Say Hello to 300+ Cool New Emoji, Including a Sloth, an Oyster, and Garlic!

A whole slew of new emoji arrived on Oct. 28 when Apple released iOS 13.2. Many of these emoji are ones that Emojipedia previewed earlier this year, but there was no set release date at the time. Now they're officially hitting Apple devices, and the new designs include an otter, a sloth, and an oyster. Other inclusive additions include same-sex couples, gender-neutral people, an ear with a hearing aid, a deaf person, and manual and mechanical wheelchairs.

There are lots more options in the food section, too. We now have a waffle, butter, falafel, a mate drink, onion, and garlic. There are a total of 398 new emoji designs when you consider the number of gender and skin-tone options. This latest update comes about a year after the Apple iOS 12.1 update brought us new emoji like the llama and the bagel, but there's always more up emoji creators' sleeves.

For this newest release, Apple partnered with the nonprofit organization Unicode Consortium after proposing more representative emoji in a letter last Fall. Get excited as you catch a glimpse of all the new emoji, and be sure to update your phone to use 'em all.

The Meaning Behind La Catrina and Why It's a Symbol of Día de los Muertos

It's not Halloween but rather the first couple of days in November when the celebration of death is at the cultural forefront in many Spanish-speaking countries - and particularly in Mexico. One of the most common symbols you'll see around Día de los Muertos is La Catrina, a statement-making skeletal figure (a bit reminiscent of sugar skulls) adorned in a fine dress and hat.

According to urban legend, La Catrina's roots come from Aztec death goddess Mictecacihuatl. In the legend, the goddess served the same purpose as La Catrina does today: to honor and protect those who have passed and to symbolize the relationship Mexicans have with death.

The current iteration of La Catrina's look was conceptualized by lithographer and printer José Guadalupe Posada, who is said to have designed the first La Catrina skull in the early 1900s. In Posada's depiction, La Catrina had only a head and hat, which symbolized respect for the reality of death. In particular, the hat has been said to represent the artist's perception that death does not discriminate against anyone, regardless of class - historically, only the extremely wealthy wore hats.

Posada's original La Catrina was built upon by artist Diego Rivera (Frida Kahlo's husband) when he created a mural that represented over 400 years of Mexican history called Dream of a Sunday Afternoon in Alameda Park, now located in the Museo Mural Diego Rivera in Mexico City. This mural marks the first depiction of La Catrina as a full body wearing the ornate clothing and accessories she typically wears today.

While Rivera painted La Catrina in the mid-1900s, she continues to be an ever-present symbol of Mexican culture's celebration of Día de los Muertos. The skeleton figure can be found throughout homes and altars with offerings on her behalf. On Nov. 1 and 2, many dress in costume as La Catrina to further underscore her presence during these festivities.

Alicia Keys Performed an Unexpected Post Malone Cover, So "Congratulations" to Us All

Image Source: Getty / Kevin Winter

Alicia Keys is a master of many genres. Proof of that recently came in the form of an unexpected Post Malone cover she performed at the 2019 iHeartRadio Music Festival in Las Vegas. (Though the festival took place in September, the singer is just now sharing footage from the performance.) In the video, shown below, Keys sings her recently released "Show Me Love" before transitioning into the rapper's 2016 hit "Congratulations."

"I just want to vibe on this song right here," Keys said as she walked toward the piano. Following the fun interlude, she seamlessly went back to singing her own song like the pro she is. In her caption, Keys suggested she was down to collaborate with Malone, an idea we are certainly not opposed to.

12 Times Jimmy Fallon, Notorious Giggler, Lost It on Saturday Night Live

If you've tuned in to The Tonight Show, you know that Jimmy Fallon is prone to giggle fits, whether he's watching Taylor Swift cry over a banana or doing a ridiculous commercial with Jessica Biel. But his easy laughter came long before his hosting gig - you can see it in action when he frequently broke character as a cast member on Saturday Night Live (yes, even more than Bill Hader as Stefon). You can't always blame him though. It's probably hard to keep it together when Will Ferrell does something utterly ridiculous, whether he's a posh department store manager in "Jeffrey's" or a horny guy in a hot tub in "The Love-ahs With Barbara and Dave." From conspicuous mouth twitching to hysterical laughter, here are all the times that Jimmy broke on SNL!

