You Can Still Go Outside While Social Distancing, but You'll Need to Take Some Precautions

Being asked to stay at home can be challenging, particularly if you're dealing with a lot of nervous energy right now. With the 24-hour coverage of the coronavirus growing more unsettling every day, you may find yourself craving some sense of normalcy while practicing social distancing. The good news: if normalcy means getting some much-needed sunlight and fresh air, you can still venture out while keeping yourself and others safe.

"During this pandemic, it is still safe to go outside to get some fresh air and sun, as long as you continue to practice social distancing," Natasha Bhuyan, MD, a family physician and regional medical director at One Medical, told POPSUGAR. "That means staying at least six feet away from other people, whether you are going for a hike, walking your dog, or jogging in the neighborhood." But keep in mind, this might not be as simple as you'd think. "This might take some careful planning, especially for people who live in high-density areas," she said.

Dr. Bhuyan went on to explain that there are steps you can take to ensure you keep a safe distance from others. "This might include some awkward but important maneuvers," she said. For example, you may need to change the side of the street you're walking on if you see people headed your way - and while that may typically seem rude, health and safety (yours and theirs) takes precedence right now.

Additionally, this is not the time for a power walk with some friends. "You should not meet up with a friend to go for a walk unless you are intentionally keeping a physical distance from each other," Dr. Bhuyan said. "While it's hard to comprehend, we know that asymptomatic people might still be carriers of COVID-19 and they can infect others."

So, stay home to help prevent the spread and save lives - but get some fresh air for sure. Just make sure you're flying solo or with a furry friend. And remember, if you are walking your dog, try not to let people come up and pet them during this time. While everyone could use some puppy therapy, allowing a stranger to get that close could put you both at risk.

Fifth Harmony's "Work From Home" Is the Cardio Dance Workout You Need Right Now

With so many of us staying at home because of the coronavirus pandemic, finding fun (even free!) ways to exercise outside of the gym is more essential than ever. The Fitness Marshall has been delivering dance workouts to mega hits for years, and his choreographed routine to Fifth Harmony's "Work From Home" seems even more relevant now than it did in 2016.

If you're feeling a bit shut in and need a break from your Netflix binge, work up a sweat to "Work From Home." Then once you've mastered this routine, skip over to any of The Fitness Marshall's other workouts to keep the blood flowing.

Idaho Lawmakers Quietly Passed a Bill That Could Ban Transgender Girls From School Sports

As elected officials across the country worked on slowing the spread of the coronavirus, Idaho state legislators had other priorities. On March 16 - three days after the White House declared a national emergency, as cases of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) continued to climb - Idaho lawmakers pushed through a bill that would ban transgender girls and women from playing on school sports teams that align with their gender, and effectively compel any woman student-athlete to undergo an invasive pelvic exam in order to "prove" she is cisgender. The bill was passed by the state Senate in a 24-11 vote.

Now, Governor Brad Little has until Tuesday, March 31, to either veto House Bill 500 or sign it into law, a move that would result in an ongoing legal battle, with civil rights advocates already committed to filing a lawsuit. "We've been warning the state about that for weeks now," Ritchie Eppink, legal director of the ACLU of Idaho, told POPSUGAR. "The Idaho Attorney General warned the legislature about the bill's serious flaws as well." At a time when the nation is bracing for the economic impact of a global pandemic, litigation would only add to the burden. "It will cost Idaho's taxpayers considerably to defend this hateful bill," Eppink said.

Those consequences pale in comparison to those faced by the athletes themselves - and experts worry that the legislation could fuel even more attacks on the rights of the transgender community.

"If I Was a Trans Student Now, I Would Be Devastated"

Eppink described HB 500 as "a constitutional nightmare," noting that by preventing transgender girls and women from participating in athletic programs based on their gender, the legislation violates the Equal Protection Clause of the United States Constitution and the Idaho Constitution, in addition to Title IX, a federal law that protects students against discrimination.

That would be harmful enough, but the vague language in the bill opens the door for anyone - athletes on rival teams, parents, even teammates - to demand that any woman or girl athlete undergo a pelvic exam in order to remain on her team. "With this specific bill, there's no limit to who can accuse who of being transgender," Sara L. Swoboda, MD, an Idaho-based pediatrician, told POPSUGAR. "Anyone participating in female sports would be at risk of someone accusing you of being transgender for any reason, like if they think you're too good or they don't like you."

