Don't Worry, Kate McKinnon, We'd Totally Freak Out Meeting Beyoncé, Too
Kate McKinnon had herself quite a weekend. Not only did she attend her first Golden Globes, but she also presented Ellen DeGeneres with the Carol Burnett Award for her outstanding contributions to television on or off the screen. You'd think presenting the award would be the most nerve-racking part of the evening for the Bombshell star, right? Well, that'd be true if she hadn't been seated at a table with Beyoncé and JAY-Z. On Tuesday, Kate sat down on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, where she praised the host for asking her to present the award and also explained their very star-studded table at the award show.
At Kate and Ellen's table was Kate's sister, Portia de Rossi, Carol Burnett, and Jay and Bey, whom Kate called "the King and Queen of America." Upon finding out they were sitting with the couple, Kate and her sister immediately panicked and made a list of what they could talk about. "We live in one-bedroom apartments in New York City, what can we say? 'Do you use HelloFresh? What kind of milk do you like to drink?'" she joked. And while her sister, Emily Lynne, had "balls of steel," Kate found herself anxiously pretending she had something on her pants. "I blew it," she said.
Kate meets just about every single celebrity on SNL, but she said it herself that they're "not Beyoncé. We all know she's different." Watch Kate talk about the hilarious moment on Ellen ahead, and see more from her big night at the Golden Globes.

3 Ways the British Royal Family Stays So Damn Rich
It might seem like we know the British royal family based on how public their lives are, but when you really think about it, how much do you really know about the lifestyles of the most famous family in England? While we do know what Prince William and Kate Middleton do when it comes to their jobs - like being a part of the Royal Air Force, in William's case - not many people know where the family's money and wealth actually comes from.
Spoiler alert: the bulk of the money that Queen Elizabeth II and her family have is inherited. What you might not know is how the family first received, and continue to receive, the bulk of that money. Essentially, there are three different ways in which the queen and her heirs make money every year and retain their wealthy status.
1. Private Income
For all intents and purposes, we're going to focus on how Queen Elizabeth II makes money, because technically it's the same formula for her descendants and her heirs. The queen has an undisclosed amount of earnings that come annually from "inherited private estates" including Balmoral Castle and other properties from her personal investment portfolio.
According to the royal family's website, this inheritance initially came from Her Majesty's father, King George VI, and also consists of a valuable artwork and stamp collection. Last year, her private income was estimated to be about £340 million ($490 million), according to a Sunday Times report in 2016.
When it comes to this area of her wealth, the queen does pay taxes on any income she privately makes from her different investments, but what she pays has always remained secret. These properties - unless she chooses to sell them - will most likely go to her descendants someday.
2. The Privy Purse
The Privy Purse isn't just a fancy British term for a handbag or money holder, although if you really think about it, that's sort of what it is - a holder of the set money that the queen receives during her time as monarch. The second form of royal income is all about The Duchy of Lancaster, which provides the Queen with a set income - so no work-related expenses like touring the country and making public appearances have to be paid with this, although some are - called the Privy Purse.
Simply put, The Duchy of Lancaster is a "portfolio of land and other assets that have been in the royal family for hundreds of years." As of early 2017, that compilation of land and property came to about 18,433 hectares. The Privy Purse is all of the income generated from those properties (about £17.8 million or $21.7 million for 2015-2016) and it has been around since 1399.
"Its main purpose is to provide an independent source of income, and is used mainly to pay for official expenditure not met by the Sovereign Grant (primarily to meet expenses incurred by other members of the Royal Family)," the official Royal Family website explains.
Side note: Prince Charles, who is currently next in line for the throne, runs his own estate (that again has properties that have been passed down and cannot be sold from back in 1337) called The Duchy of Cornwall. Charles currently resides over this money (like the queen does for The Duchy of Lancaster), and it is responsible for covering all of the personal, and most of the official expenses, for his family line, which would include Prince William and Harry. When Charles ascends the throne, Prince William will become the heir to The Duchy of Cornwall and it will continue to go down the line to the male heirs.
3. Sovereign Grant
Last but not least is the Sovereign Grant, which is handed out by the Treasury and is funded by taxpayer dollars (or pounds in the UK). This is where the majority of the British Royal Family's income hails from, and it's used to carry out the royal duties, cover royal travel, pay for the staff, and help maintain Buckingham Palace's upkeep.
In 1760, the Sovereign Grant was set up thanks to King George III, and it's basically an agreement that was made between Parliament and the Royal Family saying they would hand over all of the profits from the Crown Estate to the government in return for a percentage of the profits each year.
What is the Crown Estate, you ask? Well, according to BBC News, it's "an independent commercial property business and one of the largest property portfolios in the UK." It is made up of residential properties, businesses, shops, and more. Basically, it is everything that the Monarchy owns - for the duration of their reign - and the residents of the United Kingdom pay taxes on it, thanks to the government. How the Sovereign Grant works is this: The Crown (in this case the queen) owns the Crown Estate. That estate makes money, which in turn gets paid to the HM Treasury, who calculates what 15 percent of the surplus income is. That amount is then paid to the queen in the form of a Sovereign Grant and used for royal expenses. It's a mouthful, but it actually makes sense.
While living like a royal does sound great, knowing where the family's money comes from is much more complicated than we expected. But, at the end of the day, money is money, and the British royal family has a lot of it. Cheers!

