Love Is Blind: Why We Need More Contestants Like Lauren Speed in Season 2
Fan-favorite Lauren Speed may have proved that love is blind, but her role in season one of the Netflix show displayed so much more. From Issa Rae on Insecure to Kate Edison on The Bold Type, we are seeing more accurate portrayals of Black women on TV than ever - and it's so important. In this case, Lauren's positive representation on Netflix's reality show emphasizes that Black women being their true and authentic selves is beautiful and desirable - despite how we may have been previously portrayed on reality TV.
Without even trying, Lauren's presence on the show acted as a mirror for our own dating experiences as Black women. We see ourselves in moments where she wakes up next to her now husband, Cameron Hamilton during their honeymoon, bare-faced and wearing a bonnet. She explains to the camera how important it is for Black women to wrap their hair up at night. Even though Cameron believes she is beautiful in her "bonnet beret", this sweet reaction hasn't always been the response from romantic partners on reality TV.
Let's look at Love Island UK" Yewande Biala, a contestant on season five, was notably the last to get picked during the "coupling" ceremony. The year prior, Samira Mighty was also the last to get picked at the ceremony during her time as an Islander. The previous Summer, Marcel Somerville was also picked last. Even though the producers attempted to provide representation, the diverse cast members not being first picks contributed to the perception that Black people are not desirable. This is why it's so refreshing to see Lauren be the first on Love Is Blind to receive a marriage proposal - as well as being in one of the only couples to make it work once the cameras stopped rolling.
Although Lauren's appearance is inarguably wholesome, stereotypes about Black women are still very present in reality television. In fact, in a genre of TV where drama is encouraged to boost ratings, Black women frequently get lost in stereotypes. Even though Love & Hip Hop is a show I find myself binging on the weekends from time to time, its storylines often center around multiple women battling it out over one of the male characters or fighting to be loved the way they deserve to be.
It's easy to get sucked in by the unfolding drama when tables are getting flipped over and words are getting bleeped out. But the truth is, these storylines add to the problematic idea that Black women are aggressive. It is crucial to look past this "angry" archetype in order to be seen for who we are: whole people who are worthy of love and affection.
Even Rachel Lindsay, the first Black Bachelorette to lead the franchise, believes she was mislabeled during her season on the show. Rachel expressed her concerns in a blog post for US Weekly as she recapped Becca Kufrin's season each week. She felt her finale spent more time sympathizing with her runner-up Peter Kraus than congratulating her engagement to Bryan Abasolo - not the case for other contestants, including Becca.
"Let's just be honest, Becca did not have the finale that I had. There was no controversy and she was not put in a position to face any," Lindsay wrote in US Weekly. "She was protected and I was placed on display for three hours and labeled an angry Black female. And there will always be that stigma attached to my finale because it has been said that when truth is blurred by misinformation, perception becomes reality and all is lost."
Lindsay's season gave the opportunity to give viewers a chance to understand the realities of Black women's experiences in relationships, but her happy ending was overshadowed (and somewhat invalidated) by the heightened drama of other cast members. On Love Is Blind on the other hand, Lauren's father seizes his opportunity to ask real and necessary questions that Black viewers were not only anticipating all season, but have lived through ourselves. He's a reminder that there is a world outside of the cameras and once they stop rolling, the couple will have to face society and how it views their relationship.
Ultimately, he gives his blessing and assures Cameron that he will not judge him for anything beyond how he treats his daughter. This conversation is essential for viewers watching at home because it confirms that regardless of race, Lauren as well as any of other Black woman on or off screen are deserving of being loved wholly.
When it comes to dating shows (and really, any type of visual media), casting women with a wide range of skin tones is only a start. Lauren's role on Love Is Blind exemplifies what we need to push forward a more accurate narrative of the dating experience as a Black woman. With casting underway for season two, we can only hope the new contestants will help continue to rewrite the narrative.

20 Things Women Should Never Feel Guilty About
I am the kind of person who will say sorry upon bumping into a pole. I will also follow up an assertion of my opinion with a "sorry" if someone disagrees with me even slightly. My frequent use of the word "sorry" comes from a deeply rooted fear of being an inconvenience to anyone or imposing myself where I feel like I don't belong. In other words, it comes from guilt.
