Not Finding Out Our Baby's Gender Was One of The Best Decisions We Ever Made
Before my daughter was even a thought, I assumed that when I got pregnant, I would find out the gender of the baby. Duh – it's the 21st century. We don't have to sit around waiting and wondering anymore. Plus, how else would I plan the nursery and registry or pick a name? To my surprise, when I did become pregnant, the thought of finding out if I was expecting a boy or girl stressed me out, so I decided to hold out on knowing exactly who was on the way for nine months.
The idea was first planted when my coworker revealed that she hadn't found out the gender of either of her kids. This shocked me. I didn't expect that people were still living this way in the 2010's. This nugget of information stayed tucked away until the news of my own pregnancy rallied my family around this idea that I would be bringing forth the family's first little boy. We already had two little girls on my husband's side of the family, and the household I grew up in was dominated by females. On both sides of the family, the chatter was around this little boy on the way, and an unrealistic feeling of pressure started mounting on my shoulders.
What was going to happen if the doctor told us we were having a girl? Would my husband feel let down? Would the rest of the family be less excited about yet another girl? Maybe it was those crazy pregnancy hormones that were driving these thoughts, but regardless, I didn't want there to be an ounce of disappointment around my pregnancy or birth, and there was no way anybody could be disappointed once the baby was here, boy or girl. We would be blessed to deliver a happy, healthy baby, and that's all that mattered to me. So I decided it would just be less anxiety-inducing to get through those nine months without knowing the gender. What I also didn't know was that this decision would bring me, a Type-A individual who lives life according to my planner, unexpected peace.
For months, my friends bombarded me with questions. "Aren't you dying to know? Isn't it driving you crazy that you don't know? How are you even preparing for this baby if you don't know if it's a boy or girl?" Contrary to popular belief, preparing for a baby whose gender you don't know is actually quite simple. My husband and I collaborated on a list of boy names and girl names. Our list of boy names was initially much more extensive, but we narrowed it down to three. As far as baby girl names went, there was only one we could agree on. Throughout my pregnancy, we affectionately referred to our bump as "Littlebit." Although we didn't know whether we were expecting Littlebit Baby Girl or Littlebit Baby Boy, we spoke to Littlebit every day, bonding and building excitement over whoever was going to make a debut.
We planned to turn our guest room into Littlebit's room. Our guest room was painted a deep orange color (stick with me here) that was the perfect backdrop for our gender-neutral jungle safari theme. There was no need for pink or blue - we instead turned to green, yellow, white, and gray to accentuate the zebras, giraffes, lions, and monkeys. It would be perfect for whomever arrived on delivery day.
Setting up our registry was easy: We registered for items in neutral colors or items that complemented our jungle safari theme. Our family threw us an amazing backyard coed baby shower. It was laid back, fun, and focused on celebrating our Littlebit. We were gifted unisex onesies, jungle themed stuffed animals and toys to match Littlebit's room, lots of yellow, green, and white towels and linens, and gift cards. We were inundated with love and with gifts, and the entire day created even more excitement and suspense as my due date quickly approached.
It was around 10:30 at night when my water broke and the countdown to meet Littlebit began. After a fiercely fast labor and delivery, Littlebit was here. As the doctor and nurses scrambled to clean up, stitch me up, and get up to leave the room, my husband and I basked in a life-altering surprise. We were now the parents of a baby GIRL! In that time after her birth, we were shocked that she was here, but in hindsight, I should have known that anyone coming three days late, then taking only 4 hours and 44 minutes to arrive would be a girl - she was determined to do life on her own dramatic terms! Before the prospect of motherhood, I had always envisioned myself as a "boy mom," but to this day, I could not see my life with anyone other than my Lucy Littlebit.
For anyone thinking about waiting to find out the gender - I say just do it! There aren't many true surprises in life anymore, and this one is truly priceless. Pregnancy, in all of its glory and discomfort, really does fly by, so before you know it, you will know whether you have a son or daughter. People love guessing the gender, and this helps build suspense and excitement. I've found that during pregnancy, people love contributing unsolicited advice and words of wisdom. If you don't know whether you're having a girl or boy, you'll cut out much of the noise people will sell you about "the drama of having girls" or "the stress of having boys". It also takes your personal focus away from preparing to be a "girl mom" or a "boy mom" and all of the stereotypes and biases that come with that; instead, you can prepare for just being the best darn mom you can be.
