How Indoor Plants Can Help You Avoid Getting Sick This Flu Season

Think that the role of household plants is to just brighten up living spaces and look nice on shelves? Think again. Many common household plants, such as ferns, palms, and ZZ plants, can actually lower the infectivity of airborne viruses by raising humidity levels indoors. Yes, you heard that right. One of the secret weapons to fending off or dealing with the common cold or flu may not just be in your medicine cabinet - but also on your windowsill.

According to research, when humidity hits above 40 percent, it is able to greatly reduce the virulence and infectivity of the flu virus. Higher humidity also means lower infectivity of airborne viruses. This is where plants come in: all plants, with the exception of succulents and cacti, have the ability to increase humidity levels through a process known as transpiration.

"Transpiration occurs when direct sunlight strikes the leaves and pulls water from them into the air," explains Christopher Satch, head of plant science and education at The Sill. "The plant, in turn, pulls water from the soil to replace the water that has evaporated into the air. The bigger the plant, the more transpiration that occurs, and the more water that gets moved into the air. Humidity increases with increased transpiration and having more plants and bigger plants raises humidity the most."

So don't be afraid to splurge on plants this year - not only do they purify the air we breathe, but they can also keep us healthy. Read ahead for 17 humidity-generating plants, and where to buy them, that can help us to feel our best.

Sooooo Netflix Changed a LOT About To All the Boys: P.S. I Still Love You

Obviously I'm well aware that a movie is never going to be the same as the book it's based on. I get it. But wow is To All the Boys: P.S. I Still Love You wildly different from the book. Not only is John Ambrose McClaren's story totally different but the entire movie starts off completely different from the book. The gist of the story is there, yes, but even the ending is different. While Peter Kavinsky (Noah Centineo) and Lara Jean Covey (Lana Condor) end up basically in the same place (back together after breaking up and confessing their love to each other), the locations are different and the events leading up to it are as well. All the changes to the movie work just fine, but if you're a book purist, just remember that I warned you. Keep reading to see some of the most major difference between the book and movie and prepare yourselves for possibly even more changes in the third story, Always and Forever, Lara Jean.

The US Women's Soccer Team Could Make History With Another Olympic Gold in Tokyo

When the US women's soccer team takes the field at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, they'll be in a unique position, arriving to the Games as both the gold-medal favorites and a team seeking redemption. The USWNT has already won more Olympic medals than any other nation - and could make history again this Summer - but they're also looking for a fresh start after a disappointing performance at the 2016 Games.

To date, the USWNT has made the podium at five of the six women's Olympic tournaments, bringing home a total of four gold medals and one silver. In 1996, they won the first-ever Olympic gold for women's soccer, defeating China, 2-1, on their home turf in Atlanta. Four years later, they picked up a silver medal in Sydney, Australia, after falling to Norway in the final. After that, the team went on a winning streak, collecting gold medals in three consecutive Olympic Games. They defeated Brazil in 2004 and 2008 and Japan in 2012.

The 2016 Olympics in Rio, however, were not so kind to the American women. For the first time at any major international tournament, the USWNT did not even make it to the semifinals. Instead, they were eliminated in the quarterfinals during a penalty shoot-out with Sweden, the eventual silver medalists. It was a stunning loss, but the team quickly reclaimed the spotlight, clenching their fourth World Cup in 2019.

If they're able to carry that momentum into the 2020 Olympics, they'll be the first team in history to win back-to-back World Cup and Olympic tournaments. Whatever the outcome, it's sure to be a thrilling showdown for soccer fans and casual viewers alike.

See All the Stars Who Turned Out For the 2020 BRIT Awards!

The BRIT Awards really outdid themselves this year, with plenty star-studded appearances at London's O2 Arena on Tuesday night. We had Lewis Capaldi doing his thing on the red carpet and Lizzo dressed like a literal snack (no really, she dressed like a Hershey's Chocolate bar). Billie Eilish stepped out with her brother, Finneas O'Connell, and performed the James Bond theme song "No Time to Die" for the first time ever. The annual award ceremony is known for being a celebration of British musical talent, with a heavy dose of British humor (Remember that time Harry Styles missed One Direction winning an award because he was in the loo?), and this year's show did not disappoint. Here are all the best photos from the 2020 BRIT Awards red carpet.

