7 Creative Ways to Cut Back on Waste on a Daily Basis

I enjoy setting goals for myself. I want to lift more weights, eat fewer French fries and more vegetables, and stop spending money on frivolous things. But this year, I've decided to shake things up. I want to make changes that will benefit someone other than myself and actually do some good in the world. So, I made a pact to take steps to reduce my personal waste on a daily basis, and it turns out, it's a lot easier to do than you might think (and it makes me feel pretty great, too). There's a Toy Story 4 Ice Cream Coming Soon, So Now Would Be a Perfect Time to Panic

The buzz surrounding Toy Story 4's arrival in theaters this year just keeps on building. The movie won't officially be released until June 21, but it looks like there's a Toy Story 4-themed ice cream that you can enjoy while you patiently wait to stampede to the nearest movie theater to watch it. According Candy Hunting, Edy's Ice Cream is gearing up to release two brand new flavors of the ice cream any minute now, so get your spoons ready.

The first of the two flavors is Cinnamon Churro Carnival Combo, which, judging by the photo above, appears to be a mixture of vanilla ice cream, cinnamon swirl, and pieces of actual churros. The second flavor is called Chocolate Peanut Butter Midway Mash-Up, and it looks like it'll be made with a chocolate ice cream base mixed with peanut butter and chocolate chunks.

I don't know about you, but both of these sound pretty dreamy if you ask me. No other details have emerged about when either of the flavors are set to make their way to freezers, but Disney Food Blog recently reported that they both have already been spotted in grocery stores in Pennsylvania. That's probably a really good sign that they'll be available in a store near you sometime soon, so you may want to keep your eyes peeled for them the next time you're in the freezer aisle.

Joanna Gaines Has a New Home Goods Line at Anthropologie, and Everything's Absurdly Chic

Joanna Gaines is taking over our favorite retailers, and we're not one bit mad about it. First, the interior design guru transformed the aisles of Target with her dreamy Hearth and Hand collection, and now, she's invading Anthropologie stores with a line of chic home furnishings. The former Fixer Upper star teamed up with Anthropologie to design 19 cozy items, including textured pillows and decorative rugs with pops of blush and blue here and there. Select stores will begin carrying the rustic pieces on Feb. 25, but you can shop our favorite picks online ahead. Prices start as low as $38, so what are you waiting for?

You Can Now Douse Your Disneyland Pineapple Whip in Bacon Bits, and I'm Fully Salivating

When Belinda Carlisle sang that "heaven is a place on earth," I'm 99 percent sure she was preemptively referring to The Tropical Hideaway restaurant at Disneyland. The fast-casual, tiki-themed eatery, which opened its doors at the end of 2018, is the only place that offers a new salty-sweet treat park-goers can't get enough of: bacon-topped raspberry-pineapple whip. Yes, you read that correctly - bacon on top of a swirled raspberry-pineapple soft serve. *Wipes away drool from chin*

This dessert is technically a secret menu item, as you must ask the the Tropical Hideaway cashier to "spice up" your order of soft serve to indicate that you want candied bacon crumbles sprinkled on top, which costs just $1 extra. Pro tip: apparently if you ask for the bacon on the side, they give you a lot more of the smoky bits than when the employees pour 'em on themselves. Needless to say, this concoction has officially catapulted to the tippy-top of our edible Disneyland bucket list.

A Little Love Goes a Long Way: Basic French Macarons

This $20 Product Will Stop Your Dog From Tracking Mud Into the House Ever Again

If you have a dog (or an outdoor cat), this scene likely plays out multiple times a day, every day of the year. You take your sweet pooch to play in the park, let them out in the backyard, or walk them around the block, and no matter what the season or what the weather, their paws become filthy. We all have our methods for cleaning said paws - a dry towel by the door, a package of baby wipes, a silent prayer that none of the mud will rub off onto your floors and furniture if you do nothing - but somehow, none ever seem to be truly effective . . . until now.

Enter: the Mudbuster Portable Dog Paw Cleaner, a $20 product that cleans dogs' paws in seconds, no matter where you are.

The portable product comes in three different sizes and has a three-piece setup that includes a canister with a rolled silicone mat inside. You simply add a bit of clean water, slide your furry friend's paw in, twist the Mudbuster so the soft silicone bristles can get all the gunk from between the pads of their paws, remove them squeaky clean, and pat to dry. Repeat the process for the other three paws, and let them run loose in the house without worry of muddy tracks all over.

Genius.

See exactly how the product works in the photos ahead, and grab one (or three) for your doggos.

These Drumsticks have only been spotted at Kroger so far, but fingers crossed they make their way to other retailers soon. Even in the middle of Winter, I'm ready to buy these in bulk!

