At 17, I Had to Go to Court to Fight For My Abortion

When I was 17, I found out I was pregnant. I knew immediately that I needed to have an abortion.

I had just gotten into the University of Texas at San Antonio and was ready to change cities and start working toward a career in electrical engineering. I knew I definitely wasn't ready to start a family. But in Texas, the law said I needed my parents' permission to have an abortion.

I cried and panicked, unsure what I would do if I couldn't get the abortion.

My father is religious and conservative, and I knew I couldn't talk to him about it. I wasn't sure my mom would give me permission, and I was scared that even asking her would pull us further apart. I cried and panicked, unsure what I would do if I couldn't get the abortion.

Thirty-seven states require a parent to be involved in a minor's abortion: 21 require parental consent and 11 require parental notification; five states require both consent and notification. Florida is currently considering legislation that would require notarized parental permission, bumping parental-involvement states up to 38.

If they can't get parent permission, the Florida bill would require minors to appear before a judge and prove that they are "mature"; the judge gets to decide if they can get an abortion. The process is called judicial bypass, and I went through it in Texas.

In Texas, there is a nonprofit called Jane's Due Process that helps minors navigate the judicial bypass process. But most states don't have Jane's Due Process, making it harder to find a lawyer who can help you. Many teens must appear before the judge themselves, unprepared to face a legal proceeding about a private medical decision.

I reached out to Jane's Due Process and was fortunately able to meet with a lawyer, who walked me through the many steps I needed to get through before appearing before the judge, including getting a sonogram and working with my lawyer to compile evidence of my maturity.

I was nervous to appear before the judge; it seemed like anything could happen. I felt like if I messed up when I spoke or left out something for my case, the judge would rule against me and I wouldn't be able to get my abortion. It felt like I was being treated like a criminal when all I wanted to do was get an abortion.

Ultimately the judge ruled in my favor. But I still had to deal with cost and travel, barriers that are harder for young people - especially teenagers - to overcome. In some places, you have to wait for weeks and drive for hours to get an appointment at the nearest clinic. When you add the delay of having to appear before a judge, it's even longer before you can get the abortion, pushing it further into your pregnancy, and making the cost even higher.

Young people like me are responsible enough to make our own decisions about whether or not we want to have a child. I knew that if I couldn't have the abortion I might not be able to finish school and wouldn't be able to create the life I have planned. That's why Florida Bill HB 1335, and the many laws like it around the country, are so harmful and unjust. And the judicial bypass, which legislators claim is intended to help those who can't get parental permission, is actually designed to discourage minors and influence their decision.

I started sharing my story to try to change parental notification laws and others that threaten abortion access. We all have the right to end a pregnancy if we're not ready to carry it to term - and to make that decision on our own, without parents, lawyers, or judges.

My Partner and I Took Our Sweet Time Before Saying "I Do," Because What's the Rush?

My husband and I dated for almost 10 years before finally tying the knot. We met during our freshman year of college, stumbling into each other in the basement at a party. As many 18-year-olds, we were wild and naïve. I guess we were both late bloomers because it took us a while to get the hang of the whole being a couple thing. And while our relationship has been very far from perfect, the one thing I am happy we decided as a couple was to wait to get engaged, because why rush it?

Yes, my husband and I were both a little wild when we first met each other. While we couldn't ignore the chemistry we had between us, we also refused to commit right away. A few times, we toyed with the idea of being together, really together, but it never lasted quite long enough. That may sound like we were both being insensitive or selfish, but I think that deep down, we both just knew that we were too immature to settle down at such a young age.

But finally, during our junior year of college, we had had enough. We made it official and dated no one else. We learned to enjoy the rest of college, wild still, but this time together. After graduation, I went on to graduate school, and my husband got a job. He even bought a house. We danced around the big marriage conversation many times, too. Honestly, I felt like he was feeling a little pressure from good old society because some of his other friends were getting engaged. But I certainly did not want him to feel that way. If it ain't broke, don't fix it, right?

