Reading a Book by a Nigerian Author Changed My Life - Here Are 6 Others That Might Change Yours

The first time I picked up a book by a Nigerian author, I was in college, sifting through my understanding of what it meant to be black. The book was Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, and it's safe to say it changed my life.

The main character, Ifemelu, is forced to contend with her own blackness for the first time when she moves to America - a process that is foreign to someone whose race is thrust upon them the moment they enter the world. Before Adichie, I was well-versed in the imaginings of blackness through the American lens - both black and white. I understood the deafening cloud of oppression and the persistent struggle that weaves its way through every narrative. I understood that blackness, even when unmentioned, always lurked quietly in the background - easily called up when a new character crossed the page.

Americanah is different. Ifemelu is black but not in the way the American characters in the book are; not in the way that I am. Her blackness is more solid somehow, unburdened by quarter-white 23andMe test results and a torrid history that is danced around delicately. She looks at black American culture from a precarious distance and conceptualizes race in a way that is captivating because while she's aware of it, she isn't consumed by it. She learns what it means to be black over the course of the novel - because race isn't something she is forced to consider before she arrives in America.

It's the perspective I didn't know I needed as a young, queer black girl looking to understand myself.

It made me reexamine my understandings of race and its mere existence as a category. It's the perspective I didn't know I needed as a young, queer black girl looking to understand myself. From there I fell in love with Adichie and Nigerian authors as a whole (seriously, it's all I talk about on the 'gram). And while no two authors are the same, they all share the ability to create bodies of work where blackness isn't prescriptive but descriptive. Their worlds are often filled with black characters who are just living, which taught me that I could just live, too.

Although I have my own personal infatuation with Nigerian authors, they're part of a new generation of young Nigerian artists captivating readers worldwide. In early 2017, The New York Times reported the renaissance taking place on the continent and the ways their works challenge and address age-old taboos and traditions that went previously unaddressed. The result is vibrant and energetic prose - work that delights, haunts, and travels everywhere from the streets of Lagos to small, American towns.

Ahead, I've rounded up the contemporary Nigerian authors you need to read now - and which books to start with.

Prepare Yourself: The Curse of La Llorona Trailer Is 2 Minutes of Pure Fear

Are you ready for an entirely new monster to take over your nightmares? Because the new trailer for The Curse of La Llorona is here to do just that. The upcoming horror film - which is produced by Gary Dauberman, Emile Gladstone, and The Conjuring's James Wan - centers on a social worker (Linda Cardellini) and her two young children, who find themselves drawn into a supernatural fight for their lives when it turns out a horrifying apparition called "La Llorona" (or The Weeping Woman) is very much real. The movie takes place in LA in the '70s, and the two-minute trailer is already more than enough to send our blood pressure into overdrive (that bathtub scene!). Watch it above, if you dare, before it hits theaters on April 19.

Trailer 1:

The Dumbo Trailer Will Make You Tear Up - But What Else Would You Expect?

Disney is in the midst of remaking a ton of our favorite classics and among them is Dumbo, the tale of a baby elephant with ears so big he can fly. While many are unsure whether the classics need to be remade, there's no denying the new trailer for Dumbo looks as cute as it does entertaining. Think The Greatest Showman with less singing and more adorable elephant antics.

The remake is directed by Tim Burton, so promises to be weird and wonderful. The cast includes Colin Farrell, Danny DeVito, Michael Keaton, and Eva Green. This is guaranteed to be entertaining and heartwarming for both those enjoying the story for the first time, and those reliving a familiar tale from childhood. Check out the official trailer now, ahead of the movie's release on March 29.

Teaser:

Priyanka Chopra Gives an Update on When She and Nick Jonas Plan to Start a Family

Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas may have babies on the brain, but they're in no rush to start a family. During the LA premiere of Isn't It Romantic on Monday night, the 36-year-old newlywed opened up about her and her husband's plans to start a family. "We both know that that's something that needs to happen, but it's not something I think about very much," she said. "We're both very driven, we love our work, we're married to our work, and we're both very supportive of each other's work. So I'm sure it will happen in an organic way."

Priyanka previously told People that she and the 26-year-old singer will have kids "when the time is right." Nick expressed similar sentiments on an episode of Spotify podcast The Rewind With Guy Raz, saying, "[In] 10 years, I definitely want to have kids. That is, it's going to happen in the next 10 years. Well, hopefully earlier than that. I'm very fond of children and I want to be able to do that." For now, Nick and Priyanka are still enjoying the honeymoon stage and "getting to know each other."

