7 Things People With Clean Kitchens Do Every Day
Do you hate to cook? Do you turn your nose when entering your kitchen and hurry out the door once your microwave beeps, signaling your frozen burrito is ready? And if we're really being honest, have you forgotten the last time you changed out your sponge or scrubbed the stove free of pasta-sauce splatters? It sounds like you have a messy kitchen. Marie Kondo, the Netflix star and New York Times bestselling author of The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up sympathizes. That's why she developed a system, which is called the KonMari Method, that allows anyone, even the seemingly hopelessly messy, can take on successfully.
If you're curious about her unique purging technique, read about my experience of using the KonMari Method in my kitchen. After you've trashed all the dishware, cooking tools, and pantry items that don't "spark joy" - aka make you happy when you see, touch, and use them - it's time to take on these daily habits of people with clean kitchens to keep your own space neat without intense effort.
- Keep Everything Off the Kitchen Counter
-
I know, this one seems like a tough one, yet your blender, sugar bowl, coffee maker, and other knickknacky things not only take up space on your counter, but they also actually make it impossible to clean. They gather dust and oily muck on and around them, and you ignore it. The person with a clean kitchen wipes down all appliances, etc. with a warm, damp sponge before storing the items in shelves or cabinets. Yes, even those things they use every day.
- Wipe the Stove, Sink, and Counter With Each Use
-
Marie Kondo says, "Tidying your kitchen means wiping away any water or oil." If there's nothing on your stove, sink, or counter, it suddenly becomes really easy to run a sponge over these areas every day to clean up any splashes or spills. Ta-da! No crumbs or mysterious stains to be seen.
- Keep Dish Soap and Sponges Under the Sink
-
Having tried this out myself, I can attest to its effectiveness. After washing dishes, simply squeeze out the sponge and keep it in a wire sponge holder under the sink along with your soap and rubber gloves. It's a surprising trick to keep your kitchen looking neat and inviting.
- Store the Trash Can Under the Sink
-
There's something off-putting about having a trash can in the middle of the kitchen, even one with a sleek stainless steel design. Storing your trash can under the sink keeps it out of sight and out of mind. I also love taking the trash out more frequently so my kitchen never smells.
- Wash and Dry Dishes Immediately
-
If you have a drying rack in your kitchen, get rid of it! It makes it all too easy to pile on the dishes without ever putting them away, plus the wet drippings pool and grow all sorts of gnarly things. Instead, do as the tidy person does and wash and dry the dishes immediately after a meal.
- Keep About 30 Percent of Your Fridge Empty
-
Ever wonder where you are going to put your leftovers or newly bought groceries? If you always have a few clear spots in your fridge, it makes it easy to find a designated spot for new things.
- Give Each Thing a Definite Home (Away From the Stove)
-
Though it's tempting to want to stash kitchen tools, spices, oils, etc. near the kitchen stove for easy access, this is a recipe for disaster. As things cook, the oil often splatters onto these items. In addition, the heat can drastically reduce the storage life of spices and oils, rendering them stale and rancid. Instead, store everything away from the stove. Before cooking, pull out all the equipment and food stuff you may need, and put each thing away, item by item, after its use. This makes cleanup way easier.
A Coffee-Brewing Alarm Clock Exists, and I Think I Just Became a Morning Person
If you're one of those people who can spring out of bed in the morning, I don't know whether to envy you or fear you. If given the option, I could lie in bed for hours. I've even tried letting my phone charge in the bathroom, leaving me no choice but to get up to turn off my alarm. The problem with that is that I just fall back into bed. At this point, I'll try anything to make my mornings as seamless as possible; but in my dream world, I would be woken up to fresh coffee brewing, birds chirping, the sun shining, with exactly enough time to pick out an outfit I actually like. Well, Urban Outfitters must've been listening, because they've made one of my dreams come true with this Barisieur Coffee Brewing Alarm Clock ($445).
This is an alarm clock that wakes you up with freshly brewed coffee or tea. Yes, you read that right. It's even got a refrigerated compartment for your milk, so it's all ready to go. If this isn't luxury, I don't know what is. Simply set your alarm, and once it goes off, your drink will be ready within three to five minutes. I'm not the only one who thinks this is the coolest thing ever; when I showed this fun gadget to my coworkers, one said, "I want someone to propose to me with that alarm clock." Now, the only question is, can this fit on our bedside table?

I Lost (and Kept Off) 70 Pounds by Doing These 3 Things
One day I'm gonna tell my kids the story about how I ran two marathons in two different countries in one week, and (hopefully) they'll think I'm a badass.
In life, we go through a lot of major milestones worth celebrating. For me, graduating college was pretty epic. So was landing my first NY big-girl job. Moving out of my mom's house - also monumental. Paying my first $1,175 rent bill on my own - flat out amazing for a girl-turned-woman who used to deliver her college newspaper for $20 a day. But my biggest accomplishment to date? Losing - and keeping off - 70 pounds.
