Thank You, Dwyane Wade, For Showing Us All How to Make Deep-Fried Red Velvet Oreos
If you're currently reading this while standing in front of an open fridge and trying to decide what to snack on next (aka my routine 10 times a day), I'd like to direct your attention to Dwyane Wade's Instagram account. In a post on Wednesday, Dwyane shared a video of himself cooking up a treat so indulgent that I need a glass of milk just looking at it: deep-fried, red velvet Double Stuf Oreos. (In the caption, Dwayne joked that sweets are his worst enemy.)
The recipe begins by creating a red velvet cake batter from scratch, which includes combining the following ingredients:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 cups milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar
- 2 eggs (lightly beaten)
- 1 teaspoon cocoa powder
- 1/2 teaspoon red food coloring
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
Once the red velvet cake batter is made, dip your Double Stuf Oreos into the mixture until fully coated. Next, deep fry each Oreo for about one minute or until the bubbles around the edge of the cookie start to disappear. Gabrielle and the rest of the family definitely have a delicious dessert to look forward to. See Dwyane's full video here and try the recipe for yourself.
Semana Santa Has Changed for Mi Familia, But This Year We’re Going Back to Basics - Virtually
Ever since mis hermanos y yo became adults, Easter at home took a different turn. We all followed our dreams, which took us to different countries, and things obviously changed. They'll be a new type of different this year, so I'm looking back on old traditions to create new ones in which we all can be together - even if it's virtually.
When we were little we'd get the whole Semana Santa off, and retreat just outside of Santo Domingo - where we lived - in a modest house my dad built from the ground up that became our refuge in a way.
Our days were very low key, with tíos and tías that were not really blood related - but who we still considered family - popping up here and there to hang out, take a dip in the pool, grill some meat on the BBQ, and have some drinks.
On Maundy Thursday we'd drive to our church in the city for "el lavado de los pies" and after mass, we'd go church hopping to see how each place of worship was celebrating Holy Week. At night, we'd go back to our refuge. Friday and Saturday were very quiet, as we were supposed to be mourning the death of Jesus, so we weren't allowed to be loud, play music that wasn't classical music, or take part in anything that resembled a celebration.
Related: Why Semana Santa Was More Than Spring Break in My Household
At night, my siblings and I would watch the many movies about the passion of Christ that the local channels would broadcast, and anxiously wait for Easter. On Easter Sunday my mom would surprise us with kits to decorate our own Easter eggs, and then my siblings and I had to go get ready for la visita - there was always visita coming that day.
As we got ready, my parents hid the eggs in the backyard, and then we had to go find them. Once the visita arrived, the music would get louder, dancing would ensue, and the whole day felt like a big, happy party. Late in the afternoon, we'd pack up and head back to the city, stopping at church first for the Domingo de Resurrección mass, which was another big celebration where hugs, kisses, and congratulations floated around in a cheerful environment.
As my siblings and I got older and went to college, Semana Santa became a long weekend instead of the whole week, from Maundy Thursday to Easter Sunday. My parents would try to scope where most of our friends would be spending their days off so we could all have a nice family-friends balance, and the only rule now was that on Friday we were not allowed to party, and we had to wait until at least 10pm on Saturday before we went out, out of respect for Jesus. On Sunday, family time - most likely lunch - was mandatory.

