On Earth Day, Turn Your Jog Into a "Plog" by Picking Up Trash Along the Way
We typically think about workouts in terms of what they can do for our bodies. With Earth Day upon us, though, it might be time to switch that up. Exercising is good for you, sure - but what if it could help the planet, too?
Allow us to introduce plogging. This Swedish-born trend is simple: put on your running shoes, grab a trash bag, and go for a jog, picking up litter as you go. The name "plogging" is actually an amalgamation of "jogging" and "plocka upp," which is Swedish for "pick up."
Simple, right? And effective - which might be why plogging has slowly grown into a global movement. A quick scroll through the #plogging hashtag on Instagram shows ploggers in Russia, India, Japan, and Italy, to name just a few, and the trend is making its way to the US, too. Laura Lindberg, a runner from New Jersey, told The Washington Post that once she heard about plogging, "It was a no-brainer. I knew I could incorporate it into my runs." She said she even felt a little guilty for not starting it sooner, because of how easy it was: "All you need is a bag."

The environmental and community service benefits of plogging are plain to see, but what about the fitness aspect? Plogging is essentially running combined with intermittent squats, so you're adding more of a muscle-building burn to what's usually just a cardio exercise. (With that in mind, if you're giving plogging a try, make sure to start with a dynamic warmup to your prerun routine, if you haven't already.) The fitness app Lifesum allows you to actually track plogging as an exercise, and according to the app, plogging does in fact burn more calories than a regular jog: 288 calories for 30 minutes of plogging, compared to 235 from jogging.
And if running isn't your thing, there might be another benefit to plogging: it gives you a goal to focus on, one that's not related to your body, weight loss, or the actual exercise. Hate the lung and leg burn of a long run? Scouring the streets and paths for trash can keep you distracted and make your run feel like a success, no matter how fast or slow it was.

Before you head out for a plog, grab a couple of trash bags and pull on a pair of plastic or gardening gloves for safety. Keep an eye out for small pieces of litter, like cigarette butts, bottle caps, and pieces of styrofoam, alongside bigger items like plastic bottles. Grab whatever trash you see and feel comfortable picking up - it's OK to skip things like syringes, for example - then empty your bags in public trash cans along the way or save them until you get home.
The trend might sound strange at first, but it's a simple and effective way to get outside and clean up your community. What better time to try it than right now?

Anytime, Anywhere: This 6-Move Workout For Your Legs and Core Requires Absolutely NO Equipment
If you're constantly traveling or, like me, looking for new workouts to do in your living room, we've got some good news for you: exercise can happen outside of the gym. You don't even need fancy equipment (or any equipment!) for an effective workout; you can get your sweat on doing bodyweight moves basically wherever you so choose. Tommy Powers, the NHL Florida Panthers' strength and conditioning coach and founder of Empowers Performance, emphasized the fact that there are plenty of ways you can get a workout in that require minimal space.
Tommy, who's always on the go with the Panthers, said that a bodyweight circuit is a great for "staying sharp and feeling decent on the road, and you can just make it up as you go. Or, if you have certain body parts you want to work, you can focus on those." For instance, if you wanted to do a lot of abs, he said it's easy to do planks and crunches in a small area. He created a zero-equipment workout for POPSUGAR that will primarily target your lower body and core. Check it out in full ahead.
6-Move No-Equipment Lower-Body and Core Workout
Full-Body Warmup
- Cat Cow: 10 reps
- Down Dog, Plank Push-Up, Up Dog: five reps
- Glute Bridges: 10 reps with a two-second pause at the top
- Single-Leg Glute Bridges: 10 reps each side
- Sit-Ups: five reps (five seconds up; five seconds down)
- Dynamic Front Plank: 30 seconds (for these, alternate moving your hips side to side and your shoulders front to back)
- Dynamic Side Plank: 20 reps each side (for these, do side-plank dips)
Repeat this warmup for a total of two rounds.
6-Move No-Equipment Workout
- Squats: 10 reps
- Single-Leg Romanian Deadlifts: 10 reps each side
- Curtsy Lunges: 10 reps each side
- Creepy Crawlers: 10 reps each side
- Dead Bug: 10 reps
- Tempo Bicycle Crunch: 20 reps each side (five each side slow; five each side fast, two times)
Rest for one minute and repeat this circuit for three rounds total. Tommy said you can decrease how long you rest between rounds if you want a challenge. And, don't forget to do a cooldown stretch.
For more no-equipment workouts, check out these videos or this full-body 20-minute routine. Ahead, see directions for each move Tommy suggested, and get your workout on!
