Did Taylor Swift Show Her Love For Her Boyfriend With This 1 Romantic Accessory?
Taylor Swift has been pretty hush-hush about her relationship with actor Joe Alwyn. The 29-year-old singer, who's starring in the film adaptation of the hit musical Cats, recently attended the film's wrap party with the rest of the crew. We noticed that while she was posing for a pic in a leopard print dress, Tay was also wearing a gold ring that's easy to miss at first glance. Many are speculating that her gold ring is emblazoned with "JA", her boyfriend's initials since she has worn a "J" pendant necklace in the past. Other fans are claiming that she's actually wearing an angel wing ring which was given to her as gift by Ed Razek after performing at the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show. Read on to get a closer look and shop similar versions of her ring ahead.

Beyoncé's Gown at the NAACP Image Awards Is Actually the Sexiest Suit Jacket in Existence
Beyoncé and Balmain are a winning combination. The singer recently attended the 2019 NAACP Image Awards, where she was honored as entertainer of the year, wearing an architectural number from Balmain's recent Spring 2019 Couture collection. The all-white outfit consisted of a floor-length jacket-dress hybrid with a bodysuit underneath it and a wide-brimmed hat, which Beyoncé removed once inside.
The striking award show look comes after Beyoncé wore a dress from the same Balmain collection to the Roc Nation Grammy Awards brunch. For the daytime event, she opted for a pastel '80s-style minidress from the brand. At the rate Beyoncé is flying through these Balmain designs, let's hope Olivier Rousteing has more where those came from.

The Reality of Sexual Assault You Didn't See in That Powerful Episode of Grey's Anatomy
I've watched Grey's Anatomy since the series began, and while the show has never shied away from tackling tough issues like gun violence, few episodes have resonated as deeply as "Silent All These Years," an hour-long exploration of sexual assault, domestic violence, and consent.
The storyline of the March 28 episode centers on a patient named Abby, who arrives at the hospital bruised and bleeding after being attacked at a bar. She immediately bonds with Jo, who guides her to the emergency room and performs the initial exam. When it becomes clear that Abby's trauma and injuries are consistent with sexual assault, Jo moves her to a private room and pages fellow surgeon Teddy Altman, who can administer a rape kit. Abby is resistant at first - scared of the uphill battle she could face when trying to build a case - but then Jo opens up about her own history of domestic violence and encourages Abby to collect the evidence while she can. "One day you might feel differently. You might want justice, and I want you to have everything you need to do that," she says.
In 2015, only 17 percent of hospitals with emergency departments employed a sexual assault forensic or nurse examiner.
It's a powerful moment that sparks a larger conversation between the doctors about what should and shouldn't be protocol when treating victims of sexual assault. But it wasn't this display of women supporting women or the very realistic portrayal of the procedure itself that struck me hardest. Instead, I could only think about how few survivors have access to even the most basic services.
In 2015, only 17 percent of hospitals with emergency departments employed a sexual assault forensic or nurse examiner, professionals who receive specialized education to collect evidence and testify in court should a case go to trial. And while bipartisan legislation has been introduced that would help increase access to these examinations nationwide, it has yet to pass. A congressional report found that victims in rural areas may have to travel up to two hours for a rape kit - a procedure before which you should not shower, change your clothes, or use the restroom. The same report explained that "exams performed by trained sexual assault forensic examiners may result in shortened exam time, better quality health care delivered to victims, higher quality forensic evidence collection, as well as better collaboration with the legal system and higher prosecution rates."
And yet this lack of quality care is just one of the obstacles women face in the pursuit of justice. It's been widely reported that hundreds of thousands of rape kits remain untested in police and crime lab facilities across the country, an issue raised in this episode of Grey's Anatomy and one programs like End the Backlog - an extension of the Joyful Heart Foundation - are working tirelessly to address.
Until then, ensuring that the evidence is collected at all should be a priority. To show your support for the Survivors' Access to Supportive Care Act, contact your senator or US House representative. If you're a registered nurse, you can find information on specialized training from the International Association of Forensic Nurses.
If you or a friend are a victim of sexual assault, you can visit RAINN or call its hotline at 1-800-656-4673 to receive confidential support from a trained staff member.

