This 30-Minute HIIT Workout Is Better For Weight Loss Than a 30-Minute Run
I know what it's like to exercise like crazy and not get the results you're after. I ran for years and years, and it wasn't until I started CrossFit (and monitored my calorie intake) that I started seeing results - bye-bye, belly fat!
Although lifting heavier weights was definitely part of my success, I'm convinced that trading in steady cardio for HIIT-type workouts (high-intensity interval training) was absolutely the key to my success! HIIT has proven to be one of the best workouts for weight loss, especially belly fat.
If this sounds familiar and you're tired of devoting endless hours to workouts without your body showing for it, you don't need to join a CrossFit box (unless you want to!) - just do this HIIT workout.
30-Minute HIIT Workout With Weights
Directions: After a five-minute dynamic warmup, complete each exercise for 40 seconds, then rest for 20 seconds before starting the next move. Repeat this 10-minute circuit for a total of three times to complete a 30-minute workout. Challenge yourself to see how many reps you can do of each move, and really push it during each high-intensity interval, knowing you have 20 seconds of rest to recover.
Equipment needed: Medium to heavy dumbbells (I use 15- or 20-pounders) and a kettlebell if you have it. Choose weights that tire your arms out, so don't go light - it's OK to have two sets of dumbbells on hand. If you need more details on each exercise, see the instructions ahead.
| Time | Exercise |
|---|---|
| 0:00-1:00 | 40 seconds burpees, 20 seconds rest |
| 1:01-2:00 | 40 seconds dumbbell thrusters, 20 seconds rest |
| 2:01-3:00 | 40 seconds burpees, 20 seconds rest |
| 3:01-4:00 | 40 seconds triceps push-ups, 20 seconds rest |
| 4:01-5:00 | 40 seconds burpees, 20 seconds rest |
| 5:01-6:00 | 40 seconds kettlebell swings, 20 seconds rest |
| 6:01-7:00 | 40 seconds burpees, 20 seconds rest |
| 7:01-8:00 | 40 seconds alternating dumbbell forward lunges (6 per side), 20 seconds rest |
| 8:01-9:00 | 40 seconds burpees, 20 seconds rest |
| 9:01-10:00 | 40 seconds V crunches, 20 seconds rest |
An Ob-Gyn Says Hanging Out in Sweaty Leggings Might Do This to Your Vagina
We already know that hanging out in a wet swimsuit can lead you straight to a yeast infection, which is pretty inconvenient during Spring and Summer months. It's natural to wonder if spending a long time in sweaty, post-workout leggings might have the same effect. We talked to an ob-gyn and have some tentatively good news: probably not - but you may want to change out of your sweaty clothes anyway.
A quick review: yeast infections are caused by a fungus, candida, that's naturally present in your vagina and kept in check by other bacteria. It only causes problems when it starts growing out of control. In a previous interview, ob-gyn Mache Siebel, MD, told POPSUGAR that wet swimsuits are a classic culprit for this because "yeast tends to grow in warm, moist areas." Spending time in a damp suit under the hot sun at the pool or beach can make you more prone to infection.

So, what about leggings? Erica Cahill, MD, an ob-gyn and cohost of The V Word podcast, told POPSUGAR that unlike swimsuits, sweaty leggings probably won't lead to a yeast infection. That doesn't mean you're good to hang out in them for hours on end, though. "If we're talking all day," she said, "that's probably just irritating for your skin on your vulva." That could make you feel itchy and uncomfortable, but it's not necessarily a yeast infection. The sure signs of a yeast infection, Dr. Cahill said, are itchiness, thick white discharge, and confirmed overgrowth of the candida fungus (which you'll need to see your ob-gyn to check for).
Without those, the skin around your vulva might just be irritated - better than a yeast infection, but still not fun. When in doubt and when possible, it's best to change, shower, and toss those leggings in the laundry.

Here's How to Clean Running Shoes, the Right Way
Now that we're in the midst of Spring cleaning everything possible, it's time to set our sights on our running shoes.
It's important to note that although the washing machine may be an alluring avenue, the regular cycle is typically not gentle enough for performance footwear, and can damage if not destroy your expensive and well-loved shoes.
If your shoes are machine-washable, make sure you put your shoes in some kind of encasing for added protection, like a shoe bag, washable laundry bag, or pillow case. Use a gentle cycle and cold water, wash with deodorizing pellets or sport-specific laundry detergent, and let them air dry.
