Worried About Sharing Your Tiny Room With a Newborn? We Asked the Experts What to Know
Whether this is your first rodeo or you're a seasoned pro, sharing a room with a newborn may sound daunting . . . babies aren't known as the best roommates. Of course, you want to bring your baby home into the safest environment - which usually means getting over the fear and sharing a room with your baby - but it's only natural to worry about the logistics of doing that. (After all, babies maybe be small, but they take up a lot of space!) To help you prepare to room-share, we've asked experts about exactly what you need to know, so you can turn your stress into success and safely shack up with your newborn.
Why should I share a room with my baby?
Safety is the biggest motivator for room sharing with your baby. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) in their 2016 updated recommendations says that babies should ideally share a room with their parents for a year, or at minimum six months, to reduce the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) by up to 50 percent. With your newborn sleeping in your room, you can see and hear any dangers or sleep concerns that may cause harm to your baby.
How should I set up my baby's crib?
The first thing to check off your list when purchasing or setting up a crib for your baby is to ensure that it meets the recommended safety standards. The AAP advises that cribs meet the standards of the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), who provide guidelines for slat spacing, mattress fit and firmness, and crib walls. Additionally, the AAP advises parents to use new cribs not only to ensure that the current safety standards are met and no recalls posted, but also to guarantee that all the correct hardware is available and assembly instructions are available.
When outfitting your baby's sleep space, the APP says that cribs should not have bumpers, pillows, toys, blankets, or any kind of soft bedding inside. Instead, keep the crib bare with just a snug, fitted sheet over the mattress. Basically, "a crib or bassinet should be kept minimal and very simple," says Susete Pinto, a pediatric sleep consultant and founder of Night Night Baby Sleep Consulting. So save the cute Baby Shark stuffed animal until your child is older. Pinto adds, "If parents worry about baby being cold, a newborn up to 10 weeks may be swaddled to help keep warm. After 10 weeks, a wearable blanket is safest for the baby to sleep in while staying warm."
Can I share a bed with my baby?
Though it's extremely common, the AAP still does not recommend bed-sharing with your baby because it introduces additional risk factors (like soft bedding) that could cause unintentional harm to your baby. Syeda Amna Husain, M.D., FAAP, founder of Pure Direct Pediatrics supports and extends the AAP guidelines to breastfeeding in bed as well - recommending that parents even refrain from bringing a baby into their bed to feed, if at all possible. "It's better to feed the baby in a place outside of the bed so you're not tempted to fall back asleep," she says. "If there's even the slightest possibility that you might fall asleep, it's safer to move out of an area that has pillows, blankets, or other sleeping members of the family nearby to decrease the risk of suffocation."
Can I share a small room with my baby?
There are plenty of options available to small space dwellers that still provide a safe sleeping environment for your little one. Mini cribs, portable cribs, or bassinets are all fantastic choices for a small room because not only do they take up less space, but most often they are light-weight and easy to move around if needed. Just be sure to select one that meets the AAP's and CPSC's recommendations.
How do I get sleep with my baby in the same room?
Newborns can be loud little sleepers with all their grunts, movements, and heavy breathing; coupled with the stress of having a newborn, it's natural to worry about the quality of your shut eye. Pinto understands that it may be difficult for parents and baby to simultaneously get quality sleep in a shared space, so she suggests using a white noise machine to drown out some of those extra sounds. "And as your baby grows, a room divider is an amazing way to help differentiate between your baby's space and your space, so everyone can get the quality sleep they need," she says. Additionally, the AAP believes that parents should help their babies create good sleep habits by practicing safe sleep behaviors, keeping outside factors (like temperature and lighting) in check, and creating a calming bedtime routine to see if it makes a difference in your baby's sleep patterns. In turn, creating good sleep habits for your baby, will allow you to get the adequate sleep you need. As with all the changes that come with a newborn baby, learning to sleep in the same room as your baby takes some time, but there's no need to worry. Eventually, your parental instinct will kick in, and you will find what is best and safest for your family.

Shay Mitchell Shared a Letter For Atlas That Any Daughter Would Want to Read Again and Again
Shay Mitchell might be new to mom life, but the message she recently shared for her daughter is full of age-old widsom. The 32-year-old Dollface actress and her partner, Matte Babel, have stayed relatively private since welcoming their baby last month. On Wednesday, however, Shay unveiled the newborn's name - Atlas Noa - along with a sweet photo and heartfelt note.

Model Mama Cax Lost Her Leg to Cancer and, Years Later, Handcycled the NYC Marathon
At age 14, blogger and model Mama Cax, born Cacsmy Brutus and who refers to herself as Cax, was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, an aggressive bone cancer. It spread to her lungs, and after chemo and an unsuccessful hip replacement, she received a hemipelvectomy, an amputation that removed her right leg and part of her hip bone. It required her to use crutches and a prosthetic leg.