Insecure's Amanda Seales Reveals How She's Most Like Her Character, Tiffany

When Amanda Seales was first cast as Tiffany on HBO's Insecure, she didn't really relate to the character, who seemed "bougie and vapid." But after spending two seasons with Tiffany, the comedian and actor feels very differently. "We've gotten to see more of her softer side," Seales said. "She's not trying to be nitpicky or judgmental. She really is just calling out the truth to her friends, who really make a concerted effort to ignore the truth and the facts. That's an important role to play in a friend circle." Seales admits that she's actually that friend in her social circle. "People don't tell me nothing until they're ready for the truth," she said.

"I didn't shade you. The facts shaded you."

In addition to her role as truth-teller, Seales wears many other hats: DJ, singer, comedian, actress, and game show host. She also holds a master's degree in African-American studies from Columbia University. We spoke to Seales at POPSUGAR Play/Ground - where she interviewed Tiffany Haddish on stage - about what's next for her and for her character.

As one-half of Insecure's most stable couple, Seales said she hopes that Tiffany and Derek (Wade Allain-Marcus) are in it for the long haul, and that the rumors that Tiffany is cheating on Derek aren't true. "Issa wanted to have a couple on the show that actually is working, that actually is functional," Seales said. "I think that it's important to see a functional couple on television, especially a functional black couple. We'll see in season three what happens, but when I heard those rumors, I was like, 'I hope that's not the case.'"

While many people know Seales from Insecure, she's also the creator and host of a live black-culture game show, aptly named Smart Funny & Black, which brings together all of her talents. "I get to sing, host, use my master's in African-American studies, and do comedy all in one space. This is the realization of a dream."

In August, she took the show on the road with a 10-city Smart Funny & Black tour. "You don't have to be black to come to the show, that's not what it's about," Seales said. "It's about understanding and celebrating black culture and what we've contributed to this world."

For Seales, it's all about truth, knowledge, and comedy, and as far as she's concerned, the three can coexist. Does she ever worry about being misunderstood? "I don't," she said, plain and simple. "You may not like how I'm saying something, but you know what the f*ck I'm saying," she said. "I don't speak no sh*t unless I know. Free speech doesn't mean freedom to talk out your ass without being checked. And I don't talk out my ass. I know what I'm talking about it. I didn't shade you. The facts shaded you."

Why Hailey Baldwin Initially Hesitated to Take Justin Bieber's Last Name

Hailey Baldwin may have officially taken husband Justin Bieber's last name, but it wasn't an easy thing for her to do. "It took some getting used to, for sure," Hailey recently told Bustle. "It's definitely strange, it takes adjusting." The 22-year-old model initially hesitated to drop her famous last name because of its connection to her family. Hailey's dad is actor Stephen Baldwin, the youngest of the four Baldwin brothers following Alec, Daniel, and William. "I'm very proud of my family name," Hailey explained. "I come from a great family with a history in this industry. I remember when I was going to change it, I asked my dad if he was going to be upset and he was like, 'No! I don't care. We love you. All good. Everyone still knows you're a Baldwin.'"

Hailey and Justin secretly tied the knot in an NYC courthouse this past September. "I prayed to feel peace about the decision, and that's where I landed," Hailey recently told Vogue about her decision to marry Justin. "I love him very much. I have loved him for a long time." Of course, she's not the only celebrity newlywed to change her last name - Priyanka Chopra and Miley Cyrus recently did it, too!

A Star Is Born's Sam Elliott Is Handsome Now, But DAMN, Look at These Pics From the '70s

Sam Elliott is one of those actors who seems like he's been around forever and has been in pretty much everything. A veteran character actor, Elliott is a first-time Oscar nominee this year, nominated for best supporting actor for his work on the musical drama A Star Is Born. Elliott has been easily recognizable onscreen for decades, with his slightly grizzled look and often a rather expressive mustache that wouldn't be out of place in a Western film (and has been in plenty of them). But in the early days of his career, in the 1960s and 1970s, Elliott's look was decidedly different. Check out a handful of pictures from Elliott's past below - what do you think?

Cute Alert! Even Prince William Was Impressed by Bradley Cooper's Singing in A Star Is Born

I think I speak for everyone when I say that I was surprised to find out that Bradley Cooper actually sings in A Star Is Born, and apparently, so was Prince William. While attending the BAFTA Awards with Kate Middleton on Sunday, the Duke of Cambridge linked up with Bradley and congratulated him on the success of the film. "Congratulations, it's a great film," William told Bradley, adding, "I didn't know you could sing!"

