What's a Chemical Exfoliant? A Dermatologist Breaks It Down

Walk into any Sephora, Ulta, or department or drugstore and you're likely to see hoards of bottles that list a chemical exfoliant as an active ingredient in their formula. Words like alpha hydroxy acid, lactic acid, and glycolic acid can sound intimidating if you're unfamiliar, but here's why you shouldn't be.

To help you decide whether to work them into your routine, we consulted board-certified dermatologist Dhaval Bhanusali, MD, to explain and demystify the common ingredients. Ahead, he breaks down everything you need to know about chemical exfoliators - including what they are and how they can transform your skin.

Lady and the Tramp's Classic Love Story Comes to Life in the First Live-Action Trailer

Disney's 2019 D23 Expo is spoiling us! Not only did the company drop a first look at the remake of Lady and the Tramp, but it also released the film's first trailer. It's a terribly romantic video that highlights the film's biggest stars, real-life shelter pups Rose and Monte, who play Lady and Tramp, respectively. It also gives us a first listen to the vocal talents of Tessa Thompson and Justin Theroux, who are voicing the two adorable pups who find love in a hopeless place (aka somewhere in the Midwest).

In addition to Thompson and Theroux, the star-studded cast includes Janelle Monáe as singing pound pup Peg and Thomas Mann and Kiersey Clemons as Lady's married owners. Check out the trailer above, and look out for Lady and the Tramp when it drops exclusively for streaming on Disney+ on Nov. 12.

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley Just Gave the Modern French Manicure a Cool New Twist

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley just posted a photo of a version of the french manicure you've probably never tried before. The model's latest Instagram post is a shot of her jewelry-adorned hand with what she called "The Reverse Frenchie" in her caption. The manicure combines the same colors you'd normally get with a traditional french manicure, but instead of having the white shade at her tips, it runs across the edges of her cuticles.

The french manicure - which was most popular in the early '00s - is being thrust back into the limelight now as one of this year's biggest nail trends, as celebrities like Khloé Kardashian, Hailey Baldwin, and Kylie Jenner have all been seen with it. Many of them are putting their 2019 spin on the look, combining it with trends that are popular today (like neon hues and negative space). Check out Huntington-Whiteley and other A-listers' modern takes on the french manicure ahead.

Gabrielle Union Caught Baby Kaavia Saying Her First Words on Video, So "Get Ready World!"

She speaks! Apart from being fashionable, constantly photo-ready, and a great swimmer, Gabrielle Union's daughter Kaavia James can also talk. The 9-month-old baby said her first words in a video Gabrielle shared to Instagram on Tuesday. "Kaavia James speaks!!!! Get ready world. Next stop, #agt judges table! Bye bye," Gabrielle captioned the sweet video of Kaavia sitting in her high chair and babbling.

Despite what sounds like pots and pans banging around in the background, the baby makes her little voice heard in Gabrielle's video. She not only says a clear "bye-bye," but she also gives us a pretty great "yeah," which counts as two phrases in my book. From the looks of it, Kaavia has also grown two front teeth already, so we can't wait to see what her next milestone will be. Something tells me she'll be an America's Got Talent judge before we know it!

Welp, Even Scott Patterson Wanted More From Luke and Lorelai's Wedding on Gilmore Girls

If Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life makes its way back to Netflix for a second season, Scott Patterson has only one special request for the new set of episodes: a wedding for Lorelai (Lauren Graham) and his character, Luke. The actor recently caught up with Us Weekly and spoke about why he thinks fans of the series deserve to see a big celebration taking place for the couple.

"Well, I'll tell you one thing, [there] better be a big, fat wedding," he said. "I think that's what we should give [fans] . . . I think now it's time to give them, after 20 years, what they want." After building up their romance throughout Gilmore Girls' entire seven-season run, Lorelai and Luke finally got married on the show's 2016 revival. The wedding, though, turned out to be a bit lackluster for some fans, as the couple ended up eloping in lieu of having a big celebration. Considering the amount of screen time their relationship got - with its many highs and lows - Patterson believes a memorable event is what fans deserve to see.

When asked about what Luke and Lorelai's wedding would ideally look like, the 60-year-old actor mentioned that it'd likely be "filled with drama, filled with laughs, filled with, you know, Miss Patty [forgetting] the dancers and then they [would have] to replace them with little children or dogs." He continued, "Something very cute and goes right to the heart. A community pulling together to make it all happen."