Here are some options on getting your sneaks squeaky clean:
- Air 'em out! Remove the insoles if possible, and leave them outside to get some fresh air.
- Deodorize. Fill the shoes with baking soda, and set them outside overnight. The powder should absorb the odor, and can give you a cleaner slate to work with for the rest of the washing process. You can also try Odor-Eaters spray or Febreze fabric refresher.
- Hand wash laces. It's easy to take the laces out, give em a soapy scrub by hand, and air dry them before lacing back up.
- Prep for washing. Use a shoe brush or toothbrush with a bit of soapy liquid to brush off mud, dirt, or other stains.
- Give your shoes a soak. Place your sneaks in a bucket of warm, soapy water. Use gentle laundry soap, dish soap, or OxiClean (sometimes I use a combo). After letting them soak overnight, rinse them off in cold water and let them air dry.
- Wash your soles. If you have removable insoles, take them out and toss 'em in the wash on a gentle cycle. You can also hand wash them to ensure a gentler cleanse.
- Spot clean. Use a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser (I swear by them), a Tide To-Go pen, or a Clorox wipe to spot clean, depending on which area of the shoe you're cleaning. Few things have been as effective (for me) as the Magic Eraser when it comes to cleaning rubber or plastic outsoles.
- Maintain the clean! After you've cleaned your shoes, make sure you're wearing fresh, clean socks on every run to prevent odor build up. After you run, try placing dryer sheets in each shoe to keep them fresh and odor-free.
Tip: Never leave damp shoes inside, or enclosed for too long. It builds mildew, mold, and icky smells.
Don't Make These Spring Break Mistakes

Think ahead and avoid these common Spring break mistakes to have a healthy, stress-free trip.

We Asked an Expert If Intermittent Fasting Slows Down Your Metabolism - Here's What He Said
People often generalize and oversimplify metabolism, but it's actually an extremely complex process. As a quick refresher, metabolism relates to how your body produces energy from fat, protein, and sugar/carbohydrates and how it stores that energy. You've probably heard people say they have a slow or fast metabolism, but what they're actually referring to is their metabolic rate: how much energy/calories they burn in a day.
Strength training and eating more protein and healthy fats are expert-approved ways to improve (aka speed up) your metabolic rate. To find out if eating patterns such as intermittent fasting improve or slow down your metabolic rate, POPSUGAR spoke to Avigdor Arad, PhD, RDN, CDE, director of the Mount Sinai PhysioLab.
If You're Just Beginning to Walk for Weight Loss, This Is How Many Steps You Should Aim For
If the idea of joining a gym or attending an intense Spin class seems too intimidating, we have good news: you don't need high-intensity exercise to lose weight if you're a true beginner. Sure, it helps - HIIT has been shown to target belly fat, specifically - but you can increase your daily activity just by walking.
Walking can be an effective weight-loss tool, whether you're heading on a brisk walk after dinner or completing a walking treadmill workout. And even when you're not actively walking for exercise, racking up your steps can help you achieve your weight-loss goals. It's all apart of NEAT, which stands for nonexercise activity thermogenesis: the amount of activity you get in a day outside of formal exercise.
"The difference in energy expenditure between someone who is active all day and someone who is sedentary can run into hundreds and hundreds of calories," Eric Bowling, an NASM-certified personal trainer at Ultimate Performance who helps clients lose weight, told POPSUGAR.
One of the best ways to increase your NEAT is to get in more steps. If you're a true beginner and completely new to exercise, Eric said to set your goal to something a little more realistic: 6,000 steps a day. "Then as you get into the habit and regularly hit your daily step target, increase this gradually toward 10,000-12,000 steps per day," he said.
Track your steps with a pedometer, Fitbit, Apple Watch, or a free app on your smartphone. If you're like most Americans who drive to work, sit at a desk job for eight or so hours, and drive home only to veg out on the couch, then be strategic about getting your steps in: park your car further away from your destination, get off a few stops early if you take public transportation, walk the dog for a little longer, take a stroll around the block during your lunch break, or take the stairs at the office. Every little bit adds up, and increasing your NEAT is an essential key to achieving your weight-loss goals.
If You Want Nutella Without the Sugar, This Healthy Chocolate Spread Is The Answer
In a world where the myth of Nutella as a health food has sadly been debunked, those of us with chocolate nut butter addictions who don't want 21 grams of sugar per serving are left to get our fix elsewhere. And last month, we were celebrating when Bubble released the newest addition to our short healthy-Nutella-alternative list.
