What's Better: "Leg Days" and "Arm Days" or Full-Body Workouts? These Experts Have the Answer

It's hard not to love a good full-body workout, but you might also hear about "leg days" and "arm days," workouts that focus on certain muscle groups. Those are called split workouts, because you "split" up your weekly workout routine to dedicate an entire day to each muscle group. If you're trying to build muscle, both are effective as long as you're doing resistance training a few times a week, eating plenty of protein, and increasing your weight as you get stronger.

More on all of that later. Figuring out which is more effective, full-body or split workouts, is the first question you want answered.

Full-Body Workouts vs. Split Workouts

Full-body workouts are the best choice for most people, said exercise physiologist Tom Holland, MS, who's also a fitness adviser for Bowflex. The major reasoning behind that? Time efficiency. You won't have to work out as often if you do full-body workouts, Tom told POPSUGAR. "When time is the number one reason people give for not exercising, this is the best approach," he explained. "For the vast majority of people, whose primary goals are to increase their functional strength, fix muscular weakness and imbalances, and build lean muscle, full-body workouts make the most sense," Tom said.

Another positive, according to Jeff Monaco, MS, CSCS, fitness education manager at Gold's Gym: full-body workouts often use a lot of compound movements, which are exercises that combine one or two moves to work multiple muscle groups. Think: squat to overhead press or plank with row. This trains your muscles to work together instead of in isolation, he told POPSUGAR, which helps you with functional fitness in your day-to-day life. Plus, he said, it burns more calories than just working one muscle group at a time.

There's also one important factor in building muscle, Tom told POPSUGAR, which is "the number of times per week that you work the same muscle groups." Ideally, that would be two to three times per week for each muscle group. It's another reason full-body workouts are a good choice: you're trying to build muscle in the fewest amount of workouts per week.

Split workouts are best for the more advanced, Tom said - that is, "those who plan on lifting weights almost every day per week, and sometimes twice daily." Jeff added that they're also great if you're looking to build up one muscle group or correct muscle imbalances. Still, he agreed, "Split workouts require more time and days in the gym to get the same benefit as the full-body workout. This generally means anywhere from four to six days per week in the gym." Not in the cards for you? (Me neither.) Then you'll likely see the best results from your full-body routines.

Eat Protein and Rest to Build Muscle

Of course, if muscle-building is your goal, a few other factors come into play. "You must ensure that you're getting in adequate amounts of daily protein," Tom said. Registered dietitian and ACSM-certified Jim White told POPSUGAR in a previous interview that a muscle-building diet should be about 25 percent protein, so try to ensure that a quarter of your plate at every meal (and snack) is devoted to protein sources like lean meat, fish, or tofu. To build muscle, Jim said your other macros should be 55 percent carbs and 20 percent fat.

Rest and recovery are also crucial, Jeff told POPSUGAR. "The body has to have enough rest and recovery to adapt to the stress that is put on it during a workout," he explained. He recommended waiting 48 hours between strength-training workouts if you're a beginner, and more if your muscles are sore. "You'll do more good letting those muscles rest another day than putting them through another tough workout when they're still recovering from the previous workout," he said.

How Often Should I Do Full-Body Workouts?

For beginners, Jeff recommended starting with two full-body strength workouts per week and gradually working up to three. "It's always advisable to start slow and gradually increase the amount of exercises, sets, and repetitions in a given workout over time so the body can adapt properly," he told POPSUGAR. That means you should do them on nonconsecutive days, Tom said, and keep them to around half an hour in length. On your non-strength-training days, get in some steady-state cardio like running, swimming, or cycling. You could also throw in one or two HIIT workouts, but avoid doing more than that, as HIIT can be particularly draining on your body and muscles. To get that essential balance, check out this four-week workout plan that'll help you build muscle and lose weight.