I remember the night my journey started like it was yesterday. I was sitting in my college dorm room working on statistics homework when I spotted it out of the corner of my eye. The silver digital scale resting below my bed in the same place I stashed it on move-in day. At the time, it wasn't that I didn't know that I had a weight issue. I knew I wasn't skinny. I never liked to look at photos of myself. But until that point, I had never felt the need to confront my weight head on. As the homework procrastination grew, my curiosity piqued.
So I did it. I pulled the scale out from under my bed and tapped it with my big toe. I stepped on. Those three seconds felt like three hours as I stood there waiting to be confronted with the truth. And then it happened. I was mortified. Momentarily frozen. How did I get here? I wondered, as tears instantly welled up in my eyes - momentarily obscuring the number on the scale. Two-hundred and four pounds.
I had to do something. Without hesitation, I walked over to the dresser and pulled out a high school volleyball sweatshirt. After tripping over myself pulling on a pair of black cotton leggings, I put on sneakers and left my dorm room and headed for the staircase. Breath labored, pulse high, I flung open the exit door.
I took off down the long stretch of road into the night alongside my dorm, sprinting as fast as my legs could carry me. Within 30 seconds, I collapsed onto the grass, overtaken with emotion. How did I get here? I asked myself again. It hit me like daggers in my 18-year-old stomach. Two-hundred and four pounds. I replayed the numbers on that small, dusty screen over and over in my head. It didn't take long, lying there, before I knew what I had to do. I knew I had to make a change. I knew I had to lose weight. I knew I couldn't live like that anymore. In that moment, I promised myself I wouldn't.
Seven years later, a lot has happened since that night lying in the grass freshman year. There was a point when I joined Weight Watchers and went to weekly meetings, sometimes with my mom. I picked up running and completed my first half-marathon. I trained for and ran a full marathon. And another. And another. And then I was crazy enough to run another two marathons on different continents within six days, something 204-pound Emily would've never in her wildest dreams ever fathomed.
Still, as a woman in my late 20s, I'm well aware that maintaining this weight loss and an active, healthy lifestyle is a daily commitment. I know that my journey is lifelong. Here are the three biggest lessons I learned that helped me to lose 70 pounds:

Looking For an Online Workout Plan? A Trainer Wants You to Know This First
If your Instagram looks anything like mine, pretty much every other post is a trainer, entrepreneur, or influencer promoting an eating plan, workout app, or their own impressive journey. In a lot of ways, this is great. The social media fitness community can be supportive, motivational, fun, and a great way to track your own progress. But one thing it's made more complicated? Finding and choosing a good fitness plan. Options are great, but at this point, it's overwhelming. From all these choices, how do you find the plan that's safe, doable, effective, and right for you?
BOC-certified athletic trainer Liz Letchford, MS, told POPSUGAR that being cautious and skeptical is your best bet. "Make an educated decision," she said. "Choose a coach who has the education and certifications that are most in line with your goals." If you're looking to lose fat and build up strength, for example, Liz recommends "a scientifically rigorous plan, like Renaissance Periodization." If you're a runner looking to improve your split time, "a running coach who is well-versed in gait analysis" is the way to go. Just looking to move better and with less pain? Look for a coach "who specializes in biomechanics, like those certified by Dumbbells, Barbells, and Cables (DBC) or Clinical Athlete."
In other words, vetting a trainer, coach, or training plan is essential. That means looking beyond their photos and into their credentials and specialties by googling them, checking their website for certifications, or sending them a DM to ask about their areas of expertise. And it's worth being cautious with the term "coach," too. Some coaches can be certified; a strength and conditioning specialist (CSCS) might call themselves a coach, for example. But for the most part, it's not a regulated term, which means that if someone calls themselves a fitness or weight-loss coach, they might not actually be trained or certified in that area.
Instead, look for terms like certified personal trainer (CPT), CSCS, or certified athletic trainer (ATC) - who specialize in treating injuries and improving mobility in a more rehab-oriented way than a CPT. Then, check out the organization they're certified by; they should state it right next to the certification, on their bio or website.
For trainers and training plans, look for people certified from organizations like:
- The American Council on Exercise (ACE)
- The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM)
- The National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM)
- International Sports Sciences Association (ISSA)
- Board of Certification for the Athletic Trainer (BOC)
For running coaches, look for certifications from:
- USA Track and Field (USATF)
- United Endurance Sports Coaching Academy (UESCA)
- Road Runners Club of America (RRCA)
For nutrition planning, look for a:
- Registered Dietitian (RD or RDN)
- Certified Nutritionist (CN)
With nutrition, it's important to know that RDs have more training, and prescribe full diet plans. A CN, on the other hand, can give advice on making better food choices and eating according to your goals. And if you're looking at a trainer whose organization isn't on this list, give it a Google search. See what the organization requires for certification; there should be courses, either in-person or online, on subjects like anatomy and coaching techniques.
Choosing a trainer based on their credentials and specialties is the way to go, Liz said, because everyone's body is different; if you go off of someone's appearance or social media game, there's no guarantee you'll get identical results. That's no reason to stop checking out those posts or following those trainers or influencers - their tips might still be helpful, and if nothing else, they're fun to follow. If you're plotting out your fitness plan, though, it helps to look a little further than skin deep. Focus on you - your body, your habits, your goals - and choose a qualified trainer or a plan that matches up.

