."
That's already pretty promising, right? Of course, Netflix has yet to make any sort of comment about whether or not the show gets a second season, but then again, it's only been out a couple days. We imagine the powers that be will wait a bit longer to see how the viewership adds up. But it's a comfort to know that those who came up with the show are ready to spring into action and tell the next chapter of the story. Which, of course, begs the question: what exactly would we get out of season two? Will we continue to follow the trials and tribulations of Nadia and Alan? Is there a chance they'll accidentally fall into another time loop? Or, will we focus on another pair of kismet strangers?
The creators were a bit more vague when it came to what we could expect from the story. That said, Headland did say their original pitch had Nadia involved in all three seasons as a sort of "beating heart" to the story. "When initially pitched, Nadia was a presence throughout all three of them. But it was not in a very conventional way, if that makes sense," she said. "She was always a presence, as we knew Lyonne would always be the beating heart and soul of this show. Whether she was being haunted or she was haunting the narrative, she would be there." Lyonne echoed the sentiment but offered an alternate path: "I definitely have ideas that range from the really out-there anthology to staying on board with our friend Nadia," she said. "And maybe it's all one idea."
Whether or not the story gets to continue (and with or without Nadia, for that matter), the first season is a triumph in and of itself. So, you know, give it a watch and full into the dark, heartening, and repetitive fairy tale.
It's Clear That Diana Ross's Family Has "Endless Love" For Each Other
Diana Ross is one of the biggest names in music, and her family is just as iconic. The legendary singer is a mom to five children: Evan Ross and Ross Naess, from her previous marriage to the late Arne Naess Jr.; Rhonda Ross Kendrick from her previous relationship with Berry Gordy; and Tracee Ellis Ross and Chudney Ross, from her previous marriage to music executive Robert Ellis Silberstein. Aside from hitting the red carpet with her children, Diana has been known to make appearances with her multiple grandchildren from time to time, including at the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade last year. Just like her hit song, it's clear this clan has nothing but "endless love" for one another.

All I'm Saying Is That Priyanka Chopra's Wax Figure Could Be Her Evil Twin
If Priyanka Chopra ever needs a stand-in on the set, or maybe a decoy to take her place during dinner with husband Nick Jonas, she should definitely employ this eerily spot-on wax figure. On Wednesday, the newly married Isn't It Romantic actress helped unveil her official wax figure at Madame Tussauds in NYC. Clad in a glamorous red gown and diamond jewelry, the statue is also striking a sultry pose, which Priyanka copied for photographers. Priyanka should consider herself pretty lucky, as not all celebrities have such stunningly similar wax figures to show off.
Before meeting her mirror image this week, Priyanka stopped by The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and revealed the couple nickname she wants to go with: "Prick." OK, sure, let's do it! Keep reading to see photos of Priyanka and her evil doppelgänger wax figure.
Ariana Grande's Thank U, Next Has a Host of Samples and Stars Who Helped Make It Happen
Six months after the release of her fourth album, Sweetener, Ariana Grande decided to shirk the standard wait time between musical projects and dropped her follow-up - the featureless 12-song album Thank U, Next.
While Sweetener was the epitome of finding the light after the darkness, Thank U, Next is a very different approach for Grande. With help from a team of producers and writers that include tour-mate Victoria Monét, the album combines the singer's vocals with several perfectly selected samples from artists like *NSYNC and classic musicals like The Sound of Music to produce a roller coaster of emotional jams that are heartbreakingly relatable. While she may be the only lead vocal on each track, Grande's team (who range from frequent collaborators like Max Martin and Ilya Salmanzadeh to the budding star that is her grandmother Marjorie Grande) has perfectly engineered each song to convey an overall theme of trying to handle heartache and that difficult journey.
Grande hinted at the album's direction in an interview with Billboard last year. She explained that the underlying sadness in the album stems from the hardships she faced during 2018 (her breakup with Pete Davidson and the death of her ex-boyfriend Mac Miller). Grande said Thank U, Next is "not particularly uplifting" and that "a lot of it sounds really upbeat, but it's actually a super sad chapter."
