Should You Call Your Doctor If You Need Emergency Contraception? It Depends
Emergency contraception can help prevent pregnancy when your birth control fails (whether the condom breaks or you forget a pill or two), but whether you need to see a doctor first depends on the type you choose. While emergency contraception is often referred to as the morning-after pill, there are actually two different medications you can choose from - one that requires a prescription and one that does not - and the most effective form of birth control when you're in a pinch isn't a pill at all, but a copper IUD.
Here, I'll explain exactly how each method works and why you might choose one over the other. Just remember, no form of emergency contraception can help prevent STIs, so if you've had unprotected sex and you're concerned about your risk, make an appointment to get screened.
1. Progestin-Only Emergency Contraceptive Pill
Known commercially as Plan B, Next Choice One Dose, and other brand names, the progestin-only pill comes in a single 1.5mg dose or two doses of 0.75mg. The active ingredient, levonorgestrel, works by delaying ovulation and thickening the cervical mucus to act as a barrier to sperm.
Why you might try it: The progestin-only morning-after pill can be purchased without a prescription or an appointment with your doctor. There are also very few restrictions for use: you can take the pill along with other birth control, for example, and even use it more than once in the same month.
What you should know: Progestin-only pills are most effective when taken within three days of unprotected sex, and they may not work as well for people with a body mass index (BMI) over 26. While it's safe to start a combined estrogen-progestin pill immediately after taking this form of emergency contraception, you shouldn't rely on it to prevent pregnancy for at least seven days.
2. Ulipristal Acetate Emergency Contraceptive Pill
UPA is most commonly sold under the brand name Ella, and it works a bit differently from the progestin-only pill, by delaying ovulation even after the brain has signaled the ovary to release an egg.
Why you might try it: Because of the progestin-blocking mechanism that helps prevent ovulation even after that signal is sent, UPA is more effective five days after unprotected sex. It's also more effective closer to ovulation and in people with a higher BMI.
What you should know: Unlike the progestin-only pill, you do need a prescription to get UPA and may even need to visit your healthcare provider. Not all pharmacies carry emergency contraception, so the sooner you reach out to your doctor, the better. You'll also need to wait five days before starting or continuing any type of hormonal contraception, as taking birth control can prevent UPA from working as effectively. (Nonhormonal methods are fine!) Additionally, you can only take UPA once per cycle, and people with severe asthma or liver disease should avoid it.
3. Copper IUD
The copper IUD is the only intrauterine device that can serve as emergency contraception, as it begins working to prevent pregnancy immediately. It essentially works as a spermicide, killing sperm before it can fertilize an egg.
Why you might try it: The copper IUD is the most effective form of emergency contraception. It works best if it's inserted within five days of unprotected sex, but your doctor may be able to place it later than that, as long as they can estimate that it's within five days of ovulation.
What you should know: You'll obviously need to see a doctor to get an IUD. Insertion can be crampy and painful, and the copper IUD may cause irregular bleeding.
4. Combination Pills
Certain types of standard birth control pills - which contain a combination of estrogen and progestin - can be used as emergency contraception, by mimicking the effects of the progestin-only pill. The key is finding the appropriate dose.
Why you might try it: If the birth control you're on is among the medications included in this chart from Princeton, taking the listed dosage can help prevent pregnancy, while allowing you to conveniently avoid a trip to the doctor's office or pharmacy.
What you should know: Taking high doses of combined oral contraceptives - and more specifically, estrogen - can increase your risk for disorders like blood clots in the legs and lungs, and cause side effects like nausea, vomiting, and headaches. It's important to consult your doctor before taking a higher dose to ensure it's safe, given your medical history.

I Never Knew That Motherhood Would Make It Nearly Impossible to Sleep Deeply
The other morning when my husband woke up, he was surprised to find our 4-year-old in bed with us. "I didn't know you got in our bed last night buddy!" He happily exclaimed. I had to suppress the urge to launch my pillow at his face. I had been tossing and turning (and dodging little arms to the face) all night, whereas my husband generally has the magical ability to sleep through the chaos of kids' night waking. The reality is, I don't think I've slept deeply for over twelve years - since before my first child was born. Why didn't anyone tell me that motherhood would turn me into an ultra-light sleeper?
