Ditch Distractions and Get Productive With a Method Called "Deep Work"

I first heard about the idea of "deep work" while listening to a podcast on my way to work. NPR's Shankar Vedantam interviewed Cal Newport, a computer scientist and Georgetown University professor, about his research and insights on the subject.

Newport shared how he manages to get a seemingly impossible amount of work done - including writing books, publishing academic papers, and teaching courses - all while leaving work by 5:30 p.m. and making time for his family and personal life.

I don't have a lot in common professionally with Newport, but his success is undeniable and inspired me to check out his book Deep Work: Rules For Focused Success in a Distracted World to learn about how I could be more productive and improve my focus.

What is deep work?

Deep work boils down to the relatively simple idea that working distraction-free allows you to both improve your professional capabilities and produce higher-quality, more valuable work.

Take a second to think about your work habits. How often do you stop to check social media? Or immediately look up whatever random idea pops into your head? Or answer an email the second you receive it? In the span of writing this alone, I've had to resist the urge to do everything from chiming in on a funny group text to looking up recipes for the banana muffins that I would like to make later.

Newport argues that the state of multitasking and constant distraction we live in is seriously affecting our work. It usually feels like there's never enough time to do everything we want to as a result of the daily grind of unfulfilling but necessary tasks. And having fragments of our focus in a million places at once can reduce our ability to contribute our best work in the current moment. Deep work tackles this by saying you can reevaluate your habits to use your time more productively, create more meaningful work, and get better at what you do so you can accomplish more than you ever thought possible.

How can I try deep work?

A lot of the things distracting us aren't inherently bad; they are often a necessary part of our jobs or day-to-day life . . . which unfortunately makes it even more difficult to overcome the habits affecting our ability to concentrate.

Even though it would take some serious effort, I couldn't shake the idea that I was holding myself back by being unwilling to challenge myself to work smarter.

Here are some of the top tips I learned from Deep Work that you can apply to help you crush your goals both at work and at home.

1. Block off time to focus.

You probably spend less time than you realize getting down to work without interruption. If you put it in your calendar, it's easier to commit to a distraction-free block of time. Get to work before everyone else or find an hour when you can sit in a quiet place and knock out an assignment or make headway on a project. Set ground rules for that time, like no emails or Twitter breaks. It seemed counterintuitive to me to think I could simply decide when I would do good work. I tend to wait for a good idea (or deadline) to strike. However, the experts say this is a common mistake. We can facilitate inspiration by setting aside time to work hard.

2. Set boundaries to stay on track.

In many office cultures, we often try to look really busy so everyone else knows we're working. Newport calls this "busyness as a proxy for activity" - basically, doing lots of stuff in a visible manner but not actually getting a whole lot done, besides feeling more stressed. We all get sucked into situations like scrambling to be the first to answer the boss's email. But stopping what you're doing to answer every message that comes through makes it a lot more difficult and time-consuming to jump back into the task you were previously working on, even if you don't realize it. Rather than having my email always open in front of me, I started trying to wait 30 minutes in between inbox checks. It turns out not all that much can't wait a half-hour for your response. You don't have to be a hermit or risk getting in trouble, but you can take back some control over your workday to accomplish a bigger goal.

3. Know when to disconnect.

As we're starting to learn more about the benefits of taking time to disconnect, it's not uncommon to see people "detox," whether it's one day per week device-free or a whole month. Newport takes a different approach. Instead, he says you should schedule time when you are allowed to go online, like during lunch or once an hour. That way you give yourself a break from focusing, rather than trying to take a break from distraction. For this to work, it's crucial that you stick to your rule. This means no defaulting to your phone to kill time while you wait for your friend at the bar or for a meeting to start, unless it's during a scheduled break. Making this a habit gives your brain a workout in resisting mindless distraction, even when you really want to give in to boredom with something more entertaining.

4. Schedule your free time, too.

You know that one friend who seems to magically have time for a demanding job and a fabulous social life, plus traveling, volunteering, and on and on, all while looking great and getting eight hours of sleep a night? Well, she's not necessarily any more amazing than you, but she probably does schedule out her time carefully. Just like you plan your workday, plan what you'll do in your downtime. These things don't necessarily have to be productive. You can plan to do relaxing activities like watching a show, taking a bath, or calling a friend, all of which give your brain a chance to relax and recover. But you'll probably find that by paying more attention to what you're doing (and not falling into deep, dark Instagram black holes), you'll free up time to dig in to other interests too, like brushing up on a language app or trying to cook more.

