Should You Run Before You Lift?
If you ask 100 people if you should do cardio before or after strength training, chances are that you'll get an even split of answers. The surprising part of each answer, however, is that you'll get about 100 different reasons why you should or shouldn't do cardio first. Let's cut through the myths and misconceptions and give you the answers you need to build your best body!
A study published in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research discovered something very shocking: it doesn't really make a difference if you do cardio before or after training. Whether you're lifting weights or getting sweaty on a cardio machine, the same hormones spike. Also, you won't really notice much of a difference in your performance either way.
Even though the study was rather clear about the findings, opinions still vary. According to fitness coach Anthony J. Yeung, CSCS, "It's always better to do your strength training before cardio because you want to do your heavier stuff when your body is fresh. If you did it the other way, your body would get tired so you wouldn't be able to lift as much weight and your technique would worsen."
Diana Chaloux, CPT and owner of the online personal training website HitchFit.com, indicates that, "If your goal is fat loss, the ideal situation would be to perform strength training first, followed by cardiovascular training." She explains that "when you strength train, your body utilizes glycogen (which is stored carbohydrates) for fuel, so if you strength train first, and then do cardio immediately after (which prefers fat for fuel for lower intensity cardio), you would create an environment in your body conducive to fat metabolism."
What about morning cardio, you may ask? Well, research published by the British Journal of Nutrition found that people can burn up to 20 percent more body fat by running in the morning on an empty stomach. What does this mean for you? Some experts advise breaking up your training efforts to do cardio in the morning on an empty stomach and then weights later on in the day with a pre-workout protein-based snack.
What does this mean for you? You've got options - and there's never anything wrong with that! Our advice? If you can split your training efforts into two separate workouts, hit the gym on an empty stomach in the morning and do your cardio (and lift weights later in the day in a different session). If you can't go to the gym twice in one day, make the most of your single session by hitting the weights first then doing your cardio. This way you can do the heavy stuff when you are at your optimum energy levels.
Cardio and Strength Training Join Forces in This Intense 15-Minute Bodyweight Workout
When you only have 15 minutes to whip up a workout, and you don't have time to drive to the gym or get out equipment, do this bodyweight workout. It may be short, but saying it's intense is an understatement!
This workout involves basic bodyweight cardio moves. For the first exercise, Jade Jenny, head CrossFit coach and owner of Champlain Valley CrossFit, said to use a line on your floor as something visual to jump over. You could even roll up a small towel or use a water bottle or sneaker to inspire you to jump higher.
For the squat thrusts, there's technically no jump at the end when you stand up, but you can always throw one in to make it harder. You can also add a push-up after jumping your feet back to plank. Heck, if you'd rather do full-on burpees instead, no one will tell you not to. Now let's get moving and have fun!

Servant Season 2 Is a Lock, But When Will We Get the New Episodes?
Horror fans, rejoice: Apple has renewed psychological thriller Servant for a second season. The announcement actually came in advance of the show's premiere on Nov. 28, when the first three episodes dropped on Apple TV+. But when will we get this new batch?
The latest project from producer M. Night Shyamalan, the series centers around Sean and Dorothy Turner, a Philadelphia couple struggling with the loss of their baby, Jericho, at just 13 weeks old. The two cope with Jericho's death in very different ways, to say the least. While Sean (Toby Kebbell) does his best to press on, Dorothy (Lauren Ambrose) is so overcome with grief that the family offers her a lifelike doll to help ease her pain. The experiment backfires when a delusional Dorothy clings to the toy and goes so far as to hire a young nanny, Leanne Grayson (Nell Tiger Free), to help with the baby after Dorothy returns to work.
As you might expect from a Shyamalan venture, the Nanny Leanne is both really creepy and highly mysterious, and her arrival coincides with a number of supernatural happenings in the Turner household. Viewers follow Sean and his brother, Julian (Rupert Grint), as they do their best to uncover the truth behind Leanne and her past. Although episodes are just 30 minutes long, each packs a chilling punch from start to finish.