Be Still, My Heart: Starbucks Is Bringing Back the Cherry Mocha For Valentine's Day

Love is officially in the air at Starbucks! After kicking off Valentine's Day last year with the release of its Cherry Mocha drink, Starbucks has announced that the chocolate- and cherry-flavored beverage will return to the menu for a second time, alongside a handful of other festive treats. The drink is a blend of a sweet mocha sauce and candied cherry syrup with hot espresso and the steamed milk of your choice. It's all topped off with whipped cream and a dusting of sugar and cocoa valentine sprinkles. Anyone hoping to skip the flowers and candy this year can head over to Starbucks to purchase a hot, iced, or blended Cherry Mocha from now until Feb. 14.

To get even more into the spirit of the romantic holiday, customers can also snag themselves a few Valentine's Day-themed bakery items that are also currently available at Starbucks locations nationwide. This 11-Year-Old's Rendition of "Impossible" Proves Talent Has No Age Limit

After becoming the first contestant to earn two golden buzzers, Angelica Hale took the America's Got Talent: The Champions stage on Monday night to deliver her final performance - and she knocked it out of the gosh-darn park. Singing a cover of Shontelle's "Impossible," the 11-year-old put her impressive vocal range on display, hitting all the right notes and successfully giving us chills. After wrapping her performance, all four judges gave her a standing ovation, and Howie Mandel, who awarded Angelica her second golden buzzer, proudly said, "You're living up to your name of being an angel." We couldn't agree more! Listen to her entire cover ahead, and prepare to feel ALL the feelings.

Eve and Villanelle Can't Let Each Other Go in This First Look at Killing Eve Season 2

The obsession begins anew in the second season of BBC America's Killing Eve, and from the looks of the things, the story is about to get even more intense. Season two picks up seconds after the finale of season one, and it's obvious that things between MI-5 officer Eve (Screen Actors Guild Award winner Sandra Oh) and Villanelle (Jodie Comer) are getting kicked up a notch.

"Sometimes, when you love someone," Villanelle narrates in the trailer. "You do crazy things."

Those crazy things seem to include escaping the hospital mid-recovery, openly admitting an intention to stabbing someone, and (possibly) dressing up as a pig in a milkmaid's costume. The trailer doesn't give us much in the way of details on what we can expect in season two, but we do know that this season will show us exactly how bad things can turn in Eve and Villanelle's poisonous relationship. As executive producer Sally Woodward Gentle explained, this season will toy with what "would happen to Villanelle . . . if she thought that Eve's gaze wasn't always on her." Whew. We're already on pins and needles.

Watch the trailer above and be ready to dive back into the insanity when the show comes back on April 7.

I Watched After's New Trailer, and It's Basically Fifty Shades of Grey For Teens

A new trailer for After has arrived, and it's safe to say the sultry preview of the One Direction fan fiction-turned-bestselling-novel's adaptation will get fans in as much of a tizzy as the the teaser did when it dropped back in November 2018.

The film is based on writer Anna Todd's story, which follows a dedicated college student (Josephine Langford) who falls for a standard-issue bad boy - Tons of tattoos! Brooding! Watching her while she sleeps! Making out with her in the rain! - named Hardin Scott (Hero Fiennes-Tiffin). Originally the story was about Harry Styles - yes, that Harry Styles - when it debuted on Wattpad, and it quickly become a phenomenon with millions of passionate readers. Naturally, the name of the male character had to be tweaked (although he still bears the same HS initials), but it seems the core plot remains.

Keep reading to see the best reactions to the movie, which hits theaters April 12, from fans on Twitter.

OK, We Really Need to Discuss Will Smith's Genie in the New Aladdin Trailer For a Sec

Forty-five seconds into the new trailer for Disney's live-action reboot of Aladdin, a certain street rat (played by Mena Massoud) rubs a certain lamp, a swirl of bright blue gas comes pouring out, and POOF! We see Will Smith in all his Genie-fied glory for the first time. "You really don't know who I am?" Smith's Genie jokes with Aladdin. "Genies, wishes, lamp . . . none of that is ringing a bell?!"

While he definitely looks like a genie . . . well, we have some thoughts about him as the Genie.

To be fair, we've known for a while now that Smith would be playing the Genie in Guy Ritchie's remake, which seemed like a pretty inspired casting choice - while no one will ever be able to fill the gold, pointed shoes left by Robin Williams in the 1992 original, Smith has more than enough charisma and comedic timing to really make the role his own. But in terms of visuals, the live-action version of the iconic, wish-granting genie who helps Aladdin woo Jasmine while cracking one-liners and eventually seeking his freedom leaves a lot to be desired.