Yes, You Can Buy All the Workout Equipment You Need For Strength Training on Amazon
Though experts are always debating the merits of different workouts, there's one thing they can agree on: strength training is one of the most beneficial things you can do for your body. That doesn't mean you need to buy a fancy gym membership right away, though. In fact, there are plenty of highly effective strength training workouts you can do at home. But before you start on the overhead presses, make sure you have the equipment you need. These 18 pieces of strength training equipment you can buy on Amazon might be a good place to start.
This Is the Hands-Down Best Workout to Shed Those Extra Pounds
We don't have to look far for incentive to go to the gym. In addition to the mental health benefits of working out, it's rewarding to feel "in shape," even if weight loss isn't our goal. Of course, many people seek workouts that burn the most fat - and burning belly fat is a common objective. If you're looking to burn belly fat, a healthy combination of fitness and nutrition is key.
David Chesworth, an ACSM-certified personal trainer and wellness coach at Hilton Head Health, told POPSUGAR that, unlike muscle building, there aren't specific exercises that "spot reduce fat." However, a combination of HIIT (high-intensity interval training) and the right nutrition plan can help reduce belly fat.
"Those on a weight-loss plan who focus on both nutrition and fitness have been shown to reduce belly fat quicker than those who only focus on fitness or only focus on nutrition," Chesworth explained.
Chesworth recommended Tabata, one of the most popular forms of HIIT training. Tabata involves 20 seconds of work and 10 seconds of rest repeated eight times. Three rounds of Tabata lasts 12 minutes.
"If you choose to do one upper-body focused round of Tabata, such as wall push-ups, one lower-body focused Tabata exercise, such as squats, and one core-focused Tabata exercise, such as mountain climbers, you will not only get a full-body strength workout, but also an intense cardio workout," Chesworth said. At the end of the workout, it's important to spend five to 10 minutes stretching in order to complete a well-rounded fitness routine.
Holly Roser, a San Francisco-based personal trainer and nutrition expert, told POPSUGAR that HIIT has the "best research behind it with its ability to burn higher rates of fat and build muscle in a short amount of time." Like Chesworth, she emphasized that we can't "spot treat" specific areas. "You can't simply lose fat in just one area, but [you can] do total-body workouts to reduce overall fat, which, in turn, will lower the body fat percentage in your body," Roser said.
In order to reduce overall fat, Roser recommended the following workout, which can be done at the gym or at home.
- Three sets of 15 squats (with weights if you have them)
- 50 jumping jacks
- Three sets of 15 push-ups
- 25 mountain climbers
- Three sets of 30 lunges, alternating legs
- Rest
- Three sets of 15 deadlifts
- 10 burpees
- Three sets of 15 rows
- 30-second plank
- Rest
- Three sets of 15 Lat pulldowns
- Three sets of 15 triceps dips
- 30-second side plank on each arm
- 25 squat jacks
- 50 jumping jacks
Reducing fat in any area of the body won't happen through exercise alone - nutrition also plays a crucial role. David Nico, PhD, a healthcare strategist, keynote speaker, and certified wellness coach, told POPSUGAR that people looking to reduce or prevent belly fat should "avoid refined sugar, fried foods, and alcohol, [and] eat nonstarchy vegetables, low glycemic fruits, and healthy essential fats."
In addition to healthy staples like fruits and vegetables, Nico said that healthy fats and lean meats are an excellent addition to your diet. "Eat healthy fats from flaxseeds, chia seeds, and walnuts, bursting with essential fatty acids and great for energy to workout and keep fit," he told POPSUGAR. In addition to eating cold-water fish like wild sockeye salmon, Nico suggested grass-fed and grass-finished bison because "it contains higher levels of CLA, supporting belly fat reduction."
Now that you've got your workout and nutrition regimen in order, there's one last step: stock your cabinets with vitamins and supplements that help burn belly fat. "Omega-3 EPA/DHA and omega-6 GLA are essential fats, which are often deficient in the standard diet and help to reduce belly fat," Nico told POPSUGAR. "A high-quality supplement provides additional support if you are not consuming enough in the diet." He also recommended milk thistle extract, which supports and detoxifies liver cells that are important for fat loss. "Patients tend to lose body fat more rapidly if their liver is functioning better," he explained.
There's not one simple way to reduce belly fat - but incorporating a HIIT workout, healthy eating habits, and supplements into your daily regimen will help you achieve your goal.

A 10-Song Introduction to the Infectious Power of Lizzo
Like everyone else who has a brain and two functioning ears, I've decided to dedicate my life to spreading the gospel of Lizzo.
The 30-year-old rapper, singer, and talented flautist - if playing flute and twerking on stage isn't instantly iconic, I don't know what is - dropped her debut album, Lizzobangers, in 2013, and she's been pumping out bop after bop ever since. Although it's long overdue (in my not so humble opinion), Lizzo is finally getting the mainstream shine she deserves, from flawless appearances on The Ellen DeGeneres Show and The Tonight Show to seeing her latest single, "Juice," chart on Billboard's Hot R&B.
