Experts Explain Why You Might Want to Stop Sleeping on Your Stomach and How to Do It

If you've always slept soundly on your stomach, but you're concerned that some of the aches and pains or other issues you're dealing with might be related to it, it may be time to make over your sleep habits. While not everyone will experience discomfort from sleeping on their stomach - and this position can even be helpful for some, like those with sleep apnea - it can exacerbate neck and back pain if you're prone to it. After all, in order for you to breathe, you have to turn your head, which rotates and places pressure on the vertebrae in the neck.

"This stretches the neck muscles which can cause a stiff neck, neck pain, or headaches. It can also cause increased pressure along the nerves that exit the spine, causing numbness or tingling that radiates down the neck and into the hands," Erin Nance, MD, an orthopedic surgeon in New York City, told POPSUGAR. "Additionally, when you sleep on your stomach, your body can sag into the mattress, causing an increase in the concavity of the lower back, placing increased pressure across the joints of the lumbar spine."

Sleeping with your face buried in a pillow can also cause breakouts, as dirt, oil, and grease from your pillow and hair can clog your pores. "It's not bad for your skin in general to sleep on your stomach, but for some people who are acne prone, it may make breakouts more likely if they're not careful," Rajani Katta, MD, a dermatologist and clinical professor of dermatology at the University of Texas McGovern Medical School in Houston, told POPSUGAR. "I've seen issues from haircare products, especially oils and serums, being transferred from bangs to forehead and triggering acne outbreaks. Regularly washing your pillowcases, especially if you use hairstyling products and don't shower before bed, is also important, as is fully removing your makeup before dozing off."

If you're experiencing either of these issues, and think the best solution is to retrain yourself to sleep in a different position, Dr. Nance advises transitioning first to your side, tucking pillows between your legs and arms to help break the habit. If sleeping on your stomach really is the most comfortable option for you, you can take steps to protect your neck and back. "The key is to have a supportive mattress and avoid placing the spine in an unsupported, hyperflexed, or extended position," Dr. Nance said. "Do not sleep with a pillow that is too large and will force your neck into too much flexion."

I Became Healthier and More Confident in 2019 by Simply Practicing Self-Care

I ended 2018 in a relatively dark place. I didn't have a job lined up after college and, quite frankly, wasn't sure I wanted one in my field. While my friends had plans to move towns, states, and even countries away, I was sure I'd end up back at home. Then there was the self-loathing I had battled since middle school: my skin wasn't clear enough, my teeth weren't white enough, and my waist wasn't small enough. I was exhausted, self-conscious, and constantly comparing myself to others.

When it was time to make my new year's resolution, I knew I would only be happy if I learned to accept and love myself as I was, instead of trying to change the things I didn't like. So, for the first few months of 2019, I committed to practicing self-care every single day. It seemed like a wise first step: making time for myself, even if it were only for a few minutes here and there. I started painting my nails, doing hair and face masks, or taking five minutes to stretch. Sometimes I'd just lay in bed and snuggle my cat. And though I knew it would be a long, difficult journey, I tried to stop focusing so much on other people's opinions of me and my choices.

Once I did, I realized that I had a lot of anxiety centered around pleasing other people. When I started listening to what I needed instead of trying to predict what others might need from me or think of me, it was amazing how things began to change. Yes, some of my relationships suffered, but others grew stronger, including the one with myself. Making choices based on what I wanted my life to look like paid off in other ways, too. I landed that first job after all, which eliminated a significant source of stress heading into graduation. About halfway through the year, I felt I was strong enough to start addressing my issues with body confidence.

I knew for a long time that the food I was eating and lack of exercise I was getting only led me to feel more lethargic and uncomfortable in my own skin. I decided a part of loving myself was also treating my body well, so I searched for a workout program that I would enjoy and began eating foods that made my body feel good and energized. That became my most important form of self-care. I prioritized myself for a minimum of 30 minutes a day, and while my body only changed a little bit, I felt different from the inside out. Suddenly I was fitter, more energized, and less stressed.

On a near-daily basis, I simply decided that I was enough, and then I moved on.

In the process, I did my best to let go of that self-hatred. It's really difficult not to look at yourself in a mirror and immediately start picking yourself apart, but I forced myself to do exactly that. On a near-daily basis, I simply decided that I was enough, and then I moved on.