Is it the too-bright shade of blue? Or the overly pronounced pointy ears? His extremely muscular back, or incredibly thick neck?! Regardless of what it is, all of the aforementioned qualities have combined to give the character an uncanny valley effect that is unsettling Aladdin fans all across Twitter, which you can see ahead.

The New Killer, the Big Secret, and Every Other Big Twist in Happy Death Day 2U Explained

Warning: MASSIVE spoilers for all of Happy Death Day 2U lay below!

Now that Happy Death Day 2U has finally arrived, we have full license to tell you everything you're dying to know about the movie. And, well, there's a lot to go over! Even after the first film dazzled audiences, it left one big mystery hanging over our heads: why does Tree get stuck living the same day over and over again? Director Chris Landon promised there was a logical answer for all the insanity, which eventually went on to become the premise for the sequel.

Months passed, and then we finally got the trailer for HDD2U, wherein we learned that there isn't just one mystery but many. Tree is stuck in the same cycle again? There's a different killer?! What the hell is going on?

Luckily for you, I've seen the movie and I know at least 10 words and can string together sentences at a fifth-grade level. (I'm kidding . . . I have a college degree in English - you're in good hands.) Allow me to tell you all the ins and outs of the sequel and what it might mean for the potential third movie. Yes, there's a potential third movie! Anyway, this is your last chance to turn back before I spoil everything.

So, Why Is There a Time Loop?

So, first things first: what's the big mystery that gets solved in the first one? Why does Tree get stuck in a murdery version of Groundhog Day (1993)? Remember that guy who's roommates with Carter (Israel Broussard)? His name is Ryan (he's played by Phi Vu), and he's been working on a crazy machine for his physics thesis. It might be quantum physics. You know, something that screams science. Anyway, his machine is supposed to slow down time, but obviously he's still working out the kinks with his lab partners, Samar and Andrea (Suraj Sharma and Sarah Yarkin). On the night of Tree's big cosmic event, the machine experiences a huge surge, and it somehow throws her into that crazy time loop. That's what causes the whole of the first film, Happy Death Day.

Of course, we know she breaks the cycle by figuring out who her killer is (her roommate!) and killing her instead. If you're wondering where the first one winks at this whole affair, it's when Tree is at her sorority and Danielle (Rachel Matthews) is bothering her about going to the party. There's a rolling blackout, part of a pattern of blackouts that have been plaguing the school for weeks (because of the machine). Danielle rolls her eyes and says, "Our university dollars at work." So sneaky!

What's the Big Twist?

Now you're all caught up, and we're at the beginning of HDD2U - Tree has broken her curse, but now there's another killer, and he's coming after Ryan, who now seems to be the one in a time loop. Ryan catches up Tree and Carter on the situation, and they agree to help.

This new killer turns out to be a Ryan from the future (or another dimension). He's presumably traveled to this realm to kill the original Ryan and to stop him from perfecting his crazy time-bending machine. Just as they're trying to send the other Ryan away, the dean of the university comes in, hoping to shut down the whole operation. The machine goes off again, causing another explosion that changes everything.

Now Tree is once again stuck in a time loop, which is what we see in the trailer. That's because she's actually been zapped to an alternate dimension! Things are mostly the same, but a little different. Carter is dating Danielle (wow), and there's a different killer who is not Tree's roommate. Oh, and Tree's mom is alive.

How Do They Fix Everything?

Basically, the whole group has to figure out how to fix the machine and send Tree back to her original dimension. But she's the only one who can keep track of the algorithms they've attempted. Cue the montage of her dying all kinds of ways (including jumping out of a plane in a bikini). Eventually they figure it out, but Tree feels conflicted. She doesn't want to lose Carter, whom she's fallen in love with, but she can't stand to go back to the dimension in which her mother has died.

Who Is the New Killer?

By the way, if you're wondering who the new killer is, it's Gregory Butler, the hunky doctor whom Tree is having an affair with in HDD. Well, sort of. In the alternate universe, Tree's roommate, Lori, is the one who's sleeping with him. She's not plotting to kill Tree anymore, obviously. Instead, Gregory and his wife have both conspired to kill Lori! They use the same gimmick that Lori was going to use: let loose hospitalized criminal John Tombs and blame him for the mess.

How Does Happy Death Day 2U End?

Tree saves the day, obviously. She saves her roommate and foils the plans of the dastardly Gregory and his wife. Ultimately, she decides to go back to her own dimension. Even though it sucks to lose her mom again, she decides to move on and move forward with her man.

That's basically it! There is, of course, a postcredits scene that hints at a potential third film, but truly, they could leave the legacy here and it would still be a great legacy. In the end (and in my opinion), HDD2U did an incredible job of answering all my questions and expanding the universe. The film also loses its own shackles and spreads its wings! It's not a horror film; it's not a film with a Groundhog Day gimmick. It's a hilarious, tense, emotional, campy ride, and a wild one at that. Now, let's get that third one.