I told him, "Look, there is no rush in getting married right now. You are getting settled into your career, and I still need to start mine myself."

The stress flew off his shoulders. "Really?" he asked. "I'm honestly so relieved!"

We simply enjoyed each other as a young couple. The fact that we were getting a tad older didn't necessarily mean that we had to get married yet.

From here, we simply enjoyed each other as a young couple. We lived a commute away, and I didn't move in with him. Looking back, it was such a fun time for us. We'd make plans each weekend. We'd hit up big sporting events, concerts, weekend trips, and of course, bars. The fact that we were getting a tad older didn't necessarily mean that we had to get married yet. We were too busy settling into the realities of adulthood and making memories for ourselves, too.

Once we settled into our late 20s, we were finally ready. My now husband took me on a beautiful hike near Lake Michigan on a crystal blue Fall morning. Once we circled back to the beach, he dug his knee into the sand and pulled out a ring. "We've waited long enough, don't you think?" he said. "Will you marry me?" We said "yes" to our marriage in our own time.

We needed that time - time to mature individually, time to grow as a couple, and time to just have fun together.

Many of our friends met and got married much quicker, but for us, well, we needed that time - time to mature individually, time to grow as a couple, and time to just have fun together. My husband and I didn't want to fall into the seriousness of planning for a wedding too soon, because honestly, we just weren't ready.

I'm thrilled that we waited almost 10 years, because you know that honeymoon phase? While some of the fireworks weren't as hot as other newer couples might have experienced, we also didn't have to take the time to get used to each other. We already knew our partner's pet peeves, quirks, and little annoyances. He accepted the fact that I left empty water glasses all over the house, and I got over him falling asleep on the couch some nights. You see, there was no more learning curve. And it turned out that we still were crazy for one another despite all of that. I mean, we did have almost 10 years of practice behind us, after all.

If You're Eating Any of These Foods Late in the Evening, They Could Be Messing With Your Sleep

There are so many things that can disrupt your sleep - from stress about work deadlines to the temperature of the room - but if you find yourself tossing and turning after a late night with friends or an indulgent meal at home, you may need to reevaluate your eating habits.

Eating too close to bedtime can be especially problematic if you're prone to heartburn. "Laying horizontally after a meal can allow stomach acid to travel back up the esophagus, leading to a bitter taste in the mouth or burning in the chest," Lauren Cadillac, a registered dietitian in New York City, told POPSUGAR. "In addition to spicy foods, acidic foods like tomatoes, tomato sauce, and citrus fruits may be problematic, and chocolate may also worsen reflux."

Foods and beverages that contain caffeine, such as coffee, tea, and soda, should be avoided as well, she added. Caffeine blocks a chemical that helps make you sleepy, and it's also a diuretic, which can cause you to make a trip to the bathroom during the night. Lauren recommends cutting yourself off from caffeine after lunchtime.

"Eating a large meal right before bedtime can also affect your ability to sleep," Lauren said. "If your stomach feels overly full and you can feel the contents churning, this can cause discomfort and prevent you from falling asleep. A high-protein or high-fat meal is more difficult to digest and should be avoided before bed."

If you find you're still hungry in the late evening, Lauren suggests eating a carbohydrate-rich snack, such as a small cup of oatmeal or rice cake with peanut butter, which may increase the level of the sleep-inducing amino acid tryptophan in the blood. When you're mindful, food can actually help ease you into sleep instead of keeping you up.

Grab 2 Dumbbells and Get Ready to Crush This Trainer's 4-Move Arms and Abs Workout

You don't have to hit the gym for an hour plus in order to get a good workout in. Don't believe us? Just check out Kelsey Wells's latest workout video on Instagram. Because life can get crazy, Kelsey's expanded her PWR Program with PWR at Home, workouts you can do at home and even while traveling.

"Many apartments and hotels have gyms, but they have very limited space and equipment," Kelsey said in her caption. Instead of stressing about the lack of equipment, Kelsey's solution is simple: use the dumbbells. To save time Kelsey skipped straight sets (completing all the sets and reps of a given exercise before moving to the next exercise) and opted for supersets. Not only will supersets save time, the little rest in between each set will really get your heart rate up.

