We Out Here: An Open Letter From POPSUGAR Editors
It is both a thrilling and frightening time to be a black woman. While we're running for office, smashing box office records, writing Great American Novels, and shaping the culture, we are also navigating a world in which we're still being undervalued, underpaid, and underappreciated. In the midst of that, though, is community - black women coming together on the internet and IRL to hold space and fix one another's crowns. Whether we're hyping one another up on the 'gram or taking it offline for a few intentional breaths, one thing is clear: if no one else has us, we'll always have each other.
With that in mind, POPSUGAR is celebrating the breadth and diversity of black women by creating a space for you - and us - to be seen. We Out Here is a place where you will discover everything from the best black-hosted podcasts to accompany your morning commute to beauty brands that give back and how to find a therapist who has your best interest at heart and manage your mental health (because that's super important, too). We recognize the triumphs and the heartbreaks because, for better or worse, we win and lose together. Not only are we out here, but we're not going anywhere, either.
With love,
Tembe Denton-Hurst, Britt Stephens, Meki Pierre, Brea Cubit, Danielle Jackson, Tamara Pridgett, and Maya Berry

Aquaman and Mera Say Their "I Dos" on the Beach in This Steamy, Sparkling Wedding Shoot
Move over, Ariel and Eric! Aquaman and Mera are about to dethrone the Disney couple with this dazzlingly romantic beach wedding. The two characters have electric chemistry on the big screen in the recent adaptation, and it certainly transferred into this photo shoot that was put together by Cristina of Hermosa Weddings and Events at the Salinas River State Beach in Moss Landing, CA.
"Many DC elements related to Aquaman and his alter ego Arthur Curry were incorporated throughout the design," Cristina said. "The entire design revolved around the colors orange and green, since Aquaman's costume in the DC comic books is orange and green." She also drew upon the sea for inspiration as an ode to Aquaman and Mera's underwater home of Atlantis. The table is a treasure chest draped with linen resembling golden sand and decorated with delicate glass charger plates shaped in the form of shells with elegant turquoise wine glasses. And take a closer look at those place cards . . . some of the names might look familiar if you are a fan of the DC universe. From the sparkling decor details to the couple's steamy sunset ocean shots, take in all the stunning photos of this fantastical beach wedding now!
7 Signs You're in Love With a Liar
My ex-fiancé was a Navy Seal who sometimes worked with the CIA. He met his first wife when he rescued her when she was kidnapped in Iran. He had been held hostage in China. He often took off for far-flung locations, on "secret missions" that he would tell me about when there was "a secure line." Whenever I questioned him about anything - which was often - he went on the offense, attacking my integrity and my inability to trust.
"You interrogate!" he'd bark. "You can't have a relationship without trust."
He was right. You can't. And after a year of beating myself up for being suspicious and cynical, I broke up with him. I couldn't live without knowing what was real and what wasn't. Still, for almost a year and a half, I blamed myself for ruining the best thing that had ever happened to me
I got over that when he was convicted of writing fraudulent prescriptions for Vicodin, among other drugs. My name - along with family members, ex-colleagues, and fictitious people - was among the names he falsified.
I can't tell you how elated I felt when he was sentenced to two years in jail. I'd been right all along! He was a liar!
Still, the question on everyone's mind - including my own - was whether there had been signs, and if I'd missed them.
And the answer is yes.
A large part of the reason I wasn't sure what was going on was because he mixed fact with fiction. He'd never been a Navy Seal, didn't work for the CIA, had never been held hostage in China. His ex-wife had never set foot in Iran. (I also didn't know about the wife before her - or that he was engaged to another woman when he was engaged to me.)
On the other hand, he really was a doctor, was in the Navy, did work in the Pentagon, and was opening up a hospital for kids with cancer in Iraq and Afghanistan.
There was also this: we all see what we want to see, and we believe what we want to see - especially in love. (Hence the phrase "blinded by love.")
Most of us don't live our lives anticipating exploitation. Even when there's actual evidence to the contrary, we give the other person the benefit of the doubt. We're wired to believe that people are inherently good, primarily because society couldn't function without that default. If we all operated in isolation, we would achieve very little, as individuals and as a species.
Trust is de rigueur in society. Likewise in intimate relationships. It makes sense: If we don't trust, we might not have sex. If we don't have sex, the species doesn't continue. And then where would we be?
Finally, the sad reality is that our talent for detecting deception with anyone - friend, foe, lover, family member, or stranger - is no better than a roll of the dice. In fact, the closer you are to someone, the more likely you are to believe them, because your blinders are in place and securely fastened. And unlike Pinocchio, there's no quickly growing protuberance to indicate we're lying.
Still, there are some ways to tell if you're being manipulated and lied to, which I learned when I was researching my book Duped: Double Lives, False Identities, and the Con Man I Almost Married.
1. They're charming.
Dutch researcher Aldert Vrij compiled a list of 18 characteristics common among good liars. Good liars are manipulative, confident, eloquent, quick-witted, able to balance guilt and fear, and - yes - hot. The better looking you are, the more you can get away with.
Yes. We're a shallow bunch.
2. You can't verify anything they say.
You ask to see photos or receipts, you want to meet their friends and family, but something always gets in the way and it never materializes. Although they promise you will, something always gets in the way. You know why? Because they're lying!
3. They go on the offense when you question them.
For years, Lance Armstrong was accused of doping. And any time someone challenged him, there was something wrong with them, not him. Ditto for Richard Nixon, Donald Trump, Bill Clinton, Bill O'Reilly, and Harvey Weinstein, all of whom, when faced with clear evidence that they were misbehaving, went after their accusers. They tell us the sky is purple and make us think there's something wrong with us for believing it's blue. When we dare to challenge them, we're the ones with the problem.
4. They're really good storytellers.
In an experiment, Stanford communications professor Jeff Hancock and his research team paid people to write fake reviews of a hotel in New York. Some of the reviewers had really stayed there; others had never set foot in the place.
The liars, they found, focused on narrative. "They make up a story: Who? And what happened? And that's what happened here," Hancock said in a 2012 Ted Talk. "Our fake reviewers talked about who they were with and what they were doing. They also used the first-person singular, 'I,' way more than the people that actually stayed there. They were inserting themselves into the hotel review, kind of trying to convince you they were there."
