Semana Santa Has Changed For Mi Familia, but This Year, We’re Going Back to Basics - Virtually
Ever since mis hermanos y yo became adults, Easter at home took a different turn. We all followed our dreams, which took us to different countries, and things obviously changed. They'll be a new type of different this year, so I'm looking back on old traditions to create new ones in which we all can be together - even if it's virtually.
When we were little we'd get the whole Semana Santa off, and retreat just outside of Santo Domingo - where we lived - in a modest house my dad built from the ground up that became our refuge in a way.
Our days were very low key, with tíos and tías that were not really blood related - but who we still considered family - popping up here and there to hang out, take a dip in the pool, grill some meat on the BBQ, and have some drinks.
On Maundy Thursday we'd drive to our church in the city for "el lavado de los pies" and after mass, we'd go church hopping to see how each place of worship was celebrating Holy Week. At night, we'd go back to our refuge. Friday and Saturday were very quiet, as we were supposed to be mourning the death of Jesus, so we weren't allowed to be loud, play music that wasn't classical music, or take part in anything that resembled a celebration.

At night, my siblings and I would watch the many movies about the passion of Christ that the local channels would broadcast, and anxiously wait for Easter. On Easter Sunday my mom would surprise us with kits to decorate our own Easter eggs, and then my siblings and I had to go get ready for la visita - there was always visita coming that day.
As we got ready, my parents hid the eggs in the backyard, and then we had to go find them. Once the visita arrived, the music would get louder, dancing would ensue, and the whole day felt like a big, happy party. Late in the afternoon, we'd pack up and head back to the city, stopping at church first for the Domingo de Resurrección mass, which was another big celebration where hugs, kisses, and congratulations floated around in a cheerful environment.
As my siblings and I got older and went to college, Semana Santa became a long weekend instead of the whole week, from Maundy Thursday to Easter Sunday. My parents would try to scope where most of our friends would be spending their days off so we could all have a nice family-friends balance, and the only rule now was that on Friday we were not allowed to party, and we had to wait until at least 10pm on Saturday before we went out, out of respect for Jesus. On Sunday, family time - most likely lunch - was mandatory.

Eventually, my siblings and I moved out to different countries - all 3 of us - so Easter became more of a "celebrate how you can" holiday. However, with the world's turn of events, we've been trying to go back to the things that really make us feel safe, which for us, is family. We've agreed on a Zoom lunch/dinner - since we're in different time zones too - where everyone is required to cook something to bring to the virtual table.
Casual attire is preferred, just so we can get out of our PJs and actually put some effort, and our best attitude is required. As for me in particular, I think I'll also live stream a mass even though I'm not necessarily the most religious person anymore. I do think that holding onto the things from your past that made you comfortable can bring a lot of peace, and after all, I was taught that this holiday is about Jesus anyways, so might as well honor that in the process.
Here's Where You Can Watch Old Episodes of Punk'd Before the Reboot Premieres
Punk'd is back, y'all, and no, you aren't being "punk'd" right now. This practical joke reality series first debuted on MTV back in 2003 and ran through 2007 with Ashton Kutcher serving as producer and host. In the series, he'd pull hilarious pranks on his fellow celebs, and though the series was revived a few different times (once in 2012 by MTV, and again in 2013 by BET), nothing could ever really beat the original series - except maybe until now. In January 2020, it was announced that a new Punk'd reboot will premiere on Quibi with Chance the Rapper at the helm, and we're definitely down to give this reboot a chance (LOL). Of course, before we fully dive into the new series, which premiered April 6, it feels necessary to rewatch all of Ashton Kutcher's old episodes first.
Luckily, if you're looking to binge the first nine seasons of Punk'd, you can do it all in one place. Amazon Prime has all nine seasons available to watch - though we're sorry to say they're not all available to stream for free. For the first four seasons, you can either purchase individual episodes or the entire season, but for seasons five through nine, you have the option to stream for free with MTV Hits on Amazon. A subscription to MTV Hits on Amazon costs $5.99 a month and gives you access to a ton of classic MTV reality series, like Laguna Beach, Jersey Shore, The Challenge, and more. You can also get a seven-day free trial to MTV Hits, so if you think you can watch five seasons of Punk'd in seven days, then go for it.
Don't get us wrong - we're just as excited for this Punk'd reboot as Chance the Rapper. As he said in a press statement, "Punk'd is one of MTV's most iconic franchises. I grew up watching this show and it's surreal to be in the driver's seat this time around on Quibi." And we're ready to come along for the ride . . . after we revisit all of Kutcher's classic pranks.

