Never Have I Ever: Is Mindy Kaling's New Netflix Show Autobiographical? Here's What She Says

Mindy Kaling's new Netflix comedy, Never Have I Ever, is set to be one of the buzziest comedies of the year, not least because it's rumored to be about Kaling herself! Although the show tells a fictional story with fictional characters, Kaling has been very open about the fact that the show and its characters are inspired by her own early life as an Indian-American girl growing up in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Here's how much of Kaling's real life we can expect to see in the show.

At the heart of Never Have I Ever is Kaling's desire to tell a story about the kinds of characters she would have related to when she was a teenager, but that don't get portrayed very often. "Nerds are not only the wallflowers and the quiet ones," Kaling said at a Variety event. "We're ambitious, we have obnoxious personalities sometimes, we want to have sex and dreams like all the other kids." It's an experience, she explained, that she could relate to closely, which made the creative process even more special and personal. "I felt lucky to be able to do a show about an Indian nerd who's also badly behaved, to show that because I'm deeply familiar with it."

The show focuses on Devi, a first-generation Indian American teenage girl who is an overachieving, whip-smart high school sophomore who also happens to have a short temper that tends to get her into sticky situations. Canadian newcomer Maitreyi Ramakrishnan snagged the role from over 15,000 applicants who auditioned after Kaling posted an open casting call online. In the first trailer, Devi prays for the chance to go to a party with alcohol and drugs (so she can turn them down, of course), for a hot non-nerd boyfriend, and for a better handle on body hair.

Never Have I Ever debuts its first season on Apr. 27 on Netflix, and we know it'll make us laugh and think in the best way!

This F*cking Amazing Meditation Will Help You "Breathe Out the Bullsh*t"

I've never really gotten the hype about meditation. I've tried a handful of guided meditations that instructed me to focus on my breath or find my happy place, but personally, none of them did the trick for me. I figured I would just never fully grasp its power . . . until I listened to Jason Headley's "F*ck That: An Honest Meditation." Turns out, this direct, profanity-laced meditation was exactly what I needed to feel more zen.

When you press play, you'll be encouraged to take deep breaths and "feel the f*cking nonsense float away." Those distracting thoughts that pop into your head? They're "bullsh*t," he explains - so let them go. As someone who could use some inner peace right now, I found these two and half minutes soothing. Maybe you will, too.

Send My Warmest Regards to the Schitt's Creek Cast Who Watched the Series Finale Over Zoom

Here's your daily reminder that the Schitt's Creek cast is simply the best: the stars spent Tuesday night watching the Pop TV show's series finale over a Zoom video call. Dan Levy, Annie Murphy, Eugene Levy, Emily Hampshire, Noah Reid, Karen Robinson, Jennifer Robertson, and Sarah Levy virtually joined together from their various social distancing locations to enjoy the last episode together like the Rose's would've wanted. Now, I won't spoil the episode for all of you waiting for the Netflix drop (hopefully) later this year, but it warms my heart to know they got to commemorate such a special moment together - even from miles apart.

In addition to preparing for the series finale, the cast also put forward fundraising efforts this week to benefit Food Banks Canada and Feeding America in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. The cast surpassed their $150,000 goal in less than a week and continues to raise more money, showing once again they deserve our best wishes and warmest regards.

While this recipe isn't for everyday eating, calorie counts are much lower than more traditional recipes (256 calories per serving!). Best of all, these cupcakes don't taste vegan in the slightest - they're moist, sweet, and plain delicious.

Twyla Sands Is the Unsung Hero of Schitt's Creek

If Schitt's Creek characters were astrological signs, I'd like to be a Twyla Sun with an Alexis Moon rising. (Is that how astrology works? Don't @ me.) There's no shortage of commanding personalities in this tiny fictional town, and although I envy David's sweater collection and chuckle over Moira's vast vocabulary, it's Twyla I want to emulate at the end of the day. Twyla is a quiet but constant force for good, and I'm glad to see that after part one of the series finale, she's getting the recognition she deserves.

When viewers first meet Twyla (portrayed wonderfully by Sarah Levy), she might come across as a wallflower, but don't be mistaken - she is so much more than the girl behind the cafe counter. Yes, she is a listening ear for the Roses - as they rack up a hefty tab - but she is also strong in her own right.

We all need a Twyla in our lives.

Twyla frequently mentions her childhood throughout the show, and uh, it seemed pretty harrowing. Levy once joked that a Twyla spinoff would look a lot like Breaking Bad, and from what Twyla alludes to, that doesn't sound far off. Her mom had a string of bad boyfriends, her aunt is connected to paranormal activity, her cousin got trampled, she was banned from casinos as an unaccompanied minor - the list goes on. You might think a character with those experiences would be bitter, but no. If anything, Twyla is all the more earnest because of the things she's seen.

Twyla is also a good friend. Over the Pop TV show's six seasons, she serves as an advice-giver for most everyone who wanders into Café Tropical, but especially Alexis, with whom she forms an unlikely bond. Mutt Schitt (yes, a real character's name) be damned, these women with seemingly nothing in common share some of the most heartwarming moments the show has to offer. At first, Alexis arrived in Schitt's Creek with a poor perception of friendship and a self-serving attitude. I like to think Twyla helped change that.

I won't spoil the show for anyone who's waiting for the final season's Netflix drop, but just know that Twyla's generosity and kindness continues until the very end. She continues to be the type of woman who will write songs for her boyfriend, give Taro card readings, and stand up for the people she loves. What I mean to say is: we all need a Twyla in our lives, and if that spinoff show ever actually happens, you better believe I'll be tuning in.