The Good Place Cast Has Some Forking Terrific Roles Lined Up After the Show Ends

We're really forking unhappy that The Good Place is ending after its fourth season, and we know we aren't the only ones. The NBC comedy, which first aired back in September 2016, is one of the weirdest and most hilarious series out there, and we're going to miss our favorite members of the afterlife when the series wraps. But even though the end of The Good Place feels like the Bad Place, we don't have to say goodbye to Eleanor and the gang for good at the end of season four. Here's where you can expect to see cast of The Good Place next.

Who's Lucy Hale Dated? We're Sorry to Say the List Doesn't Include Ezra Fitz

You may know her best as Aria Montgomery, and soon enough, you'll know her better as Katy Keene, but here's what we're wondering: Who has been lucky enough to know Lucy Hale as their girlfriend? It's no secret that Lucy is a busy lady, especially with the forthcoming debut of the Riverdale spinoff Katy Keene, where she plays the titular character. Even though fans have been speculating about her dating life ever since her split from Life Sentence costar Riley Smith last year, the truth of the matter is that Lucy's busy practicing some self-love at the moment.

On her 30th birthday in June, Hale took to Instagram to reflect on the milestone, noting that, "I've had so much to smile about but I've also had my heart ripped in two," and for now, Lucy wants to "find things I love about myself." She may be single for the time being, but let's take a walk down memory lane and see who's romanced the Pretty Little Liars star in the past.

Want to Get Straight to the Spoilers? Here's What Happens in Let It Snow

Let It Snow: Three Holiday Romances by John Green, Lauren Myracle, and Maureen Johnson, is about to be adapted by Netflix into a romantic comedy featuring the likes of Isabella Merced, Kiernan Shipka, Jacob Batalon, Odeya Rush, and Joan Cusack. The book, originally published in 2008, features a collection of three distinct, yet intertwined stories of teenagers as they weather a Christmas snow storm in Gracetown. Before you cozy up under a blanket with a piping hot mug of cocoa and your loved ones to indulge in some early holiday cinema fun (the movie drops on Nov. 8), let's review what happens in the book.

Will this Christmas Eve be a night of miracles or a night of disasters? A terrible snow storm, a stranded train, and Gracetown - a small town tucked away in the middle of nowhere that will almost make you miss the traditional sleep-inducing Christmas dinner. And yet, Jubilee, Jeb, Tobin, JP, the Duke, Addie, Dorrie, and Tegan will share the most bizarre and random Christmas Eve of their lives. In a roadside Waffle House filled with cheerleaders, unexpected meetings and encounters multiply, while couples get together, break up, and get back together again.

Warning: If you don't want the most important spoilers from the book before you watch the movie, then read no further!

"The Jubilee Express" Spoilers

After her parents are arrested during a department store riot in the Flobie Santa Village, Jubilee Dougal takes a train to Florida to spend Christmas Eve with her grandparents. She meets Jeb, who is headed to Gracetown to get back together with his girlfriend Addie, on the train. After the train gets stranded in Gracetown because of a massive snow storm, Jubilee heads to the Waffle House where she meets Stuart, who invites her to weather the storm at his house. She eventually accepts his offer, taking a shortcut that lands her in icy water (literally!). Jubilee simply can't get to sleep without calling her boyfriend Noah, whose Christmas Eve party she had to miss because of her parents' arrest, but the lackluster phone call and Noah's unresponsiveness leave her disappointed.

The next day, Jubilee opens up to Stuart about her phone call with Noah, who reveals that he has broken up with his girlfriend after finding out that she had been cheating on him. Feeling caught up in the moment, Stuart and Jubilee kiss before being interrupted by his mom and sister. Jubilee heads back to train, but Stuart catches up to her and convinces her to come back home with him to spend the holiday with his family.