I'm a Physician's Wife, and This Is the Most Important Thing You Can Do to Support Doctors
My husband is an ob-gyn at one of the largest hospitals in Detroit, which has seen a surge in cases of COVID-19. For now, he continues to see patients on the ob-gyn floor, visiting the emergency room only for pregnancy- or gynecology-related consults, which occasionally involve patients who are infected with the novel coronavirus. But as the hospital becomes more overwhelmed with cases of COVID-19, strategic measures are being put in place that may eventually require him to assist his fellow doctors and nurses in treating those who are sick.
As the infection rate skyrockets and the death toll mounts, I keep reminding myself that my husband is healthy, and his body is capable of fighting off a virus, however novel it may be. Even if he were to transmit the virus to me or our young daughter, we would likely recover without experiencing any complications, as most people do. It has taken some time, but today I'm not nearly as worried about us as I am about other healthcare workers and the patients who truly need care.
Because I'm married to a doctor, I know more about hospital policies and what's happening on the front lines than most. I know that healthcare professionals are even more exhausted than usual from treating an inordinate number of patients. I know that at times doctors and nurses haven't been able to access the personal protective equipment they need. And I also know that many patients - and those who aren't sick, for that matter - ignore the recommendations of doctors. In this case, those recommendations could help treat and prevent the spread of a deadly virus.
Together we can ease the burden on healthcare workers and overcome COVID-19, but it will take all of us.
Every medical doctor has taken an oath to care for patients to the best of their abilities. The doctors I know would never break that oath. When my husband graduated from medical school, I watched as seasoned physicians and anxious interns alike recited the oath with their whole heart, with tears in their eyes, and with every intention of living up to it. Now, as doctors turn that promise into action, they'll push through the exhaustion in order to help the growing number of patients who fill their ERs. They'll work without a mask if needed, and in turn, sacrifice holding their babies at night. And they'll continue to care for those patients who come back worse than when they left, no matter the circumstances that led them there.
The Hippocratic Oath says, "I will respect the hard-won scientific gains of those physicians in whose steps I walk, and gladly share such knowledge as is mine with those who are to follow." I see this pledge in the eyes of masked physicians across the world, as they study what others have learned about this virus and then treat patients without hesitation, no matter how mentally or physically draining it may be.
Out of respect for the healthcare professionals who are working tirelessly to protect us, let's make the same promise to them. Let's vow to respect the hard-won scientific gains they've made in understanding COVID-19 and put those recommendations into practice in our own lives - and let's make sure our friends, family, and neighbors do the same. Together we can ease the burden on healthcare workers and overcome COVID-19, but it will take all of us.

Add a Fun Twist to Easter With These Free Scavenger Hunt Printables
If you're struggling to find ways to make this year's Easter feel joyful despite practicing social distancing from extended family and community, something as simple as switching up your family's Easter egg hunt can add some much needed excitement. Scavenger hunts require kids to think critically and problem solve. Plus, the thrill of the hunt can be just as rewarding as finally getting their hands on their Easter baskets!
How to Set Up The Hunt
Start by printing out the clue cards. We've rounded up five free Easter scavenger hunts that you can download and print at home, depending on which version works best for your family.
Next, hide the clues! You can either hide them in the open or tuck them inside plastic Easter eggs and hide those. If you have more than one child, try color coding the plastic eggs so that each child is assigned one color. Mix up the order of the clues and have kids only pick up eggs in their color. Make sure each child has the same clue as their last clue.

49 Beauty Brands That Are Giving Back During the Coronavirus Pandemic
With COVID-19 (coronavirus) putting a halt to everyday life for millions of people around the world, some beauty brands are taking action against the pandemic. As an increasing amount of retailers announced indefinite closures of their store locations in the US and beyond earlier this week, others are using this as an opportunity to give back.
A handful of our favorite brands, from Farmacy to Peace Out Skin Care, have redirected some of their focus to those directly affected by the disease, whether it be people who are unable to work and provide for themselves due to lockdown policies or healthcare workers who are currently on the frontlines of the crisis. Read ahead to see which beauty brands are providing charity for those affected by COVID-19, then head over here to find out how you can help.
POPSUGAR aims to give you the most accurate and up-to-date information about the coronavirus, but details and recommendations about this pandemic may have changed since publication. For the latest information on COVID-19, please check out resources from the WHO, CDC, and local public health departments.

