This $4 Product Takes the Brassiness Out of My Blonde With One Wash
If you color your hair, you can relate to the feeling of leaving the salon after an appointment. For me, it's how some people might feel after applying red lipstick or wearing high heels: I feel like I can rule the world. Like Oprah, Captain Marvel or Britney Spears, I'm in charge; I'm that. b*tch. (Even if I had freaked out that morning about losing my phone when it had been in my pocket the entire time.) And my hair is blonder and bright - lifted, gifted, higher than the ceiling, ooh wee it's the ultimate feelin' . . .
Even though I love being blonde, it's inevitable that my hair will get brassy between salon visits. After feeling like it was something I'd always have to deal with, I learned a few tricks to help keep my hair looking bright and fresh, even when it's been a few months since seeing my colorist. First, I invested in a water filter. In Los Angeles, we deal with hard water. Naturally, it takes a toll on my hair. Since using the Raindrops system, I've noticed not only is my hair maintaining its color longer, but it's softer, and so is my skin - it doesn't feel tight and dry like it used to.
But the best, quickest fix for reviving brassy, blonde hair to fresh, cool-toned blonde is a product that my colorist Justin Anderson shared with me. Since day one, he's used Malibu C Blondes Weekly Brightener ($11 for three) on my hair. When I go in for a color appointment, he washes the hair with it because it's clarifying.
"It brightens up the blonde hair that has been dulled down by environmental exposure, hard water, and over-shampooing," said Anderson. Even though I'm good at going a few days between washes and have my water filter, lord knows this LA lady deals with her fair share of environmental damage.
Because he also suggests giving the hair a break between salon appointments to help keep your hair in great shape, I've been utilizing Malibu C about once a month and love how it refreshes my color and makes it look like I just had a color appointment.
Malibu C Blondes is a vitamin C crystal powder that you use after shampooing your hair. Make sure your palm is wet, pour the crystals into it, and allow them to dissolve. Apply to your wet hair by scrunching it in; I end up massaging them so that it creates as little foam. Let it sit for five minutes so it can do it's thing - this is usually when I shave or exfoliate my body - and then rinse and condition your hair.
It's vegan, paraben-, and sulfate-free, and adds a really gorgeous luminosity to the hair afterwards.
Thanks to This Redness-Erasing Foundation, You’d Never Know How Irritated My Skin Was
I've always had dry skin, but it's been significantly more irritated after a recent snowboarding trip. Between the seven-hour flight and the four days of ripping through snow at high speeds, my cheeks were tender to the touch when I returned. The areas of my face that were the most sensitive would turn red to the touch.
Of course, I started giving it more love with the most emollient, fragrance-free moisturizers I could find; but there were still areas that seemed too sensitive. Luckily, a jar of Stila Lingerie Soufflé Skin Perfecting Color in Shade 5.0 ($38) has been hiding the irritation.
The first time I opened the jar, I was surprised to find a fluffy, airy whipped formula. I immediately dipped my fingers into the jar (after washing my hands, of course), began dabbing the goop onto my face, and blending it out with my makeup sponge. It magically erased the rosier splotches on my cheeks and chin along with the bags under my eyes - all while wearing so comfortably, I often forget about it.
One thing to keep in mind is to always prep your skin with moisturizer before applying this complexion-perfecting product. On the day I skipped it, I saw the foundation sit in the driest parts of my face, although my skin was especially dehydrated. See the complexion perfecting foundation, ahead.

Get Ready, Because It Seems Like New Taylor Swift Music Is FINALLY Coming!
The time has finally come, Swifties! After all of our theories about new music, Taylor Swift has finally given us the tiniest of hints about what's to come. At midnight on April 13 (ugh, her mind!), the "Delicate" singer did a complete overhaul to her social media accounts. Her profile picture of the Reputation album is now replaced with a dreamy picture of a cloud (similar to those dreamy filters she's been posting lately), and her website has a countdown for April 26 along with a sign up to receive updates. I honestly don't think I've signed up to be on a mailing list faster.
Is she releasing a new single or could it be an official announcement for her seventh album? She did let us know that when she has new music to share, we would be the first to know. Maybe this is her way of telling us the time has come. Whatever it is, it seems like the new Taylor Swift era is officially upon us! Bring on the palm trees, butterflies, and rainbows!
Ready For Some Magical News? A Discovery of Witches Has Already Been Renewed For Season 2
The first trailer for A Discovery of Witches premiered all the way back in June 2018, and immediately passionate fans of the first book in Deborah Harkness's bestselling All Souls trilogy were eager to see the adaptation hit the small screen. Unfortunately, for American audiences, the wait for the series has been longer than initially expected - the first season aired in full on the UK's Sky network months ago but only just premiered on AMC and BBC America in the US on April 7.
