For various reasons, I know a lot of people aren't willing to go see Joker in theaters. After seeing the film, directed by Todd Phillips and starring Joaquin Phoenix, I can say I understand why there's so much controversy floating around this film in the current political and societal climate - at its core, it's about a man who struggles with his mental health, is constantly sh*t on by the world, and retaliates in the most violent ways. In today's landscape, it's absolutely terrifying.

How to Turn Off Your Brain Before Bed, So You Can Finally Get a Good Night's Sleep
You may be physically exhausted when you get into bed at night, but if your mind is racing, there's a good chance you'll have trouble falling asleep. That's why it's so important to find ways to unwind before bed, so you can quiet those thoughts and get a full night of restful sleep. Melissa Bernbaum, MD, a neurologist who specializes in sleep medicine at Huntington Hospital in New York, told POPSUGAR that this process actually starts hours before bedtime.
In addition to avoiding daytime naps, Dr. Bernbaum recommends cutting off caffeine around noon if you're typically in bed at 10 p.m. "There are some people who say that caffeine doesn't prevent them from falling asleep, [but] it may actually decrease deep sleep," she explained. Starting at least an hour before bedtime, power down any devices such as computers, tablets, and smartphones. You should also try to avoid anything that causes stress in the evenings, including work. "While some of us have jobs that require working from home at times, try to avoid any non-urgent work related activities prior to bedtime," Dr. Bernbaum advised.

If you're constantly on the go, you may only have time to worry once you're lying down - so, to combat this, Dr. Bernbaum suggests picking a designated time earlier in the evening to work through anything that's on your mind. "This way, [when you're] getting in bed, you can feel reassured that you have already dealt with your stresses."
Once that's done - and at least 30 minutes before bed - Dr. Bernbaum recommends switching to a relaxing activity, such as reading a book or practicing meditation.
You might also try yoga or light stretching, which can reduce stress and anxiety and promote sleepiness, explained Kent Smith, D-ABDSM, ASBA, president of the American Sleep and Breathing Academy and founding director of Sleep Dallas. More intense exercise may do the opposite, though, so wrap up those cardio sessions at least two hours before bed.

Dragun Beauty's Latest Launch Is Basically Magic In the Form of a 6-Pan Face Palette
Nikita Dragun has left me inspired on many occasions. I don't say that as a fan of the YouTuber, even though I've watched her greet her "draguns" from her bedroom since, well, I was in my dorm room. I say that as a beauty editor, makeup lover, and woman who believes in the power of makeup as a way to help others feel like their best selves and express themselves creatively.
Dragun recently released what she called her Dragun Beauty Face Palette ($45) and credited her journey as a transgender woman building her brand as the inspiration behind it. While that alone made me want to rip the outer packaging of her palette and dive right into the pressed powders, it was her tribute to her mother that made me even more excited to try it. My mother was, after all, the person who spurred my love of makeup and made me the woman I am today.
Once I got my hands on the palette, I flipped open its purple case - which features a 3D, anime-inspired illustration of Nikita Dragun's face - to six pans of powders. It contains two bronzer shades (Fem, which is a light caramel color, and Surge, a dark cocoa), two peach-pink blushes (T Girl, which has a fine shimmer, and BB Girl, which has a matte finish), and two highlighters (Fantasy, which is a cool lavender with a fine shimmer and Silicone, which is gold with slightly chunkier sparkle). After sweeping my finger across each of the pans, I found that the powders were both silky and pigmented. They blended seamlessly into my medium-tan skin tone. I picked up a mix of both Surge and Fem with a contour brush and swept it along my jawline, cheekbones, and the bridge of my nose before buffing it out. Then, I lightly tapped BB Girl and T Girl onto the apples of my cheeks. This bronzed, glowy makeup look is one I would typically wear to work. To make it even more eye-catching, I used a fluffy highlighter blush to add one of the vibrant highlighter hues.
I was surprised to find that I preferred Fantasy over Silicone. I typically gravitate toward golden highlighters, but the lavender gave my cheeks a subtle element of magic.