Reduce Your Anxiety and Boost Your Mood in 12 Minutes With This Simple Strategy
Think about the last time you were in a bad mood. Maybe you texted your best friend to cheer yourself up, tried to cure it with a little retail therapy, or isolated yourself and binge-watched your favorite TV shows and movies to feel better. There's no right or wrong way to improve your mood, but according to a recent study in the Journal of Happiness Studies, there's a really easy, and quick, way to improve your mood!
Researchers at Iowa State University had college students walk around a building for 12 minutes testing one of three techniques meant to reduce anxiety and increase one's happiness or well-being. The first strategy, loving-kindness, required students to look at people and think to themselves, "I wish for this person to be happy." The second strategy, interconnectedness, required students to look at people and think about how they're connected to each other. The researchers also suggested the students think about the hopes and feelings they may share. The third strategy, downward social comparison, had students look at people and think about how they may be better off than the people they encountered.
It may sound weird to think about others when it's your mood you're trying to boost, but, "Walking around and offering kindness to others in the world reduces anxiety and increases happiness and feelings of social connection," Douglas Gentile, one of the researchers and a professor of psychology at Iowa State University, said.
Instead of wishing well for others and thinking about their emotions, students in the control group were told to focus on how people looked, paying attention to things like the color and texture of their clothing and their hair, makeup, and accessories. Researchers compared both groups and found that students who practiced the loving-kindness strategy felt happier, more connected, caring, empathetic, and less anxious.
Who knew getting out of a funk could be as easy as thinking kind thoughts towards others while taking a 12-minute walk? The next time you find yourself in a bad mood, press pause, go on a walk, and wish everyone you see happiness and watch your bad mood melt away.

A Pro Hockey Trainer Tells Us His Favorite Exercise That Will Work Your Whole Body
Exercises that work your entire body are the best of both worlds if you're trying to target multiple muscle groups at once and also save time. Take, for instance, squat presses or burpee rows. POPSUGAR spoke to Tommy Powers, the strength and conditioning coach for the NHL Florida Panthers and founder of Empowers Performance, about his favorite full-body exercise. His top pick? The hex bar deadlift.
The hex bar deadlift, Tommy told us, requires total body strength because you work your core, arms, and legs (yes, that means your booty, too!). "You're not doing a ton of axial loading [read: forcing] through the spine," so he said this is a safer exercise to do compared to others that might compromise your back. It's still important, as with every move, to engage the proper muscle groups and remember your form. Tommy said that, as you lift the hex bar off the ground, you should be engaging your abdominals, retracting your shoulders (pulling them together), and keeping your head and chest up. "Once your are in extension, ensure that you're in a neutral pelvic position and that your glutes and abdominals are engaged at the top of the movement," he instructed.
Ahead, check out exactly how to do hex bar deadlifts. Also, you don't need to add weight to the hex bar if you don't feel comfortable; it alone can weigh around 45 pounds. Your entire body will thank you!

I Lost 20 Pounds in 3 Months by Combining These Popular At-Home Programs
I'm not sure how it happened. OK, maybe I do know. After a year of eating (and drinking) more calories than I should, my usually slight frame was only 10 pounds lighter than it had been when I was nine months pregnant with my now 3-year-old son. To be clear, I gained 40 pounds during my pregnancy, so three months ago when I climbed onto the scale and saw that my food baby weighed almost as much, I knew I needed to do something.
So, like millions of women before me, I turned to WW to help manage my eating. Later, I started doing the BBG fitness program, which consists of three 28-minute resistance training sessions and three to four cardio sessions per week. In three months, I lost 20 pounds, and I'm still losing weight. While I may not be at my end goal yet - after all, I'm only at week eight of the 12-week BBG program - I have found that these two programs are exactly what I needed to help me finally make fitness a priority. Here are the tips and tricks I've learned along the way and continue to use to find the healthiest version of myself.