Those who really had been at the hotel were more concerned with "spatial information": the size of the bathroom, or how close the hotel was from a shopping center.
What Hancock deduced is that our language changes based on the type of lie we're emitting and our motivations for telling it. When being questioned in person, for example, liars in Hancock's study tended to use fewer first-person singular words, even though they opted for first-person singular more often in their fake reviews.
"Our argument is that it depends on what the liar is trying to accomplish, motivation, and how that affects them psychologically," Hancock told me. "The fake reviewer is inserting the self into their story to make it sound more credible, while the liars in the interview may be distancing themselves from the event in question. This has different effects on first-person singular."
5. They use phrases like "Not that I can remember" or "To the best of my knowledge."
If someone is "swearing to god" emphatically, parroting your words, or telling you what a good question you're asking, that usually means they're stalling for time to come up with an acceptable response. They could also be trying to throw you off their scent, distract you, or curry favor by padding your ego.
That's because nonanswer statements give someone time to formulate a better answer or to search for wiggle room to squirm their way out of the question. "People don't realize the distinction between 'I wouldn't do something' versus 'I didn't do something,'" said Phil Houston, coauthor of Spy the Lie. "It creates a real epiphany for them."
6. They use qualifying words.
"Basically," "frankly," "honestly," "fundamentally," "usually," and, of course, "believe me" - Donald Trump's favorite - are red flags. So are qualifying statements like "Trust me," "I'm a good person," and "I'm an honest person."
According to Houston, what you really want to look for are clusters of actions. On its own, for example, rubbing your eye means nothing; a speck of dust could have camped there. But combine that with crossing and uncrossing your arms, rolling your eyes to the heavens above, clearing your throat, shielding your mouth or eyes, adjusting your clothes or hair, inspecting your nails, or saying the word "yes" while shaking your head "no," and there's a pretty good chance someone's not telling the truth. But the clusters must occur in the first five seconds of your interaction, when the liar in question hasn't yet had time to prepare false statements.
Now, none of this is easy. That's why liars get one over on so many of us. You have to look and listen at the same time, and most of us have difficulty doing either one of these things well.
Even experts have a hard time. In a meta-analysis of over 200 studies, psychologist Charles F. Bond and lying researcher Bella DePaulo concluded that people could only spot a liar 47 percent of the time. Experienced job interviewers didn't fare any better (52 percent) when trying to distinguish between candidates who lied about their career histories and those who didn't.
Which brings us to number seven.
7. Whenever possible, get hard evidence.
The only reliable way to detect deception is to have tangible proof: Texts. Emails. Phone records. Bank accounts. Video footage. Your own eyeballs.
Let's imagine that the leader of a major first-world power proclaims that more people showed up to his inauguration than to any other inauguration in the history of presidential elections. If there weren't actual statistics proving otherwise, he could go unchallenged. And even so, he still might launch a full-frontal attack. (See number three, above!) But at least you'll have the goods.

These Harry Potter Halloween Wedding Photos Are Riddikulus-ly Amazing
Leave it to a Ravenclaw to pull off one of the most methodically planned Harry Potter weddings we've ever seen. On Oct. 27, several well-dressed witches and wizards gathered at Chase Court in Baltimore to celebrate the marriage of Meghan Kotlanger and Travis Griffin, two self-proclaimed "gryffindorks" whose Harry Potter-themed Halloween wedding was something straight out of the Mirror of Erised. After five months of planning and crafting, this happy couple pulled out all the stops, giving 65 of their closest muggle friends and family a glimpse into the wizarding world.
The couple, who met on MySpace in 2008, became engaged in November 2016 and immediately took on a two-year endeavor to plan a wedding that would make Minerva McGonagall proud. Travis Griffin is (no surprise) a Gryffindor, while Meghan is a Ravenclaw, which came in handy when she was putting together all 48 pages of their wedding production book. What started out as a quick Pinterest search of wedding ideas for the bride-to-be quickly transformed into a handcrafted Harry Potter paradise. "We made a Monster Book of Monsters (a four-week endeavor), a PVC pipe photo booth, a hollowed-out Half Blood Prince book to hold the rings, all of the signage, a mandrake, a dragon egg, flying keys, a dementor, chicken wire ghosts, silhouette lanterns . . . and even a smoking pensieve," Meghan told POPSUGAR.
"We're both October babies and love everything Halloween. We also know that Oct. 1 is the start of Harry Potter season, so we knew it had to be a Hallowedding to represent everything we love about October," Meghan said. She added that her main goal in planning the wedding was to make it "feel less like a wedding with Harry Potter incorporated and more like Harry Potter with a wedding incorporated." And it certainly looks like this Ravenclaw succeeded if these enchanting wedding pics are anything to go by.
Guests (who were urged to arrive via Floo Network) were asked to show their Hogwarts pride by wearing their house colors to the ceremony, and a link to a "Mandatory Sorting Hat Quiz" was provided on the couple's wedding site for anyone who was still torn between their magical allegiances. Personalized LED wands were even provided for each guest to practice their charms and accio parts of the Great Feast their way - including an assortment of Dragon Deviled Eggs, Golden Snitches, "Firewhiskey," and Amortentia from a large cauldron. Short of delivering their wedding invites via owl, the couple managed to squeeze almost every Harry Potter detail imaginable into their special day.
The happy couple's Unbreakable Vows were officiated by none other than Professor Dumbledore himself (or, for muggles, Meghan's uncle Scott), who had the entire wedding party crying from laughter during the ceremony when he lost his wizard hat not one, but three times. And the reception afterwards was just as enjoyable, with mini Herbology, Potions, and Divination classrooms set up for guests who preferred studying to dancing (aka the Hermiones) and Triwizard Tournament games set up in the library (Room of Requirement).
Unlike Bill Weasley and Fleur Delacour's wedding - which was unexpectedly invaded by a swarm of Death Eaters - Meghan and Travis's wedding was all pumpkin juice and smiles as guests kissed (plastic) singing toads, indulged in pumpkin pasties, and got their Yule Ball on to the tunes of DJ Potter (aka DJ Riddikulus). One of the night's hits even included DJ Potter's own personal mix "99 Problems, but a Snitch Ain't One."