Check Out This Trainer's 6 Favorite Plank Variations For That Oh-So-Good Core Burn
Planks, like chicken soup, are good for the soul. OK, maybe we just want you to do them because they truly target your core, especially the deepest part of your core called the transverse abdominis, or TVA. These are your deep abs that wrap around your waist. Having a strong core is important, because it helps support your spine, and you use these muscles for everyday activities like walking, twisting, even going to the bathroom.
You probably know the basics: regular planks on your hands, elbow (or prone) planks, and side planks, but there are tons of variations that will either bring the intensity or tone it down for modified moves that still burn your core. "Planks are a personal favorite of mine because there are endless modifications and variations you can try to increase or decrease the intensity and keep the movement interesting," Kenzie Hayes, a coach for personal training platform Ladder, ACE-certified group fitness instructor, and personal trainer, told POPSUGAR. "They are beneficial at any stage of a fitness journey, and I believe everyone should work some sort of plank variation into their routine several times per week."
Ahead, check out Kenzie's favorite plank variations: one is foundational, three add an extra challenge, and two are modifications you can try if the others are too hard. Note that these are a list of exercises, not a full workout; we don't recommend doing all these in a row, otherwise your core will be too sore to laugh. Instead, pick a couple and incorporate these into your workouts. Let's get to planking, shall we?
Get Stronger Abs and Build Muscle With This Simple Weightlifting Breathing Technique
There are a lot of things you've got to think about if you're trying to build muscle. How often you're training, the types of lifts you're doing (compound exercises are a trainer favorite), and what you're fueling your body with are all important factors to get stronger and build muscle. Eating protein, carbs, and fat and doing more complex exercises like deadlifts and pull-ups are great for improving strength, but there's one thing you're more than likely not doing - breathing.
Focusing on your breath isn't solely reserved for your favorite yoga class or your meditation practice. Breathing properly while weightlifting can help improve both your core and overall strength. To find out how you should breathe when lifting weights, POPSUGAR spoke to Heather Milton, MS, RCEP, CSCS, an exercise physiologist and clinical specialist at NYU Langone Sports Performance Center.
Why You Should Breathe When Lifting Weights
It may be tempting you hold your breath during your lifts, especially if the weight is heavy, but you've actually got to breathe. "When holding [your] breath, that creates intrathoracic pressure (pressure placed on organs that help with breathing and circulation between the neck and abdomen), which can lead to less blood flow back to the heart," Heather explained. The less blood you have flowing to your heart, the less blood your heart pumps out, which can potentially restrict the amount of blood flowing to your head and other extremities, she continued. If you've ever felt lightheaded while lifting weights, holding your breath could be the culprit.
The Correct Way to Breathe When Lifting Weights
As a general rule of thumb, and to prevent feeling lightheaded and improve your technique, Heather said that "when performing the concentric (muscle shortening) part of the lift, you should exhale." For example, if it's leg day and you're performing squats, you should exhale every time you push the weight up, coming to a standing position. This means that you should also inhale every time you lower the weight down, also known as the eccentric (muscle lengthening) portion of the lift.
Another reason you should focus on your breath during your strength workouts is because, "Breathing with correct timing can improve core muscle engagement and enable better lift mechanics and strength," Heather explained.
Breathing alone won't help you lower your body fat percentage - you've still got to focus on things like progressive overload, being consistent with your training program, and providing your body with the proper nutrients - but it can definitely help. Now it's time to put your new breathing skills to use with this four-week muscle-building workout plan.

When Scarlett Johansson joined her castmates for the Avengers: Endgame fan event in the UK, she must've hushed the crowds. The actress's satin Tom Ford pantsuit was sliced down the center and featured just one sleeve, though her trousers were simple and sophisticated. Scarlett completed her outfit with stunning Nikos Koulis drop earrings and a matching cuff, along with a deep red lip, but she didn't need more than classic pumps to finish it off. Moschino Released a Sims-Inspired Collection - Yes, For Real-Life People
The Sims just got a high-fashion makeover: Moschino has announced a capsule collection inspired by the nostalgic life simulation video game, which is actually celebrating its 20th anniversary next year. The range consists of clothing, accessories, swimwear, and even phone cases in various pixelated prints. The signature green diamond - ahem, plumbob - even makes an appearance in the form of drop earrings!
"I love the idea of being able to imagine, design, and bring to life a world of individual personas with The Sims universe," said Moschino Creative Director Jeremy Scott in a press statement. "That concept emulates what I get to do for each collection at Moschino as I create a fantasy universe of spectacular storylines and characters."
While the news is at first unexpected, it makes sense given the influence of pop culture in many of the brand's designs, runway shows, and campaigns. The Moschino x Sims collection will be available at boutiques worldwide and online starting April 13. See the slightly trippy campaign ahead.