A few years ago, I came across Joan Didion's essay "On Self-Respect," which changed my relationship with guilt. In her piece, Didion writes, "Character - the willingness to accept responsibility for one's own life - is the source from which self-respect springs." Reading her words forced me to realize that feeling guilty about the things that made me myself was not only self-defeating, but also self-denying.
I am not alone. Countless women express feelings of shame over not meeting up with social expectations when it comes to their careers, looks, relationships, opinions - the list goes on and on. Guilt is a toxic emotion, and much less forgiving than remorse or acceptance. While it's pervasive, you can tame it with self-awareness. From wearing makeup to saying no, here is a list of things that should never make women feel guilty.

Social Distancing Hasn’t Been Easy as a Latina, but This Is What I’m Doing to Feel Better
I'm not going to lie, when I heard about the "social distancing" measures I thought, "Oh, this is going to be so easy, I'm pretty much home all the time anyways." The truth is, I had more daily interactions than I had processed, and I think that's because it's who I am as a Latina.
Latinx thrive with contact. Most of the time we don't really pay attention to personal space, and get as physically close as we can get when we're having an interesting conversation. We also tap each other a lot. It comes with being extra expressive. If the conversation got juicy, we'll probably react with a tap on the other person's shoulder and saying "No me digas!"
And let's not even begin with all the hugging and kissing. It's just our way to say hello. We get weirded out when someone extends their hand for a shake, and end up pulling them in for a bear hug. So, after a little over two weeks of being isolated alone at home, I started having a lot of anxiety. I was already doing what I have to do by staying home and limiting my time outside - only going out once a day to walk my dog and get some sun - but I was getting way in my head.
That's when I decided to try and do things that would bring me comfort and make me feel a little closer to home and get my mind off what's going on, if only for a little bit.
Limit Social Media
While we're relying on technology to stay connected lately, we've been saturating ourselves, which is taking a huge toll on our mental health. So, the first thing I did to start feeling like myself again was to limit social media, especially Facebook.
I personally use it to stay connected with my family - we know how much our tías and abuelas love it - but all I saw were people complaining, or posting conspiracy theories, or being rude to each other. Most of them mean well, but all the information overload with so many mixed messages can haze your mind. You'd be surprised, but going only a day without it did wonders for me.
Video Chats With Tus Seres Queridos
Instead of connecting with my whole family over social media, my immediate family agreed to do a video conference where we could all hang out for a bit. Seeing their faces made me feel much better, and we were able to talk about other things that were not coronavirus-related. We made jokes, reminisced good times, and even got our pets on the call as well.
Belt It Out!
Another thing I've found myself doing to de-stress has been yelling Juan Gabriel's iconic "Querida" out lout at random times. I don't know why, but after I've done it I pause and think of how ridiculous I sound and start bursting into laughter. Ricky Martin's "Vuelve" has the same effect as well. I've also noticed myself gravitating more towards music in Spanish. I think it's because it's my first language, and subconsciously, hearing it grounds me and makes me feel closer to where I come from and who I am.
Dance Party For One
I've discovered it's highly as effective to burst out into little dance moments just because. Daddy Yankee's "Que Tire Pa' Lante" is my go-to, that song just makes me want to get up and dance. I even learned the Zumba choreo that months ago was an Instagram challenge I was too busy to take part in. Another song that gets me going? Pabllo Vittar's "Buzina," you can't not dance to it.
Food That Tastes Like Home
Usually, after my little dance parties, I get hungry. This has been a bigger challenge for me, not because I don't know how to cook, but because I really don't like cooking. However, I've been taking this situation to make my favorite comfort foods. From mangú de plátano con cebollita, to arroz con habichuelas, each bite has transported me to a happy place.
A Little Pampering Goes a Long Way
As all these things make me feel good on the inside, it starts reflecting on the outside. And I'm taking this opportunity to enhance that reflection by indulging in a little pampering. Since I have a little more time now, I've been cleansing my face more often, moisturizing consistently, spending an extra five minutes in the shower to put on a hair mask, finally using that cuticle oil I bought months ago, and exfoliating my feet.