Bradley also admitted to William that he didn't originally have Lady Gaga in mind to play Ally, but that all changed once he saw her perform. A Star Is Born took home the award for best original music. Even though Lady Gaga wasn't there to celebrate (she was at the Grammys), Bradley made sure to give her sweet shout-out in his acceptance speech. Watch William and Bradley's cute exchange ahead!

The Masked Singer: A Guide to Which Celebrities Have Been Revealed, and Who's Still Left

The Masked Singer might be the most bonkers reality show on TV at the moment, but nevertheless, I can't help but find myself fascinated by the mystery of which thirsty celebrity is lurking behind each of those bizarre, nightmarish masks that look like rejected outfits from the Spy Kids costume department.

Hosted by Nick Cannon, the Fox reality competition series is the US remake of the popular South Korean show King of Mask Singer. It began with 12 singing celebrities, with one being eliminated each week. The catch? Each of the contestants wears head-to-toe costumes, concealing every inch of their identities from not only the audience but also the panelists and other contestants. Panelists Ken Jeong, Jenny McCarthy, Nicole Scherzinger, and Robin Thicke receive small hints about who the singer might be over the course of the show and then try to guess their identities.

Warning: spoilers for The Masked Singer to follow!

So far we've unmasked Alien (singer La Toya Jackson), Hippo (NFL player Antonio Brown), Pineapple (comedian Tommy Chong), Unicorn (Beverly Hills, 90210's Tori Spelling), and a few others. So if you're wondering who's behind the masks of Raven, Lion, Peacock, Monster, and the rest, keep reading!

Here Are the Stars With the Most Oscars - Yes, Meryl Streep Is One of Them

In spite of the flubs and controversies over the years, the Oscars still haven't lost their prestige. Film buffs keep going back to the award show over the years for one thing: the wins. (OK, and maybe suave suits and gorgeous gowns, too.) When it comes to Oscar heavyweights, we bet you're already thinking of the inimitable, mega-talented queen that is Meryl Streep. While the seasoned actress is indeed one of the biggest names in the Academy, she doesn't actually have the most wins. The real champion is still one of the biggest names in the world of film-making. Here's a brief history of Academy Award record holders for your knowledge - as well as trivia ammo that you can drop at your next Oscar viewing party.

Who has the most wins?

In the history of the Oscars, only one person has ever had four Academy Award wins: Katharine Hepburn, the greatest female screen legend according to the American Film Institute. The actress is known for her firebrand and sharp-witted personality, taking on both screwball comedies and rich literary masterpieces over her fruitful career. She won her first Academy Award in the best actress category for her role as a small-town performer in Morning Glory in 1934. She then picked up three more accolades in the same category for her roles in Guess Who's Coming to Dinner (1968), The Lion in Winter (1969), and On Golden Pond (1982). Hepburn was 74 in her final win, making her the second oldest person to earn the Oscar for best actress (Jessica Tandy was the oldest at 80).

Who has the most nominations?

And then there's Meryl Streep, who's as great in a light and frothy role in Mamma Mia (2008) as she is in a heartbreaking one in Silkwood (1983). So what record does Streep hold? The Academy darling has, by far, the most nominations of all time with 21 bids in total, which is 9 more than Hepburn. Streep was last nominated for her role in The Post in 2018, in which she played Katharine Graham, the second female publisher of a major American newspaper. The renowned actress earned her first nomination in 1979 for best supporting actress in The Deer Hunter, then cinched her first win a year later for the same category for the film Kramer vs. Kramer. Her two other wins were for the best actress category in the movies Sophie's Choice (1983) and The Iron Lady (2012).

Though she has the most nominations, Streep isn't the sole actor or actress to win three times. A few others are part of the three-timers club, which is still a relatively exclusive one. They include Walter Brennan, Ingrid Bergman, Jack Nicholson, and Daniel Day-Lewis.

Who has the most nominations without a win (so far)?

There's another actress who also deserves a shout-out here: Glenn Close. She currently holds the record for the most nominations without a win - seven in total, to be precise. This record could very well change come the 2019 Oscars. Close has been nominated this year in the best actress category for her absorbing role in The Wife, for which she's already earned a SAG and Golden Globe so far. If she picks up an Oscar, she'll not only get her first win but also officially reach EGOT status. In any case, Close's iconic talent is undeniable.