Regardless of whether you're in the US or the UK, you're likely wondering the same thing: will there be a second season of A Discovery of Witches? The short answer is . . . yes! In fact, the series has already been renewed for season three, as well. But details about when either of the seasons will premiere are still murky.
For those of you who haven't watched, the fantasy show follows heroine Diana (Hacksaw Ridge actress Teresa Palmer), a professor and reluctant witch who accidentally unlocks an important, enchanted manuscript in Oxford's famed Bodleian library that leads her to cross paths with a handsome, centuries-old vampire named Matthew (The Crown's Matthew Goode). During our recent interview with Palmer about the show, she let slip a few details about what we can expect from season two, which has yet to start shooting.
"What's funny is, I've only skimmed through the second book," she explained of Harkness's trilogy. "So I know it's Elizabethan. I mean, that's what we all know, that the series is going to be set in that time period. But I've purposely made a decision that I was going to wait for the script so that I didn't have any kind of preconceived idea of where the story has to go or fall in love with one particular element that, for whatever reason, I can't end up putting in the show. But we'll definitely get to see Diana use a lot more power, which is fantastic, and an interesting dynamic shift between her and Matthew."
So, TL;DR - season two? Happening. Diana becoming even more powerful? Happening. Diana and Matthew frolicking around the Elizabethan era? Happening. And if we take into account when the first season premiered in the UK and the US - Sept. 14, 2018 and April 7, 2019, respectively - we can (hopefully) assume the second installment of the series will arrive around the same time period for each.
Ready For More Good Girls? The NBC Crime Dramedy Has Been Renewed For Season 3
NBC's crime dramedy starring Retta, Christina Hendricks, and Mae Whitman has officially been
renewed for season three! Created by Jenna Bans, Good Girls follows three cash-strapped, suburban moms - Ruby, Annie, and Beth, played respectively by Retta, Whitman, and Hendricks - who decide to take matters into their own hands and rob their local grocery store. Despite a seemingly successful caper, the moms learn that the $30,000 they've stolen is a lot more complicated when they get sucked into the world of money laundering. While some have likened the series to Breaking Bad, the sophomore season has definitely proven that Good Girls is in a league of its own.
"We're so excited to continue following the friendship and adventures of these three incredible women while also exploring relatable issues in both funny and surprising ways," said Lisa Katz and Tracey Pakosta, copresidents of NBC's scripted programming. "Congratulations to Jenna Bans, and our amazing writers, cast and crew who give these stories depth and humanity."
The Pet Sematary Reboot Includes a Startling Change to Stephen King's Original Story
Warning: BIG spoilers for both the original and new versions of Pet Sematary ahead!
After watching the trailer for the Pet Sematary reboot a few months back, we were shocked to discover that the studio decided to give away a major twist that explains both of the horror flicks' chilling taglines: "Sometimes dead is better" and "They don't come back the same."
In this new adaptation of Stephen King's 1983 novel, directors Kevin Kölsch and Dennis Widmyer decided to change a major component of the original story. This time around, the young son of the Creed family isn't the one who dies - it's his older sister.
To give you some background, the film follows Louis Creed (Jason Clarke), who moves into a sprawling rural home with his wife, Rachel (Amy Seimetz), and their two young children, 8-year-old Ellie (Jeté Laurence) and toddler Gage (twins Hugo Lavoie and Lucas Lavoie). Not long after they arrive, their neighbor Jud Crandall (John Lithgow) informs them about the eerie pet cemetery located in the woods bordering their home, which isn't your average burial place for beloved cats and dogs. Instead, when dead pets are buried on a plot of land just beyond the pet cemetery in the woods (which used to be a burial ground for the Micmac tribe), sometimes they come back, albeit in a much more aggressive, evil, zombie-like state. All of this is essentially in line with King's original story.
Here's where things diverge: the Creeds' home happens to be directly next to a busy road where trucks fly by at dangerous speeds, and Ellie is tragically hit while running out to grab the family's recently reanimated cat, Church. Gage actually does run out into the road when he sees his sister, but Louis is able to pull him back in time; the driver swerves to avoid them, resulting in his truck coming apart and hitting Ellie.
Despite Jud's warnings, a grief-stricken Louis decides to bury Ellie in the cemetery. A very creepy and very murderous version of their daughter returns, dead set on making everyone around her just as dead as she is. In the book and 1989 film adaptation, Gage is the one who dies and comes back, playing psychological games with his family members and ultimately killing multiple people. (It's not actually him, however - a spirit from the burial grounds possesses his body.)
So, what's the deal with this new twist? The film's creators sat down with EW in February to explain their big decision.
"Trust me, we were nervous about it," producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura said. "I feel this way about anything that you remake or update. If we gave you what you had before, we didn't do the subject matter much good. I'm very protective of movies too, but I want a new experience each time, and feel like filmmakers have really thought about the choice. That was one, we thought, 'All right, let's make this choice.'"