The wedding, which ended at 9 3/4 o'clock, was a truly magical occasion. And the newly married "gryffindorks" also followed up with a Harry Potter-themed honeymoon! Meghan and Travis trekked all over Europe - including Germany, Poland, Belgium, Switzerland, France, and London. "Our fantastic bookends involved attending our very first LARP at the College of Wizardry in Poland – seriously one of the most wonderful and fulfilling experiences of our lives – and seeing Harry Potter and the Cursed Child in London," Meghan said.
For more info on planning your own wedding in the wizarding world, check out Meghan and Travis's wedding site - created by the bride herself - and take a look at these photos for more details on their Unbreakable Vow wedding.

My Kids Aren't That Into Disney, but We Still Go Because I Love It
Whenever a big school break is on the horizon, I usually come up with a plan to try to make a Disney vacation happen. And while my kids used to always love the idea, they've recently started having other interests that are very far outside Mickey, Minnie, and the rest of the crew. "Can we go to Legoland instead?" my 6-year-old will ask. After hearing their "protests" I immediately ask myself, "What is wrong with my kids?!" I mean, how can they not want to go to Disney at all times?
But then it got me thinking. What is it about Disneyland that I love so much that every other trip pales in comparison? I suppose Disneyland reminds me of my childhood, a happier time when I had no cares in the world. Now, when I visit Disneyland as an adult, I find myself in that same state of euphoria. At Disneyland, there are no work deadlines to meet, no bills to be paid, and no cleaning to be done. And when there's so many yummy Disney treats to enjoy, I'm not worried about my waistline, either. In the park, I truly embrace the Hakuna Matata philosophy. Being at Disneyland is a great escape from reality, and as a stressed out mother of two, I need that.
Of course, my family has vacationed at other kid-friendly places, including Legoland, and while switching it up is awesome, Disneyland is still the only place that sparks real joy and magic for me. As soon as I hear that tweet noise when I enter the gates (you know the one), I'm captivated by the beauty, fantasy, and wonder. When I walk down Main Street USA, smell that delicious vanilla aroma, and catch sight of the breathtaking view of the castle, I'm overcome with excitement. The amazing part is that the feeling stays with me throughout the entire vacation. Just like me, Disneyland has changed throughout the years - it's grown and adapted while never losing its enchantment and charm. Walt Disney said it best at Disneyland's grand opening when he declared, "Disneyland will never be completed, as long as there is imagination left in the world."
Although my kids may have initially preferred a new destination for our family vacation, they never regret coming to Disney once we're there. They scream their heads off as we plummet down Splash Mountain, squeal with delight at the sight of their favorite Disney princess strolling through Fantasyland, and savor every delicious bite of Disney's famous churros. By the end of the trip, they are whining that they don't want their fun vacation to end. Me too, babies. Me too.
I maintain my sense of wonder, and I have Disneyland to thank for that. My kids may not be as obsessed as I am, but they still have the best time. We create such special memories as a family, and while we'll definitely travel to other places, I want to try to keep Disneyland as a yearly tradition. Because to me, Disneyland is and always will be "the happiest place on Earth."
Passionate, Playful, and Perfectly Pretty - Every Wedding Needs a Touch of Pink

Farrah looked radiant in a mermaid wedding gown with lace detailing and a sweetheart neckline. She completed the look with soft makeup and a pair of classic satin Manolo Blahnik heels. She arrived to the venue in a white Rolls-Royce with red interiors that matched her bold red lip. Marcus looked sharp in a classic black tuxedo, complete with a large smile on his face. 15 Romantic Minimoon Destinations For After the I Dos
If boarding a plane to embark on your dream honeymoon the day after you say "I do" is simply not within the realm of possibilities, you're not alone. Many couples are pushing back their post-nuptial escapes for a number of reasons: they can't take the time off work, they want to wait until the weather is better, or they want to save a little more money before jet-setting to the Hawaiian coast or Tuscan hills.
If it makes sense to temporarily put off your honeymoon for a bit, that doesn't mean you have to go back to real life right away. Min-moons are becoming increasingly popular with millennial couples; it's a romantic getaway immediately following the big day that tends to be shorter, closer to home, and more affordable. Think of it as a honeymoon appetizer that gives you and your new spouse the chance to get away and celebrate. Here's Why You Can Basically Count on a Third Happy Death Day Movie
When you consider the fact that Happy Death Day was basically an instant hit that quickly earned a second movie, it's easy to see how the film's sequel, Happy Death Day 2U, is set up for success. After all, the insane trailer promises more insane deaths, plenty of laughs, and more than a few scares. All things considered, it's hard to imagine a timeline (ha) in which writer-director Christopher Landon doesn't get the chance to make a third movie. You may think I'm getting ahead of myself, and on some level, you'd be right. But that's only because Universal hasn't officially signed off on a trilogy. That said, there are a few indicators that are giving us a lot of hope.
The main reason we're pretty confident about a third movie is, well, Landon wants to make one. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the creator of the universe said he has a "really bonkers" idea for the third go-round, and that he'd always envisioned this as a trilogy. POPSUGAR was also lucky enough to snag an interview with star Jessica Rothe, who reiterated that Landon had shared an insane final idea with her. "I think he has the whole idea in his head, but he's keeping it close to the chest," Rothe said with a laugh. She also shared an interesting premise idea from her costar Israel Broussard. "The thing that I think is really fun that doesn't give away anything, but Israel said yesterday, is he was like, 'Well, it seems to me there's an obvious progression: Movie one: Tree saves herself. Movie two: Tree saves her friends. Movie three: Tree saves the world?' So I actually have no idea if that's it, but I'm gunning for that. That's my superhero movie."
For the record, though, Rothe is 100 percent down to make a third film. In fact, she may be just as enthusiastic as the director himself. "All I know is, whatever I'm expecting, it will be completely different from anything I could ever imagine," she told us. "I also know and trust that it will be the appropriate bookend to this wonderful journey we've gone on with these crazy people." But first, let's all make Happy Death Day 2U a hit, right? See the movie so we can watch the epic conclusion to this absolutely wild ride.
