CBD Seemed to Soothe My Sore Muscles, So I Asked a Doctor If There's Actually a Link

Muscle soreness has been part of my daily life for years and, as a result, I'm constantly on a mission to find ways to ease the pain. Some of my muscle pain can be attributed to lupus, but with those symptoms mostly under control for the past year, I experience aches at the times you'd expect, like after a workout, a long flight, or hours spent at my desk. A number of friends have told me they swear by CBD for pain relief - so I figured it couldn't hurt to give it a try.

What Happened When I Took CBD For 2 Weeks

I purchased CBD pills and tinctures that are specifically aimed at treating body pain and began taking CBD each day to see if I noticed a difference. Because I'm a night owl who typically works out in the evenings, I decided to stick to a consistent schedule - I planned to exercise at around the same time each day and take my CBD dose after I'd showered and settled in to read or watch TV.

I'm accustomed to waking up sore and, although this certainly didn't go away entirely, I did notice that my body ached less when I woke up the morning after a vigorous workout. That result was enough for me - as long as it doesn't interfere with my ability to go about my day, a tolerable level of soreness is to be expected after a workout.

About a week after I started taking CBD, my routine changed as I traveled from Seattle to New York City to surprise my best friend, whose boyfriend wanted her closest friends there to celebrate when he popped the question. I'm a travel writer who spends a great deal of time on planes, so I knew to expect muscle and body pain after my flight. At that point, I diverged from my routine and took one dose of CBD before boarding my redeye flight and another when I arrived in New York. When I flew home two days later, I did the same thing. Perhaps uncomfortable plane seats are to blame, but in this case, I really didn't think that CBD helped ease my muscle pain. It was fairly comparable to the pain I experienced a month prior when I flew home to Connecticut to visit my parents.

Less than 36 hours after returning from my friend's engagement party, it was time for a two-hour flight to California for work. During my four days in California, I didn't stick to my typical workout routine, but I was active - I took a six-hour bike tour of Sonoma and squeezed in a few brief workouts at my hotel's gym. The last time I rode a bike, my muscles were pretty sore afterwards. This time, I was significantly less sore and I suspected the CBD had something to do with it.

Is There Evidence That CBD Works For Muscle Pain?

After two weeks of using CBD to treat my sore muscles, I reached my own verdict: it's not a miracle worker, but it did ease some of the pain. Still, I sought the insight of a doctor to find out why CBD may have helped my sore muscles and if there's anything I should be aware of before I make it a permanent part of my routine. It turns out that most evidence is anecdotal - and although the doctor didn't advise against taking CBD, she did tell me to be mindful of exactly what I'm ingesting.

Claudia William, MD, a board-certified family medicine physician who specializes in cannabis, explained that studies are limited. "In my practice, I've heard anecdotal evidence from patients that CBD topical creams help for musculoskeletal pain, such as muscle strains, muscle tightness, or soreness," Dr. William told POPSUGAR. "In some instances where it doesn't completely relieve pain, it has helped decrease the amount of NSAIDs or oral pills people have had to take."

However, Dr. William noted that consumers should be cautious when purchasing CBD. She recommends carefully reading the ingredient list and only choosing products where third party testing information is available. One concern, for example: residual pesticides limits are set by the state, rather than at the federal level. So, while there's a seemingly endless supply of CBD products on the market, they're not all created equal.

And, although Dr. William said benefits have certainly been observed, she added that there's a gray area when it comes to available data - and patients and consumers who use CBD products should be conscious of this. "We may not be aware of possible long-term adverse effects due to limited research on the substance," she explained. So, when people like me use CBD products, there's a level of self-experimentation involved. Until policy changes in the United States, "research on [cannabis] will be limited or stalled," Dr. William said.

I'll probably continue to use CBD, but Dr. William's insight definitely made me realize that I need to closely examine the ingredient list and third party testing information of any product I use in the future. And, because so many people are using CBD to help with everything from body aches to anxiety, I hope the path for more research is cleared sooner rather than later.

The Little Beauty Habit That Makes All of My Vacations More Memorable

Who doesn't love going on vacation? And who doesn't hate forgetting what it felt like to be on vacation? I just got back from a week bopping around Austria, Germany, and Italy with my partner, so all the memories are vivid as a neon sign in my mind. But I want them to stay that way. Enter my go-to memory-making tip: finding a signature scent for every major getaway.

Whenever I'm about to leave on a trip, I go on a perfume reconnaissance mission. This might mean hitting up Sephora or Barneys to sniff out a few new scents and asking for a sample of something I love. (Don't be afraid to do this! They're usually happy to give you a generous one.) It might mean digging into the seemingly endless stash of fragrance samples I already have in my makeup drawer at home. The guidelines are simple. One, the perfume I choose should be one I don't regularly wear, so that it's inextricably linked to the memories I'm about to make while spritzed in it. Two, something about the smell should evoke some kind of feeling about the place I'm about to go and the kind of adventure I'm about to have.

Something about this ritual feels wildly glamorous, but it's also pretty nerdy and scientific. Study after study has shown that scents have remarkable power to evoke strong feelings. One working theory is that this might due to the fact that information we gather via our senses of sight and hearing doesn't pass through as many areas of the brain as information we perceive with our sense of smell, making scents even more emotionally vivid. But those of us who are immediately transported back to the halls of our middle school when we catch a whiff of CK One already knew that.

For this recent visit to Europe, I landed on AERIN Beauty's Mediterranean Honeysuckle, which is a warm, mildly sweet, energetic scent shot through with grapefruit. The fragrance was summery, romantic, and lively - exactly the vision I had for my trip. Now, every time I take a whiff of that tiny bottle, it will evoke images of languid boat rides and Bellinis in Venice and the way the mist from a waterfall in the Austrian alps felt dancing across my face. And also eating a pretzel the size of my laptop while drinking an entire liter of beer in Munich.