As you get stronger, it's essential that you keep bumping up your weight to continue building your muscles and avoid a strength-training plateau. You can start with bodyweight routines like this 20-minute full-body workout, including simple but effective moves like push-ups and squats. Then, gradually incorporate resistance through machines or dumbbells. Pick weights that are challenging you through your last few reps without losing form, Tom said. "When the last few repetitions become easy, it's time to increase the weight." Just starting? We've got you covered with this guide on choosing the right weight.

That might seem like a lot to keep in mind, so we'll make it a little simpler: unless you plan on lifting weights every day, go with full-body workouts. Make sure your diet has protein aplenty to fuel your workouts and help your muscles grow. Gradually increase the weight in your strength workouts with progressive overload, and do your best to strength train two or three times a week.

Now is the fun part: picking out your new, full-body routines. We've got lots: try this 30-minute weightlifting workout that's perfect for beginners; pump up your heart rate with this strength-building, HIIT-style video; or grab a pair of dumbbells for this fast and effective muscle-building routine. Let's get that burn on.

19 of TV's Most Inspirational Female Friendships

These days, it is beautifully common to see a big band of powerful, influential women marching together and preaching feminism. There is still a weird paradigm, however, in terms of what an "aspirational female friendship" should look like. On the one hand, there is the polished, Instagram-ready friendship we see presented by stars like Taylor Swift. But however pure the friendship behind those alliances may be, they still have an undeniable brand value that makes them feel sort of manufactured. #Squadgoals definitely had its moment, but it tends to apply to long-legged, dressed-to-the-nines snapshots of girlfriends more so than Gloria Steinem giving Ruth Bader Ginsburg a high-five.

No one has a monopoly on feminism, but for all the talk of this being a new heyday for women's representation in the media, it's kind of a bummer to see a commodified, watered-down version of the movement presented as pop culture's mainstream. And yet, I am hopeful, because TV is really and truly in a new Golden Age, and this one features a whole lot more women - in front of and behind the camera.

For the first time in my adult life, I don't have to search desperately for a show that passes the Bechdel test. Not only can I see my and my friends' experiences represented on television more consistently, but I can find multiple examples of female friendships the I actually do aspire to have. Too often, the image of celebrity friendship doesn't give us much to aim for beyond an outward appearance of glamour and social clout, but with television, we can dive into the good, the bad, and even the mundane of what it means to be lady friends. With that, let's take a look at the shows that are changing the way female friendship is represented on TV!

Eleven Risks It All in the Dramatic Final Trailer For Stranger Things Season 3

It's the summer of 1985, and the kids of Hawkins, IN, are more grown up than we've ever seen them - but they've still got unfinished business to handle. The long-awaited trailer for the third season of Stranger Things finally arrived on March 20, and it looks like we're going from the Upside Down to the pinnacles of adolescence: the local mall and neighborhood pool. The trailer gave us our first real look at the Starcourt Mall since the teaser dropped, and from what we see, it looks like not everyone in the town is excited about it and some are protesting its opening.

The new trailer, which is billed as the final look at season three before it premieres in July, pretty much confirms that Billy will be an unwitting host for the Upside Down's ultimate evil. In fact, we seem to hear the voice of the monster as "he" addresses Eleven: "You let us in . . . and now . . . you are going to have to let us stay." Chills.

In addition to that truly horrifying prospect, we get a peek at what Mike, Will, Eleven, and the rest of the gang have been up to since we last saw them escaping the Upside Down, as well as our favorite parents, Hopper and Joyce. Meanwhile, Nancy and Jonathan are working at The Hawkins Post (still trying to get the story out there?), and Steve and his new coworker Robin are languishing at the Summer job at the mall. And, of course, there's the seriously freaky new monster.

Oh, the teen drama of it all. Check out the latest trailer above before the new eight-episode season debuts on July 4!

Jessica Jones: What You Should Know About Terrifying Season 3 Villain Gregory Salinger

Spoilers for Jessica Jones season three below, FYI!