Somehow I Love Pink Even More For Revealing She Slashed Carey Hart's Tires on Thanksgiving
Pink has been giving us a lot of reasons to be even more obsessed with her lately. Not only did she recently receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, but she also blew everyone away at Dolly Parton's tribute show with a powerful rendition of "Jolene." And now, she's making us belly laugh with some funny anecdotes about her personal life.
In the segment "Burning Questions" on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, the 39-year-old singer answered a number of random queries, and things took a hilariously dark turn when Ellen asked, "What's the dumbest way you've hurt yourself?" Without giving it a second thought, Pink responded, "Slashing tires." She then explained that Carey Hart, her husband of 13 years, apparently did something that set her off on Thanksgiving, and she decided to take it out on his car. "The holidays are stressful!" she said. In the clip above, watch her explain the incident and how she hurt herself while attempting to wreck her beau's wheels.

Joe Goldberg isn't finished wreaking havoc just yet! After a dramatic first season on Lifetime, You is moving to Netflix for season two. While Penn Badgley will be back as the murderous book store manager, there are a few new stars joining the show, including a brand-new leading lady (RIP, Beck). See the new cast (and possibly Joe's next victims) ahead.
Ja Rule Just Threatened to Have Another Fyre Festival, Because We Haven't Suffered Enough
When a movie receives terrible reviews, typically it doesn't get green-lighted for a sequel. That's why we were never tortured by Gigli 2, or a follow-up to The Book of Henry. But apparently Ja Rule either doesn't believe in this logical process, or is out of his damn mind (or both), because he recently teased a second installment of the worst "luxury" music festival that never was: Fyre Fest.
As a reminder, festival-goers - some of whom had paid thousands for their tickets - arrived at the festival site in the Bahamas and discovered a barren, unorganized, trash-covered space strewn with FEMA tents that were leftover from the devastation of Hurricane Michael. The doomed event was so bad that it not only inspired two documentaries about the whole disaster but also destroyed the livelihoods of innocent bystanders and landed the festival's chief fraudster, Billy McFarland, in prison.
Ja Rule, who collaborated on Fyre Fest with McFarland, clearly hasn't learned his lesson. While speaking to TMZ, the rapper said that he's going to plan a second, rebranded iteration of the event, which he claims will be "iconic." Sure, Jan!
"I'm not ashamed of Fyre at all. Because man, the idea, it was brilliant," he said. "It was f*cking beyond brilliant. It was amazing, but it wasn't what I dreamed it of being and what I envisioned of it being and what I wanted it to be. It wasn't done properly."
Will there be more cheese sandwiches? How about kids being locked in an airport for hours on end without water or bathrooms? And will the Fyre Fest MVP, event planner Andy King, be involved?! Ja Rule neglected to say. However, he assured TMZ that it would, again, be "iconic."
"It's not funny to me, It's heartbreaking to me. It's something that I wanted to be special and amazing; it didn't turn out that way. In the midst of chaos, there's opportunity," he attempted to explain. "It is the most iconic festival that never was. I have plans to create the iconic festival, but you didn't hear that from me."
Welp. If there's a patron saint of music festivals, let us pray that they don't allow this to happen. (Or do - I could honestly watch a billion more Fyre Festival documentaries.)
Brian Littrell and His Wife, Leighanne, Have This BSB Song to Thank For Their Romance
The Backstreet Boys are known for their hit love songs, but one of them holds special meaning for Brian Littrell. The singer actually met his wife, Leighanne, on the set of the "As Long as You Love Me" music video in 1997. Just like the song goes, "it seems like [they were] meant to be" because they began dating shortly after.
On Christmas Eve in 1999, Brian proposed, and the two tied the knot in September 2000 in Atlanta. In November 2002, the couple welcomed their first child together, a son named Baylee. When Brian and Leighanne aren't showing their love on the red carpet, they're giving glimpses of their family of three on social media. See some of their cutest moments ahead!
Don't Worry: Taylor Schilling Is Just as Horrified as You Are About The Prodigy's Dog Scene
Having spent six years playing Piper Kerman on Orange Is the New Black, it should surprise no one that Taylor Schilling has experienced her fair share of unpleasant moments on screen. For instance, as a Litchfield inmate, she has her teeth shattered, finds herself starting a used panties business, and is held down while getting a swastika burned into her arm. And yet much of that pales in comparison to what Schilling's character must endure in The Prodigy.
In the Nicholas McCarthy-directed horror film, the Golden Globe- and Emmy-nominated actress plays Sarah, a mother whose genius-level young son, Miles (It's Jackson Robert Scott), begins to exhibit disturbing behavior the older he gets. Is he suffering from some sort of mental disorder? Or is something more sinister at work, like a demonic possession? Sarah struggles with her instinct to love and protect her son while also fearing for her and her husband's safety, encountering every mother's worst nightmare as she gets pulled deeper and deeper into the mystery of what, exactly, is up with Miles.
What results is an intensely creepy film, with an ending that legitimately made my jaw pop open in surprise. I hopped on the phone with Schilling herself to discuss it all, from the final shocking twist to what kind of roles might be next for her when OITNB ends for good this year.
Warning: spoilers for a key twist in The Prodigy are discussed ahead, so don't read any further if you want to keep that a surprise.
POPSUGAR: What really struck me while watching the film is that the plot is every mother's worst nightmare. But that being said, regardless of whether or not you have kids, the story is still effectively chilling, especially for women. I'm wondering what your first impression was after reading the script and seeing the lengths Sarah has to go to for her son.
Taylor Schilling: I was blown away by this character, and by the time I finished the script, particularly with the turns that Sarah takes . . . at the end, she's just trying to save her son. It really fooled me. It blew me away.
PS: That's actually interesting because I, myself, was a little surprised at the ending, when Sarah decides to kill the serial killer's lone survivor. What was your perspective on that? Why do you think Sarah decides to do what she does?
TS: Well, I think she's fighting for her son, and she feels a tremendous amount of responsibility for her child. And the intensity of the circumstances aren't something that everyone can relate to, but her instinct to be her son's guardian and do whatever it takes to make sure that he's safe and that he blossoms in the world is really what I think a lot of parents can relate to. I think she just goes all the way, and I think, in real time, the character Sarah is learning that there are parts of herself that she didn't know existed. That there's this ferocious fighter inside of her, and she's willing to do whatever it takes no matter what anybody else thinks.