An added bonus to this memory-making habit of mine? A sample size of perfume is TSA-friendly and will easily last you for two to three weeks. And if you're taking a vacation longer than that? I can't help you and also don't want to because I'm jealous.

Say It Isn't So: Friends Is Officially Leaving Netflix in 2020

We all knew this day was coming, but that doesn't make it any easier. Like a giant pigeon crapping on our hearts, it was announced on Tuesday that Friends will officially be leaving Netflix to exclusively stream on WarnerMedia's new streaming service, HBO Max.

Back in December 2018, it was rumored that the '90s series would stop streaming on Jan. 1, 2019, but Netflix quickly stepped in to soothe worried subscribers. Netflix's Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos told The Hollywood Reporter that the show's "departure is a rumor," but the streaming giant confirmed later that the ensemble comedy "will remain on Netflix throughout 2019."

While an expiration date for Friends' availability on Netflix hasn't been revealed yet, THR revealed that HBO Max will officially launch in Spring 2020 with 10,000 hours of premium content, which means that all 236 episodes of the series will be among those. For now, we have to assume that the show will leave Netflix by January 2020 and be ready for HBO Max streamers in the Spring.

HBO Max will also include episodes of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and Pretty Little Liars, as well as serve as the exclusive streaming home for Warner Bros.-produced dramas for The CW beginning with the Fall 2019 season. That includes upcoming series like Batwoman and Riverdale spinoff Katy Keene.

So, if you're in mid-rewatch of all the awkward, ridiculously messy, yet somehow hilarious situations that Ross, Rachel, Chandler, Monica, Phoebe, and Joey get into, we suggest you savor these moments. Next year isn't too far ahead, and you'll definitely want to watch all 10 seasons of Friends before it disappears from your queue for good!

Megan Rapinoe Walked the ESPYs Red Carpet in Coach Leather Shorts, and Her Whole Look Is Goals

Following an incredible World Cup win for the USWNT, captain Megan Rapinoe swapped her soccer uniform on the ESPYs red carpet on July 10 for a classy, tailored black blazer with a plunging neckline and a matching pair of Coach leather shorts. OK, leather shorts aren't the first clothing item that comes to mind when I think of red carpet events, but Megan proved that the sporty look works for every occasion.

Megan's stylist, Karla Welch, accessorized the daring look with a pair of Louboutin oxford shoes and jewelry from Beladora and Anita Ko. Keeping it edgy yet sophisticated, Megan completed the outfit with a pair of bunched up socks to create a rockstar look that worked perfectly with her lavender pixie cut. See Megan's full look ahead, and check out what the rest of the USWNT wore when they accepted their ESPYs award for Best Team of 2019.

If You're on the Pill and You Regularly Take Melatonin, Read This Important Warning

Melatonin can help you fall asleep faster, but while doctors don't recommend long-term use for anyone, women who are on birth control pills should take extra precautions before getting in the habit of reaching for a supplement whenever insomnia strikes.

Savita Ginde, MD, vice president of medical affairs at Stride Community Health Center and former chief medical officer of Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains, explained that melatonin is naturally produced in the pineal gland, the same gland that regulates female hormone levels. "While there are no definitive studies, "one can propose that taking or adding external melatonin could impact natural cycles, whether it's natural sleep cycles or natural hormonal cycles, such as those that impact ovulation and menstrual cycles and thus affect fertility," Dr. Ginde told POPSUGAR.

Then there's the matter of where and how the body metabolizes melatonin. Heather Bartos, MD, a board-certified ob-gyn, told POPSUGAR that melatonin is metabolized in the liver along with a number of other medications, including birth control pills. "By asking the liver to do double duty, it can lower the effectiveness of the birth control pill," she explained. Dr. Bartos added that certain antibiotics, medications, and supplements can also interfere with the metabolization of birth control, including St. John's wort, an over-the-counter supplement that's commonly used to treat depression.

It's also important to note that melatonin may interfere with certain types of birth control pills - such as progestin-only pills or combination pills - more than others, though there hasn't been enough research conducted to determine exactly how and to what extent that's the case. For this reason, Dr. Bartos recommends erring on the side of caution if you regularly take melatonin. "I would switch to a LARC (long-active reversible contraceptive) such as an IUD," she said.

If you're taking melatonin more than "every so often," both Dr. Bartos and Dr. Ginde recommend talking to your doctor to ensure that you're protected from unwanted pregnancy and that your sleep issues are being adequately treated. "If sleep is an issue, don't self diagnose," Dr. Ginde said. "Talk with your physician about solutions, and if melatonin is part of that plan, you and your doctor can review if and how a particular dose will impact your specific type of birth control."

Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom Take a Break From Wedding Planning and Hit the Beach

Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom are squeezing in some Summer fun ahead of their wedding. The couple - who got engaged on Valentine's Day - are currently vacationing with family and friends in Ile de Ré, France. Over the weekend, the two hit up the beach, where they took a warm dip in the ocean and soaked up the sun. The 42-year-old actor went shirtless and showed off his muscular physique, while the 34-year-old singer kept things sexy in a floral one-piece.

Katy and Orlando have been dating on and off since 2016 and are expected to wed at the end of this year. Katy is reportedly "leaning away from wearing white," and the guest list may include former nemesis Taylor Swift. Given that they recently ended their years-long feud and Katy did appear in Taylor's "You Need to Calm Down" music video, we could definitely see Taylor getting an invite.
