Why My Mom Told Me Latinas Never Wear All Black

Coco Chanel once gave great advice on editing a wardrobe: "Before you leave the house, look in the mirror and remove one accessory." I heard this for the first time when I started showing interest in fashion, but it never really resonated with me. I do look at myself in the mirror before leaving the house. The difference is, if needed, I add a pop of color to my outfit.

I was curious as to why I couldn't align with Chanel's quote. After years of studying fashion history and theory, I understood that the answer was in my heritage: Latinas are never encouraged to remove one accessory, quite the opposite, we're told that we should always add more, especially if it's color. That's why, before going out, I scan my outfit to see if it has enough color, because my mom told me one never wears all black, unless you're going to a funeral.

In Latin America, regardless of the country, black is rarely a part of the equation, let alone an all-black outfit. In Colombia, where I'm from, black is worn more often in cities near the mountains, where the weather is cold all year round and black is practical and suitable. For those of us born in the Caribbean region of the country, the situation is completely different: black is not only impractical for year-round sunny weather, but it's also culturally linked to mourning and grief. "¿Quién se murió?" is my mom's first thought if I dare wear an all-black outfit even in New York - where black is pretty much the uniform - and God forbid that I add a new piece of black clothing to my closet because that means hearing my mom complain.

Latinas in particular find a way of expression, of differentiation, a quest for uniqueness in color. To me, as a Colombian woman, color comes naturally, even more when I am there. In Barranquilla, the city where I'm from, color is also an organic part of the landscape: from its flag to its diversity, everything comes in a beautiful rainbow where there's no time for darkness.

Little did I know that that notion that so many Latinx have about color, was also the idea that Americans - and American fashion - had of us, but for different reasons. Deeply engraved in the imagination of most people not born in Latin America or into Latinx families, Latinx are one and the same. This belief has its roots in the exoticization the continent has suffered through history, always being confused with the Caribbean even though we have other ecosystems and climates, and because of this, we were always thought to be a place for tropical vacations and leisure. This is why Latin American fashion is mostly represented through lighter clothes, bright colors and fitted silhouettes. It is true, however, that our indigenous communities have a lot of material production that stands out for its color, a characteristic that remains intact until today.

Life is too short to be boring. Living in NYC, I made the commitment of wearing a bit of color especially the colder months. Even within my parade of all-dark heavy winter coats, I managed to have a colorful one, and of course, it is my favorite. Every time people see it on me, they tell me how beautiful it is, but most of them tell me I'm so brave for wearing color in the winter. I tell them we all should try to have a bit more color in our lives.

Trader Joe's Mini Grinch-Inspired Christmas Trees Can Grow Up to 30 Feet Tall!

Looking for a holiday gift for the Grinch in your life? Well, look no further than Trader Joe's Grinch-inspired Grump Cypress Christmas Trees - they're adorable! Similar to the Grinch's slouch (brought on by his hatred for the holidays), this mini Christmas tree is slumped over to one side by the weight of the festive red ribbon wrapped around it and the sparkly Christmas ornament dangling from its tip. But if you don't want your Grump Tree to lean to one side, you can always remove the weighted bauble and replace it with your own mini plant decorations.

The Grump Tree ($8-$9, depending on the location) is a lemon cypress tree native to California and will keep its conical shape until it's about 30 feet tall. After the holidays, you can remove the decorations and plant the tree in your garden during early Spring or early Fall to keep the Christmas memories going. Even the Grinch has to agree that's a pretty sweet holiday gift. Take a closer look at the adorable Christmas trees ahead.

This Dwarf German Shepherd Will Always Look Like a Puppy, and He’s So Cute I Could Cry

German Shepherd puppies are crazy cute, which is why Ranger, a dwarf German Shepherd who will always look like a puppy, is for sure the most adorable dog I've ever seen in my life (apologies to my dog brother, who luckily can't read). Usually a German Shepherd's early growth is rapid, and before you can blink, they're huge - but not Ranger. The pup, who has his own Instagram account with an impressive 117,000 followers and counting, has big paws but a small to medium-size body as a result of pituitary dwarfism - which is associated with a growth hormone deficiency - unlike a typical full-grown German Shepherd.

Ranger's pituitary dwarfism is - his owners believe - a result of an infection he had as a puppy, caused by a parasite. Unfortunately, those dogs with pituitary dwarfism are expected to have a shorter lifespan and the possibility of various health issues - luckily for Ranger, his fur parents say that he's a very healthy pup, aside from dry skin causing some fur loss (likely due to his pituitary dwarfism and hormones his body isn't making). Additionally, he takes medication to regulate his thyroid. Ranger's owners are grateful to the Instagram community for giving them a platform to share Ranger's unique issues that have in turn been able to help other animal owners who have pets with pituitary dwarfism.

Although Ranger is usually posing for his followers alone, he also takes great photos with his younger siblings, a German Shepherd named Jessie and a Labrador Retriever named Hazel. See some of his sweetest photos ahead; he's so cute I could cry.