My New Year's Resolution Is to Become a Morning Person, and Here's How I'm Doing It
When it comes to waking up earlier, my general motto is, no thanks. I'm so envious of those morning people, the ones that can just hop out of bed and get their day started while I hit snooze 57 times. It feels like they've had a full day before I get out of my pajamas, and this is the decade that I actually look forward to the morning. The first, and most obvious answer to becoming a morning person is getting a good night's sleep. When you do that, you feel more rested and less like you've been hit by a bus when your alarm goes off. However, once you've gotten some sleep, these 11 products will help start your day off on the right foot.
From simple journals to alarm clocks that wake you up with natural light and some home workout equipment, these products will help you feel energized and alive come morning. I've been trying these techniques all through January, and dare I say they've been working! Keep on reading to shop my picks.

I'm a Yoga Teacher, and This Is the One Pose I Do Every Day to Relieve Back Pain
We're all guilty of doing things during the day that contribute to neck, shoulder, and back pain, whether it's sitting for hours on end, slouching over a phone, or laying in an awkward position while watching Netflix. When you're feeling achy, sometimes the last thing you want to do is move, but there's one yoga pose that helps ease my lower back pain every time. Enough so that I do it just about every day.
I first practiced the legs up the wall pose about seven years ago, when I took my first yoga class. It quickly became my go-to move for the end of the class, when everyone gets into a resting (or Savasana) pose. I'd just move my mat to the wall. I loved how in tune with my breath I became when laying like this, and I still do the pose with one hand on my heart and one on my stomach, where I can feel every inhale and exhale. When I underwent 200 hours of training to become a yoga teacher myself, I learned just how beneficial this position is.
To do the pose, you simply lay on your back with your hips against the wall and your legs stretched out overhead. This position helps stretch the hamstrings and back of the legs, while allowing gravity to drain excess fluid from the lower body, which can reduce post-workout soreness and even swelling. (When I suffered a knee injury that lingered for what felt like months, legs up the wall helped ease the swelling every time.) Experts even believe it can help with period cramps, by relieving pressure in the hips and lower spine.
The best thing about this pose is that it requires very little flexibility and can easily be modified. While a wall or other structure to lean your legs against is encouraged, you can do the pose anywhere: lying on your bed, on a mat, on a towel, or on a padded floor at the gym - whatever feels best for your lower back and hips. You can bend your knees, if that's more comfortable, or bring the soles of your feet together and open your knees wide. Or, keep your legs straight and let them fall down the wall into a wide-legged pose. Place a blanket under your hips, if you find that helpful, or even over your chest if you're feeling anxious.
Once you're comfortable, close your eyes, relax your muscles, and let your breath rise and fall. You can stay in this pose as long as you like! Finish the stretch by bending your knees and letting them both fall to one side and then the other (called a spinal twist), before sitting up. I love to do this pose first thing in the morning to start my day or just before bed to help relax my muscles for sleep.