Kölsch and Widmyer also said they felt the change to Jeff Buhler's screenplay was necessary due to the physical realities of their young stars. "Much of how they shot the first [movie] was a doll," Widmyer said of the original 3-year-old Gage character. "It's creepy and it's effective. But we've now seen Child's Play and we've seen the little kid trying to kill, and it's effective when done right." He went on to note that they wanted to try something new instead.
"There was something about an 8-year-old and the psychology that she would have," he added. "She would understand what happened to her on the road. She would understand that she's dead. She would know how to not only physically kill a person, but psychologically destroy them as well. It just gave another layer to it."
Ellie indeed knows what happened to her - she tells her father as much after he brings her back, and then insinuates that it's his fault she died. She has a similar thirst for vengeance for her mother, and . . . well, we won't spoil it any further for you. Let's just say that it'll give you enough nightmares to last a lifetime.
The Ominous Laugh at the End of the Star Wars: Episode IX Trailer Reveals the Film's Villain
The first teaser for Star Wars: Episode IX - officially dubbed Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker - has arrived, and though brief, it reveals a lot about what we can expect from the final installment of the recent trilogy, including the "new" villain.
The footage begins with Rey (Daisy Ridley) alone in the desert as a voice-over from the late Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) informs her that hundreds of generations live within her, and even though many of the Skywalkers are gone, they'll "always be with" her. We can't be sure exactly when he tells her this in the actual film, but it makes for a highly emotional moment as Rey does an epic flip into a First Order ship, lightsaber in hand. Clearly Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) is still leading the charge against Rey despite their connection in The Last Jedi, but the last few seconds of the teaser also confirm who will be the film's Big Bad with one seriously ominous laugh: Palpatine.
The The Rise of Skywalker trailer and Palpatine's return was revealed during a panel at the Star Wars Celebration event in Chicago on Friday. "This movie, in addition to being the end of three trilogies, it also has to work as its own movie," director J.J. Abrams revealed. "It's about this new generation and what they've inherited the light and the dark, and asking the question as they face the greatest evil, are they prepared? Are they ready?"
Palpatine - the previous Dark Lord of the Sith who looks like a withered lemon and also went by the moniker Darth Sidious - was previously played by Ian McDiarmid in the first two trilogies, and was thought to be dead after being taken out by Darth Vader in 1983's Return of the Jedi. Palpatine rose to infamy after becoming an apprentice for Darth Plagueis, and later conspired to restore the Order to galactic dominance by force, killing many along the way. Despite his death, Sidious's legacy is what the First Order bases their regime on in The Force Awakens, with Supreme Leader Snoke helming the successor to the Empire.
McDiarmid, 74, was on hand at the Star Wars Celebration event, and boomed "roll it again" in character onstage as the trailer replayed. He's played the villain four out of the five times the character has appeared in the franchise - Return of the Jedi, The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones, and Revenge of the Sith. Since Snoke has (presumably) been eliminated for good thanks to the end of The Last Jedi, Palpatine is a fittingly familiar face to bring back.
What's more is just how tangled Palpatine has been with the Skywalkers. Annakin served as his apprentice, eventually leading to the former Jedi's transformation into Darth Vader. Luke also has a few brushes with Darth Sidious in the original trilogy. It's his connection to Vader that saves him from a fight with Palpatine in Return of the Jedi, with Vader tossing Sidious down a giant shaft on the Death Star where he was thought to perish in an explosion. In the more recent films, we've watched Kylo Ren struggle with his Skywalker lineage, feeling the push and pull from both the dark and light sides. How will Palpatine's reappearance factor into his internal battle?
It's also worth wondering how, exactly, Palpatine will been seen in the third film. Did he actually die in that explosion in Return of the Jedi? Will we be seeing his Force ghost? Or did he miraculously survive and is now older and more deformed than ever? We'll have plenty of time to mull it over since Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker doesn't hit theaters until Dec. 20.
Dwayne Johnson Sequin Pillows Are Here - Don't @ Me, but I Kind of Want Them All
If you've been on Etsy lately, you've probably noticed that sequin pillows have pretty much taken over. There's a variety of hilarious Nicolas Cage and Jeff Goldblum ones, and even a Joey Tribbiani one from Friends! But finally the sequin gods have answered my prayers, and given me not one, but three Dwayne Johnson pillows! That's right - Etsy has a Christmas-themed version, a rock-inspired one, and, my personal favorite, one with Dwayne's famous '90s throwback photo. Yep, the one with the black turtleneck and fanny pack! Don't @ me, but since they're each under $30, I might just end up buying them all.