PS: Did you anticipate that ending at all when you were first reading the script? Because I was genuinely surprised.
TS: What did it seem like to you while watching it?
PS: By the time that she gets to the hospital and sees her husband near death and leans down to whisper, "I'm going to fix this" or "I'm going to save our son" or whatever the line is, I assumed she'd finally made up her mind to kill Miles. Like that would be her way of "saving" everyone. Even though she'd discovered those newspaper clippings about the survivor in his bedroom, I still wasn't expecting things to get that dark. Although I guess a mother killing her son is pretty dark.
TS: Yeah, [the ending] really kind of blew me away, too. The choices that she made and is making throughout are . . . yeah, they're really something else.
PS: The evil kid horror genre has definitely been done before in a few ways, like in The Omen and Bad Seed, but this time I thought it was kind of fresh, I guess in a morbid way, how the serial killer comes to possess Miles. And seeing adorable Jackson Robert Scott committing all these heinous things is a trip. Was it hard for you when you were filming to see Jackson as truly scary?
TS: No, because I think he's so good at taking the twists that he needs to take. He's just a really good actor. So, he really did his job. He really is spectacular and kind of inspiring in that he can shift modes so quickly and so effortlessly. That [after a scary scene] he can just start playing. He's a great kid.
PS: Miles has to say some pretty brutal, unsavory stuff, especially in that scene when he's in the psychiatrist's office. It's kind of wild to hear that coming out of a little kid's mouth. What was it like doing those kinds of scenes with him?
TS: You know, some of that stuff . . . I was actually horrified when I met him, because I'd read the script and I knew that this child was going to have to say those things. I was preemptively very concerned for him, and this entire operation. I was concerned for everybody involved! [Laughs] But I think, if I'm not mistaken, he actually never said those words.
PS: I was wondering.
TS: I'm pretty sure they [dubbed] those lines in. He would get alternate sides on those days. And he'd be like, [imitates an annoyed little kid voice] "I know I have special sides. Let me see. Let me see." So he knew what was going on, but he didn't have [those sides]. And I think they had somebody else [dub] the stuff in later.
PS: In addition to all the creepy dialogue, there are also some really, really gruesome moments. I, personally, am still processing the dog scene.
TS: Oh, I know. I'm with you. I know. It's awful. It was brutal.
PS: So acting with a dead dog is as bad as it seems?
TS: Yes, it was awful. It was horrible. Yeah, it was horrible the day that I . . . I mean, there was one day that I didn't know [that scene] was happening. I walked in the makeup trailer and there was this mass of prosthetic. I didn't understand it was the prosthetic of a dead dog. A dog with blood on it. And it looked like a real dead dog in the makeup trailer! It was horrible. That was what was very upsetting. That was very scary.
PS: Oh my God. I can't imagine.
TS: It was horrible.
PS: As a viewer, it's always so nice to see an actor that you know and love from one thing - in this case, I've been watching you for six years on Orange Is the New Black - inhabiting a totally different character than usual. Was it exciting for you as an actress to do something other than playing Piper?
"I'm so excited to be doing something different. It's thrilling to me."
TS: Thank you so much. I'm so excited to be doing something different. It's thrilling to me. And yeah, that's what I'm looking for. Not necessarily things that are diametrically opposed for the purpose of being opposed to Piper, but different than Piper. Just stories that I'm excited about telling and directors that I want to work with and characters that seem interesting. Yeah, that's what I'm after.
PS: Is there a freedom - bittersweet, I'm sure - that comes with knowing that Orange Is the New Black is going to end and you'll have time for tons of other things in the future?
TS: Yeah. It's really exciting. It feels like the end of an era, like graduating from school or something akin to that. It's really a big deal.
PS: Yeah, when I was preparing for this interview, I actually was thinking to myself how the world is so different from when Orange first premiered to now. It's exciting, as a fan of the show, to know everyone on the cast is going to go out and be in all these new, wonderful projects. Is that something you guys have discussed at all yourselves?
TS: Yeah. What we have discussed and what I do know is that everybody is so excited about the possibilities that are in front of us. This show has given all of us so many opportunities and been such an incredible platform. But even with Natasha [Lyonne] going off and doing Russian Doll, or . . . everyone is able to spread their wings a bit now. It's very exciting.
PS: Now that you've done this horror film, is there anything in particular that you would want to do next? Whether it's a rom-com or another horror film or going on Broadway . . . anything like that?
TS: I think I'm just looking for a good story. I think I'm looking for the characters that I'm interested in playing, and projects that fit, and just surrounding myself with people that I love.
PS: Do you ever look for anything in particular about a potential film or TV show when you're reading a new script?
TS: The character and the journey. And now more than ever, I'm excited to be working with really great people. That's a part of what I'm looking for. I'm aiming for things in which I can express myself and parts of myself that people may not have seen before. There's a lot of work that I feel I have left to do as an actor. And I'm excited for the opportunity to explore different options, different opportunities.
Bruno Mars and Cardi B's Sexy New Song Will Have You Cranking the AC in the Middle of Winter
Thanks to Cardi B and Bruno Mars's latest collaboration, my electric bill is going to be a little higher this month. Why? Because every time I listen to the new track, "Please Me," I find myself having to crank the AC up a little higher despite the fact that it's negative-five degrees outside where I live. But honestly? I'm fine with it.
The incredibly sexy new song is the pair's second collaboration after blessing us with "Finesse" early last year. And it's a bop, unquestionably. With lyrics like "Please me, baby / Turn around and just tease me, baby" and "Booty so round / booty so soft / Bet you wanna smack it again," it's no surprise Mars and Cardi dropped the single on Valentine's Day. (For what it's worth, Cardi celebrated the song's release by posting a photo of her soaking in a rose petal-filled bathtub, as you do.)
Listen to "Please Me" ahead, then keep reading to see how fans are reacting to the song so far (spoiler alert: we're all in R&B heaven).
Candace Returns, Joe Moves to LA, and More Things to Expect From You's Second Season
Warning: this post obviously contains You season one spoilers.