Bebe Rexha's Red Carpet Looks Are So Sexy, You'll Need a Cold Shower After Seeing Them
"I like my curves," Bebe Rexha said recently, as she bemoaned the lack of inclusion in the fashion industry that led to some designers refusing to dress her for the Grammys. As a size 8, Bebe was apparently "too big" to fit into the samples some labels offered, so instead she hit the red carpet in a custom gown by Monsoori that made the most of every single one of those curves. And Bebe is definitely not one to let fashion prejudice keep her down. Instead, she's made a name for herself by choosing a succession of sexy, revealing red carpet looks that make the most of those curves. Whether that's a cut-to-the-navel jumpsuit by Michael Costello, a Christian Siriano gown with a sexy split, or a Balmain mini and thigh-high boots, she knows how to grab attention. Don't believe us? Keep reading to see for yourself as we look back at some of her sexiest red carpet moments.
This Mickey T-Shirt Is the Quickest $26 I've Ever Spent at Zara
How do I explain to you that this day is the best day ever simply because I bought this t-shirt, without you thinking I'm exaggerating? What if I told you my two favorite things in the world are Disney and running, then would this all start to make sense? And let me just say, as a fashion editor who appreciates a good Zara haul, I have never in my life (seriously, not once!) arrived at Zara's site and checked out immediately with just one item in my cart. In my experience, you don't just buy something at Zara without browsing through virtually every category. You could be missing great things!
But, my friends, this time I knew there was simply nothing better than this tee. Your Fendi baguette may be your most prized possession, but something like this is mine. I treasure the shirts that make strangers stop dead in their tracks at Epcot and point at me, wide-eyed, begging, "Where did you get that? Did you find that here?" I can picture it now - how I'll smirk, knowingly, and nod my head. "It's pretty great, right? I got it a long time ago at Zara." Also, JIC you think I am all talk and didn't actually go through with this transaction exactly as I've detailed above, you can scroll for pure proof. My fellow Disney freaks, marathon runners, and Zara shoppers everywhere, I invite you to join me.

Chrissy Metz Found the Comfiest Shoes For Owning the Red Carpet, and I Want Them Now
All eyes were on Chrissy Metz at the Los Angeles premiere of her latest film, Breakthrough, and she certainly dressed to impress for the occasion. The 38-year-old actress matched the red carpet in a scarlet sleeveless gown with sheer black overlay, and although her dress certainly caught our eye, we couldn't help but give our undivided attention to her shoes.
A pair of black Stuart Weitzman sandals with low block heels and ankle straps, they're Chrissy's personal go-to for red carpet appearances, and it's easy to see why. Every gal should have a pair (or two) of versatile, comfy heels like hers, wouldn't you agree? They're ideal for tearing up the dance floor at a wedding, enjoying date night sans foot pain, or, ya know, owning the red carpet like a superstar. Shop Chrissy's exact Stuart Weitzman sandals ahead, then check out all the details on the green dress her This Is Us costar Mandy Moore wore to the Breakthrough premiere.

Michelle Obama's Slitted Trousers Are Becoming Every Boss Lady's Wardrobe Staple
All the trimmings on Michelle Obama's fancy-shmancy Dundas blazer - those emerald beads! That luxe, satin sash! - are certainly enough to distract you from the cut of her trousers. But we wouldn't let that happen, not when the silhouette is quickly becoming one of the most covetable workwear staples of 2019. That tiny slit at the ankle elongates the legs and also draws attention to your pumps, even if they're simple and classic, like Michelle's patent pair.
It's a modern take on a tailored tuxedo, and it's even a touch more casual if you want to team these pants with a white t-shirt for date night. Michelle wore the full designer co-ord set while onstage with Phoebe Robinson to promote Becoming in Norway. She jazzed it up with diamond rings and a turquoise manicure, looking every bit the professional with an eye for fashion. Ahead, get an all-angles view, then shop similar slacks for the office, the red carpet, your next wedding, or anywhere else, really.

10 Sweet Ways I Show My Partner Every Day Just How Much I Care
Whether it's saying "I love you" before you both fall asleep at night or saying "no" to the dessert menu on date night when your partner is attempting to diet, there are a million ways to show how much you care about your significant other every single day. Most of the time, words aren't even needed to convey your love and appreciation. From taking care of the chores to planning a couples' getaway, any relationship could benefit from a little extra love, because even if you know how you feel, it never hurts to remind your partner. Here's just a few tiny ways I tell my partner just how much I care - no words required.
I Learned the Hard Way That Dating a Coworker Is the Worst Idea Ever
"Oh, crap!" I thought when I first I saw him. A new, very hot guy had started working at my office, and I knew right away it would be a problem. I wanted to go out with him, and no matter how many times I tried telling myself it wasn't a good idea because we worked together, I didn't listen. This guy was so my type, it hurt. After a few weeks of shy glances from the water fountain, our coworker introduced us before the company holiday party. I couldn't wait to talk to him in a less formal setting, and did we ever.