Kate McKinnon Literally Took Me Out With Her Singing in SNL's "Valentine's Song" Music Video

Although Saturday Night Live's Feb. 9 episode featured Halsey as both the musical guest and the host, there was another standout singer among the cast: Kate McKinnon. McKinnon joined Halsey and Aidy Bryant in a hilarious music video about having your Valentine's Day ruined by family members and acquaintances when all you want to do is be with your significant other. The video was already funny with Bryant singing about her mother messing up a romantic moment for her and Halsey crooning about her boss getting her a giant stuffed animal, even though they're not friends. But I nearly hit the floor when McKinnon came on the screen belting about her son awkwardly giving her an intimate Valentine's Day card without knowing what it meant. So do yourself a favor, and watch the video above for a good laugh!

It Appears Kim and Kanye Have Trapped Kenny G in Their Home For Valentine's Day

Kenny G, blink if you need to be rescued. The legendary saxophonist was recently hired by Kanye West to serenade Kim Kardashian on Valentine's Day, but what might have originally been a romantic - albeit ostentatious - gesture, soon turned into a cause for concern. See, Kanye arranged for Kenny to play from the couple's furniture-less living room surrounded by tiny vases each containing a single stem rose . . . with seemingly no exit in sight. (OK, in their defense, they left a little aisle for him to walk through.)

Shortly after the surprise, Kenny offered a sign that he had made it to safety. "This was fun! Thanks having me be a part of your Valentine's Day," he wrote on Instagram. Kim clearly had a blast as she shared several videos from the private performance and wrote on Twitter, "Best husband award goes to mine!!!! Most thoughtful gifts ever!!!!" Well, we see right through Kim's tactic to distract us with her excessive use of exclamation points, and we still have a lot of questions. Shall we?

  1. For starters, how many songs did Kenny play? Which songs did he play? Are we talking about a full concert here or . . . ?
  2. Were other musicians initially asked, or was Kenny Kanye's all-or-nothing selection?
  3. Was he chosen because of the simple fact that his name also starts with a K? (One has to ask these questions - sorry, we don't make the rules!)
  4. Wouldn't Kenny prefer to be spending Valentine's Day with his someone special? Why doesn't anyone ask who Kenny would like to be serenaded by?
  5. Did they arrange the roses after Kenny was standing in place, or did he have to Mission: Impossible his way in there?
  6. What if he has to, you know, use the restroom?
  7. Which poor intern had to set up all those roses? Because we have an Icy Hot patch with their name on it.
  8. How mad was Travis Scott that he couldn't book Kenny for Kylie first?
  9. Do you think they originally wanted Kendall Jenner to serenade them, and accidentally called the wrong Kenny?
  10. Did Kim just kind of . . . stand there and smile the whole time? Like when friends sing you "Happy Birthday," and you just sit there in agony as everyone stares at you?
  11. Where - and we truly cannot stress this enough - is their furniture?

See How Celebrities Are Paying Tribute to Their Significant Others on Valentine's Day

Happy Valentine's Day! The stars were feeling the love on Thursday and took to social media to share lovey-dovey photos of their better halves and give glimpses into how they might be celebrating. Miley Cyrus celebrated the holiday by sharing a new batch of photos from her surprise wedding to Liam Hemsworth, while Michelle and Barack Obama both had us tearing up with their romantic tributes to each other. Whether you're single or taken, you'll love scrolling through these sweet snaps.

Every Breathtaking Photo From Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth's Secret Wedding!

Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth tied the knot on Dec. 23 and have emerged as two of Hollywood's most adorable newlyweds ever since. Although there was quite a bit of speculation surrounding their marital status, the 26-year-old singer and 29-year-old actor finally confirmed that they married each other in an intimate ceremony at their Tennessee home. They subtly made the announcement by posting a handful of pictures from their wedding on Instagram. According to People, their big day was absolutely "perfect." Miley and Liam reportedly "always wanted a small, private celebration" with their loved ones and that's exactly what they got. "She loves her Tennessee home and was very happy about having the ceremony there," a source added.

Almost two months later, Miley celebrated their first Valentine's Day as a married couple by sharing a string of never-before-seen photos of their wedding. In one black and white snapshot, the two - surrounded by a floral arrangement - hold each other close while dancing. "Thank you for always bending down to hug me," Miley captioned the post. "I promise I will always meet you in the middle on my tippiest toes! I love you Valentine!"

At the ceremony, Miley opted for a beautiful off-the-shoulder gown by Vivienne Westwood, while Liam kept things cool in a black suit and white sneakers. The fete brought out Miley's parents, Tish and Billy Ray, as well as her sisters Noah and Brandi. Liam's brothers, Chris and Luke, also attended along with his father, Craig, and pal Conrad Jack Carr.