The Haitian-American, now 29, has a successful lifestyle brand and a flourishing career as a model. She's graced the runway at the 2016 White House #DesignForAll Fashion Show, has been in campaigns for Olay and Tommy Hilfiger, walked in New York Fashion Week, and was named one of Glamour's Women Of The Year All Year 2019. Cax's next feat, though, involved a handcycle and 26.2 miles: the 2019 New York City Marathon.
Through the Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF) Cax, who openly campaigns for disability awareness, was able to get a grant for a handcycle and used that to train. "They're basically an organization that provide equipment for anyone who's interested in joining sports and wants to find adaptive ways to do it," she told POPSUGAR. "What I really like about them is that you don't have to participate in sports competitively to be able to get a grant for equipment." Six months before the race, she hired a trainer and worked on her upper-body strength at the gym by weightlifting and rowing.
It wasn't Cax's first time with a handcycle - she joined wheelchair basketball in college and then transitioned over to handcycles later on - but closer to race day, she said, it was about getting more practice with the handcycle going uphill and downhill and seeing what the terrain would be like on Nov. 3. She explained, "Going uphill, that's where the battle is. You have to put some grease on the shoulders."
The NYC Marathon had been in the back of Cax's mind for a while before she actually decided to set her sights on the race. Her goal was to finish in two to two-and-a-half hours, though she ended up clocking in at 3:31:37. "I'm obviously proud that I was able to finish it, but if I were to do it again, my goal would be to do it in a shorter amount of time," she said.
What fueled her during the tough parts of the race was all of the energy from the cheering spectators. "Sometimes they were the only indicators that you were halfway through," Cax said. "They would tell you, 'This is the last bridge you're crossing,' or 'You're almost at the finish line,' and that kind of gets you going." Areas where the crowds were particularly encouraging included Brooklyn and Harlem (the drumming in Harlem really got her in the mood to push through, she noted). Some of the other handcyclists shared encouragement as well (she was one out of 69 people who finished the handcycle division). "Several of them were saying encouraging words like 'Keep going,' and 'You can do it.'" One even assisted her when, before the halfway mark, her chain broke.
The last thing that kept Cax's determination up was the fact that her family and friends were waiting for her at the finish line. "Exhausted. Body hurts. Resting for the next 24hrs," she wrote on Instagram that day. As for advice she'd give people handcycling the NYC Marathon in the future, "two major things are knowing your equipment and also, even more-so, knowing your body." Cax said that you might need to make some adjustments to your handcycle to be more comfortable, whether that's putting a pillow on the seat or buying equipment to lengthen the handle - she noted that she wouldn't have been able to complete the race if she hadn't made prior adjustments.
The biggest advice that Cax was given leading up to the marathon was to control her pace and not go too fast in the beginning. "It's about saving energy for the last 13 miles," she explained. "The first 13 miles you'll have energy, and if you're in beast mode, towards the end, you're completely burned out. So, I had that in mind the whole time: 'Take your time, take your time.'" A lot of cyclists also advised her to have fun despite feeling competitive and aiming for a set goal.
"I'm not sure if I'm going to be in another marathon, but it's not out of the question," Cax said. "I'm definitely going to keep up my workout regimen." She enjoys rock climbing, swimming, and yoga. Yoga especially soothes her chronic pain, she added. Fitness in general has played a huge part in helping Cax deal with depression, she said. "It's knowing that it might be something that you have to deal with for a long time," she noted, "but what's important is how you cope with it."

That said, as a practicing gynecologist, I believe it's perfectly reasonable to try to find relief from a yeast infection at home before making an appointment with your doctor. First, you should know the risks and just how long you should wait for home remedies to work.
What Are the Symptoms of a Yeast Infection?
The hallmark of yeast is usually severe itching, which often gets worse and worse over a matter of days. This can be accompanied by thick, cottage-cheese-like discharge, but it's possible to have a yeast infection without significant discharge. Symptoms usually start at the opening of the vagina and expand out to the sides of the vulva and even down toward the anus. Swelling and pain can occur as the infection worsens.
Sometimes the itching and infection can be so intense that it causes the skin to break or bumps and lesions to arise. Many of my patients see lesions or skin breaks and automatically think it must be an STI like herpes. Though that's possible, yeast can sometimes produce similar symptoms. I wish there were a definitive way to tell the difference between the two, but there isn't. If the skin lesions are accompanied by a thick, white discharge, yeast may be the cause, but as I already mentioned, yeast can be present even without discharge.