At the end of the day, an Oscar is a hunk of bronze with a gild of gold, but the wins do matter. The trophies come from the most prestigious institution in the movie industry, determining who gets recognition and what kind of movies get made. It's exciting then to see that many of the record holders are women with remarkable careers. Now, can we give Glenn Close her darn Oscar already?

I enjoy setting goals for myself. I want to lift more weights, eat fewer French fries and more vegetables, and stop spending money on frivolous things. There's a Toy Story 4 Ice Cream Coming Soon, So Now Would Be a Perfect Time to Panic

The buzz surrounding Toy Story 4's arrival in theaters this year just keeps on building. The movie won't officially be released until June 21, but it looks like there's a Toy Story 4-themed ice cream that you can enjoy while you patiently wait to stampede to the nearest movie theater to watch it. According Candy Hunting, Edy's Ice Cream is gearing up to release two brand new flavors of the ice cream any minute now, so get your spoons ready.

The first of the two flavors is Cinnamon Churro Carnival Combo, which, judging by the photo above, appears to be a mixture of vanilla ice cream, cinnamon swirl, and pieces of actual churros. The second flavor is called Chocolate Peanut Butter Midway Mash-Up, and it looks like it'll be made with a chocolate ice cream base mixed with peanut butter and chocolate chunks.

I don't know about you, but both of these sound pretty dreamy if you ask me. No other details have emerged about when either of the flavors are set to make their way to freezers, but Disney Food Blog recently reported that they both have already been spotted in grocery stores in Pennsylvania. That's probably a really good sign that they'll be available in a store near you sometime soon, so you may want to keep your eyes peeled for them the next time you're in the freezer aisle.

A Little Love Goes a Long Way: Basic French Macarons

This $20 Product Will Stop Your Dog From Tracking Mud Into the House Ever Again

If you have a dog (or an outdoor cat), this scene likely plays out multiple times a day, every day of the year. You take your sweet pooch to play in the park, let them out in the backyard, or walk them around the block, and no matter what the season or what the weather, their paws become filthy. We all have our methods for cleaning said paws - a dry towel by the door, a package of baby wipes, a silent prayer that none of the mud will rub off onto your floors and furniture if you do nothing - but somehow, none ever seem to be truly effective . . . until now.

Enter: the Mudbuster Portable Dog Paw Cleaner, a $20 product that cleans dogs' paws in seconds, no matter where you are.

The portable product comes in three different sizes and has a three-piece setup that includes a canister with a rolled silicone mat inside. You simply add a bit of clean water, slide your furry friend's paw in, twist the Mudbuster so the soft silicone bristles can get all the gunk from between the pads of their paws, remove them squeaky clean, and pat to dry. Repeat the process for the other three paws, and let them run loose in the house without worry of muddy tracks all over.

Genius.

See exactly how the product works in the photos ahead, and grab one (or three) for your doggos.

We Just Found Lady Gaga's Oscars Dress on the Marc Jacobs Runway

Marc Jacobs is New York Fashion's showman - a for-fashion's-sake kind of designer who, for fashion's sake, crafted billowing feathered dresses and caped coats and brought out the iconic Christy Turlington to close out his Fall 2019 runway. Like a palate cleanser between the trends and emphasis on street wear, Marc is all drama in silhouette and in purpose - because what purpose does a feathered cocktail dress or a fascinator serve beyond turning heads? - in a room or on a red carpet. On that note, there are dresses we hope Lady Gaga chooses for the Oscars here (namely a tiered yellow taffeta confection that falls off the shoulder and a black-and-white balloon-sleeved minidress with a train in the back). That is, if she doesn't go for the obvious and steal the finale gown: a plum-colored number so spectacularly draped in plumage, it looks as if it's blooming feathers.

Selena Gomez's Fuzzy Jacket Is Basically the Socially Acceptable Way to Wear a Blanket in Public

Selena Gomez is stepping back into the studio in style. Following a trip to Cabo San Lucas for a friend's bachelorette weekend, the 26-year-old actress and singer kept things casual in Orange County, CA, on Wednesday.

She opted for a black turtleneck and matching sweatpants but bundled up in a cozy, fuzzy teddy jacket. I'm pretty sure I have a similar one hanging in my closet, and let me tell you . . . wearing it feels like wrapping up in my favorite blanket. Selena paired her ensemble with white and black velcro sneakers, large silver hoop earrings, and a navy blue backpack. Ahead, see more photos of her look and shop similar comfy coats for yourself.