Burger King Is Testing Meatless Whoppers - and No, This Isn't an April Fools' Joke
Vegetarians, get ready to do a happy dance, because Burger King is testing out a meat-free version of its famed Whopper sandwich! On April 1, the fast food chain began rolling out a limited supply of its new Impossible Whopper, which thankfully isn't a cruel April Fools' Day joke. The vegetarian-approved menu addition stars a beefless, plant-based patty from the brand behind the Impossible Burger, along with the usual Whopper fixings, including lettuce, tomatoes, onions, pickles, ketchup, mayo, and a sesame seed bun.
The Impossible Whopper is currently only available at 59 select Burger King locations is St. Louis (those lucky Missourians!). Our fingers are certainly crossed for these to roll out nationwide so we can give 'em a try for ourselves soon!
You Might Be Overeating on Keto - 2 RDs Explain Why and How to Fix It
If you've ever heard anything about keto, or even tried it yourself, you probably know that one of the big benefits it touts is that feeling of fullness. That's thanks to the fact that it's such a fat-heavy diet, and fats are extremely filling, registered dietitian Kristin Kirkpatrick from the Cleveland Clinic's Wellness Institute told POPSUGAR.
It's still possible to find yourself overeating on keto, though, especially if you've had those habits in the past. Knowing that the diet is supposed to keep you fuller and "fix" that problem can make it feel even worse. Getting past overeating is about finding what caused it in the first place.
Overeating Is Mental
"Overeating is more of a mentality," said registered dietitian Michele Fumagalli from the Northwestern Medicine Running Clinic. If you're continuing to overeat on a high-fat, low-carb diet, she said, it could be that your body is simply used to overeating. Even more importantly, you might already be in the habit of ignoring your natural feelings of hunger or fullness.
When it comes to overeating, Kristin said, "I often tell my patients that I can help them fix the food they're eating, but weight-loss success or maintenance isn't just about what you put into your mouth." Overeating has a lot to do with other factors in your life: where you live and work, your age, your family support, and even your genetics, for a start. If a diet high in satiating fats isn't fixing that overeating habit, it probably has less to do with your stomach and more to do with those other factors.
You Might Still Have Carb or Sugar Cravings
On the keto diet, only five to 10 percent of your macronutrient intake should be carbs. "The whole concept behind keto," Kristin explained, "is that you deplete glucose and glycogen stores, and when all the preferred fuel is gone, you burn fat and release ketone bodies." Pushing the limits of that carb boundary can put you at risk for a binge. "Once you 'feed' yourself even small amounts of carbohydrates from any source, your body will kick out of ketosis and go back to carbs, its preferred fuel," Kristin said.
This sounds biological, but both dietitians agreed that it's still related to your mindset. "There's a diet cycle," Michele told POPSUGAR. "We go on a diet, like keto, and we deprive ourselves of foods that we love or yearn for." Maybe we get cravings or simply miss eating the food; either way, at some point, we finally give in. And once you start eating that food you've been longing for, it feels almost impossible to stop. On top of that, Kristin said, if you know you're already out of ketosis, "maybe the feeling is that you might as well enjoy the binge while you're out of it."
How Do I Stop Overeating on Keto?
If you're struggling with overeating on keto, Kristin offered two tips.
- Track your food. She recommended using a keto-friendly app. There are lots, but MyFitnessPal or KetoDiet are good places to start. Keeping track of your food on an app will hold you accountable and emphasize it when you go over your carb or protein limits, she said.
- Journaling about overeating. Since overeating is so mental, your binges might be stemming from emotions outside of your feelings of hunger or fullness. Jot down what you're feeling when you're overeating: boredom or stress, in particular, might be causing a binge. You might even be tempted to overeat, "because the keto rumor is that you can eat fat all day, every day, and lose weight," Kristin said. Sorting through the mental urges and emotions behind your overeating can help you identify the real issue and move past those binges.
"Keto is a hard diet to make a lifestyle," Michele said. "It's all or nothing." To conquer your overeating urges from both a mental and physical standpoint, you'll have to address the cravings and emotions that are pushing them. It's hard but definitely possible, and it's a process that will help heal your relationship with food, no matter which diet you choose.

Katie Ledecky Got Midnight Tacos With Steph Curry, Still Went to Swim Practice in the Morning
The 2020 Tokyo Olympics are 483 days away, not that I have this countdown clock bookmarked or anything. If you miss watching five-time Olympic gold medalist Katie Ledecky smash world records and literally lap her competitors as much as I do, the newest episode in NBA star Steph Curry's YouTube series 5 Minutes From Home is the exact little slice of joy that you need.