After a few (too many) drinks, I built up enough courage to get my flirt on and ended up spending the entire night getting to know the guy I'd been admiring from afar since he started. He was smart and funny, which only intensified my crush. And he kissed me! I think I floated home, which may have had something to do with my booze intake, but mostly it was because the guy I liked seemingly liked me too. Sigh. Life was good.

Just as I was about to ponder sleeping under my desk to avoid seeing [my coworker], an email popped up. It was from him.
After a very awkward next day of being hungover and slightly avoiding each other, we ended up talking more, and he asked me out. When Saturday rolled around, I was so focused on getting ready and looking perfect that I barely noticed how late he was picking me up. In fact, he was over an hour late. Then two. Then three. He wasn't coming. I'd been stood up.
To say Monday morning was awkward is an understatement. I wanted to hide behind the copy machine. But just as I was about to ponder sleeping under my desk to avoid seeing the guy formerly known as my crush but still known as my coworker, an email popped up. It was from him. He claimed to have fallen asleep the night of our date and was too embarrassed to talk to me. I wanted to tell him where to shove it but instead ended up agreeing to go out with him again. I don't know why I decided to give him another chance, but he actually showed up this time. We had fun and continued our date back at my place.

I thought everything was fine, but then he literally never talked to me again. Seriously . . . nothing. Work was hell. He ignored me completely. It was super uncomfortable at first, but the silent treatment lasted so long that we passed uncomfortable and landed on normalcy. To this day, years later, I still don't know why he acted like such a jerk. Thinking he just didn't like me back was bad enough, but having to see him every day was way worse. Good thing we rarely had to interact for work purposes. When we did, I'm pretty sure my face turned the color of the scarlet letter, which I sometimes felt like I was wearing, wondering who in our office knew what had happened.
After that, I vowed to never date a coworker again. A promise I stuck to when a guy in another department asked me out a few months later. I told him I just didn't want to date anyone from work, and he understood. How many people could I avoid on a daily basis?

Aquaman and Mera Say Their "I Dos" on the Beach in This Steamy, Sparkling Wedding Shoot
Move over, Ariel and Eric! Aquaman and Mera are about to dethrone the Disney couple with this dazzlingly romantic beach wedding. The two characters have electric chemistry on the big screen in the recent adaptation, and it certainly transferred into this photo shoot that was put together by Cristina of Hermosa Weddings and Events at the Salinas River State Beach in Moss Landing, CA.
"Many DC elements related to Aquaman and his alter ego Arthur Curry were incorporated throughout the design," Cristina said. "The entire design revolved around the colors orange and green, since Aquaman's costume in the DC comic books is orange and green." She also drew upon the sea for inspiration as an ode to Aquaman and Mera's underwater home of Atlantis. The table is a treasure chest draped with linen resembling golden sand and decorated with delicate glass charger plates shaped in the form of shells with elegant turquoise wine glasses. And take a closer look at those place cards . . . some of the names might look familiar if you are a fan of the DC universe. From the sparkling decor details to the couple's steamy sunset ocean shots, take in all the stunning photos of this fantastical beach wedding now!
Just Got AirPods? Here's How to Connect Them to Your Phone
With each new Apple release, the company's products seem to get more and more advanced. Whether it's smartphones with zero buttons, devices that double as a scanner, or offering full magazines at the touch of a button, Apple is truly modernizing the way we stay connected. And one of their more recent (and massively popular) releases are AirPods, or wireless pods that act as headphones. And good news: despite being so high tech, connecting AirPods to your phone is actually incredibly easy.
If you're connecting your AirPods to your phone for the first time, you'll need to make sure that your smartphone is operating at iOS 10 or later. After you have this confirmed, open the pods' case (keep the headphones inside, they don't need to come out yet!) and hold the case directly next to your phone. An image of your pods and its case should pop up on the screen. Tap "Connect," "Done," and that's it! If you're already logged into iCloud, your pods become instantly linked with whatever device is associated with that Apple ID.
From here, all you have to do is throw in your AirPods and select what music you would like to listen to. But want to know what's even cooler? When you remove them from your ears they automatically stop playing. That means no more fiddling to hit the pause button!
Here's What to Do If You Don't Like Your Engagement Ring
Your partner just proposed and you're super excited (naturally), but there's just one teeny, tiny problem: you can't stand your engagement ring. Being stressed is totally normal, as you don't want to insult the person you love or appear difficult, but you also really don't want to have to live with that ring on your finger for the rest of your life. And if you've been one to fantasize about this moment and what your ring might look like, including the cut, design, and type of diamond you've always envisioned, it can be hard to settle for something that isn't what you had in mind. The good news is, you can definitely get the ring you want without compromising your relationship. Here's what to do.