It's called Hella, and if early reviews and Instagram comments are anything to go by, it's pretty good. It's also impressively healthy: vegan, paleo, gluten-free, and with just 8 grams of sugar per serving. The butter's three ingredients - hazelnut, coconut sugar, and cacao - are all organic and, according to Bubble's website, sourced from sustainable farms in Italy, Indonesia, and Peru, respectively. The company ships it straight from its own facilities, too, meaning there are no preservatives added to prolong the shelf life.
Hella is Bubble's first in-house product; the website is also a marketplace for other food and lifestyle brands. After its release in January, it sold out in just one week. If you missed out, it's now restocked and available to buy ($9) from Bubble's website. Pass me my nut butter spoon, please.
If You Have Flat Feet, These Are the Expert-Approved Brands For Running Shoes
Running is great cardio for burning calories, toning your lower body, firing up your core, and giving yourself some mental space after a long day. And like most things, there are many ways you can incorporate it into your workout. You could map out a five-mile scenic run through your town. Or, if a HIIT treadmill session at the gym is more your thing, there's that too. (This 30-minute HIIT treadmill workout comes straight from an Equinox trainer.)
If you're a hardcore runner, you might be familiar with the term "pronation." This simply refers to the way your foot moves when it hits the ground during a walk or a run. For pronation to be considered "normal," after a heel strike, the ankle rolls slightly inward and the foot comes down flat. If you overpronate, your foot rolls too far inward and downward, so you have to rely heavily on pushing off of your big toe. This is common in people who have flat feet, but even those who aren't flat-footed can overpronate (like Maggie Ryan, our assistant fitness editor, who says she overpronates on her left foot only). If you have this problem when you run, you can suffer from shin splints, heel pain, plantar fasciitis (inflammation of the tissue from your heel to your toes), and even lower-back pain.
Westin Galloway, global product line manager for Performance Run and ASICS, explained to POPSUGAR in a previous interview that there are two main types of running shoes: shoes without additional stability, called "neutral," and shoes that help prevent overpronation with extra stability. We spoke to podiatrist Miguel Cunha, founder of Gotham Footcare, who further explained that you can visibly tell the difference between the two because "neutral" running shoes have flatter soles. Sneakers for people who overpronate have a supportive wedge built in under the arch to prevent the arch from collapsing or rotating inward too much.
The Best Running Shoes For Overpronators
Dr. Cunha gave POPSUGAR the names of five main brands he ranks superior:
- New Balance (Example: New Balance 1080)
- Saucony (Example: Saucony Triumph)
- Brooks (Example: Brooks Ariel 18)
- ASICS (Example: ASICS Gel-Nimbus; ASICS Gel Kayano)
- Mizuno (Example: Mizuno Wave Runner)
Dr. Cunha said these brands stand above the rest because they "invest more of their time and money into the medical research of human gait, biomechanics, and shoe design to develop a more well-engineered shoe." For people who overpronate or have flat feet, the key, he explained, is to find shoes with spacious and flexible toe boxes, firm midsoles, and rigid heel counters. Basically, you want "flexibility in the forefoot, where our toes naturally bend, while maintaining rock-solid rigidity in the heel of the shoe to protect our heels, where we absorb all the impact and shock with each step," he explained.
Here are some bonus features that these brands tend to have: a rubber sole to help absorb some of the shock, gel padding at the heel, and footbeds made from polyurethane or memory foam to alleviate pain and pressure and to provide cushion for your arches. It all sounds very good to us, but when in doubt, we recommend going to a store that specializes in running shoes because they're pros on pronation. (Plus, read up on Dr. Cunha's tips for replacing old sneakers here.)

Kate Middleton Has Worn This Dress Before, but Add Sleeves and It's a Whole New Look
Kate Middleton's closet is enviably vast, but even the Duchess of Cambridge likes to rewear old favorites every once in a while. Kate will double-dip into her collection of coats, skirts, shoes, and, on occasion, floor-length gowns, like she did on March 12 for the Portrait Gala 2019 in London. Just hours after she showed off her penchant for high-waisted pants while visiting a children's center, Kate went full glam for her night out in a familiar Alexander McQueen dress.