With the year coming to an end, I'm still working to overcome my insecurities and listen to my own voice over everyone else's. It takes time, and it's a choice I have to make over and over again, but I've come a long way since I first set out to just take care of myself for a few minutes every day. My resolution for 2020 is to continue on this path of self-acceptance - and never look back.

Blue Ivy Looks Just Like Beyoncé in Their Cute New Year's Photo with Megan Thee Stallion

Megan Thee Stallion is coming even hotter for 2020. The "Hot Girl Summer" rapper posted a photo with Beyoncé Knowles and Blue Ivy Carter on her Instagram and Twitter accounts with the caption "Happy 2020," and fans are buzzing if there's a new track in the works.

Megan recently signed a management deal with JAY-Z's record label, Roc Nation, in September 2019, so it makes a lot of sense why the Houston-native rapper was cozying up with Beyoncé and Blue Ivy Carter. In the spirit of Beyoncé's hint-heavy creative process, we also can't help speculating that the Houston hotties are going to be dropping a banging new track for 2020 - fingers crossed.

On another note, how much is Blue Ivy Carter growing into her mama's little twin? We can't get enough of how much little Blue resembles Beyoncé, especially in this new photo with baby Blue rocking a big girl silk dress. Have a closer look at the epic photo-booth snap with Beyoncé Knowles, Megan Thee Stallion, and Blue Ivy Carter ahead.

This Guy Made a Hilarious Video Showing What Moms Are Like, and It Is Spot Freakin' On

Moms

Posted by Trey Kennedy on Friday, December 21, 2018

Trey Kennedy, a comedian with a knack for creating hilarious videos, recently did a spoof on what moms are actually like that will make both kids and parents chuckle. He shared the clip - which is appropriately titled "Moms"- on his Facebook page, and it instantly went viral. After opening with how his nonexistent kids need to somehow pull their grades up from an 89 average, he dove into some of our favorite mom-isms of all time. He touched on everything from how obsessed moms are with Hoda Kotb to how men "can never find anything" to how getting water outside the bathtub can send some mamas over the edge. And the screaming into the phone bit? I absolutely lost it. You just gotta love moms!

I May Have Lost My Old Self in Motherhood, but I Found the Person I Was Meant to Be

I often hear other moms in my circle say: "I lost myself when I became a mother." Hell, I've said it myself. I think it's something we say so often that we forget exactly what it means. Daily, mothers are brushed aside when they proclaim they've lost themselves, but when you're in the thick of it, unsure of where you go from here, it feels desperately lonely. Losing your identity isn't like losing your keys or misplacing your wallet. It's frightening. It's life altering. And while I am a woman who lost her identity in motherhood, I'd do it all over again. Because there's something magical that comes from finding the new you after your children are born.

When my second child was born, I decided to stay home. I was a full-time educator at that point, and the decision didn't come lightly. My mother was just diagnosed with cancer and with a new baby, it seemed like the time in my life where I needed to put myself on hold to care for others. At first, I relished in my new role. I tried my best to be the ideal stay-at-home mom - we did Pinterest crafts, went to story time, and joined a local moms' group. But while I continued to dive deeper into this new role, my identity became buried.

Sadness made its way into my heart. But another, more surprising feeling overcame me - fear. I felt the urge to do something, make a change for myself. I wanted to write, to go to graduate school again, to teach, or to start a new career all together. But I was paralyzed by fear. I was afraid of digging up the old me. I worried she wouldn't even be there. But what I didn't realize is I didn't have to dig her up. I could create a new and different me all together.

Related: I May Be a Mom - but I'm Also So Much More

When you become a mother, you do lose a part of your old self. It's unavoidable. Your life changes, and so does your heart, and that's okay. Over time, I learned that part of the adventure of motherhood is the ability to redefine yourself. And after you do that, you'll realize just how lovely (though not easy) the journey is.

After I stopped letting fear control me, I started to break free. Folding tiny onesies and emptying the dishwasher began to break me - I desperately needed a break from mundane but necessary tasks. So I finally enrolled in grad school and my mind became invigorated again. My brain craved the challenge and I was surprised and delighted to see just how much I needed that.

I also began to dabble with writing. The idea of my words being published terrified me. But I listened to the tiny voice that told me to do it, the tiny voice that knew it was a good idea. I began submitting my work to publications and something wild happened; as people began reading my words about motherhood, they began reaching out to thank me for writing. My writing began helping other mothers. It felt like magic. By pushing my fear aside, I began to get reacquainted with myself again. And discovering the new me was like falling in love all over again . . . only better.