This "Mushroom Blond" Hair Color Is About to Take Over Your Instagram Feeds
Between the new "wheat blond" hair trend sweeping Hollywood (a la Millie Bobby Brown and Dua Lipa) and the quintessential platinum that comes with the cooler months, there are a ton of hair colors you can fill your Fall inspiration board with. If you still haven't found the one to ask for at your next salon appointment, consider the new "mushroom blond" hair color.
Mushroom blond hair is exactly what it sounds like: It's a version of bronde that hairstylists at NYC-based Butterfly Studio Salon describe as being closer to "beige" or "nude." Tamara Defelice of the salon tells POPSUGAR that the look is perfect for those who got "super brassy from going the lightest shades of blond in the Summer, because it preserves hair's health all during cooler seasons."
What sets mushroom blond apart from similar hair colors its key features: the dark cool brown hue that comes from the root, and the lighter pieces that frame the face. This "Mushroom Blond" Hair Color Is About to Take Over Your Instagram Feeds
Between the new "wheat blond" hair trend sweeping Hollywood (a la Millie Bobby Brown and Dua Lipa) and the quintessential platinum that comes with the cooler months, there are a ton of hair colors you can fill your Fall inspiration board with. If you still haven't found the one to ask for at your next salon appointment, consider the new "mushroom blond" hair color.
Mushroom blond hair is exactly what it sounds like: It's a version of bronde that hairstylists at NYC-based Butterfly Studio Salon describe as being closer to "beige" or "nude." Tamara Defelice of the salon tells POPSUGAR that the look is perfect for those who got "super brassy from going the lightest shades of blond in the Summer, because it preserves hair's health all during cooler seasons."
What sets mushroom blond apart from similar hair colors its key features: the dark cool brown hue that comes from the root, and the lighter pieces that frame the face. "Don't be scared to keep or create icier blonde pieces around the face frame," Defelice said, and she suggests keeping the look toned with a color-depositing hair product like the Kerastase Bain Ultra-Violet Purple Shampoo ($33).

The True Story Behind the Texas Chainsaw Massacre Is Way More Disturbing Than the Movie
Tobe Hooper's 1974 film The Texas Chain Saw Massacre is one of cinema's OG horror classics and a must see for any scary movie aficionado. Given how stomach-churning a lot of the scenes in the gory slasher can be, it's hard to imagine that the film's story has any root in reality. Unfortunately, like a lot of movies and TV shows out there, a real-life serial killer served as inspiration for the movie's chainsaw-wielding villain, Leatherface.
While a family of cannibalistic hillbillies who prey on unsuspecting teenagers is luckily not part of the original story (that we know of), the idea for Leatherface came out of the case of murderer Edward Theodore "Ed" Gein, also known as the Butcher of Plainfield. He is suspected to have killed several victims between the years of 1954 and 1957 and remains one of the most disturbing and notorious serial killers in history.
The Origin of a Serial Killer
As a young man growing up in La Crosse, WI, in the early 1900s, Gein became obsessed with his religious fanatic of a mother, Augusta, who frequently ranted and raved about lust and carnal desire to Gein and his older brother, Henry. Henry would often criticize their mother, which infuriated Gein. In 1944, while the brothers were fighting a fire in the brush near their farm in Plainfield, WI, Henry went missing. Though he was later found by police with large bruises on his head, untouched by the fire, the officers dismissed Gein as a suspect due to his shy and docile nature.
Since he didn't have a close relationship with his alcoholic father, George, Gein obsessively cared for his mother until her death in 1945. After she passed, he took up the unsettling habit of robbing graves containing recently buried female bodies. He'd cut off body parts as souvenirs (and then return the rest of the body to the grave), which led to him experimenting with necrophilia and human taxidermy.

Like Leatherface, he moved into a ramshackle home which he filled with his gruesome "trophies." Unlike the movie's killer, however, Gein wore the skins of his victims for reasons other than a disfiguring skin disease. To quell his desire to be a woman, he took to tanning the skins of the corpses he dug up to make corsets, leggings, belts made from female nipples, and masks so he could make a "woman suit" and become his mother. He reportedly had a vest of female skin complete with breasts attached and female genitalia to wear over his own.
He eventually went on to kill two women, Mary Hogan and Bernice Worden, in his town in 1957 (and was a main suspect in many other missing persons cases). Though Leatherface uses a chainsaw throughout the film, Gein shot both of his victims with a pistol. Once caught, Gein pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity and was committed to a criminal mental hospital. Around a decade later, he stood trial again and was found guilty of murder and sent to the Central State Hospital in Wisconsin and the Mendota Mental Health Institute, where he later died of natural causes in 1984.
The Films He's Influenced
On top of giving Hollywood the idea for Leatherface, Gein also inspired a few other iconic horror movie characters. The first is Norman Bates, whom author Robert Bloch based off of Gein in his 1959 novel Psycho. Alfred Hitchcock later adapted the story for his hit 1960 thriller and cast Anthony Perkins as Norman. The parallels between Norman and Gein are obvious: both had an unhealthy fascination with their overbearing mothers and a love of taxidermy, and both dressed up as women in the wake of their mothers' deaths. The Silence of the Lambs fans might see connections between Gein and the Jame Gumb character (aka "Buffalo Bill"), who was created with Gein's bloody history in mind.
There have been a number of sequels to The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. Most recently, more than 40 years after the 1974 original hit theaters, 2017's Leatherface told the villain's origin story, offering a glimpse into how this particular character came to be. While all of these horror films are grisly, to be sure, the real-life inspiration has us far more unsettled.