The show is like a mini-Carpool Karaoke, minus the music; Steph and his guests (who have included rappers, YouTube stars, and the mayor of Oakland) meet up after a basketball game, chill in the back of a Lyft, shoot the breeze, and usually make a pit stop for food. This episode features Katie and the 9-year-old Golden State Warriors fan Riley Morrison, who called Steph out for not including girls' sizes in his shoe line. (To which he replied, "You're right, and let's design a pair together.")
In the six-minute video, Katie, Steph, and Riley tell dad jokes (so many dad jokes), try on swim caps (shout-out to Steph for putting his on sideways at first, because same), and pull over for tacos at a food truck. The ride started right before midnight - and Katie had a training session at 6:30 a.m. the next day.
Steph was impressed with her dedication. "That speaks to your success being no accident," he said in the video.
"Can't miss a practice, right?" Katie said. "I like practice more than I like racing!"
In an interview with the Washington Post afterwards, Katie said, "I knew it was going to be a late night, and I told Steph that . . . He knows what that kind of practice schedule was like. But I didn't want to pass up that kind of opportunity." At the end of the (very long) day, it was worth it. "I couldn't stop smiling, the whole time we were in the car," she said.
Watch to the end of the video to see them chow down on tacos and hear Steph shamelessly invite himself to one of Katie's training sessions. Her reply? "You have a cap now. Hop in."
Love Oat Milk but Want More Protein? Califia Farms Is Coming to Your Rescue
Nowadays it seems like you can make dairy-free milk out of almost anything - almonds, pea protein, and even oats! Oat milk is a good source of calcium and vitamin D, and dietitians told POPSUGAR in a previous interview that some brands are also slightly higher in fiber than other dairy-free milks, and this fiber benefits digestion and heart health. Generally, it has more calories than other plant-based milks and has about half the amount of protein as regular cow's milk (for reference, soy milk normally has protein comparable to cow's milk). So, what's a girl to do if she wants protein with her dairy-free milk made from oats? Enter Califia Farms with Übermilks.
Califia Farms, which makes a variety of plant-based milks, creamers, and yogurts, is bringing Übermilk exclusively to Whole Foods in May and Target at the end of June, a spokesperson confirmed. This milk will come in three flavors: unsweetened, unsweetened vanilla, and chocolate. Each features a blend of oat milk (duh), pea protein, sunflower oil and seeds, and flaxseed oil, and is rich in vitamins and essential amino acids. But the best part? Übermilk has eight grams of protein per eight-ounce serving.
Let's look more closely at the numbers: unsweetened Übermilk contains 140 calories, one gram of fiber, eight grams of protein, and two grams of sugar per one-cup serving. To compare, Califia Farms' Oat Barista Blend has only one gram of protein per serving, 130 calories, three grams of sugar, and zero fiber. It's a nondairy dairy miracle! Ahead, check out the full nutritional information for all three flavors of Übermilk, provided by Califia Farms. We're so ready for Spring.

A Relationship Therapist Says This Is the Biggest Act of "Real Love and Romance"
If you look back on the fights you and your partner have had, many of them were probably easily preventable. Regardless of whose fault it is, both sides have control of the situation. It's up to you to decide how you want to handle it, whether it's feeding the flame or being the bigger person. How many of your arguments have been over something ridiculously trivial? And how many weren't worth the stress? Chances are that it was a majority. Constant bickering can damage your relationship in the long run, and if you don't make it a habit to catch yourself in the heat of the moment, you'll only continue to cause strain.
We spoke with K-Y's resident sex expert and relationship therapist, Dr. Laura Berman, to find out how couples can relieve the tension in a situation, and turns out it's a lot easier than you'd expect. If you've ever gotten mad at your SO because it seems like they just "don't get it," it's probably because they don't. But that also doesn't mean they shouldn't attempt to better understand you on their end.