Three's Company! Jamie Foxx's Daughter Crashes His Date Night With Katie Holmes
It's a family affair! Following Katie Holmes and Jamie Foxx's romantic date in NYC, the couple recently returned to LA and linked up with the actor's 25-year-old daughter, Corinne (whom he shares with ex Connie Kline). On Monday, the trio kept things casual as they bonded over dinner and a movie. Katie and Jamie showed some sweet PDA as they held hands and caught up with Corinne, though Katie's 12-year-old daughter, Suri Cruise, and Jamie's other daughter, 9-year-old Annalise Bishop, were noticeably absent.
Despite recent breakup rumors, Katie and Jamie have been quietly dating since 2013, and things seem pretty serious. Not only do they have "great chemistry," but they're also "close friends." The 40-year-old actress has also reportedly gotten quite close with Jamie's daughters, and Jamie apparently has an "amazing relationship" with Suri. We're happy to see Jamie and Katie have embraced their blended families!
The Fight "Comes to an End" in the First Dramatic Teaser For Star Wars: Episode IX
We finally have our first look at Star Wars: Episode IX, and it's glorious.
The first trailer for Episode IX, which has been formally dubbed Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, was revealed during a panel at the Star Wars Celebration event in Chicago on Friday. Director J.J. Abrams and Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy presented fans with the title and trailer, along with The Rise of Skywalker stars Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Kelly Marie Tran, and newcomer Naomi Ackie.
According to Variety, Abrams explained that "some time has gone by" in the film and it won't take place immediately after the events of 2017's The Last Jedi. He also discussed how The Rise of Skywalker is expected to wrap up the Skywalker family saga, more than 40 years after the original Star Wars hit theaters.
"This movie, in addition to being the end of three trilogies, it also has to work as its own movie," Abrams said. "It's about this new generation and what they've inherited, the light and the dark, and asking the question as they face the greatest evil: are they prepared? Are they ready?"
The trailer itself shows Ridley's Rey in the desert before brief glimpses of Kylo Ren, Poe, and Finn flash by. Among the few big reveals in the trailer - including the first look at Billy Dee Williams as Lando Calrissian - we hear the laughter of Palpatine, the villain played by Ian McDiarmid in the previous two trilogies who was thought to be dead. We can't wait to see what other surprises await when Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker premieres on Dec. 20.
Are You Ready? Here's the Cast of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker
We finally have more details about Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker! Stars Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, and Oscar Isaac will be returning for Episode IX, and the late, great Carrie Fisher will also be reprising her role as General Leia Organa thanks to unused footage from The Force Awakens. Director J.J. Abrams also has a few other big stars to play new - and familiar - roles in IX. Ahead you'll find all the actors slated to join the upcoming film.
How Are We Just Now Learning This Story About Princess Diana and When Harry Met Sally?

It's been 30 years since When Harry Met Sally joined the romantic-comedy canon, and how are we just now learning about this incredible anecdote involving Princess Diana? Director Rob Reiner recently reunited with Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal at the TCM Classic Film Festival to celebrate the movie's anniversary. It was there that he revealed Diana's reaction to that deli scene.
Related: Here's a Truly Incredible Story About Princess Diana at a Michael Jackson Concert
Reminiscing about the London premiere, which Diana attended, Reiner told Extra, "We were all sitting there nervous because as we approached the famous scene in Katz's Deli where my mother says, 'I'll have what she's having,' we realized, 'Oh, my God, how is [Diana] gonna react to it?'" Though iconic - for anyone unfamiliar - the scene has Ryan's Sally Albright fake an orgasm in the middle of a deli to prove how easily it can be convincingly done.

Though it shouldn't come as too much of a surprise, the Princess of Wales got a kick out of it. Reiner said, "She was laughing and she turned to Billy at one point and said, 'I would be laughing a lot more, but I know that everybody's watching me.'" See? Incredible.

The Video For BTS and Halsey's "Boy With Luv" Will Have You Saying "Oh My, My, My"
K-pop superstars BTS are continuing their quest for world domination, and they've called on Halsey to lend her vocals to their latest release, a Summer jam entitled "Boy With Luv." The infectious, upbeat track comes complete with an Americana-inspired video full of poppy pastels - and we're not just talking about the hair! The guys dance (and rap) their way past an old movie theater, a retro diner, and a very La La Land-esque outdoor setting, before hooking up with Halsey for the big dance number. The song itself won't fail to get your on your feet, and you'd better get used to hearing it, because we have a feeling this might be one of the songs of the Summer.