Since having my first child, I wake to every creak and movement around me. Sometimes, I even wake to "phantom crying" or in anticipation of my child waking. It's maddening, and apparently I'm not alone. According to The Guardian, "Oxytocin, the 'cuddle hormone' has been found to amplify the cries of baby mice in the brains of mothers and could explain increased sensitivity in human parents." It certainly has done that for me. There have been countless times where I have heard our babies crying from the other room and my husband has been clueless.
The restless sleep began for me pretty much the moment I became a mother. I remember being in the hospital that first night with my new baby, exhausted and physically depleted in a way that I had never experienced before while simultaneously feeling an all-encompassing sense of purpose and determination. It was my "job" to feed and care for this new little human and I needed to be alert to him at all times.
This awareness only increased upon leaving the hospital because now my husband and I were on our own, with no doctors or nurses to guide us. Those first few months it was tempting for me to simply watch my newborn sleep, and place my ear next to his mouth to make sure I could hear him breathing rather than to fall into a deep sleep. Sleeping felt vulnerable, and very precarious because it seemed that more often than not the moment I would fall asleep my baby would start to cry.
The inability to sleep deeply did not dissipate as my children grew older. I was able to sleep for longer periods, but I found that I would wake to every noise around me. My sister-in-law put it best when she warned me, "You will never sleep as deeply as you did before you had kids." That was when I realized that this new affliction wasn't going to go away just because I didn't have a baby anymore.
Motherhood has made me softer in some areas, and stronger in others. I am more sensitive to children crying now, not in an annoyed way, but rather I want to run to the child to help. My mama-bear side has come out as well; I feel as though I could transform into Wonder Woman and do some serious damage to anyone who tries to harm my offspring. So yes, being a mom has dramatically affected my ability to sleep soundly, but it has given me so much more. I am able to comfort my child when they are scared, have an instinctual feeling when something is wrong, and demonstrate strength that I didn't even know I possess.
Maybe someday my body will remember to sleep soundly again, but it seems more likely that I will continue to lose sleep worrying about my children no matter how old they are. I never knew I would be making this sacrifice when I became a mother, but it's one I have learned to embrace.

Experts Explain Why You Might Want to Stop Sleeping on Your Stomach and How to Do It
If you've always slept soundly on your stomach, but you're concerned that some of the aches and pains or other issues you're dealing with might be related to it, it may be time to make over your sleep habits. While not everyone will experience discomfort from sleeping on their stomach - and this position can even be helpful for some, like those with sleep apnea - it can exacerbate neck and back pain if you're prone to it. After all, in order for you to breathe, you have to turn your head, which rotates and places pressure on the vertebrae in the neck.
"This stretches the neck muscles which can cause a stiff neck, neck pain, or headaches. It can also cause increased pressure along the nerves that exit the spine, causing numbness or tingling that radiates down the neck and into the hands," Erin Nance, MD, an orthopedic surgeon in New York City, told POPSUGAR. "Additionally, when you sleep on your stomach, your body can sag into the mattress, causing an increase in the concavity of the lower back, placing increased pressure across the joints of the lumbar spine."
Sleeping with your face buried in a pillow can also cause breakouts, as dirt, oil, and grease from your pillow and hair can clog your pores. "It's not bad for your skin in general to sleep on your stomach, but for some people who are acne prone, it may make breakouts more likely if they're not careful," Rajani Katta, MD, a dermatologist and clinical professor of dermatology at the University of Texas McGovern Medical School in Houston, told POPSUGAR. "I've seen issues from haircare products, especially oils and serums, being transferred from bangs to forehead and triggering acne outbreaks. Regularly washing your pillowcases, especially if you use hairstyling products and don't shower before bed, is also important, as is fully removing your makeup before dozing off."
If you're experiencing either of these issues, and think the best solution is to retrain yourself to sleep in a different position, Dr. Nance advises transitioning first to your side, tucking pillows between your legs and arms to help break the habit. If sleeping on your stomach really is the most comfortable option for you, you can take steps to protect your neck and back. "The key is to have a supportive mattress and avoid placing the spine in an unsupported, hyperflexed, or extended position," Dr. Nance said. "Do not sleep with a pillow that is too large and will force your neck into too much flexion."