Today, both of my children are in school and I'm both a writer and writing instructor. I've dug up parts of me that I initially lost when becoming a mother and built some new parts as well. And I'm so happy with the new me I've found. If you're struggling with your identity as a new mom, please know that it happens to many mothers in some way or another. You're not alone. But while losing yourself in motherhood is common, it's still a big deal. Don't let anyone belittle that. Listen to your tiny voice - and instead of digging yourself out of a hole, you'll create a new identity that you never knew was in there.

2020's Take on Last Year's Biggest Haircut Trend: The "Soft Blunt" Bob

Bob haircuts were to 2019 what Juicy Couture tracksuits were to 2001: abso-f*cking-lutely everywhere. Within the last 365 days, we saw cuts that were blunt! Shaggy! A-line or inverted! Diffuse-dried, flipped-under, and styled in every which way imaginable. (Celebrity hairstylist David Lopez summed up the trend's versatility perfectly: "Many, many bobs happened in 2019.") Still, like most things in life, there's plenty of room for growth - and the style is going to look slightly different in 2020.

"Shorter lengths will continue to reign with softer edges and more movement, but this year bob haircuts will become softer and a little more grown out," he said. "I like to call it the 'soft blunt' bob, where the perimeter of the haircut looks thick but is slightly piece-y."

If you're looking for some variation in the new year (and, if you liked any of the 1,298 takes on the trend, why wouldn't you be?) you're going to want to check out these cute-as-hell soft blunt bob haircuts, below.

Call Your Stylist: These Are the Biggest Haircut Trends About to Blow Up in 2020

Of all the things you might "cut" from your life in the new year - certain foods, old mindsets, that god-awful ex - your hair often feels like the least dramatic, perhaps most cathartic clean break you can make. (Unless, of course, your ex happened to be awful and clingy, in which case: snip snip.) In truth, there's nothing like stepping into January with a fresh new haircut that makes subzero temperatures and overcrowded yoga classes seem somewhat more bearable.

The good news about trends in 2020 is that there's plenty of room for personalization. "These days, haircuts are becoming more and more tailored to your face shape, natural texture, and lifestyle," said David Lopez, celebrity hairstylist to the likes of Ashley Graham and Hailey Baldwin. "Overall, people are wanting styles that are easy to wear and also make their hair look thick. And because we've seen so many people experiment with vibrant hair colors, it's inspired a slew of people to become more experimental and adventurous with their haircuts."

If that doesn't already sound like the "you do you" mantra you'd like to cling to in the new year, allow Lopez to break down the biggest haircut trends you're about to see blow up your Instagram feed in 2020 ahead. You won't want to shed these ones, we promise.

Tan France's taste in fashion translates directly to his taste in home decor, and he clearly spared no expense when it came to creating his dream closet - it takes up the entire top floor of his house! In a video made for Architectural Digest, Tan gave a tour of his Salt Lake City home, and the closet - which features countless shelves for shoes and a huge mirror wall - is by far the showstopper. The Monterey Five Made a Comeback at Zoë Kravitz's Paris Wedding

Zoë Kravitz and Karl Glusman celebrated their marriage with a formal ceremony in Paris on June 29, and on Tuesday, the High Fidelity actress shared an intimate series of photos on Instagram to commemorate the event. After officially tying the knot in May, the couple - who met through mutual friends in 2016 - was joined by friends and family at the home of Zoë's father, Lenny, where they said their vows. The black and white photos show Lenny, Zoë's mother, Lisa Bonet, and her husband, Jason Momoa - along with Zoë's siblings, Lola and Nakoa-Wolf - supporting the bride at the top of a staircase before she made her way down to the groom.

Zoë channeled Audrey Hepburn in a sweet, tea-length white dress, kitten heels, and a bow headband. She posed with her Big Little Lies costars Reese Witherspoon, Laura Dern, Nicole Kidman, and Shailene Woodley, and other celebrity guests at the event included Alicia Keys, Chris Pine, Denzel Washington, and Cara Delevingne. Before the official ceremony, Zoë, Karl, and their loved ones got together for a rehearsal dinner at Laperouse restaurant.