Prepare yourself, because the third and final season of Jessica Jones will leave you with a ton of highly important questions just a few episodes in. Like, why do hot, charming strangers never offer to make me hamburgers in bars? Why can't we all have a friend like Gillian? And was the budget for season three so low that Trish's vigilante "disguise" really had to be a bedazzled beanie from Forever 21 and a lame scarf? Of course, in all seriousness, we also need to discuss season three's incredibly dangerous new villain, Gregory Salinger.

We're first introduced to the character, played by Russian Doll's Jeremy Bobb, when he stabs Jessica in the abdomen outside of her apartment and escapes as she bleeds out in the hall. We later learn that Gregory was initially after Jessica's hookup, Erik (The Choice's Benjamin Walker), who was blackmailing Gregory because he'd deduced he was a killer of some kind (Erik's power is that he can sense if someone has done evil things just by being near them).

As Jessica soon comes to discover, though Greg Salinger is a normal human man, he's an extremely formidable foe. He also makes an appearance in some Marvel comics, though he and his TV counterpart are quite different. Let's break down who he is and why he's the perfect foe for Jessica.

Who Is Gregory Salinger in Jessica Jones?

In the TV series, not only is Greg hyperintelligent (he has medical and law degrees all over his apartment walls), but he's also extremely vengeful. He deems all superheroes "cheaters" and "frauds" who have never had to work for their success. Jessica in particular rubs him the wrong way, since she's an abrasive, unapologetic alcoholic, but more importantly, because she's a woman whose strength clearly threatens and terrifies him. "You were given every advantage," he tells Erik at one point after kidnapping him. "[You were] allowed to make mistake after mistake." He also chides Jessica for having "no discipline, just brute force."

"Salinger is a deeply scarred individual, and he just, by coincidence, crosses paths with Jessica," series creator and showrunner Melissa Rosenberg explained to Entertainment Weekly of Salinger's motivations. "For him, everything about her offends him, [specifically] the fact that she's got these powers not through hard work but through some other means . . . This is someone who has worked very hard himself. But he's a very twisted dude."

So, Greg Doesn't Have Any Superpowers?

Nope, he's just a regular - albeit highly trained and psychotic - dude. He has a special gun in the comics (which you'll read about ahead), but it's nowhere to be seen in the show.

Who Is Greg Salinger in the Comics?

In Marvel comics, Greg appears as a mercenary who is more commonly known as Foolkiller, but he's not the only one - three characters in the comics use that code name, including Salinger, Ross G. Everbest, and Kurt Gerhardt. Everbest, a religious fanatic of sorts, was the first, who was notable for his choice in weapon: a "purification" ray gun that disintegrated his victims. Next up was Salinger, who took over the mantle after he got out of prison and acquired Everbest's gun, which helped him carry out his mission of executing criminals. Salinger was more of a Punisher-like figure rather than a straight-up villain, gruesomely murdering only those who broke the law. He actually joined the Defenders for a time, before deciding they were too soft and destroying their headquarters. He later went on a killing spree and was institutionalized for his crimes.

Salinger mentored and passed on the mantle of Foolkiller to Kurt Gerhardt, a fellow criminal. Gerhardt took things too far, killing not only criminals but also celebrities and industrialists, before ending up locked in the Raft. With Gerhardt out of commission, Deadpool recruits Salinger to resume his Foolkiller persona on the Mercs for Money team. Salinger agrees and even earns a degree in Psychiatry so he can be Deadpool's therapist. S.H.I.E.L.D. also hired him to help counsel violent criminals, but it didn't take long before Salinger began wantonly killing those he saw as unable to be rehabilitated.

Does Greg Salinger Fight Jessica Jones in the Comics?

The short answer is no, the two never cross paths. However, he does fight Hellcat, since she's a member of the Defenders at that time (along with Doctor Strange, the Hulk, Valkyrie, and Nighthawk). As you know Hellcat is the alias of Trish Walker, who now has powers in the TV series. Without giving too much away, Trish and Salinger have a very violent interaction in the back half of the season that leaves both sides of the fight deeply scarred (though not necessarily physically).

Is There Any Way Jessica Can Defeat Greg Salinger?