Though the album is arguably one of her most cohesive and mature-sounding, there's something undeniably sorrowful about it. Even with playful jams like the title track, "7 Rings," and the recently released "Break Up With Your Girlfriend, I'm Bored," the quieter ballads like "Imagine" and "Ghostin" reveal how very forlorn the entire project is. Considering the album was majorly written in one week following the dissolution of her engagement and weeks after Miller's death, it's not a surprise.
However, the overall melancholy tone of the album doesn't take away its brilliance as a package or when studying each track individually. Thank U, Next tells the story of a woman who's been through terrible tragedies and is baring all the messiness that comes with it. She's distraught and all over the place, but she's doing it with a flair that you can't deny or be mad about.
Join me for a track-by-track guide to whose music was sampled and which stars helped Grande create what may definitely be her best album - so far.
What You Didn't Know About Prince Charles and Camilla's Wedding
Image Source: Getty / Hugo Burnand / Pool
Although Prince Charles and his wife, Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, are cornerstones of the royal family these days, if you know your royal history, you know that wasn't always the case. Camilla was Charles's first love, and when his marriage to Diana, Princess of Wales, failed, she was his mistress. Despite the backlash from the British public and even from within the royal family, Charles and Camilla wed in 2005 - the second marriage for both of them. Here are just some of the facts you might not know about the future king and queen's big day.
- They had two ceremonies instead of just one. Because Charles and Camilla were both divorced (and Camilla's ex-husband, Andrew Parker Bowles, was still living), they were in an awkward position, given that the Church of England tends to frown upon divorce and remarriage. Instead of pushing for a full church service, Charles and Camilla instead chose to have a two-part wedding day. They began with a civil marriage ceremony, followed by a religious blessing.
- The queen did not attend - for religious reasons. As the head of the Church of England, the queen chose not to attend the civil marriage ceremony between the couple, whose previous marriages were at odds with church teaching. She did, however, attend the subsequent blessing and spoke briefly at the reception.
- The chapel they used has some serious royal history. For their marital blessing after the civil marriage ceremony, Charles and Camilla, along with their families and guests, went to St. George's Chapel in Windsor. The chapel has been the site of many royal weddings over the years, including the future King Edward VII and his wife, Alexandra. In the modern era, St. George's was the venue of choice for the wedding of Prince Edward and Sophie, Countess of Wessex, as well as Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank, Peter Phillips and Autumn Kelly, and, of course, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

- Camilla was sick at her wedding. In the week leading up to the April wedding, Camilla was suffering from sinusitis. Her ongoing illness, along with the obvious stress and anxiety over the ceremonies and public perception, had several of her friends worried that she might not actually be able to go through with the wedding plans. Even up to and on the day of the wedding, her nerves were so stressed that it took several friends to help her get out of bed and get going.
- Not everyone was thrilled about the royal wedding. Camilla's history with the British public had been fraught for many years, due to the fact that she was widely perceived as the "other woman" who had broken up Charles's marriage with Diana (in reality, most reports are that they resumed their romance only after Charles and Diana's marriage had fallen apart). So it's no surprise - even if it is a bit sad - that the couple's appearance was greeted with a few audible boos. Despite this, the vast majority of crowds who turned out were well-wishers.
- Charles was already connected to Camilla's family. Although Charles became the stepfather to Camilla's two children when they married, he already had a relationship with her son. When Camilla had her son, Tom Parker Bowles, in 1974, she asked Charles to be his godfather.
- Camilla's title was complicated the moment she said "I do." Technically speaking, Camilla became the Princess of Wales upon marrying Charles, but she chose to go by his secondary title (that of the Duchy of Cornwall) in deference to a public that still associated the Wales title with Diana. The official word is that she may choose to go by "Princess Consort" when Charles becomes king, for similar reasons, but in common law and in practice, she will be queen consort.
- There was a floral snafu because of the pope. Charles and Camilla's original wedding date of April 8 was pushed back a day so Charles could attend the funeral of Pope John Paul II as the representative of the royal family. Because of this last-minute change, the florists scurried to keep the arrangements "fresh and perfect" for an extra day.

