Never Have I Ever: Is Mindy Kaling's New Netflix Show Autobiographical? Here's What She Says

Mindy Kaling's new Netflix comedy, Never Have I Ever, is set to be one of the buzziest comedies of the year, not least because it's rumored to be about Kaling herself! Although the show tells a fictional story with fictional characters, Kaling has been very open about the fact that the show and its characters are inspired by her own early life as an Indian-American girl growing up in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Here's how much of Kaling's real life we can expect to see in the show.

At the heart of Never Have I Ever is Kaling's desire to tell a story about the kinds of characters she would have related to when she was a teenager, but that don't get portrayed very often. "Nerds are not only the wallflowers and the quiet ones," Kaling said at a Variety event. "We're ambitious, we have obnoxious personalities sometimes, we want to have sex and dreams like all the other kids." It's an experience, she explained, that she could relate to closely, which made the creative process even more special and personal. "I felt lucky to be able to do a show about an Indian nerd who's also badly behaved, to show that because I'm deeply familiar with it."

The show focuses on Devi, a first-generation Indian-American teenage girl who is an overachieving, whip-smart high school sophomore who also happens to have a short temper that tends to get her into sticky situations. Canadian newcomer Maitreyi Ramakrishnan snagged the role from over 15,000 applicants who auditioned after Kaling posted an open casting call online. In the first trailer, Devi prays for the chance to go to a party with alcohol and drugs (so she can turn them down, of course), for a hot non-nerd boyfriend, and for a better handle on body hair.

Never Have I Ever debuts its first season on Apr. 27 on Netflix, and we know it'll make us laugh and think in the best way!

Semana Santa Has Changed For Mi Familia, but This Year, We’re Going Back to Basics - Virtually

Ever since mis hermanos y yo became adults, Easter at home took a different turn. We all followed our dreams, which took us to different countries, and things obviously changed. They'll be a new type of different this year, so I'm looking back on old traditions to create new ones in which we all can be together - even if it's virtually.

When we were little we'd get the whole Semana Santa off, and retreat just outside of Santo Domingo - where we lived - in a modest house my dad built from the ground up that became our refuge in a way.

Our days were very low key, with tíos and tías that were not really blood related - but who we still considered family - popping up here and there to hang out, take a dip in the pool, grill some meat on the BBQ, and have some drinks.

On Maundy Thursday we'd drive to our church in the city for "el lavado de los pies" and after mass, we'd go church hopping to see how each place of worship was celebrating Holy Week. At night, we'd go back to our refuge. Friday and Saturday were very quiet, as we were supposed to be mourning the death of Jesus, so we weren't allowed to be loud, play music that wasn't classical music, or take part in anything that resembled a celebration.

Related: Why Semana Santa Was More Than Spring Break in My Household

At night, my siblings and I would watch the many movies about the passion of Christ that the local channels would broadcast, and anxiously wait for Easter. On Easter Sunday my mom would surprise us with kits to decorate our own Easter eggs, and then my siblings and I had to go get ready for la visita - there was always visita coming that day.

As we got ready, my parents hid the eggs in the backyard, and then we had to go find them. Once the visita arrived, the music would get louder, dancing would ensue, and the whole day felt like a big, happy party. Late in the afternoon, we'd pack up and head back to the city, stopping at church first for the Domingo de Resurrección mass, which was another big celebration where hugs, kisses, and congratulations floated around in a cheerful environment.

As my siblings and I got older and went to college, Semana Santa became a long weekend instead of the whole week, from Maundy Thursday to Easter Sunday. My parents would try to scope where most of our friends would be spending their days off so we could all have a nice family-friends balance, and the only rule now was that on Friday we were not allowed to party, and we had to wait until at least 10pm on Saturday before we went out, out of respect for Jesus. On Sunday, family time - most likely lunch - was mandatory.

Eventually, my siblings and I moved out to different countries - all 3 of us - so Easter became more of a "celebrate how you can" holiday. However, with the world's turn of events, we've been trying to go back to the things that really make us feel safe, which for us, is family. We've agreed on a Zoom lunch/dinner - since we're in different time zones too - where everyone is required to cook something to bring to the virtual table.