But of course, in order for that "big, fat" wedding to take place, Netflix would have to order more episodes of the reboot - and that hasn't happened yet. "If everybody can make the right deal, then it'll happen," Patterson said. "If everybody's available, then, you know, it could, it could happen . . . there's always hope."

Princess Diana's Most Captivating Moments With Kids

Princess Diana shared numerous sweet moments with her sons, Prince William and Prince Harry, before her death in August 1997, but she had just as many heartwarming encounters with kids during her royal appearances across the globe. As part of her extensive charity work, the royal, who was a kindergarten teacher before marrying Prince Charles, had no qualms cuddling up to young children as she visited hospitals, schools, and orphanages. She would even get down on their level as they offered her gifts or flowers, much like her daughter-in-law, Kate Middleton, does when she interacts with her smallest fans. Not only have William and Harry carried on Diana's legacy for helping others, but they also share her love for children.

Looking Back at Lady Gaga's Legendary Blood-Soaked VMAs Performance, 10 Years Later

Exactly ten years ago, Lady Gaga delivered one of the most memorable MTV Video Music Award performances of all time. The pop star was just 23, and had previously released her debut album, The Fame, which spawned runaway hits like "Just Dance" and "Poker Face." The public was already intrigued by her catchy, unusual music and even more unusual style, but the performance - her first ever at a major award show- would offer a chance to prove her (now indisputable) talent within a live setting.

Her big moment was also preceded by five famous words: "I'mma let you finish, but . . ."

It's true: the 2009 VMAs stage saw both Gaga declaring herself as one of the boldest auteurs of her time as well as the inception of Kanye West and Taylor Swift's high-profile feud, which - despite momentary truces - still rages on. And though Kanye's unexpected interruption undoubtedly became the headline for the award show, Gaga's performance still stood out as a testament to her showmanship.

Suddenly. . . blood appeared, and it became apparent that this would not be a conventional performance.

How'd she manage that? With a lot of choreography, white lace, and fake blood, that's how. The performance began with Gaga laying down, singing "Poker Face" in a setting that's not not reminiscent of The Phantom of the Opera. The music transitioned into "Paparazzi" as Gaga awakened to join her backup dancers. Her famous monster claw made an early appearance. Then suddenly, among the crystals on the right side of her chest, blood appeared, and it became apparent that this would not be a conventional performance.

The energy onstage gradually became more frantic. A walking stick was thrust into Gaga's hand as she charged toward the front of the stage. The camera panned to Sean "Diddy" Combs who looked amazed, stunned, and perhaps not entirely sure how to feel about what he was witnessing. After a brief piano solo, more blood started pouring down Gaga's body. The audience cheered as Gaga, nearly in tears, sang, "I'm your biggest fan / I'll follow you until you love me." Gaga was carried off and then reappeared floating above her dancers in a harness. She dropped the microphone and stared into the distance to the sound of camera shutters. In the context of the performance, viewers just witnessed her death. In real life, it was the birth of an icon.

Gaga went on to win the award for best new artist that night, while the "Paparazzi" video also earned her awards for best special effects and best art direction. In a strange twist, Gaga was scheduled to co-headline a tour with Kanye just two months later in November. The Fame Kills tour was subsequently canceled because Kanye decided to step away from the public eye, and Gaga instead embarked on her own Monster Ball Tour.

The three aforementioned stars still orbit each other and the award show, for that matter: Taylor is opening this year's VMAs with a song off her new album Lover. But what happened at the VMAs a decade ago is still something to pause at because Gaga's breakout moment - a grotesque exhibition that forced the public to grapple with its obsession with celebrity - was overshadowed by one celebrity interrupting another celebrity's acceptance speech. (There was of course more to it than that, but, you get it.)

Gaga performed at the VMAs again in 2011 and then in 2013, but truthfully, neither performance came close to her electrifying debut. It was a once-in-a-lifetime kind of performance, one that offered insight into what was to come. It practically goes without saying, but her career has since skyrocketed. She's experimented with genre, performed at the Super Bowl, and even won an Oscar. Who could have foreseen all that? Some who witnessed the performance in real time might have.

Brace Yourselves, Outlander Fans: Season 5 Is Coming Early Next Year

Fans of Diana Gabaldon's time-traveling adventure book series brought to life on the small screen are accustomed to having Outlander premiere in the Fall - three of its first four seasons premiered between August and November. Unfortunately, that is not the case with the upcoming fifth season, which we can expect in 2020.