My Daughter With ADHD Started Using a Weighted Blanket, and I Saw a Change in Her Almost Immediately

My young daughter has ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder), and a big part of this condition that most people don't know about is emotional dysregulation. Many people with ADHD feel emotions very strongly and can have equally strong reactions. When my daughter is feeling angry, for example, she resembles Anger from Inside Out: screaming, crying, tight fists, the works.

She also frequently becomes frustrated, anxious, and sad. We have an area in our home specifically for her to go to when she's feeling overwhelmed and needs to calm down. There's a hanging swing, musical instruments, books, and a box filled with calm-down jars, fidgets, and squishies for her. The newest addition to the area, and one of the most useful aids, is a weighted blanket.

When my daughter is feeling overwhelmed with emotion, she grabs her Nordic Dreams weighted blanket ($89) and lays it on top of her. The pressure she feels from the blanket's weight makes her relaxed and calm, like she's getting a big hug. The science behind using a weighted blanket is that it causes the brain to release serotonin, a hormone that gives you a calming feeling.

Not only does her weighted blanket help her with her powerful emotions, but it's also a wonderful sleep aid. Many people with ADHD have a difficult time falling asleep at night, because it's difficult for them to slow down their racing mind and body. The weighted blanket helps my daughter fall asleep so much faster.

I could see the benefits from my daughter using a weighted blanket after its first use, and although the price of her weighted blanket was a bit steep, the benefits are well worth the money.

A 10-Song Introduction to the Infectious Power of Lizzo

Like everyone else who has a brain and two functioning ears, I've decided to dedicate my life to spreading the gospel of Lizzo.

The 30-year-old rapper, singer, and talented flautist - if playing flute and twerking on stage isn't instantly iconic, I don't know what is - dropped her debut album, Lizzobangers, in 2013, and she's been pumping out bop after bop ever since. Although it's long overdue (in my not so humble opinion), Lizzo is finally getting the mainstream shine she deserves, from flawless appearances on The Ellen DeGeneres Show and The Tonight Show to seeing her latest single, "Juice," chart on Billboard's Hot R&B.

Like many others, a lot of what appeals to me about Lizzo, other than her infectious beats, is her inclusive, empowering message. But in an age when feminism and self-acceptance are often hollowed out by big brands in order to sell everything from body wash to pink hats with the help of a cheeky hashtag, Lizzo continues to prove that her message is authentic. She lives what she raps; she puts immense thought into her lyrics, ensuring that they're not empowering for empowerment's sake.

For instance, in her 2017 track "Truth Hurts," she sings, "I will never ever, ever be your side chick," but that wasn't the original lyric. During Allison P. Davis's recent (and fantastic) profile of Lizzo in The Cut, the musician notes that the original lyric was "I could never ever, ever be a side chick," but she decided to tweak it to be more inclusive.

"B*tch, what about side chicks! I don't want to exclude them! I don't want to make them feel bad. I think that's why this feels brand new. I'm trying to be inclusive," she explains. "Could this song ["Like a Girl," her new track that's about throwing dollars at strippers "like a girl"] be in a Dove commercial? Yes, but it won't. They aren't thinking about everybody. . . . The old heads aren't ready for that."

While "the old heads" might not be ready for Lizzo's brand of confidence just yet, there's nothing standing in the way of falling in love with her yourself (if you haven't already). Check out her most essential songs ahead before her next album, Cuz I Love You, drops in April.

This Woman Did Her Makeup With Only $1 Products - Talk About Being Resourceful

Makeup can get a bit pricey, as we all know, but there's also a wide selection of hidden gems sitting in drugstore aisles and places you'd never think to look when buying products. Take it from YouTuber JuicyJas, who recently uploaded a video of herself creating a full face using only products from Dollar General.

The 26-minute video shows the beauty guru challenging herself to replicate her everyday look using a bunch of products from brands L.A. Colors and Broadway Colors, both of which are sold at Dollar General. Not to spoil the video for you or anything, but the result was actually pretty impressive. Check it out above to see how it all turned out.

Grey's Anatomy: If This Video Doesn't Make You Ship MerLuca, We Don't Know What to Tell You

Sometimes you just need to put on some Ariana Grande and get to jamming - whether you're at work or not. Ellen Pompeo clearly understands this, since the 49-year-old Grey's Anatomy star posted a video to her Instagram page of her doing exactly that. Joined by her costar Giacomo Gianniotti, who plays DeLuca on the series, Pompeo channeled her inner Fly Girl and put her moves to work for Grande's new song "Break Up With Your Girlfriend, I'm Bored" while on a break from filming.