Oprah Winfrey Praises Her "Wonderful, Loving" Friend Meghan Markle Amid Unfair Media Reports
Meghan Markle has been heavily criticized by the media as "difficult" and "demanding," and Oprah Winfrey has had enough. After announcing her new partnership with Prince Harry, the 65-year-old media mogul came to the duchess's defense during her stop on CBS This Morning on Wednesday. "I think she's being portrayed unfairly," Oprah explained. "She is not only everything that we perceive of her in being graceful and dynamic in holding that position, but she just has a wonderful, warm, giving, loving heart." Oprah then revealed whether Meghan has read any of the negative press about her, and Gayle King also jumped in to defend the royal once again.
Oprah famously attended Meghan and Prince Harry's nuptials back in May 2018, and she's also formed quite the cute friendship with Meghan's mom, Doria Ragland. Not only do they do yoga together, but they share the same love of kumquats. How adorable is that? Now where do we sign up to join this friend group?
Coachella Put Beyoncé's Pyramid Stage From Last Year on Display - Her Impact, Y'all!
In today's "Beyoncé is a bona fide icon" news, Coachella has decided to commemorate the 37-year-old singer's historic performance that she put on at last year's festival. The same pyramid stage that she flawlessly sang and danced on during her two-hour set is now on display at the Indio, CA, venue. Although Beyoncé isn't expected to return this year, her presence will still be felt as attendees snap pictures in front of the platform, which can be located on the camping map.
Bey's performance - which was basically one giant ode to HBCUs - was such a significant cultural occurrence that she's teaming up with Netflix to bring fans a documentary about the show. The film, Homecoming, will allow viewers to follow along as Beyoncé and her team prepare for the giant Coachella production. So even if you're unable to see the pyramid stage in person, you can at least watch how it came to be when Homecoming drops on April 17!
The Reason Daenerys Believes She Is Barren Goes Back to Season 1
It's been a long time since we saw Game of Thrones's season seven episode, "Beyond the Wall," but it's worth revisiting before the show returns for its final bath of episodes. Why? Because it ties in with a very important fact about Daenerys: She's not capable of having children . . . or so she thinks.
To recap, Jon finally accepts Daenerys as his queen and the two make serious eyes at each other before she insists that he get some rest after his adventures in nearly freezing to death. Between their budding romance and Tyrion questioning the khaleesi about who will be next in line for the throne if she should die, "Beyond the Wall" was intent on reminding viewers that Daenerys cannot have children - at least, not human ones. The reason for this goes all the way back to season one.
Daenerys becomes pregnant during her marriage to Khal Drogo, and she and her husband believe their son is destined to be the Stallion Who Mounts the World. However, late in her pregnancy, Daenerys decides to put an end to the Dothraki's practice of raping the women of the villages they conquer. In the process, she saves Mirri Maz Duur, a healer and proficient practitioner of blood magic. When one of Khal Drogo's men challenges the khaleesi's decision to take the women under her protection, her husband fights for her. He kills the man who opposes them, but ends up with a wound which only becomes worse under Mirri Maz Duur's treatment.
Ultimately, the woman convinces Daenerys that the only way to save Khal Drogo is with a blood sacrifice. What she doesn't tell Daenerys is that her son's life will pay for her husband's, and that he will still be left in a vegetative state. Mirri Maz Duur orchestrates the entire situation as an act of revenge because, as she reveals to Daenerys, she was raped three times before the khaleesi "rescued" her, and she witnessed her village and all of its people burn. She's not content with taking Khal Drogo and Daenerys's son, though. She also offers the khaleesi a prophecy as well, stating:
"When the sun rises in the west and sets in the east, when the seas go dry and mountains blow in the wind like leaves, when your womb quickens again and you bear a living child, then he will return, and not before."
Because of the prophecy, Daenerys believes she is barren. That's why she sees her dragons as her children and why Viserion's death affects her so deeply. As far as she knows, she will never give birth again, and her only family is a trio of dragons who came out of the fire with her.
It should be noted that many fans believe the prophecy is open to interpretation. Reddit user kaiokenx4 lays out an interesting theory that posits Mirri Maz Duur is actually talking about the long Winter coming to an end. While Daenerys is asking about when Khal Drogo will return, the "him" Mirri Maz Duur may be referring to could be Azor Ahai. In other words, once Daenerys conceives and gives birth to a living child, the realm may be saved. (Adding fuel to this theory's flame is Ser Jorah pointedly telling Jon he should pass Longclaw on to his children one day in the same episode that both Tyrion and Daenerys remind us that she will never have an heir.)
Prophecies are tricky things, and they should rarely be taken literally. As of right now, Daenerys believes she will never have another child, but she also believes she's the last Targaryen, and she's definitely wrong about that. She could be wrong about this, too, and if she is, then Tyrion's fears about who will make sure the wheel stays broken after she's gone could be a bit premature.