Casual attire is preferred, just so we can get out of our PJs and actually put some effort, and our best attitude is required. As for me in particular, I think I'll also live stream a mass even though I'm not necessarily the most religious person anymore. I do think that holding onto the things from your past that made you comfortable can bring a lot of peace, and after all, I was taught that this holiday is about Jesus anyways, so might as well honor that in the process.

If You Have Never Seen the Original Punk'd, You Need to Watch It ASAP - Here's How

Punk'd is back, y'all, and no, you aren't being "punk'd" right now. This practical joke reality series first debuted on MTV back in 2003 and ran through 2007, with Ashton Kutcher serving as producer and host. In the series, he'd pull hilarious pranks on his fellow celebs, and though the series was revived a few different times (once in 2012 by MTV, and again in 2013 by BET), nothing could ever really beat the original series - except maybe until now. In January 2020, it was announced that a new Punk'd reboot will premiere on Quibi with Chance the Rapper at the helm, and we're definitely down to give this reboot a chance (LOL). Of course, before we fully dive into the new series, which premiered April 6, it feels necessary to rewatch all of Ashton Kutcher's old episodes first.

Luckily, if you're looking to binge the first nine seasons of Punk'd, you can do it all in one place. Amazon Prime has all nine seasons available to watch - though we're sorry to say they're not all available to stream for free. For the first four seasons, you can either purchase individual episodes or the entire season, but for seasons five through nine, you have the option to stream for free with MTV Hits on Amazon. A subscription to MTV Hits on Amazon costs $5.99 a month and gives you access to a ton of classic MTV reality series, like Laguna Beach, Jersey Shore, The Challenge, and more. You can also get a seven-day free trial to MTV Hits, so if you think you can watch five seasons of Punk'd in seven days, then go for it.

Don't get us wrong - we're just as excited for this Punk'd reboot as Chance the Rapper. As he said in a press statement, "Punk'd is one of MTV's most iconic franchises. I grew up watching this show and it's surreal to be in the driver's seat this time around on Quibi." And we're ready to come along for the ride . . . after we revisit all of Kutcher's classic pranks.

Thank You, Dwyane Wade, For Showing Us All How to Make Deep-Fried Red Velvet Oreos

If you're currently reading this while standing in front of an open fridge and trying to decide what to snack on next (aka my routine 10 times a day), I'd like to direct your attention to Dwyane Wade's Instagram account. In a post on Wednesday, Dwyane shared a video of himself cooking up a treat so indulgent that I need a glass of milk just looking at it: deep-fried, red velvet Double Stuf Oreos. (In the caption, Dwayne joked that sweets are his worst enemy.)

The recipe begins by creating a red velvet cake batter from scratch, which includes combining the following ingredients:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar
  • 2 eggs, lightly beaten
  • 1 teaspoon cocoa powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon red food coloring
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt

Once the red velvet cake batter is made, dip your Double Stuf Oreos into the mixture until fully coated. Next, deep-fry each Oreo for about one minute or until the bubbles around the edge of the cookie start to disappear. Gabrielle and the rest of the family definitely have a delicious dessert to look forward to. See Dwyane's full video here and try the recipe for yourself.

The Olive & June Manicure Kit Is, Hands Down, the Best Thing I've Bought Recently

If there is one beauty and self-care ritual I like to keep up with, it's getting my nails done. I can skip a blowout or a facial if need be, but I really love having my nails done. I just feel like myself with a fresh coat of polish. However, I haven't set foot in a nail salon in two months, and while I appreciated the time for my nails to take a polish break, I wanted a little creature comfort. I ordered the Olive & June Studio Kit ($50), and it's a game changer.

I am not a natural artist; the worst grade I ever got in high school was in drawing and painting. I don't even own nail polish; I always use the salon's. So I was super excited to try the Poppy ($16), the Olive & June universal nail polish tool. The idea is that you put the poppy over your nail polish bottle, and it keeps your hand steady so you can paint easily. Reader, it works. It works astonishingly well. I used their brand of polish (which by the way might be the best polish ever), and the above picture is my nails after seven days, no touch ups or anything. Not bad for my very first at-home manicure.