We've all seen or shared the "You have the same amount of hours in a day as Beyoncé" quote on Pinterest or Instagram. But it's only relatable because it's true! I suspect the people we admire most aren't only super hardworking or talented. They also make the most of their time, even when it's difficult to do so. If left unchecked, distractions impair our ability to filter out the noise and focus on building the best version of ourselves. It's not easy to make the changes that Newport lays out in Deep Work, but if you want to take your career goals to the next level, it's certainly worth the effort to try.

12 Cell Phones From the Early 2000s That'll Make You Miss the Good Old Days

The early 2000s were a golden era for cell phones. We might not have had anywhere near the amount on offer as we do now, but every new phone release felt exciting and special. There were a lot of phone options to choose from (they all looked different!), phone cases and accessories to buy, and games of Snake to play. And while we all have shiny new smartphones that let us access the internet (and just about anything else) with the touch of our finger nowadays, let's be honest, you'll never love a phone more than your first one. The one that had a tiny screen, stayed almost fully charged for a whole week, and you needed two hands to hold as it was so heavy. Take a trip down memory lane and keep reading for 12 old school cell phones that you'll kinda wish were still around (Sidekicks forever!).

A Relationship Therapist Says This Is the Biggest Act of "Real Love and Romance"

If you look back on the fights you and your partner have had, many of them were probably easily preventable. Regardless of whose fault it is, both sides have control of the situation. It's up to you to decide how you want to handle it, whether it's feeding the flame or being the bigger person. How many of your arguments have been over something ridiculously trivial? And how many weren't worth the stress? Chances are that it was a majority. Constant bickering can damage your relationship in the long run, and if you don't make it a habit to catch yourself in the heat of the moment, you'll only continue to cause strain.

We spoke with K-Y's resident sex expert and relationship therapist, Dr. Laura Berman, to find out how couples can relieve the tension in a situation, and turns out it's a lot easier than you'd expect. If you've ever gotten mad at your SO because it seems like they just "don't get it," it's probably because they don't. But that also doesn't mean they shouldn't attempt to better understand you on their end.

"Often the partner is like, 'What's the big deal?', and that feels like a slap in the face," Dr. Berman told POPSUGAR. "So, even if they don't know why every candle in the house has to match, if they facilitate and assist, that is an act of real love and romance because it shows that even if they don't understand it or think it's important, it's important to you, so they're engaging and investing in it."

Dr. Berman continued to say how your initial reaction may be to try to talk your partner out of it - like stressing over matching candles, in this instance - or to respond to their irritation with anger. But as you probably already know, reacting in those ways rarely ends well. Real love, as she mentioned, is demonstrated by small acts of appreciation. The fact that you have zero interest in candles is not the point here. By putting aside your own opinions (or lack thereof) on something your partner clearly does care about, you're showing how much you value them and your relationship.

"It's really important that each of you take responsibility for the bar that you're setting and the unnecessary stress that you're creating," Dr. Berman said.

So the next time you catch yourself rolling your eyes or questioning your SO, pitch in instead. Don't get annoyed that they want to watch sports or bad reality TV - take it as an opportunity to spend time together. Seeing things from a different perspective will greatly benefit your relationship!

This Married Couple Brought the Heat and High Drama to Their Breathtaking Photo Shoot

There is something so romantic about running away with your lover and getting married in secret. If you find elopements irresistibly sexy, then you will absolutely love this themed photo shoot. Even though Nancy and Enoch are already married, they channeled eloping lovers for this canyon shoot in Page, AZ, and we have to say . . . it's hot.

Nancy wore a sexy striped dress with a plunging neckline and thigh-high slit for the steamy photos within the canyon. The red-hot hues of the canyon made for the perfect backdrop to this sexy photo shoot. The pair then changed into wedding attire for the elopement shots on the top of Horseshoe Bend - Enoch wore a tuxedo, and Nancy changed into a strapless mermaid-cut wedding gown. The views of the canyon are seriously breathtaking. If you weren't considering eloping before, you might just change your mind!