Well, he's still going to be producing the sources of your nightmares this year, including the skin-crawling Annabelle Comes Home. If you're obsessed with the Conjuring universe like us, you're in for a treat with the third installation of the creepy doll movie. The upcoming film will, of course, feature our favorite horror patriarch and matriarch: Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga. But you'll also see fresh blood (perhaps confronting actual blood by the looks of the terrifying trailer) such as Mckenna Grace and Madison Iseman. Check out the cast ahead - we promise there won't be any jump scares!
I Walked an Extra 1,000 Steps Each Week For a Month, and I'm Shocked at How Great It Felt
Listen, if Harley Pasternak tells me all I have to do to stay in shape is get in some steps, then I'm definitely going to try it. Actually, this celebrity trainer's go-to weight-loss tip is truly just to go for a walk. And while he firmly believes you should aim for 10,000 steps a day, don't be discouraged if you're below that (me!), because Harley has a plan to increase your steps. I tried this ultimate walking plan to see if it was doable and how I'd feel, and it actually went better than I thought it would. Check it out.
What Is Harley's Walking Plan?
Harley's plan to increase your steps for weight loss is incredibly simple. You start at your baseline of steps and for the first week of the month, you add 1,000 steps per day. For week two, you add another 1,000 steps. It's the same with weeks three and four, so at the end of the month, you've added 4,000 steps to your day compared to where you started.
Like I said, Harley assumes your plan starts at 10,000 steps, because he wants everyone to be walking at least that many per day, but realistically, I knew I wasn't walking nearly that many. The first thing I did was buy a step tracker, because I didn't own one and the health app on my phone has never worked properly. I got this Zunammy ($11) at Target and it served me well.
On the day before I started the plan, I went through my typical day to see where I landed on step count, which was right around 5,000, give or take a few steps. So 5,000 was my baseline, and by the end of the month, I'd have that number up to 9,000 steps per day.
How I Got Those Extra Steps
On day one, I walked farther from my office for lunch and found that it increased my steps by a considerable amount, helping me hit my first goal of 6,000 steps easily. As the weeks went on, I found myself walking farther to lunch spots or getting off the train at a different stop to walk home or to the office. It became clear that adding steps here and there was more attainable than taking longer walks.
Weekends were the worst part of this because I hate leaving my apartment. It's the only time I have to relax, and I love more than anything to not put on real clothes and truly just stay in bed all weekend. The first two weekends, I was still really excited about this plan, so I bribed myself with a reward for completing my steps. Wouldn't you know it there's a Starbucks approximately 3,000 steps away from my apartment? The walk there and back was perfect.
By the fourth week, I was struggling to hit my step count on some days, simply because I was so busy with my day job and my evening job of freelancing. I would have to build in extra time to accommodate for so many more steps, and there was one day I was so close to 9,000, but it was late and I didn't want to leave again so I walked laps around my apartment.
Likewise, I didn't hit my step count on the final weekend, though I tried. It was rainy and I was tired, so it just didn't happen.
So, Will I Keep It Up?
I felt so good overall from adding the extra steps to my routine. I'm not sure I lost any actual weight (I'm in a fight with my scale right now), but I felt a lot better. And the one or two days where I missed meeting my goal, I could feel it. I also found that walking extra made me feel rejuvenated during the day and actually helped me sleep a little bit better at night. As someone who is incredibly bad at sleeping, I'll take any help I can get.
Not to mention I've grown quite fond of my step tracker's goal notification. The little buzz that it gives me makes me feel like a champion. So I've decided to lower my step goal slightly until I feel like I can master that number (7,500), and then I'll ultimately bump it up to get 10,000 steps a day.
6 Reasons RunDisney's Princess Half Marathon Weekend Is the Most Magical Race on Earth
Walt Disney World recently wrapped up its RunDisney Princess Half Marathon Weekend - which includes a 5K and 10K, in addition to the 13.1 - and in a surprise to literally no one who has ever visited a Disney park, it was magical. If you've been thinking about participating in a RunDisney event - or running your first race, period - you should move the princess-themed races to the top of your list. Race weekends are jam-packed with fun, and I'm not just talking about the obvious perks of getting to spend a few days in the park, enjoying the attractions and delicious food. Here are just a few reasons runners love this particular race so much.
- There's amazing merchandise. Every year during the Princess Half Marathon Weekend, RunDisney unveils some of the most beautiful and exclusive merchandise, including wine glasses, Tervis tumblers, race-themed Minnie ears, spirit jerseys, pins, and magnets. Runners can find all of this at the ESPN Wide World of Sports, where the race expo is held.
- Everyone dresses in costume. Part of the fun of Princess Half Marathon Weekend is that almost everyone is wearing some type of costume. Whether they pull the look together themselves or choose to buy a costume or themed t-shirt, the princess vibe is strong. Some people even do character mashups (think: Jedi Anna).