If you live by yourself, like me, these little actions of self-care and self-love will make you feel more relaxed and will provide a positive distraction. Now more than ever, I'm tapping into my Latinidad to make me feel comforted and supported during these times as I learn to adapt to this temporary normal at home to help flatten the curve. Things will get better, and when they do, I'll look back and think how my heritage positively impacted how I coped with this period.

A Belated Ode to 1 of TV's Biggest Badasses: Dr. Temperance Brennan, aka Bones
I was 13 the first time I came across Dr. Temperance Brennan. I was stuck in my room while a terrifying thunderstorm raged outside, and I turned on the TV. I stayed up most of the night watching a Bones marathon, and I was instantly enamored. Over the years I spent watching and rewatching Bones, the team at the Jeffersonian undeniably changed me for the better.
Dr. Temperance Brennan, nicknamed Bones, is the focal point of the show. She is the leader of the team, and she is what makes the show so special. Bones is a forensic anthropologist and mystery writer who works solving crimes with her partner, Seely Booth. Watching her throughout my teen years was an incredible source of inspiration, mostly because Bones, a borderline genius, is confident in herself and her abilities.
It's no secret that in this society, beautiful, accomplished, and intelligent women are often seen as intimidating. Bones doesn't care if she intimidates people. She absolutely refuses to make herself dumber to make those around her more comfortable.
As a teenager, I pretended to be stupid in order to fit in. It was my main social coping mechanism. I dumbed myself down to make those around me feel more comfortable. I had no confidence in myself and in my intelligence, and watching Bones be so unapologetically herself slowly helped me realize that those who are worth having around will accept me for who I really am. Because of Bones, I no longer apologize for being an accomplished woman - I wear my success as a badge of honor.
Like me, Bones can be at times a self-absorbed know-it-all. But part of what makes her so inspirational is her character development when it comes to how she handles her flaws. Through the constant support of her friends, she learns to acknowledge her problems, and she works on herself consistently throughout the series. She becomes a better person every season, without sacrificing a single ounce of what makes her so unique and special. She taught me that it's OK to admit you're wrong sometimes, and it's OK to listen to the advice of others and move forward. It doesn't make you any less strong.
So many times we look back on the characters we loved as kids and realize they are problematic or at least no longer fit our values. It happens time and time again where I rewatch or reread something and walk away with a completely different view of a character than the perception I originally formed.
That's not the case with Bones. Bones holds up because she does not claim perfection. The writers did not put her on a pedestal. They made her an inspiration, but not a hero. Bones is human. An amazing human, but a human nonetheless.

This Artist Smashes Stereotypes by Giving Men Superheroes a Sexy, Pinup-Style Makeover
In David Talaski-Brown's mind, Thor doesn't wear a red cape and full-body armor - he rocks a pink polka-dot robe, green Hulk slippers, and, well, that's about it. A 30-year-old artist from Portland, OR, David is flipping the script with men superheroes, giving them a sexy makeover as a nod to the way scantily clad women superheroes are traditionally depicted.
"There's always been a lack of sexy male art on comic convention floors," the artist told POPSUGAR. "I thought this would be a fun way to create some equal opportunity when I tabled at my first convention last year. I've always been a big fan of midcentury pinup artists like Gil Elvgren, and the idea of putting male superheroes in similar poses and situations typically portrayed with women felt appropriate and cheeky."
And cheeky they are! David's illustrations, which he paints digitally using the Procreate app on his iPad before adding the finishing touches in Photoshop, show a whole lotta skin, and sometimes even subtle peeks at the character's derriere. David's art has garnered positive reactions far and wide - so much so that his Etsy shop, which sells prints of his sexy men superheroes, is constantly selling out. Ahead, admire David's unique depictions of Star-Lord, T'Challa, Doctor Strange, and more. Our fingers are crossed for sexy Spider-Man and Hulk portraits soon!

Is Your City or State Considering a Shelter in Place Order? Here's What to Expect
The coronavirus lockdown varies from state to state and even between counties and cities. While some officials are encouraging social distancing, others are mandating "sheltering in place" in order to contain the virus. Wondering what the difference is? There's very little, actually.
"From a very technical standpoint, social distancing guidelines are what public health experts are recommending, while shelter-in-place orders are public mandates, often from elected officials," Natasha Bhuyan, MD, a family physician and regional medical director at One Medical, told POPSUGAR. "Both convey the same general idea: in order to curb the spread of COVID-19, it's best for people to avoid others."