"Sometimes . . . on set antics make you channel @arianagrande you're welcome," Pompeo captioned the video, which was filmed by Sam Hellmann.

Of course, Grande - who is a well-known Grey's fan - caught wind of the video and responded with sheer incredulity. "HELP ME JESUS," the 25-year-old singer commented - which, to be fair, is the only proper response to seeing Meredith Grey getting down to your song. Grande also posted the video to her Instagram, writing, "Guys if I'm honest ......... this is the best thing that's ever happened to me. @ellenpompeo I love u sm. I cant breathe. I'll never be the same."

We can't blame Grande for being overwhelmed considering she just dropped the single on Feb. 8, as well as an entire fifth album, and won her first-ever Grammy for best pop vocal album for Sweetener on Sunday. She's obviously on an emotional roller coaster right now.

As for Pompeo and Gianniotti, their sweet on-set moment definitely ignited the MerLuca love among Grey's fans. The big question now is will they have an official couple song and will it be one from Grande's impressive collection of love songs? Make it happen, Shonda!

Just When You Thought Turtlenecks Were Modest, J Lo Wore One as a Minidress

Leave it to Jennifer Lopez to rock the sexiest effin' turtleneck we've ever seen. The star chose this Zimmermann Moncur mini for her appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show (yes, she did chat about A Rod, in case you were wondering), and paired it simple black Casadei pumps and an ankle bracelet. How can you tear your eyes away from her legs? Please, let us know, because we're having trouble.

The design featured cutouts at the shoulder and hip, with a ruffled finish that pulled to one side, so the look was extremely formfitting. J Lo added a bunch of chunky rings and thin, oversize hoops. Only when she sat down on the couch could we finally release our breath and search for similar statement-making dresses.

This Teacher Was Fired For Giving Students Zeros When They Didn't Hand in Any Work, and Wow

Diane Tirado, a former eighth grade history teacher at Westgate K-8 School in Port St. Lucie, FL, found herself in a disappointing conundrum this past September. According to a now-viral Facebook post, after giving her class a two-week period to complete an explorer notebook project, several of her pupils didn't ever turn in the assignment.

"I'm so upset because we have a nation of kids that are expecting to get paid and live their life just for showing up and it's not real."

Because no work was done, Diane gave the students in question zeros, which they rightfully deserved. However, Westgate K-8 School has a "no zero policy" - meaning the lowest grade a teacher could give is a 50 percent - whether the work was completed or not. After refusing to award her students a 50 percent for no reason, she was fired. Rather than leaving with her tail between her legs, she stood up for what she believed in.

She left a message on the whiteboard for her kids reading, "Bye Kids. Mrs. Tirado loves you and wishes you the best in life. I have been fired for refusing to give you a 50 percent for not handing anything in."

In a follow-up comment, she explained that she left a parting note because she'd likely never see her students again. "I just wanted to say goodbye," she said. "This happened on a Friday at 3:30 p.m. I would not see most of my students again."

For Diane, the importance of giving kids credit for the effort they've actually put in is paramount to helping kids be successful later in life. After all, things are rarely given out for free in adulthood. "A grade in Mrs. Tirado's class is earned," she said. "I'm so upset because we have a nation of kids that are expecting to get paid and live their life just for showing up and it's not real. The reason I took on this fight was because it was ridiculous. Teaching should not be this hard."

I'll Admit AJ McLean and His Wife Are Really Cute - Even Though I Wish It Were Me

As a huge Backstreet Boys fan, I always dreamed of being Mrs. AJ McLean. I still remember when I bought the Backstreet's Back album and would fast-forward through it to get to AJ's verses. Even though things didn't exactly pan out how I'd hoped, I'm glad there is another woman out there who is able to make him happy. The woman in question is none other than AJ's longtime love, Rochelle DeAnna McLean. The Backstreet Boy and hairstylist first got together in 2009, and they made things official in 2011 with a goth-themed wedding. The two have been going strong ever since and are parents to two beautiful daughters, 6-year-old Ava and 1-year-old Lyric. Most recently, they stepped out together at the Grammys, but if you take a look at their Instagram accounts, you'll notice it's overflowing with cute moments. Things may not have worked out between AJ and me, but Rochelle clearly knows the shape of his heart.

Tolkien: Nicholas Hoult Is the Man Behind the Lord of the Rings Novels in the First Teaser

You might know the Lord of the Rings series like the back of your hand, but how well do you know the novels' author, J.R.R. Tolkien? If your answer is "not very well," then you should make a point of seeing the upcoming biopic about the writer's life starring Nicholas Hoult, aptly titled Tolkien.