We are so excited to be expecting for the second time. This pregnancy, we again decided not to find out the gender of the baby. We teach Lucy that she will have a baby brother or sister, and we will find out in a few months just who it is. And as a family, we get to gear up for another superb surprise!

Hillary Clinton's Hulu Documentary Is a Glimpse Into Her Life Before She Became First Lady
Former first lady and secretary of state Hillary Clinton is sharing her story in an upcoming Hulu documentary simply titled Hillary. The documentary, scheduled to premiere on March 6, is a deeper look into Clinton's life before she became involved in the world of politics and the events leading up to her 2016 presidential campaign. "You want to make a difference; you want to have an impact," Clinton says in the trailer. "Well then, you've gotta get in the arena."
The trailer goes on to show Clinton recounting the first time she spoke to her husband Bill Clinton, as well as commenting on former president Clinton's affair with Monica Lewinsky, her 2015 email controversies, and the difficulties of being first lady. "There is a set of expectations about a first lady - I violated them from the very beginning," Clinton says. Watch the full trailer here.
1 Woman Posted This Bikini Photo to Share an Important Message About Our Self-Love Journey
"What was the first thing you noticed in this photo?," Ely Fisher asked when posting this to her Instagram page. "Today I saw stretch marks when I looked at this photo! Last time I looked at this photo I saw epic hair hahaha! And that's the honest truth."
She added, "It changes for me all the time. Loving your body in all its forms is a work in progress always." Ely posted this to bring awareness that we are all on different stages of our self-love journey, and every day is different.
She said that when she looks at this photo, sometimes she sees a happy, content woman, and other times "the stretch marks are screaming at me." A lot of the time, what she focuses on is dependent on the mindset she's carrying and the way she talks about herself.
"When things are going great in life it's easy to see everything with light attached and with love. When things aren't going so swimmingly it's harder to see things that way," she shared.
When I asked Ely what was the inspiration behind this post she said, "the journey we are all on, to love ourselves better, to let go of mindsets that hold us back from living the life we want to, it's an ongoing one. Some weeks we are fantastic at it, and other weeks not so much."
Even though her page is devoted to inspiring women to have self-worth, confidence, and health, she shared, "I too like anyone trying, have my days, where what I'm seeing in the mirror doesn't match what I know to be true. We have all fallen victim to this."
She wishes there were more voices out there, sharing their unfiltered gorgeous photos with the world. Because that's actually the every day woman; the one we sit next to in the doctor's office, the ones we see at the grocery store, the ones we sit next to in our cars at the traffic lights - "not the five percent we see plastered in magazines."
So here's a gentle reminder that when you see a photo of yourself or your image in the mirror, view yourself with kindness, appreciation, and love. Ely suggested that if you're struggling, "find three things you are thankful for."
"I am thankful for my stretch marks; they gave me my baby boy. Many women unable to have their own babies; would take the stretch marks and the loose skin time and time again just for that gift. Perspective is key," she shared. You can always find a way to appreciate your insecurities and see them in a different light.
5 Young Royals (Other Than Harry and Meghan) Who Chose to Step Back From Their Duties
On Jan. 8, 2020, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle rocked Buckingham Palace when they announced that they would be stepping back as "senior" members of the royal family. The couple released a statement on the Sussex Royal Instagram account, as well as their official website, saying that they would divide their time between the UK and North America while focusing on their son, their new charitable endeavor, and their financial independence. As unprecedented as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's decision seems, they certainly aren't the first royals to step back from their duties. Read on to see six other royals who forfeited their titles for autonomy.
Ready For More of Cheer on Netflix? Here's the Latest Scoop on a Possible Season 2
The Netflix docuseries Cheer has rallied a huge squad of fans behind it already - so what are the odds of getting a season two? Right now, there's no official word from the streaming service about whether or not they're planning to keep up with the Navarro cheer team, but based on what we've seen so far, we'd say the prospects are looking pretty good!