As we see in season three, Greg is just as difficult to put away as Kilgrave but for very different reasons. This time around, Jessica has trouble proving that he's a serial killer in the eyes of the law, even with a train car full of body parts and a rescued kidnap victim; he might not be super, but he is thorough, and absolutely ruthless. If she can somehow turn his intellect against him, similar to a storyline in the comics that sees him about to use the purification ray gun on himself following a fight with Spider-Man, that might be the only way to get rid of him without destroying her own life in the process.

Much like previous installments of the franchise, Toy Story 4 has both a mid-credits scene and a postcredits scene, giving fans a double dose of fun after the film concludes. Both sequences take place after the film's sweet (yet still heartbreaking) ending and expand a bit on the world as we've left it.

He says goodbye to Buzz, Jessie, and the rest of the gang, and decides to stay with the traveling carnival alongside Bo Peep and the other free toys.

It's a bit of a bittersweet ending with Woody saying goodbye to everything he's ever known to embark on a whole new adventure with the love he lost, but it's still a hopeful one. Forky is safely returned to Bonnie and gets ready to live a life not destined for trash, with all the other toys. The MTV Movie & TV Awards Red Carpet Is Here to Brighten Your Monday

The stars at the MTV Movie and TV Awards were clearly all competing for the spotlight. The event went down in Santa Monica on Saturday night, but with the broadcast set for two days later, we couldn't help but obsess over the arrival looks from before the show. Lizzo wore a lime-green ruched midi dress and embellished chunky sneakers. Kiernan Shipka was covered in the Fendi monogram. Haley Lu Richardson wore just about the hottest Prabal Gurung crop top set we could imagine on a warm Summer's day. And Storm Reid? She boldly settled on an intricate velvet minidress by Etro.

We're particularly excited by the number of make-you-look pantsuits the women wore, although Daniel Levy from Schitt's Creek gave the ladies a run for their money in electrifying pink Alexander McQueen. And those who chose dresses definitely didn't choose simply. Seriously, you're going to be astonished by all the sequins, latex, and glitter going on here. If it's not enough to inspire your wardrobe for the rest of the week, maybe scroll back to the beginning and start over, because there's simply no denying how the burst of color from this red carpet lights up your life. Thank you, award season.

Exclusive: Aubrey Plaza Refuses to Believe in the Evil of Chucky in This Child's Play Clip

Are you ready to witness the kind of pure, creepy evil that only Chucky can deliver? While we certainly are, there's one person who isn't: Aubrey Plaza. Er, at least her Child's Play character, Karen Barclay, isn't, as you can see in our exclusive clip from the upcoming horror film, above.

In the brief clip from the Child's Play reboot, single mother Karen listens to her son Andy (Gabriel Bateman) attempt to fill her in on all the horrifying things he's witnessed his new doll do. Unfortunately Andy's tearful message isn't received, and Karen brushes off his concerns. Will Andy be able to save his mother?

The new edition of the chilling story is a contemporary reimagining of the 1988 horror classic, which sees Karen unknowingly gifting Andy with a Buddi doll that has a far more sinister nature than anyone realizes. Setting the film in the current day also means that Chucky has a deeply terrifying advantage this time around: he's equipped with WiFi. Yikes. Watch our exclusive clip from Child's Play above before it sneaks into theaters on June 21!

29 Ways to Show Off Your Tattoo in a Swimsuit and Bring in All the Insta Likes

Tons of people get tattoos that are meant to be hidden, and we get that. But it's also pretty common to come across a fashion girl with a penchant for styling her outfits around a tattoo. I used to be quiet about my tattoos in the Summer months, not minding if someone noticed them while I was swimming, but I never shouted about them from the rooftop. But then I got my hands on a few cheeky bikinis, and suddenly, my butt tattoo was on full display. I found that I really didn't mind. It was almost like another accessory I got to wear while I was at the beach. Why not be proud of my body art?

