Exclusive: Jillian Bell Learns the Cost of Fitness in This Scene From Brittany Runs a Marathon

Award-winning playwright Paul Downs Colaizzo will make his directorial debut with the Jillian Bell-led comedy Brittany Runs a Marathon. If you have already seen the trailer and are suitably intrigued by the uplifting premise, we have an incredibly relatable exclusive clip that will have you even more excited for the film's release.

Based on a true story, the film follows Bell as New Yorker Brittany Forgler, a party girl who's hilarious and outgoing but decidedly not healthy. When her doctor challenges her to lose 55 pounds, she initially balks at the idea but, with the help of her neighbor (Casual's Michaela Watkins), finds herself falling in love with running. Her newfound appreciation for the sport leads her to the point where she makes a goal of racing in the New York City Marathon. (Which is, like, hard.)

In the clip above, we see Brittany's attempt at joining a local gym to get her fitness on. It all seems to be going smoothly until she learns the cost of the gym's most basic monthly membership: a not-so-basic $129. Watch Brittany's very understandable reaction to the news ahead, and check out Brittany Runs a Marathon when it sprints into theaters on Aug. 23.

Why Bebe Rexha's Female-Forward Music Initiatives Should Have the Patriarchy Quaking

Image Source: Getty / Rich Fury

When it comes to advocating for gender equality in the music industry, Bebe Rexha is one of the kingpins for change. Not because others are just starting to speak more openly about representation in media, but because it's right, and it matters. Whether she's calling out predatory music producers or championing the celebration of female expression in songs, the 29-year-old "Last Hurrah" singer just wants all artists to have a fair shot at making it big - and if that means taking a bat to the patriarchy, then so be it.

One of the ways Rexha is making efforts for the cause is by teaming up with Bumble for its Empowered by Bumble Bizz program. The initiative will connect her, Kacey Musgraves, and Hayley Kiyoko each with an up-and-coming female artist who will then get to perform at a music festival in 2020. This holds meaningful value, as women continue to be underrepresented in the festival scene; in 2018, Pitchfork reported that women make up only 19 percent of the average lineup. Rexha is hoping to push for progress by encouraging her mentee, whom she'll choose from a pool of submissions.

"It's fun to work with new creatives because I remember all the people who have given me chances," Rexha told POPSUGAR over the phone on July 31. "Those people inspire you and give you the push to believe in yourself, which is the most important thing."

More than anything, Rexha wants to motivate her mentee to keep working toward her dreams, no matter what. "It's not going to be an easy journey, but it's not about being the most talented," she said. "It's about being the most persistent, the most driven, and being able to bounce back. You have to be resilient."

Rexha's partnership with Bumble should hardly come as a surprise, considering her previous endeavors to promote equality. In 2018, she started a pre-Grammys Women in Harmony luncheon for female artists to gather in unity and talk about their experiences in the industry. The idea came to her while she was in the studio with another female creative and felt power in their combined energy.

Image Source: Getty / Theo Wargo

The first brunch she hosted at Cecconi's restaurant in West Hollywood brought out around 40 attendees, including Charli XCX, JoJo, Sevyn Streeter, and Avril Lavigne. At the second annual get-together held at LA's Sunset Tower Hotel in February 2019, there were around 100 guests, including Brandi Carlile, Ashlee Simpson, Madison Beer, Nicole Scherzinger, and Sabrina Carpenter.

"There's an unspoken thing - a sense of competitiveness - that women have in the industry because there are more men in the business," Rexha said. "But if we stick together, we can create more room at the table, collaborate, and have more success together. It's invigorating." She is already planning next year's event and has a few artists in mind who she's hoping will perform (but that's top-secret information for now).

"Women are becoming more empowered, standing up for what they believe in, and supporting each other."

With continued support and a sedulous spirit, Rexha wants to restructure the foundation of music media to be more inclusive and less disparaging for women. "There's a stigma against women that they're very emotional; they're divas. And guys are bosses. But when girls are bosses, they're 'b*tches,'" she said. "Those stereotypes need to be broken." Thankfully, she sees the tides starting to turn. "Women are becoming more empowered, standing up for what they believe in, and supporting each other," she added. "You definitely feel it - not only in the music business, [but] overall."

And according to Rexha, gender equality goes beyond what you see on the surface. Representation among people working behind the scenes is just as important. "I'd love to see more female executives who are presidents of record labels, more women starting record labels, more female producers and engineers, and more women in positions of power," she said. "That's why I really want to start my own label and publishing company to help newer artists and songwriters. And that will happen at the right time."

Aw! Princess Eugenie Gave Away Princess Beatrice's Nickname in a Supersweet Birthday Post

Princess Charlotte might be known as "Lottie" around friends and family, but she's not the only royal with a cute nickname. Princess Eugenie, aka "Euge," wished her sister Princess Beatrice a happy 31st birthday in a heartfelt Instagram post on Thursday. Like any close sisters, she referred to Beatrice by her family nickname, which she revealed is "Beabea." So sweet!

"You have been bossing it since before I was born and continue to be the most wonderful person, friend, and big sister," Eugenie captioned the series of adorable throwback photos. "Happy Birthday to you Beabea!!" Even Queen Elizabeth herself goes by a few unexpected nicknames, so I wouldn't be surprised if Prince Harry and Prince William revealed their nicknames for each other next. Until then, happy (belated) birthday Princess Beabea!