Cheer, like pretty much every single Netflix original show, has to wait a little while after its debut for the company to make a decision about renewal. In most cases, news about renewal comes within a few months, so it could be later this Spring before Netflix makes an official announcement. However, Cheer is getting the kind of online buzz that very few shows - and even fewer documentaries that aren't true crime - get in today's incredibly fractured media landscape. That's definitely working in its favor, and although social media buzz doesn't necessarily correlate to viewing numbers, it does at least suggest that Cheer is making a big impression right off the bat.
This wouldn't be the first time Netflix has followed a college-based sports team for multiple years, even after the original "stars" move on. Last Chance U, which has a similar format to Cheer but follows college football teams instead of a cheer squad, has had four seasons so far and is still running. That show shifted focus after a couple of years at one college to follow a new team, with a whole new set of players and coaches for the audience to get to know. Cheer could potentially do something similar, although we're pretty sure they'd stick with Navarro for at least one more year!
At the very least, there's a good chance we'll know by no later than this April whether or not Cheer is getting a second season. The NCA College Nationals are scheduled to take place April 8-12, so if Cheer is coming back, you can bet Netflix crews will be back to filming by the time that major event rolls around! Until then, we'll have to wait and see.

6 Tiny Habits That Are Slowly Ruining Your Relationship
There are obvious ways you can self-sabotage your relationship, and then there are also sneaky and subtle things you and your partner are both guilty of that can do harm. Small habits that you don't even think about can take a toll more than you think. They can slowly ruin your relationship without you even being aware of it, and in some ways, habits can hurt you even more than mistakes because they've been a part of your dynamic for a while now. See if any of the six ahead sound familiar and if they do, try to break them ASAP.
1. Staying in all the time.
Many couples eventually reach a level of comfort that keeps them on the couch most of the week. And there's nothing wrong with preferring to stay home together - as long as it doesn't completely replace your usual plans out. Of course date nights won't always be as frequent, spontaneous, or adventurous as they once were (though it's totally possible to keep it up), but it's crucial that you both continue to have fun and try new things together beyond what's now become your routine.
2. Letting things slide.
You might think you're doing your relationship good by not confronting your partner about certain issues, but you're wrong. You can address things without making them into a big deal, and you're only harming yourselves by sweeping it under the rug. And even if the result pans out to be exactly why you wanted to avoid bringing it up in the first place, it's still better to discuss matters now rather than later.
3. Getting lazy about sex.
Things aren't as hot as they used to be, and that's completely normal. But you can change that! What won't help is allowing yourself to make excuses like being too tired or busy. Maintaining intimacy is a vital part of successful relationships, so this is one area you definitely don't want to get lazy about. Skipping a night of sex is an easy habit to begin forming - break it before it starts becoming the norm.
4. Skipping relationship milestones.
Even if you two aren't typically the gushy types to make a fuss over anniversaries, it's still important to acknowledge how far you've come together. Celebrating in your own small way is even more meaningful because it's unique to your relationship. These milestones become even more important as the years go by, so don't ignore them!
5. Falling asleep on the couch.
This one may not sound like a big deal, but it's a subtle yet harmful habit. It's not problematic when you doze off in front of the TV once in a while, but when the couch starts to replace your bed, you know that's not a good sign. Sleeping together is something that can be easily taken for granted, but waking up next to the person you love is more important than we think. When you sleep separately, even unintentionally, you're physically creating distance between yourselves, which can have an effect on your relationship.
6. Not speaking your mind.
Unless your significant other is psychic, they're never going to know how you're feeling or what you're thinking if you don't tell them. And you can't always expect them to pick up on the signs, either. What kind of things about your relationship are you complaining to your friends about but not directly to your SO? It doesn't benefit either of you to withhold things, regardless of how small or petty you think they may be.