A Meerkat Can Eat a Roach Named After Your Ex For Valentine's Day, So, That's 1 Option
Image Source: Getty / Matt Cardy
The El Paso Zoo will help you be petty this Valentine's Day. A week before the holiday, the zoo shared a flyer stating it would name cockroaches after people's exes, then feed said cockroaches to their meerkats. "What's the perfect Valentine's Day gift? Naming a cockroach after your ex, of course!" the zoo wrote on Facebook. It's . . . poetic, quite frankly.
Following the overwhelming response - the original post now has over 5,000 shares - the El Paso Zoo has decided to extend the offer to other animals, like a cotton-top tamarin, golden lion tamarin, and white-headed marmoset. To participate in the stunning display of "no, in fact I'm not over it yet, Janet!," simply message the El Paso Zoo with your ex's name on Facebook and tune into the feeding on Facebook Live or the meerkat webcam on Valentine's Day at 2:15 p.m. MT.

7 Signs You're in Love With a Liar
My ex-fiancé was a Navy Seal who sometimes worked with the CIA. He met his first wife when he rescued her when she was kidnapped in Iran. He had been held hostage in China. He often took off for far-flung locations, on "secret missions" that he would tell me about when there was "a secure line." Whenever I questioned him about anything - which was often - he went on the offense, attacking my integrity and my inability to trust.
"You interrogate!" he'd bark. "You can't have a relationship without trust."
He was right. You can't. And after a year of beating myself up for being suspicious and cynical, I broke up with him. I couldn't live without knowing what was real and what wasn't. Still, for almost a year and a half, I blamed myself for ruining the best thing that had ever happened to me
I got over that when he was convicted of writing fraudulent prescriptions for Vicodin, among other drugs. My name - along with family members, ex-colleagues, and fictitious people - was among the names he falsified.
I can't tell you how elated I felt when he was sentenced to two years in jail. I'd been right all along! He was a liar!
Still, the question on everyone's mind - including my own - was whether there had been signs, and if I'd missed them.
And the answer is yes.
A large part of the reason I wasn't sure what was going on was because he mixed fact with fiction. He'd never been a Navy Seal, didn't work for the CIA, had never been held hostage in China. His ex-wife had never set foot in Iran. (I also didn't know about the wife before her - or that he was engaged to another woman when he was engaged to me.)
On the other hand, he really was a doctor, was in the Navy, did work in the Pentagon, and was opening up a hospital for kids with cancer in Iraq and Afghanistan.
There was also this: we all see what we want to see, and we believe what we want to see - especially in love. (Hence the phrase "blinded by love.")
Most of us don't live our lives anticipating exploitation. Even when there's actual evidence to the contrary, we give the other person the benefit of the doubt. We're wired to believe that people are inherently good, primarily because society couldn't function without that default. If we all operated in isolation, we would achieve very little, as individuals and as a species.
Trust is de rigueur in society. Likewise in intimate relationships. It makes sense: If we don't trust, we might not have sex. If we don't have sex, the species doesn't continue. And then where would we be?
Finally, the sad reality is that our talent for detecting deception with anyone - friend, foe, lover, family member, or stranger - is no better than a roll of the dice. In fact, the closer you are to someone, the more likely you are to believe them, because your blinders are in place and securely fastened. And unlike Pinocchio, there's no quickly growing protuberance to indicate we're lying.
Still, there are some ways to tell if you're being manipulated and lied to, which I learned when I was researching my book Duped: Double Lives, False Identities, and the Con Man I Almost Married.
1. They're charming.
Dutch researcher Aldert Vrij compiled a list of 18 characteristics common among good liars. Good liars are manipulative, confident, eloquent, quick-witted, able to balance guilt and fear, and - yes - hot. The better looking you are, the more you can get away with.
Yes. We're a shallow bunch.
2. You can't verify anything they say.
You ask to see photos or receipts, you want to meet their friends and family, but something always gets in the way and it never materializes. Although they promise you will, something always gets in the way. You know why? Because they're lying!