Eventually, my siblings and I moved out to different countries - all 3 of us - so Easter became more of a "celebrate how you can" holiday. However, with the world's turn of events, we've been trying to go back to the things that really make us feel safe, which for us, is family. We've agreed on a Zoom lunch/dinner - since we're in different time zones too - where everyone is required to cook something to bring to the virtual table.
Casual attire is preferred, just so we can get out of our PJs and actually put some effort, and our best attitude is required. As for me in particular, I think I'll also live stream a mass even though I'm not necessarily the most religious person anymore. I do think that holding onto the things from your past that made you comfortable can bring a lot of peace, and after all, I was taught that this holiday is about Jesus anyways, so might as well honor that in the process.
Florence Pugh Won't Tolerate Trolls Bullying BF Zach Braff: "Being Hateful Is Not Trendy"
Florence Pugh has no tolerance for bullying and unwanted criticism of her relationship with Zach Braff. In a rare move, the 24-year-old Little Women actress opened up about her dating life with a personal video on Instagram on Wednesday. She explained that earlier in the week she posted a photo of her boyfriend for his 45th birthday and was met with "horrid" comments "hurling abuse" towards him and their 21-year age gap.
"It was the first time in my entire Instagram life that I've had to turn off the comments on my page," Florence explained. She reiterated that her page does not stand for bullying, adding, "I've only been an Instagram page that tries to bring some light and tries to be positive and tries to be positive."
"During this time when we really all need to be together, we need to be supporting one another, we need to be loving one another," she said. "The world is aching and the world is dying and a few of you decided to bully for no reason." She followed this sentiment by saying, "I do not need you to tell me who I should and should not love, and I would never in my life, ever, ever tell anyone who they can and cannot love. It is not your place, and really it has nothing to do with you." Her video received messages of support from fellow celebrities like Ariana Grande, who wrote, "Oh I love and appreciate u so much."
Florence and Zach were first linked together when they were spotted holding hands in April 2019. They've maintained a relatively under-the-radar relationship since, with the rare exception of posts on social media like Florence's birthday tribute. Watch the clip in full below.
Never Have I Ever: Is Mindy Kaling's New Netflix Show Autobiographical? Here's What She Says
Mindy Kaling's new Netflix comedy, Never Have I Ever, is set to be one of the buzziest comedies of the year, not least because it's rumored to be about Kaling herself! Although the show tells a fictional story with fictional characters, Kaling has been very open about the fact that the show and its characters are inspired by her own early life as an Indian-American girl growing up in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Here's how much of Kaling's real life we can expect to see in the show.
At the heart of Never Have I Ever is Kaling's desire to tell a story about the kinds of characters she would have related to when she was a teenager, but that don't get portrayed very often. "Nerds are not only the wallflowers and the quiet ones," Kaling said at a Variety event. "We're ambitious, we have obnoxious personalities sometimes, we want to have sex and dreams like all the other kids." It's an experience, she explained, that she could relate to closely, which made the creative process even more special and personal. "I felt lucky to be able to do a show about an Indian nerd who's also badly behaved, to show that because I'm deeply familiar with it."
The show focuses on Devi, a first-generation Indian American teenage girl who is an overachieving, whip-smart high school sophomore who also happens to have a short temper that tends to get her into sticky situations. Canadian newcomer Maitreyi Ramakrishnan snagged the role from over 15,000 applicants who auditioned after Kaling posted an open casting call online. In the first trailer, Devi prays for the chance to go to a party with alcohol and drugs (so she can turn them down, of course), for a hot non-nerd boyfriend, and for a better handle on body hair.
Never Have I Ever debuts its first season on Apr. 27 on Netflix, and we know it'll make us laugh and think in the best way!

Grab a Stability Ball, and Press Play on These Follow-Along Workout Videos
There are so many exercises you can use a stability ball for, especially when it comes to targeting your core. Why? Because this fitness tool, otherwise known as an exercise or Swiss ball, challenges your balance and stability, as the name suggests. And it's not just for your core; moves like lunges and back extensions are made more difficult when an exercise ball is involved.
Ahead, check out workouts straight from trainers on YouTube utilizing a stability ball. They range from four to 23 minutes long, so you can do them in no time. We also included a 20-minute yoga sequence using an exercise ball for stretches. Plus, try these workout videos using medicine balls - different from a stability ball - if you're in search of more variety.

This F*cking Amazing Meditation Will Help You "Breathe Out the Bullsh*t"
I've never really gotten the hype about meditation. I've tried a handful of guided meditations that instructed me to focus on my breath or find my happy place, but personally, none of them did the trick for me. I figured I would just never fully grasp its power . . . until I listened to Jason Headley's "F*ck That: An Honest Meditation." Turns out, this direct, profanity-laced meditation was exactly what I needed to feel more zen.
When you press play, you'll be encouraged to take deep breaths and "feel the f*cking nonsense float away." Those distracting thoughts that pop into your head? They're "bullsh*t," he explains - so let them go. As someone who could use some inner peace right now, I found these two and half minutes soothing. Maybe you will, too.

Send My Warmest Regards to the Schitt's Creek Cast Who Watched the Series Finale Over Zoom
Here's your daily reminder that the Schitt's Creek cast is simply the best: the stars spent Tuesday night watching the Pop TV show's series finale over a Zoom video call. Dan Levy, Annie Murphy, Eugene Levy, Emily Hampshire, Noah Reid, Karen Robinson, Jennifer Robertson, and Sarah Levy virtually joined together from their various social distancing locations to enjoy the last episode together like the Rose's would've wanted. Now, I won't spoil the episode for all of you waiting for the Netflix drop (hopefully) later this year, but it warms my heart to know they got to commemorate such a special moment together - even from miles apart.
In addition to preparing for the series finale, the cast also put forward fundraising efforts this week to benefit Food Banks Canada and Feeding America in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. The cast surpassed their $150,000 goal in less than a week and continues to raise more money, showing once again they deserve our best wishes and warmest regards.
