My Destination Wedding Is Weeks Away, and Here's How Coronavirus Is Affecting It
The stress of planning a wedding can be overwhelming already, but with the ongoing pandemic of coronavirus (COVID-19), my worry and anxiety have skyrocketed.
Our wedding is in June, which falls right outside of the CDC's eight-week proposed timeline for avoiding groups of 50 or more - but we know this could be extended. Currently, we're expecting 38 guests at our small ceremony, but we're preparing ourselves for that number to decline if the spread of the virus continues. And here's the difficult part - we live on Maui, and over half of our guests will have to travel through multiple major airports and come in contact with many people to get here.
As hard as it is to come to terms with, our wedding can be rescheduled.
Our island community is delicate, and the risk of bringing more infection here could be devastating. My fiancé and I desperately want to protect our guests and our island, but we're not ready to let go of the hope that things will be better by the time our big day rolls around. As of right now, we're continuing with our current plans and holding off on making any major decisions until we can reevaluate the situation when it gets closer to our date. Since we planned a small event, we won't be out too much money. Our remaining balances aren't due until a month before our wedding, and the local vendors we're working with have been sensitive to the situation and willing to work with us, which is incredibly lucky. We've been discussing backup plans and decided we are willing to hold an even smaller event with his family and our tight-knit group of friends that already live on island, as long as my parents are still able to make it.
As much as we want to celebrate with our loved ones, we want to make sure they know they don't have to risk their health or expend finances they might not have due to various workplaces shutting down. As hard as it is to come to terms with, our wedding can be rescheduled, and protecting our guests means doing whatever is right for them when the date approaches.

And it both helps and breaks my heart knowing that I'm not alone. The wedding groups I'm a part of on Facebook are flooded with posts seeking advice about what to do, where to order cancelation and postponement cards, and general heartbreak over the unknown. While I know things can certainly be worse, it still saddens me to see so many couples who have been planning their dream weddings for ages seeing their plans shut down by something completely out of anyone's control. The happiest day of our lives has turned into one of the most unknown and confusing.
The main thing that's helping me through right now is remembering that I'm still marrying my best friend, one way or another. If we have to, we'll elope and celebrate with loved ones later on down the road, but our love won't be broken by a change in plans.
Joshua Jackson Says Reese Witherspoon and Kerry Washington Eased His Anxiety Over Becoming a Parent
Image Source: Getty / Tommaso Boddi
With his wife, Jodie Turner-Smith, just days away from her April 1 due date, soon-to-be dad Joshua Jackson is relying on his Little Fires Everywhere costars Kerry Washington and Reese Witherspoon for advice. Feeling anxious about Jodie giving birth during this uncertain time, he told Buzzfeed's AM to DM that he's been doing his best to prepare for his daughter's arrival.
"We were kind of social distancing anyway, just getting into the nesting phase," he said. "The only real difficult part right now is how to interface with the medical community. Obviously, we have to, and we are just trying to take that one day by day, to try to figure out what the best and healthiest way is. I've never been a parent before, so I'm not quite sure how much of this is just first-baby anxiety and how much of this is pandemic anxiety."
Aside from his obvious worries about the spread of the novel coronavirus, Joshua asked Reese and Kerry everything from getting the best healthcare to what he should be doing before the baby comes. "In the very beginning, I was like, who [do] I go to as an OB? What are the things I need to know now?" But with two moms on set, he had an amazing support system. "But also, as it got a little bit deeper into it, just, like, how do you integrate your home life?"
For Joshua, who keeps his private life, well, private, he was curious how Reese and Kerry balance their careers with being a parent. "I have always kept my personal life and my work life pretty separate," he explained. "But I don't think I want to do that going forward, because I want to obviously have my child around when I'm at work - and just asking them how they integrate those two things and how they create an environment inside a set environment that's a healthy place for a kid to be, because it's often not."
Joshua has Reese and Kerry to thank for keeping him grounded during his understandable times of uncertainty. After all, there are a lot of unknowns when becoming a parent for the first time. "Like, holy Moses! This is happening!" he said, and added of his costars' responses to his anxiety: "And [Reese and Kerry] just both being like, 'It's OK! This is normal! It's alright. Just breathe. You're going to be good.'"