Miley and Liam's love story dates all the way back to 2009 when they first met on the set of Nicholas Sparks's The Last Song. While sparks didn't initially fly for Miley, things eventually changed once she got to know him. The couple dated on and off since then, but things are really official now! Congrats again to Miley and Liam!

Just When I Thought J Lo's Star Couldn't Shine Any Brighter, She Throws On This Bright Green Gown

Jennifer Lopez has a bit of a glow to her, but we can't fully credit that to all the adorable stories she's been telling about her relationship with ARod lately. The Second Act star looked absolutely radiant on Wednesday when she took her talents to Jimmy Kimmel Live and stepped out in a lime-green Maria Lucia Hohan dress with a wraparound neckline and geometric pleating on the waist area. She paired the dreamy, backless gown with a pair of yellow strappy Stuart Weitzman sandals that are making us want to add all the neon we possibly can to our closets pronto.

There's a New Little Bites Flavor Out, and Your Kids Are Going to LOVE It

Growing up in the '00s, Little Bites was a go-to snack in my household. As little mini muffins or brownies, they kind of teetered the line between a quick breakfast option and dessert. While I cannot get enough of the chocolate chip muffin variety to this day, there's a new flavor in town, and it looks dang good. Recently, The Junk Food Aisle - an Instagram account dedicated to uncovering the most sinful food on grocery store shelves - said they found the new churro flavor in Walmart. Yum, we can't wait to try it!

The Sexiest Books of All Time Will Have You Blushing With Every Turn of the Page

Sexiness in books is preconceived to be limited to romance novels, but it's more than that. It's a universal concept that takes on many connotations about having power and agency and challenging old norms about sex. Whether it's Lolita and Anna Karenina for class or picking up Zane's book for pleasure (pun intended), these stories center on a woman's narrative or celebrate sexuality in a liberating way that's not exclusive to romance. Books that were considered too scandalous and taboo for society are now being praised for their revolutionary schools of thought, particularly now because we are at a juncture in society where we're having open discourses about sex and pushing marginalized voices to the forefront. The impressive books on this list have been doing that way before it registered in our collective consciousness.

Get an Exclusive Look at the "Funny, Action-Packed, and Sweet" New Kim Possible Movie

If you've been itching for another look at Disney's live-action Kim Possible movie, then sit down, relax, and press play on our exclusive clip, above.

In it, cast members like Sadie Stanley and Sean Giambrone - who play Kim Possible and her BFF Ron Stoppable, respectively - give fans the low-down on what to expect from the film as they hit the red carpet for the film's premiere. The iconic Disney Channel characters from the 2000s animated series are back, and things have obviously changed a little given how it's taking place over a decade later, but the empowering themes in the movie are still very much present.

The cast aren't the only people who got to chat about the movie, however - the original voice of Kim Possible, Christy Carlson Romano, told the camera that the character "really represents being empowered as a young person in high school" as she tries to find her way. This Guy Made a Hilarious Video Showing What Moms Are Like, and It Is Spot Freakin' On

Moms

Posted by Trey Kennedy on Friday, December 21, 2018

Trey Kennedy, a comedian with a knack for creating hilarious videos, recently did a spoof on what moms are actually like that will make both kids and parents chuckle. He shared the clip - which is appropriately titled "Moms"- on his Facebook page, and it instantly went viral. After opening with how his nonexistent kids need to somehow pull their grades up from an 89 average, he dove into some of our favorite mom-isms of all time. He touched on everything from how obsessed moms are with Hoda Kotb to how men "can never find anything" to how getting water outside the bathtub can send some mamas over the edge. And the screaming into the phone bit? I absolutely lost it. You just gotta love moms!

The Hardest Thing About Having Your Last Baby

When you're sure you're done having babies, when you know you couldn't possibly handle another child, when you finally feel confident you've brought your last newborn home, there's a feeling - something you can't explain until you get there. It's not that you'll really miss having a newborn, because that sh*t is hard. The cracked nipples, the postpartum bleeding, the all-night feedings, the confusion of nap schedules and bottle feedings as they get older, the cleaning up of high chairs and spit up, the diapers - it's certainly not all that.

I'll always miss that chapter, even if I've never been happier to give away rockaroos and bumbos.

It's that you'll never again be anticipating the arrival of a little human you can't wait to meet. That you'll never announce your baby's birth or introduce them by name for the very first time. That you'll never have that special quiet of a sleeping newborn in the house. That you'll never again be home in your pajamas wrapped up all day in your brand new little family.