1. Speak Up
First off, you need to say something if you're unhappy or else your partner will never know and you'll be stuck with that ring forever. "Do be honest with yourself about how you feel. If you don't like your ring, you can't 'unfeel' that emotion, and repressing the feeling isn't going to help," relationship counselor David Bennett told POPSUGAR. "If anything, you may become resentful toward your partner. I suggest honestly expressing your feelings, but do so in a way that takes their feelings into account. Many people will hear a criticism of the ring as a personal criticism of them."
2. How to Tell Them
You may be feeling upset that your partner chose a ring you didn't like, but they may also be upset that you didn't like the ring they carefully chose and spent a lot of time picking out. The best thing to do is sit down and show empathy for them, David said. Be gentle in your tone and come from a good place.
3. Don't Act Entitled or Greedy
If you want a new ring, make sure you choose one that works with their budget and that you don't make it seem as though you're upset with the cost rather than just the look of it. "If you act entitled to a new ring that's the absolute best and only the best, it may have the effect of permanently straining the relationship," he continued. "It could be taken as entitlement, a very unappealing trait for a long-term partner."
4. How to Choose a New One
While you're the one choosing your new ring (and you should be vocal and stand up for what you want), have a clear design in place that's at a similar price point to the original, and also let your partner feel a part of the process. Don't just go swap it yourself. "An engagement ring is ultimately a gift. If you demand it, it isn't a gift; that's called a ransom," David said. "Work with your partner and allow them to have some say in the process." You should also be flexible and see the bigger picture: a ring (and its size, shape, and cost) doesn't determine the love and commitment that goes into a relationship. "I'm a firm believer that engagements and marriages are more important than rings and weddings," he said. "So when evaluating your current ring or choosing a new one, consider things like relationship happiness and financial limitations."

Yes, the Louvre, as in that superfamous monument in Paris that houses some of the world's most renowned works of art, including the "Mona Lisa." This may sound too good to possibly be true, but it's very real and most definitely a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity if I've ever seen one.
Airbnb's Night@ franchise is hosting the contest in honor of the Louvre Pyramid's 30th anniversary, granting one winner and their guest up-close-and-personal access to the Paris museum's masterpieces - without all the usual selfie-stick-toting tourists around. On April 30, the two art-lovers will first be greeted by an art historian who will guide them on a personal tour of the grounds (which is something that only the likes of Barack Obama, Beyoncé, and JAY-Z have done, BTW). Following the tour, the pair will then enjoy a drink while sitting in front of Leonardo da Vinci's one and only "Mona Lisa" painting (cheers, Mona!), and chow down on dinner in the presence of the "Venus de Milo" statue. To cap the night off, the contest winners will lounge and sleep under the museum's Instagram-famous glass pyramid in a mini lookalike version.
I'm sure at this point your eyes are wide in disbelief and you're wondering, "OK, how the heck do I enter this contest?!" All you have to do is visit airbnb.com/louvre before April 12 and answer the following question: why would you be the Mona Lisa's perfect guest? Easy enough, right? Before brainstorming your answer, check out a sneak peek of what the experience will look like below, and you'll definitely feel inspired to come up with the most creative answer possible.
I Reunited With My First Love in Adulthood . . . and It Was a Disaster
It's the stuff rom-coms are made of: teen boy meets teen girl, and they fall in love, have typically dramatic breakup, reunite as adults, and realize the spark never died. Wedded bliss ensues, right? Right?
When my first love came sweeping back into my life a few years ago, I couldn't help but think that we were stepping into the happy ending of a Hallmark movie. After all, if cheesy films taught me anything, it's that the bigger the drama, the truer the love, right? And boy, did we have drama.
John and I were each other's first loves, but as they say, the course of true love never ran smooth. Back in high school, he won me over with his brash charm and secret romantic side, but to everyone else, he was known as a hothead with a hair-trigger temper. A soccer star, John was as infamous for his tantrums as he was for his hat-tricks. One time, he actually threw a folding chair at a referee, a move (dumb) 17-year-old me found exciting and manly. "That's not a red card, that's a red flag," my best friend Erin said at the time, but I just rolled my eyes and screeched that John was simply trying to find himself.
"I wasted the last 10 years of my life without you, and I don't want to waste one more," he declared.
But the occasional game-day meltdown (which he always laughed off) wasn't John's only sin. The morning after I lost my virginity to him, I found out he'd cheated on me with my friend Liza. Numb and reeling from the betrayal, I dumped him and never spoke to Liza again, which added a layer of pain and unfairness to an already agonizing situation. He went off to USC, and I threw myself into life at Cal Poly, not dating anyone seriously until senior year.