Despite a small alteration to the sleeves, eagle-eyed royal fans may recognize Kate's floral black gown from the 2017 BAFTAs. While the outfit used to be off-the-shoulder, Kate added a matching cap sleeve this time around, making the drop-waist dress a little more modest. It's a whole new look! She paired the gown with teardrop earrings, black heels, a matching clutch, and her sparkling engagement ring. Ahead, see more snaps of Kate's reworked gown.
Look Back at Some of the Wildest Met Gala Themes Over the Years
Forget Halloween - the biggest night for costumes every year is the Met Gala. The annual event, a fundraising gala for the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute, brings out the biggest stars of fashion and Hollywood to New York City for a glamorous, glittering evening. Although it's often talked about as a night of high fashion (and it definitely is!), the Met Gala is, at its heart, simply the coolest costume party of all time.
Every year, the gala has a different theme, and attendees are encouraged to interpret the theme however they choose. Though the ball has been taking place for decades, modern themes have ranged from the straightforward (honoring a specific designer, for instance) to the wild. Ahead of 2019's "Camp"-themed ball, take a look at some of the previous themes from recent years.

This Is What Happened When 7 Women Tried On 1 Pair of Overalls
The overalls in question? A Madewell skinny style in fresh Adrian wash (similar available here), complete with lived-in distress. The subjects who tried them on for size? Seven women with completely different body shapes.
At first glance, we loved the look of the denim from its fit to its length. These overalls have a straight, formfitting leg; have just enough slouch; and can be rolled to show off a strappy heel or pulled down over a pair of booties. Needless to say, we were all eager to make them work and style them so we were comfortable.
But could a handful of different women, with body types that run the gamut from curvy to super petite, all look good and, most importantly, feel good in the same jeans? Read on to see how seven of us worked the overalls, and find out what we thought about them. Spoiler alert: we just might have found the most flattering pair out there.
Kate Middleton Proves She Wears the Pants on Her Latest Outing
Most of us are used to seeing Kate Middleton wearing knee-length dresses and chic coats for her daytime engagements. On the rare occasions that she wears pants, it tends to be for sporty, outdoor settings, when she'll slip into a pair of skinny jeans. However, the duchess seems to have recently developed a penchant for high-waisted, wide-leg pants, and on Tuesday she gave a chic pair from Jigsaw a spin when she visited a children's center in London.
Maybe it's the influence of her sister-in-law, or perhaps Kate finally found the perfect fit for her body and stocked up on multiple pairs. Whatever it is, this look is definitely playing to her strengths. Kate teamed her smart black pants with another new designer piece: a pussy-bow blouse by Gucci in a color the duchess has been turning to time and time again recently. You can still shop the purple blouse, plus Kate's beige Aspinal of London handbag, if you hurry! Keep reading for a closer look at the outfit, and then add the royal-approved items to your basket.

J Lo was wearing a lightweight ivory crop-top set from Spell & The Gypsy consisting of a breezy asymmetrical skirt and bishop-sleeved shirt when Alex bent down on one knee to reveal the singer's new emerald-cut diamond. She completed her vacation-turned-engagement outfit with large gold Mattia Cielo hoops ($4,600), chunky rings, and taupe bohemian-style sandals. Obviously, her flashy new bling blended right in.

Whoa! Kim Kardashian's Campaign For Her New Eyewear Line Just Made Me Do a Triple Take
Kim Kardashian announced back in February that she was teaming up with Israeli designer Carolina Lemke on a line of affordable sunglasses, and it looks like she's calling back to last year's viral Yeezy campaign by promoting it with another team of doppelgängers. The reality star and KKW Beauty founder took to Instagram to share the campaign images for the lineup of shades on March 11, and I honestly had to look at it about three times before I realized that she didn't actually clone herself five times, she just surrounded herself with five models that look like her instead.
The sunglasses, according to Kim, will retail for less than $100 a pair. "It's a little crazy how expensive sunglasses can get," she told Vogue last month. "Especially if you lose your sunglasses a lot, or if you tend to break them or scratch them." The full collection will officially be available for purchase on April 3, though select items will be released on March 19. Read ahead to see a few more promo images.
Angelina Jolie's Dreamy Gown Features a Low-Cut Back - Perfect For Showing Off Her Tattoos!
Angelina Jolie basically floated down from the heavens to appear at the Dumbo premiere with her youngest kids on March 11. While the actress's children dressed in varying degrees of formal attire for their rare red carpet appearance, Angelina went full glam in an ethereal white Atelier Versace gown.