That's what's hard about being done for me. That I've come to the end of a chapter that has included some of the most precious moments in life. The ones you get teary-eyed just thinking about. The ones you're nostalgic for minutes after they happen. The ones you try desperately to hold onto through pictures and videos.

It's the end of a chapter that has all the best parts highlighted. The sweetness of a new baby, the tenderness of an emotional mom, the excitement of an older sibling. The way visitors whisper when they come over bearing food or flowers. The way friends and family check in, send cards, and offer help. The way you've never loved your partner more than when you see them look into your baby's eyes. The way watching them swaddle those tiny little arms and legs is enough to make your heart burst.

I'll always miss that chapter, even if I've never been happier to give away rockaroos and bumbos. To be done buying diapers. To go all day without worrying about nap schedules or feeding times. To watch them play in their first soccer game and learn to read. To overhear their make-believe conversations and witness them say sorry without being prompted. To watch them grow.

But I'll always, always, look back so fondly on those sweet days. The ones that were beautiful even though they were hard. The ones that you may not remember the details of, but you'll never forget the feeling of.

And this Valentine's Day, they're keeping alive their streak of posting downright adorable tributes to each other. On Thursday, Michelle shared two photos of the Obama family - including their two daughters, Malia, 20, and Sasha, 17 - with the caption, "So lucky to call these three my valentines for all these years."

Barack also posted a message for his wife on Instagram. He shared a photo of the two dancing at an event where Michelle looks like she's really feeling the beat. "Happy Valentine's Day to the extraordinarily smart, beautiful, funny, one and only @MichelleObama," he wrote. "It's true; she does get down to Motown." Gaahhh.

Although Barack and Michelle are no longer in the White House, they've still kept fans and supporters in the loop when it comes to their tight-knit relationship. Reading a Book by a Nigerian Author Changed My Life - Here Are 6 Others That Might Change Yours

The first time I picked up a book by a Nigerian author, I was in college, sifting through my understanding of what it meant to be black. The book was Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, and it's safe to say it changed my life.

The main character, Ifemelu, is forced to contend with her own blackness for the first time when she moves to America - a process that is foreign to someone whose race is thrust upon them the moment they enter the world. Before Adichie, I was well-versed in the imaginings of blackness through the American lens - both black and white. I understood the deafening cloud of oppression and the persistent struggle that weaves its way through every narrative. I understood that blackness, even when unmentioned, always lurked quietly in the background - easily called up when a new character crossed the page.

Americanah is different. Ifemelu is black but not in the way the American characters in the book are; not in the way that I am. Her blackness is more solid somehow, unburdened by quarter-white 23andMe test results and a torrid history that is danced around delicately. She looks at black American culture from a precarious distance and conceptualizes race in a way that is captivating because while she's aware of it, she isn't consumed by it. She learns what it means to be black over the course of the novel - because race isn't something she is forced to consider before she arrives in America.

It's the perspective I didn't know I needed as a young, queer black girl looking to understand myself.

It made me reexamine my understandings of race and its mere existence as a category. It's the perspective I didn't know I needed as a young, queer black girl looking to understand myself. From there I fell in love with Adichie and Nigerian authors as a whole (seriously, it's all I talk about on the 'gram). And while no two authors are the same, they all share the ability to create bodies of work where blackness isn't prescriptive but descriptive. Their worlds are often filled with black characters who are just living, which taught me that I could just live, too.

Although I have my own personal infatuation with Nigerian authors, they're part of a new generation of young Nigerian artists captivating readers worldwide. In early 2017, The New York Times reported the renaissance taking place on the continent and the ways their works challenge and address age-old taboos and traditions that went previously unaddressed. The result is vibrant and energetic prose - work that delights, haunts, and travels everywhere from the streets of Lagos to small, American towns.

Ahead, I've rounded up the contemporary Nigerian authors you need to read now - and which books to start with.

The 1 Tip From a Dietitian That'll Help You Understand Overeating - And Finally Stop

There's a fine line between feeling satisfied after a meal and feeling stuffed. A lot of us fly past that line all the time and don't see it until it's far, far too late - slumped over, holding your stomach, undoing the top button of your jeans. The physical discomfort will thankfully pass, but overeating can also have long-term consequences, especially if you're trying to lose weight. Wouldn't it be great if we could just tell when we're perfectly satisfied and then . . . stop?

"Eat until you are no longer hungry, not until you are full," is the way Kristin Kirkpatrick, a registered dietitian at the Cleveland Clinic's Wellness Institute, puts it. But what's the distinction there, and how do you make it happen? For many of us, the feelings of hunger don't seem to stop until we're as full as we can possibly be. For me, that means post-dinner snacks like cereal, applesauce, or carrots - something to nibble on to fill up that last little bit. This is fine if you're still actively feeling hungry, Kristin said. But if you leave a meal still knowing you could pack a little more in, even though you feel satisfied, it might actually be time to stop.