Even if HB 500 is vetoed, the discussion surrounding the legislation has already caused damaged that won't be easily repaired. "I think if I was a trans student now, I would be devastated to hear the testimony and the vile things that lawmakers are saying about trans youth," Chris Mosier, a transgender athlete and advocate, told POPSUGAR. "These young people and their families, their parents, and their peers have to listen to people debate whether or not they're real and whether or not they deserve the same treatment as the rest of their classmates."

"We know that no one is transitioning for athletic glory."

Mosier noted that the language used by lawmakers who support HB 500 - who often refer to trans girls as "biological boys" - invalidates the identities of trans people. "They're talking about boys playing girls' sports. It doesn't apply to the bill, but that's how they're trying to pass it," he said. One the most stunning comments: "[One representative] painted a picture that trans girls were just boys who couldn't make it on a boys' team and wanted to beat girls, when in fact we know that no one is transitioning for athletic glory," explained Mosier, who traveled to Idaho earlier this month to speak out against the legislation.

Mosier told POPSUGAR that the message from lawmakers was clear: "Trans teens are seen as a threat to sports, and to their peers, as if trans people are not people at all, but rather scary monsters with intentions of ruining girls' sports," he said. "This type of language and rhetoric emboldens community members to further misunderstand and mistreat transgender Idahoans."

"Sports Were the Place Where I Felt Most Like Myself"

Dr. Swoboda explained that the mere possibility of being forced to undergo an examination of internal and external genitalia would be enough to dissuade transgender teens from joining sports teams - and participation in sports often plays a crucial role in the psychological and mental well-being of this population. According to research gathered by The Trevor Project, transgender youth experience significantly higher rates of depression than their cisgender peers, and one in three transgender youth attempted suicide in 2018. Being a member of a team can be a protective factor.

"Kids who participate in activities like sports are happier, they do better in school, and they're more likely to go to college," Dr. Swoboda said. "Why would we exclude one of our most vulnerable populations from that resource?"

Eppink fears that the passage of the bill would have a profound impact on how transgender students are treated. "It will increase the already hostile school environments that trans students and women in general have to deal with on a day-to-day basis," he told POPSUGAR. "It's going to encourage the bullying and harassment that trans students already experience." A 2017 study found that nearly 84 percent of transgender students were bullied or harassed. Dr. Swoboda emphasized that acceptance by both one's peers and authority figures such as coaches is beneficial to the mental health of these teens.

As a young athlete, Mosier found his community through sports. "It was the place where I felt most like myself," he said. Being on a team gave him a sense of belonging, and helped him feel more accepted by his peers. "I know the transformational power of sports and of being on a team. That can greatly help with mental health and feeling supported and safe, whether [transgender teens] are out to their team or not," he said. Mosier said having the support of your peers as you work towards a common goal is something that transgender youth find in very few other places.

While the harm that's been inflicted on the transgender community in Idaho is devastating, there are also concerns that HB 500 could pave the way for more transphobic bills. "This is actually just the beginning, so it's critical that we stop this in its tracks so there's no momentum for lawmakers that are really trying to eliminate trans people from public spaces," Mosier told POPSUGAR.

The ACLU is prepared to fight, in hopes of deterring lawmakers across the nation from following Idaho's lead. "Hopefully the courts will stop this," Eppink said. "Because it's obviously unconstitutional and this is a crucial fight here in Idaho right now."

This Resistance Band Set Is Only $13, and It’s Powering My At-Home Workouts

Without access to my gym's wall of dumbbells, rack of barbells, or machinery, it's been a little difficult to continue my strength-training routine - the Instagram 10 push-up challenge is just not for me.

Then, I remembered the Letsfit Resistance Loop Bands ($13) I had stashed in my coffee-table drawer. I bought the resistance bands set a few months back, particularly for the days when I just couldn't get to the gym. Now that my gym is closed and I'm practicing social distancing, they're coming in handy.

On top of being compact (ideal for a small apartment), resistance bands can be used to make certain exercises a little more difficult, and they're amazing for targeting the glutes.

According to Harvard Health Publishing, resistance bands offer a wide range of controlled resistance and allow you to keep resistance in the up-and-down motions of certain exercises, like dumbbell curls. The Arthritis Foundation also lists bands as one of the best exercise tools for those suffering from arthritis.