5 Questions You Might Have About CTE, the Brain Disease That Plagued Aaron Hernandez
Chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) is one of the most dangerous neurological conditions athletes can face, in part because there's still very little known about the disease. One of the most notable cases occurred in Aaron Hernandez, the ex-NFL star whose troubled life, crimes, and untimely death are the subject of a Netflix documentary, Killer Inside: The Mind of Aaron Hernandez. But Hernandez is far from the only athlete to suffer from CTE, and research shows that it's not just athletes who are at risk. Experts are working to better understand the condition - and hopefully, find ways to diagnose and treat it sooner - but in the meantime, here are the answers to a few of the most important questions you may have about it.
This CrossFit Competitor Uses Sleep, Veggies, and Cannabis to Treat Debilitating Menstrual Pain
I saw this posted on my CrossFit coach's Instagram page and immediately felt like I needed to share her experience with cannabis. I know! It's a somewhat taboo subject, but with CBD gaining so much popularity (it's in everything from chocolate bars to bath bombs), and marijuana becoming legal in more states, the topic of using cannabis for medicinal use is also gaining steam.
What's the Difference Between CBD and THC?
Before I get into Dani's experience using cannabis, if you're unfamiliar, it's another name for marijuana. To explain it simply, two of the most common natural compounds found in cannabis are CBD (cannabidiol) and THC (tetrahydrocannabinol). Studies show CBD and THC each act on the brain in different ways.
THC is the component most people will associate with "getting high," but it can also make you feel happy, physically relaxed, and can help with nausea and increase your appetite, which is why people tend to want to snack after taking THC. If you take too much, it can have the opposite effect making you have hallucinations or feel anxious or panicked. Because of this, in some places THC is illegal, but since it can help with pain, people can acquire a medical marijuana card in order to obtain it legally.
In contrast, CBD is legal because it has no psychoactive properties. To clarify, according to US legislation, it's defined as cannabis that contains less than 0.3 percent THC. People who use CBD usually describe it as feeling calm and having the absence of feeling worried or nervous, which is why it can help with mental health issues like anxiety. It can also help with pain such as migraines.
The percentage of THC and CBD found in marijuana depends on the plant. Some marijuana plants are high-CBD, low-THC, some are high-THC, low-CBD, and some have equal amounts of both. That's why you can see hemp flower (bud) that looks like marijuana (like in the photo) that you'd associate with the weed that alters your mood, but if it's high-CBD (like this bud I vaped), using it in normal doses won't get you high.
If you purchase cannabis products through a trusted website or at a dispensary, you can find out exactly which products are high in THC and which are high in CBD. It's so much safer to use these products because you have a greater understanding of what effects to expect. It's way different than if you get a bag of weed from your best friend's cousin's boyfriend, you know?
Why Dani Started Taking Cannabis
Dani explained that she started using cannabis at the end of August 2018 because of her menstrual cycles, endometriosis, and ovarian cysts. "The pain would be very debilitating. I wouldn't be able to do much," she said. Over-the-counter pain meds like ibuprofen and acetaminophen didn't help with the pain at all.
She then applied for her medical marijuana card as recommended by her naturopath, and that's when she started experimenting with the THC strain of cannabis and blending it with CBD. She said, "it changed my world. There is still pain but it's manageable. I'm not crawling on the floor rolling in pain like I used to."
How Does Dani Take CBD and THC?
Dani has experimented with all forms of CBD and THC and found that different forms (smoke, edible, and topical) help in different situations. For example, if she's struggling with pain and sleep, she would take an edible THC one to two hours before bed, along with CBD in an edible form. Dani uses CBD more than THC. She doesn't use THC every day, just on an as-needed basis, but does take CBD daily. She prefers the CBD tincture if possible, and likes to put it in warm chamomile tea to help with relaxation before to bed.
What Are the Benefits Dani Has Experienced From Taking Cannabis?
Dani said that using THC and CBD has helped with pain management from injuries, and has noticed it's helped with her anxiety, seasonal depression, and female issues. It's also helped with winding down and shutting her mind off after a busy or stressful day. Improved sleep has also been a benefit, as well as help with general aches and pains.