36 Signs Your Partner Is "the One"

Getting to spend your life with one person is one of the luckiest things imaginable. When my husband and I were planning our wedding many years ago, I got asked a lot of questions. While everyone wanted to know about the color scheme and wedding venue, the one thing I got asked a surprising amount was: "How did you know he was 'the one'?" The answer, of course, can be pretty long-winded and personal. Even though we might love many people in our lifetime, there might also be one person who excites you and who you want to be with for the rest of your life. Finding "the one" is special. Consider these traits of a relationship that can let you know you have found that one person who will make you smile until you're old and gray.

  13. Their friends and your friends have merged into one group.
  14. They know how you take your drink.
  15. Even when you're snot-nosed and sick, they still want to take care of you.
  16. Fights are minimal, and when they occur, they're productive.
  17. There are numerous inside jokes that only you two would understand the humor to.
  18. The idea of planning a wedding with them sounds like fun.
  19. You can be your real self around them, farts and all.
  20. Together you can sit back and enjoy silence, knowing that you don't need words to have a good time.
  21. You've told them things that no one else in the world knows.
  22. They don't judge you when you have unconventional thoughts.

3 Magical Moments From Disney's The Ultimate Christmas Present Worth Remembering

Some Christmas movies are so magical that they stick with you well beyond your childhood years, and the 2000 film The Ultimate Christmas Present is that for me. Starring then-12-year-olds Brenda Song and Hallee Hirsh, the Disney Channel original movie tells the story of two teenagers who steal a magical weather machine from a cabin in the woods and use it to make it snow in Los Angeles. As someone who grew up in California, the concept of snow alone was enough to get me hooked within the first 15 minutes. Of course, like all movies that involve magic, there's a catch.

It turns out the snow machine belongs to Santa Claus, who shows up to help the two BFFs once the device glitches and creates a blizzard big enough that it spreads all the way to San Francisco. I'm shivering just thinking about it! The bumbling elves and chocolate floods alone make this movie worth watching almost 20 years later. Read ahead to find out exactly what it is about this holiday classic that makes it stand the test of time.

My Secret to a Calm, Happy, Merry Christmas? Saying "No" to Too Many Holiday Traditions

When I was a kid, I adored everything about Christmas. With piles of presents, the smell of pine, festive decorations, glowing lights, and a smorgasbord of sweets, how could I not? As I grew up and had kids of my own, I couldn't wait to share the magic of Christmas with them. I fully intended to bake stacks of cookies, visit Santa, give massive amounts of gifts, and dress our home in gobs of sparkling lights just like my dad did when I was growing up. Until I realized just how much time and effort go into making all that magic.

During my first few years as a mom, I did all the things. To go with the Christmas tree that we trimmed as a family, I decorated the house with trinkets, candles, wreathes, and nativities. I hung lights. I baked enough cookies and sweets to keep our family on a months-long sugar high. I purchased loads of gifts and wrapped them. I took my kids to visit Santa. And when it was all over, I cleaned up too; removing ornaments and decorations then boxing them up, taking lights down, cleaning up the mess of wrapping paper and pine needles, and picking up the excess of toys that seemed to become nothing but a tripping hazard.

Since I was the one primarily responsible for creating and cleaning up the Christmas magic, the shopping and baking and decorating just added to the exhaustion of those early motherhood years. Frantically rushing to get all the things done didn't feel magical, it just felt like a distraction from my kids. While it was fun for them, it depleted me. And in the rush, I felt like we were missing each other as well as the meaning behind the season.

So in an effort to slow down and truly enjoy Christmas with my kids, I started saying "no" to many of the traditions I'd at one time thought we'd take part in for years. That meant no more overloading the house with decorations and lights, no more visits with Santa, no more spending hours - heck, even days - baking, and intentionally choosing only three gifts for each kid. And after several years, I still don't participate in the Santa charade. Nor do I create extravagant Christmas displays or bake holidays sweets. There are no more impulse buys or last minute trips to the mall, because I order their three gifts online, wrap them upon arrival, and wash my hands of any more shopping.

Despite sticking to this approach for years, my kids still do plenty of asking. My daughter wants the Elf on the Shelf to live at our house. My son wants cookies in every shape, size, and flavor. They want piles of gifts like they see at their friends' homes. They want a Griswold-style light display and a house full of red and green. But I continue to say "no" to all of this. Because I'd rather spend time doing things with them than doing all the extra stuff for them. Besides, in recent years when I've offered to bake, decorate, and hang lights with their help - because they are old enough to do so now - they've emphatically declined . . . which tells me those things aren't all that important to them anyway.

My friends give me a hard time about my apparent Scrooge complex, scolding me for not fully participating in the Spirit of Christmas. But the Spirit of Christmas isn't about stress and exhaustion, it's about family and joy and giving your best to those you love. And when I'm actually focused on those I love instead of completely overwhelmed by the excess of the season, I'm better able to give my kids the best of me.

Each year, we have a simple, slow season doing things we all enjoy. We cut down a live Christmas tree and decorate it as a family. We watch our favorite Christmas movies while eating store-bought treats, which makes for less stress and less mess. We do a tour of Christmas light displays in our city while sipping on hot cocoa from the comfort of our car. We visit a live nativity. We take a spin on a horse-drawn carriage downtown. We purchase and deliver gifts to those in need. And of course when Christmas morning arrives, we open gifts and snack on baked goods from our favorite bakery - which I promise, are a thousand times better than anything made in our own kitchen.