Meghan and Harry Are Officially Stepping Back as "Senior Members" of the Royal Family
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are stepping back as "senior members" of the royal family. Following their six-week break in Canada over the holidays, the royal couple made the announcement on their Sussex Royal website and official Instagram account on Wednesday.
"It is with your encouragement, particularly over the last few years, that we feel prepared to make this adjustment."
"After many months of reflection and internal discussions, we have chosen to make a transition this year in starting to carve out a progressive new role within this institution. We intend to step back as 'senior' members of the Royal Family, and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen," the statement read. "It is with your encouragement, particularly over the last few years, that we feel prepared to make this adjustment. We now plan to balance our time between the United Kingdom and North America, continuing to honour our duty to The Queen, the Commonwealth, and our patronages."
Meghan and Harry also added that the "geographic balance" between the UK and North America will enable them to raise their 8-month-old son, Archie Mountbatten-Windsor, and provide their family "with the space to focus on the next chapter, including the launch of our new charitable entity."
"We look forward to sharing the full details of this exciting next step in due course, as we continue to collaborate with Her Majesty The Queen, The Prince of Wales, The Duke of Cambridge, and all relevant parties," the statement continued. "Until then, please accept our deepest thanks for your continued support."
Shortly after Meghan and Harry's announcement, Buckingham Palace released a statement of its own, making it sound like the couple acted alone and the palace was left in the dark about their decision. "Discussions with The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are at an early stage," the statement read. "We understand their desire to take a different approach, but these are complicated issues that will take time to work through."
NEW: Statement from Buckingham Palace.

I'm Jealous of How Much My Son Loves His Nanny, but I Wouldn't Have It Any Other Way
The other day, I was standing in the kitchen chatting with my nanny when we heard my baby take a tumble in the playroom. He came in crying . . . and went right to the nanny for comfort. And I realized that my baby is likely more bonded to his nanny than he is to me and I felt horribly jealous. After I finished picking up the broken pieces of my heart, though, I came to the conclusion that maybe his preference for her is not such a bad thing.
My nanny joined our family when my son was eight months old. Following a cross-country move, I found myself in need of childcare for my baby and preschooler. Within a few weeks of posting on Care.com, I found exactly what I was looking for: a Spanish-speaking caregiver with lots of experience. Our interview confirmed my feelings about her, and when we met in person, she was gentle, firm, and loving with the children.
Both kids instantly took to her, but the baby fell head over tiny heels. In those first few months, I watched his face light up upon her arrival. If I was holding him, he would reach for her, then rest his head on her shoulder and sigh. He napped longer, ate better, and was generally more content when she was there. Once he passed the year mark and started walking and talking, he began toddling to the door as soon as he heard her car and saying her name more than "Mama."
At first, these experiences were nothing short of soul-crushing for me. I carried this child in my body for nine months. Why would he prefer another woman to his own mother? It wasn't like that with my daughter; I'd always been her special person. But logic and reason don't play well with raw emotion, so I had let myself feel my feelings and then take a step back to understand what was going on - and realize it was actually something positive.
I stayed home with my daughter until she was 18 months old, and she had me to herself that whole time. Because I went back to work sooner the second time around, my son has had more caregivers than she did. It's not too surprising that he favors the one who can give him her undivided attention. Even when I'm caring for the kids, I have laundry, meal prep, and all kinds of family management tasks on my plate.
I know it is absolutely essential for babies - for their development and long-term emotional health - to form secure attachments to the adults who take care of them. What I eventually came to terms with is that it's OK if it's with someone besides me. If I'm going to work, don't I want my children to be cared for by someone who loves them like her own? Absolutely.
I can get past my hurt feelings because I want and need to work. Work satisfies me in a way that motherhood alone does not, and that sense of fulfillment makes me a better, more engaged mom when I am on duty. That, and because I've opened myself to it, I've been able to pick up some tricks from my nanny that have helped me interact with my little one, like how stroking his head helps him fall asleep.
I won't pretend it doesn't still hurt when my baby chooses his nanny over me, but I'm better able to take it in stride. I have to remind myself that this is a situation that allows both of us to get something we need. He may spend the day loving on his nanny, but there are still plenty of hugs and kisses leftover for me. And when I put aside my jealousy, I'm better able to receive them.