I kept up with John through mutual friends; I refused to add him on Facebook (I love a good grudge), so Erin would feed me info about him, from his burgeoning real estate company to the fact that he was - ahem! - still single and would ask about me whenever he ran into her.
Obviously John had grown up and matured, or at least channeled that tempestuousness into business prowess. So when he texted me "I miss you" out of the blue a decade after we called it quits, I found myself more than willing to pick up where we left off. I couldn't help but be mesmerized by the idea of ending up with my first love. What could be more romantic than that? Besides, after five years of dating in New York City, I was aching for someone who knew the real me and who loved me when I was a dorky teen with a Justin Timberlake obsession.
After a flurry of FaceTimes and late-night calls just like way back when, John said he was coming to Manhattan for business - and to see me. "I wasted the last 10 years of my life without you, and I don't want to waste one more," he declared with the same boldness I'd fallen for as a teen, reinforcing my belief that, yes, all those youthful indiscretions were just that!
Well.
The first three days were spent in a bliss cocoon. I felt 17 again and giddily in love. All of John's typical teenage boy "feelings are stupid" vibes were gone, replaced by a steady and sure, grown-ass man. On day four, we had a wine-soaked dinner with his business partners, all friends since their frat days. The boys joked and teased each other in good fun, but things took a turn when John ribbed his partner Brian over his failed first marriage.
"Ha!" Brian guffawed, taking another slug of Cabernet. "Tough talk from a guy whose hairline is making a run for it." My eyes flashed to John's face, and I froze - it was the same look as when he'd tried to take off a man's head with a metal chair.
In an instant, there was the sound of shattering glass. John had lobbed his water glass at the wall, nearly hitting a waitress. Before anyone could react, he stalked out of the restaurant and into the humid Summer night. We sat there, stunned and horrified. Had that just happened? Brian peeled off a few $100 bills to smooth things over with the staff, and I went to John's hotel, where I found him . . . completely unbothered.
"Yeah, sorry, Brian was just pissing me off," he said flatly, flipping through channels before switching off the TV and taking my hands in his. "Listen, thank you for putting up with me. You always have, and I know I don't deserve it. You're my angel, and I . . . I love you."
Even when we were dating, he'd never said it. Maybe part of him knew that this was exactly the right time to drop those three words to reel me back in. And I'm sad to say it worked. I put the incident behind us and spent the next week back in a happy(ish) bubble with him.
The night before John was set to leave, we had a long talk. He asked me to move back to LA with him, and I found myself saying yes. It all just seemed perfect, right? I mean, Brian probably knew better than to tease John about his hair. Who could blame him for flipping out, right?
"Look, I want to tell you something," he said slowly. "I just want us to start our lives together being honest, so . . . a few weeks ago, I slept with Erin."
"Erin, like, my best friend Erin?"
I actually laughed, because I couldn't believe it was true. A few weeks ago, John and I were already talking again. And even if we weren't, my best friend slept with my first love? Was I hallucinating? Was this happening?
I don't even fully remember what John said next, I was too disgusted to even hear him. Something about running into her after too many beers and only wanting her because she reminded him of me. That's when suddenly, while sitting on the bed in the Gramercy Park Hotel, it all became so painfully clear: John had not changed. He was still the same thoughtless, reckless, violent guy everyone else recognized him as. Only now he was just dressed up in a fancy suit. And he definitely didn't love me. If he did, he'd at least have had the courtesy to cheat with strangers instead of my best friends.
And even worse, I had to ask myself whether or not I had changed. Or was I basically just the same smitten teenage girl willing to make excuses for her obviously bad-news boyfriend, all in the name of some juvenile fairy-tale ending? I answered myself by walking out of John's hotel without uttering one more word to him - and haven't since. I blocked his number and told my friends to do the same. At least, the mutual friends I had left; Erin weepily apologized when confronted, but I couldn't bring myself to stay friends with her. Just like when I was 17, I'd lost the guy and the girl.
Looking back, I realized that life isn't - and shouldn't be - a rom-com plot. And getting caught up in the mythology of your first love can be a recipe for disaster. On one hand, yes, timing really is everything. But it's called a breakup because it's broken. So from now on, I'll keep my recycling to paper and plastic - not men!
What Happens When You Don't Have Enough Friends to Be Your Bridesmaids?
Whoever said that it's "better to have just a few close friends than lots of shallow friends" clearly never had to put together a bridal party with only two girlfriends.
When I realized my husband - then boyfriend - was probably going to propose soon, a wave of anxiety washed over me. Not because I didn't want to get married - I had wanted to marry him since our second date. The anxiety had more to do with the fact that I only had two female friends, while my boyfriend had an entire entourage of buddies. While he joked about "narrowing down" the options for groomsmen, I stayed up at night worrying about whether I could get a Real Doll to animate down the aisle behind me.