Some people truly have a gift for managing all the extras that the Christmas season brings, while enjoying it too. And if you're one of them, I applaud you! Your efforts are appreciated and enjoyed by those of us who aren't. But frankly, I just don't have the energy or mental space to do it myself. And even though my kids don't share in all of the holiday experiences their friends do, I don't feel bad about it because saying "no" makes me a happier mom. It saves my sanity and allows our time together to be relaxing instead of overwhelming. Saying "no" allows us all to enjoy Christmas and I know the magic is in the memories my kids will have of spending Christmas with a happy mom.

Gaining Weight Was the Hardest and Healthiest Thing I've Ever Done

Warning: some things discussed in this personal essay may be triggering to those with a history of disordered eating.

A year ago, I based my self-worth off the number on the scale. I felt that my body's natural hunger cues were signs of weakness. I believed that if I could just run longer, see a gap between my thighs, or fit into the smallest size, I would finally find happiness.

I was trapped in this cycle of disordered thoughts for half my college years. As a member of my university's lacrosse team, I wanted to have the strength and stamina to run a full game, but I didn't want the athletic build that required. I was convinced that my best self was my smallest self - and with this disillusioned belief cemented into my head, I quickly found myself consumed in an eating disorder.

A part of me knew that the body I was starving myself for was neither attainable nor healthy, but I refused to acknowledge that my behaviors were a problem. In my mind, I wasn't "sick enough" for it to be an issue, so I remained in the comfort of my eating disorder, focused on this impossible task.

Eventually, I grew tired of aspiring to be my smallest self. This was not the life I wanted.

I was certain my problems would eradicate themselves once I achieved the body, and thus the life, I wanted. Yet even as the number on the scale dropped, I was never satisfied. I kept striving for more, chasing that feeling of success that came only from the growling in my stomach. The more attention I paid to what I was eating, the more isolated I became, even from the closest people in my life. I didn't have the energy to pursue my passions, or the motivation to study, or the self-confidence to look in the mirror without tearing myself apart. I was becoming a shell of the person I once was.

But eventually, I grew tired of aspiring to be my smallest self. This was not the life I wanted, yet it was the one I had created. I spent far too long merely surviving before I realized I deserved to live.

A year later, I'm proud to say I've gained back the weight I was once so terrified of and, in doing so, I'm the healthiest I've been in years, both physically and mentally. I don't know how much I weigh now, but it doesn't matter - no scale can quantify the life I've gained back in my eyes or the memories I've made since letting my eating disorder go. I no longer make decisions about where to go or what to do based on food. Instead, I'm excited to spend time with friends and family, eating and laughing and whatever else that entails.

I missed out on so many experiences when I was wrapped up in my eating disorder, even simple ones like getting ice cream with my younger sister, grabbing a beer (or three) after class with friends, or traveling without the nagging anxiety of missing a workout. It was through these small, though at the time intimidating, tasks that I took my life back, one day at a time.

My body inevitably changed as I recovered, but with those changes came physical strength, too. I've set personal records in both distance and speed running. I even broke a six-minute mile. That was something I never imagined I would be able to do, and it would have remained unachievable, along with countless other things, had I not learned to embrace my own strength, even if that means weighing a bit more.

Eating disorders are not a choice. They're an all-consuming, mentally draining, physically demanding conflict within ourselves. The path to recovery seems daunting, and it is, but the setbacks and obstacles I faced were worth it, because they brought me to this place. There's more to life than simply existing. And while I may be a few pounds heavier, I'm infinitely lighter without the burden of my eating disorder resting on my shoulders.

If you or a loved one are in need of any help, the National Eating Disorders Association has several resources.

Missed a Birth Control Pill? An Ob-Gyn Explains What You Should Do Next

Forgetting to take your birth control is the worst, but the fix really is as simple as you've heard: take the pill as soon as you remember, even if that means popping two in the same day.

Birth control pills contain either progestin or a combination of progestin and estrogen, hormones that help thicken the mucus at the cervix to prevent sperm from reaching an egg and, in most cases, even stop ovulation. While doubling up on these hormones may make you a little nauseous, there's no harm in taking two pills at the same time, Renee Wellenstein, DO, a board-certified ob-gyn, told POPSUGAR.

That said, depending on the pill you missed, you may not need to take it at all. "Typically, the last week are sugar pills, meaning they contain no hormones," Dr. Wellenstein said. "So, if one of these is missed, it's no big deal." However, missing a pill earlier in the pack can make your birth control less effective at preventing pregnancy. In that case, use a condom or another backup method just to be safe. Exactly how long you'll need to use another form of contraception depends on the type of birth control you're on and how long you went without it - you can find some general guidelines here.

So, what happens if your pill gets crushed or falls down the drain? When a mishap like that gets in the way of you taking it, "take the next pill at the regular time and use condoms for the remainder of the pill pack," Dr. Wellenstein advised.