If you're short on time, definitely give Kelsey's PWR at Home workout a shot.

The Arms and Abs Workout

Don't forget to warm up before starting the workout. Once you're ready to go, grab a set of dumbbells. "Repeat as many times as possible for six minutes," Kelsey said. Be sure to cool down once you're done!

Take 30 seconds of rest.

Gymnast Alicia Boren Already Won 1st Place on Floor, but She Also Deserves Gold For Her Dance Moves

There's nothing quite like watching college gymnastics. You get to see crazy powerful women defy gravity in ways you never thought possible, and you can tell they're having tons of fun doing it. On April 19, the first night of the NCAA Women's Gymnastics Championships, eight teams vied for spots in Saturday's "Final Four" lineup; all the while, the individual event finals competition played out. Though the University of Florida didn't compete as a team, senior Alicia Boren was crowned floor co-champion with a score of 9.95 alongside UCLA's Kyla "Boss" Ross, Denver's Lynnzee Brown, and Oklahoma's Brenna Dowell (Kyla, by the way, also won vault co-champion).

Alicia's tie for first place marks the third time a Florida Gator received an NCAA floor title, and her routine is one of those performances that make you want to get up and dance with her. Seriously, she's got amazing moves - she throws in some shimmying and does the "nae nae" and cool neck isolations that she makes look easy.

In her floor routine, you'll hear popular music from all genres like Fifth Harmony's "Worth It," MC Hammer's "U Can't Touch This," and Lil Jon & the East Side Boyz's "Get Low." It opens up with a jaw-dropping double layout, and anyone can see she's having a blast throughout. Watch the full performance above, and try not to dance along - we dare you. Congrats, Alicia!

Exactly What to Eat For a Week to Lose Weight, the Healthy Way

It can be hard to know where to begin when you've decided you want to shed some weight. What's important to remember if you're starting a new diet is to make sure you're eating enough food every day so that you're losing weight at a healthy rate. Keep reading for seven days' worth of healthy meals, and if you're on a special diet like vegan or WW, we've got meal plans for you as well.

Icing Might Not Be the Best Way to Heal Sore Muscles, According to Experts

Let's put it this way: sore muscles aren't a ray of sunshine. The kind of sore you feel the day after your superhard Spin class or intense weightlifting session with your trainer is called DOMS, or delayed onset muscle soreness. It's believed to be primarily due to microtears within the muscles leading to gradual inflammation over the first 24 to 48 hours post-workout (though two experts we spoke to in a previous interview told us there's no actual scientific proof). Eccentric contractions, movements that tax your muscles in a lengthened position, can typically cause this stress. So when you're feeling sore, what's there to do? We asked for some professional advice to help you through it.

First Things First: Should I Ice or Heat Sore Muscles?

Short answer: there's conflicting research that ranks one over the other, and there's also research that supports both as useful treatment methods. Stan Dutton, NASM-certified personal trainer and head coach at the fitness app Ladder, told POPSUGAR to avoid ice because "icing has been found to impede recovery in some cases. While our first thought might be that we are experiencing soreness due to inflammation and ice will help reduce that inflammation, that isn't necessarily the full truth." Instead, he said, opt for heat because it's been shown to help with the pain associated with soreness. Plus, he added, "Who doesn't want another excuse to sit on the couch with a heating blanket while watching Netflix after a tough workout?" He has a point.

Tedd Keating, Ph.D., associate professor of kinesiology at Manhattan College, had a different stance: ice, then heat. The general recommendation is ice first because, he said, "Its track record of being an analgesic [aka pain reliever] is definitely better than that for speeding the healing process from DOMS." (Note: Michael Fredericson, MD, professor and director of physical medicine and sports medicine at Stanford University, told POPSUGAR in a previous interview that icing within the first 24 hours after exercise may help with the pain.) Dr. Keating said that heat, then, can be used after the first 72 hours (some research states that heat makes initial inflammation from any injury worse). He emphasized, though, that there are studies that support both ice and heat to "hasten recovery slightly," but there's no "surefire cure once soreness has set in."