"As a photographer, this was a vision, and I am so glad that I am able to share it with the world," said photographer Victoria Taylor. See their gorgeous photos ahead.

This Couple's Love Story Had the Makings of a Romantic Comedy - See Their Fun Wedding!

Paola and Jay met while they were in the Air Force on assignment in Turkey. According to Paola, the two first connected when they sat next to each other on a bus while on their way to an event and Jay made silly jokes the entire ride. After the couple's real-life meet-cute, they had a wedding that was straight out of a charming romantic comedy. The ceremony took place at Granberry Hills in San Antonio, and was packed with their friends, family, and loved ones. Some memorable things even happened at the wedding? Paola's pregnant bridesmaid cracked a joke about "dancing the baby out" and lo and behold her water broke while dancing. Now that sounds like a coincidence straight out of a Nancy Meyers movie.

"Paola didn't skip a beat all night," said wedding photographer Jennifer Ryals. "She made us all fall in love with their first dance, got down with her best girls, made us cry with her father-daughter dance, and danced with Jay's dad to like four songs and stole the show!"

However, the highlight of the night was when Paola and Jay's two beautiful children made a lovely and heartfelt toast. According to Jennifer, there was not a dry eye in the room afterward. Paola and Jay were beaming with joy, and their photos turned out marvelously. Make sure to check them out ahead!

Victoria Beckham Shared What Products She Travels With - BRB Running to Sephora

From "posh toothpaste" (we wouldn't expect anything less) to handy Q-tips, she's thought through everything, and it all fits inside her chic Hermes bag (although TSA doesn't think so).

Carrie Underwood Shared a Makeup-Free Selfie Post Workout, and We Need Her Skincare Routine

Carrie Underwood showed us how good the post-workout glow can get with a makeup-free selfie on Instagram. The 36-year-old country star posted the pic with the caption: "When your face matches your shirt = you had a good workout!" and showed off her latest fitness gear from her line, Calia by Carrie.

While Underwood is usually in full-on glam (the woman is clearly a fan of a good false lash), her stripped-down selfie reveals her clear and radiant skin. While there's no way to tell what serums, acids, and moisturizers she has in her medicine cabinet, you can bet we're now dying to find out.

Patchology's New Eye Gels Are Like Mood Rings For Your Under-Eye Circles

There are few luxuries in this world as simple and relaxing as under-eye gels. Throughout my years as a beauty editor, these little comma-shaped indulgences have become an essential part of my routine and one of my favorite ways to unwind.

Patchology makes some of my favorite varieties, which is why I was ecstatic when I heard the brand was launching a new line of tea-infused "Moodpatches" to suit every situation. Considering I often wear these little patches in the morning at work while checking my email, when I get home and watch TV, and before I go out dancing with my buds on the weekend, it only makes sense that I'd have a different gel for each occasion.

In the morning as I type away at my computer, I'll slip on the green-tea-packed Perk Up gels, which contain depuffing power and brightening mulberry so no one can tell I stayed up too late watching The Sopranos (I'm on the last season and it's really good!). It also smells like bergamot, which energizes me and allows me to stay focused.

When I finally make my way home from work and plop onto my couch to start the Sopranos cycle all over again, I pop on the "calming tea"-coated Down Time gels. They're scented with ingredients that allow me to unwind, like calendula (which is anti-inflammatory), evening primrose extract (to detoxify), and lavender, which will eventually make me sleepy enough to close my laptop screen.

As for the weekend, my favorite part about going out to a bar or restaurant is the prep work. It's the only time I really get to use my large collection of products and really pamper myself. Before I slather on the makeup, I can place the Happy Place gels beneath my eyes for a hibiscus tea treat. The coconut extract and lotus flower ingredients hydrate my skin and prep them for the mound of concealer that will eventually go on top, while the floral and citrus scents put me in a great mood while I listen to my '90s girl group playlists.

Ahead, check out all three of the eye gels that you'll be able to shop on the brand's website starting April 1.