At the 2019 Television Critics Association Summer press tour, Starz's Chief Operating Officer Jeffrey Hirsch gave Outlander some long-awaited news about the season five premiere.

"Finally, to calm social media down, we will bring the end of 'Droughtlander.' The highly anticipated return of the epic and acclaimed series Outlander will debut its fifth season early next year," says Hirsch, to groans heard 'round the world.

That's right - we are still months away, fans. If we had to guess, we would wager Starz will debut season five on Sunday, Jan. 5, 2020. The reason we think it'll be that soon after the holidays is that Outlander seasons are 13 episodes long (after the first season, which ran 16 episodes). If they start on Jan. 5, 13 episodes will take the show through the end of March, and then American Gods can premiere in the first part of April. There's always a chance that Starz will hold Outlander until Jan. 12 or even Jan. 19, but it will definitely premiere sometime in January, or else Starz's year-round Sunday night original schedule will be thrown off.

As for what we can expect, here's a rundown of what happens in book five, The Fiery Cross, though be warned of spoilers if you haven't read the books. What we're most curious about is how Murtagh (Duncan Lacroix) will continue to fit into the plot, because that character is no longer alive in the books at this point, so it will be interesting to see what the show does with him moving forward.

Kate Middleton's Laugh Is So Infectious, It's Impossible Not to Smile Over These Photos

Kate Middleton knows how to work hard, but she also knows how to have fun! When the Duchess of Cambridge isn't sharing a sweet moment with kids or playing sports during official royal appearances, she can usually be spotted breaking out into laughter. And it's not just a half-smile pity laugh either; it's a show-every-single-one-of-your-teeth laugh. Honestly, her laughing face is so good, it's practically impossible not to crack a smile yourself. Based on these photos alone, we're pretty sure she never heard a joke she didn't like. Keep reading for all the times Kate caught a case of the giggles, and then look at the rest of the royal family's best laughing faces.

Tokyo Is 13 Hours Ahead of the US, So What Does That Mean For Olympic Viewers in 2020?

With the 2020 Olympics taking place in Tokyo, American viewers are faced with a familiar question: will they be broadcast live? The answer is yes and no, just as it has been in previous years.

NBC, which owns the broadcast rights in the US, will be combining live and tape-delayed coverage on its networks, as well as using a wide variety of platforms to bring the events to viewers as they happen - and for the first time, social media will be playing a huge role.

Because the partnership with NBC is so significant to the Olympics, the organizing committee has scheduled some of the marquee events during time slots that will allow North American viewers to watch live in prime time. "Even though we're 13 hours apart from these Asian time zones, we can have a fair amount of coverage, especially in prime time," NBC Olympics president Gary Zenkel told the Philadelphia Inquirer. "Swimming is in the morning in Tokyo, so it's perfectly primed for a 9, 10 o'clock [p.m. here] start." The network hasn't said whether it will broadcast the opening ceremonies live, since those will take place in the early morning on the East Coast; presumably they'll be played at least once during primetime, but there's been no word yet on whether the ceremonies will be available to stream. (They were during the 2018 Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea.)

NBC will cover a large number of events live across its various channels and digital platforms. However, as the Inquirer confirmed, those streams will be accessible only if you already have a paid subscription to a partner cable, satellite, or streaming service. There's another option if you're not able to access those streams: Twitter! Variety reports that NBC and Twitter have partnered for exclusive Olympics coverage. The content will include daily 20-minute studio shows, and Twitter will give viewers the opportunity each day to vote on which of NBC's primetime events should be available to live stream on Twitter as well. It's a new frontier, and we can't wait to tune in.

Suddenly. . . blood appeared, and it became apparent that this would not be a conventional performance.

Left Hand Blue! A Giant Inflatable Twister Board Exists, So Get Ready For Family Game Night

Family game night just got a little more exciting thanks to this giant, inflatable Twister board - it's like a bounce house and a board game in one! As fun as regular Twister is, I'm pretty sure the added challenge of trying to keep your balance on a wobbling vinyl "game board" makes the classic game just a little more difficult (and more fun). Created by Hammacher Schlemmer & Company, the inflatable Twister game costs a chill (re: not chill) $2,000 and supports up to 1,500 pounds of weight - so the whole family can play!

The double-stitched vinyl playing mat features 64 dots (eight rows of eight dots) in Twister's original colors and comes with an air blower and a 24-inch spinnable wheel to determine which move each player will have to make on their turn. So, who's going to be the last one standing on your next game night?