Even though I wasn't engaged yet, I knew that I needed to start making bridesmaid-worthy friends long before the engagement. I mean, who wants to be a bridesmaid for someone they just met? So I went on my hunt for new girlfriends.
First of all, I should explain that I've never had much luck with female friends. I know what you're thinking. And the answer is no, I'm not about to say that girls are so much drama and so catty, and I just like beer and football and being "one of the guys" (all while wearing a crop top and eyelash extensions because, tee hee, girls are so jealous of how hot I am!). No. I am a girlie-girl, I hate football, and I don't think anyone is jealous of me. I'm just socially awkward. I probably talk too much about myself. I don't ask questions about where people are from or where they work, because I don't really care. I'd much rather hear about whether or not they secretly resent their mothers. I overshare. I go up to people at parties and ask them if they see a therapist and when they lost their virginity. It also doesn't help that girls bullied me throughout middle school until I switched schools - in 2002, my "best friends" voted me off their cafeteria table à la Survivor, and they literally said "the tribe has spoken" - so I go into any interactions with women with an underlying level of social anxiety. I suppose men don't find me any more palatable than women do, but I've never actively tried to find platonic male friends, so I wouldn't know.
My hunt for new female friends proved challenging. I felt like a struggling pickup artist who was one rejection away from going full neck-beard.
In any case, my hunt for new female friends proved challenging. I felt like a struggling pickup artist who was one rejection away from going full-neckbeard. I would go up to girls at bars, at parties, or at work, and try to get to know them, get their numbers, and "hang out sometime." My opener? "Oh my god, I love your top!" This quickly became very demoralizing.
A few girls in particular stick out to me. There was Debbie, a girl I met at a costume party in a hotel venue, who immediately traded numbers with me and said she wanted to hang out. I never heard from her until three years later when she emailed me asking me to ghost write her autobiography.
Then there were the many, many girls I met at house parties. I'd open with "Oh my god, I love your top," and often they'd trade numbers with me after having an hour-long drunken conversation over a bottle of Trader Joe's chardonnay. I'd text them the next day to say it was great meeting them, they'd say "oh my god, me too!", then I'd text them later that week to see if they wanted to go out that weekend. They would never reply.
Sometimes I couldn't even get a number. I met a girl around my age at my gym who lamented being new in town and having such a hard time making friends. Figuring this was some kind of hint that I should befriend her, I asked for her number and said I'd be happy to show her around the city. She gave me a fake number.
Occasionally, I got a little farther than a number. I had more "first dates" than I can remember. They never went badly (at least not from my end), but they also never resulted in a second date. Only repeated texts that, "We have to do that again sometime, but so busy!"
At this point you are probably thinking, "Why go to all this trouble? So what, you had two friends. Just rock those two friends in your mismatched wedding party and embrace being weird!"
Here's the thing: no. I would not succumb to defeat and admit that I only had two friends. It was just too humiliating. And I had endured enough humiliation in my life already to not want my wedding to be a continuation of that. Even my boyfriend seemed a little embarrassed. He would egg me on in my hunt, point at random girls at parties and say, "She seems like a good potential bridesmaid!" Maybe a part of him was afraid that if I didn't make more friends - and fast - he'd have to drop all but two of his friends to be his groomsmen. I wanted my wedding to be the best day of my life, and I had a feeling it would be marred with embarrassment if the dark cloud of, "You only have two friends, and they're both closer with other people than they are with you," loomed over me the whole time.
As it turned out, my hunt for new female friends was completely fruitless. I eventually did make another close friend (who I still consider close), but she was actually someone I had met right after graduating college, years before my bridesmaid hunt. I just never made any effort with her during that time, because I assumed she was too cool to want to hang out with me. As it turned out, she wasn't. Unfortunately, we had only just became friends when I got engaged. At my engagement party, I pulled her aside and asked her if she wanted to be a bridesmaid. I told her that I knew we weren't that close, but I had a feeling we would be very close someday. She declined - boy, was that awkward for both of us - but years later she jokes that I had the right hunch about our friendship all along.
By the time I actually got married, I'll admit that my bridal party didn't really look how I wanted it to. I only had four bridesmaids, which meant my fiancé had to cull people from his lineup. (I only hope he didn't tell the disappointed gentlemen why: "My bride is just really unlikeable!") Realizing that I wasn't actually anybody's "best friend," I made my younger brother my maid of honor, because when it came down to it, I was closer with him than any other eligible friend. (He even attended the bachelorette party and partook in all the bridal activities, but drew the line at attending a pole-dancing class.) I also added my cousin as the fourth bridesmaid. Even though we weren't always in regular communication, she wound up being an awesome, supportive bridesmaid and a fantastic wedding planner to boot.