The official description of the upcoming drama notes that it will explore "the formative years of the orphaned author as he finds friendship, love, and artistic inspiration among a group of fellow outcasts at school." Although the first teaser, above, is brief, we can already see the connections between Frodo, Sam, and the rest of the fictional band of friends to Tolkien and his real-life pals, whose relationships suffered after the outbreak of World War I.

In addition to Hoult, the film stars Lily Collins, Colm Meaney, Anthony Boyle, Patrick Gibson, Tom Glynn-Carney, Craig Roberts, and more, who all play people whose interactions with Tolkien eventually inspired him to write his famous Middle-earth novels. Check out the trailer, then be sure to catch it in theaters on May 10.

A Meerkat Can Eat a Roach Named After Your Ex For Valentine's Day, So, That's 1 Option

Image Source: Getty / Matt Cardy

The El Paso Zoo will help you be petty this Valentine's Day. A week before the holiday, the zoo shared a flyer stating it would name cockroaches after people's exes, then feed said cockroaches to their meerkats. "What's the perfect Valentine's Day gift? Naming a cockroach after your ex, of course!" the zoo wrote on Facebook. It's . . . poetic, quite frankly.

Following the overwhelming response - the original post now has over 5,000 shares - the El Paso Zoo has decided to extend the offer to other animals, like a cotton-top tamarin, golden lion tamarin, and white-headed marmoset. To participate in the stunning display of "no, in fact I'm not over it yet, Janet!," simply message the El Paso Zoo with your ex's name on Facebook and tune into the feeding on Facebook Live or the meerkat webcam on Valentine's Day at 2:15 p.m. MT.

This Hilarious "7 Rings" Lisa Kudrow Mashup Works So Well, It Could Be Part of the Song

I never thought Lisa Kudrow would make an appearance in an Ariana Grande video, but this fan's mashup is too good not to share. The catchy lyrics "I want it, I got it" from Grande's "7 Rings" song on her new Thank U, Next album happen to pair perfectly with a clip from The Comeback, a former HBO comedy Kudrow starred in. The Comeback was a beloved series that followed Valerie Cherish, a former B-list sitcom actress who's itching to get back in the spotlight and agrees to chronicle her return to television after landing a new role. The show was revived for a second and final season in 2014 years after its 2005 cancellation, and any fan of the satirical series will appreciate this absurd and hilarious video idea.

Jesse Tyler Ferguson shared the video, which was originally made by YouTuber David Levitz. In it, we see Grande in her sexy pink outfits from the "7 Rings" video spliced with footage of Kudrow's character shouting "I got it!" from the pilot episode. It's pretty freakin' genius, and I personally can't stop laughing. Check out the mashup ahead, and then watch each of the full videos for more context.

Jessica Rothe and Her "Badass, B*tchy, Messy" Journey in Happy Death Day 2U

Back in late 2017, Happy Death Day stormed into theaters with its fresh and thrilling take on a well-worn story device: one person living the same day over and over again, à la 1993's Groundhog Day. Not long after the film's release, we were delighted to learn that, like Tree, we'd be remaining in this strange universe. Writer-director Christopher Landon already had an idea for a sequel by the time he finished the first film, and shortly thereafter, he was given the green light. Even though it feels like the blink of an eye, Happy Death Day 2U is about to hit theaters. And luckily, I had the chance to sit down and speak with the big star, Jessica Rothe.

While chatting with Rothe about the film, she presented more as the fully realized Tree, who has been through some serious sh*t and is kind, gracious, and open-hearted because of it. We sat down, and I immediately commended her for adding so much depth to a lead female character. Such a complex and three-dimensional character can be hard to find in Hollywood in general, and that's especially true for horror films, comedies, and horror-comedies. Tree isn't a hapless first victim, a prop, an easy kill, or a sex object. She's not just one thing: she's not the mean girl, or the girl next door, or the final girl. She's everything; she's the hero of the story, and she goes through an incredible emotional arc that really makes you care about her.

"I love that this is a girl who sees the killer, and instead of running away, picks up an ax and runs toward him screaming."