Like many others, a lot of what appeals to me about Lizzo, other than her infectious beats, is her inclusive, empowering message. But in an age when feminism and self-acceptance are often hollowed out by big brands in order to sell everything from body wash to pink hats with the help of a cheeky hashtag, Lizzo continues to prove that her message is authentic. She lives what she raps; she puts immense thought into her lyrics, ensuring that they're not empowering for empowerment's sake.
For instance, in her 2017 track "Truth Hurts," she sings, "I will never ever, ever be your side chick," but that wasn't the original lyric. During Allison P. Davis's recent (and fantastic) profile of Lizzo in The Cut, the musician notes that the original lyric was "I could never ever, ever be a side chick," but she decided to tweak it to be more inclusive.
"B*tch, what about side chicks! I don't want to exclude them! I don't want to make them feel bad. I think that's why this feels brand new. I'm trying to be inclusive," she explains. "Could this song ["Like a Girl," her new track that's about throwing dollars at strippers "like a girl"] be in a Dove commercial? Yes, but it won't. They aren't thinking about everybody. . . . The old heads aren't ready for that."
While "the old heads" might not be ready for Lizzo's brand of confidence just yet, there's nothing standing in the way of falling in love with her yourself (if you haven't already). Check out her most essential songs ahead before her next album, Cuz I Love You, drops in April.
Sparks Fly Between Seth Rogen and Charlize Theron in the Hilarious Trailer For Long Shot
Huh, who would've thought: Seth Rogen and Charlize Theron are the leads we never knew we needed in a romantic comedy.
In their upcoming film Long Shot (which was originally titled Flarsky, so, count your blessings), Theron plays Charlotte, the secretary of state who's gearing up a campaign to be president, while Rogen stars as Fred Flarsky, a journalist. It just so happens that Charlotte used to babysit Fred when they were younger, and a chance run-in at a party brings them together again as adults. When she hires him as the speechwriter for her campaign? Well, sparks fly.
The film is also bolstered by the comedic presence of Randall Park as Fred's boss, O'Shea Jackson Jr. as Fred's BFF, June Diane Raphael as Charlotte's assistant, and Alexander Skarsgard as . . . well, we don't know yet, but it's safe to assume he'll play some superhot ex of Charlotte's since this is a romantic comedy, after all. Watch the trailer above, and catch Long Shot when it arrives in theaters on May 3.
Hasbro's New Game Is Part Cards Against Humanity, Part What Do You Meme?, and All Parenting Humor
If the games Cards Against Humanity and What Do You Meme? had a baby together, it'd be Hasbro's new game for parents: Raising Hell. The party game for adults is all about commiserating with your fellow parents over the crazy things kids say, do, and require of us as they grow up, and every mom and dad knows there's no better way to do that than to pass around all-too-real memes.
The game consists of 372 hilarious cards - 72 photo cards and 300 caption cards - and players take turns being the "judge," who is responsible for choosing a photo card at the beginning of the round. The other players then must choose one of the caption cards in their hand, essentially creating a parenting meme, and the judge votes on which caption fits the image best. The winner gets to keep the photo card, the next judge draws a new card, and the play continues . . . likely until you've laughed so hard that you're crying and all the wine is gone.
Sounds like a great time to us! Raising Hell ($20) hits shelves on May 20, but you can preorder it via Amazon or Walmart now!
Darren Criss and His Longtime Girlfriend Mia Swier Are Married!
It's official! Darren Criss and his longtime girlfriend Mia Swier are married. After eight years together, the couple said "I do" in New Orleans on Saturday surrounded by family and friends. A few celebrity guests included Darren's former Glee costars Chord Overstreet, Harry Shum Jr., and Lea Michele, who performed at the wedding.
Darren and Mia have made several red carpet appearances together over the past few months, as he's accepted awards for his role in The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story. The actor revealed their engagement in January 2018, although he later admitted he'd popped the question a while before the announcement. Congrats to the newlyweds!
OMG, This Hatching Toothless Is Just Like a Hatchimal, but How to Train Your Dragon-Style
Hatchimals have a new cousin, so to speak. Announced at 2019's Toy Fair, Spin Master shared that they'll be releasing a How to Train Your Dragon Hatching Toothless ($60), which hatches just like the Hatchimals your kids have grown to love, but has a bit of dragon flair.
Rather than rub and cuddle the egg to coax it to hatch, Toothless's Egg needs to be aggravated. Once bothered enough, Toothless, with his light-up mouth and pumping wings, will come alive inside his egg, hatch, and be ready to play. Kids ages 5 and up can play games with him like "Ask Toothless," Hot Potato, and "Toothless Says," and he can be taught how to dive-bomb and plasma blast, just like in the movies. Toothless will also roar or purr depending on his mood.
Get a sneak peek at the adorable interactive toy ahead, which will be available in the Fall.
Want to Lose Belly Fat in a Month? It's Possible - Here's How to Do It
Thirty days may not seem like a lot of time, but a lot can happen in a month: you could get married, win the lottery and quit your job, or traipse around Europe on a life-changing vacation. More realistically, you can use 30 days to get stronger or, if you're looking to shed belly fat, lose inches and see results.