Shyamalan says he has a long-term vision for the show and a rough idea of how the Turners' story will play out. "I know the end point," he told The Hollywood Reporter in November. "We're moving through the episodes and thinking about them that way as we're going through. A dream version is we get 60 episodes, and I get to tell you the full story through 60."
There is plenty of time to catch up, as season two isn't expected to arrive until late 2020. You can check out the first eight episodes of season one now on Apple TV+, and the remaining two chapters become available on Fridays at 3 a.m. Eastern.

Here's What Day Black Panther Will Finally Be Available to Stream on Disney Plus
Disney+ has given us everything we could ask for in a streaming platform, from classic animations to beloved Pixar movies. Almost all of the Marvel Universe films are available to stream as well, but one important superhero movie still seems to be missing for our viewing pleasure: Black Panther. Luckily, we have an answer about its whereabouts, and it's both good and bad.
The good news is Disney has announced that Black Panther will be available to stream. The bad news is we'll have to wait until March 4. Disney+ teases us a bit on its platform because when you search for the movie, it does pop up and looks available to stream. But instead of a play button, there's a message on the webpage that says it's unavailable due to existing agreements (probably with Netflix, where it is currently streaming).
You can add the movie to your watchlist so that once it becomes available, it will show up on your homepage. And given Black Panther's mega-success when it was released in 2018, we can only assume its popularity will continue among the millions of Disney+ subscribers. The story follows young king T'Challa who is challenged with saving his homeland of Wakanda from a ruthless enemy. The film became a cultural phenomenon and marked a major milestone in Hollywood, featuring a predominantly Black cast. It's the first blockbuster superhero film of its kind for Marvel and a positive sign that people of diverse identities are making their lasting mark on film media.
For those really in need of a Marvel Studios binge session, there are still a lot of options. Should You Call Your Doctor If You Need Emergency Contraception? It Depends
Emergency contraception can help prevent pregnancy when your birth control fails (whether the condom breaks or you forget a pill or two), but whether you need to see a doctor first depends on the type you choose. While emergency contraception is often referred to as the morning-after pill, there are actually two different medications you can choose from - one that requires a prescription and one that does not - and the most effective form of birth control when you're in a pinch isn't a pill at all, but a copper IUD.
Here, I'll explain exactly how each method works and why you might choose one over the other. Just remember, no form of emergency contraception can help prevent STIs, so if you've had unprotected sex and you're concerned about your risk, make an appointment to get screened.
1. Progestin-Only Emergency Contraceptive Pill
Known commercially as Plan B, Next Choice One Dose, and other brand names, the progestin-only pill comes in a single 1.5mg dose or two doses of 0.75mg. The active ingredient, levonorgestrel, works by delaying ovulation and thickening the cervical mucus to act as a barrier to sperm.
Why you might try it: The progestin-only morning-after pill can be purchased without a prescription or an appointment with your doctor. There are also very few restrictions for use: you can take the pill along with other birth control, for example, and even use it more than once in the same month.
What you should know: Progestin-only pills are most effective when taken within three days of unprotected sex, and they may not work as well for people with a body mass index (BMI) over 26. While it's safe to start a combined estrogen-progestin pill immediately after taking this form of emergency contraception, you shouldn't rely on it to prevent pregnancy for at least seven days.
2. Ulipristal Acetate Emergency Contraceptive Pill
UPA is most commonly sold under the brand name Ella, and it works a bit differently from the progestin-only pill, by delaying ovulation even after the brain has signaled the ovary to release an egg.
Why you might try it: Because of the progestin-blocking mechanism that helps prevent ovulation even after that signal is sent, UPA is more effective five days after unprotected sex. It's also more effective closer to ovulation and in people with a higher BMI.
What you should know: Unlike the progestin-only pill, you do need a prescription to get UPA and may even need to visit your healthcare provider. Not all pharmacies carry emergency contraception, so the sooner you reach out to your doctor, the better. You'll also need to wait five days before starting or continuing any type of hormonal contraception, as taking birth control can prevent UPA from working as effectively. (Nonhormonal methods are fine!) Additionally, you can only take UPA once per cycle, and people with severe asthma or liver disease should avoid it.