If I Had a Mini Kelly Bag Like Kylie Jenner's 1-Year-Old Stormi, I'd Never Let Go of It Either

Stormi Webster is one fashionable 1-year-old. After already toting around a mini Louis Vuitton purse, she was seen stealing hearts with a new designer bag. The Work Button-Down Just Got So. Much. Cooler.

While I pride myself on knowing a lot of fashion-y lingo, I must admit I wasn't familiar with the term camp shirt until about, mmm, a week ago. If you, too, haven't been entirely acquainted with this style of top let me regale you with my newly learned intel: also known as a lounge or cabana shirt, camp shirts are loose, straight-cut, short-sleeved button-front shirts with a casual collar that doesn't have a band (aka the stiff part of a collar that makes it stand up). Oh, and they're meant to be worn loosely over waist bands instead of tucked in. Basically, they're chilled out versions of the classic button-down shirts you usually reach for to look tailored and polished. Kind of like a Hawaiian shirt which I'm very much here for with this year's sporty sandals for a chic Dad moment.

So, why am I blabbering on about camp shirts? Because the latest April drop from the POPSUGAR at Kohl's collection is filled with adorable versions that are as perfect on vacation as they are at the office. Honestly, how many shirts do you own that can really do both? I'll wait. With a tie-front silhouette and notched collar that feels '70s-inspired with looking overly retro, these camp shirts are great with high-wasit trousers, jeans, skirts, or even layered over a slip dress. I'd even style one atop a bathing suit with shorts at the beach. Enjoyable, yes?!

From a cute cherry print to fun polka dots and a bouncy shade of red, ahead, five camp shirts to shop from the April POPSUGAR at Kohl's drop.

Whether you prefer a bikini or one-piece, there are plenty of gorgeous options that flatter your stomach. We created a shopping guide of the very best designs you should consider. This 2-Second Style Hack Will Make Your Blazer Infinitely More Flattering

Blazers can often feel like a trip to snoozesville. You know the kind: single-breasted, usually black, navy, or gray, kind of blah (you're getting very sleepy. . .). Though classic and "essential" for work, these versions very easily feel stale after a few too many wears, but what other option is there when a denim jacket or utility anorak doesn't work, at work?

There are also the types of blazers that are having a "moment" (fashion speak for items you've scrolled past a million times on Instagram): big n' boxy fits (which aren't always flattering), super-sized shoulders (which is a bit, uh, bold), and perplexingly sexy cuts (did you know cutout blazers are a thing?!). Not exactly standard for the office and generally the kind of garment that causes quizzical stares when passing through the cubical rows.

Breathing new life into a blazer is hard! But there's a two-second style hack you can try that's not only refreshing, but flattering, too. Are you awake yet? Maybe take a sip a coffee. OK: belting your blazer. Woo-eee! You're jolted.

While you probably reach for a belt to hoist up pants or cinch a flowing dress, it's a genius move to fasten one over your blazer to give it a new look whether you prefer a skinny shape, unique buckle, or textured print. Sure, it's an extra step in the getting ready process, but a belt will add interest to any blazer-centric outfit that feels like it's missing something and enhance your figure at once (because, no, it's not enough to simply button your blazer closed and call it a day).

If you're feeling uncertain about the whole belt-over-a-blazer thing, check out 19 ultra-stylish and easy-to-re-create outfits ahead. You'll quickly realize how simple the concept is and (hopefully) become convinced to try it for yourself. Oh, and one more thing: if you're not stocked on blazers and belts, we put together an edit of under-$50 blazers to shop from the POPSUGAR at Kohl's collection with stylish belts to complement them.

To quote Ciara, "Let me see you one, two step" your next blazer look.

Did Taylor Swift Show Her Love For Her Boyfriend With This 1 Romantic Accessory?

Taylor Swift has been pretty hush-hush about her relationship with actor Joe Alwyn. The 29-year-old singer, who's starring in the film adaptation of the hit musical Cats, recently attended the film's wrap party with the rest of the crew. We noticed that while she was posing for a pic in a leopard print dress, Tay was also wearing a gold ring that's easy to miss at first glance. Many are speculating that her gold ring is emblazoned with "JA", her boyfriend's initials since she has worn a "J" pendant necklace in the past. Other fans are claiming that she's actually wearing an angel wing ring which was given to her as gift by Ed Razek after performing at the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show. Read on to get a closer look and shop similar versions of her ring ahead.