I Went On a Silent Meditation Retreat, and It Was So Profound That I Can't Shut Up About It

When I signed up for a weeklong silent meditation retreat, I was looking forward to some peace and quiet, to deepening my meditation practice, and to having no choice but to unplug. When the first day actually arrived, I spent the six-hour train ride to the retreat center manically scrolling through Instagram-famous ferrets and art history memes like they were my very life-force. By the time I walked through the doors, the idea of spending seven days living in device-free, total silence with two dozen strangers felt unbearable.

And it felt unbearable quite a few more times throughout the week. But it was also life-changing. Largely in ways I'll be figuring out with my therapist for a long, long time, but also in more practical ways I didn't necessarily expect. In fact, I've incorporated some of what I learned into my life now that I'm home, which means I've become one of those insufferable people who tells others they should unplug, too. Here's how I've changed since coming back.

I'm Not Glued to My Phone All the Time

Yes, I know that blue light messes with your sleep. And that spending too much time on your phone stresses you out. And that browsing Instagram after midnight leads to cutting your own bangs with a pair of kitchen scissors 100 percent of the time. Still, mindless scrolling is a part of my nighttime routine and my morning commute, and it's usually what I default to during pockets of idle time when I don't know what else to do with my hands.

I wasn't cured of this in a week. In fact, there were plenty of times that my phone, tucked away in a bag in my room, felt like a phantom limb. But it also felt really, really nice to be away from it and to realize I didn't actually need it to fall asleep or entertain myself as much as I thought I did. I was already a fan of long, phone-free walks pre-retreat, but now I'm also making a point to resist the urge to pick up my phone during those smaller moments when I feel anxious or bored.

I'm More Mindful

The hours I spent on a cushion weren't my only meditative time during the retreat. I also meditated while doing my daily chore, cleaning one of the communal shower rooms. (By the end of the week, sponging down the shower curtains set my soul on fire.) I savored my daily walk up the long pebbled driveway to find the "good" rocks. Picking lint off my shirt became a treat. My lint-picking hobby doesn't thrill me in quite the same way now that I'm home, but I'm still finding a sort of calm joy in being in the moment and practicing mindfulness while cleaning my apartment, cooking, and watering my plants.

I'm Even Eating More Mindfully

Every meal I ate at the retreat, I ate with nothing more than some critters on the porch to entertain me. Did I come to believe that I shared a deep psychic connection with a chipmunk I named Gary? Of course. But over the week, I also realized that, in my real life, I never eat without something else to do. I'm always deep in conversation with friends, reading, or watching TV. Just eating felt really uncomfortable - and to be honest, boring - at first. But by the second day, I felt like I was paying attention to my hunger and fullness cues and even enjoying my food more. Am I now canceling dinners with friends to sit on my couch alone with reheated leftover pizza? No. But I am starting many mornings with my cat on my lap and a quiet, distraction-free cup of coffee and a piece of fruit.

I'm Kinder to Myself

Things can get loud when you get quiet. You know that voice in your head that seems to be there just to criticize you? You know, like when you're taking a workout class for the first time and you hear, "You're doing it wrong," with every squat, or when you're trying to fall asleep and your brain is all, "What if everyone secretly hates you?" and "Are you maybe dead inside?" Seven days of silence took my awareness of that voice - and the authority I give it - to a whole new level. I came to recognize it not as the voice of truth, but just an especially loud voice, like a shouty mansplainer in a work meeting who sure seems to be talking a lot, but doesn't actually know what the hell is going on.

Sure, I still sometimes fall asleep mentally scrolling through a highlight reel of every embarrassing thing I've ever done, like all normal people. But more and more often, I'm remembering that I don't have to go to battle with that voice every time I hear it. I can hear it with a bit of detached bemusement - and for now, that's plenty life-changing all on its own.

This Mask Combination Is My Secret to Smooth, Glowing Skin

The Summer humidity and heat have recently been doing a number on my complexion, causing me to break out more than usual. One night when it was particularly bad, I decided to treat my skin to some R and R by applying a few masks. I hadn't used the powerful T.L.C. Drunk Elephant Sukari Babyfacial ($80) in a while and thought that the 25 percent of AHA and 2 percent of BHA could bring some of the bumps in my skin to a head and smooth out the texture of my skin a bit.

I smeared the thick liquid on my skin, set my timer for the recommended 20 minutes, and watched some YouTube videos while my face tingled. After washing it off and gently patting my skin dry, I reached for the new moisturizing mask I brought home, the Sisley-Paris Velvet Sleeping Mask With Saffron Flowers ($140), in the hopes it would ease my skin. I rubbed the soothing cream, which contains honey and shea butter, into my face and headed to bed.

In the morning, I noticed my complexion looked clearer and more bouncy and wondered if my new regimen was to thanks. I started following Haley Lu Richardson on Instagram after her Edge of Seventeen performance in 2016, and I haven't regretted it for a single second since. The 24-year-old actress from Arizona has been making her mark on Hollywood for the past few years, but she most recently rose to stardom after she played Stella in Five Feet Apart opposite Cole Sprouse.

Haley's social media presence is equal parts seriously stunning selfies, couples pictures with her fiancé Brett Dier, and silly snaps that will leave you rolling on the floor laughing.

After a few more times of using the combination, I can confirm that this is the magic potion that has my face looking dewy, clear, and even. My skin looks so glowy, that I intend on keeping this in my weekly routine.