I was reluctant to dive into a manicure kit because I felt like I was washing my hands so often that polish felt futile. However, there is a unique joy I feel in looking down at my fingers and seeing my lavender polish. I'm not only proud that I was able to tackle something I had previously designated impossible, I'm also proud that I did something for myself, and I highly recommend finding something that brings you joy. I'm already thinking about my next manicure.

Dermatologists Make a Shocking Discovery: Skin Rashes Might Be a Symptom of the Coronavirus

Facebook groups often serve as a safe space for people with shared experiences - from new moms to book lovers to dermatologists - to swap stories, advice, and new discoveries among peers. For doctors across the country in particular, and as COVID-19 cases continue to rise in the US, many are putting their heads together in such groups to find ways to limit the spread of the coronavirus through photos and information they've gathered on the frontline.

One of the latest takeaways, dermatologist Sandra Lee, MD, (or widely known as Dr. Pimple Popper) told POPSUGAR, is the note of a common symptom people who have tested positive for the virus seem to share: skin rashes.

"Around 20 percent of people we've noticed are experiencing these skin rashes, these skin findings associated with COVID," she said "They are even finding that they're associated with people who are asymptomatic, meaning they don't have any other symptoms but they end up testing positive, and this was their presentation, or this was their initial presentation before they got really sick. That can mean that you're an asymptomatic carrier, and they're finding that in young people. It doesn't happen in everybody, but this is a sign, and it's useful for nurses and physicians."

To be clear, this finding has not been acknowledged by public health officials or the CDC, and if you notice any symptoms at all, your first course of action should be to call your doctor. Still, Dr. Lee says it could be especially helpful for anyone staying at home to know that a new skin eruption on you or someone you've been in contact with could be something to look out for - so that you can detect it early and limit the spread of the virus.

There are two rashes to look out for: chilbains and livedoid patterns. If you notice these for the first time and have never experienced them before, contact your doctor.

As for what to look for? "There are two rashes we've noticed," she said (and in this next part, you might want to Google). "A lot of people are getting what is called chilbains, which looks like little purple bumps or spots on your fingers or toes that hurt when you touch them. The other rash is a net-like colored pattern you can get on your body called livedoid pattern. It's the same signs as vasculitis, meaning inflammation in your blood vessels, but in these cases it's not vasculitis."

To help get the word out, Dr. Lee also created a video (above) to share the full details. "It's so wonderful to see how doctors are all coming together online to share [their findings], and it's working. This is how they're saving lives."

POPSUGAR aims to give you the most accurate and up-to-date information about the coronavirus, but details and recommendations about this pandemic may have changed since publication. For the latest information on COVID-19, please check out resources from the WHO, CDC, and local public health departments.

The 15 Greatest Supernatural Monster-of-the-Week Episodes

Despite the finale being delayed, Supernatural is likely still signing off in 2020. Before we say goodbye to Sam and Dean for good, it's time to look back on a few of the episodes that make the series endlessly rewatchable. As much as I enjoy the show's overarching mythology, Supernatural's monster of the week episodes are the ones that I revisit over and over again. The episodes that focus on the Winchester brothers hitting the road to solve a mystery tend to be the most comforting episodes - even when they make me sleep with the lights on. The inventiveness of season 11's "Baby," season three's surprisingly emotional "Mystery Spot," and the real scares in season one's "Bloody Mary" are just a few examples of just how much fun it is to leave the battles between Heaven and Hell behind and focus on what the Winchesters do best: save people and hunt things.

With 15 seasons worth of episodes to choose from, a list of the best Supernatural monster of the week episodes could be practically endless, so I've made some hard cuts (I still love you "Ghostfacers"). But at the end of the day these 15 Supernatural episodes showcase why this show has endured for 15 years and earned a legion of devoted fans in the process.