This particular set includes five different 100 percent latex loop bands at varying resistance levels - x-light, light, medium, heavy and x-heavy - which come in a black mesh bag.

The brand notes that they can be used for anything from stretching and recovery to Pilates and strength training. I have been using the bands to boost my squats and hip raises, to up the intensity of squat jacks and planks, and during Pilates workouts. I plan on trying this arm series workout using the band, as well as adding this 15-minute routine into my schedule, too.

Of course, my favorite part about the set is the price tag - at only $13, it's a purchase I won't regret when I'm able to visit my gym once again.

8 Nail Polish Colors That Can Spike Your Happiness Levels With Just One Swipe

Marie Kondo achieves it by tidying up. Elle Woods gets hers in Brooke's Butt-Buster workout. Sometimes, learning what makes you happy means looking around - even if you're holed up in a tiny apartment with a dwindling list of TV shows to watch. For beauty enthusiasts, adding a punch of color to your everyday - with, say, your nail polish - can be a quick way to spark joy.

First, from a logical standpoint: "One of the reasons a fun manicure or nail polish can really boost your mood is because it's one of the things we see the most throughout the day," said Sigourney Nunez, manicurist and OPI's education manager. "Your nails and hands are always in view."

"In these unique times of quarantine, I would choose a color that makes me feel like I'm anywhere else other than my apartment."

There's also psychological proof that certain shades can provide a sense of optimism, calm, or relaxation. Surrounding yourself with warmer tones, for example, can make you feel safe and uplifted; cooler hues can help put you at ease. They key is to consider the mood you're hoping to strike. "In these unique times of quarantine, I would choose a color that makes me feel like I'm anywhere else other than my apartment," said Lisa Logan, celebrity nail artist and ambassador for Nails.Inc.

Ahead, we're breaking down the eight nail polish colors that can convince your brain to think happier thoughts. And if that doesn't work, you can always try them all together: "Using rainbow colors in your manicure is a simple way to inspire joy and happiness," said Nunez. (What, like it's hard?)

My Destination Wedding Is Weeks Away, and Here's How Coronavirus Is Affecting It

The stress of planning a wedding can be overwhelming already, but with the ongoing pandemic of coronavirus (COVID-19), my worry and anxiety have skyrocketed.

Our wedding is in June, which falls right outside of the CDC's eight-week proposed timeline for avoiding groups of 50 or more - but we know this could be extended. Currently, we're expecting 38 guests at our small ceremony, but we're preparing ourselves for that number to decline if the spread of the virus continues. And here's the difficult part - we live on Maui, and over half of our guests will have to travel through multiple major airports and come in contact with many people to get here.

As hard as it is to come to terms with, our wedding can be rescheduled.

Our island community is delicate, and the risk of bringing more infection here could be devastating. My fiancé and I desperately want to protect our guests and our island, but we're not ready to let go of the hope that things will be better by the time our big day rolls around. As of right now, we're continuing with our current plans and holding off on making any major decisions until we can reevaluate the situation when it gets closer to our date. Since we planned a small event, we won't be out too much money. Our remaining balances aren't due until a month before our wedding, and the local vendors we're working with have been sensitive to the situation and willing to work with us, which is incredibly lucky. We've been discussing backup plans and decided we are willing to hold an even smaller event with his family and our tight-knit group of friends that already live on island, as long as my parents are still able to make it.

As much as we want to celebrate with our loved ones, we want to make sure they know they don't have to risk their health or expend finances they might not have due to various workplaces shutting down. As hard as it is to come to terms with, our wedding can be rescheduled, and protecting our guests means doing whatever is right for them when the date approaches.

And it both helps and breaks my heart knowing that I'm not alone. The wedding groups I'm a part of on Facebook are flooded with posts seeking advice about what to do, where to order cancelation and postponement cards, and general heartbreak over the unknown. While I know things can certainly be worse, it still saddens me to see so many couples who have been planning their dream weddings for ages seeing their plans shut down by something completely out of anyone's control. The happiest day of our lives has turned into one of the most unknown and confusing.

The main thing that's helping me through right now is remembering that I'm still marrying my best friend, one way or another. If we have to, we'll elope and celebrate with loved ones later on down the road, but our love won't be broken by a change in plans.