Soooo, Lizzo Just Downed Harry Styles's Entire Glass of Tequila at the BRIT Awards

We know two things: Lizzo and Harry Styles make an epic duo, and they'd do a fine job presenting at an award show. Thanks to the many fun moments between the pair, Tuesday's BRIT Awards were an absolute treat to watch.

In between epic performances, awards being announced, and heartfelt speeches, presenter Jack Whitehall made sure to speak with Lizzo and Harry plenty of times throughout the night, which made for lots of hand holding, kisses, cuddling, and, best of all, downing very strong alcoholic beverages. After trying a small sip of the tipple, Jack handed Harry's drink (which just so happened to be a full glass of neat tequila) over to Lizzo, who took on the challenge of downing the entire thing like a champ. We're sure that her potential hangover will be worth it.

Jack seemed fond of his new love triangle, tweeting "New show. Me @lizzo and @Harry_Styles travelling round the world in a camper van," and we are absolutely into that idea. Read on to see some of Harry and Lizzo's best moments from the BRIT Awards.

Why 2020 Is the Year Gyms Become Cool Again

When was the last time you had a gym membership? Three years ago? Ten years ago? Never?

The boutique fitness boom has drawn people away from traditional gyms in the past decade. As fitness-lovers found their niche (Spin addicts and Pilates enthusiasts and kickboxers alike), they drifted away from ellipticals and locker rooms and into grapefruit-scented studios with SmartWater and designer bath products.

But the times, they are a-changin'! We predict that 2020 will be the year people start going back to the gym, whether it's a franchise or local spot. Why? A few reasons: the gym you once knew is getting a major makeover in terms of services, and with new pricing options at gyms across the country, they're more competitive than ever.

While we don't anticipate those niche classes going away anytime soon (to the contrary!), we do think gyms will be on the upswing once again. The growth of the health and wellness industry isn't slowing down, and if the insights ahead prove anything, it's that there's room at the table for everyone. Here's why you're likely to see plenty of new faces at the gym in the coming year.

Kaia Gerber and Mom Cindy Crawford Give Us 2 Times the Style Inspiration We Need

Kaia Gerber and Cindy Crawford are a mother-daughter force to be reckoned with - on and off the runway, on the red carpet, and basically anywhere they go. You might assume it would be a high standard to live up to being the offspring of an iconic '90s supermodel, but Kaia is successfully paving her own path within the industry. While it's fun to watch the 18-year-old model as she graces countless runways and makes her mark in the fashion world, quite literally following in her mom's footsteps, it's even more fun to see Cindy and Kaia together.

Whether they're striking a pose in doubly dramatic evening gowns at the British Fashion Awards, teaming up to speak at Vogue's Forces of Fashion conference, or sharing a sweet hug at a Mother's Day brunch, Kaia and Cindy are cut from the same sartorial cloth. They share a love of cool leather jackets worn with equally cool denim; high-impact gowns; and covet-worthy accessories, most notably, ankle-strap heels and statement sunglasses. The result? Stylish inspiration for day-to-night looks that easily translate for any age, season, or occasion.

The facts don't lie - they're truly a genetically blessed case of "like mother, like daughter," and we're here for it. To see Cindy and Kaia's best style moments to date, keep reading.

Our Editors Researched the Best Mint Chip Ice Cream Brands, and Here's What They Had to Say

What's the scoop? Mint chocolate chip ice cream is one of the most popular ice cream flavors across the nation, and our editors at POPSUGAR have some strong opinions about which brand does the flavor the most justice. Personally, I like my mint chip ice cream dairy-free, loaded with hearty chocolate chunks and free of any of that artificial green dye, while others might argue that the flavor reminds them of toothpaste or mouthwash. But for those of us lucky enough to have taste buds in favor of the minty treat, there's really no other ice cream that will beat it, especially not interesting flavors like hot dog ice cream or mustard ice cream.