30 Shows on Netflix That Chronic TV Bingers Should Try Watching While High

Don't ask us why some shows are infinitely better when you're smoking weed, because we don't have an answer. What we do know, however, is that some series on Netflix are basically made for watching while high. Don't get us wrong - all these series are just as fantastic when you're sober. But when you mix these series with weed, you're even more likely to get your mind blown (or get some serious munchies). We've put together a list of shows available to stream on Netflix that pair perfectly with cannabis, so next time you decide to Netflix and blaze, be sure to binge one of these.

With both Disney World and Disneyland temporarily closed, the chance to take a whirl on "It's a Small World" in real life is, for now, impossible. The French-Braid Ponytail Taking Over Instagram Right Now Is Actually SO Easy to Do

Nestled somewhere between the intricate plaited headband and your greasy, haven't-showered-in-a-week topknot, you'll find the ever-faithful french braid - a wildly easy style that, much to the wider world's delight, works even better on second (or third)-day hair. When you merge that look with a tucked-under low ponytail? Oh, baby, that's a hairstyle that practically sells itself.

"If you're bored with your bun or your ponytail, this is an easy look you can re-create on yourself," she told POPSUGAR.

Don't just take our word for it. Ahead, Brook is breaking down a full step-by-step to this french-braid ponytail - or, as we like to call it, your new favorite hairstyle to DIY at home.

I'm a Dietitian, and I Always Have Eggs in My Fridge - Here's Why

When people find out that I'm a registered dietitian-nutritionist, many assume that I love to grocery shop and cook. While I wish this was the case, it could not be further from the truth. My work is centered on nutrition, but I am also a mom and am constantly juggling things in my life. The last thing I want to do is make frequent trips to the grocery store or spend hours in the kitchen.

My grocery list may vary from week to week, but one item that always finds a place in my fridge is eggs. Brown shells, white shells, organic, or otherwise - as long as they're not cracked, those nutritious eggs are coming home with me. Here's why.

1. Eggs Have a Long Shelf-Life

When you need to limit trips to the grocery store, eggs are a must - they're a high-quality protein, and they last. Raw whole eggs in their shell will keep without losing quality for up to five weeks beyond the pack date if they're stored safely in the refrigerator, according to the American Egg Board.

You can also hard-boil a batch of eggs for quick grab-and-go snacks and to incorporate into meals throughout the week. Once cooked, hard-boiled eggs are safe to eat for up to a week when kept in the fridge. Once peeled, they're best eaten the same day.

If plans change and you realize you're not going to be able to plow through the eggs you've purchased within three weeks of bringing them home, you can also freeze them. Crack and beat the eggs until blended, pour them into freezer containers, seal the containers tightly, label with the number of eggs and the date, and then place them in the freezer. You can freeze them like this for up to a year. When you're ready to use them, simply defrost the eggs in the refrigerator and substitute 3 tablespoons thawed egg for 1 large fresh egg.

2. Eggs Are Nutrient Powerhouses

For just 70 calories each, eggs are a good or excellent source of eight essential nutrients. One large egg contains about six grams of protein. Eggs are considered a very high-quality source of protein, and they're unique in that they're also one of the best food sources of choline.

It's estimated that 90 percent of Americans do not meet the recommended intake of this important nutrient. Choline plays an important role in the development of the brain during pregnancy, it may help reduce the risk of cognitive decline later in life, and it helps prevents fat accumulation in the liver. No matter which stage of life you're in, choline is an important nutrient to consume, and eating egg yolks will help you meet the recommended intake.

Other nutrients like B vitamins, iodine, lutein, zeaxanthin, and vitamin D are also naturally found in eggs - think of them as a deliciously edible multivitamin.

3. Eggs Can Be Used Beyond a Basic Scramble

From tarts to frittatas, eggs are a versatile protein that can be included at breakfast, lunch, dinner, or even snack time with little fuss. If you're not one for fancy poaching and homemade Hollandaise (Few of us are!), check out these easy-breezy ideas for inspiration.

For breakfast:

  • Try beating an egg and cooking it in a microwave-safe mug for 45 seconds for a quick no-mess option.
  • Make a grab-and-go breakfast taco using pre-made tortillas, canned black beans, jarred salsa, and a scrambled egg.
  • Try making a breakfast pizza. Top English muffin halves with pizza sauce and cooked beaten eggs. Sprinkle with cheese and bake at 450 degrees for 5 minutes until cheese is melted.

For lunch:

  • Create an egg salad sandwich using pre-boiled eggs, a bit of mayo, and cracked pepper. Spice it up however you like!
  • Top a classic salad with halved hard-boiled eggs for a quick addition of protein.
  • Cook crustless quiches ahead of time, and heat them in the microwave at lunchtime. Enjoy them with a side salad for a quick and satisfying meal. Add ingredients like cheese, ham, mushrooms, or whatever else you like in your recipe.

For snack:

  • Whip up some pickled eggs for a surprising color and taste. Combine beet juice, 2 cups vinegar, 1 cup sugar, and 1 cinnamon stick in a medium saucepan and simmer until sugar is dissolved. Add cooked beet juice combination to 8 peeled hard-boiled eggs in a heat-resistant jar, cover, and let them cool and marinate in the refrigerator.
  • Make a veggie egg pop (they're great for kids), by sticking a celery stalk into a peeled hard-boiled egg, then serving with a variety of dips. Hummus and guacamole are both great choices.

For dinner:

  • Instead of using chicken in a classic Asian lettuce wrap, use eggs instead! Cook eggs with vegetables like diced red peppers and onions as the filling, and top with a touch of jarred teriyaki for a meatless dinner that is sure to please.
  • Make shakshuka using canned tomatoes and dried spices you already have in your cabinet.
  • Make a classic meatloaf with hard boiled eggs in the middle for an extra boost of nutrition.