I'm Wearing Pajama Sets 7 Days a Week, and This Loft Pick (For 40% Off!) Is My Favorite
Didn't you hear? Pajama sets are all the rage in home offices everywhere. OK, in mine it is, at least. You don't have to wear the same pair of grungy sweats every day. I love wearing a head-to-toe PJ look because it makes me feel matchy-matchy without sacrificing style. My current favorite is this Loft Silky Pajama Set ($48, originally $80) - it's on sale! The silky material feels so luxurious, and I have no shame wearing it for video conferences. Yes, I'm that girl.
This set comes in sizes XXS-XXL and is eligible for free shipping. My pair fits true to size. I love the rounded collar on the top and contrasting blue edges on the pants. They're machine washable, so don't stress about hang drying. Honestly, these pajamas feel like they should be crazy expensive, so I'm excited they're discounted.

When a Zoom Call Wouldn't Cut It, This Caravan of Cars Gave a Boy the Sweetest "Birthday Parade"
My beautiful nephew who was born very prematurely a year ago, is celebrating his 1 year birthday today - and they had a “birthday parade.” I’m sobbing. pic.twitter.com/0HAbtdl1Gc
- Justin Randall (@imjustinrandall) March 26, 2020
It's hard for any family having to celebrate a child's birthday during this time of extreme social distancing, but for Justin Randall's nephew, it was particularly bittersweet. The baby boy named Cam was born "very prematurely" a year ago, so this milestone was hard-fought and deserved much more fanfare than a Zoom conference call could offer.
While the family stood on their chalk-art-covered driveway, a caravan of cars, SUVs, and minivans slowly rolled down the street in a "birthday parade." As they drove past, the series of loved ones inside the vehicles waved, blew air kisses, and shouted "I love you, guys!" Some blasted nursery rhymes on the radio, others held festive signs out their open windows, others held streamers or attached rainbow-colored balloons to their door handles, and still more painted well wishes on their exteriors.
Even if Cam was too little to appreciate the gesture, it had a big impact on the family. Cam's big brother, Jake, could be heard in the background, shouting, "A balloon!" And their mom? You could almost hear the joyful tears in her voice as she encouraged her young kids to wave and say hi to the well-wishers.
As Justin noted on Twitter, "I'm sobbing." Yep, this celebration will be hard to top.
Jimmy Fallon's Kids Heckled His Tonight Show Monologue, but, Like, Do Better, Dad
Jimmy Fallon has really gotten into a rhythm with The Tonight Show: At Home. There's always a great Zoom interview with a self-isolating celebrity, it always ends with a trip down his cool indoor slide, and he always kicks things off with a monologue of topical jokes. But, are they funny? Without an audience to laugh at his coronavirus-themed routine, he's taken to adding his own laugh track or, as he did in the latest episode, asking his two kids to weigh in.
"If you like the joke, give it a thumbs up," Jimmy told his daughters – 6-year-old Winnie, who also happens to be the sole member of the show's current graphics department, and 5-year-old Franny – at the start of Thursday's episode. If they didn't like it, he suggested, they could stick out their tongue and blow a raspberry.
So, one after one, he delivered a joke and was met with nothing but raspberries from the peanut (or, popcorn, as it were) gallery behind him. Perhaps they just needed to google a picture of Ken Burns, or perhaps they should have waited until after the setup to cast judgment, or perhaps they shouldn't take his jokes about them ("I think my family is getting a little tired of me, too. This morning, they said, 'We know it's dangerous out there, Dad, but why don't you just give it a shot?'") too personally. But the results were always the same: a resounding "pppffhlill."
Throughout the episode, the girls also asked, "What are hashtags?" without sticking around for an answer, clomped up the steps in play shoes, and performed what Jimmy calls "goodnight music" on the piano.
They may be hecklers, but at least they are adorable ones.
Is Hand Sanitizer as Good as Soap? And More Questions Answered by a Handwashing Expert
Handwashing is important every day, but it's especially crucial during a pandemic like the novel coronavirus to help keep you and others safe. "The simple act of handwashing with soap is still the best defense that we have against coronavirus," Myriam Sidibe, PhD, a senior fellow at the Harvard Kennedy School and recognized handwashing expert, told POPSUGAR. The coronavirus is an enveloped virus - there's a protective layer around it - and washing with soap and water removes this envelope, causing the virus to die, she said.
Soap can help fight a lot of other "outbreak pathogens and common global killers like diarrheal disease and respiratory infections," Dr. Sidibe explained. In fact, handwashing with soap can reduce diarrheal rates by at least 40 percent, she noted, and reduce respiratory infections by somewhere in the mid-20-percent range.