When I mentioned to Rothe how impressed I was by Tree's incredible journey (and range!), she really commended writer-director Landon. "I'm still amazed every day that Chris wrote and created such an amazingly vibrant, complex, three-dimensional, badass, b*tchy, messy, lovable human being. And that arc is something you don't see - not only in genre, but in movies for young women. You don't really get to see women start out despicable and then transform into their own hero . . . I love that she is her own hero. I love that this is a girl who sees the killer, and instead of running away, picks up an axe and runs toward him screaming."

This kind of "no f*cks" Tree is dialed up to 100 percent in Happy Death Day 2U. In one hilarious montage, Tree has to die a bunch of times in order to figure out what the hell is going on. This leads to that one unforgettable scene in the trailer, in which Tree jumps out of a plane in just a bikini. As it turns out, that was Rothe's favorite death to film, and it was pretty complicated to pull off. "It was a trust fall. Because I was just up in a plane shell, and they had mats below me, and I just had to not scream too much." Then, of course, they had to shoot her landing separately.

You don't see Tree "stick the landing" in the preview, but it basically culminates in this slow-motion shot of our fair lady, grinning and flipping off the camera while plummeting into the ground at a deadly speed. "I couldn't be on a harness because I was wearing a bikini, so the only way they could get me to do it was by building this platform," Rothe recalled. "I was on it, and they had to drop me. They had to almost dunk tank me off the platform. But in order to get the pose, I had to strike it before they dropped me, even though I was being dropped seven or eight feet. So I had to tense my body, and flip off, and make a crazy face, and then they'd count three, two, one and the floor would just drop out from under me, and I'd land on a bunch of pads, but it was oddly difficult."

Going back to that whole thing about being emotionally invested in Tree, Rothe also revealed a shocking fact about the first film: Tree was supposed to straight-up die at the end. Like, for realsies. "I die. I make it to Tuesday the 19th. I wake up - it's on the DVD extras. I filmed the scene. I wake up, and everyone's at the hospital with me, my dad's there, I'm super happy, and then Gregory's wife comes in and poisons me because I was sleeping with her husband, and I die," Rothe told me. Test audiences were furious because they had grown so attached to the character. "They were pissed. They were like, 'You made us care about this person. You can't do this. We went on this journey. We love her.'"

But here's the best part of that story: Landon decided to change the ending so audiences wouldn't have to endure Tree's permanent death. During that editing process, he had an epiphany about the sequel. "We changed it. We reshot it, and then about a month before the first one came out, Chris called me and was like, 'I have a crazy idea for you,' and he told me about it. I said, 'You're insane, but you're also the only person who could pull this off. So if you're in, I'm in.' And that's where it came from. And Chris didn't know; he said until he was in the editing bay and then he would pick up on certain little things in the film and be like, 'Huh. I wonder what a fun way to explain this would be.'"

Of course, I don't want to give away the big twist. But just know that there really is a moment in the first film that directly correlates to the secret! And so, the second film was born. And shot. And reshot. And edited. And finished. After two rounds, I wondered if Rothe was sick and tired of shooting the same thing over and over again. As a matter of fact, the opposite is true: she lives for it. "I'm a perfectionist. So, I love it. It scratches this deep itch inside of me. I would even tell Chris, I'd be like, 'I need one more take,' and he'd be like, 'We've got it.' I'd be like, 'No, but just one more,' and he'd be like, 'You're going to do this 70 more times. You don't want it.'"

Then again, Rothe wasn't the one repeating her own actions over and over again. Tree does all kinds of crazy sh*t while everything else stays the same. Rothe simply had to replicate Tree's sleeping pose. "The only thing that I experienced that was super, super technical was the wake-up on the pillow. And it was even down to like, 'OK, you had this curl in front of your eye, and we need more drool on the pillow, and your lips were pushed up a bit more, and tilt your chin.' We really tried to match stuff," Rothe told me.

This is the part where she dropped another shocking tidbit: "Chris never reused a shot. So, everything you see in the film was shot new. It's not like he was like, 'Oh. We did Carter's wake-up once. We'll just use that forever.' It's different every time." It's that kind of attention to detail that really makes the film seem so special in the first place.

And finally, the obvious question I know you wanted me to ask: what about Happy Death Day 3? Oh, it's more than a possibility at this point. Of course, Universal Pictures has to green light it first. "It's very dependent on how this one does, so go see the movie!" Rothe said to me with a laugh. Then, she gave up the goods, saying Landon has definitely been marinating: "I think he has the whole idea in his head, but he's keeping it close to the chest. All I know is, whatever I'm expecting, it will be completely different from anything I could ever imagine, but I also know and trust that it will be the appropriate bookend to this wonderful journey we've gone on with these crazy people."