"Often the partner is like, 'What's the big deal?', and that feels like a slap in the face," Dr. Berman told POPSUGAR. "So, even if they don't know why every candle in the house has to match, if they facilitate and assist, that is an act of real love and romance because it shows that even if they don't understand it or think it's important, it's important to you, so they're engaging and investing in it."
Dr. Berman continued to say how your initial reaction may be to try to talk your partner out of it - like stressing over matching candles, in this instance - or to respond to their irritation with anger. But as you probably already know, reacting in those ways rarely ends well. Real love, as she mentioned, is demonstrated by small acts of appreciation. The fact that you have zero interest in candles is not the point here. By putting aside your own opinions (or lack thereof) on something your partner clearly does care about, you're showing how much you value them and your relationship.
"It's really important that each of you take responsibility for the bar that you're setting and the unnecessary stress that you're creating," Dr. Berman said.
So the next time you catch yourself rolling your eyes or questioning your SO, pitch in instead. Don't get annoyed that they want to watch sports or bad reality TV - take it as an opportunity to spend time together. Seeing things from a different perspective will greatly benefit your relationship!

Before You Travel in 2019, Here Are the Best (and Worst) Airlines, According to Experts and Fliers
When planning a trip in the US, it's hard to decide which airline is actually best-suited for you and your travel style. We've all heard horror stories of airlines having poor customer service, hidden baggage fees, or uncomfortable seats, so when it's time to book your flight and you have to choose between a few different airlines, you should compare the pros and cons. Whether you're in coach or first class, the airline can make or break your travel experience.
That's why I've asked travel and airline experts, researched each airline, and read through the most recent 2019 customer reviews to bring you the 11 major US-based airlines ranked from worst to best for this year.
I KonMari'd My Apartment, and Here's What I Bought So That It Continues to Spark Joy For Years to Come
I came, I saw, I KonMari'd. Like it did for so many others, Marie Kondo's Netflix series Tidying Up sparked something in me to finally get organized in 2019. When her book The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up first came out, I resisted the movement. "I'm really more of a more is more kind of gal," I thought at the time. Meanwhile, my small one-bedroom apartment that I share with my husband was slowly accumulating dusty piles of useless, well, crap in every nook and cranny. Closets were overflowing, bookshelves bending under pressure, floor space was becoming a precious commodity. Something had to change.
Enter: KonMari, 2019 edition. This time around, I was ready to embrace the magic, and honestly, it was life-changing. I followed Marie Kondo's steps in order, tackling each of her recommended categories on the weekends for the first two months of the year. I would make it my goal to finish a category in a weekend, including donating, selling, and trashing what I didn't want to keep by Sunday night so that I could start fresh the following weekend. As bag after bag of old-school papers, blurry photographs of scenery from a vacation we took in 1998, stained towels, broken kitchen utensils, unused hand-me-downs, ill-fitting clothing, and just plain garbage left our apartment, a literal weight was lifted off of me. I would do a happy dance every Sunday night as another category bit the dust. Now that my apartment was free of what didn't spark joy, it was time to make some strategic new purchases.
While it may seem counterintuitive, the process of KonMari-ing (or Spring cleaning) does involve purchasing new things along the way. Besides the obvious boxes and baskets, drawer organizers, and other storage and organizational products, clearing away the clutter causes you to reevaluate what's left and possibly replace that side table your parents gave you years ago that you never really liked or finally find some smarter space-saving solutions for art that's sat in your closet or clutter taking up valuable counter space in your kitchen.
Ahead, here are the organizers, furniture pieces, and other home products I bought to make sure my apartment continues to spark joy and stay organized for years to come.
Meghan Markle and Abigail Spencer Have Such a Genuine Friendship, TBH, I'm a Little Jealous
Meghan Markle and Abigail Spencer met as costars on Suits, but their friendship goes far beyond the USA Network legal drama series. In addition to sharing a Sept. 4, 1981 birthday (what are the odds?), Meghan and Abigail have always supported each other and spoken highly of one another. Abigail was present at both the royal wedding and Meghan's NYC baby shower, and most recently, Abigail gushed about what a great mom Meghan is going to be. "I think it goes without saying, she's incredible," Abigail told E! News. "She's incredible and that baby is so lucky to have them as their parents." To be honest, I'm a little jealous of their friendship. See Meghan and Abgail's cutest moments ahead!