Dascha Polanco’s Parents Were Small Business Owners, Now She’s Helping Those Affected by Covid-19

Queen of keeping it real Dascha Polanco knows first-hand all the hard work and dedication small business owners put into their projects. Both her parents were immigrants who moved to New York for better opportunities, and started their own small businesses to get their family afloat and provide for their kids.

"My family came to New York and through generations have worked hard to earn a living," Dascha told POPSUGAR. "It was a dream that through hard work and small opportunities they too became small business owners."

The effort was not lost on Dascha, and now she's paying it back and teaming up with Lemonade Stand NY, a clothing brand based in NYC, to raise money for small businesses affected by Covid-19. As part of the "Closed for Good" campaign, Lemonade Stand NY designs a t-shirt for a small business they want to help, teams up with influencers to help promote them, and gives the proceeds from the t-shirts to the struggling businesses.

"It's important for me to have a call to action for small businesses that are closed for the good of our public safety and health," Dascha said. "These businesses are part of our communities, culture, and are hurting. I can't think of a better time for us to unite and help them along everything else."

Dascha kicked off the campaign with the first "Closed For Good" T-Shirt ($25) to help support Washington Heights-based eatery "Locksmith Bar." While Dascha is originally from Brooklyn, she became a Washington Heights resident when she was filming Orange is the New Black, and strengthened her connection to the neighborhood last summer as she was filming her leading role in In The Heights.

The organization will soon announce other businesses they'll be supporting in New York and elsewhere. "There's no community without unity, it should be reciprocal: you extend a hand, you embrace that hand. That is power. Circle of life. Humanity," Dascha said.

I'm a Physician's Wife, and This Is the Most Important Thing You Can Do to Support Doctors

My husband is an ob-gyn at one of the largest hospitals in Detroit, which has seen a surge in cases of COVID-19. For now, he continues to see patients on the ob-gyn floor, visiting the emergency room only for pregnancy- or gynecology-related consults, which occasionally involve patients who are infected with the novel coronavirus. But as the hospital becomes more overwhelmed with cases of COVID-19, strategic measures are being put in place that may eventually require him to assist his fellow doctors and nurses in treating those who are sick.

As the infection rate skyrockets and the death toll mounts, I keep reminding myself that my husband is healthy, and his body is capable of fighting off a virus, however novel it may be. Even if he were to transmit the virus to me or our young daughter, we would likely recover without experiencing any complications, as most people do. It has taken some time, but today I'm not nearly as worried about us as I am about other healthcare workers and the patients who truly need care.

Because I'm married to a doctor, I know more about hospital policies and what's happening on the front lines than most. I know that healthcare professionals are even more exhausted than usual from treating an inordinate number of patients. I know that at times doctors and nurses haven't been able to access the personal protective equipment they need. And I also know that many patients - and those who aren't sick, for that matter - ignore the recommendations of doctors. In this case, those recommendations could help treat and prevent the spread of a deadly virus.

Together we can ease the burden on healthcare workers and overcome COVID-19, but it will take all of us.

Every medical doctor has taken an oath to care for patients to the best of their abilities. The doctors I know would never break that oath. When my husband graduated from medical school, I watched as seasoned physicians and anxious interns alike recited the oath with their whole heart, with tears in their eyes, and with every intention of living up to it. Now, as doctors turn that promise into action, they'll push through the exhaustion in order to help the growing number of patients who fill their ERs. They'll work without a mask if needed, and in turn, sacrifice holding their babies at night. And they'll continue to care for those patients who come back worse than when they left, no matter the circumstances that led them there.

The Hippocratic Oath says, "I will respect the hard-won scientific gains of those physicians in whose steps I walk, and gladly share such knowledge as is mine with those who are to follow." I see this pledge in the eyes of masked physicians across the world, as they study what others have learned about this virus and then treat patients without hesitation, no matter how mentally or physically draining it may be.

Out of respect for the healthcare professionals who are working tirelessly to protect us, let's make the same promise to them. Let's vow to respect the hard-won scientific gains they've made in understanding COVID-19 and put those recommendations into practice in our own lives - and let's make sure our friends, family, and neighbors do the same. Together we can ease the burden on healthcare workers and overcome COVID-19, but it will take all of us.