What Dani Wants Others to Know About Using CBD and THC
While CBD is more accepted by people, she said people aren't so sure about THC and may still think it's a bad drug. "I think that THC has this stigma that when you use it, you just sit on the couch, pass out, and get the munchies," she said. That can absolutely be the case if you want it to be, but it can also go the other way as well.
Dani has found that certain strains have actually increased her productivity by eliminating discomfort (in her case, anxiety and/or pain). Unfortunately there isn't a lot of research available about THC and the proper dose or strain to use for what ailment. Her goal is to do as much experimenting and documentation on herself with hopes of helping others in a similar situation. Dani hopes that in the future THC and CBD is more accepted by people once they realize all the benefits.
What Should You Do If You Want to Try Cannabis?
Dani is in no way suggesting you go out and try cannabis - she's only sharing her experience. But if you think it might be effective, talk with a healthcare professional about your issues to see if using CBD or THC could help you. It's also important that if you do choose to try it, that you get product from a reputable source, where it's accurately labeled. Start off with small doses and document your experience so you know what you used, how much, and whether or not it helped.
Cannabis Helps, But Here's What Other Lifestyle Changes Dani Has Made
"I know there are other people out there who are suffering with similar things like myself and they might feel stuck or helpless because currently what they're doing isn't working." She hopes that by sharing her experience, it may help someone else. With that being said, she knows THC and CBD isn't a "cure-all." She suggests making other healthy lifestyle changes to support their goals and what they're looking to improve.
To help her female issues, Dani didn't just start using THC and CBD and magically be cured. She said, "I made lifestyle changes as well. I started by sleeping more, dialing in my nutrition, eating a ton of veggies, fruits, and more healthy fats, I started drinking more water, and finding ways to de-stress my body."
This 1 Trick Helps Me Fall Back Asleep During the Night and Feel More Rested in the Morning
I've never been the kind of person who can pull an all nighter, then power through the day with just a cup of coffee and a good pair of sunglasses. If I don't sleep, I don't function - it's as simple as that.
In some ways, I find waking up in the middle of the night worse than not being able to fall asleep at all. The second I become conscious again, I go straight into panic mode. The only way I can think to explain it is this: I know what to expect from insomnia, but disrupted sleep feels like a curveball.
I woke up in the wee hours night after night. One time I was awake from 2 a.m. to 5 a.m., then back up with my alarm at 7 a.m.
Just last month this problem hit me hard. My boyfriend was out of the country for a few weeks and, because of the change in routine, I had issues not falling asleep, but staying asleep. I woke up in the wee hours night after night. One time I was awake from 2 a.m. to 5 a.m., then back up with my alarm at 7 a.m., when I was expected to enter society as a fully functioning human being.
By the fourth night, I was not only exhausted, but emotional and desperate to find a solution. The techniques I use to combat occasional insomnia weren't working for this particular issue. After trying a few different things (meditation, a white noise machine, and even supplements), I finally discovered a simple, somewhat funny trick that actually worked - I call it the "no thinking" hack, and it's exactly as straightforward as it sounds.
I simply close my eyes, get under the covers, and for the next few minutes, I try to wipe my thoughts clean. No focusing on my breath, no counting down, no meditation tracks on Apple Music - and definitely no worrying about how much sleep I've already lost. If a thought enters my mind, I gently acknowledge it before going back to blank. To my surprise, whenever I do this, it feels like no time at all has passed when suddenly it's morning.
I realize that this isn't revolutionary, but maybe that's why it works. Sometimes we try so hard to do something that should come naturally, and then when those methods fail, it only fuels our stress. This trick solved that, and I'm sleeping better for it.

This wouldn't be the first time Netflix has followed a college-based documentary series for multiple years, even after the original "stars" move on.
The NCA College Nationals are scheduled to take place from Apr. 8-12, so if Cheer is coming back, you can be Netflix crews will be back to filming by the time that major event rolls around! Until then, we'll have to wait and see.