3. They go on the offense when you question them.
For years, Lance Armstrong was accused of doping. And any time someone challenged him, there was something wrong with them, not him. Ditto for Richard Nixon, Donald Trump, Bill Clinton, Bill O'Reilly, and Harvey Weinstein, all of whom, when faced with clear evidence that they were misbehaving, went after their accusers. They tell us the sky is purple and make us think there's something wrong with us for believing it's blue. When we dare to challenge them, we're the ones with the problem.
4. They're really good storytellers.
In an experiment, Stanford communications professor Jeff Hancock and his research team paid people to write fake reviews of a hotel in New York. Some of the reviewers had really stayed there; others had never set foot in the place.
The liars, they found, focused on narrative. "They make up a story: Who? And what happened? And that's what happened here," Hancock said in a 2012 Ted Talk. "Our fake reviewers talked about who they were with and what they were doing. They also used the first-person singular, 'I,' way more than the people that actually stayed there. They were inserting themselves into the hotel review, kind of trying to convince you they were there."
Those who really had been at the hotel were more concerned with "spatial information": the size of the bathroom, or how close the hotel was from a shopping center.
What Hancock deduced is that our language changes based on the type of lie we're emitting and our motivations for telling it. When being questioned in person, for example, liars in Hancock's study tended to use fewer first-person singular words, even though they opted for first-person singular more often in their fake reviews.
"Our argument is that it depends on what the liar is trying to accomplish, motivation, and how that affects them psychologically," Hancock told me. "The fake reviewer is inserting the self into their story to make it sound more credible, while the liars in the interview may be distancing themselves from the event in question. This has different effects on first-person singular."
5. They use phrases like "Not that I can remember" or "To the best of my knowledge."
If someone is "swearing to god" emphatically, parroting your words, or telling you what a good question you're asking, that usually means they're stalling for time to come up with an acceptable response. They could also be trying to throw you off their scent, distract you, or curry favor by padding your ego.
That's because nonanswer statements give someone time to formulate a better answer or to search for wiggle room to squirm their way out of the question. "People don't realize the distinction between 'I wouldn't do something' versus 'I didn't do something,'" said Phil Houston, coauthor of Spy the Lie. "It creates a real epiphany for them."
6. They use qualifying words.
"Basically," "frankly," "honestly," "fundamentally," "usually," and, of course, "believe me" - Donald Trump's favorite - are red flags. So are qualifying statements like "Trust me," "I'm a good person," and "I'm an honest person."
According to Houston, what you really want to look for are clusters of actions. On its own, for example, rubbing your eye means nothing; a speck of dust could have camped there. But combine that with crossing and uncrossing your arms, rolling your eyes to the heavens above, clearing your throat, shielding your mouth or eyes, adjusting your clothes or hair, inspecting your nails, or saying the word "yes" while shaking your head "no," and there's a pretty good chance someone's not telling the truth. But the clusters must occur in the first five seconds of your interaction, when the liar in question hasn't yet had time to prepare false statements.
Now, none of this is easy. That's why liars get one over on so many of us. You have to look and listen at the same time, and most of us have difficulty doing either one of these things well.
Even experts have a hard time. In a meta-analysis of over 200 studies, psychologist Charles F. Bond and lying researcher Bella DePaulo concluded that people could only spot a liar 47 percent of the time. Experienced job interviewers didn't fare any better (52 percent) when trying to distinguish between candidates who lied about their career histories and those who didn't.
Which brings us to number seven.
7. Whenever possible, get hard evidence.
The only reliable way to detect deception is to have tangible proof: Texts. Emails. Phone records. Bank accounts. Video footage. Your own eyeballs.
Let's imagine that the leader of a major first-world power proclaims that more people showed up to his inauguration than to any other inauguration in the history of presidential elections. If there weren't actual statistics proving otherwise, he could go unchallenged. And even so, he still might launch a full-frontal attack. (See number three, above!) But at least you'll have the goods.