What Are Other Ways to Help With Sore Muscles?

While there is no proven cure, light exercise might help, but you don't want to overdo it. Dr. Keating said you should expect mild soreness during the first workout you do on sore muscles. But your body will adjust to an exercise that made you sore the more you do it, something called "repeated bout effect," which he explained is probably your best bet for helping with soreness (he also discusses this here, and Dutton mentioned this as well). Dr. Keating does recommend if your legs are sore, for instance, that you work a different muscle group like your arms the next day. That's because rest is also important: "Strategic rest is one way to avoid overtraining, as is incorporating variety into your program so that no one muscle group gets overstressed."

Some other not-so-known healing methods? Dutton said curcumin, the active ingredient in turmeric, "has been shown to have some moderate impact on improving soreness." Dr. Keating added that limited research points to tart cherry juice and wearing compression garments as potentially helpful for easing workout-induced muscle soreness to some degree.

Dr. Keating has an overall message for you, though: "This is a perfect case where an ounce of prevention is truly a pound of cure. Ease into workout routines gradually. Remember, big changes are one of the causes [of DOMS]. Be especially cautious when adding or turning up exercises with a strong eccentric component." Prime examples, Dr. Keating said, are lunges, squats, and variations of deadlifts. For more recovery tips, check out some of our past articles on DOMS, and keep up the (safe) good work!

These Are the 6 Best CrossFit Exercises For Beginners, According to CrossFit Coaches

CrossFit, a high-intensity style of training that mixes gymnastics, Olympic weightlifting, rowing, and running together, has become one of the most popular workouts over the years. As popular as it is, couch to CrossFit probably isn't the best idea due to how complex the workouts are.

To get you more familiar with the movements you'll see in WODs (workout of the day), POPSUGAR tapped four CrossFit coaches to find out the exercises every CrossFit beginner should know. The ahead moves are strengthening, they'll help you build muscle, and they'll also give you a confidence boost when you hit the box (what the gyms in CrossFit are called). This is not a CrossFit workout, so don't do all of these moves at once. Instead, begin to implement these exercises into your workouts and begin to progress them as you become more comfortable with the movements.

If you're a CrossFit rookie, these are the six exercises coaches want you to learn.

I'm the Only Married One in My Friend Group, and Honestly, It Does Feel Weird

Let me preface this by saying that I have never once regretted getting married at 26. I have no question that I've found "the one," and I certainly don't have any wild oats left to sow. Since getting married six months ago, my life has barely changed at all, especially since my now-husband and I had already been living together for over two-and-a-half years by the time we tied the knot. But one thing has become obvious from time to time: I'm now a married woman, and I'm the only one in my friend group who can claim that.

If you had asked me five years ago what I would look like as a married woman, I certainly wouldn't have pictured myself still wearing dirty Converse and a ponytail every day - perhaps instead a twin-set and some pearl earrings - but here I am. Being married doesn't mean I still can't go to bars and clubs and drink and dance and meet new people, but having a wedding band on your finger does change certain things. Most of my friends are single, and though I'm always happy to play wing woman, I have no desire to give the wrong impression. I don't wear what I used to consider "club outfits" anymore, and I'm definitely calmer in general whenever we're all out together. And all of that makes me happier. I'm inextricably bound to someone else now, and I do want others to recognize that.

Even my friends who are in committed relationships will sometimes make comments about not yet being ready to "settle down," and I feel a sting of shame.

Weekend trips feel different now, too. My single friends don't have a partner they feel obligated (or simply want!) to bring along, so to ask to bring my husband feels a little embarrassing sometimes, like trying to sneak a childhood blanket into a sleepover party. It's not that I can't have fun without him there (he's definitely not allowed on girls-only trips), but his desire to be welcomed into my friend group only makes me feel guiltier for saying maybe he should sit this one out. If all of my friends had partners, it would be different. To be the only one who brings a spouse along, however, is decidedly uncool.