Netflix Knows You Love Virgin River, and That's Why Season 2 Is Already in the Works
The romantic drama Virgin River was a hit for Netflix in its first season, but will there be a season two? Fans of the series are in luck! According to a Deadline report, Netflix has officially ordered a second season of Virgin River. The current plan is for season two to film soon and be ready for a debut later in 2020. Although there hasn't been a ton of press about what season two will entail, here's what we do know.
There's plenty of material for a second season of Virgin River to work with. The series is based on a bestselling contemporary romance book series by Robyn Carr, which includes more than 20 books in all. At the center of the stories' universe is nurse practitioner Melinda Monroe (played by Alexandra Breckenridge), who moves to the small town of Virgin River in hopes of a fresh start. Of course, it wouldn't be a drama series if things were that easy. Along with Breckenridge, the series cast includes Martin Henderson, Annette O'Toole, Tim Matheson, Lauren Hammersley, Jenny Cooper, Daniel Gillies, and Colin Lawrence. The first season had ten episodes, which has become a pretty standard episode count for many Netflix originals; it has not yet been announced how many episodes will be in season two.
While other recent Netflix dramas such as Spinning Out are still waiting for renewal news, Virgin River is full steam ahead - and it's not the only romance offering the streaming platform has greenlit. Deadline also reported that Netflix has given a season order to Sweet Magnolias, based on a series of romance novels by Sherryl Woods. JoAnna Garcia Swisher is set to star in the South Carolina-set series, which is slated for a 2020 debut. With so many new streaming platforms entering the market, it makes sense that Netflix is dipping into new genres in order to compete with all the possibilities out there!
Buying New Jeans? How About A Pair From One of These Sustainable Denim Brands
T-shirts and jeans, we basically live in them, right? But there's a scary reality about the latter . . . they can be really damaging to the environment (excessive material waste, tons of water usage, toxic dyes and chemicals are a few primary issues). Though a little lighter, it's one of those ugly topics we don't like to think about like climate change and The Great Pacific Garbage Patch aka trash island. But even still, it's a subject well-worth educating yourself on whether you're denim obsessive or simply in the market for a new pair of jeans.
Now, wrapping your head around the process of sustainable fashion and denim specifically is kind of like a mathematical theorem . . . incredibly complex! There's a ton of information out there and it can quickly become overwhelming once you start digging in. There is, however, some baseline concepts that we can all understand and seek out in an eco-friendly pair of jeans such as decreasing water and energy usage, avoiding toxic chemicals and dyes, using organic, responsibly sourced, or deadstock (leftover fabric that can be used to create new garments) materials, and ensuring fair and ethical labor regulations are in place.
There's also the option of shopping second-hand and limiting consumption altogether, both of which are great and responsible methods to consider. But if you're interested in learning about brands that offer sustainable denim be it an innovative new label or cult-loved brand that's evolving their design standards, I've curated a list to help guide you, ahead. When it comes to your jeans, why not go green?

Your Colorful Clothes Won't Fade If You Use This DIY Trick
If you actually buy colorful clothes (I'm a gray and black kind of gal), the last thing you want is for the item to fade and the color to become dull. But there's a fix for that! You can actually colorfast your clothes so they don't fade or bleed onto other clothes in the wash. The process is so simple and doesn't use any harsh chemicals, so it's perfect for using on cotton tops, fluffy towels, linens, and even natural-fiber rugs. Here's what to do.
How to Colorfast Your Clothes
- Thoroughly clean a large mixing bowl or cleaning bucket, and then fill it with one gallon of fresh, clean water. Add one-fourth cup table salt and one cup vinegar. The vinegar and salt work together to naturally lock the color into the fabric. Give the water a swish to make sure the salt and vinegar are distributed evenly.
- Add the garment to the water, and press it into the water until it's fully saturated. That's it! Let the fabric soak in the water for 24 hours to ensure the color is completely set. You might notice a bit of color in the water, but that's OK.
- Remove the item, dump the water and rinse the container, and fill it with fresh water. Add the fabric back to the container and gently squish and swirl it, refreshing it with clean water. If you still see color releasing from the fabric, repeat a soaking in the vinegar saltwater.
- Let the fabric fully dry, and your item will hold its color the next time it's tossed in the wash.