What I didn't realize was how facing my "fear" head on - having a very small bridal party with only two people not related to me - would make me so much more comfortable talking to other women. After my wedding, I no longer had a specific goal when I met a woman. I could focus strictly on whether or not we actually had anything in common, instead of imagining whether this person I just met would be OK with wearing pastel yellow or if she'd request a more flattering color. Now, several years out since my wedding, I'm still not everybody's cup of tea (just the other day I asked a stranger at a party if they ever wanted children), but I have a deeply satisfying spectrum of female friends. I'm not strictly focused on the amount of friends anymore, but I finally have more than two, so that's nice.

There's a Floating Taco Bar in the Caribbean, So Excuse Us While We Fly There and Never Come Back
The Caribbean's first-ever floating taco and cocktail bar, Lime Out, recently opened in St. John, and it's the whole reason the US Virgin Islands just landed the top spot on our bucket list. The new eatery that floats 200 feet off Hansen Bay Beach can only be reached by kayak, paddle board, or a power boat. There's even a drive-through-style service for boats passing by and a sea-level wooden bar with submerged bar stools for those looking to stay a while.
"The East end of St. John is amazing, pristine, and untouched, and we're trying to honor that by inviting people to enjoy all of its beauty and having really delicious tacos and cocktails while doing it," Chelsea Baranowski told POPSUGAR. Baranowski owns Lime Out and built the bar with her husband, Richard.
Lime Out's head chef, Amaro Rivera, only uses the freshest ingredients for the tacos, which he designed himself. The menu includes 11 specially crafted tacos, including fresh-catch ceviche, surf and turf, rum ribs, shrimp, green curry chicken, and more. Their goal is to source everything locally to ensure the best quality products, and according to Baranowski, there are already plans to expand the menu.
If tacos aren't really your thing, the floating bar's craft cocktails are sure to get your attention. All cocktails are made with freshly squeezed juice and embrace the tropical vibes. For example, "The Danger" cocktail is mixed with fresh watermelon juice, lime juice, Thai chili-infused tequila, and pineapple. "This concept has been my husband Richard's dream for over two-and-a-half years," she continued. "He's been drawing it in the sand and designing it for [a long time]. The Virgin Islands need more options for locals and visitors who are seeking a totally different dining experience, so this is our version of [that]."
Better yet, the bar is eco-friendly, using recyclable cups, no straws, and biodegradable taco containers. Since being environmentally conscious is a priority, the team also does a regular check under the boat to clean up anything that may have dropped. Love Ginger Beer but Have No Idea What's in It? We've Got Answers
If you're a regular drinker of ginger beer, you probably already know that there's no alcohol in most of them - so that means you can drink as many as you want, right? Ginger is healthy, so why not? Not so fast.
Although ginger beer doesn't contain alcohol, making it more akin to root beer than the tasty offerings from breweries, the formula is more or less that of a soda, though stronger in flavor, consisting mostly of ginger root, sugar or syrup, dry yeast, lemon, and carbonated water. You already know that sugary beverages are best drank occasionally (and that plain water is always best for your waistline and health), so moderation is still in order when it comes to ginger beer. The typical calorie count for ginger beer is fairly steep. It ranges from 14 to 16 calories per ounce or 168 to 192 calories for a 12-ounce bottle.
You're not wrong in thinking there are health benefits to ginger, though. Ginger root is known for its ability to relieve nausea, and studies show it also is effective in reducing motion sickness, pain, and inflammation - and possibly even helping to reduce cholesterol and prevent colon cancer. Ginger also contains minerals and nutrients including iron, potassium, magnesium, zinc, folate, and niacin, but we're talking about the real thing. Stick to tea if you want to reap the benefits.

Oh? This Restaurant Replaces the Bread on Its Sandwiches With Pickles
Pickle stans, have you heard? There's a restaurant in New Jersey that replaces the bread on its sandwiches with giant pickles - because clearly a simple pickle slice as a garnish isn't enough to satisfy your pickle-loving appetite. The restaurant in question, Elsie's, has gone viral in the last week after a video surfaced of the eatery building out its signature pickle sandwich, The Real Dill. It's basically just a bunch of assorted deli meats, cheese, and toppings piled in between two very large pickle slices, which sounds like a pretty ideal solution for when you're in the mood to enjoy a sandwich without the added carbs.
FYI, in case a pickle sandwich sounds like a bit much for you, Elsie's also serves pickle and cucumber roll-ups that are served like sushi and filled with meats and toppings like falafel, roast beef, roasted turkey, and ham. Read ahead to take a look at both dishes in all of their sour, crunchy goodness.