Pete Davidson Tried (and Failed) to Keep It Together During This SNL Skit With Sandra Oh
You may think there's nothing funny about SAT test prep, but you obviously haven't sat in one of Sandra Oh's classes before. During the Killing Eve star's SNL hosting gig on March 30, Oh played a substitute teacher tasked with taking a group of high schoolers through some practice questions. Unfortunately, the students are in the mood to wax philosophical, and their dramatic monologues have nothing to do with the correct multiple choice answers.
This idea alone is worth a good chuckle, but once you spot Pete Davidson break character in the background of the sketch, you're bound to crack up too. Catch Pete's breaking point in the full sketch above - he tried so hard to hide the laughs!
This Is the Only Lotion I've Ever Tried That Doesn't Make My Body Feel Greasy
I am obsessive about my skin care - at least, when it comes to my face. I'm diligent about taking off my makeup before bed and applying my daily serums, but if I'm honest, the rest of my body is a different story. For one, I like to work out in the morning, which means I like to shower in the morning. And normally, applying lotion means I need to sit for at least five minutes before I can put my clothes on. I have neither the time nor the patience for this, so more often than not, while my face looks healthy and glowing, my body could use some help.
One day, a fellow editor showed me this Lanolips Everywhere Multi Cream ($17). I took it home, and didn't give it much thought until I got out of the shower the next day. And, oh my goodness. This lotion is not sticky. Let me repeat: this lotion is not sticky. I can apply this, and by the time I'm finished with my (very quick) skincare routine, I'm ready to put my clothes on. Which means, come Summer, I'll have the softest skin ever, and for less than $20, you can, too.
John Cena Goes on a Romantic Date After Ex Nikki Bella Confirms Her New Relationship
It looks like John Cena is ready to jump back in the dating ring pool following his split from Nikki Bella! Less than a year after calling off their engagement, the 41-year-old WWE superstar was recently spotted out on a date with a brunette woman in Canada. While the woman's identity has yet to be revealed, the pair seemed to have no problem showing off PDA as they held hands and smiled for the cameras.
John and Nikki dated on and off for six years before eventually going their separate ways last July. Coincidentally, Nikki just confirmed her relationship with her former Dancing With the Stars partner, Artem Chigvintsev. Even though Nikki and John are no longer together, she did say it would "kill her" to see John with another woman. Hopefully she's doing OK!
An Explanation For Who - and What - the "Tethered" Are in Jordan Peele's Us
Jordan Peele's second feature film, Us, is horrifying, to be sure. But by the time the credits start to roll, you might find yourself a little bit . . . confused, shall we say. Between all of the complex layers, hidden meanings, and creepy scares that are introduced over the course of the horror film, there is a lot to unpack. Who are the Tethered? And what do they want? Where did they come from? Put on your red jumpsuit and strap in, because we're breaking it all down ahead.
Warning: BIG spoilers for Us will follow! You've been warned.
In the beginning of Us, we meet the Wilsons: parents Adelaide and Gabe (Black Panther costars Lupita Nyong'o and Winston Duke) and their preteen kids, Zora and Jason (Shahadi Wright Joseph and Evan Alex). Together they travel to Adelaide's late grandmother's home in Santa Cruz, CA, for a Summer vacation, but it's immediately clear that something is up with Adelaide. As she confesses to Gabe later that night, she's haunted by a traumatic event that happened on the boardwalk there when she was a kid. No matter how many glasses of Rosé Adelaide has with their family friends Kitty and Josh Tyler (Elisabeth Moss and Tim Heidecker), she's unable to move past it.
In the flashback to young Adelaide, we see her wander off from her parents at the boardwalk's amusement park on her birthday, ending up in a house of mirrors attraction all by herself. The storm raging outside cuts the power, and Adelaide stumbles through the funhouse, looking for an exit. But all of a sudden she's faced with a living, breathing reflection of herself - a little girl who looks exactly like her, down to her pigtails and the "Thriller" t-shirt her father won her at an arcade game just moments before. Adult Adelaide goes on to tell Gabe that she ran out after that, but he finds it hard to believe her story until the entire family is soon confronted by demonic versions of themselves (who we learn are called the "Tethered") that same night.