Although you won't be able to completely transform your body or even lose more than a few pounds in a month, you can jump-start your weight-loss journey and be well on your way to achieving your goals. Just be mindful that while you can lose weight in a month, you can't specifically target your belly; there's no such thing as being able to spot-reduce fat (your body decides where the fat comes from - yay, genetics!). We tapped registered dietitian and ACSM-certified personal trainer Jim White, who owns Jim White Fitness and Nutrition Studios and helps clients reach their weight-loss goals, for insight on how to lose belly fat in 30 days.
How Much Weight You Can Lose in 30 Days
Jim said people can healthily lose half a pound to two pounds a week. In a month, that could add up to four to eight pounds lost. Since one pound of fat equals 3,500 calories, to lose one pound a week, you would have to burn approximately 500 extra calories a day. This can be achieved through eating in a healthy calorie deficit or working out to burn extra calories (or a combination of both). Other lifestyle factors also play a role. Getting enough sleep will ensure your body recovers well and that you'll be energized for your workouts the next day. And too much stress increases the stress hormone cortisol, which can increase your cravings for caloric refined carbs and comfort food, which will prevent you from losing weight (especially in your belly). Make sure, in addition to eating in a calorie deficit, that you're also getting at least seven hours of sleep a night and managing your stress.
You can also lose inches in 30 days. "Just in my own 15 years of experience in working with patients, I have seen some lose up to five to 10 inches in a month from losing four to eight pounds," Jim told POPSUGAR. Keep in mind those five to 10 inches aren't just from your belly; those are full-body measurements from all major areas, including your waist, hips, chest, arms, legs, shoulders, and neck. He added that the inches lost depend on if you are weight training, what kind of cardio you're doing, how much water you're drinking, and how many calories you're eating.
How to Get Results in 30 Days
It takes a multipronged approach to see results in 30 days. Jim advises doing cardio for 30 to 60 minutes, three to five days a week. The goal is to burn 500 calories a day; this can be achieved through cardio, eating in a calorie deficit, and getting in more steps. He also advises strength training two to four days a week. Not only does strength training also burn calories, but it helps build lean muscle, too, which burns more calories at rest.
NASM-certified personal trainer Sydney Eaton, head of fitness and programs at PK Coin App, said that high-intensity interval training, or HIIT, can also be an effective way to burn fat fast. "I've seen many clients achieve desirable results in a very short amount of time with [HIIT]," Sydney told POPSUGAR. For your cardio days, you could opt to do HIIT in the form of sprints on the treadmill or a 20-minute no-equipment HIIT workout.
As we mentioned above, eating in a calorie deficit is key. Jim recommends eating 500 calories less than your total daily energy expenditure, or TDEE. This is the number of calories you burn in a day, which is based on factors like age, height, sex, and activity level. To calculate what this number is and what your calorie target should be to lose weight, use this formula. Just make sure you don't go below 1,200 calories a day for women; in a previous interview, Jim said eating any fewer calories than that can slow down your metabolism and result in negative side effects like low energy, loss of hair, hunger pangs, and a negative impact on your menstrual cycle.
When it comes to what you eat, you need to dial in your diet to see results in a short amount of time. Jim recommends limiting your indulgences to one meal a week, cutting back on eating after dinner (like that late-night scoop of ice cream you just can't resist), and limiting caloric beverages such as alcohol, soda, and other sugary drinks.
Although everybody is different and some people may take a longer period of time to see results (or may see results faster!), it is possible to notice a difference in belly fat in just 30 days. With a careful approach to exercise, diet, and other lifestyle factors, you will be on your way to shrinking your belly.
30+ Recipes to Jump-Start Your Mediterranean Diet Journey
The Mediterranean diet has already been dubbed the best diet of 2019, so it's time to get familiar with it and get going on it. Not only is it good for your gut, but it's also incredibly easy to follow and will help you meet your weight-loss and health goals.
This diet doesn't force you to cut a bunch of stuff out of your day but instead focuses on eating clean and fresh. Your meal plates should typically have half a plate of veggies or fruit, a quarter of protein, and a quarter of whole grains. And don't forget your healthy fats! You need those too. And while this diet has a lot of lean, healthy proteins and not much dairy, you can still have minimal servings of cheese, red meat, and wine, though probably no more than once a week.
For some recipe ideas to get you going on this diet, we pulled together more than 30 options that are great pieces to each meal. Most of them require other portions, whether it's the meat or the grains, to make a complete meal, but once you get the hang of what all you need for a meal to come together, you'll have no trouble following along!

Is Dating Outside Your Political Party Impossible in 2019?
A couple months before the 2016 presidential election, I came across a study that revealed that just nine percent of Republicans and eight percent of Democrats said their spouse or partner was a member of the other major political party. The study comprised survey results from the Spring of 2016 - roughly one year since then-candidate Donald Trump had launched his misogynistic, racist, xenophobic, and generally intolerant presidential campaign.