Her floor-length dress featured sheer accents along the neckline, a layered skirt, and a low-cut back - ideal for showing off a few of her many tattoos. She paired the gorgeous gown with minimal accessories, instead opting for a simple pair of Cartier drop earrings and strappy, open-toed sandals. That's chic as chic can be! Ciara's One-Piece Dips So Low in the Front and Back, We're Blasting "Goodies" in Its Honor
Quick question: remember that insanely sexy one-piece Ciara wore in her "Goodies" music video back in the day? Y'know, the black cutout suit she rocked with low-rise jeans while riding in the back of a red convertible on the way to a car-wash dance party? Well, she pretty much just wore the 2019 version of it while vacationing with her family in St. Barts, and yes, we're feeling all the early 2000s nostalgia.
After wearing a tropical bikini in Brazil last week, the 33-year-old singer slipped into a plunging black bathing suit for a Caribbean beach day with her kids and husband, Russell Wilson. Ciara's one-piece featured a contrasting rope belt and straps and quite the low-cut plunge in both the front and back. No wonder Russell placed his hand on her, er, assets while posing for a photo on the shores of St. Barts.
Read on to see just how deep Ciara's one-piece dipped in the front, then shop similar belted styles for yourself.
Disney's New Chocolate Donut Holes Are Smothered in a Decadent Fudgy Orange Glaze
Chocolate-lovers, rejoice! Disney World just keeps the food releases rolling, and the latest of the park's sweet selections is a set of donut holes covered in oozy chocolate sauce. Isle of Java, located in Disney's Animal Kingdom, has taken ordinary sugar-and-spice donut holes and smothered them in a decadent, fudge-like chocolate orange glaze. According to Disney Food Blog, the three donut holes are served on a stick, which is pretty lucky considering how much of a mess all of that chocolate sauce would likely make (not that we're complaining!). The blogger noted that the hint of orange in the glaze comes through a little more in the fragrance than the flavor of the treat.
Even though the Chocolate Donut Holes are not on Isle of Java's online menu just yet, they're available at the quick-service food spot now. Not Sure How to Clean an Area Rug? Keep 'em Looking Brand New With These 4 Steps
Area rugs can add a lot of style and function to almost any room. Put one in your kitchen to keep your feet comfortable while you're cooking or doing the dishes; make one the focal point of your living room while amping up the coziness; or put one next to your bed so you feel the plush, soft comfort when you swing your feet onto the floor every morning. And, of course, they can help you distract from that ugly flooring in your rental. But while area rugs are useful and beautiful, they're not immune to mess, and can attract all manner of grime, crumbs, spills, stains, and dust. The good news is, because they're so portable, they're pretty easy to clean with the right know-how. Here's what you need to do.
1. Vacuum Both Sides
With carpet, you can only vacuum one side, potentially pushing dust and crumbs further into the fibers rather than sucking them up. An area rug, on the other hand, can be vacuumed more thoroughly on both sides. Vacuum the fiber side first, then flip it over and vacuum the back. If it's still dusty and you have some outdoor space, you can hang it over a railing and gently knock the remaining dust out with a broom handle.
2. Wash the Rug With Carpet Shampoo
To give your rug a good, deep clean, wash it with a carpet shampoo. First, test out the shampoo on a discreet area of the rug to check that it's safe for the color and fibers of your rug. You should let the shampoo sit for a couple of hours to be sure. When you know the shampoo is safe, dampen your rug with clean water. Then, with a sturdy brush, work the shampoo into the carpet, paying special attention to stained areas. (Note: This method is best for low-pile rugs, and DIY washing your shag rug this way isn't a good idea. Leave shag rugs or other expensive rugs to a professional to prevent damage!)
3. Rinse the Rug
Once you've worked out all of the stains and dirt from your rug with the brush and shampoo, read the shampoo instructions and, if they say so, leave the shampoo to sit for a while. After this period of time, rinse your rug thoroughly. Carpet shampoo, much like hair shampoo, can leave a residue that will leave your rugs sticky, dull, and looking dirty.
4. Let the Rug Dry
Rugs can take a long time to dry depending on their thickness and material that they're made of, so we wouldn't recommend washing your rugs right before having dozens of people over for a dinner party. To dry your rug, first wring out as much excess water as you can. Then, hang it to dry in an area where it will be protected and undisturbed, like a garage or laundry room. It may take a day or longer to dry, but it's important to be patient and let it dry completely before putting it back in place. Finally, vacuum your rug one more time to bring the tufts and fibers back to life.