"A Cheertastic Christmas Miracle" Spoilers

John Green tells the tale of Tobin, JP, and the Duke. The three friends watch movies at Tobin's house while his parents are stuck at the airport. They head to the Waffle House after their friend Keun calls to let them know that a group of cheerleaders desperate to play Twister are there, only to get stranded in the snow. They decide to soldier on through the snow on foot, but Tobin comes to the realization that he has caught feelings for the Duke. In spite of a mild flirtation with the cheerleaders, Tobin confesses his feelings for the Duke, and the two share a kiss in the sparkling snow outside the Waffle House, then bask in the newness of their altered relationship.

"The Patron Saint of Pigs" Spoilers

In the final story, Lauren Myracle introduces us to Addie, who is lonely, heartbroken, and confused after breaking up with her boyfriend Jeb. Why did they break up? She was seduced by Charlie at a drunken Christmas party, incurring Jeb's scorn. After being told by her friends Tegan and Dorrie that she and her selfishness are to blame for her breakup, Addie offers to pick up a teacup pig for Tegan in order to make amends, only to find out that the pig has already been sold to an elderly woman whom Addie eventually finds. She returns to Starbucks (where she works) with the pig in tow, where she happily reunites with Jeb.

All in all, these stories woven around the main theme of love end happily, leaving the reader with a sense of warmth and sentimentality. This is a great read if you are a John Green fan, and the movie is bound to be just as sweet as the novel.

This Delicious Pecan Pie Will Look Right at Home on Your Holiday Table - and It's Low-Carb

If you're on a low-carb diet but you can't imagine celebrating the holidays without a slice of pecan pie, I have some very good news. This recipe delivers the same rich flavor without the carbs. You just need to make a few simple swaps, and dessert is back on the table.

First, let's talk about the crust: you'll use almond flour in place of traditional flour, then add the low-carb sweetener erythritol to the dough.

For the filling, you'll swap in cashew, almond, or pecan butter, which deliver a richness, color, and creaminess that's similar to the caramel found in a traditional pecan pie. Finally, you'll add Swerve brown sugar substitute, which gives the filling that molasses taste without raising your blood sugar.

Of course, the one thing you can't do without is the pecans themselves. I've used whole pecans, but you can try pecan halves or chopped pecans if you prefer. If you like a bit of crunch, add more pecans to the filling and on top. You can also sprinkle in cinnamon, ginger, and nutmeg for extra flavor! Then simply serve the pie as is or enjoy it with low-carb ice cream or whipped cream.

Low-Carb Pecan Pie

Original Recipe

Ingredients

  1. Crust
    2 1/3 cups almond flour
    1 egg
4 tablespoons ghee or grass-fed butter, melted
    1 tablespoon erythritol
    1/4 teaspoon salt
  1. Filling
    1 cup Swerve brown sugar
    1/3 cup erythritol
    4 tablespoons butter, melted
1/2 cup cashew, almond, or pecan butter
    1/4 cup heavy cream
    3 eggs
    1/4 teaspoon sea salt
    1/2 tablespoon vanilla extract
    2 1/3 cups whole pecans

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F.
  2. Combine crust ingredients in a bowl using a rubber spatula.
  3. Spray a 10"x11.25" pie pan with oil or butter, and press the crust using a spoon to cover all edges to the top evenly.
  4. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes or just until firm. Take out, and allow to cool.
  5. Prepare the filling by whisking Swerve brown sugar, erythritol, butter, nut butter, heavy cream, eggs, salt, and vanilla extract in a large bowl until it has a smooth and shiny appearance.
  6. Add only 2 cups of pecans to the batter, and use a rubber spatula to incorporate.
  7. Pour the filling into the pie crust.
  8. Use the remaining 1/3 cup of pecans to decorate the top.
  9. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, just until most of the pie is firm. The center will still be a little soft.
  10. Allow to cool for two to three hours, then enjoy.