This Bride Traveled the Globe in Her Wedding Dress and Took the Dreamiest Photos Along the Way
While some brides may spend days weeks agonizing over what to pack for their honeymoon, Zoe Aust likely didn't have too much trouble prepping for her postwedding getaway - because she planned to spend most of it in her wedding dress. Zoe, who runs the Instagram account @MarryMeInTravel with her husband, Nick, rewore her white wedding gown in 33 different countries during a yearlong honeymoon. Talk about getting bang for your buck!
After exchanging "I dos" on Dec. 31, 2017, Nick and Zoe left behind their jobs in the United States to embark on a journey around the globe, making pit stops everywhere from Paris to Positano and Sydney to Singapore. In each city, Zoe posed for stunning photos while wearing her beaded Watters gown, often styling it according to her surroundings. She trudged through the snow, rode a bicycle, walked through deserts, and yep, even swam in the dress, making for some seriously breathtaking pictures (and proving that her gown is essentially indestructible).
"Life is too short to only wear your wedding dress once."
While speaking to People magazine about her adventures, Zoe told the publication, "Life is too short to only wear your wedding dress once. And the world is too big to only stay in your little town your whole life. Our hope is that when people see our pictures they feel nothing but inspired to explore a new place, try a new hobby, and fulfill that dream they've always had." Keep reading to admire all the beautiful footage from their yearlong voyage, and you'll most definitely feel overcome with that aforementioned sense of inspiration.

There Are 5 Items Hidden in This Valentine's Day Brain-Teaser - Can You Spot Them All?
I'm a sucker for a good brain-teaser, so I wasn't too shocked at how quickly I managed to get sucked into this tricky picture game that's making the rounds. Designed by the creative minds over at Holiday Cottages - the same company that created an equally challenging Christmas-inspired brain-teaser last year - this new game has a Valentine's Day theme, challenging anyone who's up for it to spot five misplaced items lying around a couple's romantic getaway. The hidden objects include a box of chocolates, a Valentine's Day card, a single rose, a gift box, and an engagement ring.
According to Holiday Cottages, it's taking most people an average of four minutes to spot all of the items, although - and I don't mean to brag here - I was able to pick them all out in less than two. Take a look at the brain-teaser above and then scroll ahead to see the solution if you're truly stumped.

I Canceled My Weekend Plans to Focus on Self-Care, and I Learned So Much
I've struggled with weekend anxiety my entire adult life. The feeling that I should be out doing something: networking, attending industry events, or merely dressing up and hitting the town with my girlfriends because I'm young and that's what you do when you're young. Besides, if I'm not out taking advantage of everything New York City has to offer, why am I spending half of my annual income on an apartment the size of my parents' bedroom?
It's so much more than the FOMO effect (which is still present). I actually feel anxious and guilty if I turn down invitations when I don't have any other plans in the books. The problem with this fear of saying no is it completely wears me out. The holiday season is always an anxiety-ridden time for me (holiday parties, family commitments, constantly attempting to be available for everything so I don't let anyone down), and I went into January with a completely packed schedule. I was quickly approaching burnout mode when my fiancé suggested (lovingly but sternly) that I take the weekend to do nothing.
Nothing? It was a foreign concept. But he was going out of town for business, and I would have the apartment to myself. So, I decided to cancel all my weekend plans and focus on self-care. Because frankly, I was exhausted.
Step one: put down my damn phone. I vowed to stay off social media for 48 hours and only pick up my phone with intent, like sending a quick text to my partner or mom.
Hanging out by myself every once in a while is rejuvenating. It was freeing to not be on a schedule.
Step two: slow down, breathe, and relax. As one of those millennials who feels like they have 17 million different jobs and projects in the air at all times, I'm constantly reading advice books and columns about how to be more productive, make more money, or become more skilled. This weekend? I read a fiction novel - one that made no mention of Roth IRAs, Instagram growth tips, or how your personality type influences your professional success. It had been sitting on my bedside table, unopened, for about six months.