The results seemed to suggest a distinct shift from previous, similar surveys, including one from 1958 that revealed 72 percent of parents had no party preference for their child's spouse - compared to only 45 percent as of 2017. They were also in contrast with a trend of increasing interracial and interfaith marriages through the years. Party politics have indisputably become more polarized since the 1950s, especially as women have become more empowered to partake in politics and share opinions that may be different from their male partners. As feminist journalist Rebecca Solnit has pointed out, unsaid numbers of husbands have influenced or even controlled their wives' votes, and some still do today. But another stark reality is that young women - and women of all ages - are increasingly finding our voices, and this could yield long-term paradigm shifts in the worlds of dating and marriage.
For many, the option to stay silent about politics and social-justice issues with a partner in this political reality feels like a symptom of privilege at best and an impossibility at worst.
Of course, the divides between millennial women's experiences in relationships and previous generations aren't limited to politics: millennial women are getting married later, having fewer children - if having children at all - and more of them are the breadwinners in their households than ever. But their politics are different: young women have become one of the most reliably liberal political blocs, and an increasingly politically engaged one, too. Our growing independence and our politics are inextricably linked, and we're not afraid to disagree with and challenge differing views around us.
In either case, I didn't think much of the study about declining interpolitical couples at the time, even over the course of my own almost year-long relationship with a libertarian, Republican-leaning white man. (I'm an Asian-American woman.) We started dating a few months after I stumbled across the study. It would be almost three years later, at the onset of 2019, that I found myself thinking of the study once again and interrogating my own experience with an interpolitical, heterosexual, and cisgender romantic relationship.
It wasn't that my then-partner and I hadn't discussed politics. Frankly, politics was sometimes all we'd discussed, often in long, drawn out, and emotionally laborious debates that left me exhausted and disheartened. It often seemed that no amount of statistics or moral arguments I offered could convince him that something Trump had said was offensive, or that reproductive rights comprised an urgent, existential issue for many women - and specifically for me. As deeply as I wanted to show him my lived implications around issues over which we'd shared disagreements, comments he often made during our arguments deterred me from ever opening up about them. As a result, I never felt fully emotionally safe or close to him.
But why hadn't his politics bothered me enough to leave? Especially as an Asian-American daughter of immigrants, whose life had been deeply, personally affected by sexual violence and a taxing journey to access reproductive health care? The end of our relationship had been the result of disagreements over commitment; not whether abortion was a fundamental human right or the fact that he'd cast his ballot for Gary Johnson in a swing state. Three years later, with that question nagging at me, I decided to ask other women like me - specifically, liberal women of color who date men - to share their experiences in the hopes of shedding some light on my own.
What It's Really Like to Date Someone With Different Political Views
Well before 2018, Trump made his true colors clear as day. His actions since - overseeing the separation of migrant families, turning away survivors of domestic violence and children at the borders, locking migrant children in cages, and forcing a man credibly accused of sexual assault onto the Supreme Court - should have surprised no one. For many, the option to stay silent about politics and social-justice issues with a partner in this political reality feels like a symptom of privilege at best and an impossibility at worst.
In straight relationships, political gender divides carry deep implications. (Fifty-three percent of men voted for Trump over Hillary Clinton in 2016, compared with 42 percent of women.) From #MeToo and the annual Women's March to the cultural ramifications of the president's notorious "grab 'em by the p-ssy" comments, gender and politics have become deeply interwoven into the American social landscape. It's no wonder the political, gendered conflicts that play out in public spill over into personal relationships.
As I continued to think of the 2016 study, I realized my assumption had been that the only way straight couples from opposing political parties could still exist was if those couples avoided talking about politics altogether. But when I started talking to such couples, I learned it wasn't that simple. These people had a wide range of experiences based on what, exactly, was being disagreed upon, the extent of the disagreement, and general feelings about whether discussions of politics and social justice issues were respectful and productive.
Melina*, 21, dated a man who shared her Filipino heritage for three months starting in 2017. She eventually ended their relationship over their vast differences - but not, she said, before plenty of lengthy, seemingly endless conversations and debates about a range of issues. She remembers that many of their disagreements weren't always as straightforward as Democrat vs. Republican, but, as she stated several times: "Existence is political."
Melina said her then-boyfriend made victim-blaming comments about the way women dressed, expressed discomfort with the idea of having an LGBTQ+ child, was frustrated with the #MeToo movement, and seemed "overly sensitive" in conversations about race. He also pushed back on her hypothetical preference to keep her last name if she were to marry, calling it "disrespectful." She said she challenged these views every time, requiring what she called "deep emotional labor" and significant amounts of time researching facts to counter his often problematic and troubling beliefs.
"All of it showed me that in your relationship, you have to feel mentally and emotionally safe," Melina said. She said social justice had been a deeply important part of her life for years, and her relationship had started to feel contrary to these values. "I thought a lot about privilege and the ability to 'opt out' of social justice, and whether social justice really means that much to you if you can coexist with and reward harmful views."
"Coming from a diverse, liberal part of California, and meeting his traditional family in Connecticut, showed me a side of the country I hadn't known before."