I Became Healthier and More Confident in 2019 by Simply Practicing Self-Care
I ended 2018 in a relatively dark place. I didn't have a job lined up after college and, quite frankly, wasn't sure I wanted one in my field. While my friends had plans to move towns, states, and even countries away, I was sure I'd end up back at home. Then there was the self-loathing I had battled since middle school: my skin wasn't clear enough, my teeth weren't white enough, and my waist wasn't small enough. I was exhausted, self-conscious, and constantly comparing myself to others.
When it was time to make my new year's resolution, I knew I would only be happy if I learned to accept and love myself as I was, instead of trying to change the things I didn't like. So, for the first few months of 2019, I committed to practicing self-care every single day. It seemed like a wise first step: making time for myself, even if it were only for a few minutes here and there. I started painting my nails, doing hair and face masks, or taking five minutes to stretch. Sometimes I'd just lay in bed and snuggle my cat. And though I knew it would be a long, difficult journey, I tried to stop focusing so much on other people's opinions of me and my choices.
Once I did, I realized that I had a lot of anxiety centered around pleasing other people. When I started listening to what I needed instead of trying to predict what others might need from me or think of me, it was amazing how things began to change. Yes, some of my relationships suffered, but others grew stronger, including the one with myself. Making choices based on what I wanted my life to look like paid off in other ways, too. I landed that first job after all, which eliminated a significant source of stress heading into graduation. About halfway through the year, I felt I was strong enough to start addressing my issues with body confidence.
I knew for a long time that the food I was eating and lack of exercise I was getting only led me to feel more lethargic and uncomfortable in my own skin. I decided a part of loving myself was also treating my body well, so I searched for a workout program that I would enjoy and began eating foods that made my body feel good and energized. That became my most important form of self-care. I prioritized myself for a minimum of 30 minutes a day, and while my body only changed a little bit, I felt different from the inside out. Suddenly I was fitter, more energized, and less stressed.
On a near-daily basis, I simply decided that I was enough, and then I moved on.
In the process, I did my best to let go of that self-hatred. It's really difficult not to look at yourself in a mirror and immediately start picking yourself apart, but I forced myself to do exactly that. On a near-daily basis, I simply decided that I was enough, and then I moved on.
With the year coming to an end, I'm still working to overcome my insecurities and listen to my own voice over everyone else's. It takes time, and it's a choice I have to make over and over again, but I've come a long way since I first set out to just take care of myself for a few minutes every day. My resolution for 2020 is to continue on this path of self-acceptance - and never look back.

Blue Ivy Looks Just Like Beyoncé in Their Cute New Year's Photo with Megan Thee Stallion
Megan Thee Stallion is coming even hotter for 2020. The "Hot Girl Summer" rapper posted a photo with Beyoncé Knowles and Blue Ivy Carter on her Instagram and Twitter accounts with the caption "Happy 2020," and fans are buzzing if there's a new track in the works.
Megan recently signed a management deal with JAY-Z's record label, Roc Nation, in September 2019, so it makes a lot of sense why the Houston-native rapper was cozying up with Beyoncé and Blue Ivy Carter. In the spirit of Beyoncé's hint-heavy creative process, we also can't help speculating that the Houston hotties are going to be dropping a banging new track for 2020 - fingers crossed.
On another note, how much is Blue Ivy Carter growing into her mama's little twin? We can't get enough of how much little Blue resembles Beyoncé, especially in this new photo with baby Blue rocking a big girl silk dress. Have a closer look at the epic photo-booth snap with Beyoncé Knowles, Megan Thee Stallion, and Blue Ivy Carter ahead.

This Guy Made a Hilarious Video Showing What Moms Are Like, and It Is Spot Freakin' On
MomsMoms
Posted by Trey Kennedy on Friday, December 21, 2018
Trey Kennedy, a comedian with a knack for creating hilarious videos, recently did a spoof on what moms are actually like that will make both kids and parents chuckle. He shared the clip - which is appropriately titled "Moms"- on his Facebook page, and it instantly went viral. After opening with how his nonexistent kids need to somehow pull their grades up from an 89 average, he dove into some of our favorite mom-isms of all time. He touched on everything from how obsessed moms are with Hoda Kotb to how men "can never find anything" to how getting water outside the bathtub can send some mamas over the edge. And the screaming into the phone bit? I absolutely lost it. You just gotta love moms!