News flash! Soap has been around forever - since 2800 BC, Dr. Sidibe said - and it is extremely effective at killing germs, so much so that she did an entire TED Talk about the power of handwashing. When it comes to the coronavirus, Dr. Sidibe, who actually spearheaded Global Handwashing Day, answered some of our scrubbing-specific questions. Read up!
How Often Should People Wash Their Hands?
"At any time, you can have up to 3,200 microbes on your hands, many of which are not harmful," Dr. Sidibe explained, but your hands can get recontaminated to the point they were at prior to washing after only about an hour. That's why, she said, it's important that you wash your hands as regularly as possible. At the very least, you should wash every time you use the bathroom and before you eat. That should be, she noted, about 10 to 12 times per day at minimum.
How Long Should I Wash My Hands?
The World Health Organization (WHO) suggests 40 seconds, and the CDC states that at least 20 seconds is essential for handwashing. Dr. Sidibe said 20 seconds (singing the "Happy Birthday" song twice) should be enough time if you're scrubbing your entire hands, and use a clean towel to remove any remaining germs.
Should You Still Wash Your Hands as Thoroughly Even If You Don't Leave the House?
Dr. Sidibe said you should be just as diligent about washing your hands even if you don't go out in public as much. The coronavirus, she said, is suggested to live on certain surfaces like stainless steel and plastic for days. Practicing good hygiene by making a habit of washing your hands is still important.
Are All Soaps Created Equal?
Yes. Dr. Sidibe said any hand soap or bar of soap you have in your house is fine. "A bar, liquids . . . it's all equivalent," she said.
How Much Soap Should You Use For Handwashing?
A drop of liquid soap - or a small amount of soap in general - is sufficient (so don't go using all those extra pumps!). The most important part, Dr. Sidibe said, is that you have enough to form a soapy lather all over your hands and that, again, you use a clean towel to dry them. Note: Dr. Sidibe said the water temperature doesn't matter.
Is Hand Sanitizer as Effective as Soap and Water?
A sanitizer that has at least 60 percent alcohol content is recommended, Dr. Sidibe said (the CDC says this, too). It should be your second line of defense against the coronavirus, she explained; washing with soap and water should still be your first line of defense because it's more effective in killing germs. But if you are going out in public and don't know if you'll have soap and water readily available to you, it's important to keep hand sanitizer on you, she said. Per WHO, you should be cleaning your hands with sanitizer for at least 20 seconds. You can find more guidelines for the use of hand sanitizer here.
What Is 1 Spot on the Hand That People Tend to Forget to Wash?
"People won't rub the top part of the hand," Dr. Sidibe said. "So I think it's important to make sure that you are washing and scrubbing the top as much as you're scrubbing inside the palm." Here's more information on the suggested way to wash your hands.
Is It Helpful to Keep Your Nails Short?
Dr. Sidibe said it could be helpful to have shorter nails since germs could, in theory, get under them. However, she wanted to stress the importance of following that 20-second rule and being thorough, which would include scrubbing under your nails anyway. "I don't want people to be paranoid as well because I think it's already really hard to keep a proper routine of doing handwashing with soap," she explained.
How Can We Make Washing Our Hands a Habit?
On average, four people out of five won't wash their hands after using the bathroom, Dr. Sidibe told POPSUGAR. We need to establish positive social norms to make handwashing easy to do, she said. A big part of that is increasing the availability of handwashing facilities and soap and water in countries that don't have the resources. And, in places where running water and soap are very much accessible, people aren't washing their hands as much as they should. Making handwashing desirable, too, is also key because, as data show, people tend to forget, she said.
There are ways, though, that you can start making handwashing a habit if you haven't already.
- Put up signs in places you'll see them. That could be when you first walk in the door, in your bathroom, etc.
- Change up the signs. The messages, Dr. Sidibe said, have to be surprising or else they'll start going unnoticed after a certain point. Here's a fun one, and we're sure Pinterest has tons of ideas.
- Make it fun. You can generate handwashing instructions set to your favorite song lyrics, for example. You could also be like Jimmy Fallon and make up your own song for 20 seconds.
- Remind kids especially about the power of soap. There are some fun and easy experiments to do with your kids in the kitchen, Dr. Sidibe said. Here's a glitter activity from a blogger (glitter equals germs, and you practice washing them off your hands).
"We need to normalize and celebrate handwashing," Dr. Sidibe concluded. And it starts with you becoming a stickler for that 20 seconds of thorough scrubbing and really enforcing it in your everyday life. Soap is powerful - remember that!