Hailey Baldwin's $50 Zara Jumpsuit Will Catch You Attention Even Next to Justin Bieber's Abs

Hailey Baldwin wants you to know she's a Bieber now. The model posed lovingly with her husband, Justin Bieber, on a yacht wearing a v-neck jumpsuit for an Instagram pic with the caption "The Biebers." The only thing that's more romantic than Hailey's caption was her Zara jumpsuit. Hailey's flowy outfit featured wide-leg pants, and it costs only $50! For his boat look, Justin showed off his abs with a teal shirt left open and a pair of pink swim trunks. Read on to see the adorable pic, and shop Hailey's exact outfit, as well as similar styles, ahead.

Beyoncé's Gown at the NAACP Image Awards Is Actually the Sexiest Suit Jacket in Existence

Beyoncé and Balmain are a winning combination. The singer recently attended the 2019 NAACP Image Awards, where she was honored as entertainer of the year, wearing an architectural number from Balmain's recent Spring 2019 Couture collection. The all-white outfit consisted of a floor-length jacket-dress hybrid with a bodysuit underneath it and a wide-brimmed hat, which Beyoncé removed once inside.

The striking award show look comes after Beyoncé wore a dress from the same Balmain collection to the Roc Nation Grammy Awards brunch. For the daytime event, she opted for a pastel '80s-style minidress from the brand. At the rate Beyoncé is flying through these Balmain designs, let's hope Olivier Rousteing has more where those came from.

The Reality of Sexual Assault You Didn't See in That Powerful Episode of Grey's Anatomy

I've watched Grey's Anatomy since the series began, and while the show has never shied away from tackling tough issues like gun violence, few episodes have resonated as deeply as "Silent All These Years," an hour-long exploration of sexual assault, domestic violence, and consent.

The storyline of the March 28 episode centers on a patient named Abby, who arrives at the hospital bruised and bleeding after being attacked at a bar. She immediately bonds with Jo, who guides her to the emergency room and performs the initial exam. When it becomes clear that Abby's trauma and injuries are consistent with sexual assault, Jo moves her to a private room and pages fellow surgeon Teddy Altman, who can administer a rape kit. Abby is resistant at first - scared of the uphill battle she could face when trying to build a case - but then Jo opens up about her own history of domestic violence and encourages Abby to collect the evidence while she can. "One day you might feel differently. You might want justice, and I want you to have everything you need to do that," she says.

In 2015, only 17 percent of hospitals with emergency departments employed a sexual assault forensic or nurse examiner.

It's a powerful moment that sparks a larger conversation between the doctors about what should and shouldn't be protocol when treating victims of sexual assault. But it wasn't this display of women supporting women or the very realistic portrayal of the procedure itself that struck me hardest. Instead, I could only think about how few survivors have access to even the most basic services.

In 2015, only 17 percent of hospitals with emergency departments employed a sexual assault forensic or nurse examiner, professionals who receive specialized education to collect evidence and testify in court should a case go to trial. And while bipartisan legislation has been introduced that would help increase access to these examinations nationwide, it has yet to pass. A congressional report found that victims in rural areas may have to travel up to two hours for a rape kit - a procedure before which you should not shower, change your clothes, or use the restroom. The same report explained that "exams performed by trained sexual assault forensic examiners may result in shortened exam time, better quality health care delivered to victims, higher quality forensic evidence collection, as well as better collaboration with the legal system and higher prosecution rates."

And yet this lack of quality care is just one of the obstacles women face in the pursuit of justice. It's been widely reported that hundreds of thousands of rape kits remain untested in police and crime lab facilities across the country, an issue raised in this episode of Grey's Anatomy and one programs like End the Backlog - an extension of the Joyful Heart Foundation - are working tirelessly to address.

Until then, ensuring that the evidence is collected at all should be a priority. To show your support for the Survivors' Access to Supportive Care Act, contact your senator or US House representative. If you're a registered nurse, you can find information on specialized training from the International Association of Forensic Nurses.

If you or a friend are a victim of sexual assault, you can visit RAINN or call its hotline at 1-800-656-4673 to receive confidential support from a trained staff member.