Whether you have scripture on your forearm, a hip tattoo like Kylie Jenner and Hailey Baldwin, who cemented their BFF status with the beauty move, or a drawing near your ankle, we're offering advice for showing them off in a swimsuit this Summer. It's not just about the pose, but the style of swimwear you choose, and it's safe to say you're going to want to read up on both before picking up another two-piece - or hitting up your tattoo artist. After all, we know you're in the market for some double taps. Who isn't?

A Royal Showdown! Who Would You Rather: Prince Carl Philip or Prince Harry?

As much as I enjoy swooning over every Prince Harry appearance, he isn't the only royal I'm lusting after. I've also had my eye on Prince Carl Philip from Sweden for quite some time now, but if it came down to choosing between the two princes (in my dreams), I don't know who I'd pick! Both Harry and Carl are extremely good-looking and truly care about making the world a better place, so there's really no right or wrong choice. So I guess I'll let you decide: Who would you rather?

This 17-Year-Old Girl Is Playing Maria in the West Side Story Remake, and DAMN, Her Voice!

Steven Spielberg's remake of West Side Story will feature some powerhouse cast members like Rita Moreno and Ansel Elgort, but Hollywood newcomer Rachel Zegler is taking on perhaps the film's most important role. The 17-year-old high school student will be the film's leading lady, Maria, opposite Elgort's Tony. You'll understand how she nabbed the exciting role after a quick listen to her breathtaking voice.

"I am so thrilled to be playing the iconic role of Maria alongside this amazing cast," Zegler said in a statement in January. "West Side Story was the first musical I encountered with a Latina lead character. As a Colombian-American, I am humbled by the opportunity to play a role that means so much to the Hispanic community."

In a sea of 30,000 submissions, Zegler participated in an online casting call and sent in videos of herself singing "Tonight" and "Me Siento Hermosa/I Feel Pretty" from the movie-musical. While fans haven't gotten a chance to hear these specific versions, Zegler does have a YouTube channel full of incredible covers, including a few of our favorites from the A Star Is Born soundtrack. Prepare yourself to be wowed by her vocal talents, and check out the videos of her singing ahead.

I Got My Teeth Professionally Whitened and Missed Coffee Desperately - but It Was Worth It

As a connoisseur of both coffee and red wine - OK, not connoisseur, but enthusiast - I'm always on a quest for a whiter smile. Even when I use white strips or an at-home gel whitening kit, within weeks, I inevitably smile to reveal duller, less vibrant teeth. It is a huge bummer and makes me pretty self-conscious in photos, hence why I don't have many photos of myself smiling (and I never take selfies).

Luckily, the talented team at Jonathan B. Levine and Associates aesthetic dentistry on New York's Upper East Side came to the rescue. Among their dozens of services is teeth whitening. The teeth whitening is done with GLO Science, a whitening service that Levine himself innovated. It's performed by one of their skilled dental hygienists, and you are in and out of the office within an hour. I was skeptical of how much it would help, but I walked out a believer. Here are the pros and cons of getting your teeth professionally whitened with GLO Science.

A Spinoff of Emma Stone's Easy A Movie Will Take Place at the Same High School

Blast from the past: Easy A is getting a spinoff movie! Entertainment Weekly announced the news on Thursday, confirming that Screen Gems, a Sony Pictures studio, has plans to work on the new film, which will take place at the same Ojai North High School in California as the original. The teen comedy from 2010 (Yes, nine years ago!) starred Emma Stone and catapulted her into the spotlight. It also included Penn Badgley, Amanda Bynes, Lisa Kudrow, Stanley Tucci, and Aly Michalka, but there's no word on who will be in the spinoff cast.

However, Easy A's screenwriter Bert Royal is set to write and direct the film, so it's in good hands. Stone, who played Olive Penderghast in the movie inspired by The Scarlet Letter, has since gone on to star in major motion pictures like The Favourite and La La Land. We're excited to find out who's cast in the new version almost a decade later.

If she can somehow turn his intellect against him, similar to a storyline in the comics that sees him about to use the purification ray gun on himself following a fight with Spider-Man, that might be the only way to get rid of him without destroying her own life in the process.