This Sweet Story About a Bear Will Help Explain Social Distancing to Even the Youngest Kids
Often, when I'm struggling with how to explain something to my children – whether it's emotional hardships like the death of a loved one or important issues like racism – I will turn to one of the simplest yet most profound resources available: children's books. It's always served as a solid starting place to read aloud from the pages of an illustrated story – and to take cues from the author's carefully crafted words – before embarking on an otherwise difficult conversation that my toddler or preschooler wouldn't be equipped to handle.
But as my young kids began to learn more and more about the current coronavirus outbreak, I've struggled with how to explain this "new normal" to them without relying on the gentle guidance of a children's book. No such hardcover story or pint-sized board book exists. But a fledgling author named Kim St. Lawrence created the next best thing.
She produced a video version of a children's book about social distancing called Time to Come In, Bear, and she shared it on YouTube for families to access for free.
The sweet story follows a bunny who has to explain to a bear why they have to stay inside. "The world caught a cold," the story begins. "You won't get the germs if you just stay at home." The animated narrative touches on many of the worries kids have right now, from how long this will last ("it isn't forever, Bear . . . just for a time") to why we can't see our friends and grandparents ("you miss them, I know"). It also explains that heroes are hard at work to "make the world alright."
And although the 90-second video can't possibly answer every question a kid would ask, it's just the starting point many parents need right now.

How a Gorgeous Boudoir Photo Shoot Empowered a Woman to Unapologetically Be Herself
In a world dominated by body standards that society deems acceptable, photographer Tara O'Meara wanted to shake things up, and so she started doing boudoir photography. "My inspiration is empowering all women to embrace what makes them themselves," Tara told POPSUGAR. When she began doing boudoir photography, she really wanted everyone to simply unapologetically be themselves. "There is so much negativity in the world, and women are putting a ton of pressure on themselves. Too often we find ourselves trying to fit into a box of the perfect friend, wife, mother, instead of celebrating what makes us, well us," said Tara.
"After my shoot I feel like I could conquer the world."
Tara's model for this shoot, Talyia, strongly agreed with Tara's views. "The purpose of the boudoir photo shoot to me is not to show how sexy you are to other people or to prove that you have to have minimal clothes on to be sexy," Talyia told POPSUGAR. "It is to empower you and show you how beautiful you are."
Talyia adds, "After my shoot I feel like I could conquer the world. It's not for your husband, not for your girlfriend, it's not for your partner. It's for you! To show how badass you truly are. And the pictures help remind you of it when some things get hard." Amen to that.
And no, sexy boudoir shoots aren't one-size-fits-all. "You don't have to be a size 2 and naked with a perfect body, you just be you. Be empowered by you, be loved by you," Talyia wrote in an Instagram post, and we could not agree more. Keep reading to see this fantastic boudoir photo shoot.
The Stimulus Bill Allows Pretax Spending on Period Products, and It's About Time
While lawmakers have been negotiating a spending package to provide assistance for a variety of needs amid the coronavirus outbreak, there's one policy change you may not have expected - and it'll result in massive savings for Americans who have periods. The $2 trillion economic relief plan passed this week will allow pretax spending on menstrual products, including tampons, pads, liners, cups, sponges, or similar products.
Previously, people were only permitted to use pretax funds for eligible health care-related expenses - and for some reason, period products were never deemed a healthcare expense. Instead, these expenses were limited to "the costs of diagnosis, cure, mitigation, treatment, or prevention of disease."
By re-classifying menstrual products as "medical expenses," this bill will let shoppers pay for their products with flexible spending accounts and health savings accounts, which use pretax dollars taken from workers' paychecks. The bill will also retroactively cover costs through January 1, 2020. As the new bill states, "Amounts paid for menstrual care products shall be treated as paid for medical care" for HSAs and Archer medical savings accounts. For FSAs and health reimbursement accounts, menstrual product costs "shall be treated as incurred for medical care."
Considering this has been a point of contention for at least 15 years, this change is a pretty big deal. The House had even passed a similar measure in July 2018, which designated menstrual products as qualifying expenses for pretax health plans. The provision was sponsored by Democratic Rep. Grace Meng of New York, who argued that "menstrual hygiene products are essential and necessary for women, and deserve to be items that are permitted to be purchased with health flexible spending account funds." Unfortunately, that bill was never taken up in Senate, but now the policy has been given a second chance.
While we can only hope that the tampon tax will be next, this alone feels like a big victory for those with menstrual periods everywhere.