Jill Serron, 20, an Indian-American student at Boston University, also talked about the realities of privilege and its role in her ongoing relationship with a white man who voted for Trump in the 2016 election. According to Serron - who said her boyfriend has since recanted his support for Trump - their relationship is not only enabled but empowered by their ability to learn from each other and examine the vastly different cultural experiences and upbringing that were the source of their disagreements.
"Coming from a diverse, liberal part of California, and meeting his traditional family in Connecticut, showed me a side of the country I hadn't known before," Serron said. "Our conversations have shown me how other people think and helped both me and him grow."
But Serron acknowledged the presence of privilege in how their desire to be together, despite their differences, sometimes relies on agreeing to drop a topic. Occasionally, she said, they simply determine that something that divides them actually has little bearing on their lives, and therefore isn't worth fighting or harming their relationship over. "And obviously, there's privilege in that," Serron said. "We can avoid talking about some things, like how we disagree sometimes about LGBTQ+ and trans issues, or about people are overreacting to things Trump does, because we're not directly affected by those things ourselves."
According to Serron, she maintains boundaries and standards for decency she would require of any partner, noting that her boyfriend has been supportive of #MeToo and survivors of sexual assault. She said their relationship has expanded both their ways of thinking despite the fact that she's a Democrat and he's a Republican
Mariah*, 21, a graphic designer based in Orange County, California, shares Serron's sense of boundaries as to how far disagreements can stretch. She met her then-boyfriend, a white man whose experiences differed vastly from hers as a Vietnamese daughter of immigrants raised in a predominantly immigrant community, on Tinder. On their first date, Mariah said he had wasted no time in launching into a "conservative rant" about economic policies and his strong support for Trump's immigration policies.
"I never interrupted him, and that seemed to surprise him: that we could have mutually very respectful conversations despite our disagreements," Mariah said. "But meeting my parents, and learning their stories - that changed and moved him a bit. We both learned a lot from each other and that was so interesting."
Mariah said she draws the line when someone's beliefs shape their treatment of other people, or when their treatment of others is fueled by feelings of supremacy and disrespect. "The fact that he wasn't like that, and he respected and listened to me, made it easy to be with him," she said. Their relationship ultimately ended for other reasons, but Mariah said they remain friends, and she would not only be open to but may even prefer to date someone with different political views again.
Can Liberal-Conservative Romances Last?
Dr. Gary Brown, a Los Angeles-based couple's therapist who has been in practice for 25 years and takes pride in his diverse practice serving couples from all backgrounds, has encountered marriages and relationships troubled with political differences before. But according to Brown, political differences are seldom the sole issue rocking romantic relationships. Instead, couples often seek his help for a litany of other serious, relatively apolitical issues.
"Whether or not you stay in a relationship with someone with whom you have opposite views, I think, might be more about whether you really love each other and have a good relationship in the first place, all of that aside," he said, noting that tolerance "can very well help a couple transcend" their political disagreements.
""With all this polarization, there comes a lot of passion."
Dr. Elizabeth Lombardo, a clinical psychologist and couple's therapist based in the Chicago area, agreed that when couples who are deeply divided by political disagreements often initially come to her office seeking help with other problems. And certainly, this has become more of a trend in the last three years. "With all this polarization, there comes a lot of passion," she said.
That polarization has reached a head in the Trump era, and Lombardo said it often works in tandem with an inability to hear other views. "I call it 'conditional self-worth,' when you need others to agree with or see eye-to-eye or validate your views, to feel self-worth, when you need to be heard, so you don't let the other person speak," she said.
Lombardo posits that this is especially the case in a social media age, as we've become increasingly accustomed to sharing our views in tweets and posts in communities of mostly like-minded people. As a result, Lombardo believes people's growing need for validation could impact what they expect and demand from their partners. While she can't quite speak to generational differences in how women approach political disagreement with their partners, she can see a connection between social media and a growing need to have our beliefs validated and approved of.
According to Lombardo, there's "always a way" couples in disagreement can remain together. But certainly, that's a choice for each person to make based on their values and priorities.
How Boundaries, Mutual Respect, and Values Play a Role
But others, like Melina, see things differently, and view having basic agreements with your partner as a matter of standing up for social justice and morality in one's personal life.
For Melina, looking back at her relationship made her think of that of her parents and their upbringing in the Philippines. "I know there are things they disagree really sharply about," she said. While both of her parents are deeply religious, she said her mother tends to vote conservatively in contrast with her father's Democratic voting record. "But they don't really talk about this, and that's not always about privilege, but the cultural contexts in which some people are raised and what they're raised to see as too taboo to talk about - like LGBTQ+ identity or abortion rights, maybe."
Ultimately, as I tried to neatly tie together my thoughts about the 2016 study on interpolitical relationships in a fresh, 2019 context, I thought again of what Dr. Brown had said about a baseline of "mutual respect." Certainly, everyone has different boundaries and standards for what they seek in a partner, often shaped by identity and lived experience. But is it possible to feel respected by someone whose views and political participation disrespect the existence of other people like you? Of other groups you regard as equal? Of the fundamental values you hold at a time of nearly unprecedented assaults on these values? For all the frequent op-eds and cultural essays by men who refuse to date feminists - and by conservative women who refuse to date feminist men - don't women and feminists have standards of our own? Don't we have a fundamental need to feel respected, to be consistent in our values?