- The finisher medals are awesome. Each distance has a theme, right down to the medals that are presented to runners at the finish line. In the past, medals have been designed in the likeness of the princesses from Tangled, Sleeping Beauty, Brave, The Little Mermaid, and Frozen.
- Characters line the course. Yes, there's a good chance you'll find Disney princesses and sidekicks - and sometimes even villains - in both the pre- and postrace areas and along the course. You'll likely also be greeted by the park's biggest stars: Mickey and Minnie.
- Every mile is Instagram-worthy. There are photo opportunities throughout the race, from backgrounds set up by race staff to princess-themed mile markers, park icons, and cast members with fun signs.
- The postrace food is out of this world. You deserve a treat after 13.1 miles, and there are an abundance of options within the park (this is Disney, after all), from Mickey waffles to those towering Dole Whips.

We Found Your New Summer Beverage: This Light and Refreshing Boozy "Kombrewcha"
Kombucha, the fermented probiotic tea, is one of the trendiest beverages around, so obviously one of your first questions might be: can I make it alcoholic?
The answer is yes; in fact, it's already slightly alcoholic on its own, with 0.5 ABV. That's low enough that the drink is labeled nonalcoholic, so you won't really feel it. The health benefits are legit, though: kombucha is great for your gut and a good source of antioxidants, though rumors of its metabolism-boosting effects aren't quite true. If you're looking for an actual buzz along with all of that, there are a few options out there, including the fantastically named Kombrewcha.
We should note that Kombrewcha isn't the booziest of beverages, with only 3.2 percent ABV per drink - about one percentage point behind most light beers. But if you love your kombucha and want to mix it with a light summer buzz, it might be worth a try. The brand says it's perfect for mid-week happy hours or drinking around the pool: low-key, relaxed, and refreshing.
The beverage, soon to be available in convenient and Instagram-friendly cans, contains black tea, cane sugar, and yeast, with all-organic and gluten-free ingredients. The original Kombrewcha flavor "tastes somewhere between a beer and a cider," the website says. The brand also offers Royal Ginger, Lemongrass Lime, and Berry Hibiscus flavors. For those looking to get a little more bang from their buck when it comes to boozy drinks, Kombrewcha also offers a guide to making your own cocktails with its products.
Currently, you can only get Kombrewcha at select locations in NYC and Miami; check out their store locator to see exactly where it's available. (For Southern California drinkers, check out the equally attractive JuneShine hard kombucha.) With kombucha continuing to grow in popularity, we'll be waiting for the day that Kombrewcha can expand its range. Until then, check out the pretty packaging and impressively simple and healthy nutrition information ahead.
This Female Caddie - and Living Legend - Is on the Green Once Again at the Masters
We're in the heart of the Masters right now, but unless you're a major golf fan, you're probably not paying much attention to the side players on the course: the caddies. You see caddies carrying golf bags and handing off clubs, but their job actually goes much further than that, measuring yardages from ball to green and giving advice before crucial strokes. Caddies can work with golfers for years, receiving cuts of their winnings and even getting their own sponsorships.
All of which gives you even more of a reason to keep your eyes peeled this weekend when Fanny Sunesson is on the green. A professional caddie since 1989, Fanny is the only female caddie to have won a PGA tour major - and the only woman so far to be recognized in the Caddie Hall of Fame. She retired from full-time caddying in 2012 after a career that would be legendary by any standard: according to Golf.com, she's won four majors, several Ryder Cups, and a Players Championship in her 23-year career.
This weekend, though, Fanny is back on the course at Augusta National for the Masters tournament, caddying for fellow Swede Henrik Stenson. She was his caddie for five years before her retirement, and she has plenty of experience at the Masters: she won it twice with English golfer Nick Faldo, in 1990 and 1996. She was just 23 at the time of their first win, which vaulted her into the history books.
"I thought of it as a chance to see the world," Fanny said of her decision to start caddying so young, in an interview with CNN Living Golf. "Maybe do it for a year and travel in Europe. It ended up being a few more years than a year."
"She's always been so well-prepared and has every number possible and [has] seen the course," Stenson said in an interview with Golf Channel. "It's fun to catch up and be out together again."
Fanny is still in retirement, with no plans to return to caddying full-time; for the most part, she now works as a coach. For this weekend, though, you can catch the living legend out on the green once again.

There Are Several Ways to Practice Intermittent Fasting, but This 1 Is Probably Most Effective
Even if you know someone who has lost weight while intermittent fasting, you might be skeptical. After all, you've always been told that the formula for weight loss is calories in, calories out - so how can a plan that doesn't require counting calories, at least not in the traditional sense, actually work? The answer is relatively simple: fasting is thought to shift hormone levels so your body can more easily access stored fat. But there's more than one method for doing this and a few common mistakes that can throw you off track. Here's how to make sure your efforts are rewarded.
Which Method of Intermittent Fasting Is Most Effective?