My weekend breakfast routine typically consists of an egg-white wrap on the go, but this particular morning, I decided to whip out the frying pan and try my hand at breakfast for one. And, no offense to my local deli, but I discovered that I make a mean egg-and-turkey panini. Later I took a yoga class, followed by a long, leisurely walk around my neighborhood (sans phone). I stopped in my local coffee shop, aforementioned novel in tow, and read for almost two hours over a chicory cold brew. That night, I opened my laptop for the first time all weekend to write - not because I was on a deadline, but because I was feeling inspired.
Sunday consisted of another delicious breakfast panini, a crossword puzzle, and a whole lot of R&R. All weekend, I ignored any texts asking where I was or what I was doing. The responses could wait until Monday. It was a glorious two days.
Going into the weekend, I feared that not only would I feel guilty or that I was missing out, but that I would get bored spending 48 hours with me, myself, and I. To my surprise, I was completely misguided. It felt good. In a city like the Big Apple, when minutes disappear in a matter of seconds and so many things are constantly going on around you, I discovered how important it is to slow down, check in with yourself, and take the time to focus on doing the little things that refill your well. I'm an extrovert, yes, but I realized that hanging out by myself every once in a while is rejuvenating. It was freeing to not be on a schedule. My to-do list consisted of one singular task: to relax. Come Monday, I felt rested and ready to take on the world again.
I think I'll do this more often.

This Is Exactly Who You Should Invite to a Bridal Shower
I'm the matron of honor in my sister's upcoming wedding, which means I'm responsible for planning her bridal shower. I've been a guest at many other showers, but never did I put too much thought into how potentially tricky the invite list can be. And since I began planning, friends have shared horror stories about offending people who either were or weren't invited to a bridal shower. For instance, a bride's mom included a bunch of guests who ultimately weren't invited to the wedding. That's a "no no," according to, well, common sense, but also rules of etiquette. In another bridal shower gone wrong tale, the groom's mom held a shower and forgot to invite the bride's mom. Oops.
Certain dos and don'ts of putting together a bridal shower invite list are black and white, but there are some gray areas, too. Like, should you invite out-of-town friends and family? If you know they won't be able to make the trip, due to either budget constraints or work or family commitments, they may end up feeling pressured to send a gift. While there are no hard and fast rules here, what I've found is that simply asking my aunt or a friend of my sister's who lives across the country if they think they could make it is the best way to avoid hurting anyone's feelings or bank accounts.
Here are the people you should be sure to invite to a bridal shower:
- Close family members of the bride. This one is pretty obvious. Invite the mother of the bride, sisters, aunts, and female cousins, as long as they live fairly close. Otherwise, as suggested above, you may just want to confirm they are up for making the trip.
- The mother-in-law. Invite the mother of the bride's partner, whether the bride loves her or, um, doesn't.
- Close family members on the bride's partner's side. Their partner's sisters, aunts, and female cousins should be on your invite list.
- The mother of the bride's friends. If the mother of the bride has a few friends she wants to include, that's pretty standard. Plus, they'll probably be great gift givers!
- Close friends of the mother-in-law. If she wants to include certain people, definitely be open to that, too. Just make sure both her and the mother of the bride's lists aren't too out of control.
- The bridal party. This one's a given. Also, ask the bride if she wants any kids who are in her wedding party to attend, like a junior bridesmaid or flower girl. It should be up to her if the shower will include children.
- Friends and coworkers of the bride. When it comes to coworkers and friends who aren't super close to the bride, it's always best to check with her to see who she's comfortable with inviting.
- The bride's partner - maybe. Ask the bride if she wants her partner to attend the shower. Many brides like for their main squeeze to show up at the end of the shower for a kiss and introductions.
- Is it a coed shower? If the bride has any close friends of the opposite sex, ask if they should be included on the special day. Having a couple's shower is a big trend, too, so perhaps you want to go that route.
In the end, how many people you can afford to host for the shower may play a role as well in formulating the invite list. Just make sure you and the bride are on the same page.
LOL, Pet Owners Shared All the Ridiculous Nicknames They Give Their Pets