"If we truly tap into hunger cues," Kristin said, "we would only eat when we feel hunger" - not just to fill up the last empty space in our stomach. This can be a tough distinction to make. One way to do it? Just slow down. Kristin said there's research to show that chewing more can help prevent overeating, and a 2017 study proved that slower eaters are less likely to gain weight. Even beyond that, slowing down gives you that extra time to check in with your body and see if you're satisfied. (Eating tasty, filling food helps too - here are some options to get you started.)

What you're trying to avoid is that feeling of being uncomfortably full: heavy, bloated, tired, like there's "a brick in your stomach," Kristin said. You probably know what it feels like to be overfull or really hungry; now it's a matter of distinguishing between the finer points in the scale until you hit your perfect, satisfied state. "Over time, it becomes easier to sense," Kristin said.

So at your next meal, try chewing more, slowing down your bites, and asking yourself how you're actually feeling before moving on to the next thing. Still hungry? Go for it. Feeling sated? Great - take a break and set down the fork. Tuning into your body's hunger cues will help you shed pounds and, even better, feel fueled instead of overfull.

16 Things That Simply Would Not Exist Without Black Women

It shouldn't be news anymore that women have invented everything from beer and coffee to wifi and disposable diapers. But what's more is that black women specifically have offered their ingenuity, innovation, and creativity to the world in ways you wouldn't believe. I take it you ran a brush through your hair this morning? You can thank Lyda Newman for keeping your locks sleek and shiny.

Black women's incredible contributions have been largely overlooked in modern society, even though they were able to make them against all odds. After the Civil War, it was nearly impossible for African-American women to be accepted to universities, take jobs in STEM, or be granted patents for their creations; intersectional discrimination kept many women from being taken seriously as inventors and entrepreneurs. Despite those hurdles, black women were able to fight for patents and, in many cases, sell their inventions to the masses. Keep reading for 16 things that wouldn't exist without the brain of a black woman.

I'm a Member of the "Mass Shooting Generation," and I'm Determined to Make a Change

At 18, I don't really remember the Sept. 11 attacks. I was less than a year old, after all. I learned about it later in school, but when parents and teachers describe that day, they talk about how it was this horrific wake-up call - a day when innocence was broken and Americans' sense of safety was forever shaken. I might not remember that day, but as a member of the "mass shooting generation," I know that feeling well, so I wasn't surprised when I read an article that called school shootings my generation's 9/11.

Shoes representing the 7,000 children killed by gun violence since the Sandy Hook school shooting are displayed in a silent protest at the US Capital in March 2018.

I have never known life free of gun violence. According to The Washington Post's recent analysis, more than 4.1 million students like me endured at least one lockdown during the 2017-2018 school year. We practice drills that may keep us safe, knowing that a shooting could come at any moment. This fear isn't unfounded. We grew up knowing that movie theaters, schools, and even our homes could become the sites of horrible tragedies.

Gun violence is the second leading cause of death for American children overall. Among black children and teens, it is the leading cause of death. This is a uniquely American crisis. Young adults age 15 to 24 in the US are 23 times more likely to be killed by guns compared to other high-income countries.

It is an unbearable reality. And it's one many of us are determined to end. A recent survey said that 68 percent of young people say school shootings are the most important issue facing the United States. That shouldn't be shocking - we live in constant fear that our school or community may be next.

This reality has essentially forced many of us to get political. When you feel your very life is under threat for simply getting up and going to high school, it's hard to just sit on the sidelines. It's motivating us at school, at home, and, last November, at the ballot box. It's the reason young people doubled our 2014 midterm turnout in 2018.

Before the shooting in Parkland, FL, I'd been concerned about gun violence, but I didn't know how I could make a difference. After Parkland, I jumped into this movement by founding a Students Demand Action For Gun Sense in America chapter in my community. Weeks later, there was a shooting at Santa Fe High School, barely an hour from where I live just outside of Houston. The Santa Fe shooting happened just 24 hours after my school had gone through a lockdown - thankfully a false alarm - but further enforcing just how common all of this is and motivating me to stop this from becoming our new normal.

So many of my classmates got involved with Students Demand Action after the Santa Fe shooting. We've already gone to our statehouse to advocate for stronger gun laws, and we're just getting started.

My generation will have to live with the decisions made by our elected officials for decades to come. That's why we rallied to support candidates committed to gun safety last year. We successfully paved the way for progress, and now it's time to push Congress to pass bipartisan legislation introduced this month to require background checks on all gun sales. The proposal is supported by 85 percent of Americans, including 79 percent of Republicans. It's also long overdue.