As with most diets, results hinge on a number of factors, Monica Auslander Moreno, MS, RD, LDN, nutrition consultant for RSP Nutrition, told POPSUGAR. There are two main types of IF: time-restricted eating, in which you fast for, say, 12 or 16 hours each day and eat only during the remaining window, and plans that require you to eat very few calories for whole days at a time (never consecutively). The best method is the one you'll practice most consistently.
"If someone is more likely to mindlessly snack at night, then setting a 'cutoff' time for food will restrict intake, and weight loss will likely occur," Monica said. Likewise, "some people actually are nauseous in the morning, so skipping breakfast may be welcome for them," she explained, while others may risk overeating later in the day in an attempt to make up for the meal they lost. Figuring out which times of day you're most hungry - and when you can go without - can help you choose the plan that's right for you.
That said, alternate-day fasting - in which you consume no more than 500 calories every other day - has a higher dropout rate than other low-calorie diets, according to research published in JAMA Internal Medicine. Time-restricted IF, on the other hand, may feel less grueling to follow than a low-calorie diet. So, if you've had a difficult time with conventional dieting, simply narrowing that window may be more effective for you, Megan Casper, MS, RDN, a dietitian and owner of Nourished Bite Nutrition in New York City, told POPSUGAR. Though more long-term studies need to be conducted, Megan also noted that IF has benefits aside from weight loss, including lower blood pressure, improving metabolism, and reducing inflammation.
Mistakes to Avoid While Intermittent Fasting
Unlike traditional diets, IF doesn't place limits on calories or eliminate any one type of food from your plate. While this is freeing, it can also get you into trouble. If you eat only poor quality foods when you're not fasting, it's unlikely you'll lose weight or reap any of the other health benefits associated with IF.
Both Megan and Monica noted that two common pitfalls of IF are extreme hunger and fatigue, which can cause you to focus more on when you can eat than what you should eat. This can result in eating empty calories and junk food over healthy, filling options. It's important to make good choices during the day, while also thinking critically about how any one plan will affect other aspects of your life, from your social life to your exercise routine, and even your sleep, Monica explained.
The good news is, if you can make it work for you, IF may be a safer bet, even in the long-term. Research shows that it may result in less muscle mass lost than conventional diets, and muscle is essential for your metabolism. "Going on a low-calorie diet, whether it be a fast or [other type of] diet, causes you to first lose muscle and water weight," Megan said. "People typically think this means the diet is working, but once they go back to their normal diets, their metabolism has slowed down, and they usually gain the weight back and then some." So, sticking with IF could mean you lose weight more steadily and keep it off.
Achieve "Whatever You Set Your Mind to" in Vanessa Hudgens's First-Ever Activewear Line
It's no secret that Vanessa Hudgens is a fitness fanatic, which is exactly what she told POPSUGAR ahead of her first-ever activewear launch with Avia. Her tried-and-true workouts, she said, are Pilates, yoga, and indoor cycling - it's what she calls the "best recipe" for her body. So, it only made sense that she would eventually create a collection of fitness attire (after all, she said, you can find her working out almost every single day).
"I think that there's nothing better than walking into a workout class already feeling confident, and the way to do that is to be wearing something that you feel really good in. I was like, 'I should just make my own designs and make stuff that I would want to wear.' And it's exactly that," she explained. "It's perfect for everyday activities and also perfect for just lounging around. It's stylish and it's cool, and I'm really excited about it."
The 30-year-old actress said she picked Avia for this debut collection because she trusted the brand's ability to bring her vision to life with quality apparel. The line features pieces like retro-striped and strappy bras, boyfriend tees, and cropped fleece crews. The wide-leg lounge pants are one of Vanessa's favorites because they're the perfect "throw-on-and-go" necessity after a workout, and comfy clothes after fitness classes are, she said, "an after-self-love" type of thing for her. Vanessa also highlighted one of the mesh sets: a high-waisted legging and bra pair with material that's similar to black fishnet. "It's really breathable, you feel really supported, and it looks kind of sexy," she said. Then, there's the floral-printed pieces, which stood out to me the most because, for flowers, they're quite fierce. The print was inspired by one of her favorite Adidas sweaters.
This collection, she said, represents her: a person who "loves fitness and wants to feel confident." It's a collection for the modern woman always on the go. "We are all built differently for a reason, but I think that it is really important to be healthy and to be fit because it's not just a physical thing, it's a mental thing, too," Vanessa said. "If you push yourself physically, then you know that you can conquer anything, and then you go into the rest of the day and the world and feel more confident, because you know you can achieve whatever you set your mind to." Ahead, check out some of the Avia Vanessa Hudgens collection available now at avia.com and select Macy's stores. Prices range from $38 to $74, and there's so much variety, you'll want it all.