Regardless of what your city or state requires, it's imperative that you stay home as much as you can to prevent the spread, even if you consider yourself young and healthy. And if you are immunosuppressed, elderly, pregnant, or have young children, this is especially important.
Another reason to stay home: you can have the virus and be contagious even if you're not displaying any symptoms. Read on for more advice on how to protect yourself and others.
How to Practice Social Distancing
"Social distancing means avoiding crowds, mass transit, and keeping a distance of at least six feet from others," Dr. Bhuyan said. "It means foregoing social functions, bars, restaurants, and even work (if it is able to be done remotely), in an attempt to avoid others." Again, this is a directive coming from public health officials.
Those who are social distancing are also encouraged to stay home as much as possible, which is the most effective way to "flatten the curve," or prevent cases from surpassing the capacity of the healthcare system, which puts lives at risk.
What Does It Mean to Shelter in Place?
"With shelter-in-place orders, only essential services should continue," Dr. Bhuyan said. This means that nonessential businesses are closed for the time being, though the specifics will vary depending on where you live. Things that are still operating? "Healthcare, pharmacies, grocery stores, waste management, etc," Dr. Bhuyan told POPSUGAR. When you do venture out for essentials or just to get some exercise or fresh air, you should stay at least six feet from those around you.
In some cases, officials may put even stricter measures in place for the most vulnerable populations. For example, in New York, folks over 70 and those with compromised immune systems and underlying illnesses have been asked to stay home and limit visitors to immediate family, who should take their temperature before coming inside, among other measures.
Why Are These Measures So Important?
While these precautions may seem intense, this is necessary for so many reasons, including the fact that it literally will save lives. Lessening the speed and severity of the spread will ease the burden on hospitals and healthcare providers (think: fewer COVID patients in the ICU, more capacity to take care of people with other life-threatening traumas and illnesses).
Because there is no vaccine or treatment specific to this strain of coronavirus, your best defense (aside from washing your hands and cleaning germ-ridden surfaces) is to stay home and avoid contact with people as much as possible. So, do your part and help save lives!

Alicia Keys Opens Up About Her Choice to Move Forward With Second Pregnancy
When it comes to reproductive rights and the stigma around abortion, Alicia Keys understands what it's like to make a difficult decision. In her new book More Myself, Alicia opened up about her personal struggle in deciding whether or not to go through with her second pregnancy in 2014 after finding out she was pregnant four months in. At the time, the "Underdog" singer, who married producer and rapper Swizz Beatz in 2010, was a mother of one working on her sixth studio album Here and was not prepared to take on the responsibility of having another child.
"The music I was creating felt more important and urgent than just about everything."
"I wasn't ready for this, which is what I told the doctor," Alicia told People in a recent interview. "'This is the worst time ever. I'm working on my next album. My husband just got into Harvard Business School. And I've been drinking - a lot.' I left her office feeling so torn."
Alicia said that she had planned to focus heavily on her career that year, and the unexpected news made her contemplate whether or not she wanted to go through with the pregnancy. "The music I was creating felt more important and urgent than just about everything," Alicia said. I'd have to put off its release for at least a year if I chose to have the baby."
During a studio session, Alicia had an epiphany while listening to a song she and her husband had worked on together. "While I was struggling over my choice, I went into the studio one evening and began listening to 'More Than We Know,' a song Swizz and I had written," Alicia continued. "The lyrics are about how we're capable of so much more than we can ever imagine. My eyes filled with tears. How could I take away the potential for this beautiful child, this light that could touch others in ways I couldn't dream of. For me, the song was a powerful message that I should go on with the pregnancy."
Alicia and Swizz welcomed their second son Genesis in Dec. 2014. Since then, Alicia has learned that her mother also considered getting an abortion when she was pregnant with the star. Ultimately, her mother decided to go through with the pregnancy and raise Alicia on her own after a brief relationship with her father. "It wasn't until writing this that I realized, 'Oh s-, she chose me,' even through all the difficulties," Alicia said. "How would she ever know what I was brought here to do? In a way we are parallel, but I didn't even know that."
Today, the singer enjoys spending time with her two sons - 9-year-old Egypt and 5-year-old Genesis - and teaching them to express themselves creatively.