Florence Pugh Won't Tolerate Trolls Bullying BF Zach Braff: "Being Hateful Is Not Trendy"
Florence Pugh has no tolerance for bullying and unwanted criticism of her relationship with Zach Braff. In a rare move, the 24-year-old Little Women actress opened up about her dating life with a personal video on Instagram on Wednesday. She explained that earlier in the week she posted a photo of her boyfriend for his 45th birthday and was met with "horrid" comments "hurling abuse" towards him and their 21-year age gap.
"It was the first time in my entire Instagram life that I've had to turn off the comments on my page," Florence explained. She reiterated that her page does not stand for bullying, adding, "I've only been an Instagram page that tries to bring some light and tries to be positive and tries to be positive."
"During this time when we really all need to be together, we need to be supporting one another, we need to be loving one another," she said. "The world is aching and the world is dying and a few of you decided to bully for no reason." She followed this sentiment by saying, "I do not need you to tell me who I should and should not love, and I would never in my life, ever, ever tell anyone who they can and cannot love. It is not your place, and really it has nothing to do with you." Her video received messages of support from fellow celebrities like Ariana Grande, who wrote, "Oh I love and appreciate u so much."
Florence and Zach were first linked together when they were spotted holding hands in April 2019. They've maintained a relatively under-the-radar relationship since, with the rare exception of posts on social media like Florence's birthday tribute. Watch the clip in full below.
Thank You, Dwyane Wade, For Showing Us All How to Make Deep-Fried Red Velvet Oreos
If you're currently reading this while standing in front of an open fridge and trying to decide what to snack on next (aka my routine 10 times a day), I'd like to direct your attention to Dwyane Wade's Instagram account. In a post on Wednesday, Dwyane shared a video of himself cooking up a treat so indulgent that I need a glass of milk just looking at it: deep-fried, red velvet Double Stuf Oreos. (In the caption, Dwayne joked that sweets are his worst enemy.)
The recipe begins by creating a red velvet cake batter from scratch, which includes combining the following ingredients:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 cups milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar
- 2 eggs (lightly beaten)
- 1 teaspoon cocoa powder
- 1/2 teaspoon red food coloring
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
Once the red velvet cake batter is made, dip your Double Stuf Oreos into the mixture until fully coated. Next, deep fry each Oreo for about one minute or until the bubbles around the edge of the cookie start to disappear. Gabrielle and the rest of the family definitely have a delicious dessert to look forward to. See Dwyane's full video here and try the recipe for yourself.

Never Have I Ever: Is Mindy Kaling's New Netflix Show Autobiographical? Here's What She Says
Mindy Kaling's new Netflix comedy, Never Have I Ever, is set to be one of the buzziest comedies of the year, not least because it's rumored to be about Kaling herself! Although the show tells a fictional story with fictional characters, Kaling has been very open about the fact that the show and its characters are inspired by her own early life as an Indian-American girl growing up in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Here's how much of Kaling's real life we can expect to see in the show.
At the heart of Never Have I Ever is Kaling's desire to tell a story about the kinds of characters she would have related to when she was a teenager, but that don't get portrayed very often. "Nerds are not only the wallflowers and the quiet ones," Kaling said at a Variety event. "We're ambitious, we have obnoxious personalities sometimes, we want to have sex and dreams like all the other kids." It's an experience, she explained, that she could relate to closely, which made the creative process even more special and personal. "I felt lucky to be able to do a show about an Indian nerd who's also badly behaved, to show that because I'm deeply familiar with it."
The show focuses on Devi, a first-generation Indian American teenage girl who is an overachieving, whip-smart high school sophomore who also happens to have a short temper that tends to get her into sticky situations. Canadian newcomer Maitreyi Ramakrishnan snagged the role from over 15,000 applicants who auditioned after Kaling posted an open casting call online. In the first trailer, Devi prays for the chance to go to a party with alcohol and drugs (so she can turn them down, of course), for a hot non-nerd boyfriend, and for a better handle on body hair.
Never Have I Ever debuts its first season on Apr. 27 on Netflix, and we know it'll make us laugh and think in the best way!