I was never the one in a relationship in high school or college. When my friends would ditch plans or spend nights in with their significant others, I would roll my eyes. Now the tables have turned, and I have a husband who I cook dinner with every night. We have a dog. We have a shared bank account. He's the best friend I've ever had and every morning when I wake up next to him, I feel deliriously happy all over again, remembering just how lucky I am.

But that's not what single people want to hear. Even my friends who are in committed relationships will sometimes make comments about not yet being ready to "settle down," and I feel a sting of shame. I certainly haven't "settled" in my relationship, but being in a marriage does keep me grounded in some ways. Unlike my friends, I can't book a flight to Napa Valley last minute for a three-day weekend. The dog would need someone to watch him. The cost would need to be discussed with my husband. And my husband would need to be OK with me taking off for three days. It's not just me I need to consider anymore, and I genuinely love that.

Being the first one married rather than the last one definitely has its benefits, too. All of my friends could attend my bachelorette party, and not many of them needed plus-ones for my wedding. I can watch my friends swipe through dating apps, knowing I'll thankfully never have to go on another awkward first date ever again. I feel more comfortable and confident in myself than I ever have, not because I have the security of a man waiting for me every day, but because I'm in a partnership that makes me want to be better.

While most of my husband's friends are in serious relationships or on the cusp of marriage, not many of my friends are there yet, and that's OK. To a lot of people, I got married "young." I'm a firm believer that there's no right timeline for anything, and marriage is also definitely not for everyone. However, I'm still looking forward to the day when my husband will be invited on certain trips with my girl gang rather than feeling like a weird male interloper.

We Guarantee That You Will Find This Sunrise Beach Wedding Absolutely Mer-mazing!

A golden beach venue, gorgeous floral details, elegant shell-shaped table decor - what more could a mermaid want when she is marrying her dream partner? This stunning beach-side wedding, which took place at the Mallard Island Yacht Club in Manahawkin, NJ, alongside Barnegat Bay, was the creation of ever-so-talented photographer Delaney Dobson and took over a year to plan!

All of the time and hard work clearly paid off, because this fairy-tale wedding shoot is breathtaking, and the photos showcase Delaney's artistic abilities. "Delaney chose to shoot a large portion of these photos on Fuji 400 film and had them processed at Photo Vision," Event Planner Jeanne Coon-Bogath said. "The end result is really stunning, and (in my opinion) a whole lot of fun!"

The bride looked simply phenomenal in a purple gown and later changed into an actual mermaid outfit for this themed shoot. Her hair was braided with a silver crown that features starfish and flowers that matched her glistening scales. She had some help from the groom, who carried her, bridal-style, into the water for her closeup shots.

Overall, this mermaid-themed wedding shoot took a lot of planning and effort that was totally worth it. So if you want to add some of that mermaid magic into your own wedding, then make sure to check out this spectacular shoot ahead!

This styled shoot took place at The Village Well, which is an Irish pub in Cambridge, Ontario, and is the perfect backdrop for their unique theme.

The wedding included so many thoughtful details, including gorgeous hand-painted invitations that featured the vibrant green marijuana leaf, green marijuana leaves decorating the gorgeous three-tier cake, and a large green sign that spelled out "LOVE," along with other greenery in the decor. There were an array of sweet treats like macarons, sugar cookies, eclairs, and brownies that all incorporated green frosting or decorations. And there were even green-colored beverages in elegant wine glasses and coasters that read "Green is the new black."

There's a Floating Taco Bar in the Caribbean, So Excuse Us While We Fly There and Never Come Back

The Caribbean's first-ever floating taco and cocktail bar, Lime Out, recently opened in St. John, and it's the whole reason the US Virgin Islands just landed the top spot on our bucket list. The new eatery that floats 200 feet off Hansen Bay Beach can only be reached by kayak, paddle board, or a power boat. There's even a drive-through-style service for boats passing by and a sea-level wooden bar with submerged bar stools for those looking to stay a while.