The Best Home Remedies For Treating a Yeast Infection
The most effective treatment for a suspected yeast infection is an over-the-counter antifungal medication. I personally prefer three-day or seven-day vaginal treatments over those touted to clear up an infection in one day, just based on my decade of experience treating patients. Be warned that these medications can sometimes burn - many antifungal preparations contain alcohol, which, coupled with broken skin, can be painful. Your symptoms should start to improve by the second or third day, but always finish the entire course of medication to ensure the infection is properly treated.
If you're looking for a more natural treatment, you can try coconut oil to soothe the external vulva. Coconut oil has antifungal properties and is very moisturizing. I also like boric acid suppositories for treatment and prevention of yeast. When used properly, these vaginal suppositories can reset the proper acidic pH of the vagina and treat or prevent both yeast infections and bacterial vaginosis. Proper, careful use is very important, and the suppositories need to be kept out of reach of children or small pets since they're toxic if swallowed.
To be clear, there's no scientific evidence to support putting anything else in your vagina - garlic, yogurt, herbs, apple cider vinegar - and in some cases, doing so can even be harmful.
How Long Should You Wait Before Seeing a Doctor?
If your symptoms don't improve within two to three days of at-home treatment, it's time to make an appointment with your doctor. While a yeast infection isn't dangerous, it can increase your risk for other dangerous infections. A Guide to Brockhampton: Get to Know the Boy Band's 13 Members
I'm not here to tell you how to live your life, but I'll say this: you - and I cannot stress this enough - need to hop on the Brockhampton train. The self-proclaimed boy band consists of 13 members - Kevin Abstract, Matt Champion, Dom McLennon, Ciarán "Bearface" McDonald, Merlyn Wood, Russell "Joba" Boring, Romil Hemnani, Jabari Manwa, Kiko Merley, Robert Ontenient, Henock "HK" Sileshi, Jon Nunes, and Ashlan Grey - and has been delivering bangers since 2015. Every member brings something special to the table, whether it's opening up about their sexuality, struggles with mental health, or their general disregard for acting a certain way to appease society.
So, how did Brockhampton come to be? Well, in 2010, Kevin decided he wanted to start a musical collective. He joined forces with schoolmates at Woodlands High School in Texas, as well as users on a Kanye West fan forum to create the band AliveSinceForever. At first, there were about 30 members, but the number dwindled as they became more serious about cultivating their sound. In 2013, AliveSinceForever released their debut EP, ASF. However, they rebranded the following year as Brockhampton. Since then, the band has dropped six albums - 2016's All-American Trash, 2017's Saturation, Saturation II, and Saturation III (yes, they dished out three albums in one year), 2018's Iridescence, and this year's Ginger.
Throughout their musical journey, the group has made a handful of other alterations to their framework - notably, the 2018 ousting of cofounder Ameer Vann following sexual misconduct allegations - until they became the now 13-strong squad. At first, I had to coax the ink out of the pen, shaking and sweeping the brush against the back of my hand, before it finally dispensed a smooth stream of the stuff (so don't be alarmed if your pen doesn't dispense that much when you begin to swatch it). It had a slick - but not watery - consistency with just enough play time to maneuver before it dried down. I drew on my extra large wings, and found that it took two layers of the liquid liner to get the deep, dark black hue that I love for my eye look.

A Guide to Brockhampton: Get to Know the Boy Band's 13 Members
I'm not here to tell you how to live your life, but I'll say this: you - and I cannot stress this enough - need to hop on the Brockhampton train. The self-proclaimed boy band consists of 13 members - Kevin Abstract, Matt Champion, Dom McLennon, Ciarán "Bearface" McDonald, Merlyn Wood, Russell "Joba" Boring, Romil Hemnani, Jabari Manwa, Kiko Merley, Robert Ontenient, Henock "HK" Sileshi, Jon Nunes, and Ashlan Grey - and has been delivering bangers since 2015. Every member brings something special to the table, whether it's opening up about their sexuality, struggles with mental health, or their general disregard for acting a certain way to appease society.
So, how did Brockhampton come to be? Well, in 2010, Kevin decided he wanted to start a musical collective. He joined forces with schoolmates at Woodlands High School in Texas, as well as users on a Kanye West fan forum to create the band AliveSinceForever. At first, there were about 30 members, but the number dwindled as they became more serious about cultivating their sound. In 2013, AliveSinceForever released their debut EP, ASF. However, they rebranded the following year as Brockhampton. Since then, the band has dropped six albums - 2016's All-American Trash, 2017's Saturation, Saturation II, and Saturation III (yes, they dished out three albums in one year), 2018's Iridescence, and this year's Ginger.
Throughout their musical journey, the group has made a handful of other alterations to their framework - notably, the 2018 ousting of cofounder Ameer Vann following sexual misconduct allegations - until they became the now 13-strong squad. Although Brockhampton has already confirmed that the band won't last forever (*sniffles*), we're going to enjoy every minute of their incomparable chemistry and enigmatic allure.