After years of eating ice cream serious research - taking into account texture, color, and the size of the chocolate bits - here's what our editors have to say about which brand of mint chocolate chip ice cream does it best. Do you agree?

Amazon’s Jeff Bezos Pledges $10 Billion to Fight the Effects of Climate Change

The world's richest man, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, has pledged $10 billion to fight climate change. On Monday, he announced the launch of the Bezos Earth Fund in an Instagram post, writing, "climate change is the biggest threat to our planet." Bloomberg estimates that Bezos is personally worth $130 billion, which means he is committing just shy of 8% of his total fortune.

Bezos says he will work with the experts who are already researching, and actively fighting to save the Earth. "This global initiative will fund scientists, activists, NGOs - any effort that offers a real possibility to help preserve and protect the natural world." He goes on to say that saving the earth is going to take collective action from big (and small) companies, global organisations, nation states, and individuals.

And, it seems, the $10 billion is just the beginning, with the plan to "begin issuing grants this summer." This isn't the first time Bezos has spoken about climate change. In Sept. 2019, Amazon cofounded The Climate Pledge, which set the goal of meeting the Paris Climate Agreement 10 years early. Although President Donald Trump announced in 2017 that the US would be withdrawing from the agreement, Amazon has committed to net zero carbon by 2040, and 100% renewable energy by 2030.

While speaking at Amazon's Smbhav summit in New Delhi last month, he said, "Anybody today who is not acknowledging that climate change is real - that we humans are affecting this planet in a very significant and dangerous way - those people are not being reasonable."

This Simple Breathing Trick Helps Me Fall Back Asleep Instantly, Transforming My Mornings

Like many people, I went through a phase in my life of waking up in the middle of the night and being unable to fall back to sleep. I'd stare at the clock, watching the minutes tick by relentlessly, feeling more and more stressed about how tired and unproductive I'd be the next morning.

When I say "many people," that isn't hyperbole: in one study, more than a third of participants reported waking up during the night at least three times a week, and of those, 43 percent struggled to doze back off. There are a number of reasons you might wake up during the night - it could be that your room is too hot or noisy, or that you're hungry or too full. I tried everything from sleep apps to white noise to powering down my devices an hour before bed, but no matter how desperately I tried to solve the problem, it still happened.

Finally, I came across a breathing trick that promised to put me back to sleep in roughly a minute by easing stress and relaxing the nervous system. It's called the 4-7-8 method, and it worked wonders. The next time you're struggling to fall back asleep, try it for yourself, and enjoy how well-rested you feel the next morning. Here's how:

  1. Place your tongue just behind your front teeth. Keep it there throughout the exercise.
  2. Exhale through your mouth, making a whooshing noise.
  3. Close your mouth, and inhale quietly through your nose while you count to four in your head.
  4. Hold your breath for a count of seven.
  5. Exhale through your mouth, making a whooshing noise to a count of eight.
  6. Repeat three more times for a total of four cycles.

Do You Know About This AirPods Live Listen Hack?

I feel like everyone's mom or grandma when I say "technology is WILD for the kids these days" - but it's true! Seems like every single day there's an undiscovered iPhone user hack or screen time secret that changes the way people use their devices. But rarely do we see a hack quite so sneaky (or spine-tingling) as this one, which uses the AirPods Live Listen feature.

This tool was originally designed as an accessibility function for those who need to enhance voices, but as Twitter user @arnoldcrndo pointed out, it can also be used to hear conversations in a room where you've left your phone behind. Simply go into your Settings, select "Control Center," customize your controls to include "Hearing," and choose "Live Listen." Afterward, you can walk away from your iPhone in a crowded room and hear amplified sound through the microphone.

Now, I love to eavesdrop as much as the next person (and judging by what I hear them whispering right now, probably more), but I'm definitely not endorsing the use of AirPods in this way. In fact, I have mixed feelings about this hack, and based on the reactions on social media, I'm not alone. Ahead, see what people are saying about this feature, and let's leave the super-sleuthing to the professionals, shall we?