Out of My Way - Cotton Candy Grapes Are Back at Trader Joe's!
If you haven't done so already, go ahead and assemble your tag team for your next trip to Trader Joe's, because cotton candy grapes are officially back on shelves, and we'd hate for you to miss out on this golden opportunity to snag some. Cotton candy grapes are seedless green grapes that taste exactly like the hand-spun sugar clouds you used to eat at carnivals as a kid. They're a hybrid version of different grape vines and they're normally only sold during the Summer months, between August and September.
For the past few years, they've been a huge hit in grocery stores like Trader Joe's, Costco, Whole Foods, and Wegmans. Luckily for us, the grapes arrived at Trader Joe's early this year, and people are already going crazy for them. "This is the first year I have found them at Trader Joe's and bonus this early in the season. I brought a package home and OMG they are so sweet!" one happy shopper wrote on Instagram.
According to another user who spotted packages on shelves in her local store, they're being sold for $5.50 a pound. If you're looking for a way to satisfy your sweet tooth, you might want to run to Trader Joe's as quickly as you can.
We're Squealing Over This Adorable Soup Dumpling Nightlight
If you're a fan of all things cute and tiny, then chances are that you're familiar with kawaii culture. But if you aren't, the Japanese cultural style that embraces bright colors, cartoon animals, and putting adorable faces on inanimate objects is so fun. And a perfect example of kawaii is this Little B Dumpling Ambient Light ($12, originally $17) from Smoko. Whether your little one is afraid of the dark, or you just want a cuter way to help your guests find their way to the bathroom at night, we couldn't think of a better late-night companion.
Little B, Smoko's latest Dim Sum series character (Dim Sum being bite-size portions of food served in steamer baskets or little plates), is a Xiao Long Bao, or soup dumpling. Measuring four inches in height and made of soft silicone material, Little B is happy to perch just about anywhere you want to put him. He runs on batteries, but he's equipped with a one-hour auto shut-off feature to help your batteries last as long as possible.
Smoko is known for its super-kawaii (and super affordable) gifts and accessories, and this little guy is the perfect way to add a little light and whimsy to your home. We dare you to look at Little B's face and try to keep from squealing (or from feeling a sudden craving for Dim Sum).
6 Reasons Every Woman Should Live Alone at Least Once in Her Life
I'll be honest - I never thought I would be the type of person who enjoyed living alone. Since I've always loved being around other people, the thought of renting an apartment on my own sounded isolating and lonely. All four years of college, I shared a roof with either two or three other girls, and after I graduated, I moved in with my then-boyfriend and his brother. I always had someone to talk to, eat dinner with, and make me feel more secure if I heard strange noises in the middle of the night.
The following year, I signed a 13-month lease on a one-bedroom apartment with the same boyfriend, thinking if we got a place of our own, some of the issues in our relationship would dissipate. Not even four weeks elapsed before it became painfully clear - this wasn't where I wanted to be. And not the apartment, but the relationship. Maybe it was out of guilt, but when I finally gathered up the courage to break things off, I let him be the one to move out.
I'll never forget that feeling. I was 23 and freshly single, and not only was I stuck for another 12 months in an apartment I couldn't afford on my own, but I was now living by myself - something I swore I never had a desire to do. Over the course of the next year, I would surprise myself, not only with my ability to change a hard-to-reach light bulb or investigate late-night noises, but also with my own capability and courage. And 12 months later, I knew I was a stronger and more independent woman than the girl who signed the lease.
I firmly believe every woman should experience living alone at least once in her life. Here's why.
1. Being Alone Didn't Mean I Was Lonely
I was accustomed to coming home to someone and almost always having a breakfast buddy on the weekends. I assumed that walking through the door of an empty apartment would feel lonesome, and I feared the sound of silence. I actually spent the first few nights of my solitary living situation at my best friend's house, not yet ready to tackle a night on my own. When I finally gathered the courage to go all in, I realized that a one-bedroom apartment wasn't a jail cell. If I wanted to be surrounded by people, I invited friends over or met them out. I blared music when I was cooking or doing chores. I found that I could still have standing breakfast dates when I wanted them, but I also quickly learned that breakfast for one wasn't so bad, either. Feeling "lonely" rarely happened; I saw people when I wanted, and I stayed in when I chose to be alone.