The background check system was established over 25 years ago, and the world has changed a lot since then. Loopholes in the system have turned the internet into one big gun show, without requiring any checks to see if a buyer has a criminal history or is otherwise prohibited from owning guns.

The proposed legislation would close the background check loophole. This is a critical step to preventing gun violence in our schools and communities. You can contact your representatives and tell them to support this life-saving legislation by texting CHECKS to 644-33.

Every day at school, I worry about a shooting. We have to act now so that students who come after us don't have to live in this constant state of fear. Every student should get involved - before it's your community that's directly affected.

Annika Gallaway is a high school senior and leader of the Montgomery County Texas chapter of Students Demand Action.

100 Matching Tattoos For Couples Who Are in It to Win It

Couples' tattoos can be pretty hit or miss. We've seen corresponding full-body tattoos that form torso-sized hearts and questionable ink with indiscernible meanings. And then there's always the issue of a potential breakup. Do you get a major laser-removal job, try to make it into something else, or stick with it longer than you stuck with the relationship? Still, sometimes you get the cool couple with amazing ink ideas and who totally nail their matching tattoos. Here is some adorable body art that proves love is literally forever. We hope!

Who Is Running For President in 2020?

Donald Trump has barely completed his second year in office, but presidential hopefuls from all parties are already lining up to run for office in 2020. While only a handful of political players have officially launched presidential campaigns, the signs that someone is running - serious fundraising, visiting battleground states, making political appearances, releasing a book, etc. - often make ambitions fairly clear well before they're announced.

So who might President Trump (if he is, in fact, the GOP's candidate in 2020) face in less than two years? While no Republicans have publicly waged a campaign to unseat the current president, several Democrats - and one Independent - have already officially announced their intention to run against him or launched serious "exploratory committees" to gear up for a run. Here's a look at the politicians who are running for commander in chief in 2020.

Why I'm So Glad That I Got Dumped on Valentine's Day

On Valentine's Day, it's common to expect a dozen roses, a box filled with gooey chocolate, or a night out at a swanky restaurant, where you can load up on your favorite bubbly and fine dining cuisine. What you might not expect to happen is having the person you're deeply in love with look you in the eye and break up with you on what is known as the most love-filled day of the year. It happened to me.

The first boyfriend I ever had broke up with me on the second Valentine's Day we ever spent together. He came over that morning, with flowers I could tell he picked up last-minute at the grocery store. They were sad-looking and the petals were wilting, much like the expression on his face when he walked in the door. He sat down and I stood because I could tell something was wrong, and when something is wrong, I like to stand. It helps me process my emotions better, as it allows the energy to flow through my body, rather than come right out of my eyes and nose in the form of tears and snot.

Within five minutes, we went from being madly in love to taking the first step toward becoming distant strangers. He told me he didn't love me anymore. He told me there was someone else. He told me he wanted to wait to break up until after Valentine's Day, but he figured in the end, it was just a day, so why not just get it over with.

I got the whole "sad ending of a love story" scene over with too. I asked him to leave. I asked him to leave the flowers. They were orange and yellow and I liked the way they slumped over.

It was terrible at the time, but surprisingly, that feeling didn't last. Months after the moment happened, it became something I laughed about when out with friends and something that taught me more lessons than any other love situation I had ever been in taught me before. These are three lessons I learned after getting dumped on Valentine's Day.

It Changed the Way I Looked at the 14th of February

Getting broken up with on Valentine's Day didn't make me roll my eyes at the holiday. It made me appreciate it even more. It's a day that shouldn't be spent with just one person. If you have a lot of people in your life you love and adore, make plans to be with them during the holiday too. I used to think it was just a day for romance with the person you were dating, but really it's more for celebration, even if that means you ditch the candlelit dinner for a night at home with a crew of the people who love you all year long.

It Made Me More Aware of Red Flags

When my relationship ended abruptly on Valentine's Day a few years ago, I was at first really surprised. But then I started opening my eyes to all the things that were wrong, all the red flags that I ignored. My boyfriend at the time didn't want to ever be around my friends, he was very protective of me touching his phone or using it, and he would cancel plans a lot without giving me any reason. I had funny feelings along the way, but I kept them buried because I didn't want the relationship to end. Getting broken up with on a day like Valentine's Day made me realize that I don't deserve to just go with the flow in a relationship. If I feel like something is wrong, I have to have the courage to acknowledge it.

It Taught Me a Lesson in Self-Love

One of the biggest and best lessons I learned from getting dumped on V-Day is that on the 14th of February, no matter who you are with or what you are planning to do that day, you should do something for yourself. Take yourself out for a spa treatment, go eat your favorite lunch, take your favorite workout class, or treat yourself to an afternoon shopping. Whatever your idea of self-love is, make sure you dive into it on the day of love this year, and every year, no matter what.