If you happened to watch Caroline Kepnes's bestselling thriller You on Lifetime before it moved to Netflix, you're probably waiting with bated breath for season two. Now that Beck (Elizabeth Lail) is dead and Candace (Ambyr Childers) has mysteriously returned and wants to talk to Joe (Penn Badgley) about "some unfinished business," we have so many unanswered questions. Like, where was Candace this whole time? Did Joe kill her brother? What's going to happen to Paco? Will Dr. Nicky be released from prison? We NEED answers! Here's everything we know so far about season two.
Meet Lashana Lynch, the Captain Marvel Star You're About to Fall in Love With
As we close in on Marvel's next big release, Captain Marvel, we're slowly uncovering more and more intel about the incredibly powerful superhero. Even in the last couple of months, we've been treated to tons of trailers and special looks, a couple of familiar faces, and one very fuzzy new sidekick. But if the recently released character posters told us anything, it's that Marvel is keeping a secret or two close to the chest. Case in point: the brilliant Lashana Lynch, who plays Maria Rambeau, aka the best friend and copilot of Captain Marvel's human person, Carol Danvers.
In Summer 2018, POPSUGAR visited the LA set of Captain Marvel with a group of other journalists. During our time in the thick of the action, we were treated to an interview with Lynch. The fact that she's joining the Marvel universe is huge; not only is she a fresh face in the superhero world, but she's a pretty recent newcomer in Hollywood, too. And here she is, kicking ass alongside a badass female superhero in one of Marvel's most important releases in the past decade! To introduce you to the rising star, we've scribbled down a handful of fun facts about the character . . . and the delightful woman who plays her.
1. She Plays the Mother of a Well-Known Marvel Comics Character
"I play Maria Rambeau, who is the mother of Monica Rambeau, who we know from the comics," Lynch revealed. In Marvel's official database, Monica Rambeau notably takes the Captain Marvel namesake after she joins the Avengers. Lynch told us during our visit that Monica is only 11 in the film, meaning she likely hasn't quite developed her own superpowers yet. Even so, we can't help but feel like that's a pretty easy bridge to a big-screen Captain Marvel sequel.
The comics don't seem to give a lot of information about Monica's mother, Maria. Luckily, we had Lynch to fill us in: "We are going from the beginning, so we're going from before Carol Danvers got her powers. We have us being set in the mid-'90s, which is nice, because we have lots of flashbacks. You know, memories that we all know and love."
"My character, along with Carol Danvers, is a fighter pilot, so you catch a lot of us being the strong, driven, bold females in the workplace, in a male-oriented environment," Lynch continued. "It's nice to flash back and see that - see how women can really burst through being in that environment and still holding their own, and not having to have a man telling them what to do, where to stand, how to look. And also not be glamorous at work: not having to wear heels, and the pencil skirt, and be on their Ps and Qs, just being a complete badass going to work."
2. Carol's Relationship With Maria Is Actually Very Important
Not only were Maria and Carol best friends as fighter pilots, but they also grew up together! "They were best friends in the beginning. Absolute best friends," she said. "They were in and out of each other's houses. Carol was very close with Monica." Because of that time together, Lynch revealed, they do have a pretty incredible bond. She said they give each other "strength, mainly, and spiritual strength. In order to do the job what we do - and especially with me being an African American female fighter pilot - any other woman just gets you, understands the journey. It gives you enough power [to] just go to work."
3. As a Matter of Fact, Maria Is the Key to Captain Marvel's Reverse Awakening
So, if you're confused about the timeline, here's what I gleaned. Captain Marvel began her life on Earth, living as a human. Eventually, her powers awakened, and she went off into space to fight intergalactic evil and whatnot. She forgets her human past. Then, during the events of the film, she must return to Earth, where she unlocks all these pieces from her backstory that she didn't realize were there.
As it turns out, her pal Maria may very well spark this major change in our hero. "There's a certain energy that you share with your friends that you can't get anywhere else, and she has these flashes of the feeling," Lynch told us. "The feeling of being herself through seeing her friend, the feeling of being at home through being in a home - which is mine - and the feeling of being normal and accepted, able to be herself without being an object - which I think is kind of what happens when she gets her powers." That's a pretty impactful piece of this fragmented puzzle.
4. Maria Will Absolutely Brush Shoulders With Nick Fury
Oh, yes. You're definitely going to witness a team-up of sorts between Carol, Maria, the young Nick Fury, and the fuzzy little Flerken known as Goose. Nick Fury totally factors in majorly; Lynch said he's "there to be Nick Fury, to save and support and make things happen" when Carol Danvers starts to come to terms with her own identity." While we were on set, we witnessed a scene in which Nick, Maria, and Captain Marvel all board an alien spacecraft. That means she's definitely along for the ride and not just stuck in the dark on Earth!
5. Fun Fact: Lynch Auditioned For Black Panther and Almost Got Picked
In the midst of our interview, Lynch revealed that she's a longtime Marvel fan and had made it a goal for herself to get into a Marvel movie. She really had her sights set on Black Panther. "Literally, I was begging my manager to get me in Black Panther. I was in LA and they hadn't started yet, because they were just finishing up on Spider-Man," she recalled. "And I said, but I'm here now, and I could just do a tape. I'll make up sides, and I'll just do an audition, and it'll be great."
By now, the end of the story should be clear. "It didn't happen. I was shooting a series at the time, and sent them the tape, and they loved [it] . . . and then there was an age issue, like, I looked too young for one, and too old for the other, and that didn't happen. I'm really happy, because in the end, Letitia Wright got it, and she is bombastic.
6. Maria's Costume Has a Cute Little Easter Egg
A close look at Lynch's costume revealed a very cute little detail: she wears a necklace that spells "Monica" in gorgeous gold-plated lettering. "That was my idea," Lynch said, glowing. "Yeah, it says Monica, because it's the '90s." How very Carrie Bradshaw of her.
Captain Marvel hits theaters March 8. Is it time yet?!