When I think about my own experience in a relationship with someone with whom I shared deep political and ideological differences today, what comes to mind first is how young I was. My conversations with Melina, Jill, Mariah, and doctors Brown and Lombardo prompted me to reevaluate my own past and all that I hadn't considered at the time. I realize I'd held an unshakable belief that I had not just the power, but the obligation, to change and unconditionally support someone - no matter the exhaustive cost to me personally. As I've struggled to take care of myself amid a constantly either draining or terrifying news cycle in the last almost three years, I've gradually come to shed that mindset altogether.
Relationships and human connections don't exist in a vacuum; different people find different interactions and conversations rewarding. But we are living in an age of children in cages and alleged abusers in the White House and Supreme Court. I understand the choice to opt out of the debilitating emotional labor of discussing with a partner why children do not belong in cages and abusers do not belong in power.
In the years since my last and only interpolitical relationship, the events that have transpired have shown me the importance of building relationships with those who share my fundamental values - those who see what is happening in the country and the world, and care. I'm proud to identify as a feminist and Democratic voter, with little patience for political stances propped up by misogyny, racism, xenophobia, and intolerance - and to say with confidence that I wouldn't enter my 2016 relationship as the woman I am in 2019.
Whether You Belong to Gryffindor or House Targaryen, You'll Love This Bookish Wedding
If you dream of flying around the Quidditch pitch with Harry and Ron, or imagine traversing through the Seven Kingdoms, this bookish wedding will keep your attention until the very last page. Charlotte and Arthur made sure to highlight each of the fandoms they love during their North Carolina nuptials, and photographer Audrey Priel shared some behind-the-scenes details from their special day.
Audrey was blown away as soon as she met up with Charlotte and her bridesmaids on April 1, at the Marriott City Center in Downtown Raleigh. "Charlotte and her girls were already dressed to the nines and her DRESS was just absolutely breathtaking. A beautiful, flowy silvery gray color, that hugged her curves in just the right spot, had the perfect amount of princess pouff, and with a gorgeously matched shawl, she was inspiring to look at," Audrey said.
"With everyone in good spirits, we laughed and took pictures of details, including her homemade bridesmaid necklaces, her Harry Potter-inspired Head Girl pin, and her Matron of Honor's Game of Thrones-inspired Hand of the Queen pin (and yes, the Best Man had a Hand of the King pin as well). Their beautiful golden flowers were adorned with feathers and matched all of the glittery awesomeness!"
Charlotte and Arthur's ceremony and reception were held at the Bridge Club, complete with high ceilings, stunning windows, and tasty food. Throughout the celebration, guests were treated to pop culture references from The Office, Doctor Who, Star Wars, and The Lord of the Rings, in addition to Game of Thrones and Harry Potter. The festivities finished off with a murder mystery cocktail hour, video games, and of course, a fandom-friendly cake. Keep reading to see all the bookish details ahead!
Here's How a Pair of Globetrotters Added Some Wanderlust Into Their Outdoor Wedding
When Mike and Kim decided to tie the knot, they wanted the ceremony to be centered around something they both enjoy: traveling! Since the beginning of their relationship, they have been exploring new places all over the globe by making sure to visit a new country every year. It started with their wedding invitations, which resembled passports, complete with stamps from the seven countries they had visited together. There were many more charming touches to the wedding that incorporated the travel theme, from seat assignments that looked like plane tickets to globes used in the decor. They even displayed some souvenirs from their trips and treated their guests to a trunk of their favorite things from all over the world.
The wedding took place at Vineland Estates Winery in Canada, which is fitting for a couple that likes the outdoors. "Since we wanted our wedding to be intimate and romantic, with only close friends and families, we decided to go with a rustic wedding style in a winery setting (it is simple but elegant)," Mike said. "We like the outdoors a lot, and we really appreciate the beauty of Mother Nature, so we wanted our decor to be as natural as possible."

Who Needs a Gender-Reveal Cake When You Can Have Elaborate Gender-Reveal Nails?
Going all out for gender reveals has become the norm, and people are constantly trying to find ways to get creative. We've seen a whole lot of cakes, but not once have we seen a candle-topped cake as part of a manicure - until now. A viral video of these gender-reveal nails is making the rounds on Instagram after a nail artist named Marsha from Trend Setters Hair Studio in Cincinnati posted her eye-catching handiwork.
"My coworker Sherice is expecting her second child. She wanted me to do some gender-reveal nails because she had never seen any before," Marsha told POPSUGAR. "She gave me full range to do whatever I wanted, so the cake is what I came up with." She nailed it . . . pun intended. "We used her cousin as a model because we didn't want to risk Sherice finding out what she was having," Marsha added.
The fake nails were decked out with both pink and blue, and a miniature cake accessory sat right on top of the middle finger. To get to the big reveal, someone lit the cake candle, and onlookers watched as the flame took off and turned blue (don't worry, no one was hurt, even though a few sparks flew!). See the nails in action ahead, and check out even more gender-reveal nail art ideas.