2. I Learned to Face My Fears
I've always been someone who jumps at the tiniest creak in the middle of the night. To be totally candid, even as an adult, I thought I wouldn't be able to sleep if I didn't have someone else under the same roof. During the first few nights, I didn't sleep very well, and I must have checked under the bed or behind the shower curtain at least 10 times each. As it turned out, I just needed a little practice, and the fear of sleeping alone did eventually go away. After a couple anxious nights, I put on my big-girl pants, bought a nightlight, dead-bolted my door, and slept soundly.
3. I Felt Empowered and Self-Sufficient
This apartment was beautiful and a huge step above my college accommodations (no community beer pong table in the common area), but I only chose it because I thought I would have someone to split the expense. When I took over the lease, I had no idea how I would manage the high rent on my (very) meager salary. I was forced to figure it out, and I did. I created a budget for the first time in my life and got a second job working nights in a clothing store. Not only was I able to afford the rent, I was even able to shuffle money away each month into a savings account. I came home every night, looked around at the home I created, and felt proud.
4. I Learned How to Take Care of Myself
In the past, anytime my shower was clogged or I bought a new piece of furniture that needed assembly, there was always someone else present to help. When I bought a new bed right after my boyfriend moved out, I called a couple male friends to help, but it was the middle of the day and no one was free. Rather than wait, I decided to roll up my sleeves and figure out how to put it together myself. And I did it! Yes, I used piles of folded t-shirts to hold the frame upright while I tightened the screws, but I pulled it off. Honestly, I'll never forget that sense of accomplishment. I once thought I needed help with any laborious tasks around the house, but I learned that I was perfectly capable of handling most of them on my own.
5. There's Double the Closet Space
Every single closet, cabinet, and storage space was absolutely mine, and there was no one around to tell me that I owned too many pairs of shoes.
6. I Got to Know (and Love) Myself Better
I'm not sure why the prospect of spending more time with myself intimidated me. I learned that I was a pretty damn awesome person to hang out with. I also began to spend more time doing things to better myself - writing creatively, reading more books, taking online classes, even meditating. At a time in my life marked by confusion and uncertainty, I developed a deeper sense of love and awareness with myself.

The Best Thing My Mom Taught Me About Cooking
I was fortunate enough to grow up in a house where my mom cooked for our family of six just about every night. My mom is Italian and grew up with seven sisters and two brothers in New York, so her knack for cooking and love of food likely stemmed from sitting down to home-cooked meals with a family of 12 on a regular basis. You could say she knows a thing or two (thousand) about cooking.
Now that I'm an adult and love cooking just as much as she does (I even get paid to write about food!), I'm always trying to master the art of cooking as a 20-something on a budget. I rely on my mom's passed-down knowledge more than I could have imagined, and while she taught me plenty of recipes (everything I know about pasta, I owe it to her) and has answered an embarrassing number of my midcooking-panic questions over the phone, there's one solid piece of cooking advice that has stuck with me the most:
You can make something out of nothing.
As in, you don't need a recipe to cook something, and you don't have to have a full pantry and fridge to get dinner on the table. My mom is the queen of pulling scraps from the fridge and freezer and seemingly magically turning them into a cohesive, family-approved meal. If she had a dollar for every time one of her kids asked her, "What's for dinner?" she'd definitely be a millionaire, and what I didn't know growing up was that a lot of times she didn't even know what was for dinner as she began making dinner. But lo and behold, she'd make it happen. She'd usually aim to combine some type of protein with a starch and a vegetable, even if that meant throwing everything in a dish and baking it in the oven. My dad has lovingly and hilariously named these creations "bakes." "Oooh, what do we have here, a cheesy chicken bake?" he'll say if he peers into the oven and sees a casserole dish filled with various unidentifiable ingredients. And you know what? They were always delicious.
Thanks to my mom's ability to improvise, my family rarely resorted to takeout and instead had much healthier and more budget-friendly dinners, and I think this is a mantra that everyone can benefit from. While sometimes you might quite literally have nothing to work with, there are staples you should always have on hand that make this "no recipe" cooking method a lot easier: eggs (you can put anything in an omelet), chicken (keep it in the freezer and defrost the day you plan to use it), pasta (the ultimate blank-canvas ingredient), and frozen vegetables (no need to always buy fresh at the risk of letting them go bad). Also, save everything (that quarter of an onion will come in handy the next time you sauté garlic or want to add caramelized onions to something).
So now whenever I open my fridge and see a few random jars, some partially wilted spinach, and leftover chicken, I don't think, "time to go out." I think, "what would my mom make?"