Um, Happy Death Day Was Originally Supposed to Have a Completely Different Ending
With Happy Death Day 2U finally in theaters, we're running back into the open arms of our favorite badass heroine, Tree Gelbman. This time around, Tree isn't just trying to save herself from certain death, but must also try to save all her friends from an uncertain fate that involves even more gruesome deaths and, yes, plenty of laughs. Ahead of the second film's release, I sat down with star Jessice Rothe to talk about her incredible character and what makes the franchise so special. In that interview, though, I actually learned an absolutely shocking fact about the film that started it all: Tree was supposed to die at the end.
I know, you're like, "Big deal. She dies like 100 times in the whole movie." But I mean Tree initially was supposed to die permanently. Rothe broke it down for me during our little chat. "I make it to Tuesday the 19th. I wake up - it's on the DVD extras. I filmed the scene," Rothe recalled. "I wake up, and everyone's at the hospital with me, my dad's there, I'm super happy, and then Gregory's wife comes in and poisons me because I was sleeping with her husband, and I die." It turns out, test audiences were furious because they had grown so attached to the character. "They were pissed," Rothe continued. "They were like, 'You made us care about this person. You can't do this. We went on this journey. We love her.'"
Can you even imagine? We almost had to watch Tree go through everything only to ultimately fail at the end! Luckily, they decided to reshoot the whole ending, and that's what gave us the heartwarming conclusion we know and love. It's kind of funny, too, because it sounds like this overhaul marked the point where director Christopher Landon got the idea for the sequel. In post-production on the film, he got the familiar lightning bolt, called Rothe, and the rest is history. Now, we might even be getting a third installment! We can't wait to see how it all (potentially) wraps up.
Watch Out, 2019: Meghan Markle Is Just Getting Started
To say that Meghan Markle has had a whirlwind couple of years is a pretty big understatement. She's hit a handful of major milestones since getting engaged to Prince Harry and experienced some pretty huge life events in 2018 alone - all while inspiring her fans, charming humans and animals, and breaking a few rules along the way. Wedding? Check. Pregnancy? In progress. Changing the face of the British royal family forever? Girl, it's been handled.
Meghan has already kicked off 2019 by announcing her royal patronages, hiring a new deputy communications secretary, and making official appearances both solo and with Harry. The couple are also expected to make their widely publicized move to Frogmore Cottage in Windsor soon - before welcoming their first child together in late April - and will be embarking on a royal tour of the US in the Fall. Last year may have been Meghan's introduction to the royal family (as well as the world), but 2019 is when we'll see the Duchess of Sussex rolling up her sleeves and getting down to business. Scroll through to see Meghan's best photos from 2019.
Tom Brady and Gisele Bündchen Rang In Valentine's Day With - What Else? - a Sexy Beach Date
Nearly a decade later, Tom Brady and Gisele Bündchen are clearly still crazy about each other! The couple - who will be ringing in their 10th wedding anniversary on Feb. 26 - recently escaped to Costa Rica for some well-deserved R&R following the New England Patriots quarterback's sixth Super Bowl win. On Valentine's Day, Tom and Gisele celebrated the romantic holiday by soaking up the sun and hitting the beach. The pair shared some sweet PDA as they hugged and kissed. At one point, Gisele was spotted affectionately feeding Tom some fresh papaya. The 38-year-old former supermodel showed off her incredible figure as she frolicked in the sand, while the 41-year-old athlete felt a little more adventurous and caught some waves.
In the midst of their romantic beach date, Tom and Gisele also took a moment to pen heartfelt tributes to each other on Instagram. "My Forever Valentine!!! Te amo tanto amor da minha vida! ❤️," Tom captioned a cuddly photo of the pair. Gisele expressed similar sentiments, posting a snap of the two and writing, "Happy Valentine's day! Te amo! ❤️"
Tom and Gisele first got together in 2006 and have been going strong ever since. They have three beautiful kids between them - Jack, 11, Benjamin, 9, and Vivian, 6 - and their love only seems to get sweeter with time. Happy early anniversary, Gisele and Tom!
Yes, Happy Death Day 2U Has a Postcredits Scene - Here's Why It's a Big Deal
Warning: this post contains spoilers for Happy Death Day 2U!
Ladies and gentlemen, the movie overlords have graciously blessed us with a sequel to 2017's best horror surprise, Happy Death Day. Now that we've got a second go-around, the highly anticipated Happy Death Day 2U is jam-packed with even more creepy baby masks, plenty of gruesome new deaths, and a gripping ride that keeps you guessing and laughing 'til the very end. Speaking of the end, I bet you're wondering about the all-important question that seems to hover over nearly every movie release nowadays: should you stay put after the credits or would it be a waste of time? Allow me to unravel the mystery just for you. And I'll even go so far as to describe it, if that's something you're into.
I have really excellent news about the postcredits situation in Happy Death Day 2U. First of all, there is, indeed, a pretty vital scene that takes place after the credits roll. To clarify, it's more of a "midcredits" scene, because it definitely drops after the credits begin, but there are many more credits afterward as well. So, you can enjoy the bliss of not waiting too long to witness the scene in question and then peacing out right after. As for what happens? I'll put a description underneath this lovely picture, just in case you don't want all the spoilers.
Still here? OK, great. So, before I dive into the postcredits scene, let me do a quick recap of the twist in the movie. Remember how there's a whole shroud of mystery around Tree's journey in the first one? It's all because of some crazy machine these physics students have been working on as a final thesis project. Their goal is to create some kind of effect where time slows down, but it instead throws Tree into a time loop that she can't seem to escape. There are a few more aspects of Happy Death Day 2U that tie into that whole part of the story, but all you really need to know right now is that there's a crazy time-bending machine and that's why Tree lands in this whole predicament in the first place.
At the end of the movie, we learn the government has basically taken custody of this machine, because duh, it's a powerful piece of technology and the government loves getting their grubby hands on powerful things that don't belong to them. In the postcredits scene, the government actually summons the whole group to their top-secret science complex. The group obviously includes Tree, Carter, and Carter's roommate Ryan (one of the students who worked on the machine). They also bring along Ryan's friends, coconspirators, and lab partners, who we only meet in this sequel. Their names are Samar and Andrea.
And so, the whole crew basically get abducted by a big, black SUV and taken to whatever generic government compound. Once they're inside, the government agents and government scientists are basically like, "We're going to need you to show us how this works." And that's basically it!