3. Copper IUD
The copper IUD is the only intrauterine device that can serve as emergency contraception, as it begins working to prevent pregnancy immediately. It essentially works as a spermicide, killing sperm before it can fertilize an egg.
Why you might try it: The copper IUD is the most effective form of emergency contraception. It works best if it's inserted within five days of unprotected sex, but your doctor may be able to place it later than that, as long as they can estimate that it's within five days of ovulation.
What you should know: You'll obviously need to see a doctor to get an IUD. Insertion can be crampy and painful, and the copper IUD may cause irregular bleeding.
4. Combination Pills
Certain types of standard birth control pills - which contain a combination of estrogen and progestin - can be used as emergency contraception, by mimicking the effects of the progestin-only pill. The key is finding the appropriate dose.
Why you might try it: If the birth control you're on is among the medications included in this chart from Princeton, taking the listed dosage can help prevent pregnancy, while allowing you to conveniently avoid a trip to the doctor's office or pharmacy.
What you should know: Taking high doses of combined oral contraceptives - and more specifically, estrogen - can increase your risk for disorders like blood clots in the legs and lungs, and cause side effects like nausea, vomiting, and headaches. It's important to consult your doctor before taking a higher dose to ensure it's safe, given your medical history.
Losing My Son to Stillbirth Opened My Eyes to a Community I Didn’t Know I Had
I was 24 weeks and six days pregnant when I heard the words that no parent ever wants to hear: "I'm sorry, there's no heartbeat." I'd known something was wrong, deep down, but hadn't wanted to entertain any ideas of what it might be. When the doctor couldn't find a heartbeat using the fetal doppler, we went in for an emergency ultrasound. And there we saw our son's tiny body, completely still.
I'd been sending updates in a group text to some of my friends. I'd started the thread the day before when I'd stayed home from work because I was feeling off. The girls, almost all of them mothers, sent encouraging messages to listen to my maternal instincts, that they were praying for me, or asking how I was doing emotionally. One of them even offered to come to the ultrasound if my husband wasn't able to get away from the office.
When I told them that my baby no longer had a heartbeat and that I was going to be induced that evening, they didn't hesitate. I don't know what I was expecting when I sent them the message, but they did so much more than I expected anyone to do for a friend, especially when they all had young children or jobs or both.
One of the women arrived at my door with smoothies to make sure I had something in my stomach before delivery. Then, she drove us to the hospital and stayed with us until I was moved into a delivery suite. While I was in labor, the group pooled their resources and filled my house with groceries and maxi-pads. Over the past year, they've checked in regularly via texts or phone calls, with invites for coffee dates (where they've sobbed with me in public), and left meals and care packages on my porch. They even had a sculpture made of our family for us, with two angel babies – one babe lost to miscarriage and the second to stillbirth.
In those months after my son died, the food my friends supplied kept us from starving. The grocery store was a painful place – there were pregnant bellies and babies everywhere – and I cried at the sight of each of them. In the year since, the constant flow of messages from these women checking in to see how I'm doing or sharing an Instagram post from another loss mama, have helped me to know that even on my saddest days, I'm not alone. My arms may be the only empty ones in the group, but I am still loved. And I am still recognized as a mother.
Through all of it, even after they've added more babies to their families while I've struggled with infertility, these women still cry with me over my boy and still check in to see how I'm doing day to day. If I could have my son in my arms, I would. But losing him opened my eyes to the wonderful women in my life that, despite our differences and despite their own struggles, have committed themselves to lifting me up and loving me. I'm more grateful than they'll ever know.

Some of the many Marvel films currently available on Disney+ are Avengers: Endgame, Captain Marvel, Guardians of the Galaxy, and a bunch more. In the meantime, we'll continue watching the rest of Disney's catalogue and count down the days until Black Panther will be "Wakanda Forever" on Disney+.