"The East end of St. John is amazing, pristine, and untouched, and we're trying to honor that by inviting people to enjoy all of its beauty and having really delicious tacos and cocktails while doing it," Chelsea Baranowski told POPSUGAR. Baranowski owns Lime Out and built the bar with her husband, Richard.

Lime Out's head chef, Amaro Rivera, only uses the freshest ingredients for the tacos, which he designed himself. The menu includes 11 specially crafted tacos, including fresh-catch ceviche, surf and turf, rum ribs, shrimp, green curry chicken, and more. Their goal is to source everything locally to ensure the best quality products, and according to Baranowski, there are already plans to expand the menu.

If tacos aren't really your thing, the floating bar's craft cocktails are sure to get your attention. All cocktails are made with freshly squeezed juice and embrace the tropical vibes. For example, "The Danger" cocktail is mixed with fresh watermelon juice, lime juice, Thai chili-infused tequila, and pineapple. "This concept has been my husband Richard's dream for over two-and-a-half years," she continued. "He's been drawing it in the sand and designing it for [a long time]. The Virgin Islands need more options for locals and visitors who are seeking a totally different dining experience, so this is our version of [that]."

Better yet, the bar is eco-friendly, using recyclable cups, no straws, and biodegradable taco containers. Since being environmentally conscious is a priority, the team also does a regular check under the boat to clean up anything that may have dropped. To see more of this Caribbean heaven floating in the middle of the sea, keep reading.

A First-Time Gorilla Mom Won't Stop Holding and Smiling at Her Baby, and the Photos Are Truly Tender

If you were to tell me that seeing photos of a first-time mama gorilla cuddling her newborn baby at a zoo would make my heart ache, I'd shake my head at you. I'd tell you it's cute, but that would be it for me.

But after seeing these photos of critically endangered western lowland gorilla Kafi holding her new baby and smiling, I think I'm a different person. According to the Dublin Zoo, Kafi delivered her first baby on April 1, and she is so enamored with her little one that she hasn't let her go. "To date, keepers at Dublin Zoo have been unable to determine the gender of the infant as Kafi has been keeping the baby close to her chest since the birth," the zoo's website said.

Helen Clarke-Bennett, team leader of the African Plains at Dublin Zoo, also commented that what Kafi is doing is wonderful for the baby. "Kafi is doing a fantastic job so far as a first-time mother, keeping the young baby physically close in these crucial early stages." And dad Bangui is doing a great job, too. "Bangui is proving to be an attentive father and at night has been sleeping close to Kafi and the baby."

Scroll through to see the photos of the new mama fawning over her little one, and try not to completely lose it in the process.

This Smoothie Bowl Is Basically a More Blended Dole Whip, So That's All We Need to Know

Dole is brightening up the freezer aisle. The food company recently announced new Spoonable Smoothies, one of which is basically a blended version of the beloved Dole Whip! Available for $4 each, the two flavor options as of right now are pineapple banana and strawberry banana, and both smoothie bowls come in at under 200 calories.

So what'll each one get you? The Dole Whip Spoonable Smoothies Pineapple Banana tastes like pineapple soft serve, and it's topped with coconut shavings, honey-oat granola, and actual pineapple. Meanwhile, the Dole Spoonable Smoothies Strawberry Banana is topped with toasted granola and strawberry pieces. The bowls are meant to be eaten after they've thawed out on the counter for 35-40 minutes, or in the microwave for 30 seconds.

It should come as no surprise that social media and the acai bowl trend inspired the new release. In a press statement, Dole director of marketing, Frozen, Erin Fasano said, "What began as a trend with açai bowls has translated into a broader smoothie bowl trend. We're seeing them pop up all over Instagram and Pinterest as consumers hunt for a delicious new take on fruit for breakfast." Get a closer look at the Spoonable Smoothies ahead before you start spotting them in grocery stores this Spring.