Why is this such a big deal? Well, recent interviews have surfaced the idea of a third Happy Death Day film in the franchise. According to the writer-director and star Jessica Rothe, this would be a jumping off point for the third film, if they got a chance to make it. The rest is just assumption, but I would guess the government somehow f*cks everything up, and it's up to Tree and her friends to save the world. Maybe the government makes a bigger version of the machine (or triggers a massive reaction in the one that already exists). Maybe everyone in the country, or even the world, is stuck in one gargantuan time loop! I mean, it's just guess work, but that would be pretty bonkers, right?
How Happy Death Day 2U Pulled Off That Wild (and Hilarious) Skydiving Death
Warning: Mild spoilers for Happy Death Day 2U ahead.
If you're not aware, Happy Death Day 2U has finally arrived to deliver more laughs and campy deaths than ever before. In the burgeoning franchise's second go-round, there are all sorts of twists and turns that will have you creeping toward the edge of your seat. And perhaps one of the best (and most fun) twists is a montage of bonkers, over-the-top deaths that range from jumping into a wood chipper, dropping a live hair dryer into a bathtub, and ramming a car into an electrical plant. But the most ridiculous death of all comes when Tree skydives out of an airplane . . . in a bikini.
During our recent interview with Jessica Rothe, the film's star talked all about the many mechanics that went into that one spectacular death. When it came to that epic free fall out of the plane, Rothe admitted she really had to psyche herself up to just fall into a big cushioned mat. "It was a trust fall," she said, "because I was just up in a plane shell, and they had mats below me, and I just had to not scream too much."
What you don't see in the film's hilarious trailer is the aftermath of that jump. Tree plummets to the ground, and we're an ultra slow-motion money shot: she's horizontal, just two or three feet off the ground, flipping off the camera with both hands, tongue out, somehow smiling. When time speeds up again, she sticks the landing (so to speak) and hits the ground with a sickening splat.
As it turns out, this part of the death was the hardest one to pull off."I couldn't be on a harness because I was wearing a bikini, so the only way they could get me to do it was by building this platform," Rothe recalled. "I was on it, and they had to drop me. They had to almost dunk tank me off the platform. But in order to get the pose, I had to strike it before they dropped me, even though I was being dropped seven or eight feet. So I had to tense my body, and flip off, and make a crazy face, and then they'd count, 'Three, two, one,' and the floor would just drop out from under me, and I'd land on a bunch of pads, but it was oddly difficult."
I know it's a lot to wrap your mind around if you haven't seen the movie, but trust us. It truly is a sight to behold. We'd like to seize this opportunity to well and truly commend Rothe for her flexing efforts.
Frozen 2 Has 2 New Cast Members and the Trailer Has 2 New Characters - Coincidence?
Even though the trailer for Frozen 2 has been released, we are more confused about the long-awaited Frozen sequel than ever. Is Arendelle no longer frozen? Are we even in Arendelle anymore? What made Anna switch from her usual braids to a brand new 'do? Though Elsa, Anna, Kristoff, Sven, and Olaf are all back in action, you'll also notice that there are two new characters seen in the trailer, glimpsed in a forest about one minute and 24 seconds into the clip. There have also been two new voice actors added to the cast. Coincidence? Perhaps. But here's what has been speculated about these two new characters so far.
If you haven't already heard the biggest question surrounding Frozen 2, it has to do with a new love interest, this time for Snow Queen Elsa. Ever since the original film's release in 2013, speculation has been swirling about Elsa's sexuality, with "Let It Go" interpreted by some as a potential LGBTQ+ anthem. In an interview with the Huffington Post last year, Jennifer Lee, the film's co-director and writer, said that she listens to fans and is actively thinking about the proposition of a queer Elsa, with "tons of conversations about" Elsa's role in the sequel taking place.
Idina Menzel, who is reprising her role as Elsa, has also said that - though she "can't promise anybody that that's what's gonna happen" - she also likes the idea of her character having a female love interest. So the question begs: Could that unknown female character in the tunic and pants be Elsa's new girlfriend? Kristen Bell, who voices Princess Anna, teased fans with a cryptic tweet, where she responded to a fan with the username "Give Elsa a Girlfriend" asking about the mysterious red-headed girl with this simple message: "Hmmmm. . ." Hmm, indeed!
It also appears from the trailer that the girl may have Elsa's same elemental abilities (except hers have to do with controlling Autumnal elements), as the boy next to her pops up in a spinning pile of leaves. Some fans are theorizing that these two characters are Anna and Kristoff's children, as they bear a passing resemblance to the lovebirds, but if Anna and Kristoff already have kids this old, then they have aged pretty darn well.
Besides the fact that we can't know with any certainty yet who these new characters are, we also have no idea whether they're actually voiced by the two new voice actors added to the cast: Evan Rachel Wood and Sterling K. Brown, though most fans are convinced that Wood will be voicing the auburn-haired leaf master, whoever she is. You might also notice that the trailer is missing a traditional Disney villain - besides that massive wave that Elsa battles, that is. Could that be Brown's role? We'll keep trying to solve this mystery, but in the meantime, we'll be staring at the Frozen 2 promo poster trying to find those clues Josh Gad alluded to in a tweet if you need us.
One of the Greatest American Novels Is Now a Hulu Series - and There's a Teaser!
Catch-22, the 1961 novel by Joseph Heller, is so iconic that the titular phrase is still used, to this day, to describe life's most paradoxical situations. Now, in 2019, the satirical story that started it all has been adapted into a new series by Hulu, and there's already a teaser! What's more, it looks really good. With a star-studded cast - George Clooney, Kyle Chandler, Christopher Abbott, Hugh Laurie, and more - and plenty of striking imagery to reel us in, it's hard to see how this won't be one of the most talked-about series in 2019.
If you're not familiar, the story plunks us right into the World War II trenches, where pilots are desperately trying to be relieved from duty. They request mental evaluations, hoping the army psychiatrist will declare them insane . . . but the catch is, if you have enough mental faculties to request an evaluation in the first place, you are, by default, sane enough to fly a plane. Cue the ensuing madness that surely can't lead to any kind of bright conclusion. Catch-22 premieres on May 17. Try not to unravel before then.