The Wilson family are then held hostage in their living room by their doubles. Red (Adelaide's jumpsuit-wearing double who is the only Tethered to actually speak) is in charge and makes it clear that the doubles have arrived to kill the Wilsons and take their place in the real world. The Wilsons are able to escape, with both Gabe and Zora killing their Tethered doppelgängers, Abraham and Umbrae. They arrive at the home of the Tylers (who have been brutally killed by their own doppelgängers at this point) and learn from a news broadcast that the entire country is under attack by murderous doubles. Where did they even come from?!
Essentially, the Tethered are the result of a government-funded nationwide cloning project. In some ways the experiment was a success, in that it was able to replicate human subjects physically, down to every last hair and molecule. However, the science was unable to copy the mind and soul, so to speak, of the original specimens. This was a problem since the whole point of the experiment was to create doubles to control the people they were modeled after. The Tethered were therefore left physically perfect but mentally damaged - with the exception of Red, none of them can even speak (they just howl and groan).
Red fills Adelaide in on this during their showdown at the end of the film, when she also reveals that once the government realized the clones were basically useless, it left them to rot in a series of underground tunnels lurking under the continental United States. As for why Red is able to speak and think and lead the rest of the Tethered in a murderous uprising against the people above ground? Well, that's where things get REALLY complicated.
Adelaide confronts Red in the underground tunnels beneath the hall of mirrors she entered as a child, encountering multiple rooms filled with rabbit cages, bunk beds, and classrooms. Adelaide comes across Red in one of the classrooms as the latter stands in front of a chalkboard covered in drawings of stick figures holding hands.
Red has always been different from the others, standing out with her voice and intelligence. Her plan all along has been to kill the original copies of the Tethered and form a line inspired by the 1986 charity event Hands Across America, in which people joined hands in a human chain for 15 minutes. According to Red, the line is a symbolic act to bring awareness to the Tethered's existence.
Adelaide succeeds in killing Red in the end, but that's not where the horror ends - through one final, chilling flashback that occurs as Adelaide is driving her family to safety in Mexico, the truth is revealed.
After young Adelaide (played by Madison Curry) encounters her double in the dark of the hall of mirrors, we see that the young doppelgänger actually knocks her out and drags her underground into the tunnel, handcuffs her to a bunk bed, and switches places with her. The "real" Red leaves Adelaide there to suffer with the Tethered, taking her place in the world above; this is why Adelaide's parents felt their daughter had changed after the day at the beach, why "Red" is the only Tethered who can speak, and why she leads a rebellion.
The metaphor of the Tethered is a bit convoluted, to be totally honest. But Peele's final shot, which is an aerial view of thousands of the Tethered linking hands across a mountain range in California, is yet another reminder of the importance of the Hands Across America imagery.
The 1986 charity event was meant to raise awareness for famine in Africa and homelessness in the United States, but here, Peele presents another way to look at it: people of privilege turning a blind eye to those in poverty, unable (or unwilling) to see the true nature of our nation's shameful history of subjugation until the fatal consequences of their actions are literally staring them in the face.
After all, like Red says after she breaks into Adelaide's home at the start of the film, the Tethered are "Americans."

Do I Feel Too Old For These Pink Barbie Puma Sneakers? Hell to the No
Listen, 3-year-old me, I'm buying these Puma x Barbie trainers for you and I don't ever want to hear a peep out of you about how I've left my childhood in the dust. I still book Disney trips over Caribbean vacations, for crying out loud. But also, if I'm being honest, these sneakers are cool. I love the powder pink, yellow, and turquoise combo that somehow feels more sporty than girly. And actually, I'd 100 percent work out in these logo cycling shorts, which are, in my opinion (and I'm sure yours too), cooler than Kim Kardashian's Yeezy bikers. For you, 3-year-old Sarah, I'll buy this whole damn collection of gear and wear it proudly while you sit at home giving makeovers to dolls with permanent marker and scissors in your life-size Barbie ball gown. Love, 26-year-old me, who totally doesn't still keep her old stuffed animals stowed away under her bed.
